When asked today where the stunt kids in the background for his press conference came from (you know, the one where he discusses his role in the online sex solicitation of a minor scandal), NRCC head Tom Reynolds said :
Reporter: Who are the children, Congressman? Who are these children?
Reynolds: Pardon me?
Reporter: Who are these children?
Reynolds: Well, a number of them are from the community. There are several of the "thirtysomething" set that are here and uh I've known them and I've known their children as they were born.
Don't recall any mention of the word "props" :
Republican Tom Reynolds rented out a daycare facility today as he surrounded himself with kids and families, using them as protection from tough questions about specifics into the Foley messages.
Tom may have just won the highly coveted GOP "how low can they go" gold medal of the day, but I hate to award it so soon because the day is still young and there are so many vying for it.
Update: BuffaloBlogger now says "It was a turn of phrase. The press conference was held in the student center of Daemen College in Amherst, NY." We apologize for any confusion.

FITZ! KIDZ!
Just when you think these schmucks can sink no lower, they prove you wrong, again and again.
Reynolds will be a contender, though.

Um, Boner-baby, can you say Fox??????
I guess you could call them a “Reynold’s Wrap”…
why does Reynolds Wrap himself in a kiddie-fest… trying to foil the media?
Well, he’s certainly a contender for today’s gold medal. What kind of parents let their kids be used like that? They weren’t all babies or infants.
Has anyone found out if Pickles attended the Reynolds fundraiser as scheduled? If so, she needs to be asked whether she raised the issue with him. No more free passes for the First Lady — if she’s campaigning, she has to answer real questions, not just about her drapes-into-dress moments (see watertiger).
Is the Bearded Lady still doing her fundraiser for Reynolds?
Kick the bums out: Alexander, Boehner, Shimkus, Reynolds, Hastert.

impeccable timing!
He actually rented out a day care facility? Truly?
I am speechless.

Just asking, sir.
But I just read And the Hits Just Keep On Coming .
I’d like a ruling on Foley’s status.

Ain’t no regular sex scandal acc to Jack.
This Republican Congress is now like a filthy kitchen that when you walk in late at night and turn on the lights all the cockroaches scatter, running for cover.
Except, of course, this time there’s no place to hide.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG! This wins for the most pathetic thing I have ever heard of someone doing to save their own ass. Renting out other people’s children to use them as human shields against the media asking the questions you should have been asking for yourself all along… Pa.the.tic.
I mean, honestly, there isn’t much lower to go than this, is there?
What are those parents thinking?

Now our Congressional D teamers need to shout this from the rafters! Take the floor of the House and Senate, give interviews on the Capitol steps….and shout long and loud about how the R team covered up child molestation for political gain. D teamers, we need to “Murtha-ize” this!

“Rented out a daycare facility…”
You can do that? I mean, you can call them up and they rent the kids out for a price?

Just thinking out loud here…Nobody in the Republican party makes a move without Karl Rove’s blessing (or, at the very least, knowledge). That would include covering up over-friendly emails if it put an incumbent’s seat in danger.
So, are there any enterprising journalists out there asking “What did Karl know, and when did he know it?”
So, will Denny throw Karl under the bus?
Jes’ thinkin’ out loud.
Pumping the brakes here…
The “rented out a daycare” line came from a blog post providing no corroboration. It’s sick enough Reynolds used kids as props, but unless we’ve got supporting evidence for renting out a daycare, I wouldn’t trust the line.
Fordham unavailable for comment acc to Mary Snow…
What a coward. Hiding behind women and children.
as Shooter would say,
The Republicans are, if you will, in the last days of their insurgency.
Almost as appalling as Top Republicans protecting a pedophile in their midst is the Mainstream Media, shamelessly and determinedly trying to minimize, dismiss, misdirect and gloss over this crime. The MSM has a role as a check and an illuminator of government corruption, but it has been so thoroughly taken over by corporate interests that it is actually possible for Mark Foley to do what he has apparently done, and for the MSM to be cowed into submission by its corporate owners.
Are the MSM covering the issue? Of course. But are they covering it accurately, cleanly explaining the crimes of the RNC, and casting issues into clear relief? No. They are deliberately drawing false comparisons, minimizing the crimes, and positioning this story as one of alcoholism and sex, rather than one of politics and criminal coverup.
Disgusting. There are about three decent reporters left in the country, and the rest of them are nothing but hacks.
I think the “rented out a day-care” line is sarcasm, not a statement of fact … In fact, I’m sure it is.

I’ve been thinking since yesterday about Tony Snow’s feebly attempted walk-back from his “naughty emails” comment.
I keep asking myself, ‘Did he really say “fill in the blank”?’ even though I’ve listened to it and I know he did.
To me, THAT stands as one of the most disgusting moments this week, that when the White House Press Secretary was given a mulligan, he basically, LITERALLY said “yeah yeah yeah, horrible yada yada.”
“Fill in the blank” ?!?!
What’s that I hear? Why I do believe it’s the sound of an entire FLEET of buses starting their engines.

I haven’t had a chance to read thru all of this thread’s comments, so forgive me if I am repeating here. In a daycare center, club, school, no one may photograph, record, or video children under the age of 18 without the written permission of that child’s parents.
Did Reynolds get the written permission of each and every parent of the children in that video? If he didn’t, he has broken the law!

We have to be ready for the inevitable news report that a Dem congressman did the same. (Note: I’m NOT even saying one actually did. I’m saying the report is inevitable regardless of its veracity.)
So a couple points are in order. First, ABC did not simply run the pages’ emails when they received them. Brian Ross actually confirmed with the congressman’s office that they were from Foley. I understand the same was done with the IM’s. The aol account was definitively confirmed as belonging to Foley by admission.
Second, when this report comes, we need to do everything we can to make sure the question moves quickly to: when did Nancy Pelosi know, and when did she know it? Because I am confident it will provide a contrast we’d like to dwell on.
(selise: I read the Iran deployment diary but not yet the comments. Until I get some time I’ll say no more than that Col. Sam Gardiner knows a lot more about this than I do.)
true, Professor Foland.

Prof Foland, re inevitable smearing of a Dem, I’ve been concerned about the same thing, and also concerned about how to avoid politicizing any response or strategy.
These people are masters at muddying the water and turning a political advantage into a political neutral. They’re already frantically trying. They just haven’t found any traction yet.
I’m just sick of them using their fuckups to smear the entire system, is all. I want the cancer contained and cut out.

The fact that Denny Hastert evidently knew about Foley’s fun-and-games for at least a year and did nothing — which I liken to the Catholic Church’s monstrous denial of sexual abuse — raises curiosity about what might be found in Hastert’s own dirt pile.
Any man (or woman) who can purposefully and repeatedly turn a blind eye to the sexual abuse of children under their care has obviously made some psychological accommodations that also demand our further attention.

Thanks Christy!
CNN: Seven republican candidates are returning their contributions from Foley
Next hour – Bill Frist – and the teaser question: “I’ll be asking him whether Speaker Hastert should resign.”
The answer should be quite illuminating. Under most circumstances, the leaders of one house never comment on the leaders of the other house. Of course, these aren’t most circumstances.
I’m guessing Frist will politely duck the first time the question is asked, but if they repeat the question and don’t let it go, he’ll give Denny a push toward the curb. The only thing up in the air, IMHO, is whether Frist will smile as he pushes . . .
Personally I’d really like a clarification on whether the “renting out a day care” is the literal truth.
At first I assumed it was a rhetorical flourish but now reading the link I am just not so sure.
Did I mention earlier that this is doing a lot for releasing our inner cynics?
GMan–selise asked me on an earlier thread what I thought about the Navy deployments to the Gulf. I’ve read the most recent story (there’s a dkos diary on it) that just came out, but haven’t had any time to digest. A couple of weeks ago Gardiner has already said he’s watching the date Oct. 21; the various known PTOD’s to CV battle groups, subs, and minesweepers puts them all in and around the Gulf on that date.
Gooooo Patty. I am in her district and she has been running slightly (sometimes more) behind the republican. Balrog said he has tried to get Patty on the candidate list highlighted here, but good for her on this ad. People are MAD here in Minnesota. Oh please, please let’s get rid of Pawlenty, Kennedy and their followers.
Larry! I HAVE had time for a few glasses in the evenings!
I think folks ought to read closely what Larry put in bold. On child sex matters, you do not EVER stand idly by. Not ever! What those R teamers did by turning away from this is sick. Pure sick. And cowardly as well. God are they sickos.

Hey Ghostman, good to see ya.
Even if it proves false that this idiot rented out a daycare center, Reynolds’ amateurish and desperate propaganda strategy of gathering supporters WITH their little children to protect him from any questions that would, appropriately, quote sexual language from Foley’s IM’s only serves to provide a clear visual tip off of Reynolds’ otherwise denied guilt in the Foley scandal.
Ghostman!
Punaise!
I had heard someplace on this toobz that an attack on Iran (or a blockade) is tentatively scheduled for right after the election.
If the dems take control of the House – what happens then? I suspect that the dems will go ahead with the blockade because Nancy can be a hawk and no one will want to be classified as weak. And they (the republicans) still have the media so they will be ready on the attack.
Jane, this “renting out a daycare” thing is spinning out of control. People are taking the line literally.
The blogger who wrote the line, “buffalowatchdog,” appears to have just been making a wry joke. Or do you have any corroboration that a daycare center was actually rented out? If not, your post needs an update and a walkback.

First ad on Foley scandal hits the airwaves
From CNN Ticker Producer Alex Mooney
WASHINGTON (CNN) — House Democratic candidate Patty Wetterling went on the air Tuesday with an ad accusing GOP leaders of “covering up” former Rep. Mark Foley’s Internet communication with underage House pages.
This is the first television campaign ad to cite the Foley scandal.
“Congressional leaders have admitted covering up the predatory behavior of a congressman who used the Internet to molest children,” an announcer says at the top of the 30-second ad. “For over a year they knowingly ignored the welfare of children to protect their own power.”

From what I’ve heard and read he can do it, but the govt. can’t pay him. Catch 22, he can’t work full time for the govt. without getting paid.
Someone suggested on the radio, I think, that he could get appointed to a lesser position and those above him could in essence “stand down.” Slimy ain’t it?

LL @ 126
I read somewhere, a week ago, that the plan was to give Bolton a recess appointment to the “deputy” position at UN, which is not what he has now. The story suggested this was “legal.” Bolton would continue doing what he does now, in the deputy position, and there would be no one at the senior position. The rules don’t mean what you think they mean with this crowd.

10-JUN-04 — Asked at a June 10, 2004 news conference if he stood by his pledge to fire anyone found to have leaked Plame’s name, Bush answered, “Yes. And that’s up to the U.S. attorney to find the facts.”
19-JUL-05: President Bush states, “It’s best people wait until the investigation is complete before you jump to conclusions. I don’t know all the facts. I want to know all the facts,” Bush said. “I would like this to end as quickly as possible. If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration,” in reference to senior officials leaking information about CIA identities.
=====
03-OCT-05 — “This investigation should be thorough and any violation of the law should be prosecuted,” Bush said while campaigning for Republican lawmakers in California…as he stepped toward his motorcade, the president ignored a shouted question directly asking whether Hastert should resign…”I know that he wants all the facts to come out and he wants to ensure that these children up there on Capitol Hill are protected,” the president said. “I’m confident he will provide whatever leadership he can to law enforcement in this investigation.”
Uh-huh. Yah. Sure.
By the way, has anyone really considered why the FBI would stand down on an investigation of the emails submitted to them by CREW? I’m sure that Christy’s radar went off when she read them, based on her experience in prosecution; mine went off as a parent. They surely must have set off the radar of any FBI reading them as well.

That would explain why he hasn’t done anything about this current scandal. He knows an attack on Iran will put everyone’s mind back on fear, fear, fear and should Iran retaliate will give Bush what he needs to impose Martial Law.
No elections to worry about and it’s King George forever.
Professor Foland @ 85
The 21st. Hmmm. That business with the puts that ET brought up. A friend says that puts expire on a 3 week schedule, and that this batch expires on Oct 6th. If I recall correctly. That means that fresh puts will go up on the 7th. That’s the place to watch.
What Eureka said @125.
Wrestling Reid the Remedy for Republimania – that boy hasn’t earned a buckle in a long long while.
I think someone needs to very seriously contact the CT for Leiberman party and ask which Democrat Leiberman blames for the Foley scandal.
And how he compares the Bush response time for Foleygate with the Bush response time to people dieing in sewage in Katrina.
Also if a solution might be to just declare some of the pages enemy combatants so there won’t have to be any investigtions? I mean, they have aided and abetted the enemy by being victimized.
I’m just sure Leiberman can also explain which Democrat made poor Dr. Rice lose her memory.
btw – Interesting article on lawyer who got the el-Masri case rolling
Once upon a time, you really would think someone showing up with that kind of story was nuts. Now the Fed Cts are getting ready to add a “Govt Criminal Cover Up – State Secrets” category to the filing cover sheets.
NormalLiberal @ 149
If Hastert goes down and the Dems take control of the House and Senate, having Durbin and Obama representing the state in the Sentate will help the people of Illinois (as opposed to their GOP ‘critters) get over Denny’s departure rather quickly.
joyessness – Billmon seemed to think that Iran was smart enough NOT to retaliate… if the big, bad U.S. bombs ‘em, it will go an awful long way towards gettin’ them what they want in terms of nuclear – ’specially if they do nothing in response to our attack…
I think Billmon may be right.

I checked with the source who sent it to me and was satisfied. If you have proof of anything else you are free to post it.
Prof Foland – my only hesitation about Gardiner was he was blowing this same horn last June… about deploying Navy ships (turned out they were regularly scheduled rotations)… I still think Bush is going to try to provoke Iran into sinking a US Navy ship so he can launch an attack.. If Iran’s smart (see above), they will make the U.S. carry the entire blame…

NOOOOOOOOooooooooo!
YAKIMA, Washington (AP) — Federal investigators were set Tuesday to begin an investigation into a fire that ruined about 4 percent of America’s yield of hops, used as flavoring in the brewing of beer and ale.
( SOB!!)
Frist is really losing track of the Afghanistan spin & screwing it up royally. And Frist, how about sending some of that support, cooperation & training to the US…
Peterr @ 153
Durbin (Obama not so much) is part of what helps me survive as a Democrat in the red part of Illinois…
And we can hope that Hastert collapsing could help take out one or two of his minions – I have a little list all prepared.

I can barley stand to think about it

Makes me hopping mad.
Whether money changed hands in using the daycare center is almost beside the point. Choosing to hold a presser at a daycare, in order to shut down “adult” questions from reporters is a low stunt, and is proof of the fear at work in the Reynolds campaign.
I must admit, though, a bit of disappointment in the media if they let this shut them down. Surely a good reporter could ask some powerful questions in a dignified manner despite the presence of children, and let the Distinguished Gentleman figure out how to answer it.
And the point above from karen allen @64 about getting written permission from children to be used in any kind of photographs is spot on. Someone really ought to check to local law, and if there’s a problem here, let the media know about it. They probably aren’t happy about getting shut down at the day care, and handing them a good way to hit back would probably be wholeheartedly embraced.
OldSchool @ 154
Yes, I think Iran’s president is much shrewder, if not smarter that Bush.
I think Billmon may be right too, but I think Bush just assumes that they will retaliate because that’s what he would do.
BobbyG @ 162
Just wait – there may be more to the story and we haven’t heard the yeast of it yet.
OldSchool @ 153
I hope he’s fey on that.
Bc I also see the option of Iran, which has had time to plan, taking some actions vis a vis our naval targets and forces in Iraq as targets that could be pretty damn devastating.
SO sorry. Must have had one too many. *g*.
Mary & Old School…all the supplies for our soldiers in Iraq has to travel overland.
somebody spilled beer everywhere….
I would be one pissed off mother if Hastert showed up at my day care center. I guess day care children are the new “troops”…you know…they ask no questions.

Foley attorney now speaking.

How about this boat, er buss?
RevDeb @ 131
All this to keep a guy there who’s about as qualified to be a diplomat as I am to be a ballet instructor. I realize that this analogy has little meaning to you folks, since you don’t know me, but imagining a rabid St. Bernard teaching ballet isn’t a whole lot sillier than imagining me doing it.
Awwww….Foley is a “victim.” He was diddled by a priest as a kid. Awww….
I was wondering whether Frist will be announcing that Saddam Hussein should be part of the government of Iraq?
ccmask @ 3:04 pm (#176)
Touche. Or should I say “Shhh. Don’t give him any ideas!”
“and finally, he wants you all to know he’s gay….”
thanks.

stupid question: what’s to keep them from passing the hat at the right wing foundations?
puh-leeze. the attorney is praying for Foley.
The question: Was Mark was under the influence of alcohol while on the house floor????????
PS I hate combovers, dude. Be bare and be proud.
Fear not, Reynolds has his standards. For example he won’t shirk his parental spanking duties when his son puts his finger up his daughter’s butt. I am not kidding.
punaise @ 180
I don’t think that fixes the problem. As RevDeb said, you can’t work full time for the government if you’re not being paid, and by “being paid” I’m pretty sure they mean that you’re on the government’s payroll (or a contractor’s).
NEED PROOF IT CAN BE ANYONE?
Just ask the people of Waterbury, Connecticut. In July of 2001, their mayor Philip Giordano, was arrested on two federal counts; The use of an interstate facility to entice a child under the age of 16 to engage in sexual activity, and conspiracy to carry out that offense. He is such a threat the judge denied bail. And to think this man ran against U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman for the U.S. Senate. He lost but look how close we were to having an accused child molester in the U.S. Senate. Do you think he would have worked to pass bills protecting our children???
UPDATE: On 3/25/03, A federal jury convicted Phillip Giordano of violating the civil rights of two young girls by sexually abusing them. He was also found guilty of conspiring with a prostitute who is the mother of one of the girls and an aunt of the other. In addition, jurors convicted him on 14 of 15 counts of using an interstate device — a cell phone — to arrange the meetings with the girls. Giordano, 40, faces up to life in prison.
All I can say is Thank God we got another child molester off the streets! And my heart goes out to the young girls.

New NBC/WSJ Poll
Bush JAR 39%
42% in the same poll one month ago
As far as the comics go, they are far, far outstripped by reality.
Just Outrageous. Reality Trumps Art, again and again

As I thought, it takes a sex (homo) scandal and
only a sex-scandal to enrage the US-dumbshit sheeple, if at all. As the prev. post shows,
the BushCo criminal still gets 39% support !
What a fukked up country that is today!
Tom Reynolds talkin’ ’bout kids, fingers, butts & spankings. I told you I wasn’t kidding. Must watch.

Around two minutes into that YouTube clip, did anyone notice that kid on the upper left corner? WTH is is going on there?!?
babzilla @ 190
That’s a different Tom Reynolds.
TeddySanFran @ 7
Yes!
That would complement his yellow belly nicely.
These guys are good at talking tough but when it gets right down to it they cower behind little children.
