Howie Klein follows local House races closer than anybody — some would say closer than the DCCC. He’s been on the story of Mark Foley for months now (having written 79 count ‘em posts on the subject), and today Foley (who is chair of the Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus) resigned as the result of a scandal created when he tried to pick up an underaged congressional page.
This is exactly why a 50 State Strategy is so important — you never know when this stuff is going to happen, especially when you’re dealing with Republicans. It’s a vindication of Howard Dean’s work, and even Rahm Emmanuel should be happy (he managed to drive out our Blue America candidate, Dave Lutrin, in favor of apostate Republican Tim Mahoney back in March).
Chalk up another in the long list of GOP sex scandals. Then go pat Howie Klein on the back, he was on this one long before anybody else.
It’s sure to re-ignite the saga of the Sick Bastards of the GOP, but that’s always one of my favorite topics anyway so I’m not complaining.

Reading ABC, it seems the most solid dirt is in IM’s:
A Republican in a solid seat doesn’t resign this fast without some serious shit coming down the pipe.
Seems he knows it too:
Now the question is, how far did he get in his solicitations?

We must ask ourselves: Are children safe around GOP congressmen?
Should we not just lock up all Republican congressmen now, just to be safe, and ask questions later?
I believe the Bush Administration’s extra-judicial activities in the GWOT have provided us with a suitable model for how to deal with this crisis.
Can we expect Nancy Grace, Greta Van Sustren, and the rest of the Missing White Woman Brigade to cover this story 24/7 in all it’s lurid detail?

It’s a lot harder to get up every morning and act like a Christianist Republican rather than a normal human being. Sometimes you need a break. Sometimes you need more than one break. Sometimes you need to break something. And sometimes something inside you just breaks.

“The Republican Leadership in Congress put a pedophile in charge of the committee to protect our most vulnerable children.”
I’m tired of playing nice. Tie Foley to the leadership’s inability to exercise good judgment on any topic whatsoever.
Also, some interesting questions: did Congressman Foley have a security clearance? Did making advances towards underage boys make him vulnerable in any way to blackmail? (Admittedly, this question kind of answers itself.) Did anyone in the leadership have the slightest hint of that? If so, did they report it? If not, why not?
Did I mention I’m tired of playing nice?

I think another validation of the 50-state strategy was provided by the GOP in Connecticut. You pointed out to the one right-wing commenter who showed up to post an opinion yesterday on the Schlessinger matter that if the GOP had taken the race seriously, they might be leading right now. Instead, they just came up with a placeholder, and now here they are in a distant third. Now the best they can hope for is that an unreliable once-Democratic ally will win.

The McGreevey comparisons should start any minute now. Frankly, the speed of the resignation is a bit surprising to me. Even if the IMs are especially salacious, he’s still got plausible deniability. (”I should never have given Senator Clinton my password.”) I think he’s either about to get indicted, or his co-conspirators (Kenny? Karlita? Is that you?) want to get rid of him as quickly as possible before anyone starts looking at this any more closely.
We are getting quite a collection by now: Cunningham(R), Ney(R) and now Foley(R) and that is only the tip of the iceberg(R).

Most likely to me, as one who has worked with child abuse and child abuse prevention agencies, is that more than one page is involved in this mess and Foley’s lawyer is trying to stop the bleeding. “If you want to minimize – not avoid, but minimize – any jail time, we’ve got to get this off the front page now, and that means resigning. Period. If you don’t, you can look for another lawyer who will give you different advice – and good luck in finding one.”

I agree that there are probably MANY pages involved, but I doubt his lawyer is involved yet. If Foley was stupid enough to get in this kind of mess to begin with, he’s probably too stupid to call his lawyer before the cops show up. Unless, of course, his lawyer saw the news and called him. If that’s the case, he’s got a damn good lawyer. Doubt it, though. There’s far more to this story, methinks.

Frank Probst @ 55
John Aravosis at AmericaBlog says that someone sent him the emails months ago, but because he couldn’t verify them, he didn’t run with it. This mess has probably been percolating for a while, and something behind the scenes pushed Foley into resigning today.
That could be any (or several) of a long list of things: impending charges being filed, additional victims coming forward, media outlets getting a hold of the emails and calling for a comment, . . .
But the timing still is interesting. He sticks around long enough to get the detainee stuff through, then resigns when Congress goes into recess . . .
Let’s also watch to see who helps to pay Foley’s legal bills – it’s not going to be cheap.
I won’t be surprised if the PRO-TORTURE party hasn’t already started proceedings in Congress to retroactively legalize pedophilia, just to be on the safe side.

Mark Warner on Lamont, from MyDD
I pushed his staff really hard on this last week at the Warner-Webb fundraiser, saying a large number of party activists and progressives viewed stronger support for Lamont as a “litmus test.” That phrase from you guys directly to the campaign people.
Warner:
“Ned Lamont and I come from the business world – where results matter and no one considers it a good day’s work to have just poked the other side in the eye and gotten nothing done. That’s now how it is right now in Washington . Ned Lamont gets it. Washington needs an entrepreneurial approach, Washington needs Ned Lamont….
I agree that we need a plan to get out of Iraq —and real action to make us safer. Most alarmingly this week, the latest National Intelligence Estimate concludes “that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.” Think about it.
…It’s time for congressional leadership that will stand up to the current administration and move America forward. It’s time to put Ned Lamont in the U.S. Senate.”
i agree there must be some really salacious details to this story for him to flush his political carreer that fast. i just read about the first questionable emails yesterday. while they were a touch odd, there was nothing overtly sexual in them. the new im’s must just be full on smut. and in this day and age what sort of idiot politician are you to send dirty electronic messages to an underage boy.
Some enterprising blogger needs to put up a website where we can get a comprehensive overview and information on all the scandalous stuff that the GOP has been caught at in recent years. And just to be fair, let’s include the Democrats as well. I think they would profit from the comparison.

According to a few textbooks haunting my shelves, one name for the something is “projection”.
Apologies for O/T.
I guess I just hold on to my anger a bit too long. Everyone else seems to be having fun..
But I was following through on the promises I made to Sherrod Brown yesterday.
I informed him that as a protest against his vote in favor of the Military Commissions aka “Torture” bill:
1) I will not make any more contributions to Democratic candidates for 06;
2) I will explain to each of the campaigns I have supported in the past why I am taking this action. Specifically, it is a protest against Brown’s self-serving, unprincipled and plain stupid decision to vote for this bill. The ludicrous and insulting “excuse” for his behavior that Brown posted on his website did not help matters either.
3) To hammer home the point, I sent a $50 contribution to DeWine, his opponent, and copied the receipt to Brown. DeWine’s politics are odious and he’s a major Bush enabler; in fact I object to almost everything he stands for. But this was not just a gratuitous display of emotion; rather it was the only action I could think of that might persuade Brown not to take our support for granted.
Actually #3 was contingent: I would not contribute to DeWine if the Brown campaign provided a satisfactory explanation. Either that, or an apology for the misjudgment would have been acceptable.
Some people may think I took this protest too far. But it is the only way I could think of to serve notice on these arrogant bastards that they must abide by a least a minimal standard of decency if they want our money and support to continue.
I’m not going to suggest that anybody else do something similar, because if I did it might get me into trouble. And it would be unfortunate if it really pissed off the other candidates and provoked a bunch of negative publicity. Brown might be seen as an unlucky scapegoat, set up as an example of what could happen to a Democrat who abandons his/her principles. Don’t you think?

Diebold Added Secret Patch to Georgia E-Voting Systems in 2002, Whistleblowers Say
By Matthew Cardinale, News Editor, Atlanta Progressive News (September 28, 2006)
(APN) ATLANTA – Top Diebold corporation officials ordered workers to install secret files to Georgia’s electronic voting machines shortly before the 2002 Elections, at least two whistleblowers are now asserting, Atlanta Progressive News has learned.
Former Diebold official Chris Hood told his story concerning the secret “patch” to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., for Kennedy’s second article on electronic voting in this week’s Rolling Stone Magazine.
Hood’s claims corroborate a second whistleblower who spoke with Black Box Voting and Wired News in 2003.
Whistleblower Accounts
“With the primaries looming, [Chief of Diebold’s Election Division] Urosevich was personally distributing a ‘patch,’ a little piece of software designed to correct glitches in the computer program,” Rolling Stone Magazine reported.
“We were told that it was intended to fix the clock in the system, which it didn’t do,” Hood told Rolling Stone. “The curious thing is the very swift, covert way this was done.”
“It was an unauthorized patch, and they were trying to keep it secret from the state,” Hood told Rolling Stone.
“We were told not to talk to county personnel about it. I received instructions directly from Urosevich. It was very unusual that a president of the company would give an order like that and be involved at that level,” Hood told Rolling Stone.

I remember you telling us that. It’s great. Yesterday emails went out from Wesley Clark and Warner in support of Lamont.
I’m fuming because there was an article in the Hartford Courant about all the underhanded Dems supporting Lieberman – including former Clinton administration people.
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2….._0928.html
We need to understand that we have really angered the DLC and other establishment forces within the Dem party (DCCC, DSCC)- and they are doing whatever they can to help Lieberman so they can put the netroots in their place. There are a number of posts on the Lamont blog crowing about the Q poll and cheering the demise of the netroots. (And by the way, if the Q poll concerns you, you should take a look at the way the questions were worded, i.e. Question # 6 – “How important is the ability of the candidates to reach across party lines to get things done in Washington” )
I know there are all sorts of elections going on across the country – and a lot of incredible candidates (I’m blown away by those spotlighted by ActBlue) – but the Lamont campaign now has the Republican party and the Dem establishment fighting as hard as it can to make sure Lieberliar stays in office. So, whatever support, moral or otherwise you can give to the campaign will be much appreciated. We helped start the fight and I hope we can help finish it.

To clarify from above, I wrote this statement [not MyDD, & not Warner]:
“I pushed his staff really hard on this last week at the Warner-Webb fundraiser, saying a large number of party activists and progressives viewed stronger support for Lamont as a “litmus test.” That phrase from you guys directly to the campaign people.”
Ed*ard Teller — I think the Blue America campaign has been going pretty well; there will always be some constituent, candidate, district that will claim they haven’t gotten ample coverage in this medium, simply because there’s more out there than this place can cover. Benson may yet get coverage – but will she need it as badly as a more contested, tighter race where the opposition isn’t as clearly corrupt as that running against Benson?
Peterr — nope, Foley doesn’t get mentioned in Batches 1 through 3. But I never really expected his name to come up anyhow, given the stuff Abramoff et al were working on with the White House.
Greenberg Taurig needs to be hosed out. I would love to see an investigation go through that entire organization. Abramoff and all the names that come from that firm with which he worked are arrogant f*cks that believed they OWNED the White House. I cannot believe the reaction to an ethics refresher which White House folks had to attend, in which they were told the Native American tribes did not need lobbyists but only to contact the government directly; Abramoff et al at Greenberg Taurig thought the White House was f*cking them (and yes, they say just that) and were going have the ethics coach fired.
Criminals. The lot of them.
K Street needs to be burnt to the ground if Greenberg Taurig is only representative.
Tortoise — for the sake of the rest of this country, I hope that Brown wins over DeWine.

Actually, quite a few of us are. Read the comments in the Good Times thread from yesterday. Brown’s never getting another dime from me. Which, of course, isn’t something you can do on TCP-based connections, but that won’t stop them, nor will it stop wingnuttia from praising it to the heavens.
Good news in that it looks like it’s a gift seat for the Blue column. It’s probably good it’s a Friday too. There are bigger fish to fry than Mark Foley and we have a lot of work to do. I hope this doesn’t continue to dominate the news and take the pressure off where it belongs, The White House.
Sh*t — they were TERRIFIED of Howard Dean.
Right there in the Abramoff emails.
Damn the conventional wisdom and the entrenched power players in the Democratic Party for their stupidity, blindness and simple craveness.

Rayne @ 2:58 pm (#125)
I always figured they were. The wingnut talking points during the early primary run in 2004 were always about how angry and crazy Howard Dean was. This always led me to suspect they were afraid of him.
Taylor Marsh is covering this also. She has an update with an excerpted e-mail.Hooo Boy.

One of the biggest frustrations for me as I observe Diane Benson’s campaign gain traction up here, particularly among military families, is the plain fact that Howard Dean’s people have all but ignored Diane. The campaign has so little $ compared to Young that it is ridiculous that she is closer to Young than anyone has been in sixteen years. We don’t know for sure though, because we don’t even have enough $ to hire a pollster. I got info from a Young volunteer that their secret poll has Diane off less than ten points!
I’m just a volunteer on the Benson campaign, btw, not a staffer. There’s only one of those. And he’s good.
As far as the triage goes, Rayne, that’s a valid point. But I see this from here as a 49-state strategy. Once again, Alaska seems to have been written off….
Hi ET!
Any new news on Ted Stevens and his son? (I know – too much to hope for on a Friday afternoon, but after the Foley mess broke wide open . . . )
Great quote from Foley’s lawyer a couple of weeks ago about the Mahoney defamation suit
“”There is zero evidence that Mark was associated with any type of improper conduct in Congress,” Foley attorney Coleman said. “He’s as honorable as they get.”"
Ha ha ha ha. Buh Bye.
Peterr — no quote; Neil Volz attaches a copy of an article from primary to an email without comment, but the article discusses Dean’s position on Medicare and about his 1995 stance that favored a Republican plan.
The man was too conservative for them — scared the snot out of them.
And with Dean the lobbyists would have been out of business.
Speaking of Dean, wasn’t it ABC’s directional mic that caught the Scream? Hmm.
I hope this story doesn’t take attention away from the White House.
While Foley’s demise is tasty and succulent, with several steaming courses to follow, I wouldn’t put it past the self-destructive Cons themselves to have thrown this pedophile to the wolves at this precise moment to take the heat off Bush and Congress for the flagrantly antiAmerican torture legislation that pardons Bush and his torturers for crimes already committed.
THAT’s the story to stay focused on.
Extreme rightwing ‘christians’ have a way of forgiving other Republican christians the most horrific sexual crimes without batting a well lacquered eyelash. And while Pepto Bismol sales will go up for a day or two among them, they’ll be back in shape and ready to torture again in no time at all.
bdu @ 108

ET — I hear you. But as Howard Dean said, You have the power.
Have you made contact with the DFA folks in the district? Done any brainstorming about this with them?

Let’s not forget that other all-time favorite, reaction formation, whereby “anxiety-producing or unacceptable emotions are replaced by their direct opposites.”
Here’s the example Wikipedia gives. Keep Foley’s work for the Child Exploitation committee in mind while reading it:

dab #91,
I have contributed several hundreds of dollars to Lamont, Wulsin and others over the past few months. (And I have some of Howie’s CDs to prove it).
I had not understood before yesterday that Sherrod Brown was just another goddamn DINO. Actually I was surprised — although that was pretty stupid of me given the way Hackett (somebody with obvious integrity) was thrown overboard to clear the decks for Brown (somebody …out ……. …..ity)
Democrats won’t even hew to a party line, how can we encourage them to represent our interests when they are only focused on their own. How can we force them to accept an iota of accountability? As a party, they are utterrly useless.
Whats the solution? Here is mine:
1) Hit them individually
2) Hit them hard
3) Hit them where it hurts, i.e., their own self interest, invariably their #1 issue. Threaten their funding, support, volunteers. That sort of thing will actually get their attention.
Picking one specific target at a time and piling on would be the most effective approach. If its “not fair”, so much the better.
Frighten them. Its transparently obvious by now that they won’t even try to shape up unless they are scared witless first. Scared of us. You know, like the pugs are of Rove.
I really can’t think of anything else that might work.
That said, FDL’s abounds with kind and gentle souls. I can see how this not entirely couth approach might come over as a bit “vigorous” at first.
TRex @ 141
Wow, that WAS fast, given that I hadn’t really circulated it anywhere but here. Maybe an another forum found it… I’m hosting the cropped one on my website, so that’s still around for us, aside from whatever trex got as well.
Rayne –
Forgive me if you answered this in another thread, I don’t have the time to read previous ones, but — are these Abramoff scumbag emails available online? Or did you somehow get a stash of them through an offline connection?
That bit about Howard Dean is something I’d love to be able to read myself (so that I could then pass it on to others!). Thanks.
Oh, btw, there’s a Phoenix branch of Greenberg/Traurig, those pigs. During a local anti-war demo, our citizen troops marched right past their offices. Mr. K8 and I did our best informing everybody around us exactly who these folks are and their relationship to Abramoff. Most of the other demonstrators we spoke with that day had no idea about it.
More education of the public is needed! That’s a given, considering our pathetic corporate “free press” infrastructure. Solving that problem is such a biggee, but I’m proud of how everyone here is working on it!
Good God, they projected like mad about Democratic Congressmembers’ lack of ethics.
Cripes, the stuff I’m reading makes Dems look like Cub Scouts.
The Republicans absolutely see no difference, no separation between their political party, their government and their business — not even their personal lives. They have boundary issues of an incredible magnitude.
And it is exemplified by their spoiled frat-boy king, who cannot see that touching people without permission is wrong (i.e., Angela Merkel’s back rub), who cannot understand why his job is separate from that of Congress or the Judiciary (i.e., unilateral unitary executive), who cannot understand why people would have anything but the greatest respect for him (i.e., handpicked audiences chosen for loyalty).

Mrs.K8 — you can find them in the Waxman House Reform repository. I can’t get back to the Dean bit again right away; since they’re PDF files, it’s hard to locate bits. Hope someone eventually converts them to text.
TPM Muckraker has been going through them, too.

Campaign Rhetoric Won’t Fix Iraq
By Rep. Jane Harman
I was surprised to read in today’s newspaper that the President used a campaign speech yesterday to attack this 5′3″ grandmother – because I said that he got it backwards: fighting them there may make it more likely that we’ll fight them here. The President believes that the jihadist fight can be contained in Iraq. But just tell that to the people of Jakarta, Madrid, London, Amman and Mumbai – all of whom have seen massive terrorist attacks in their cities since our invasion of Iraq.
The terrorist threat is growing more dangerous. But instead of addressing it, we are playing politics with the issue, passing laws that won’t make us safer.”…………..

I think your plan has a really good chance. The way to change behaviour is to reward the desired and punish the undesired, no? Act Blue and Blue America, etc, give us the power to reward or punish candidates individually. Now, contributing directly will weaken the ability of the Dems to ‘hew to a party line’ by reducing the funds going to Central where they can be doled out by party leaders to good little Dems. But it will make candidates more accountable to, well, to us, who plebes who elect them with our $, our work and our votes. Ah, democracy! BIG caveat: This will work as long as the net is neutral… hmm.
I like sending in a few bucks to a candidate who has done something good — if lots of folks do that its a very tangible ‘attaboy’ for a statement we like, or a good vote. Like training a dog with treats…
Here’s a question that someone else may have answered earlier today, sorry for my ignorance:
How the hell did this Abramoff report end up getting released?!?
I mean, I thought this admin had the rubber-stamp criminal organization known as the GOP so thoroughly under their thumb, that the last thing that would happen would be a release of all these emails implicating so many of their crime bosses (esp Rove!) so close to November.
How did the GOP-controlled committee manage to get the huevos to release this stuff?
Off topic, but Lou Dobbs has a poll going about Bush’s secret behind the scenes efforts to create a North American Union, linky-dinky!
Yet another thing the Congress should be involved in, but isn’t.

Howie’s offered me a post at his site, and I’m working on it. Rayne, there is no DFA in “our district” (the whole state). And I can’t help but wonder if some of the resistance to Diane here and at Dean central is because she’s a former Green? Maybe not, but…?

Google makes copies of anything that is freely available on line, including image files, HTML pages, and PDF (the latter are converted to HTML). When you do a google search, typically each entry will have a file marked “Cached”. That’s their copy of the file. Here’s an example from my search for the duck fart drink:

*ilson, Cozumel — easy, we don’t know how much of that coup business is psyops.
Think about it; THEY tell us there’s a potential coup in the works, THEY tell us they need to ramp up personnel in Iraq to prevent further insurrection. THEY tell us we are continuing with “active hostilities” because of this coup threat — and Geneva Conventions says that folks can be detained until end of “active hostilities”.
And THEY will tell us they need more money, too.

ET– Getting rid of Don Young would be good for AK and the country! I am willing to help Diane Benson and will give what I can.
On the House vote today on Military Commissions the identical measure to what the Senate passed yesterday and so paving the way for its signing into law by President Bush, the Democrats who voted for the previous version but against this one were Melancon and Michaud. The other Democrats favoring torture and kangaroo courts (see #148 above) remained unchanged. The 7 Republicans who voted against both versions were the same.
What a day for the White House! Ya, they got their toruture bill but with the Woodward book, Foley, and the Abramoff/Rove items coming out, it must feel to them they are hemorrhaging from top to bottom. ET — I really doubt it’s the Green thing. There are folks in my state who are DFA members that are Libs, Greens and apostate Repugs.
It might come down to numbers, unfortunately. How many electoral votes in play? That’s why winning OH is so damned critical; believe they have 18 electoral votes, need a top-to-bottom Dem machine there if at all possible.
Here’s what I’m wondering: can you try to organize any progressives, Green-Dem-unaffiliated? Maybe you can even start a DFA there? Not hard to do.

From the Executive Summary:
Translation: This stuff is going to come out anyway in all the trials, and we want it to come out now. Waxman’s motivation is obvious. Davis’ motive is to head off lots of rumors and innuendo from flying during the election that might be even more harmful.
So, nobody knows to what we owe the great benefit of having this Abramoff report come out now? I just think it’s strange that the WH was unable to squelch this before November.
Some GOP members of the committee were OK with this coming out?
Thx in advance to anyone who understands this and can explain. It’s weird, unless there are folks in the GOP willing to undermine their corrupt members, and that’s something I had written off as a possibility a while ago.

Peterr & Mrs. K8 – I think Peterr has it. The judge has been clamping down on how much longer Kidan and Abramoff are going to be able to avoid sentencing and he moved the dates back to Oct & Nov.
So do they want things coming out on election eve – or to get ahead of them and try to bury it by Nov. – that would be my take.

I thank you again, and see I was too quick on the trigger with my second post on this.
Although I must say, Davis’ motivation is a little mushy to me — why shouldn’t he be satisfied with their being “rumors” running around, which Repubs could decry as “just” rumors, “politically motivated.”
Unless he knows that there’s *official* DoJ info coming out any moment?!?

See my #189, and also this. I think Davis is pissed at the White House for getting caught with their hands in the till and leaving him to hold back Waxman yet again. Keeping Henry in line (from the GOP point of view) has got to be a fulltime job, and if the White House is making that job harder, Davis is just going to get that much more angry about it. It’s a shot across the bow at Karl Rove, and while Davis didn’t aim the cannon, he also didn’t get in the way of the shot.
Thanks to you, too, Mary! OK, I see that makes a *little* sense, but I thought Abramoff wasn’t going off to his prison cell until November 15, *after* the election.
Does this mean that whatever the Abramoff canary sings about *before* his prison term starts will be released as public info *before November 7*?
Ach so ist das, Peterr!
Thanks muchly for your patience with my questioning! But it really DOES seem to go against the grain of their usual digging-in-their-heels and denying reality style of “governing.”
TMFH @ 202– perhaps you can tell your sweet daughter to wait until she is 21 and an intern before she decides to fall in lust with a gray haired man. If a man goes near her before then, like when she is a 16 year old page, she should scream and run away!
Do not feed the trolls. Hard as that might be.
Mrs. K8 – no, not really (unfortuntately) but the pressure is on now (although they have all managed to drag it past elections) and my guess is things were starting to dribble.
