(It's our pleasure to have John Laesch join us today for a special edition of Blue America. He's one of our Act Blue Candidates, running against the rapidly decomposing Dennis Hastert. Please welcome him in the comments section, and you can give to his campaign here.)
In July of this year, John Laesch made his FDL debut in an online chat as part of our Blue America series. At that point he seemed like a longshot, running against entrenched GOP political hack and Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert. Now Hastert can't keep his story straight about what he knew when regarding online sexual predator Mark Foley, and is in standard GOP denial mode despite the fact that many say they told Hastert about Foley's problems long ago. Without Hastert's protection and enabling, Foley's predatory behavior would have no doubt been purged from the House long ago. It's Hastert's stock in trade — he gutted the House Ethics Committee to protect Tom DeLay — why would anyone expect anything else?
But now it looks like the chickens have come home to roost, and John Laesch is still the honest, intelligent, sincere and viable alternative to the entrenched DC corruption that Hastert represents. When John joined us for his Blue America session in July, Howie had this to say:
If John Laesch doesn’t succeed in dislodging Hastert it won’t be through lack of the personal qualities that define worthy leadership. And it won’t be through lack of motivation. John’s younger brother, Sgt. Pete Laesch, currently stationed in Iraq, asked John to run against the gargantuan rubber stamp who represents their district in Congress.
John is 32 years old and grew up in West Africa where his missionary parents were stationed. They moved to a farm in Newark, Illinois when John was 12. He enlisted in the Navy when he was 21 and served as an intelligence analyst in Bahrain, monitoring terrorist activity and analyzing foreign political and military structures, winning numerous citations and meritoriously rising 5 ranks within 3 years.
After leaving the military he earned a degree in History from Illinois State University. He volunteered for Dennis Kucinich’s campaign and in 2004 worked as campaign manager for progressive Democrat Dr. David Gill. (I was impressed yesterday to see Laesch make an impressive pitch for Gill on Daily Kos, at a time when non-DCCC candidates are scrambling, some desperately, for attention, endorsements and campaign cash. Read his Kos dairy; it shows what kind of a man he is.)
John has embraced the netroots enthusiastically and has run an open, grassroots campaign. I like it when candidates start off reporting to interested citizens rather than to party bosses Inside-the-Beltway. Laesch’s outspoken criticism of Bush’s war and his public embrace of progressive values-driven solutions to controversial issues hasn’t made him a darling on D.C. Democratic Party bosses. But with yard signs sprouting up all over DeKalb, Kendall, Lee, DuPage, Henry, and Whiteside Counties, John’s independent approach might well be exactly the right prescription for victory in a district where Democrats are heavily outnumbered by Republicans.
But even in a Republican-leaning district, like the 14th, Laesch’s commonsense approach to the crucial issues of the day are far more in sync with voters’ concerns than Hastert’s, whose voting record defines rubber stamp support for Bush’s catastrophic agenda. On health care, local development (and resultant skyrocketing property taxes), education, a realistic national energy, etc, Hastert has become more and more completely out of touch with Main Street as he has utterly embraced Wall Street. Laesch’s positions grow out of his Main Street values and out of his sturdy, all-American character.
In his dignified, almost self-effacingly modest manner John explains to FDL why he’s running: "Like the other 50 fighting Dems, I am just a guy that can’t stand the direction our country is being led. I wanted to do something about it… and that road started in 2002 with the signing of the ‘Blank check for Iraq.’ My younger brother, Sgt. Pete Laesch, is serving in Iraq and asked me to defeat Denny back in 2003. When he received his orders for Iraq (2005), I stepped up to run."
John already won his primary and now Democrats are united behind his race to replace an out-of-touch, entrenched, corrupt Speaker of the House with a fresh, energetic young man with integrity, strength and vision. John needs help to get out his message. I can’t imagine a candidate as forthright and independent as John is going to get sufficient help from Rahm Emanuel’s DCCC. It’s up to us.
(Actually the DCCC Stakeholder did wind up linking to John's Blue America session, so we have to give them props for that.)
John is a fantastic candidate with true progressive values who needs our help more than ever now that Hastert is on the ropes. If you're sick of the GOP machine, the excuse making, the lack of accountability, the lies and the coverups, please consider giving to John's campaign and cheer him on in the comments section. On behalf of everyone at FDL we want to thank him for joining us today.

Hi John!
John thanks so much for joining us today. It’s very exciting and you’ve been great coming out swinging against Hastert. How are people responding?
Welcome back to FDL, John! The outrage against Hastert at the netroots level is huge and palpable. Can you sense it taking hold in the 14th CD yet?
YEA … John!!
Great being here!
I just got done reading the entire blog – you did not miss a thing.
I will be happy to answer any questions or take advice on how to hander “pagegate.”
Respectfully,
John Laesch
Welcome back, John — great of you to join us this evening. Life in your district a little busy these days?
Sorry if the site is a little slow, folks, bear with us, Jamie & John are working on it.
Welcome back, John!
Welcome John! We’re cheering for you from Chicago!
The campaign was busy BEFORE the scandal.
We have been working hard to get people active in their precincts and recruit/train new people.
It was exciting before and it is sleepless now.
I feel good about the way things are going.
Respectfully,

John,
If you haven’t yet, check this out.
Bay Buchanan: “They failed the parents of this country is what they did”
http://www.crooksandliars.com/
Hello, Mr. Laesch.
I don’t need to tell you that the Foley coverup isn’t the only reason Dennis Hastert needs to go. It’s just sufficient reason in and of itself.
I guess what I’m saying, before I go teach my evening class, is: Best of luck to you. Give him the truth, and let him think it’s hell.
We’ve been asking Democratic challengers to ask the Republican incumbents if they plan to vote for Hastert as Speaker should– God forbid– the Republicans manage to steal the November elections and retain power in the House. Yours is the one district where that won’t work. Have you made common cause with the guy running against Shimcus?
I just wanted to hop on and say thank you to all of you at FDL for all that you do for John… it’s always appreciated!

John,
Two questions:
1. Are there any debates with Hastert still left on your schedule?
2. Have all of your remaining TV, Radio and Newspapers spots been constructed or will you still have time/money to focus on Hastert’s value system (Party first over everthing else including our children!)?
John, thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to be here. I think you are in an important position to ask that the facts and individual responsibilities be brought to light by way of a full and independent investigation. Did anyone, anyone at all, take appropriate action to prevent Foley’s contact with the young men serving as pages?
Raw story reporting conservatives are asking for Hastert resignation…
Your district runs almost all the way across northern Illinois, from close to the Mississippi River clear across to the outer Chicago suburbs. How are you set for volunteers across such a wide geographic territory, and are there places that are more supportive for you than others?
The point to bring up over and over again is:
“How could you vote for someone who protects child molesters? Is this who you want representing your children’s future and well being?”
Good Frame of the Issue — Breach of Trust
Can’t trust them on:
* Homeland Security
* Executing a War
* Planning for Victory
* Secure the borders
* Protect our children
* Disaster recovery
Great question!
He should resign. We have had some abused children write the campaign and encourage us to ask for a resignation.
I will keep asking that question.
respectfully,
John laesch
Howie Klein @ 13
Hi Mr. Laesch,
I worked for many years in your district (at FNAL), and I know a lot of folks excited at the prospect of your representing them.
I had a couple questions about how you might draw a contrast, and what we might be able to do:
1. Have you ever had a similar experience with a problem person within any of your organizations, and how did you handle it?
2. As you know, Christy Hardin Smith here, Glenn Greenwald, and Josh Marshall have been doing excellent work that we can zap (via “Spotlight”) to media organizations. Which local media would it have the largest effect for us to work on keeping informed?
They’ve hung their hat on “We knew about the emails but not the IM’s”. Not necessarily advice, and I doubt the least bit new coming from me, but I think in your position I might keep pointing something out two things about Hasterts’ positions so far. First, at no point has he said anything like “I wish I had realized earlier on what a red flag those emails were”. Second, by not informing the Democratic member of the page committee (or, say, the Democratic pages), he certainly presents the picture of someone very conscious of the red flags those emails were.
Congratulations, John, on a very big week for your campaign. You’ve shown real leadership as these events have unfoled, and a strong ability to move quickly for the benefit of the people of your district. It’s a credit to how much work you’ve done over the past year–particularly at building a strong network in the Progressive blogs.
My question: What are your plans for next week? Any key public appearances you plan to make that we could cover? What can people do to help–both those of us who are far away from IL and those who are close by?
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and answer questions.
Welcome John, and best of luck!
Sidney Blumenthal had excellent advice, I think, in his book salon thread.
Sidney Blumenthal @

This focusses the attention where it’s absolutely deserved. Republicans, with Hastert as their leader, are so money-grubbing, and so screwed up in their priorities (as even Bay Buchanan admits), that they can’t even help themselves from taking money this obviously and publicly tainted.
And I think this is a good tack for a Democratic challenger to take, as well. It focusses on the problems of the Republicans in power, not on the lurid details of what Foley himself did. His actions certainly won’t find many defenders these days, on either side of the aisle (sleazeballs like Matt Drudge excepted, of course).
OT (slightly)
Who would have thought Fitzmas would come in October?
Mr. Laesch:
Would you care to comment on how far up you think the chain of command the ‘page cover up’ travels? Some might argue that Hastert reports to Boehner and that Boehner reports to Rove.
John! So good to have this chance to hear from you. I sent some help via Blue America this weekend. What’s the latest news from your brother? Is he still in Iraq?
On Hastert, someone here mentioned this weekend he may still have a teaching liscense. If so shouldn’t the good people of Illinois reconsider that?
Let’s face it John Laesch: This group of Republicans in power just don’t care and they need to be replaced.
They don’t care about 19 year old American soldiers, 16 year old American Pages, or 65 year old senior citizens, to name a few.
Or that question!dead last @ 19
Having grown up in Chicago suburbs, I still am interested in happenings there,[obviously I’m in Texas now].
I hope you run away with the race. You are surely needed in Congress and northern Illinois deserves better than what it has had.
BTW, phonetically, how do we pronounce your last name?

Kristen thank you too. Your idealism is inspirational and we appreciate everyone on the campaign and their commitment to hanging in there. Without all of you none of this would be happening now – it really looks like John can win and that would be a huge victory for all progressives.
I wanted to share a short update with everyone here at FDL.
First I want to thank the creative team who put the catchy video together! That is great. People love it and it has spread like a wildfire here.
Here is a look at what we have planned.
1) October 7th is a big day for us. We are canvassing precincts throughout the district as part of the DNC’s national day of canvassing.
2) Upcoming video showings of “Iraq for Sale – The War Profiteers” on college campuses.
3) More canvassing – Joe McKeown has been working the district up and down!
4) There are offices in Aurora, Elgin, St. Charles, Kendall County, Lee County and Whiteside County. This gives us a broad reach. Most (50%) of the voters are in Kane County. Kane and Kendall County are two of the fastest growing counties in America.
5) Voter registration nears soon and early voting begins on Oct. 16th in Illinois.
6) Lots of interview
7) Still asking Hastert for a debate.
I am sure that there is lots more going on.
Sincerely,
John Laesch
Welcome Mr. Laesch,
The National Republicans have been trying very hard to focus the elections on the “terror” issue and to paint Democrats as weak on national security. But a lot of news lately should be casting doubt on the wisdom of that strategy. In your district, how is this Republican strategy playing, and how are you responding to it? Are your constituents following the recent news on the NIE, Woodward’s book, the detainee legislation, and so on?
John Laesch, do you prefer to call Hastert one of the “Foley Five” or the “Leader of the Corruption and Coverup Congress?”
I can’t choose.
Hi Mr. Laesch. I’ve asked a certain candidate who voted for the torture bill to return my 50 dollar contribution; this morning a very nice and disappointed volunteer in his office said they would be sending me a check. So I’ll be passing that fifty bucks on to you — um. . . You’re not planning on voting for any torture bills, are you?
Here’s the frame:
“If they can’t protect a group of teenagers in their care in their own House, how can they protect the nation?”
Hey John!
How did the press conference go today? Is the Chicago-area press as skeptical of Hastert as the MSM is turning out to be?
Best regards –
Mr. Laesch,
I was not following your race before this weekend, but I am now heading over to make a donation. As a mother, I am furious with the latest revelation about Mr. Hastert. I hope that you point out to parents in your district how he covered his butt before looking out for kids. And teachers, nurses and other childcare workers, who would be in big trouble if they’d heard this evidence and did not pass it on.
best of luck.
Is the Bay Buchanan link at C&L working for others?
According to ABC News GOP pages were warned about Foley as early as 5 years ago. Democratic pages say they never received a warning.
This just keeps getting, if possible, worse and worse.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 26
Funny you should bring up Rove. Among the most far right (and homophobic) loons in the GOP, they’re always screaming about Rove and Mehlman and a “gay Mafia” running the GOP. I gave it back to them big time this morning on Down With Tyranny.
By the way, since it’s come out that Hastert was involved in (or orchestrating) the Predatorgate cover-up, contributions for John at out BlueAmerica ActBlue page have DOUBLED.
The NIE report confirms exactly what I have been saying all along. Prisoner abuse, occupation of Iraq and a continued presence in the Middle East will only perpetuate hate, violence and terrorism.

I agree on the thought though I prefer: If you can’t trust them with your kids, how can you trust them with your country?
How are local media and papers covering the Foley affair and Hastert’s role in it? What are local people saying?
I love the video above but there is data that needs to be updated on it. Unfortunately, another 100 soldiers have died since it was put together.
Kristen at 40 — As a former prosecutor who used to work these sorts of cases with our office and our police investigators, the one thing that you can always count on is that these types of cases ALWAYS get worse. It’s unfortunate, but true, that when you find a tiny indicator or red flag, there are almost always a few more to follow, and then more, and more and…well, you get the picture.
Hi, John –
Your candidacy and campaign certainly offer the voters of your district a clean, fresh alternative to Hastert, who seems to be incapable of making any decisions that are not purely political.
This incident with Foley has shone a bright and unflattering light on Mr. Hastert, one that will show the stark contrast between his political priorities and your desire to actually serve the people.
For me, this is a basic issue of breaking a sacred trust that cannot be repaired. How will you convince voters that their trust is safe with you? What can the voters expect from you in the way of accountability, something that has not only been sorely lacking in the Republican Congress, but which seems to have been deliberately avoided?
Thanks for all you are trying to do!
ccmask @ 44
All the new videos coming out since this weekend have the new data, 2700 instead of 2600
John,
I checked out the “issues page” on your website, and generally liked what I saw. The word “accountability” near the end jumped out at me, especially given the news of the last few days.
Paired with “trust,” I think that’s the key word for a campaign like yours: Rebuilding trust and reestablishing accountability.
Trust and accountability cover every item on your issues list, from health care to energy policy to foreign policy to Iraq.
Lots of time to put new commercials together!
Mad Dogs @ 15
Mr. Laesch, do you think Hastert could smooth everything over by claiming he was so busy working on his next real estate deal that he wasn’t paying attention to stories of possible sexual predators?

I was wondering too if Hastert’s current problems would remind people that corruption and Hastert are not exactly strangers.
Good question and some people do ask it.
I just tell them that I have pretty much given up my American dream to run for Congress. In 2003 I started sleeping on campaign office floors and eventually gave up my small business.
People don’t make life-changing decisions like that if they plan on joining the “same-ol-same-ol status quo” in D.C.
It is true and many synics are convinced.
There are two kinds of people in politics; Those who want change and those who want power. I have no interest in power. This of course is a stark contrast to my opponent.

Hi John,
For me, the issue in the page scandal is this – the Speaker of the House was aware of this situation for months, and maybe years. He did nothing but cover up the situation.
In a large group of people, there will be a few who are predators or otherwise dangerous to kids. The important thing is to deal with the situation. They didn’t do that. That’s the story here. Whether that story will play as well as focusing on the predatory behavior or the details of that behavior is another story, but I think Democrats ought to focus on the government responsibility issue.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 45
As a pastor who has worked with families and parishes that have been touched by child abuse, the same is true for them as well. This will get worse for them – much worse – before it gets better. The best thing for the pages, their families, and their friends is to surround them with support.
Watching the legal system go after those who committed the abuse and those who either covered it up (or chose to look away when signs of it appeared) is also very, very helpful.
I have been using “Honesty, Integrity & Change.”
I like the accountability thing. I used it in my press conference today.

Two points, John L:
First, I hope that your web person can get updates on your campaign website every day between now and the election.
The story there now is already 2 days old. Giving people a reason to keep coming back to the website may help the buzz and increase the donations. New postings help do that.
And Lord knows, there’s plenty worth posting there. (For example, just linking to all the revelations concerning Hastert and other members of the Corruption-and-Coverup Team could give material for postings several times a day!)
Second, your presence here creates a “buzz” also and I am heading over to the Act Blue website for donating to John Laesch right now to plunk some money down.
I headed up a “Democratic Vote Protection Team” made up of other lawyers in 2004, but that was work for one day. Giving regularly to Act Blue candidates that Howie brings here gives another outlet for us to make the next 5 weeks count.
(And of course, if we’re in a district like yours where progress can be made, we need to be on the streets as well.)
I’m in John. Good luck to you! Beat them back.
John — are you finding the voters in your district more concerned about economic uncertainty — jobs, SS, retirement, health coverage, etc — or security issues, or is there some other theme getting their attention? Have you found a need to refocus your themes to address different issues?
That video is genius! Great graphics, catchy, biting, clear sound bites – a person can’t take their eyes or ears off it. It reminds me of the kind of ad (and energy) I saw when Paul Wellstone first ran for the Senate many years ago. That’s a compliment, John.
This ad should be modified for every Young Turk Dem taking on a Repub incumbent this fall. And oh, how karmic is the footage of the guy being dragged off to jail given the events of the past few days. Is the video just for the internet or is it being run on TV?
Jane,
Time to put the Act Blue donation link on the mast head. I was going to donate $100 to John’s campaign, but I don’t see the link.
People have been asking me what the legal liability is for Mr. Hastert.
I don’t know, but I do know that he should do the right thing and resign.
I want this race to be a referendum on Iraq – not a referendum on a scandal-ridden speaker.

Below is my rough draft on my press release regarding the detainee bill.
- – - – - – -
Laesch, teaching at Hastert’s old high school, blasts Hastert on Detainee Bill
John Laesch, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 14th District criticized Hastert today for his support of legislation passed by the House on Tuesday that would encourage torture of prisoners and suspend habeas corpus. Laesch’s remarks came as he addressed government students on Thursday at Yorkville High School, where Hastert long taught and coached.
“Hastert’s detainee bill will fuel hate, incite more violence, grow terrorism and endanger our own troops, possibly for generations to come.”
During the presentation, Laesch showed a photo from Abu Ghraib to the students and spoke about the effect of these images of inciting more violence against Americans in the Middle East. Laesch asked students how they thought such images were perceived in the region and suggested such incidents serve as a recruiting tool for criminals like Bin Laden.
Laesch added, “as long as Dennis Hastert approves of prisoner abuse, Americans will face a growing terrorism threat.”
Laesch, who is a veteran of Naval Intelligence, suggested the United States should not be in the business of setting a dangerous precedent in regard to individual nations interpreting the Geneva Conventions at will. “How will we respond,” he asked, “when another nation inevitably mistreats American prisoners of war, because this precedent frees them to interpret their compliance as they see fit?”
Laesch also spoke about the suspension of habeas corpus, one of our most cherished civil rights. “This bill overrides habeas corpus and gives a retroactive free pass for his past crimes. It is difficult to believe that this is happing in America.”
“This legislation is simply wrong,” said Laesch. “The only reason I can think of to pass such morally and ethically wrong legislation, when experts agree torture serves no practical purpose, is to protect an administration that has already engaged in these criminal practices. And, frankly, that is what Dennis Hastert is protecting George Bush by shredding the Constitution.

John,
I missed your earlier visit, and I believe I’m the lesser for it. It’s great to have such an inspiring alternative to Hastert. Welcome.
I don’t know if this is the place to mention it, but it seems that the noise machine is saying that ABC overplayed the former page’s description of the ‘notice’ of Foley’s ‘oddities’ to a page class by saying the pages were “warned.” However, if the point was to tell the pages that Foley was “odd,” but that they shouldn’t think anything of it…they were enabling his grooming and choosing of his targets. Furthermore, they pre-emptively minimized any discomfort the pages might feel, making it even less likely that they would report Foley.
I hope that’s not too OT, but I thought it an important point in the leadership’s non-response to this matter.
I can’t stick around now, but I wish you the best of luck in unseating Hastert.
I never thought of that – We have raised more than $10K in the past 48-hours and I have a feeling that this is just the beginning.

Hello John –
I’ve followed your campaign, and supported you, since your visit to YearlyKos. Not a Hastert fan, I’ve always wondered what could turn this election around. Now we know: decent people shouldn’t be represented by an enabler of pedophilia. All Hastert’s press releases, townhall meetings, and webpages about “protecting our children from internet predators” happened while he was protecting an internet predator of children from justice.
Decent people really hate hearing about this, and decent people shouldn’t be represented by someone who let it happen. I hope this gives you an opening to talk to more voters about all the other ways Hastert has failed them.
Thanks for your service to our country, and thanks for running this race. And thanks in advance for winning it, because I believe you will do that.

We’re all pulling for you. Good luck on November 7th!!
We checked our Webhits after that video was posted on our site.
It is addicting. Hastert’s office kept clicking it again and again and again. How funny is that.

I look forward to sharing our victory on Nov. 7th and at YearlyKos II – your continued support is meaningful.
Thanks for everything.

What with the Hastert implosion, a special media outreach to national media might be fruitful – let them know Denny has a viable opponent…
well, I just sent in my contribution (the first time, I took a pass — but now that you have a real shot, I guess I wanna jump on the bandwagon!) :)
that being said, a procedural question. What happens if Hastert resigns from the House, and decides not to run. Does his name stay on the ballot?
nice stuff from Bloomberg news:
John L, what about creating a campaign commercial that consists of (1) something from Hastert, and then (2) just quoting Republicans about Hastert and/or the problem of coverup?
For example:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/…..refer=home
http://www.time.com/time/natio…..93,00.html
Former GOP Congressman and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/15106507/
No luck involved – hard work and money.

This bothers me a great deal on a personal level, because I have four children, know and have known a lot of teachers, and Hastert is a former teacher – so I just keep thinking he should have been by far more sensitive to and prompt about investigating this rigorously than a Speaker who was, say, a former businessperson.
My guess is that his name would stay on the ballot, but I do not know.
His early statements suggest that he does not plan on resigning. Maybe he would table this conversation on Republican values for a fair, open and honest debate.

John Laesch

Oh, how funny indeed!
Given Capitol Hill’s comprehension of the toobz, Denny’s employees probably think by re-clicking they are causing everyone else to get a busy signal!!

People have been asking me what the legal liability is for Mr. Hastert.
Parry.
I don’t know, but I do know that he should do the right thing and resign.
Thrust
I want this race to be a referendum on Iraq – not a referendum on a scandal-ridden speaker.
Riposte.
I think you might have been a natural fencer, but I am so much happier you elected for politic this run through. In So IN I am seeing all the “scarey Pelosi” ads (which are kind of funny because most people in So.Indiana have no idea who she is) but has anyone with DCCC et al mentioned any “Scarey Denny” ads?
They would write themselves.
You’re my top pick John, the one I am hoping and praying for hardest. Fight the good fight.
John, this may come as a surprise to you but that cat killer Frist just announced the U.S. should cut and run– from Afghanistan!! What do you think of this?
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan war against Taliban guerrillas can never be won militarily and called for efforts to bring the Islamic militia and its supporters into the Afghan government.
The Tennessee Republican said he learned from briefings that Taliban fighters were too numerous and had too much popular support to be defeated on the battlefield.
“You need to bring them into a more transparent type of government,” Frist said during a brief visit to a U.S. and Romanian military base in the southern Taliban stronghold of Qalat. “And if that’s accomplished, we’ll be successful.”
Afghanistan is suffering its heaviest insurgent attacks since a U.S.-led military force toppled the Taliban in late 2001 for harboring al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
JL – you mentioned you hoped this election would be about the disaster of the iraq war – both the decision to invade and the operation of the war.
But this current mess can be conflated with the mess in Iraq by saying the Republican leadership do not make decisions in the country’s interest, only to further their thrust for power and money. It is not either/or — it is that both together prove Hastert unfit for office.
No cut-n-run here.
We have to counter the GOP fear-based message with a message of hope.
Respectfully,
John Laesch

CNN – Cafferty linking Woodward disclosures re Bush to Woodward’s disclosures re Nixon 30 years ago, and drawing the parallel with Nixon eventually having a choice between impeachment trial vs resignation.
John –are you finding voters in your district are beginning to think of these potential parallels? Do you qet questions on this?
John,
Somehow, someway, the right-wing spin machine is going to blame YOU for Hasterts actions.

You’re absolutely right, *ilson. Just like the race being highlighted here right now, EVERY House race in the country has slipped over the weekend for the GOP. Get on the phone doggies, to your local paper and HOUND their DC reporter to corner your local GOOPer on this. Each Rethug has to be pinned on this – Do you or don’t you support Dennis Hastert? Then you or somebody else has to get the reporters to ask that same question again and again until Hastert steps down or we vote!
Well, Americans are disgusted!
I don’t know if people are connecting Nixon to Bush yet, but I have been for the last 2-3 years.

Fellow Illinoisian here. I’m not in your District, and hope to volunteer some weekend canvassing soon. Thanks for running!
You’re instincts here are on-target.

The base in Illinois is very anti-Iraq war. It’s appalling how some in the Illinois leadership like Rahm and Obama act like the Iraq war elephant is NOT in the living room! Please keep the attention there, and to quote FDL’s TRex “AAAAAttttttackkkkk!!!!!!”.
Although you shouldn’t miss any opportunity you can to tie any republican corruption back to how they generally do business, especially in Iraq. Check out Glenn Greenwald’s post on how Hastert is still trying to cover up the scandal.
You might ask, what else is Haster covering up? and tie it back to Iraq. Two issues with one scandal.
our local GOP Congressional candidate has a 16yo son – I plan to ask him how he feels now about wanting to go to DC and make his first vote on the Hill for Denny Hastert.
GrandmaJ @ 106
Can’t trust them to make the case for war.
Can’t trust them to make good on the reconstruction promises to Katrina victims along the Gulf Coast.
Can’t trust them to provide an honest prescription drug program that benefits consumers and not drug companies and insur*nce companies.
Can’t trust them to go after war profiteers.
Can’t trust them to hold each other accountable with their handling of Mark Foley’s conduct.
Can’t trust them to keep Congress informed.
Most of all, we can’t trust them to own up to their errors, so they can be avoided in the future.
There’s just one thing left to do – hold them accountable at the ballot box, so a Democratic majority can hold them accountable in January.
I hear ya… I’ve got it covered… watch the news the next couple of days.

We teachers, and others, here in Oklahoma, do not tolerate those who commit crimes against our children. The punishment is swift and sure for this type of horror. You may take this to the bank. Hastert is a traitor to his entrusted professions (teacher and the peoples representative). The teacher’s number one concern is to look out for the kids. There IS nothing more important.
CNN: Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council, says this was caused by fear of gay bashing. “This is what happens when you tolerate gays; you get Congressmen chasing boys in the halls of Congress.” But he can’t quite criticize the Republican leadership, who were afraid of being criticized for bashing. [sigh]
Does that line play in Peoria? Or Chicago?
John,
Tony Perkins of some “grassroots” org, the Family Research Council, is saying on CNN just now that maybe the House leaders were fearful of raising notice of the Foley affair because they feared exposure to a backlash for being gay bashers. Do you find this credible? Do you think you could forcefuly refute this argument?
John, to paraphrase somebody or the other: “You go to campaign with the issues you have, not the issues you wish you have.” This Predatorgate mess is out there – seize the moment!
Future Congressman Laesch — Thank you so much for sharing your statement on the torture bill with us. I’m glad to know your position.
Dear FDL,
I will check back here later for more advice and perhaps to answer a few questions.
I have to check out for a bit and work on our next commercial. Your financial support has been greatly appreciated and will make this a reality.
I have some other ideas and ways that people can help.
1) If people could suggest our candidacy to DFA, MoveOn.org, Barbara Boxer PAC for Change or others…
2) Ed Schultz suggested that people should start calling Oprah and asking her to have me on her show. The last time she was in Chicago she said that she wanted to help the children.
The best way to help the children working in our capital is to fire Hastert.
Respectfully,
John Laesch
Just a reminder that the only sitting Speaker since 1860 to be defeated for re-election was (as a result of the GOP tsunami after the House Bank scandal):
Democrat Tom FOLEY in 1994.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 120
That’s how all the teachers I know would see it…which just leaves me wondering: what happened to this man? I know a fairly large number of people who know Denny personally, and will tell you he used to be a “regular guy” and has changed profoundly, but this? How do you pursue, as your first vocation, the care of children and come to this in the end?
My best to all on FDL – keep fighting for Freedom.
Howie, Jane – true friends and I appreciate the continued news updates.

Thanks for coming by John. We’d be happy to have you pop in any time. Don’t wait for an invitation. One of us! One of us! DfA hasn’t endorsed you?????
Special Blue America guest Wednesday– the guy who blew the whistle on the corrupt Republican Machine in Ohio: Marc Dann. He’s running for Attorney General and he wants to talk about election integrity. This should be a great one: 2:30 PT, this Wednesday.

Pass it on. If nothing else, the last few days have illustrated why Dennis Hastert shouldn’t be in Congress any more.
Didn’t the GOP break the unwritten DC law not to campaign against leadership of the opposing party when they went after Tom Daschle?
Our national party leaders must make John Laesche’s campaign against the Speaker a marquee race in the next five weeks. They owe at least that much to America’s children.
Howie – re your 105 –
how did Frist make it through med school and into a surgical transplant program? Every time this man opens his mouth, stupidity falls out; I am happy he will be out of the Senate come January, but I fear for his potential patients.
His latest comments on Afghanistan and the Taliban tell me that this man is no student of history.
I imagine John would have a few retorts for Mr. Frist on this subject!
Just a useless comment, but Wow. NFW! Hastert can lose re-election this year? That is just so kikas. I only read up to 101, but John Laesch gets it. Go John. Howard Dean’s 50 state thing is not very stupid now, is it?
I was just over to Blue America and saw that he had about 186 hits. I was pissed at Hastert last Friday(I think) and threw in a donation then and it was at about 102 hits. I think that it is safe to say folks are worked up about replacing Hastert.
DFA should definitely be brought on board. Probably had other races to concentrate on but with Dean’s 50 state strategy now paying off big time, let’s make this race with JL against hastert (along with Ned Lamont and Patty Wetterling) the races I most want to win.
OT: Now that John Laesch has gone for a bit, I’ll point out that we got Steve Porter his 100 commercials, plus a few extra and maybe enough for a few pizzas for late night phone bank sessions – $2,702.25 altogether.
I haven’t read all these comments but am pulling for my fellow Illinoisan John Laesch.
You know, Hastert is so stupid that on the fifth anniversary of 9/11, standing before an open microphone with the rest of Congress on either side of him, completely botched the words to “God Bless America”, how on earth can someone be so stupid on such a solemn occasion?
I will pledge $25.00 to your campaign today, let’s take back America.
LindaR @ 35
WOW! I didn’t know that you could do that. You couldn’t have picked a BETTER candidate than John Laesch.
If you’re not in IL (I’m not)… but I have sent as much money as I can and I’m getting ready to write a bunch of LTEs. I also called all Hastert offices asking for his resignation.
If everyone here did that I think it would be helpful. What else can we do John?
Cujo359 @ 137
He e-mailed me this morning to tell me how excited he is about the TV ads we bought him. They’re up on his website if you want to take a look. He said he’s using the one about Iraq with the Blue America money.
wow – John is one amazing guy and I’m looking forward to seeing him in Congress!
Shucks
I missed it.
Laesch had a great fact-based campaign going here before last week. And way more traction than would normally be expected facing such a powerful incumbent.
I have to admit I feel a little jealousy towards the Right on this one though.
Can you imagine the push-polling Karl could do with Denny’s high school wrestling coach credentials and Foleygate?
But, we are above that kind of behavior here,
Right?
CNN shows Tony Snow saying: “. . . the President just fell off the turnip truck.”
From the larger quote, “Woodward’s book quotes makes it sound like . . . the President just fell off the turnip truck.”
Thank you, Tony. TRex?
TeddySanFran @ 132
They weren’t shy about dissing Tom Foley (the Democratic Speaker of the House until 1994) when he opposed a term limits initiative in Washington state.
Here is a possible reason why Hastert was so upset when Jefferson’s office was raided by the FBI. We all wondered why they were all rallying around a Dem? I think we now know why.
What evidence were in those offices prior to the raid? Shredder party anyone?
Congressman Laesh. I like the sound of that. http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica#8777
Siun @ 141
Siun– good press angle: John told us that Hastert’s office keeps watching the video. It’s in a comment by him above.
If I were Laesch I would read up on the Illinois State Statues on reporting suspected molestation and abuse then throw that out at Hastert. That will be something the local folks will understand.
John,
My question is, which was their true reasoning?
Not doing anything because they didn’t think the e-mails were that suggestive…..or
not doing anything because they didn’t want to be accused of gay bashing?
I don’t buy either but that is what is out there today.
AZ Matt @ 149
I’m going to pass this comment on to his campaign manager in case he doesn’t see it.
There has also been talk of some kind of pre-Congressional investigation about Denny himself having that kind of problem with his students.
I live in the adjacent IL-13 where Republican Congresswoman Judy Biggert is a rubber stamp nonentity who will be hard to take out here in affluent DuPage County. So I’m sending John a contribution– anything to help take out an enabler of child molesters. Up with John, down with Denny!
So, the Shimkus containment strategy was, Don’t tell the Democrat or the GOP woman on the Page Board. West Virginia GOP House member and third Page Board member Shelley Moore Capito says she heard about the entire thing for the first time from the media last Friday:
http://americablog.blogspot.co…..dicts.html
I think Mr. Laesch’s request from above re: Oprah, might be a really good idea.
She is very active in trying to protect children from predators, having been abused herself.
I’m off to send her an email now.
Anyone who wants to take John’s suggestion can contact the Oprah Show by email to suggest she have him on as a guest.
New Thread.

jeffreyw @ 122
What a joke. These are the idiots who have made opposition to gay marriage and homosexuality a rallying cry before every national election.
And another thing – we are talking about pedophilia, not homosexuality. We are talking about an adult who was using his position of power to get access to young boys.
Don’t let those hypocrites reframe this thing. The gaybashing excuse is as pathetic as all the other ones they’ve come up with today.
joysness @ 154
Great! I’ll do it too. I’m not too confident thought because she doesn’t usually do politics!
victoria2dc @ 151
Why bother? Stay focused on the issues!!!
The media and Hastert himself will take care of Hastert
AZ Matt @ 149
I did that and posted on it a couple of days ago in another thread here at FDL.
katymine @ 145
Sorry I can’t find cites, but at the time there were several plausible theories about what Hastert was really afraid of. I don’t remember anything like this, though, so it’s fair to say that this particular angle is a new one.
victoria2dc @ 151
This is maddening, FDL isn’t working!! ; )
One more try…
WHY BOTHER? STAY FOCUSED ON THE ISSUES!!!
The media and Hastert himself will take care of Hastert
Cozumel @ 82
You bet he did. Woodward is one of the most anal, most careful journalists in this country. He and his assistants do a tremendous amount of research before one of his books is written and published.
There is no way he would make these allegations unless he had lots to back them up with.
TeddySanFran @ 132
Excellent point Teddy – when I think of party leaders one of the few who light up my heart is Dr. Dean so guess I’ll start with him. Any and all suggestions of party leaders worth contacting will be much appreciated.
FYI John- this is link to a page that itself has several links about Age of Consent. Gives a good general discussion (for teens, not lawyers) of the issues. Click through to find general discussion, FAQs, and a chart for AOC in different states as of 2001.

I just dropped fifty in the bucket, not just because of this latest scandal, but your positions on the Iraq war, the treatment of our veterans, and protecting the vote.

That’s it! Let’s give some stones for the sling so John Laesch can take down this Goliath!
John Laesch @ 116
Uh care to respond to that a little more John???
Mr. Laesch don’t hesitate to bring up the gay child molsters (and the possible cover up) ties to Hastert every chance you get.
BTW remind the people of yur military backround often as well.
John, I don’t know if you’re still here, but just wanted to send a personal thank you to you, for having the courage and foresight to run against Hastert from the get-go.
We met at YearlyKos and I can vouch for Jane’s description of you: dignified, modest, intelligent, and sincere.
You are the anti-Hastert… I look forward to your victory in November!
