The parents have had a horrible week. The young man is beginning to get some threats. The media has been aggressively seeking his conversations at school, his home, and that’s the most disturbing thing.

CALLEBS: Alexander calls this a sad situation. And he goes on to say he has talked with the family on a number of occasions as late as last night. And Alexander says the family has made it clear they don’t want to pursue charges, Soledad. They simply want this controversy to go away.

S. O’BRIEN: So explain to me exactly how long Congressman Alexander knew about this e-mail exchange. And, did he know about the content of the e-mails?

CALLEBS: Yes. More on this timeline. And he did know the content once the e-mails were played out for him.

He actually found out about this 11 months ago, back in mid- November when a reporter came to him and asked him about e-mails from Foley to the page from this area. He says he first went to the speaker’s office, then two months later — two months later he got another journalist’s request about information. Then he went to Tom Reynolds’ office. And Andrea explained his connection with this.

Alexander went on to say that he believes the GOP leadership has handled this controversy well.

The way the Repugs are self immolating, there may not be enough electronic voting machines to save/count the nonexistent votes to save them.

Congressman Alexander just told CNN that the boy is getting “threats”. Must be because our family values Christian ethics Republican fan base do not cotton to “truthiness” or tattlin’ on their party members.

His proclivity to use the Page Pool as his personal chickenhawk hunting grounds … a whole ‘nother story, and one that’s finally gotten some attention. Why in the world the republicans let him do that is beyond me. But they did, and now they’re paying the price. Awwwww…. my heart bleeds for them. Not!

If this is what it takes to wake up the average sheeple to the blatant criminality of the republicans, and their quest for power unending, then let there be more. Right up until the 8th of November. Then let the games begin!

These ARE scary times. I don’t want accountability from Republicans. I demand it! This fall the accounts come due. It’s just a rotten shame it has come to the fact that child battering, as many media reports are posting, may well be the tipping point to the Democrats taking control of the Senate.

Woodward’s book, the July 10 meeting and the 9/11 commission coverups, Rice getting caught lying (again), the NIE that Iraq is FUBAR, Generals calling for Rummy to resign, Kissinger behind it all, polls now showing that in the eight contested Senate races Rethugs are ahead in none, including Missouri, NJ, Virginia and Tennessee, the whole Foley mess which will cost R’s at least two, maybe three seats considered “safe” last week, Hastert probably gone … My my, a meltdown is a lovely thing to see.

At this point, I’m not sure it matters who in the GOP “leadership” knew what or when. The disgust level for this story just crossed a critical threshold, and that will cost the Repugs at the polls. It doesn’t take more than a one or two pct. swing to move even more races into new categories: from Lean Blue to Solid Blue, from Toss Up to Lean Blue, from Lean Red to Toss Up, etc.

CNN seems to have the story in frequent rotation, and they have been featuring it in a promotion of Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room. Sounds like the Wolfman is going to hit it hard.

This whole Foley mess travels by Republican osmosis and capillary up the indelicate political rope from Hastert to Boehner, (Hastert’s hurdy-gurdy man) to Rove, to Cheney and ultimately to Bush. What did they know? And when did they start covering up?

I remember reading of a southern politician who accused his opponent’s sister of being a thespian. Don’t know if he won with it.

I’m wondering why Foley wasn’t asked to resign earlier, too. The republicans would’ve had plenty of time to recover if this was addressed last year.
So far, this explanation looks interesting to me - from “Connecting the I.M.s - Foleygate from inside Gay underworld”, Wertz’s DKos Diary

Indeed, given the breadth of the cover-up, the fact that the House has never treated this as anything but something to be covered up tells me that they knew this was (and remains) about something bigger.

If the issue had been simply to throw Foley under the bus a few months ago, why wouldn’t Hastart and co have done it?

There’s only one reason and it’s a tacit admission that the problem wasn’t Foley or Foley alone. That to toss Foley would only stir a hornet’s nest leaving it best to just stonewall those overly friendly e-mails.

For the young man comfortable enough to afford Foley and company more than IM access, there would be rewards. Indeed, provided one could keep it secret enough, it could be very profitable. (Hence you take the boy least likely to “snitch” - a gay one - pressure him into inappropriate situations and then reward him, turning him into a prostitute, a willing accomplice, overnight.)

When we look closer, we do begin to wonder if Foley shared his conquests, if willing enablers up and down the chain, also received access and dispensed largess. If the trade in “willing” young teens is just another side dish on the corruption buffet that is the modern Republican party.

At any rate, the question remains why wasn’t Foley just slapped into line at the outset? As I’ve said the first thought is that the pattern and network was broad enough that any attempt to discipline Foley might open a bigger can of worms. The Foley matter was hushed up, therefore, not only to protect Foley, but, more importantly, to protect other, even more prominet members of the party. Of the many reasons why they covered up, that’s the only one that makes real sense in damage limitation terms.

What are some thoughts on this?

My, how this scandal has intensified. It’s a long way from “overly friendly e-mails” to “cyber sex,” when talking about a Congressman and an underage page.

Foley has said he is entering a treatment program to deal with alcoholism and emotional problems, blaming his ill-conceived exchanges with the teenager on his drinking. But The New York Times reported Tuesday that “a former aide and other associates” told the newspaper “that they did not believe Mr. Foley had a drinking problem.”

He will after this week, that’s for sure.

I can’t find the complete statement that Bush read. But I don’t see it as a ringing endorsement of Hastert one bit as is being reported. Also, Bush used the word responsibly twice regarding the House leadership.

That’s kind of what I’m hoping for. Diebold-hacking may be good enough to tip a close race, but too much swing in an election that’s obviously heading toward a landslide is going to look just a little obvious.

They’ve been making the rounds with that one since yesterday. One of them apparently showed up at Taylor Marsh’s yesterday. It’s “jeff”, who apparently was a busy little boy yesterday and hasn’t been back since.

I noticed his name in several comment threads, and so did a little assay:

What’s interesting about jeff, besides his penchant for absurd rhetoric, is that he dropped by and left RNC talking points in ten different comment threads in the space of two and a half hours. He hasn’t been back since to see what folks thought of what he wrote.

Does that sound like someone who’s interested in discussing issues to anyone? Wanna take any bets that if Taylor checked out this guy’s IP that it would be part of some astroturfing organization’s address space?

I don’t appreciate the implicit homophobia in this statement. Is it that you see any act of male on male sex (as you reference in the deliverance quote) as such a traumatic act it comes to your mind as a way of torture?

There’s always been a the stereotypical link between pedophelia (which susie bright posted on huffpost today questioning whether this is really at play or whether the left is engaging in salacious tactics themselves to win points) and homosexuality (in particular male). while i am glad to see foley taken down for illegal actions and the GOP been spotlit for its false heirs of morality, as a gay man i am very concerned about how the left will employ tired and hackneyed gay stereotypes (i.e. squeal like a pig) to get as much mileage out of this as possible.

i’m all for a good laugh and loved Jane’s cage aux foleys quip. but this post leaves me ill at ease. and not laughing

I’ve wondered that myself. One way to explain the sheer blockheaded refusal to face the facts about Iraq, the war profiteering, etc., and on both sides of the aisle and the docile willingness to go along with gutting the constitution, separation of powers, etc. would be if there had been a preemptive strike on the legislative branch’s collective spine–secret wiretaps being used a’la Hoover to amass a set of “persuasion files” on all (or most) of congress.

It sure would explain a lot.

OT but just read the earlier comment about Frist. His remark was realism. Afghanistan is a lost cause, so talk to the Taliban or go home. The Taliban is a Pashtun peoples movement. They have to be dealt with. Period.

How much of a people's movement? As in an Islamic Red Guard type of people's movement–one that excludes many Pashtuns as well as other ethnicities? One that almost caused war with Iran? Juan Cole, April 17, 2006:

A US base near Khost gets so much enemy fire that it is called Rocket City

Interestingly, they are ignoring this overseas. I have not seen a trace of any of this on the BBC or in any media in Europe … yet.

Foley’s sexual orientation was, as I remember, hardly a secret. I seem to remember reading about it back in 2004 or before. His proclivity to use the Page Pool as his personal chickenhawk hunting grounds … a whole ‘nother story, and one that’s finally gotten some attention. Why in the world the republicans let him do that is beyond me. But they did, and now they’re paying the price. Awwwww…. my heart bleeds for them. Not!

If this is what it takes to wake up the average sheeple to the blatant criminality of the republicans, and their quest for power unending, then let there be more. Right up until the 8th of November. Then let the games begin!

The BBC news on my local PBS channel did cover the story last night. It was clearly presented but without comment.

I don`t think it is JUST Repedophilicans that do this but is probably MOSTLY Repedophilicans that are engaged in all this & they probably learn this methodology long before they move into the Potomac neighborhood (College Repedophilians anyone; how about exclusive boy`s schools etc ?)

I’ve never seen the movie “Deliverence”, so it’s possible that I missed a subtext there — frankly, I didn’t even realize I was quoting it. That said, the joke I was intending had to do with “squeal” being both a word for “tell us what you know” and associating the sound a pig makes with Hastert, a pig in too many ways to list. As usual, explaining the joke kinda ruins it.

Anyway, I not only have friends who are gay, but relatives also, including one who died of AIDS several years ago, and while not myself gay, I’ve certainly been called ‘fag’ (for being the the small bookish type in high school) often enough to know that homophobia hurts.

So, I’m hesitant to apologize for the remark Pooch, because I both never intended the reading you suggest, and also because I think that reading is kind of out of left field.

That said, I will be more sensitive to the origin of that quote in the future and refrain from using it. And for that ignorance/insensitivity, Pooch, I do extend my apologies and empathy.

Why? The scenario in the movie is of a violent rape. Surely Pooch’s ConcernTroll wasn’t meaning to suggest that violent rape is synonymous with gay sex, was it?

The way the Repugs are self immolating, there may not be enough electronic voting machines to save/count the nonexistent votes to save them.

the deliverance quote is pretty well known in american culture although i can’t dispute whether you honestly did this context carried no associations.

i don’t think that my reaction is out of left field at all. all i can say is that i am a gay man, and was out with some other buddies last night for dinner (down to earth folks with day jobs) and we all had the same reaction when the topic turned to his conversation, namely that schandenfreud will give way to ugly associations. there’s a destructive, inimical association between (male) homosexuality and child molesters and while it may not be the various commentators’ intent to perpetuate this i can’t help but be perturbed by the casual usage of the terms of pedophilia and molestation in this context (again, see susie bright’s post on this issue as well).

Yeah, well, I didn’t intend to suggest that Denny should be violently raped or for that to be a subtext of the joke — because, violent rape? Not funny.

Although, now that I think about it, there really is every reason to suspect that shoving things up peoples’ asses is one of the coercive interrogation techniques approved by the Bush administration. It seems like just the kind of thing they’d think of, and want to keep covered up.
