George W. Bush, President of the United States, Decider in Chief and undisputed head of the Republican party says Dennis Hastert is his man, a good "family values" guy and a great leader:
"I know Denny Hastert," Bush said. "I meet with him a lot. He is a father, a teacher, a coach. He cares about the children of this country."
He said he supported Hastert's call for an investigation by law enforcement into the Foley case.
"I'm confident he will provide whatever leadership he can to law enforcement in this investigation," Bush said.
That's a pretty powerful endorsement of Hastert's handling of the situation, wouldn't you say?
Let's see what Time Magazine's Blog of the Year has to say about his culpability in the Foley matter. Take it away, John Hinderaker:
[T]he idea of pursuing the House leadership on a "when did they find out that Foley sent a creepy email" basis seems ludicrous, and is understandable only in the context of two facts: Foley is a Republican, and there is an election in five weeks.
[]
[T]he point I was making was not to defend Foley, who, as I said, should have resigned, and did. My point was that according to published news accounts, they were described to Hastert as "over-friendly." If Hastert had seen the actual emails and not done anything, I think he could be subject to legitimate criticism. But if, as has been reported, he was merely told that a gay member of his caucus had sent "over-friendly" messages to a former page, but that the page's family didn't want to pursue it, and further that Hastert's office "referred the matter to the authorities last fall," I don't see any particular basis to criticize Hastert or anyone else, other than Foley. (my emphasis)
I'd like to ask the Christians out there who may be reading this -- do you think this is attitude toward Hastert's actions closely approximates your own? I mean, if you were told about emails between a 52 year-old man and a 16 year-old boy that someone had enough concern about to bring to your attention, would you bother to ask the simple question as to what was in the emails? And would you be satisfied when the sole inquiry into the matter was to ask the 52 year-old man for his version of the story, and when he said there was nothing to worry about, leave it at that? As GOP Speaker of the House, having passed the problem off to others, would you feel that you had fulfilled all of the obligations incumbent upon you in the situation?
I think we may be witnessing a breakdown between the "family values" set, the authoritarian cultists who depend on lucrative think-tank fellowships and other forms of wingnut welfare for their daily bread, and the kleptocrats who profit therein.
Next up: Hinderaker explains how this is "all good for the Republicans." Glenn Reynolds concurs with a hat tip and a link.

They told Foley to STOP ALL COMMUNICATION with the boy.
Seems kinda harsh punishment for an innocent set of emails.
I guess they are going with it is worse to cut Denny loose, but wow, does that say something about their calculus.
Maybe they are still banking on BushCo’s October surprise and think they can save Denny with it too?
Hastert is a giant, talking intestinal polyp.
I say again..
The fact that Denny Hastert evidently knew about Foley’s fun-and-games for at least a year and did nothing — raises curiosity about what might be found in Hastert’s own dirt pile.
Any man (or woman) who can purposefully and repeatedly turn a blind eye to the predatory sexual abuse of children under his care has obviously made some psychological accommodations that also demand our further attention.
Intestinal polyp…

EPU’d, re-posting here because it fits like a glove with the post:
10-JUN-04 — Asked at a June 10, 2004 news conference if he stood by his pledge to fire anyone found to have leaked Plame’s name, Bush answered, “Yes. And that’s up to the U.S. attorney to find the facts.”
19-JUL-05: President Bush states, “It’s best people wait until the investigation is complete before you jump to conclusions. I don’t know all the facts. I want to know all the facts,” Bush said. “I would like this to end as quickly as possible. If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration,” in reference to senior officials leaking information about CIA identities.
=====
03-OCT-05 — “This investigation should be thorough and any violation of the law should be prosecuted,” Bush said while campaigning for Republican lawmakers in California…as he stepped toward his motorcade, the president ignored a shouted question directly asking whether Hastert should resign…”I know that he wants all the facts to come out and he wants to ensure that these children up there on Capitol Hill are protected,” the president said. “I’m confident he will provide whatever leadership he can to law enforcement in this investigation.”
Uh-huh. Yah. Sure.
By the way, has anyone really considered why the FBI would stand down on an investigation of the emails submitted to them by CREW? I’m sure that Christy’s radar went off when she read them, based on her experience in prosecution; mine went off as a parent. They surely must have set off the radar of any FBI reading them as well.
And another question: does anybody know whether pages are ever asked to run errands to the White House for members of the House?
I’m sure Hastert assumed it was all just innocent email fun-and-games. After all he “referred the matter to the authorities.”
Hastert has been said to be a pedophile in his teacher days, too.
Foley’s lawyer holding news conference in just minutes. ABC News says it will reveal a bombshell.
The bombshell is probably that Foley happpens to know of a Democrat who is a pedophile, and he will reveal that identity today…
Just heard from my wife that the Ed Schultz show is reporting that Foley’s about to give a “bombshell” presser right now — I know it’s on MSNBC, don’t know about other channels. More as it comes…
I have but ONE QUESTION to ask Dennis hastert….
for ME this sums up the entire corrupt situation plagueing the gop leadership in the house…they can deny deny deny all they want BUT the fact remains that they knew about Mark FOley and they still backed his bid to get re-elected, because they obviously cared more about protecting that seat then protecting gongressional pages.
I know that if someone in the congregation came to me with this kind of information I would certainly ask what was in the e-mails and I would feel compelled to find out everything possible. If they said what they are reported to have said, I could not sit on it or cover it up. It’s kind of a no brainer.

She also made a point of saying that he was not “pro-lfe” and didn’t share her values. I think the rabid right is deep down inside happy that this is happening—at least to Foley, probably not to the rest of them.
The video of the news conference is also here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/
Someone keep me posted. I’m at work! No time to watch the presser.
“I’m confident he will provide whatever leadership he can…”
ummm, isn’t he problem that he DIDN’T provide any “leadership” in the matter in the first place? (unless we are talking about the sweep-it-under-the-rug kind).
Operation Enduring Pedophile has really served to separate out the real scum from those who still have some conscience in the GOP. What’s also interesting is how ABC News has really bounced back from the “Path to 9/11″ crap.
Oh yeah I have a diary up ok Kos with a couple of my thoughts on this…
A few thoughts about “Operation Enduring Pedophile”
It’s a work environment situation. As any middle manager in America knows, you’d investigate the shit out of it.
Foley’s bombshell is that he was molested as a youth by a clergyman. Is not releasing details yet.
Attorney speaking on MSNBC and you can watch it live at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/
Attorney for Foley: taking questions now.
Well, the good news is that this will heap some more shit on the perverts in the clergy.
Foley’s bombshell is a pathetic attempt to turn the sex offender into a victim.
As the mother of a sexual abuse victim, let me just say BULLSHIT!
Can you effing believe this? Foley’s lawyer first used the “he’s an alcoholic” but that didn’t work because no one ever saw him drink. So, NOW it’s all because he was sexually abused by a clergy member as a child. Next, I bet he’ll be on Oprah.
What a crock of shit. Not that he was abused. I don’t doubt that he was. But that does not automatically cause one to ask a 16 year-old boy how he “spanks it.” And he’s not an alcoholic. He’s using the 30 days to get his excuses lined up.
I think ABC was a bit overboard in calling this a “bombshell.” I was hoping for some dirt on Hastert and his cronies….
I will say this lawyer is being as straightforward and un-slimy as any I’ve seen in action in a case like this.
Attorney giving first presser in 15 years (last one familiar to locals); handling this announcement in this fashion to be fairest to all media outlets.
Foley iterates sole responsibility for behavior.
Did not have sexual contact with minors.
Did not resign due to pressure or instructions from others.
Entering rehab for 30 days.
Between ages 13-15 was molested by church clergy; details of church and molestation will be released at end of treatment.
Asked attorney to thank thousands who have conveyed love and best wishes.
Wants public to know he is a gay man.
Now taking questions.
“I know Denny Hastert,” Bush said. “I meet with him a lot. He is a father, a teacher, a coach. He cares about the children of this country.”
“Heckuva Job, Denny!”
Details will be dealt with only 30 days or more from Sunday (in other, after the election), after Mark completes his treatment.
Mark has sought treatment in the past.
(No children surrounding Foley’s lawyer; that’s good.)
Also, have to wait until he has consulted with civil counsel.
Still going on at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/
Atty is trying to rehabilitate “Mark” in the media. Calling him Mark instead of Mr Foley, this was all staged very carefully.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/
Larry Gelbart says it all:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....30876.html
Foley is a distraction. Investigate this sicko and take down everyone with him but let’s keep focused. As the Foley event unraveled, everyone forgets that we just lost Habeas Corpus a mere 3 days ago. Anyone, I repeat ANYONE can be an ‘unlawful enemy combatant’, no right to attorney, judges or even a hearing. Add it to the list of curbed rights like caging protestors, conducting warrantless wire-taps, banning books like “America Deceived” from Amazon, stealing private lands and starting 2 illegal wars based on lies. Get the scumbags involved in this Foley mess (bet they ALL voted for Iraq war and Patriot Act), and let’s get back to focusing on losing our Constitution.
Final link (before Google Books caves and drops the title):
America Deceived (book)
Yawn.
That’s no bombshell, nor does it absolve him of blame. I was molested as a teen and I’m not soliciting minors on line or otherwise.
Cowardly fucker.
Not had any contact with any law enforcement officials, local, state, federal.
Not asked for access to computers or files.
Only preserving evidence.
Cannot comment on clergy.
Attorney not involved in politics, not discussing with Foley except for apologies to people that Foley believes he let down.
The only bombshell in this presser is the atty’s closing line in his prepared statement: Mark is a gay man.
Remember when folks wondered about his banshee wail over the Feds’ ‘SatNiteMassacree’ into the good Rep. Jefferson, (D-LA)?
Could be another motivation for objection.
Uh…I think this lawyer hasn’t read all of the IM’s. Foley most certainly attempted to gain sexual access to these boys.
Is that it? Yawn…
TRex #42 — thank you for sharing that, although I’m sure the episode isn’t a pleasant memory. It helps us keep this in perspective.
What bugs me is that it takes this all blowing up like this before Foley gets “treatment”, if indeed he has issues. As if nothing else in his life didn’t tell him to take a long sabbatical and get help…just sounds fishier than hell.
These sick bastards have gone on MSNBC to talk about how Foley was molested as a kid - gee that may explain some things but doesn’t excuse him from preying on kids and they are trying to blame everything on alcohol. Jerks! How stupid do they think we are?
Yep…just said it…haven’t seen the messages released today.
Well my friend…lets pull up a chair and talk about it shall we…
Christian??????
You mean you believe these bloodsuckers when they call themselves Christans?
You watch them scurry around trying to minimize pedophilia after they’ve been playing the Family Values card up one side and down the other for the past ten years. Then they’re trying to figure out how they can blame itall on Bill and Monica . . . .
Next they’re trying to figure out which of their own they have to throw to the sharks to save the rest.

And it doesn’t begin to excuse the cover-up.
here’s a question. if you were at work and someone came to you and said, “hey, johnny x seems a little ‘overly friendly’ with some of the office boys” wouldn’t that tend to stick in your mind? and then any time you were walking down the hall if you saw johnny x chatting up some young guy that little bell in your head would go off and you’d think, “jeeze, that johnny does seem to have a thing for the office boys”. in fact, once a certain behavior (or perceived behavior) is pointed out to you it’s like you can’t help but see it everywhere, even in innocent situations. yet somehow all the guys that knew that foley might be a johnny x never seemed to make those observations. which leaves them with only two explanations for their inability to spot this problem, either they are oblivious or stupid, take your pick. neither are qualities i look for in my elected representatives.
Well, if there is anyone out there who had sex with Foley while under age, they’ve got one hell of an opening now. Foley had damn well be certain that no one is going to contradict him or he’s gonna have one PISSED off lawyer on his hands.
Poor Foley was traumatized and therefore damaged as a child by some adult, who himself was damaged as a child by some adult who…
The party of personal responsibility are showing they are irresponsible, once again. Also, all queers are obviously “damaged, poor unfortunate degenerates.”
Are we all not God’s creatures? Is it possible for God to err?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/
A reporter is pointing out that an IM says that Foley had to go to a vote on the House floor.
In other words, the attorney is trapped: he says that Mark Foley never drank on the job, and that he sent IMs only when drunk. But of course he sent IMs when he had to go vote — which means he was in his Congressional office while sending the IMs, and {drinking} {not drinking} (take your choice).

Good.
“Despite the trauma he’s been through…he is not in danger of hurting himself.”
Last of my worries, dude. Very f*cking last.
Foley will eventually do jail time. Now the $64,000 question is who will join him? Denny and Mark, could be match made in heaven.
Questions have been asked in prior threads and will be asked here why the White House (read Karl Rove) has let this fiasco continue unchecked. One posted comment was: “What am I missing?” Watertiger or Sharkbabe (can’t remember which) promised that there are other Congressmen about to be served up du jour as putative child molesters. I think the real bombshell that is waiting to explode (& that the White House is terrified will now come out into the mainstream media) is that already reported upon by Seymour Hersh last year in the New Yorker and in many interviews since: one of the Pentagon-held pics from the torture at that Abu prison place in Baghdad run by our military and military contractors (read: CIA interrogators) was, according to Hersh, a video of a little boy being raped by either a U.S. soldier or U.S. contractor or U.S. client Iraqi guard. Mr. Hersh has said in radio interviews that he had seen the video and that the sound of the little boy screaming as he was anally penetrated was especially harrowing… That means that video is out in the public and not just on endless loop in some projector in the White House lounge or Congressional Offices of the likes of Foley. Obviously, Karl Rove and his henchmen are scared (& should be) that it will now be making the news rounds… I think it might have particular relevance, don’t you? Not just the sad and unlawful torture of grown men and women, but the raping of children and it being videotaped not just Instant Messaged…
yeah, the point of the perv being “in treatment” for 30 days is to get him off stage, on ice, where the press can’t get to him and he can’t make any headlines opening up his yap until after the election. It had to be Karl’s doing to put him away and tell him to claim victimhood — Denny’s not smart enough to come up with that.

Bush almost makes it sound like it was Hastert who was stalking those youngters online. Why did he feel it was necessary to defend Hastert’s “family values”? The question is whether Hastert ignored his responsibilites as Speaker of the House.
I don’t think that helped Hastert that much, might have even hurt. Bush protesteth too much.

The pages aren’t like the new hire in our offices who’s just out of college and still wet behind the ears — they’re HIGH SCHOOL KIDS. No, what we are seeing here is internal warfare as much as anything. “The Path to 9/11″ was produced by the Entertainment part of ABC, against the objections of the News people (if you recall, some of the ABC News folks were among the first to come out against it).
So now the News side strikes back.
“Cross into our turf, will ya? Your lame borumentary tried to bridge the gap between News and Entertainment and wound up being neither. Now sit back and let a pro show you how it’s done. First off, you start with facts…”
I can imagine that when the numbers are run on all this (legitimate news that rivets the nation, at the cost of a few reporter’s salaries, vs. $40,000,000.00 for a political hatchet job they couldn’t find sponsors for) there will be a bit of “reevaluation of priorities” at ABC.

Bush is just a good a representative of the Christian faith when he talks about Hastert as he is when he crusades against Islamofascists. Grrrrrr . . .
It makes my skin crawl to have the “family values” folks the “go to” people for the media when they want the “Christian” view of things. Their silence on this whole mess is appalling.
When - not if, but when - I’ve been handed information similar to what Hastert received, I have done a basic gut check: is this even remotely credible? When the answer has come back “yes” (and it always has, to date, for me), a report is made to the state Children and Family Services agency (by whatever name it may go by in that state).
In general, I try to get the person who brought the information to me to file the report, as that makes it at least one layer closer to being first hand. If they are unwilling, then I’ll make the report myself.
I don’t know if Hastert keeps an Illinois teaching credential current, but if so it ought to be yanked. Any IL teachers (or reporters) may wish to inquire . . .

Thank you, Bob Schrum, for once actually saying something I can get behind; Shrum is taking apart the “gay-as-mitigating-circumstance” position by saying being gay has nothing to do with inappropriate behavior with minors.
Damn straight. It is creepy sh*t when a 52-year old man harasses a 16-year old girl. (Been there, done that, it’s gross and no excuses for it. Grandfathers should know better.)

Had ongoing colloquy re: Manchuria and Candidates.
Check. (Typos fxd.) The wonders of ‘Edit’.
This whole press conference is a diversion. Like Watergate, the key is not just the original crime; it’s the cover-up. If these clowns had responded in 2001 when they first became aware of Foley’s little “problem,” they could have quietly pressured him to retire for “family reasons” or the usual sort of bilge, sent him back to Florida and let Jebby find him a cushy job where he’d be out of the spotlight.
But noooooo…… Hastert and the gang in their hubris just ignored the red flags and their own Family Values claptrap (because we now know that’s all it is for them — claptrap to impress the impressionable) and keep him on because he raises a lot of money and they do like all that nice money, don’t they. So things go coasting along nicely until they get a nasty October surprise exploding all over their fannies, and now all they can do is try to figure out a way to blame Bill Clinton for the whole mess.
Keep your eyes on the cover-up. Foley is almost a distraction at this point.
