There are certain things in life that one never expects to have to say. Things like, "Another tour de force performance from Charlie Sheen!" or "A vocal performance of exquisite subtlety and restraint from Christina Aguilera". The Mark Foley page-baiting scandal has added another of these improbable phrases to my lexicon and it is possibly the most logic-defying, patently absurd one of all. It is this:
"I sure hope Nancy Grace is all over this story."
See? Ewwwww. I feel a little weird just saying it.
I remember the first time I ever saw Ms Grace on some late night talking head squawk-fest. I can't even remember what the case was, but I was immediately on edge the moment she started talking. I didn't know if it was her adenoidal delivery, her plangent, self-righteous tone, her Crystal Carrington shoulder pads, or the fact that it looked like her hairdresser was trying to sculpt her head into the shape of a potted fern (with highlights!), but I remember thinking, "This woman is a total nightmare!"
So naturally, she's practically got her own network now.
But all that has been looking a little dubious of late, ever since a guest on her show committed suicide after a particularly bruising interview with Grace week before last. People have been asking questions about her journalistic integrity. After all, not ALL defendants can be guilty, can they?
But see, that's been Nancy's calling card ever since she got a job sitting in for Larry King. Since the tragic murder of her fiancé (or as she says "fee-AWN-saaay"), she has been on a one-woman crusade to mend our "broken" criminal justice system by obviating the need for trials, judges, and juries. They're ALL guilty. Just ask her.
No case it too sordid. No victim or perpetrator's feelings are too delicate to be smashed into atoms by Grace's take-no-prisoners interview style. If there is any journalist who can bring the Foley scandal to the public in all its filthy, perverse, creepy, and deeply sleazy glory, it's Nancy.
And frankly, it couldn't be better timed for everyone concerned. Nancy's going to need a bit of career rehab after having a guest shoot herself. We need the Republicans to lose the midterm elections in a spectacular way. The Republicans are running like cockroaches scurrying for cover when you flick the kitchen light on. Come on, Nance!! Time's a-wastin'! We need you to drag those teenage boys into the limelight! Make them talk about how Congressman Foley's advances made them feel! Make them read the emails and IM's he sent them on live television! Bring on the child psychologists! Can we get some of these victims to cry on camera?!
Nancy, darling, this is your moment. This scandal could be for you what Paula Jones was for Ann Coulter, the seedy spectacle that takes you over the hump from somewhat marginal hysterical crank to ubiquitous, omnipresent hysterical crank. Rita Cosby and Greta Van Susteren are good with this sort of thing, but they're just not like you. They just don't have the same snarling, wild-eyed prosecutorial zeal that you do, girl. This is the moment when we need our favorite spunky blond ambulance-chaser more than ever before. It is time for you, Nancy Grace, to answer the call of your country.
But really. If you're going to be all over my television from now to November, I wish we could talk about your hair…

I made that Schadenfreude pie from Whatever blog, still have some left. Here’s a bite for Mark Foley. Nancy, honey, here’s some for you, too.
I’d pay to see Nancy come to work one day after having stuck her finger in a light socket.
Twould be the perfect style for her personality. *g*
Aiiiiieeeee!!!
Who wants to bet Foley’s “blue dress” will be an Abercrombie-Fitch t-shirt?…
Why does she even have a job? ick.

I said it yesterday… I expect this to be Nancy Grace’s reason for being now.
Copied from the last thread… did nobody catch this in MTP? Calling Lil’ Debbie!
OT: I’m still trying to figure out what, if any, object lessons the progessive side of the blogosphere should draw from the Torture Bill debacle. Say that all of this had happened the other way around. The right would have their billion-dollar think tanks working overtime to crucify the left on this bill, and I mean THIS bill — not a word changed.
It’s naive to say, “Why can’t we do that?” We don’t have their access to capital. But we have assets that they surely covet, outstanding blog sites for one. But, for example, blog sites don’t break things down and package them into talking points. Perhaps a system of wikis would be better for that. I’m just trying to think how to take them on more effectively.
How odd…. Not having television, while I’d read lots of quotes and descriptions of Nancy Grace, I’d never seen a picture of her.
I note, TRex, that you picked a charming one of her, one that befits her on-screen persona. :)
Will Nancy Grace dominate this story by virtue of her investigative skills?
I have my doubts.
Another thought: if anybody ever comes up with a photo of Nancy in a compromising position with Cardinal Law, should it be titled “Grace Under Friar?”
Folks, you’d just better hope I never have to use that pun in anger.
EvilDrPuma @ 22

Book salon rocked. But so does the Nancy Grace treatise.
She was born to carry this story straight into the sleaze-loving heart of America where it belongs.
Whazzap firedogs? Can someone spotlight this post to the CNN folks that need to see it, please? Sorry to hit and run…just got back from Pascagoula, MS on a home rehab mission for people/homes devastated by Katrina, and am totally beat and very sad. The insurance companies are screwing the policy holders by stating that damage was due to flood, not wind damage. Ahem. When boats are in trees above the high water mark (15 feet above ground level), it indicates that damage was due to a "wind driven" water event, not a flood. Floods happen with rain and water levels rising due to gravity. Boats don’t end up in trees due to gravity or 20 inches of rain. As a member of the State Farm Mutual Company I say, "Pay these folks!" NOW!!!
This certainly is the perfect Nancy Grace story … she’d be able to do such outrage!
I have forgotten the details but there are a lot of fabrications and exaggerations in Ms Grace’s fiance murder story. But she still is on the TV with a bad show.
Pachacutec @ 25

Digby has a nice quote from Elmer Gantry that I think tells all with regard to Foley and the xtian wackos. “He had in fact, got everything from the church and Sunday School, except, perhaps, any longing whatever for decency and kindness and reason.”
This fits with the south Florida mega-church pastor who said he would still vote for Foley rather than a Democrat.

Grace and Geraldo won’t touch the Foley story, unless he becomes a Dem in the next few days. The Dems will say no, but Lieberman might “reach across the aisle” and welcome Foley into the party. Lieberman is a self righteous bastard like Foley…wouldn’t be surprised if he had something lurkin’ in his closet…
Grace and Geraldo will blame Clinton for this somehow…Grace will then call for Clinton’s immediate execution. He’s guilty because she says so…
Jane, I put up a pretty good Mark Foley poster over at my place yesterday.
Can someone explain to me how Spotlight works? I picked out the people I wanted to send it to, and then on the next screen I entered a comment. When I pushed the “preview” button, it said, “You must enter a comment. Really.” Which I had done. I tried several times and got the same result, and could not send the message. What am I missing?

I’ve been away and I wanted to share a few thoughts that accumulated over the weekend.
1. Lamont/Lieberman – is Jane going back to CT for the home stretch leading up to Nov. 7? I will be. And I understand the BBC guys will be back for the last week as well.
2. John Laesch (Hastert’s opponent). Everyone needs to give generously to this guy. He has a real shot, and regardless of whether he actually wins, he will help to rip apart the Republican leadership if he can force Hastert to start thinking about his own political future rather than having a ’safe seat’ from which to do Bush’s bidding. Supporting Laesch will exacerbate the tensions between Hastert’s political survival and his loyalty to his party. Laesch is positioned to attack this pressure point.
3. The D.C. pages. They are out there, trying to find the courage to speak out on what they have seen. If any happen to be reading, I want to encourage them to come forward. History will not be kind on the Republican party of this era. Many of those now in power will be in jail by the time that recent pages are graduating from college. There is nothing to be gained by maintaining silence to aid the current pool of Republicans in office – their time is almost up…
IMHO, age inappropriate sex trumps missing white women.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_grace
The Georgia Supreme Court has commented on Grace twice, first in a 1994 heroin trafficking case, Bell v. State, in which it was said that she “exceeded the wide latitude of closing argument” by referring to the defendant’s prior convictions for violent felonies which were not at issue in the case[citation needed].
In 1997, the court was more severe. Although its decision overturning the murder-arson conviction of businessman Wayne Weldon Carr in the death of his wife turned primarily on other issues, the court made note of Grace’s court actions, saying “inappropriate and illegal conduct in the course of the trial.”[citation needed]

For the picture selection, I pay homage to the late, great, Rodney Daingerfield:
You know what I’d like to see? A thread somewhere that catalogues all the things that democrats are doing with the Foley story (btw, I have yet to see/hear a clever quip for this–Predatorgate is so-so–anyone out there seen or heard a good one?)
So, for example, in NM-01 Madrid got Wilson to donate the 8k she got from Foley to a charity. I know Deborah Pryce’s opponent in Ohio was demanding that she return her Foley $$.
What is Reynolds opponent doing with this story? I really don’t see how he or Hastert survive this whole thing.
Sigh. Everyone was waiting for the Nancy Grace thread all along. I knew it.

It’s time for these women to step up and protect the children. Really. I think he’s just trolling for compliments.
But it does seem a little fishy…
Clicked through CNN this afternoon and two women were discussing the Foley story with breaking news still on the bottom of the screen. They both had serious concern tones and were worried about Foley and his family as if they were discussing a missing puppy. No concern for the youngsters involved or questions about the house leadership it was just weird.
I can’t watch that crap for more than a couple of minutes so perhaps they got around to other parts of the story. Sure was relieved to hear ABC played up the story this evening.

TRex, does The Graceful One have a number where people can call in with comments?
And another thing–that Forti pig from the NRCC, quoted in the NYTs as saying he’d be glad to take Foley’s 2.7 million dollar campaign warchest and spend it on other republicans–would be well advised to suggest instead that Foley’s money be donated to a charity working with victims of sex crimes.

There really is something pathological about the rightwing. It speaks volumes that liberals tend to be positive, empathetic, engaged, productive, curious, and honest folk, while wingnuttery attracts firecracker-up-a-frog’s-ass miscreants and misanthropes who’ll stop at nothing to gain power, and then abuse that power once they have it.

stranger and stranger, this tale becomes… I went over to the CREW website and poked around after I read that CREW had been given the emails back in the summer. here’s a quote: CREW’s Executive Director, Melanie Sloan, is a former federal prosecutor in DC. She prosecuted sex crimes. Her immediate reaction upon reviewing the emails was to notify the appropriate law enforcement authorities. So CREW says they notified the FBI in the summer? Who over at the J Edgar Ministry for Law and Order would they have notified? Was an investigation started then, or was this information from CREW’s official who is a former federal prosecutor with experience in sex crimes just thrown in the round file? Or did FBI/Justice become involved in a part of the coverup? Oh boy. This is really beginning to stink like the original Watergate did, wafting up from the Federal Triangle to form a cloud of miasma and fever that hung over the city for years.
from drudge–don’t go there and give him hits–there’s no active link on the site but here’s the header:

It’s possible. But I think the majority are power-hungry bordering on evil.
I will be watching for excusing their egregious behavior on being mentally ill. Be careful with your accusations.
*waves on his way by as he heads off to bed*
I sent my message to Nancy Grace’s comment page. Thanks for the link. The page asks you to designate whether your message is positive or negative. I checked “positive” and my message was in fact very positive with respect to Nancy’s efforts on behalf of victims and against perpetrators of crimes, particularly child sex offenders. I told her I was counting on her to cover this story in a big way.
Hi back to you, angie. I just ran downstairs to read the article you linked to in the comments. I passed it on. Went to Hampton Rds today and saw block after block of yard signs–every other house with Veterans For Allen. Also, Thelma Drake (ecch). In the same area, Three confederate flags. And Howie is pointing to emails which suggest Foley did more than email.

CREW’s Executive Director, Melanie Sloan, is a former federal prosecutor in DC. She prosecuted sex crimes. Her immediate reaction upon reviewing the emails was to notify the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
Just who at the FBI did CREW give those emails to? What happened at the FBI when a former federal prosecutor gave them evidence of possible crimes, including cyber-stalking, against children? Who over at the FBI and Justice would have known about this? More cover-ups? Involving the Executive branch as well as the Republican House?
The stink of this scandal is beginning to spread like the miasma from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave did in 1973.

Gosh, well. It was a beautiful service. I cried a lot more than I expected to. There was a HUGE crowd there.
Elissa’s mom asked me to type up my eulogy and send it to her.
Why does crying make you so ravenously hungry, or is that just me? After the service I was completely emotionally drained. Limp like a soggy dishrag. I had to have a pretty substantial nap with Juan Carlos before I could marshall my resources to write tonight.
g’night siun!
Foley checking into rehab is the bs of the most transparent kind. No one is going to buy this, or feel a shred of sympathy for him.
Nancy is on now locally, and she’s bashing OJ Simpson for still being alive. I’ll listen (but mostly not watch) to see if Foley comes up.
Somebody the other day offered up Le Cage aux Foley, but I forget who.
Helpless Dancer @ 138
Please do not make funny remarks about Tourette Syndrome. My son has it and it is not jokeworthy, OK? Thank you so much.
What Foley buys from a trip to rehab is 28 days protected from the media. When he gets out, the election will be over and he can have a tearful redemption on the 700 Club.
thanks for sharing that experience with us, TRex

Anyone who has known a person with tourette’s knows why jokes about it are simply not funny.
TRex,
God bless Elissa and her family, which you have widened so touchingly here.
Mad Dogs,
I heard the vote was split along party lines, but I figured after Pelosi called for a vote of record I could get my hands on something concrete. Something that proves Cubin voted for this investigation to be pushed on the back burner (back door, more like) of the Ethics committee.
You see, Hastert was in Casper, WY at an event for Cubin and now we have the GOP shills saying if Cubin wasn’t an important member of Congress, why would such a great man as Hastert come out here.
The good news is now the GOP is having to dump money into a state they usually walk away with…
Like I said, I appreciate any help!
Thanks.
So the counterattack phase is in full swing, in case no one’s noticed. Initial tack is to change the subject to “who leaked the IM’s to ABC?” Standard technique. Worked great on Dan Rather, if you recall: change the subject to the circumstances of the report, not the substance. I expect it will be out of the blogs and into the trad media sometime tomorrow. If they can actually nail down a source, the whole business of the GOP (Greasy Old Pederasts) covering for Foley like a bunch of Catholic Archbishops will be buried and it’ll all be about what nasty liberal betrayed the confidence they were all trying to preserve for that boy and his poor family.
Or at least that’s how they’d like it to go.
chisholm @ 145
Yea…how does alcoholism translate into SEXUAL PREDATION ON MINORS OVER MANY YEARS anyway? Don’t see this PR move working for them. Although with the lapdogs in the press, who knows anymore…
So Foley checked into rehab. So what? What’s Hastert’s excuse for covering the thing up? He drunk too? Maybe people will buy “oh, I emailed them kids when I was drunk,” but I don’t think they’ll buy “well, I orchestrated this illegal multi-year cover-up cuz I was toasted. Continuously. For years. Surprisingly, however, I was still able to perform my duties as the nation’s Third Most Powerful Government Official. But I was too wasted to realize that covering up a dirty sexual secret was a bad idea. Had I been less drunk, I might have remembered my own part in helping explode a nuclear IMPEACHMENT bomb under the previous President’s ass, when he tried to cover up a dirty sexual secret. Only with a girl.”
“Hi, I’m Dennis Hastert, I run your national legislature and I’m a drunken incompetent molester-protecting asshole” is really not a stellar defense. That’s scarcely better than “Hi, I’m Dennis Hastert. At least it wasn’t a blow-job.”
Was/is Foley married? Kids of his own?
Jane Hamsher @ 126
Thanks Jane. As a charter member of the club, I can attest to the necessity of taking responsibility and apologizing. It is painful and humiliating, but part of blundering around in life. Sometimes we are brilliantly creative [or delusional] and sometimes the loose cannon that hurts all within a given radius. Being honest and ready to accept responsibility helps reconcile us to other people.

Gotta wonder with Ney and now Foley, whether this is right out of the Repug playbook on how to put out a raging fire.
It’s alway so curious that they never hit Rehab until they get caught doing bad stuff.
And I suppose “blame the booze” is one of those “forgivable sins” that Fundys can buy into.
Grace just told a guest “I don’t need you to give me a history lesson.” Snarl.

couple of days ago I jumped on the “Foley-gate is no laughing matter” bandwagon, but here I am already letting down my guard and succumbing to crassness:
if Foley had been hitting on teenage girls instead, there would have been a simple solution – fit him with a chase-titty belt.

Here’s a the info I was referring to:The House voted unanimously Friday to launch an investigation.
Will Foley’s “treatment” last until November 8 where he’ll be magically cured except for the chronic side effects of being a mute amnesiac?
I had read somewhere that Foley has a partner and that not only is he a predator, but also an unfaithful man (at least as far as his IMs go). As far as I can see, never married and no kids and is very close to one sister, Donna.
chisholm @ 103
Hmm, an excuse of an abuse problem to which many can relate.
Oh yeah,
I’m picking up what you’re putting down.
What I’m talking about is the Pelosi clip, you know with the GOP “Boo’s” and all.
In the clip, Pelosi asked for a “vote of record” showing those wanting a full house investigation and those who wanted to send the matter to the ethic and rules committee.
montag @ 172
Yeah, but accountability is one of the primary tenets of 12-step programs. If he thinks he’s going to get off lightly that way, he’s got another think coming.

Ha! There sure seems to be alot of mute amnesiacs in the Repubelickin Party.
I’m pretty sure Nancy Grace is a winger. Someone that obnoxious has to be. And we know Rita Cosby is.
Considering how silent RedState has been about the House cover-up, I’ll bet most of the goopers stay eerily quiet – unless, of course, they decide to:
- go on the offense and try to portray it as a smear job or witchhunt by dems/the librul media
- go on a witchhunt of their own and look under every floor board for a sinful or complicit dem.
I don’t think I’d hold my breath, though, for Nancy to do anything that hurts republicans. I really expect her to go on her self-righteous way with her other cases and completely ignore this one.
Just IMO

Wyo Nate—it’s one of the links in the Kos article. Look for “passed unanimously” and “unanimous”.
TRex @ 174
Yeah, that’s the back end. I’m thinking of the front end. Is this an attempt to excuse unrelated bad behavior with a new bad behavior?
I.e., “I chased teenaged boys because I’m a drunk.” The order of events suggests that that was a lot easier to say than “I chase teenaged boys, and, by the way, I am a drunk.”
The first says to people, “you can understand, can’t you?” The latter says, “gee, I’m doubly fucked as a human being.”
But, I take little from this latest news except that it seems like a ploy to me. Voluntarily checking into the Betty Ford clinic for three weeks is not the same as being ordered to a local clinic by a court, where they are not so tolerant of backsliders and not so impressed with one’s star status.
Only time will tell. My guess is that two years from now, this check-in will become part of Foley’s credentials with the religious right wing and he’ll be writing books and visiting talk shows about his come-to-Jesus moment as he was being brought down by the evils of alcohol and gaydom….

Thought it was strange how Hastert got his panties in bunch last Spring when a Democrat was caught with cash in his freezer, and he didn’t think the FBI should mess with Congressmen. Guess we now know why Haster was so worked up!.
Phil K @ 189
At least it sounds better than “The Devil made me do it”, as Flip Wilson used to say.
Nancy Grace ended her show with “tips for online safety for children.” No mention of creepy congressmen asking for photos…
neurophius @ 196
How the hell did you make it through that entire show?
Dover Bitch @ 197
The way I make it through most TV news shows. I don’t really “watch” it; the TV is not in my direct line of sight when I sit at my computer, I have to turn my head 90 degres to see it. I have the sound on low in the background, and if I hear anything that interests me I will turn it up and maybe look over. I did not have to stare at Nancy’s flaring nostrils for any extended period of time.
Nancy Grace cover the story, impossible, in case you have not noticed, since ted turner left this station is as conservative as fox, only they are worse because the pretend to be otherwise. Rove calls all shots on cnn fox and many other strong outlets. we only have us,keith, stewart and colbert. how very sad.
mad hatter @ 199
Well, at least we do have those folks to look forward to in the coming week. I am sure none of them will ignore it. I hope Keith hits hard on the leadership coverup and inaction.
Funny how Foley checks into rehab thinking maybe I can defuse this thing by doing a Mel Gibson thing. Problem is, if he had done it when he resigned he might have confounded the mechanism that jumps into overdrive when children are involved.
Foley is going to wake up to the nightmare of the textbook version type, when he gets out of his closed door room.
Every curious vehicle from the media world is laying low, just waiting to ask him questions, and I’m so sorry to say to the Republican party, “Welcome to what goes around comes around”,
I can remember going to the Drudge Report for every day for two years so I could get kicked in the balls about what the Republican party was doing to the Democrats on that day.
Can’t say you haven’t earned this my Republican friends, NIE report, Tenet-Condoleeza covered up meeting that the 9/11 Commission didn’t report, to the Foley investigation that is going to turn into the tsunami that drowned the Republican party.
I honestly can’t say you don’t deserve it.

I think T was pointing out the natural affinity between FoleyGate and her typical lurid content. If she thinks it will get eyeballs (oh, and it will..), she’ll run it.
You’re right about CNN soft-pedaling the interminable sins of the Bush Crime Family, but this story is just too sleazy to pass up. But then again, I thought they would’ve bust it open with Gannon and Male-Hooker-in-the-White-House-Gate, so maybe you’re right.
We’ll know soon.
TRex @
174
The fax I saw quoted (the text appears in a comment to this AmericaBlog post) does not say anything about a 12-step program. It says “I made arrangements to enter a renowned in-patient facility to address my disease and related issues.”
Personally, I take a fairly dim view of such “rehab” clinics. They’re expensive and afaik have a track record nowhere nearly as good as 12-step programs, which do, as you point out, focus on personal responsibility and accountability. Not exactly core Republican values.
two beers @ 202
I have CNN on a lot of the time, and I think they have devoted a fair amount of coverage to it so far. Of course, they will probably take off on the Foley-into-rehab tangent, have Chuck Colson or Jimmy Baker or some other loser on to talk about how they are praying for Foley, rather than following the abdication of leadership angle, or following Foley’s dirty money. But who knows.
I don’t know about Headline Prime, or whatever they call that offshoot channel that Nancy Grace is on. Tonight was the first time I watched them.
He checked into rehab for protection, don’t kid yourselves. Don’t wanna be disappeared now does he? This is gonna blow WIDE OPEN. And without the critters in session, its red meat for the blogs and the MSM will follow.
AND WAIT UNTIL Keith/Jon/Steven get their teeth into it. We’ll be lucky if Cheney doesn’t attack China/Russia to WAG this DOG.

which is eight days longer than Foley’s 28-day program. Is there a way to organize a press conference with 1,000 parents of kids abused through internet chats or text message scams, timed to convene at the current creep’s release (graduation?) time outside of the gates of the faux Hazeldon Spa to which Foley has been exfoliated?
I predicted Sept 25 for the October surprise. It came and went. Then I predicted the 3rd week of October. But this is intriguing in a more than vaguely tinfoil hat sort of way, but – had to get it on the record:

neurophius @
209
augmenting the little I know, here’s wikipedia:
In general, the buyer of a put option expects the price of stock to fall significantly, but does not want to sell the stock short because that could result in large losses if the stock does go up anyway. (With a put option, the loss is limited to the purchase price of the option.) The seller of the put option generally feels that the stock in question is reasonably priced, and should the price fall, the seller may be willing to become the owner of the stock at a lower price, considering it to be a bargain. (On the other hand, the seller of the put may be merely gambling.)
Looks like the players on certain blue chips are getting nervous about that date. I have no idea why.

Here’s an ugly angle – only Republican pages received warnings about Foley’s Bergere. Dem pages were left to fend for themselves.
(from Brian Ross)
Pages report to either Republican or Democratic supervisors, depending on the political party of the member of Congress who nominate them for the page program.
Several Democratic pages tell ABC News they received no such warnings about Foley.
from about five hours ago:
That has NOTHING TO DO with how the Leadership dealt with the emails from Foley to the Page from Louisiana.
TPM Reader AL makes a good point about Hastert’s letter to the Attorney General:
Hastert still maintains the focus on just one of Foley’s emails:
“As I am sure you are aware, there are two different and distinct communications at issue here. First, Mr. Foley sent an email to a former page of Representative Alexander in the fall of 2005. This email was determined to be “over friendly” by Representative Alexander’s office but was not sexual in nature.”
. . .
Hastert separates what he still maintains is one “overfriendly” email and the “investigation” of it from the existence of the explicit IMs. On the face of it, that is defensible. There has not yet been any evidence that he or anyone in Congress knew of those IMs. We’ll see how far that lasts.
But his request for an investigation is directed SOLELY at those “sexually explicit communications,” and who knew of them, when, and what they did.
“Therefore, I also request that the Department undertake an investigation into who had specific knowledge of the content of any sexually explicit communications between Mr. Foley and any former or current House pages and what actions such individuals took, if any, to provide them to law enforcement. I request that the scope of your investigation include any and all individuals who may have been aware of this matter-be they Members of Congress, employees of the House of Representatives, or anyone outside the Congress.”
That has NOTHING TO DO with how the Leadership dealt with the emails from Foley to the Page from Louisiana.

I have a feeling it’s going to get a lot worse soon. I was yawning about the hijacker video along with everyone else—no real news there, I thought—until it dawned on me that it means They’re really worried about the various false flag rumours concerning 9-11. So they’re trying to show with the videos that these guys really did all know each other in the training camps, that they took actions like making will and testament tapes that show they intended to go on a suicide mission, and so they couldn’t be just patsies, as one version of the false-flag theory has it.
And that fear might mean They’ve lost control of more information showing their lack of diligence in the face of what should have been alarming intelligence—though this week’s news of the covered-up July 10, 2001 meeting is already quite damning. If Tenet and Black were already alarmed enough to take such a step as showing up at Condi Rice’s at that time, then there’s yet more that happened between then and the August 6 pdb, and also after it.

Yeah. Another flaccid, inert piece of crap from The Gray Lady. We can’t have the nation get upset now, can we??? GRRRR…
Rehab might deal with an alcohol problem, but the little problem-0 of being a child predator? Not so much. The recidivism rates for adults who prey on kids is very high, there is not a”cure”for this. Mental health pros have been struggling with that for years. There’s a lack of empathy and compassion for others that is difficult if not impossible to restore in the adult human once it’s lost.
A 16 yr old kid is still a child, not a mini adult. Some are more emotionally mature than others to be sure, but these kids don’t have the years of experience yet to be considered adults. Sure, they can drive, get a job after school, but they are still in the process of learning to be adults. So,while they may not be babies anymore, they are still children.
What I don’t wanna see is any of these kids being used by Nancy Grace as some sort of sordid little fodder for her show. I hope she sinks her claws into this, but leaves the kids out of it. The transcript of the IMs and the emails speak for themselves quite loudly. She doesn’t need to talk to the kids, there’s plenty to work with without the kids being involved.
Ths story is not going to fly well with all those soccer/security moms out there. It’s not just Foley, this goes to the heart of the GOP leadership, and that needs to be hammered on relentlessly.
I find it hard to believe that all this ass covering and protecting is just to deal with one guy’s political career. With all their money and PR firms,it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that they did nothing about this, when they could have used it as a HUGE,”see,we care about kids and corruption,we got rid of this guy”moment that would have boosted those poll numbers and gave them lots of fodder for the tee vee. Nope. This is WAY bigger than Foley. Who else are they trying to protect?

I find it worth noting that after extensive consultation with a mental health professional, he is still not able to claim that he has actually been “diagnosed” as an alcoholic (is it phrased that way?) only that he believes that he is (not even that the doc, the family, etc)

Media has been force feeding us all kinds of sex stories for years because “that’s what viewers want”. If they are not all over the Foley coverup story, it’s going to look very peculiar.
Funny thing about Rita Cosby. Even the right wingers I know can’t stand her.
Trex trivia: It’s the 10th anniversary of the Sever’s Corn Maze & Fall Festival in Shakopee, MN. This is a 14 acre maze of 8-9ft tall corn stalks carved in shapes. The first maze theme in 1997 on 5.7 acres was Tyrannosaurus Rex.

No kidding — also finding the most vulnerable of the pack. The ones that he would sense as being strong enough to stand up to him wouldn’t be targeted for the next level of ‘attention.’ And where he did make a mistake (the kid who described it as “sicksicksick” and reported), he could count on the power situation to catch his back.

BQ – this makes me so mad… what is wrong with us that we can’t (won’t?) protect the most vunerable among us?… in our understandable desire to see the guilty punished and publically shamed, i hope we will remind ourselves to do everything we can to protect those who’ve been harmed – and that includes not using them for props. for example, i would strongly argue against the following (unless it was organized and directed by the parents themselves).
Ed*ard Teller @ 207
which is eight days longer than Foley’s 28-day program. Is there a way to organize a press conference with 1,000 parents of kids abused through internet chats or text message scams, timed to convene at the current creep’s release (graduation?) time outside of the gates of the faux Hazeldon Spa to which Foley has been exfoliated?

I agree that warning their own pages about Foley while keeping the Dems and their pages in the dark is a huge part of this.
I also agree that there should be outrage on the part of dem pages’ parents because of the leadership completely selling out their safety.
but…
I keep wondering if someone basically told Foley to keep it to Republican pages. (or maybe he limited it himself, sort of like his apparent dodge that the pages were already out of the program when he made his move(s). — Cited by the page alumni kid as a reason for not reporting it, since there was no ’supervisor’ of the relationship anymore)
Does anyone else think someone had a talk with Foley amounting to “If you can’t keep it in your pants, at least keep it in the [party]!”? I know, I know, we’d never prove it, but I’d bet it happened, just the same.
Can’t find anything on the CREW site about Sloane notifying FBI in summer. Could be my search deficiency.

selise,
in agreement with you on both points (we don’t want to “Schiavo” these kids; that’s the Thugs mo). I also imagine (for the reasons stated in a comment awaiting moderation for some reason) that it is probably restricted to Repuplican interns, whose odds-on seriously connected parents would be not likely to do anything of the kind. (also likely only R pages cuz any D pages who decided to report would likely seek out D to report to)
Someone mentioned Foley’s vote on CAFTA as being one that made the difference, and I found this snippet from back when everyone was scrambling for Delay’s position.

emphasis mine — sure, right. An R buck moneyed interests on the basis of a superior argument? I’ll believe it when I see it.
mornin’ all,
all 3 broadcast morning shows lead with Foley, followed closely by Woodward’s book
Selise, I’ve thought of that angle as well and that that door swings both ways – as a Deputy Whip, Foley may have been in a position to let them know he knew where a few of their bodies were buried and was therefore untouchable

Josh’s guest writer DK at TPM might agree with you.
I was simply working off my own standard operating procedure of “never blame on malice what could equally well be blamed on incompetence.” I recognize that most of what we know about so far clearly could not have been incompetence. Here I think it entirely plausible that they really were trying to save a single seat here. I don’t happen to (yet) believe that the bad acts themselves extend so far that that is the reason they were covered up. I hadn’t much considered this angle, but it’s hard to argue strongly against it.
But one of the key things this scandal teaches us is: release your inner cynic. So I don’t think you’ve crossed too far. Once you recognize they are willing to cover up for child sexual predators in order to hold onto a single seat, that’s pretty much an open invitation to imagine any machination.
When it comes to cynicism, there are now no limits.
cbl,
good point.
Foley’s District
iswas a “safe” GOP seat. Foley could have been quietly forced to resign and another Republican would have been elected. There was no need to keep Mark Foley in order to keep that District. Now how safe is that seat? Looks like it’s a guaranteed Democratic win!And for our own Priscilla, Queen of the Beach

One Democratic incumbent with a real lead, Cantwell.
One Democratic open seat with a Democrat in the lead, Cardin in Maryland.

my trouble with the application of “Hanlon’s Razor” in this case is that there is so much counter evidence – isn’t stupidity unlikely to explain how bush is now in his 6th year as president, there is an R majority in the senate and the house and a majority of the supreme court were appointed by Rs…. you see my problem?
*ilson46201 @ 271
You know *ilson, maybe that is where he learned it?
As we learned over the last few years, alter boys have often been on the recieving end of unwanted advances. Often by priests who otherwise seemed very supportive and “on their side”.
This morning’s papers have these stories from the Cong. Pages Alumni association going on and on about how Foley was the only one who bothered to learn their names, he was the only one who talked politics with them, he was the only one who came to the “pages graduation” ceremony. There was a quote from one of the alumni saying abpout Foley “he just loved pages”
As is so often the case with sexual abuse, the abused grows up to be the abuser. Think about his choice to gravitate toward a Cong. committee that dealt with protecting exploited children. Why would he choose that issue?
Although, I am glad that a “safe seat” is now up for grabs. I am really glad that this may shine a like on th eunderlying corruption of the GOP leadership on the Hill.
I would consider being thoughtful, rather than gleeful, in my comments about Foley himself. I very strongly suspect when the investigation is done, it will turn out that Foley was himself a victim at one time.
It does not in any way shape or form excuse what he has done, more importantly is really, really does not excuse the cover up (which I believe should be our focus, the willingness to put further children at risk is just mind boggling), but going after him personally may say unflattering things about our own characters.
It’s the House (and possibly party) leadership that bears the hugest sin here. As someone pointed out upthread, once they found out, they could have had Foley quietly resign or even retire at the end of a term. The seat would have stayed safe because of the demographics of the district.
They covered this up and allowed additional classes of pages to be exposed to the danger this man posed, knowing of that danger.
In my mind, this makes them every bit as culpable and corrupt as the Catholic Church was for covering up for the pedophile priests.
And I totally agree with Selise. Folks, please lay off the pages. These are child crime victims!
Mornin’ Thread!
just for the whole circular sense, this is what Foley did with his Abramafia money:
http://www.citizensforethics.o……06.06.pdf
I wonder if it’s the same one he’s fled to now. I keep thinking of Michael Keaton’s character in Clean and Sober, who runs to rehab to hide from all the people who are after him.

I didn’t know if it was her adenoidal delivery, her plangent, self-righteous tone, her Crystal Carrington shoulder pads . . .
Especially the Crystal Carrington/Joan Crawford shoulder pads! Blech! I can’t tolerate that woman. I went through the excruciating experience of washing dishes, while someone else was watching her recent Jon Benet fest. She *kept* mentioning “paaanties.” Not once but many times. I was beyond anger for this dead little girl and not at any “perp,” but at Ms. shoulder pads/houseplant head for asking us the American public to share her obsession with JonBenet’s “paaaanties.”
BQ @

BQ – I couldn’t find that quote anywhere in the CREW site either, and I spent about a half hour looking.
I would observe that if only the republican pages were warned, there’s got to be a conspiracy with more than just a few players here. There’s something about this tidbit that doesn’t feel right. I’m remaining skeptical until I see it professionally sourced and documented.
I think it essential that we keep on kicking the Repugs on their way to oblivion.
Nothing like a sex scandal to get the attention of people. And with the moral depvravity of the actions by Foley and the leadership by the cover up, it will drive the point home about how the Repug leadership are criminals.

I watched that segment. For once Solidad seemed to be trying to do some a little real interviewing. She musta had an extra cup of coffee today.
However, the term she used for it, IIRC was “overfriendly” emails or soemthign like that.
Solicitng sex with a child in line is crime people? The emails that constitute such solicitation are not confined to ” dear underage age child, will you have sex with me?, signed your over 21 pedophile friend”
Over friendly? Naughty?
Try child endangering. Or how about pornographic? Or psychologocally damaging to the child? (OK, that last one is kinda wordy and clumsy for TeeVee)
Sheesch! Why would anyone try to euphamize this? These are children. CHidren living away from home. There safety is entrusted to Congress. Congress stands, at least symbolically, in loco parentis to these children and is supposed to protect them.

I agree that almost everything we know should be attributed directly to malice. I was just addressing the comment that the page scandal must go further than Foley, otherwise why would they risk so much for a single seat? On that particular point, I’m still willing to believe they’re just that stupid. But I’m acutely aware that I could easily be wrong about that.

Some of Abramoff’s clients contributed to Democrats, but he DISCOURAGED them from doing so. Once they signed on with him their giving to Democrats dramatically declined as has been repeatedly pointed out.
