We’ve had such unqualified success with the FDL Book Salon that we’ve decided to have a special edition Film Salon next week with our special guest and good friend Robert Greenwald, who will be chatting about his new film Iraq For Sale (you can order the DVD here).
Robert will be joining us next Wednesday, October 4, at 2pm PT/5pm ET to discuss the film. It’s an extraordinarily important work and many members of this community (including myself) donated money for its production. Robert sent me a rough cut and it should send chills up the spine of every American that this stuff is being done in our name.
Anyone who is already upset about what is happening with our new torture bill will only find themselves more angry at the YouTube above, a preview of the film regarding CACI, one of the biggest of the war profiteers. I hope you will join us for this discussion and help to keep this story on the front burner as election season goes forward. Iraq for Sale presents a good, hard look at where six years of life with George Bush has brought us, and it shows with painful clarity what happens when these people are handed the reigns to anything. I’m really looking forward to it.

I haven’t seen the rough cut, but my spine’s been shivering all week. Today feels like the first day of a long, long winter.
Well, does every hurricane have a silver lining? Joe Lieberman voted “aye” on the torture-anti-habeas corpus- pro amnesty bill. And he abandoned his party on a matter of enormous importance and principle, again. Hope Lamont hammers him on this.
Also, Bob Woodward has finally done something useful for the country, after 30 years. His new book says Bush is deliberately understating the attacks on US forces in Iraq. Wolfie quotes him as saying Bush is “hiding” the truth and “in denial.” Wolfie calls it Bush “dishonesty.” “Bush is trying to divert attention, but reality is getting in the way.”
Just as Rove/Bush want to turn the subject back to “terror,” Woodward helps us bring it back to Iraq.
Ya take what your get.
“find themselves more angry”? I don’t know if I could BE more angry. Every senator who voted for that torture bill is a war criminal.
OT — Need help, FirePups, pronto.
California, Washington state, Oregon folks specifically:
I need somebody to contact their Senator ask them point blank if S. 3930 “Military Commissions Act of 2006″ is now going to conference committee for synching with a comparable house bill, or if it is going directly to the White House.
Hurry. Please. It’s 4:30 PDT – 7:30 EDT.
Way to go, Jane. Your instincts for this stuff are top-notch, it’s awesome you got it here.
(Note: I put up a clip of the trailer so friends and family could see it, and they represent a pretty good cross-section of America, i.e., nerds, gun-nuts, liberals, weirdos, neandercons, libertarians, and my mom, who defies classification. It got more verbal response than anything else I’ve put up so far, and it looks like the material absolutely kicks ass. Of course, it’s an ass just begging to be kicked. Anyhow I think the response can be much bigger than anticipated.)
As it happens, I’ll be running into sometime commenter and FDL supporter Dead Last this weekend in L.A. after I go to the Podcast Expo. So maybe we’ll show up for the film salon together.
OT – Bob Woodward: Bush Misleads On Iraq
(CBS) Veteran Washington reporter Bob Woodward tells Mike Wallace that the Bush administration has not told the truth regarding the level of violence, especially against U.S. troops, in Iraq. He also reveals key intelligence that predicts the insurgency will grow worse next year.
snip
According to Woodward, insurgent attacks against coalition troops occur, on average, every 15 minutes, a shocking fact the administration has kept secret. “It’s getting to the point now where there are eight-, nine-hundred attacks a week. That’s more than 100 a day. That is four an hour attacking our forces,” says Woodward.

Rayne — what’s up? I thought the revised Senate bill was the House bill; the Senate had it’s own bill from its own Armed Services Committee, which was close to the original McCain/Warner/Graham “compromise” with the WH, but early this week, the Senate introduced the House version, which had been negotiated over the weekend with the WH. So I think the House and Senate have now passed the same version.
Cozumel @ 8
Bush lied. {yawn}
Ta Jane!
Having already reserved my free ticket to a local screening of Iraq For Sale, I really look forward to this session with Robert!
For those who haven’t yet got their free tickets, you can find a local screening and reserve your free ticket here: Iraq For Sale
I said a similar thing about Leiberman vote Aye on the Torturers-R-US Bill.
Bush lying about something is about as shocking as Willie Nelson getting busted for possession of marijuiana.
scarecrow — I got info from both of my Senators’ offices that contradicts that; before I beat myself senseless with comparing documents, I need this confirmed by another Senator.
4:39 PDT – 7:39 PDT. Tick-tock.
Rayne @

Did my best Rayne – Boxer & Feinstein’s SF offices were not informed & of course too late to call the DC offices. Will try again in the morning. It better not go straight to the (besmirsched White House). Agggghhh – what a ghastly day – I want my country back!
shooogarp @ 10
IMO — This is more than a yawh. This story reinforces several themes that help the Dems. (1) Bush misled the country and continues to do so; (2) Iraq situation is even worse than we thought, and we knew is was bad and making terrorism worse, and they’re still lying about it; (3) the lies are about how dangerous it is for our soldiers —
This puts Iraq right back on tomorrow’s front page, just when Bush thought he had his anti-terror bill as the lead story. And I’ll bet Woodward has more to dribble out, a little every few days — to promote his book.
This is a Brilliant idea FDL. Absolutely inspired. I myself am a voracious reader by I’m officially a member of Generation X and we are the “Movie” generation. If we see it on the big screen, it makes an impression.
I hope this becomes a regular and constant installment of FDL.
Here is another powerful trailer for Robert’s film. It shows the utterly terrifying concept of companies like Blackwater.
I’ve been following the development of this film since I first heard about it. I haven’t ordered my copy since I’m moving on Tuesday to California to work for Charlie Brown. I’ll get it then and I plan to host a showing to all the campaign staff and volunteers that want to join in.
My hat is tipped to the couragous work by Mr. Greenwald and the great work by the the staff here at FDL.
One silver lining:
On the 25th of this week Billmon was going to take a long hiatus. But now he’s BAAAAAACCCCKK!
Yes!
http://billmon.org/
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITI…..index.html
Says that the bill is nearly identical to the House version and that the House will vote on the Senate version on Friday.
The worst thing about this week is that I had an argument with my 83 yr old father last night about what issue was more important. He has been drinking the Lou Dobbs Kool-aid when I was not looking and insists that the illegal invasion is MORE important than what has been occurring this week. Had a really hard time not yelling “ARE you out of your mind?”
Mexicans coming across the border to cut lawns and work for the ReThugs cleaning their houses is more important than this?
Or the repeal of habeas Corpus or legalizing Torture?
Newspaperbrat — thanks for the effort; if you can swing it, call the DC offices first thing EDT time zone. That 3 hours could make all the difference in the world.
Washington state, Oregonians, need your help, please.
If this does go to conference committee, it may do so yet tonight.
Ah, it’s not on the weekend because the book salon is on the weekend. (Must get hole in retinal wall repaired soon.) It’s on Wednesday. I’m there!
The torture and suspend habeus corpus bill is a done deal. Bush is going to sign it tomorrow. I wonder if he’s going to wear a crown at the signing ceremony, or just go modern and have his storm troopers round up all those who opposed the bill.
Mod clean up, aisle 21, 22. Tks.
And now 24.
scarecrow. I agree with you completely. I was trying to be sarcastic. And I was also trying to convey the overall impression I have with folks in my life of many political persuasions that everybody knows Bush lies. alot.
Most of them also agree that reality is really not Bush’s speciality.
I said it earlier today. The sooner the topic focuses back on Iraq, the sooner the Dems will win back Congress, though after today it is debatable what good it will do.
Mattsmom — thanks for that bit, provides partial confirmation that there is something different between the two bills and that the conference committee may yet need to discuss the differences.
We can hammer on the House folks at this point, especially the 34 who swung the wrong way.
shooogarp — sorry, my sense of humor is a little dulled lately.
Excellent.
scarecrow @ 26
Mine has been worn down to a little itty bitty nub as well, but I’m working on sharpening it today. Gonna need it going into the election.
EVERYONE! Keep the Faith! Spirits UP!
The topic will not be allowed to focus back on Iraq. They’re currently trying to get NATO to attack “the Taliban” in Western Pakistan. That’s what Musharraf and Blair were doing here.
I have even wondered if Musharraf will be the subject of a (fake) coup. Doing so would be the perfect October Surprise, because then the nuclear missiles would be on the brink of falling into the hands of the islamofascists. Panic, crisis, chaos, election.
Rayne — I’m on townhall conference call with Congressman Carter (Texas). Any questions? I have two of my own….. but
Rayne @ 20
Boxer’s SF office just called back to report she voted nay – no other info
Cozumel @ 33
Wait ’til ol’ Wallace gets a’hold of ‘em and asks Woodward: “Why did you let bin Laden attack America?
The topic will not be allowed to focus back on Iraq.
Sure it will. Woodward is a MAJOR “get” for TV news producers. After Sunday, he’ll be on every cable news channel you click on. All Woodward, all the time : )
Rayne @ 6
Senator Feinstein contact info
Who cares! With the passage of the torture bill all of the nail biting on web sites like this means nothing. This country is ruled by and utterly corrupt regime in the Republican Party. The GOP must be absolutley crushed.
We can have no repesct for the poitics of ANYONE willing to call themself a Republican. They are mindless of anything but fear and power. To attempt reasoned discourse and bipartisanship with a Republican is like trying to reason with a child molester. They cannot hear of the wrongs they do like normal people.

I’m not sure how I did it, but I managed to read Cozumel’s mind and quote her? him? at #32.
Huh?
Somebody left an open tag poof, begone.
Oh thank god for Keith Olbermann. He is my solace that there is still a voice of reason out there in the bleak wilderness of TV journalism. (sigh)
Here are the Yays and Neys — and how Ds seats up this year were voted.
Hey Nate heard your ad for Charlie on the radio this morning – good job! I’ll send you an email L8R
Gotta go watch Keith.
How will we ever cleanse this sickness from our country’s soul?
John in Sacramento (and newspaperbrat) — (reposted from other thread) thanks, I called Boxer’s LA office; the staffer I spoke with said they thought it went to the White House. But when I asked about the House voting to approve that version tomorrow, that there were minor differences between the two bills that might require conference committee, they really didn’t know.
This is what really, DEEPLY frustrates me. If there is any potential strategy here, they should be on top of it, all over it, not be so damned uncertain where they’re at on this bill.
There is one other slim chance, but I’m not even going to mention it for fear of jinxing it. I honestly don’t know what more to do at this point.
So what’s it going to be? Time for a gut check. Are you a progressive? And are you willing to turn your back on the 46 torture supporters who label themselves Democrat?
From me: no time, no money, no votes for any of the following. And I will financially support any and all primary challengers.

Curious in Central Texas — wish I could think of something to ask, but Carter isn’t on the House Armed Services Committee, can’t ask Carter about S.3930 for this reason.
Thanks for asking, though.
Jane — thanks for this Film Salon, it’s definitely needed. I rather wondered when you’d do a Film Salon; it seemed like a natural fit.
;-)
I’ll promote it around my neck of the woods; it falls on the same night as my DFA Meetup, though, might have to pop in and out.
shooogarp @ 38
LOL
Him ; )
It’s bad enough for the D’s to cave in when they are up for election in 5 weeks. They are gutless, but at least you understand the possible calculation in their minds.
But the following D Senators voted for the torturer-amnesty and dump-habeas-corpus bill even though they are not facing Karl Rove this year.
Johnson (D-SD)
Landrieu (D-LA)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Salazar (D-CO)
Those 5 don’t even have the lame excuse of protecting their immediate flank. So what’s their excuse? That they don’t care?
Those 5 deserve primary challenges from the left in 2008 or 2010, depending on when they will be seeking reelection.
Hi,
Donation made yesterday for Marcy’s book should be enough to nudge that thermometer upward?
Thanks, and good work saving the nation.
I’m traveling the next week but will try to check in if possible.
In the meantime, Imm, hope your classes are going well. And if necessary to wear the yellow tie, we are still friends. :)
Is there still no snail mail address (like a post office box) to contribute to Marcy’s book?
It is a shame most of us of little understanding of the arguments made by the Founding Fathers when tne Constitution was framed. I am going to look for those msterials and educate myself. I would guess that most law students get some of that but it is not required in general ed. One of my favorite blogs is Jesus’ General. He has up a letter from Jefferson to Madison in 1788:
“Why suspend the habeas corpus in insurrections and rebellions? The parties who may be arrested may be charged instantly with a well defined crime; of course, the judge will remand them. If the public safety requires that the government should have a man imprisoned on less probable testimony in those than in other emergencies, let him be taken and tried, retaken and retried, while the necessity continues, only giving him redress against the government for damages. Examine the history of England. See how few of the cases of the suspension of the habeas corpus law have been worthy of that suspension. They have been either real treasons, wherein the parties might as well have been charged at once, or sham plots, where it was shameful they should ever have been suspected. Yet for the few cases wherein the suspension of the habeas corpus has done real good, that operation is now become habitual and the minds of the nation almost prepared to live under its constant suspension.”
What are we becoming?
Apologies to all about mistakenly commenting earlier that I thought that the Military Commissions Bill was part of a larger piece of legislation and so might still be stopped, probably wishful thinking on my part and difficulties I still have wading through the Thomas site.
It amazes me that the Democrats banked on just the one shot with the Specter Amendment and had no backup strategy. What were they thinking? But I already know they weren’t. Reid seems an even more ineffectual leader than Frist and that is saying something.
From the intuitive side,
I have had a burst of happiness* about what is developing. People who treasure what is good are becoming stronger as they realize the struggle is against ACTUAL EVIL, like in the Bible. Things look grim politically, but it calls out many more people who are beginning to see the depths of where our country is now.
People serving under persecution dig deep into their souls, as trees in drought send their roots ever deeper in search of water, and determine to stand against what is wrong. Our work is to illuminate what is happening so many more people will become engaged in the struggle to save our Constitutional republic.
Encourage each other, keep moving, step by step and small stone by small stone WE WILL WIN.
*burst of happiness is extremely improbable for someone with major depression. I think it is God-given. TRUTH WILL PREVAIL.
Hey Robert – I went to Netflix last week and noticed they didn’t have it. I sent them a request to buy it and when I checked today, it’s now on offer. Even better, it’s now a “short wait” to have it delivered. So I encourage everyone who has Netflix to put it in your queue.

Thanks John. I’d love to take credit for the radio ad but truth-be-told, I took the audio of that radio ad and overlayed it as the soundtrack for the video campaign commercial I produced with some of my own commentary added.

Okay. So, if “no time, no money, no votes” I guess we just roll over and hand this over now? We give up now? My congresscritter, John Barrow, is on your list. I’ll hold my nose and vote for him, and then we’ve got 2 years to get his mind right or fire him. So you want to quit now??? I’m thinking this is not the time to lie down and hold our breaths and kick and scream… We cannot do ANYTHING AT ALL if we don’t take back the Congress, and that means voting for some of these folks. Do what medical examiners do… Smear some Vicks Vapo-Rub underneath your nose, get in there, and do your job. {putting on flame-retardant suit}
Prof @ 49
Johnson, Landrieu, Lautenberg , and Rockefeller are all up for election in 2008. Personally, I was all for returning Landrieu and Salazar to the private sector already.
UPDATE: For those who might have missed it from earlier threads, here’s the official roll call for the Torture Act vote:
http://www.senate.gov/legislat…..vote=00259
New thread.
Prof @ 49
And excuse moi but past time to find primary challenges for this motley list of pro-torture dems too:
Carper, DE, Johnson, SD, Landrieu, LA, Lautenberg, NJ, Menendez, NJ, Nelson, FL, Nelson, NE, Stabenow, MI.
From this day forward I will include “pro-torture” to every mention of these names. How dare they ever ask for our trust again?
So, Joey Lieberman voted for all the amendments offered yesterday and today by Kennedy, Byrd, Specter, Rockefeller, etc., all the amendments that would have reined in the power contained in the McCain amendment, taken some of the worst parts out, sunsetted it in five years, and then, votes FOR the McCain amendment?
All I can say is that he’s got a whole lot of atoning to do before Yom Kippur…

Sharkbabe,
You have helped me so much! Probably you have saved many lives in Russia just by your energy and your dedication to the truth.
I am STILL smiling so much my face hurts. Something good is developing here among people who, up until now, were not very involved, but who are beginning to understand we are facing TRUE EVIL. These people are beginning to stand up and demand action. Our work is to shed light on what is happening and to encourage them, and of course, to encourage each other.
Still smiling! Face muscle cramps! Thank you God for optimism in the dark hours!
saw Iraq for Sale at the SF premiere event.
all I can say is wow … an emotionally powerful film.
I’d say how could congress not have war profiteering investigation, but it’s the same group who voted for torure.
get the DVD, show it to everyone you know.
thanks jane and team! looking forward to talking with all of you. keep up the great work!
