(Alternate title: Uncle Tom's Closet, Pt. III)
You know, of all the pathetic examples of Reich Wing queers who carry water for the Republican party, I think Matt Drudge may well be the lowest of the low. Worse than man-whore Jimmy/Jeff Gannon/Guckert. Worse than Ken "Girlfriend in a Coma" Mehlman. And yes, worse even than Mark "Chicken Hawk" Foley. Because Drudge, for whatever reasons, is so deeply buried in the Wingnut Wurlitzer's inner workings that he can float their talking points far, far ahead of everyone else. He is an essential greasy little cog in their propaganda machine, the one that enables them to pervert the national dialogue before it even begins. Drudge toes the GOP party line before most of them have even read their morning faxes from Karl Rove's office.
And Matt, honey, I have to say, "Drudge" really is the perfect name for you. Because if anyone more consistently gets down on his elbows and knees to slavishly gather the crumbs from beneath his Masters' table and then wipe the floor clean with his tongue, I don't know who it is.
My Future Husband Howie Klein completely nails it in an update to this post:
UPDATE: DRUDGE BLAMES THE UNDERAGE PAGES FOR SEDUCING POOR FOLEY
I keep forgetting that Matt Drudge is "officially in the closet." He's so well known in the gay community for being just another garden variety self-loathing gay Republican– didn't he try to "date" (or something) David Brock when Brock was still a right winger? Today Drudge tried to help Bush shill Tony Snow and ex-high school wrestling coach Denny Hastert to circle the wagons by making the outrageous and preposterous claims that the whole Predatorgate scandal and Republican cover-up is a Democratic election stunt and that the boys were the ones seducing poor Foley, not the other way around. He calls them "17-year old beasts." How about this son of a rich Republican contributor who says Foley grabbed his dick in a public restroom? It's probably standard procedure for a monster like Drudge, but that crap doesn't wash for gays or straights, just for sickos like Foley and Drudge. (And, of course, he's demanding that whoever leaked the IMs should be investigated.) What a complete turd this is. No shame whatsoever!
John Amato has the audios of Drudge's disgusting rant over at Crooks and Liars.
Right, Matt Drudge. Let me get this straight. Those 16 year old boys were just asking for it. They made themselves intentionally underage and lined up to be molested so that the Democrats could take Congress this fall? Those dirty, dirty tricksters!! So, is that why these boys from Republican families signed up to be Republican pages? Because they wanted to help the Democrats? How's that, again?
Excuse me while my head explodes.
Matt seems to think that those boys were just begging to be violated, just like the fifth of Bombay Sapphire he put away by himself last night was just begging to be drunk, sitting there on the shelf all cool and blue and delicious-looking, daring him, taunting him, talking to him like a bar of chocolate in an Edward Monkton cartoon:
Bombay Sapphire: You want me, Matt Drudge, don't you? You want me. YOU WANT ME!
Matt Drudge: No, Bombay Sapphire, I do not want you. For after the initial pleasure, there will be sickness, depravity, and guilt.
BS: That, Matt Drudge, is the REASON for my EXISTENCE! Are you to deny me THE REASON FOR MY EXISTENCE?
MD: No, Bombay Sapphire, I would not do that.
BS: Thank you.
(A sound of gulping is heard, followed by retching, and then a cell phone auto-dialing the number of a male escort service…)
If there's one thing I simply can't fathom, it is the Right Wing Queer. Okay, actually, I can fathom it, yes, that some men and women could be so full of self-loathing and yet so desperate for attention that they will sell out everyone of their own kind in order to claw their way to the low middle of the Reich Wing power structure. They get patted on the head and told that they're the Good Kind of Queer, the kind that licks the boots of the authoritarian elite. I can understand it, but I don't actually want to believe that they exist.
Nonetheless, they're out there, grand avatars of the two-tiered Republican philosophy of life: One set of rules for "Us" (i.e., the elite rulers of the GOP and their families) and another set of rules entirely for "The Rest of Them". Also, as I have explored in other posts, these people are willing to sell their souls to the Republicans because the Repugnican view of homosexuals so closely matches their own pathology; that their orientation is somehow wrong and should be pursued only in secrecy and shame.
They want to party like it's 1959.
There's a reason why Foleygate is unfolding on the Right side of the aisle. Because Republicans live for denial. It's that whole rightard "LA LA LA LA LA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!" approach to the world. In a culture where secrecy, lies, and repression are the coin of the realm, predators can operate unchecked, because NOBODY WANTS TO ADMIT WHAT'S HAPPENING. You can see this same mindset in the pathetic scramblings of the House leadership as they furiously compete to be the first to throw the others under the bus. "Problem? What problem? LA LA LA LA…NOT MY FAAAAULT!!"
These are the spoils of cowardice and lies. When you deny reality, you blind yourself to everything that is truly dangerous about your situation. As long as people are afraid to talk about the fact that Republican Congressmen can in fact be dangerous sexual predators of young boys, no one will be vigilant enough to stop these monsters before they strike. If Foley had been a Democrat, this would never have happened. Chances are that as a Democrat, he would have a healthier attitude toward his sexuality, and people in the Reality-Based community are attuned to the perils of denial and ignorance. We do send people to counseling when they need it. Because denying a problem never made it go away. It only makes it bigger. (See "Iraq, War In-" for more information.)
In the words of my father, "Son, nothing makes your ass into a target quite like burying your head in the sand."
Or, as in the case of Mr. Drudge, burying it up your ass.

I’ll never understand why any self-respecting gay man would be a republican, it just boggles my mind.
I’ll never understand why any self-respecting person would be a Republican.
hey bdu, is there anybody else here? *tap*tap* is this thing on?
I’m here.
Folks should be along shortly.
Someone go alert the folks in the last thread that we’re here.
Hi TRex.
Can I be a bridesmaid? I just love those dresses.
TRex- and this is an entirely serious question, how does Drudge support himself financially?
I know I need to get out more, but if you coined that “Reich Wing” moniker, I’ll buy you a goddamn beer when you come to Taos.
Hey nah!
These guys always give me that creepy Edgar J. Hoover kinda feeling.
I really find it ironic that the bill Foley sponsored, the GOP Congress passed and Bush signed into law to trumpet how better the GOP is than heathen depraved Democrats makes soliciting sex from someone under 18 a FEDERAL CRIME.. whereas if Foley had only been groping in person in DC, where the age is 16, then it would be a DC matter. ALTHOUGH, it is Still sexual harrassment worse than Clinton and I expect the GOP and MSM to quickly cover this 24/7 – (something tells me NOT.)
i mean sex on the Internet
I dunno, steve talbert, the MSM seems to be gettin’ pretty cranked up about it… they’ve even caught on to the “cover up” aspects and that that part is a REELY big issue…
Now Hunter @ kos is saying that the repubs tried to bargain with ABC to keep the story from getting out…
They got out all their shovels to bury it in BS, but started shoveling in the wrong spot. That hole just keeps getting bigger, but noone wants to admit mistakes.
Well, I’ll be darned. Republican Congressional candidate Vern Buchanon, who’s running for Krazy Katherine Harris’s seat, has removed the endorsement from Foley from his webpage. The endorsement from Hastert is still there, though.
Funny. He was so proud of it in the August 28 Sarasota Herald Tribune:
Normally, when sitting members of Congress vacate their seat, there is a hearty competition to see who will get anointed as the heir apparent. But with Harris more than 30 points behind Sen. Bill Nelson in most public polling in her sputtering bid for a U.S. Senate seat, the candidates seeking to replace her in the U.S. House have passed up asking Harris for help.
Instead, they have turned to other members of Florida’s congressional delegation. Vern Buchanan highlights an endorsement from Rep. Mark Foley…
JHF @ 9
You know, that one is actually mine.
I don’t drink, though. So you can buy me some ceviche or something!
I’m watching TDS: Trent Lott is attempting to downplay what happened.
I’m a mother. If I found out someone like Foley had put the moves on my kids, I would have been arrested for battery. And surgeons would need to remove the person’s head from his butt.
Love to stay and chat, but have to get ready to shout my lungs into tatters at the Twins game tomorrow.
Any Oakland fans who want to bet on the game, I give $20 to Tim Walz if we lose. If we win you must sing the ‘Balrog Fight Song’ for YouTube, send it to FDL, and give $20 to the ActBlue candidate of your choice.
You guys rock, and payoff is near.
The United States House of Representatives simply cannot survive with a leader who chose to protect a sexual predator rather than protect our children.
No more debate.
No more distraction.
Dennis Hastert must step down.
John Stewart’s all over this story.
I don’t give woodward too much credit anymore so when he said that tenet was so concerned about the attack that he KNEW it was coming, that he flew down and hand delivered the brief fo rice
woodward claims rice ignored the briefing
when the previous administration was faced with a similar threat, they put this countries entire force on red alert and the incident was avoided
though rice was given an even more dire brief then the preious adminstration, she ignored it
and the walls came down
the new york times;
there it is, now it’s a fact, the alarm was raised and the people in charge of defending America stood down
the state department says it’s a fact, and rice herself says she doesn’t even remember the brief
now, someone if there are any trolls in here who still supports the president come in and give me the talking points you are going to use to defend this deriliction of duty
I want to see someone try
from woodwards book;
so rice has the nerve to say she doesn’t remember the meeting, the state department says this definately happened
this is deriction of duty, there is no other way to look at this
someone get a troll in here to tell me they think rice is competant
someone get a troll in here to tell me they think 9/11 would have happened if there was someone in office that had a shred of competance
go ahead
Frank Probst @ 21
Ah, but whither Nancy Grace?
Balrog @ 20
went to the Angels/Oakland game yesterday (and endless, boring affair).. I’d say the Twins have a good shot – Oakland sucked yesterday. They won but barely and we were playing a bunch of AAA kids (the D team). So, please! BEAT OAKLAND!
Drudge’s defense of the indefensible is about the most wretched thing I’ve seem so far.
I learned from wikipedia tonight that lice are also known as “fly babies”. So if Foley is (to use my wife’s term) the “louse in the House”, then “fly babies” would apply to Hastert, Boehner, Shimkus, et al who were more concerned about an election than the safety of a bunch of high school juniors entrusted to their care.
WASHINGTON TIMES ON TUESDAY WILL CALL FOR SPEAKER HASTERT’S RESIGNATION, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE… DEVELOPING… Editorial titled: ‘Resign, Mr. Speaker’: ‘House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once… Mr. Hastert has forfeited the confidence of the public and his party, and he cannot preside over the necessary coming investigation, an investigation that must examine his own inept performance’… — Washington Times, October 3, 2006..

>I’ll never understand why any self-respecting person would be a Republican.
Here is a moving post today at DKos, from a former Republican (excerpt):
It’s over. I’ve had it. They must go. All of them. Every single one. There must be a message sent across the nation, just like there was one sent in 1994. I will not vote for anyone with an (R) beside them.
I will meet you all again in 2008. Maybe by then we can debate real Conservative/Liberal issues. But for now we must unite. We must unite because our country is in trouble. Get them out. Now. All of them.
Good Luck.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..222234/787
If you had told me 2006 would be the year I applauded John Dean, agreed with Bay Buchanan, and congratulated the Washington Times on its editorial courage, I would have said you were crazy.
But this year was that year.
Wow.
TRex, that was so sweet of you.
I BET woodward would do a book salon for us at firedog
we will be gentle
now how to we get the U.N. to monitor our election?
I loved your note on Nancy Grace last night but got here to late to compliment ‘ya, TRex. Great post tonight as well. I’ll tell ‘ya though, the luckiest man alive was Nancy’s fiance. Jeebus, I can’t imagine what living with her would be like. Scary, scary lady.
Hastert is toast, it’s all unwinding all at once and even the corporate media won’t be able to play defense for the Regressives for long, pedophilia is a no-go for EVERYONE, except the few sick fucks who do it. (I don’t believe that all of his victims were over 16 at all, but we’ll have to wait for confirmation on that.)
Raoul
me to me @ 30
Ha, I’d eat my hat if he accepted such an invitation!
You know, even Aravosis hasn’t touched on the real reason the GOP is so screwed on this. They’ve spent the last 10 years demonizing gays as sexual predators, when they knew it was total bullshit. Now they’ve got a man that everyone knew was gay, and they’re stuck claiming that they had no idea he was a sexual predator. Their base isn’t going to buy it, even if it were completely true. Bay Buchanan summed it up quite nicely: If you knew he was gay, you should’ve known you couldn’t have him around kids. Denny Hastert is stuck, because he can’t just say, “Look, just because he’s gay doesn’t mean he’s a pedophile.”
Now Colbert is on and says the whole thing is HIS fault.
If there had been a smiley I could use on that post, I would have.
TRex – great piece.
I still say there have to be a lot of furious Republican parents (many of whom are likely to be large donors) who entrusted their sons & daughters to the prestigious Congressional Page program. Not only do they find out that a known predator was allowed to be involved in the program – their kids are now being slammed by their own party for provoking Foley to abuse and sexual harrass them.
I wonder if these angry parents are behind any of the conservative calls for Hastert’s resignation?
This Foley thing is so typical. It yet another example why it is so dangerous to deny ones natural sexual orientation. REPRESSION causes crazy behavior. The leadership has known about this for five years and did nothing. Fuck, he’s a FLORIDA REPBULICAN. Hell, Bush probably owes him something for 2000 or something.
Authoritarian followers, social dominators and throw in some self rightous religious indignation and you get the modern Republican party.
bdu @ 34
he’s a whore, if we jane asks, and tells him the traffic, he’s coming
TeddySanFran @ 29
woodward is coming, give him the numbers, he’s here
I don’t mind the Repugs singing this. I just can’t handle the falsetto.
Mark Foley had a new ad, which came out just a few days before the…creepiness…was revealed:
Narrator: “The difference for Congress is clear. Tim Mahoney’s record? A nasty, negative, dishonest campaign and questionable business decisions. Mark Foley? A record of helping Florida, fighting for lower taxes for families, protecting missing and exploited children, protecting our Everglades and taking on the Bush Administration to improve veterans’ health care. Congressman Mark Foley: a proven leader with a record we can be proud of. Mark Foley – our congressman.”
Mark Foley: “I’m Mark Foley and I approved this message.”
And…not making this up…it shows him at a Boys and Girls Club. Really. What’s interesting is that even Foley thought Bush was toxic, and was distancing himself.
Love the title of the post… could also use:
“Bring down the government, they don’t, they don’t speak for us”
Talk about denial — Woodward is denying (via the little bit of Larry King interview I saw) that he ‘praised’ Bush in his other 2 books. He just reported, or repeated, or whatever his excuse was for his fawning of bush.
Woodward is now remaking his reputation. Are we buying his shit, even when he comes bearing gifts? I say take the gifts and slam the door. I am not in a friendly mood tonight. Sorry. Will go to corner and meditate…

Definitive summary of House Page Program:
http://www.senate.gov/referenc…..98-758.pdf
There are 72 House pages, 48 of whom were selected by Republicans and 24 by Democrats. The House page program is administered by the Office of the Clerk and supervised by the House Page Board, chaired by Representative John Shimkus (R-IL). Members of the Page Board include Representatives Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Dale Kildee (D-MI), as well as the Clerk and the Sergeant at Arms of the House.

You’ve got to remember that a “lack of memory” is one of the highest Repug qualifications for office.
You do remember that don’t you?

You do remember!
OMG, what a relief! We could never believe it of you! *g*

I didn’t know you were three feet tall and had hairy feet.
Okay — what’s the strategy for the inevitable muddying of the waters that’s sure to come? They’re already casting around for an effective way to drag the Dems into this as well and keep it from being perceived as a Republican scandal. How do Dems rise above this?
Is it by pledging that Dems will take quick and severe action if any Dem names should surface — without making this a witch hunt — and not cover them up like the Repubs? Is it by pressing harder for investigations, come what may?
What’s the strategy here, because they’re sure to try and splatter as much mud as possible, and fast. Get on it, heroes.
GrandmaJ @ 43
I’m with you, Grandma J. Sure, Bobby Kneepads, you can come march with us now, but go to the back of the line. I want to be surrounded by the people who have been fighting this administration since the beginning, not some former blower of smoke up the Imperial President’s arsehole.

cosmo @ 57
At least adultery isn’t a crime. (Whether it’s a disgusting form of sexual predation is, of course, dependent on circumstances.)
I wonder how well Henry Hyde knows Mark Foley?
mercury @ 53
Dems should rebut the lies (e.g. the Page Board investigated this) but otherwise stay out of the way. There will be more and more pages coming forward, and they’re all going to be the children of Republicans. Let Hastert and his cronies take all of the rope that they need. Their base isn’t going to put up with this, much less the swing voters.
It sounds like the Drudge is projecting his own willingness to lick up to Republican Power Daddies. He can’t imagine any other motivation. He can’t imagine innocence or simple decency. I wonder why he can’t?
AZ Matt @ 58
How about “Why Republican Ideology Is For Shitheads?”
EvilDrPuma @ 59
Are you asking in the Bibical sense?
Glorfindel @ 61
Because he’s a Republican talking head. Does any of them not think everybody else operates according to his rules?
I have to honest, I was schocked when I found out that there were Log Cabin Republicans. In my younger, naive days, I just thought how can any gay or lesbians be Republcian.
I was a board member for a gay professional group for while and I had a lot of interaction with gay and lesbian Republicians. For some it was about tax and business issues only, rights had nothing to do with it. For others it was the tax issues and they felt they could change the party from the inside, and were committed to doing so.
I never quite understood their rational, but at least they were out and had no problem admiting it.
cosmo @ 56
Well, at least his mistress is of age.

No, I’d rather not have the answer to that question. Besides, Foley likes his wine freshly squeezed.

Howie Klein had Foley’s number a year ago. He predicted he had the psychological profile to be found in the men’s room with an under-age boy. Howie Klein is the best, the effort he puts in supporting progressive candidates is amazing.
I would marry him also, except GF would kill me.
TRex @ 54
Frankly, I’ve been ignoring him. He’s still got a hell of a long way to go to get to redemption, in my book. And I’m not even willing to give him credit for the “scoops” in his book. I think Tenet has decided that his Medal of Failure wasn’t enough for him, and now he’s trying to get his version of events out. If Woodward hadn’t written this, Tenet would’ve just found someone else.
Heading home.
See you kids in a bit.
The republicans have been grooming their beltway base as homophobic prudes for decades. They ain’t gonna spin their way out of this nosireebob…

plenty of good company for ya here in the corner – you like your popcorn with or without butter ?
and although the Dems can indeed keep quiet on this – Drudge provides the likes of Henry Waxman to remind everyone that this is typical Repug behavior – recalling that hideous Abramoff toady Rep last week who smeared the Marianna Islands sex slave – jes sayin’
TR @ 37
There’s always this: :)
The reason they didn’t tell Shelley Moore Capito (R-WVa, GOP member of the Page School) is because they knew she’d tell Grandma Minority Leader, my congresswoman. There’s no way a woman would have allowed this to proceed the way these men ran it, and I bet Capito would’ve sought Pelosi’s assistance immediately.
Shimkus and Clerk Jeff knew that and kept it from Shelley. Oh, and they didn’t tell the Democratic member either, but that was probably a given.
“Besides, Foley likes his wine freshly squeezed.”
Ha! Not so. I think he likes old, fine wine as well. But I will not pursue that one unless I get an “okay”.
TRex @ 77
How did Drudge wring a deal like that out of ‘em?
If Howie’s got Matt’s number, how is TRex gonna steal him away? T, I hope you got something better than that dorky hat!

Some of the comments on this kos thread are most thought-provoking. How do we treat people who are just now seeing the truth? With kindness I hope. They, especially the men, are in a world of hurt and shame that what they have believed in is a bunch of lies.
Rumors in DC that Foley is only the tip of the iceberg, pedophile-wise.
Kirk-
“does this “okay” suffice?” Not unless you were hit on by Foley in the House cloakroom. Alas. I need an okay from my source. (Well, I don’t, but I would feel better if I had an okay.)
NYTimes, and others:
Representative John Shimkus, Republican of Illinois, and the House clerk, Jeff Trandahl, instructed Mr. Foley to break off any contact with the former page. At the time, Republicans did not purse the matter further, considering the case closed. link
Here’s what stinks to me… Shimkus and Trandahl are two of the five members of the House Page Board. If this is a matter relating to a page and a member of congress, this would by any measure be considered Official Business. Therefore, there must be a proceedure to document the incident and related communications.
The fact that a warning was given to Foley, but NOT documented (and in fact was actively concealed from the other Board members) is all the damning evidence I need.
I know the Trex evening is generally snark but at times it is good to cleanse the soul. My offering here are two parts from John F.Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, Friday, January 20, 1961
“We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.”
“In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility—I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it—and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”
He inspired me many years later to join the Peace Corps. I think for many of us he will continue to have effect.

what does Chuck Schumer have to do with this? Because he’s running the Dem Senate ops?
I’ve said this a couple of times, but it bears repeating:
Melanie Sloan, the Executive Director of CREW saw many of the IMs/email back in July. She is a former federal prosecutor with experience in sex crimes.
She turned them over to the FBI about 2 1/2 months ago.
The FBI announced they were starting an investigation Sunday.
2 1/2 months later.
Just keep that small fact in mind when discussing this with people. I think there’s cover-up all through the Republican regime, not just in the House.

I had hoped Melanie would be on Countdown tonight. Is she waiting for another day to make this point about the sluggishness of the FBI, or has she moved up the food chain beyond Olbermann? I like her appearances with Keith. Hope he gives her the opportunity to expand on this part of the story; being a former federal prosecutor, she knew her reporting duty was clear long ago. And acted on it.
Patrick- I would be excited too, if I knew who The Low Lows were. Sorry, I am such a geek.

October Surprise Trifecta
egregious @ 123
hi egregious -
i’ve blabbed on the lake way too much the last few days, so i’m looking for a big ‘ol lily pad to curl up and enjoy this autumn sun and just listen….
but i gotta speak out:
You are so right, and your message of kindness is so wonderful.
I wanna go to bed, so I’ll attempt to quickly talk about that trivial issue of: economic class.
[NOTE: I’m not one of the “alphabet soup” flavors of authoritarian communism. RCP. PCP. Whaddever. I’m not a communist/socialist/whateverist.]
Here’s my short take: Millions of people will see through the GOP this week.
In the weeks to come, the GOP will evert – the sheer putrefaction of it all will push the goopers’ corrupt gangrenous innards out past their flaccid PR sphincters.
Tens of millions will be so grossed out and ashamed they’ll drop gooper identity.
I so hope progressives can welcome revolted (not “ing”) goopers.
We can use the projection defense (the ‘poopy’ is someone else’s, not mine.)
I’m hoping folks can find a way to help gooper followers change cultural identity by projecting blame outwards.
Like on to the schoolkid-molesting perverts who run the GOP and have betrayed loyal supporters.
Who sold out their communities, hollowed out their jobs, and sent their kids to bleed and die.
Or lured their kids to kneel and sigh.
So many folks – most folks – in the US don’t have access to major alternative news sources or critiques, and hence don’t have a sense of the world outside of CNN/FOX/MSN filters.
With so few mass media outlets (with honorable execptions like Pacifica/Daily/Colbert) giving alternative frameworks, I really do believe economic class has a lot to do with the opportunity to have the disposable ime income to seek non-MSM views.
ANd I believe folks who are well-off have a lot more opporunity to do the media parsing, ’cause they don’t have to spend as much time working and doing.
So this is a long-winded way of hoping that viewers who were trapped in MSM propaganda for the GOP but now see beyond it may be given a shame-shedding way of changing their identity to “progressive”.
I’m hoping progressives build a broad tent that welcomes those who despise and were deceived by child molesters, but keeps out the molesters and their helpers.
Now who would turn down that invitation?
AZ Matt @ 146

I have seen a couple of those. I have to admit that my background was in soul, R&B, blues and punk rock. (One of these things is not like the other….)
No offense intended, but seeing a guy like Dave Weckl play 900 miles per hour around the kit just didn’t get me wound up.
I learned MOST of what I know as a drummer while playing live, particularly in the disdain on the faces of some of the older gentlemen I played with in some of those blues bands. They let me know when I hit a bad note, let me tell you.
Didn’t you tell me you’re from Indiana? My wife is from there.
rat bastahd >”Has anyone posted these state-by-state Rasmussen results…”
Quite the “messy” URL it is; those spaces “break” things
Try this
“Let everyone sweep in front of his own door, and the whole world will be clean.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
A spokesman for Rep. Mark Foley announced Foley has checked into an alcohol rehab clinic in Florida. The Congressman says, “I have a problem with 18-year-old Scotch and 16-year-old boys.”–Conan O’Brian tonight.
OT, but I am heading to sleep and it my last chance. i posted this earlier, but I am thinking of going down to grand Central station tomorrow to watch Lieberman’s photo op. Any NYers wanna join?
Sorry can’t get quotes to work, this is from NYTimes Empire Zone:
We hear Senator Joe Lieberman and former New York City Mayor Ed Koch will appear together at Grand Central tomorrow from 4 to 5 p.m. to shake hands with Connecuticut commuters on their way home.
Mr. Koch, a Democrat friendly with Republicans, has been a strong supporter of Mr. Lieberman, a Democrat friendly with Republicans, in the latter’s battle for bipartisan support in his independent race for re-election against the Democratic Party’s nominee, Ned Lamont.
Why must good news for Democrats be such f*cking tragedies? I wish we could do good shit, instead of waiting for train wrecks on the other side.
Seriously. Maybe Jennifer Nix is sighted.
It’s late, and I couldn’t sleep. SO I show up here. And the gang is all active, mixing it up, spitting out the best comments.
So I wonder this: what about that defense contractor and the limos and the Watergate Hotel and the sex workers who weren’t women?
I’m too bleary eyed to go find all this stuff. But I am sure you regulars remember.
IT seems to me that the K Street project had to have been held together with more than just money and power, but the perquisites of money and power: sex and drugs.
Then the folks who have cash to purchase a congressman don’t just have to rent him, but can purchase him with a little black mail. If some company can get favorable regulations, legislation and contracts through their favorite congressman, why wouldn’t they want him to have a few peccadilloes to seal the deal for life?
So maybe what we’re seeing is not just lack of vigilance on the part of Hastert, or Reynold’s fear of losing a seat, but one loose piece of yarn in a big comfy sweater that will soon come unraveled.
Or not, given the number of times I have hoped for it. The MSM may not be up for the unveiling.

Last Thursday I attended an event of the ACLU of Ohio, featuring speakers from Equality Ohio. I wrote just a bit about it here, but haven’t had a chance to write up much of it until now. I was particulary interested to hear Adam Leddy of Equality Ohio describe the experience of attending a service at Rod Parsley’s World Harvest Church. He recomended, as you’ll see at the end of his remarks, that we go and experience it for ourselves. But I don’t imagine that I’m going to do that. Neither are most of you, I imagine. So I thought you might appreciate whatever insights Adam’s description can offer.

Sounds like it’s a great set. Drum set prices have come down considerably lately. I don’t know why that is, but you can pick up a set of NICE Gretsch drums for $599 now. Nicer kits run a little more, then add cymbals and stands, though, and sounds like you got right into the ballpark with a good kit.
Truth be told, I buy all mine used, because after playing for (cough cough) 28 years, I know EXACTLY what I am looking for, and what to watch out for.

Nope. No Hoosier in these veins. Well, the reason I ask is cuz I work in the film/video world, and tomorrow I’m talking to another drummer, who like Charlie, is a great meat n potatoes drummer, Bun E Carlos. I’m trying to get a better sense of what drummers want to see in a video, especially not a wank-fest like a Weckl video. Any thoughts, or is this too obscure for this late hour?

Kos diary up on the Rice/Tenet/Black meeting.
Apparently, despites Ashcroft’s earlier today protestations that he knew nothing about nothing, there was a briefing for Ashcroft and Rumsfeld.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/10/3/04418/8102
Ashcroft and Gonzales deserve something for what they have done to damage the credibility of the whole of the DOJ in a way that won’t bounce back anytime soon.
Apparently after the meeting,Ashcroft started flying private chartered flights too – because of a “threat assessment.”
Nice how he let everyone else, including moms travelling with babies and small children, in on that “threat assessment.”
Ben Veniste is fessing up that the 9/11 commission was told (although maybe not the true details of the meeting – maybe some folks downplayed and fibbed??) but as to why it was left out of the Report, he is gallantly referring all questions back to 9/11 commission investigator (and longtime Rice friend and co-Author) Zelikow.
Rumsfeld? Guess we’ll have to wait a day or so for that.
bonkers @ 174
Man, that guy is a great drummer….
here are two things no one ever talks to young drummers about:
1. tuning. Take five minutes to show the kids how to get Bun’s GREAT tone. Man, his drums sound great.
2. How to play behind the beat. This is tricky, but George Clinton once did this thing on a History of Rock and Roll thing I saw once, where he held his thumb and forefinger up and said “The beat isn’t tiny, like the period at the end of a sentence. It’s a b i g space in time. Now, here’s the front of the beat and here’s the back. You have to hit it way back here, where you’re almost falling off of the back of it.” It was beautiful and it made so much sense. I tell young drummers that all the time.
Also, a note about how to tone down the highhat when the singer is singing, how to play dynamically into the chorus… this is all stuff that working drummers need to know.
Pretty exciting- where are you guys shooting this?
I’ve always had a weird fascination with the movie Convoy. Not sure why…I was pretty young when it came out, so probably just liked the trucks, and the music was cool.
Hastert had no duty to investigate the “overly friendly” emails. Congress works through its committees. Hastert had a duty to refer the matter to the proper committee.
Seems we have a combination or agreement, express or implied, among, as a minimum, Alexander, Reynolds, Hastert and Boehner, to keep the issue from the proper committee. That is a common law conspiracy.

I was heartened to hear John King on CNN say that the Foley coverup (which is what the CNN graphic called it, iirc) had “legs.” That means, I think, that there’s a reason for the MSM to cover it tomorrow.
Needing amplification are
1. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WVa, GOP Page School Board member) outta the loop completely. She needs to be asked, “what would you have done had you known last year?” and “why do you think they didn’t tell you?”
2. Democratic pages not warned, or “told” or “alerted” or whatever word describes the sentence, “Hey, GOP pages, look out for perv Foley!”
3. Did Laura Bush campaign for Reynolds as planned today? She needs to be asked if she raised the issue with Reynolds, if so.
4. Who is running the new 1-800-PAGE-PREDATION hotline announced yesterday by the GOP leadership? How are its employees vetted?
5. What’s up with the delay in the FBI investigation, since Melanie CREW turned over all the communications 10 weeks ago?
Are there other questions needing focus tomorrow? Oh, yeah, has all the Foley cash to GOP candidates been turned over to agencies helping preyed-on kids?
You know? I don’t really feel satisfied yet. I haven’t been quite mean enough to Drudge, I think.

Seems like I read somewhere on some important looking piece of paper the notion of “Equal Protection”.
Does this not apply in the halls of the legislative branch, some sort of “Kings X” or something?
Alison @ 172: Do you have a link about that?
Oilfieldguy @ 237
I know! I hate when that happens to me! How do I make it stop?
(Tell me tomorrow, though.)
The Foley story has the most traction of any event in the US House since the GOP swept in with their Contract scam. I’ve spoken with dozens of conservatives and evangelicals yesterday and today. Not one of those who has been paying attention to this sad story as it deepens remains moored to her or his previous political convictions. Not one. Several listened to my pitch for progressive values ardently. Additionally, they are more fed up with the war and crony corruption than ever.
This has never happened to me before.
LindyH @ 240
Who you callin’ Puple? Oh yer tired, Okay.

Your grip.
From the NYT’s editoral for Oct.3rd.:
“History suggests that once a political party achieves sweeping power, it will only be a matter of time before the power becomes the entire point. Policy, ideology, ethics all gradually fall away, replaced by a political machine that exists to win elections and dispense the goodies that come as a result. The only surprise in Washington now is that the Congressional Republicans managed to reach that point of decayed purpose so thoroughly, so fast.”
And Trex, or moderator, your italics tag is on.

Here’s the text:
Congressional sources told WMR that Hastert, while working from 1964 to 1980 as a popular history/government teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School, in Yorkville, Illinois — a suburb of Chicago — was the subject of persistent rumors about inappropriate contact with male members of his high school wrestling team. The culture of the times usually resulted in such alleged behavior being covered up by public and parochial school authorities. However, the rumors were enough for his Yorkville constituency to reject him when he ran for an open seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1980. However, Hastert lucked out when another sitting Republican House member who represented the three-seat district had a stroke and declined to run for re-election. The GOP machine bosses selected Hastert as the replacement candidate.
Don’t get too excited about Bay Buchanan. Like her brother Pat, she loathes gays with a passion, a passion far stronger than her loyalty to the Republicans. Her kind would like to turn this thing into an attack on all gays, and they’d be happy to bash the Republican leadership, not so much for not protecting the pages, but for tolerating gay Republicans (she makes no distinction between those who would prey on teenagers and those who want a consensual relationship with a member of the same sex). She’d like a purge.
As Aravosis points out, though, the Buchanans don’t hate gays enough to prevent them from running Pat’s Presidential campaign.
Oh m’gawd ..Matt Drudge is a refaglican? Just cheneyng unbelievable.

Or is it Condi Rice’s communications director looking for the notes to her next question and answer session with the press?

Joe Buck @ 276
I’m not sure what you mean by “purge.” Of gays from publc life, like the Nazis did with gays and Jews in 1933 and 1934?
It seems that the “Conventioal Wisdom” is that this Repug Predatorgate thing has “legs” to quote such luminaries of the punditocracy as David Gergen tonite on CNN.
And as much as I have enjoyed this in a purely partisan way, I gotta say that upon reflection, I do wonder if those “legs” will carry this story much further.
Unless the story can continue to deliver additional verifiable Repug contretemps on this travesty, the current crop of “deer-in-the-headlights” scuzzballs may weather this storm.
The stuff I’d be looking for over the course of the next day or two is:
1. Serious Fundy-base uproar and more importantly, threats of punitive action (i.e. not voting).
2. Additional Pages come forward.
3. Additional “prior knowledge” admissions from more Repug congresscritters.
4. Smoking gun evidence of “prior knowledge” on the part of current Repug leadership targets.
If I were in sitting in on the “kitchen-cabinet” meetings of the Repug leadership, I’d be probably hearing that though we caught a few bullets, none were as yet fatal and the firing seems to be dwindling.
Might cost Denny Hastert his leadership post, and at a stretch, might even cost him his re-election bid.
My basic point is that for this fire to keep burning, there has got to be more fuel to feed it.
What say ya’ll?
And remember, no brickbats please! Marshmellows however are most welcome! *g*

Close Up Foundation
44 Canal Center Plaza
Alexandria, VA 22314-1592
To Whom it may concern:
Our son is scheduled to attend your Washington DC program in the spring of 2007. As a family we had been looking forward to his participation in this civics program. We have made our first payment to the program. However, we are deeply disturbed with the news that the GOP leadership of the House of Representatives appears to be engaged in the cover-up of a pedophilia ring within their ranks.
At first glance, your ten rules for students participating in Close Up appear to be rational and adequate. But, in light of the revelations coming out about criminal activity in the highest ranks of the current House leadership, I am concerned about rule No. 6. Specifically, I need your reassurance in writing that no Close Up staff member will direct our son to spend any time with any member of the GOP House leadership, supervised or otherwise.
1. At no time are male students allowed to visit female students’ rooms and vice versa. (Close Up defines “room” as the threshold of the door.)
2. Students are forbidden to possess and/or use alcoholic beverages.
3. Students are forbidden to possess and/or use drugs other than those prescribed for them by a doctor.
4. Students are forbidden to possess and/or use firearms or weapons of any kind.
5. Students are forbidden to abuse or deface facilities and to abuse, deface, or steal property.
6. Students will cooperate with the Close Up staff at all times.
7. Students are prohibited from smoking while on the program.
8. Students are assigned to rooms and workshop groups with students whose backgrounds may be quite different from their own. These assignments are strictly enforced. Students who are unable or unwilling to comply cooperatively with these assignments are subject to dismissal.
9. Students will respect the diversity of opinions expressed by other students and speakers.
10. Non–Close Up participants are forbidden from entering student rooms without prior consent from Close Up staff. This prohibition includes family members and is for the purpose of protecting students and their property.
Sincerely Yours,
[ET’s name redacted by DHS]

Joke from my (briefly Repub) baby brother, the law professor:
Journalist, going to report on the local Republican caucus, sees a sign in the pet shop next door: “Republican puppies for adoption.”
Two weeks later, the journalist comes back for the local Democratic primary and sees the same puppies under a new sign: “Democratic puppies for adoption.”
So he goes into the pet shop and asks, “Weren’t you offering these little dogs as Republicans a mere two weeks ago?”
“Yes,” admits the pet-shop proprietor, “but since then, their eyes have opened.”

From todays WaPo After Foley, New Fears For the GOP: Some Say Party Could Lose House and Senate
OT, Imus just called for Hastert’s resignation. He didn’t even mention the Washington Times editorial.
Awfully quiet this morning… got the coffee on.
FYI, the Miami Herald has a front-page story this morning about the GOP replacement candidate for Foley.
TRex,
dunno if you come back and read the ends of the comments after you check out for the night, but great work, again.
I got into a big political argument with a gay friend of mine (in late 40s still closeted to his parents and hopelessly Republican on ‘values’ basis due to Xtian upbringing). When I challenged him about how he could support a party which crusades against everything he is, not his beliefs about taxes or whatever, he responded with “If I left the party based on that I would be allowing a single issue to determine my politics.”
A ’single issue’?! His identity, his ambitions, his hopes, his sense of family, his civil rights, his very freedom to love without sense or reason – that is a ’single issue.’ Sigh, what a lost cause.

Old Sow, imm, and several others are usually here; scheduling issues, I guess.
Yep, figured as much. No worries, just an observation…
Guess I’m still in the camp that thinks there’s still something up the GOP’s sleeve, that this celebration of the GOP implosion is still premature. I also wish that the apparent new mood swing in the electorate wasn’t due to something child-related, but rather the administrative and financial incompetance that most of us here have known for years — it makes it almost impossible to enjoy the moment.
Bob Schieffer on Imus this AM is ABSOLUTELY ripping Hastert and the GOP a new one, “worst of the worst,”….”if I were Mr. Hastert, I would be making a lot of phone calls, if I wanted to stay,”…. incumbent protection racket,” or words to that effect.
FishGuyDave,
There’s always still something up the GOP’s sleeve. Not saying that they were prepared for this to come out now or that they will be capable of countering it, but they always have multiple tricks/surprises planned, and we haven’t really seen much yet, so it stands to reason…
BQ, thanks for those cheery thoughts… *g*
Well Good Morning from Eastern Maine, where we experienced what is now officially labeled a 3.4 earthquake at about 8pm last night. (original word was 4.2 but let me tell you at a 3.4 IS noticeable) My thoughts were scrambled. It felt like an explosion and then the most amazing deep rumble that went on for about 4-5 seconds. Did I think about something other than the natural world readjusting itself? You bet. Have I had enough of living in a time when that even crosses my mind? You betcha.
So in this lovely autumnal time, I’ll press through the big buzz of politics and war and all that encompasses, to ask for blessings for the people of this planet, and for peace and justice to come into an ascendancy throughout and for our lives to regain the freshness of the early morning skies here in paradise.
And Hi All!! I’m happy to join you for coffee and a morning chat. I woke up having so HAD ENOUGH I forgot my manners. So anything new going on? *g*
FishGuyDave,
meant to add that I think that the anger involved in this scandal can be turned to other aspects where they have turned a blind eye to abuses.
The public will be much less likely to buy the ‘trust us to do the right thing’ line with ‘less important’ stuff like war profiteering, Executive Branch oversight, ethics investigations, etc, etc, when they can’t be trusted to do the most basic things to watch out for kids who can barely drive. The public will be more willing to support calls for investigations of other things, since it is obvious that the pugs can’t be trusted to pay attention to kids who are often those of their biggest supporters.
This is a bumper sticker bonanza for Dems.
There’s a thousand variations, depending on the issue.
FishGuyDave,
did my added thoughts help? *g*

Who knows? Maybe the Fourth Estate is finally waking from it’s long slumber… or not. *g*

From a Buffalo blog, Buffalo Geek Reynolds: “I took it to my Supervisor”
Bold is mine.
“I took it to my supervisor,” sounds like language crafted by an employment attorney wrt sexual harrassment. For example, Hastert failed to guarantee a safe workplace environment, by allowing someone he supervised, Foley, to prey on boys that Foley supervised.
Reynold’s is apparently alleging negligence by Hastert wrt to his supervisory responsibilities. I think what is pissing people off about this is that it sounds like Reynold’s is more concerned about his legal jeapordy. In cases like this, voters want RESULTS. They don’t want Congressman to be pursing pages. If you can’t deliver on something that
fuckingobvious you’re obviously notfuckingqualified to serve in Congresspunaise @ 284
Aaaaargh! I’ve MISSED you, punnaise!
Thank you TRex for smacking Drudge around.
When I was 14 a family member tried to molest me. I don’t know what came over me,but my first reaction was anger, which scared the guy to death. At that age I was shy, pretty meek, but something inside me snapped. At the time, this man was in his 60’s and he was a big guy, well over 6 ft tall and at least 300 lbs. I was barely 5 ft tall and 100 lbs. And he was scared shitless of me because his dirty little secret was out. My only regret is not telling someone who would listen because I’m sure he didn’t stop with me. I carry guilt for that to this day ,over 30 yrs later.
His excuse? I led him on by wearing shorts. In the Summertime. With temps in the 90’s. I looked too good for him to resist. This bullshit excuse messed with my head for years.
Someone needs to dig into Drudge’s issues, anyone who would say these kids had it coming should be suspect as this is THE textbook classic predator’s excuse for what they do.
In fact TRex,going back and re-reading your post, you were too nice to this slimeball. When I read about this sick bastard’s comments yesterday it made me vomit and brought back so many awful memories. I had no one to go to with this,my parents were useless and would have blamed me too. I carried so much shame, guilt and anger over this incident for so many years,no child should have to endure that. Ever.
If I ever have the misfortune of seeing Drudge in person,I’ll probably end up in jail for assault.
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD FOR EXPLOITED CHILDREN
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD FOR EXPLOITED CHILDREN
Now, that`s at the first place disgusting and morally perversive.
The perversions of power, (what is) the might sifting and wavering thru the lousy asses of the republican party, show effects of degeneration.
The glibbering gems of Foleys perverted calls for attitude towards children is a new peak in the Bush era approach towards human mankind.
The democratic crediblity gained in six elections misused for such an infamous and heinous offense comes close to 911 when Bush couldnt read memos. The damage done to democracy wont be equalized by tormenting the Geneva conventions. Especially the morale of this story also doesnt improve thru this pityful excuse circus the Republican party is just presenting.
Seriously, Dredge’s performance yesterday was like a cry for help.
Because they have such a difficult time controlling their impulses Predators often blame their urges on the victim. The victim, whether an 8 year old or a 16/17 year old, is seen as being seductive and “asking for it”
If we didn’t think Drudge was sick before, we now have confirmation on video. Right wing – you can have him.
John Casper @ 339
John Casper,
It seems to me that that is the way they are trying to frame the issue, one of sexual harassment (supervisory relationships, etc., which Foley made sure the pages were removed from before amping up his schtick), rather than one of predatory behavior, which is an entirely different discussion.
I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this hadn’t been discussed long ago, along with ‘what to tell the pages.’ Basically, the odds are excellent that they gave him a green light as long as he didn’t do anything which rose to the level of sexual harassment of a current page. That would be the point where they would see any possible duty to report on their part to kick in, and it would appeal to them as a bright line to stake, claiming that “it never occurred to them” that their duty might be otherwise.
They could rationalize Foley’s preying on former pages by virtue of the “various states have various laws” dodge, ignoring the fact that he was using his position to gain access, groom, select victims, gain personal information, and put him in a position of immeasurable power over the page.
What f*cked them up was the massive public awareness of how insidious these predators are. I have been kvetching about the constant overkill of NBC To Catch a Predator ’specials’ but GawdAmighty, I luv ‘em to death for educating the public to the point that they don’t buy Denny’s “I dint see nuthin’ wrong in some 54 yr old guy wanting a picture of a fifteen year old”
Denny must not watch much TeeVee, huh?
It will take me way too long to watch three videos (dial up) which is the money shot?
Good morning FDL. I’ve got the coffee brewing here. And am still trying to find words for my absolute disgust with the current crop of Republicans.
Simple Democrat bumper sticker: Remember what happened the last time you voted Republican?
FUCKED UP PHOTO OP from Congressman Reynolds (R-NY)
In the three YOUTUBES in my comment above, Reynolds wants that photo op of all the children and their parents surrounding him. That is classic Rove. I gotta think that photo op is going to backfire with him. These guys have no idea of the microscope that this particular issue has them under. As Bob Schieffer opined this AM on IMUS, both the far left and far right are UNITED on this, GOP fucked-up.
Now I have to go right a thank you email to the Moonie owned Washington Times, (something I never dreamed I’d ever do) for calling for calling for Hastert’s resignation.

Thanks BQ.
I’m sorry to say the audio quality of the YOUTUBES is not very good.
I found nothing in the first one of much value, but I was rushing through it and easily could have missed something. I think it’s the second one where you hear Reynolds say, “I told my supervisor.” It sounds, however, as though Reynolds did not take it seriously enough to DOCUMENT it. AFAIK, it’s all verbal between Hastert and him.
I saw little that jumped out at me in the third YOUTUBE, but again, it’s very possible I missed something.

GrandmaJ @ 347
I’m with you, he’s pond scum. Just seeing his name in print puts my teeth on edge; a picture and my stomach does a slow forward roll. I’m surprised he didn’t attack the kid ABC interviewed from the Page Alumni Assn as being ‘jealous’ that Foley didn’t pick him. What a rat-bastard waste of skin.
Morning Folks,
Foggy Vermont checking in.
Old Sow, I’m sorry to hear of your experience. And I’m really sorry there was no adult to confide in at the time. I also have experience of this – not myself but someone I love, and I think one thing that is key is to have someone who will listen and believe you. How horrible for victims of pedophiles who tell a parent only to have them say “Uncle Ernie loves you dear, he would never hurt you” or some variation.
Which is why, through all of this, I feel rage at these scum; and sorrow for the poor kids, and their families, depending on how supportive they are.
John C.
Thanks, I’ll try to listen to all if they’re not too long. This is such BS anyway. Who wouldn’t ask the immediate follow-up “What to you mean by ‘overly-friendly’?” Only someone who a) already knows the answer, b) doesn’t want to know the answer or c) both.
They did have a employer-employee relationship with the pages, so sexual harassment would be an issue (and I’m sure they put extra rules in place after 1983), so why not ask the question to make sure there was no problem (one can harass by e-mail, why stake your career on an aide’s interpretation)?
Old Sow,
I’ve internalized similar experiences for years myself. That slow-forward roll of the stomach is what I feel every time I have to see that pos.
I was particularly angry here about the ‘warning’ given the Republican pages “he’s just a bit odd – nothing to worry about.” Essentially telling these kids that if Foley made them feel creepy it was something they should shrug off – ignore that inner voice, the page supervisor said he was cool. Let him survey the herd without triggering fear.
Repugs: Majority more important than Morals.
Mornin’ pups.
Can I just say that the posters and commentors on this site have just done THE most remarkable job in this issue?
Thais may be one of Firedoglakes finest hours (though it’s hard to tell, there are so many fine hours to choose from)
Congratulations and thoanks to you all.
So very, very well done.
No, it’s the Angry Old Broad not the Old Sow who had THAT terrible experience. However, I was molested by a neighbor as a young child, as were other little girls in my neighborhood. We were promised doll clothes, held up into the high shelf of a closet, and fingered (but not penetrated). We were so innocent we didn’t realize what had happened (Guess the doll clothes aren’t here after all, come back and look another day!)until YEARS later when it all fell into place, so I guess it wasn’t that traumatic. It did, however, cause a deep level of mistrust of male adults! Now THIS is a story I’ve never told in so large a forum before. I wish it weren’t so common an experience.
Oh, Sorry, Angry Old Broad, I meant my comment above for you.
And Old Sow, amazing how common this experience is. And how common the reaction NOT TO TELL. For victims of incest, molestation or rape. Don’t tell, meaning: somehow, wasn’t it really your fault?
OS and AOB,
oops.
and not surprised it ended up being true of AOB as well – as you say, way too common.
You know, people are born amoral. It’s our socializing that gives birth to compassion and respect. And that’s why we need to clean house in govt. If being scummy is the norm at the most visible levels of power, that part of human nature is given permission to play out all over. We can certainly all see the depths and breadths of the worst all around us!! Let’s kick *ss and kick the b*stards out of office!!
oops, I did it again (another first, my quoting a Britney Spears lyric)
sorry, I’ll stop
My comment somehow lost in the tubes; but sorry, Angry Old Broad, my last was meant for you.
And Old Sow, it is really troubling how common this experience is. And how common too, the response NOT TO TELL. For victims of rape, incest or molestation. The message is ingrained that somehow, these victims are to blame. As if the crime of being raped or molested is not bad enough, then to have to suffer in silence, with a sense of shame. And how devastating, particularly, for a child.
Good Christ, to have this Drudge person out in front, openly blaming the kids involved in this crime; blaming the victims who are children – I am left speechless over this. But this guy is VILE. He has got to pay for these remarks.
ya know, I think this story may go on and on… did anyone see Brian Ross last night? (I know, we are boycotting ABC, but I tuned in last night). Brian mentioned he is getting a lot of emails about more “members” and their abuses… no names named yet – I think they are waiting to confirm
BQ, relax. No-one’s offended.
Morning gang — fresh thread.
Mary #183 –
They must have read your comment, because they are now in full-scale damage control. Ashcroft specifically.
On the Today Show at 8:48 am EDT, Meredith Viera interviewed Ashcroft, during the fluffy women’s news zone. Anything after 8:00 am is aimed at the soccer mom crowd; you know it’s bad when they think they have to play to this crowd, behind some moving story of a multi-faith women’s kaffee klatsch and before Gene Shalit’s movie review.
Reeks of desperation.
She asks whether Ashcroft got a warning about a terrorist attack in advance of 9/11 from Tenet et al — and Ashcroft claims it would have nice if the AG had gotten the same briefing (believe he’s referring to the kind Rice got).
Ashcroft doesn’t believe the president would knowingly lie to the public.
He also doesn’t believe the Patriot Act is as controversial as people make it — 88 Senators voted for it, after all. Yah. Like they had much of a choice, being told a bunch of lies about sunsetting and harangued with the label “traitor” if they didn’t sign.
Ashcroft believes civil liberties have been secured…
Good f*cking God, Viera follows up his happy horsesh*t about the robing of statues in the DoJ.
I am so embarrassed for her, she only lacked Katie’s little dimpled perky smile as she rolled over.
But I’m even more embarrassed and disgusted that this moron was our attorney general for any length of time. The only constructive, positive thing he did on our dime is recuse himself from the CIA Leak investigation.
Aww BQ,it’s easy to mix people up on the FDL threads, heck, this place moves so fast you’d have to be superhuman to keep up,lol.
But yes, this is far too common, sad to say.
Does anyone know if the GOP has cut funding for things like women’s shelters, programs to help abused children, stuff like that? Seems to me this is part and parcel of the environment that allowed Foley(and he is not the only one,no way would the GOP go this far to cover one fairly low on the big scale congresscritter)that would allow child predators to operate unchecked for so long.
What really disgusts me is that appearantly people have been warning kids in the page program for years about various pervs in Congress. Why in the hell were these people even being ALLOWED to have their jobs while doing this kind of thing? And,do they give the parents of these kids the same warnings? I mean,I knew politics was a sleazy bidness, but if this has been going on for perhaps decades,I have to wonder what sort of environment is there to allow it to happen over and over and over again.
It’s so sad. This page program sounds like a really great thing and now it’s tainted by becoming a pool for child predators to fish around in. Hell,I’d love to go back to high school if I could have my classroom in the Library of Congress. And now these kids will lose faith in public service, which is another crime, even if it’s not legally so.
I’m sure they’ll replace Denny with someone solid and trustworthy.
Someone like THIS DUDE!
