Did anyone but me snort through their nose when they saw that "Scarborough Country" graphic and the headline, "Fake News vs. Fox News"? I mean, what’s the difference? Apples, meet apples.
You know, I have disagreed with Barbara Boxer from time to time, especially in her endorsement of RG Joe back in the summer. But after this bit of hard push-back with snotty Fox anchor Jane Skinner yesterday, I’ve got to show Senator Boxer some love. Say what you will about her, the Lady clearly knows how to throw a punch.
Let’s go to the transcript, shall we?
Boxer: …and I think our policy is not helping matters at all.
Skinner: Well, as you know, the President said this morning that the offense is not going to make us less safe. Just a bit of disagreement with you. We appreciate your perspective.
Boxer: I hear that you agree with the President and I’m not surprised.
Skinner: We’re just trying to bring both sides, Senator Barbara Boxer from California.
Boxer: Oh, you’re "fair and balanced", thank you very much.
Skinner: Thank you very much indeed we are. We want to know what you think because we ARE fair and balance blah de blah diddy blah…
The best part of the whole thing (aside from watching Jane Skinner recoil like Boxer just slapped her across the face, "How DARE a US Senator backtalk ME, a FOX NEWS ANCHOR?!") was the big bright smile Boxer flashed as she signed off, which clearly said, "Oh, and you can kiss my ass in Macy’s window, ya little chippie!! And have a niiiiiiiiiice day."
Hell, yeah.
It’s time to hit back hard like that, y’all. Big Dog sounded the klaxon last weekend when he lowered the boom on that little assmonkey who tried to sandbag him. Fox News is just the RNC’s propaganda wing. It’s time we called them on it.
So tell everybody you know. Push this meme, my little Blogistas! EVERYBODY needs to make like Bill and Barbara. Any time any progressive goes on Fox News, writes emails or letters to Fox News, or even discusses Fox News with coworkers or friends, you must establish a priori that it is a fraudulent organization. Pox News, Fake and Biased! I urge you to make liberal use of air quotes. "Fair and balanced"! Let’s do it together now. Fingers up! "Fair and balanced", right? One more time, curl your lip in disgust just a liiiiiittle more…"Fair and balanced". Yeeeeeah. Feel the burn.
Think about it. Pox News is the front line in the War on Truth. They’ve been spinning a continuous line of specious Reich Wing bullshit since, oh, 1996. (Hey, wasn’t that the year that the rightards dove straight to the bottom of President Clinton’s underwear drawer and set up their whole Ken Starr trailer-park? Which, if "Path to 9/11" is to be believed, left the Clinton administration so distracted they couldn’t fight terrah?)
We have Faux News to thank for the ascendency of Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Michelle Malkin, and all (and I mean ALL) the rest of the Usual Suspects. It is without precedent (except maybe in North Korea) that an entire national media empire was founded on pushing the agenda of an elite fringe of wealthy right wing extremists.
Our national dialogue has been hijacked and flown into a building. Public perception has been warped to the right by an unremitting flood of 24-hour non-stop lies. Fox was instrumental in the run up to the War in Iraq, incestuously amplifying the Bush White House’s message all day every day seven days a week, 365 days a year. For that alone, they should all be jailhouse bitches like Judy Miller. Humiliated. Discredited. Shills.
I saw Halloween decorations at Kroger the other night and realized that it’s almost time to start thinking about the War on Christmas™ season. Already?! I know! It just seems to come earlier every year. Before you know it, we’ll be having the After War on Christmas™ sales in November!
How can we most properly thank the media cesspool that spawned Bill "T-Warrior" O’Reilly? "T-Warrior" and his homeez from Da Country Club gon’ be kickin’ some serious "S-P" bootay up in here (that’s "Secular-Progressive", ya greenhorn!), or at least that’s what I hear, y’all. ("T-Warrior" stands for "Traditional Warrior", a role it is apparently possible to maintain in life even as you sexually harass your female employees by calling them on the phone and informing them you’re masturbating with a dildo up your ass.)
Jesus, has that guy got some kind of closed head-wound action going on? Don’t be surprised when he starts carrying around a baseball bat and spouting snatches of dialogue from The Warriors, okay? YOU foisted this upon us, Fox News. And you will pay, oh, yes. You will paaaaaaaaay.
And I know exactly how it’s going to happen. In a startlingly poetic twist of fate, the Bush administration’s new Prescription Drug Plan will mean that your audience is no longer too medicated to find the remote and change the channel. You will hemorrhage viewers until there’s no one left watching but John Gibson’s hairdresser and whatever unfortunate camera operator is on duty. And that will make me so sad that I’ll laugh and laugh until I cry.

Another great post, TRex. But, I ask your indulgence in asking- how many comments until I can ask a totally totally OT question?
Nate @ 4
We have darkblack to thank for that. I emailed him this afternoon and asked, “Do you think you could turn Chris Wallace into an organ-grinder’s monkey? I think he’d be just PRECIOUS in a little bell-hop’s hat.”
Et, voila!!
great post T- i hadnt heard that about Boxer today…as i could never bring myself to turn on that odious network. we just cant say it enough- ATTACK!!!!!
Good for Boxer. I think Macy’s window is getting just a wee bit crowded these days.
I wonder when the family who owned the mailbox will step forward? They couldn’t have forgotten about it…
ah darkblack and TRex – the dynamic late nite duo – life is good!

Go for it, VG. Anything for you.
OT Jane- turns out that *ilson is doing good work in Indy exposing a wife-batterer and child-beater opponent (R)- and that’s why he’s not been around. Hoping, however, that you got my email, because *ilson has done stalwart work, and I am giving him some FDL love.

singlehandedly. not easily done, that. a whole “network”. my stars and garters!
I suppose it isn’t really OT to note here that I was subjected to about an hour of Faux’s coverage of the Bailey hostage situation this afternoon. It was abominable. Faux’s people persistently reported unconfirmed information (you know, rumors) in parallel with the few established facts, asserted that the hostage taker did have a bomb rather than that he claimed to have a bomb (still unconfirmed), that he initially fired multiple shots (not corroborated)…it was a parody of journalism. If I’d heard one more sentence on the order of “I know that this isn’t another Columbine, but…,” I think I might have tossed my last three days’ breakfasts. It was no better than tabloid reporting. Contemptible.
Some people you can win over and some people you can’t, this would be an example of when you can’t…I was walking into target this afternoon noticed that the suv (of course) I parked next to was running and a woman was sitting in the driver’s seat talking on the phone. There was also a bumper sticker on the back bumper that said “I would rather hunt with Dick Cheney than ride in a car with Ted Kennedy.” I was a little irked by this but it is the south and you can’t avoid it. When I came out of the store ONE HOUR later, the suv was still there and still running. At this point I was highly irritated and paid a little more attention to the suv…there was also another sticker that said “Imagine a world with no liberals” and the license plate said GOP 06.
#21 fahrender,
I kid you not. Here is the online clip:
Clinton ambushes Fox News
Who’s winning the domestic political war over the international war on terror — Bill Clinton, President Bush or Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton? Bill Clinton is fighting hard, for himself and his legacy, for his wife and her possible presidency. Updated: Sep. 27, 2006 2:50 AM | Full story
ecb @ 22
I can’t tell you how many times I have watched huge SUV’s pull completely pig-headed manuevers in traffic and they almost ALWAYS have a ‘W’ sticker or the equivalent on the back. Well, it’s not like we have any illusions about the personality types who still support Preznint Clusterfuck.
ecb @ 23
I’m not so sure there would be a world with no liberals. When all is said and done, the farther to the right you are, the more likely it seems to be that your only talent is for blowing shit up.
TRex @ 25
Correction: for personality “types,” substitute “disorders.”
TRex @ 25
I did see an suv one day that said “If you love America get rid of your SUV.” Could never figure out if that was a joke or not.
“Imagine No Liberals”, gawd.
That’s, like, soooooooo 2002.
ecb @ 23
I think that it was very nice and restrained of you not to have keyed her paintjob.
TRex- that is so kind of you. And this really, really totally off topic. And, a very bizarre problem. Today, I got DSL connected from BellSouth. I was so excited. And then? I can’t get FDL on DSL- says not found. So I go back to dail-up, have FDL up, read a while, and then change cables so that I am connected to DSL. I can surf FDL for a while, and then I can’t find it again. Message says, can’t find FDL. I go back and connect to dail-up. Fine. I can find FDL, and read more. And then, I can’t. Same error message. Go back to dial-up. Fine. I am now on dial-up. This is so bizarre. Already spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with a BellSouth tech person (who turned out to be in the Philipines) trying to figure out why I couldn’t get FDL on DSL (or DWT, or Atrios, etc.) Only discovered the latest “fix” if you can call it that, after we got off the phone. This is so totally frustrating and bizarre.
One nice thing about having the BellSouth guy come to install the DSL, however, is that I was able to access FDL while he was there. What kind of site is that, he said? It’s a political site. etc. etc.. I said, I’m one of those lefties who is trying to get rid of Bush… ah…. that resonated… he said- it’s gonna take years to undo what Bush has done… and, at the end, he said, so what is the name of that site again? fire dog lake I said. One word? he asked. Yep, I said. I think he might check it out. I always try to spread the word.
Does anyone have the link for the 911 movie? I had a yahoo link but it doesn’t work anymore and I can’t even think of the name of it? It featured the Jersey Girls. TIA
Anybody know if the Libby hearing was ever actually held? I looked for a Christy update but didn’t see one.
Link, but it is a pretty sad attempt.
fox dork claiming ambush
oh, TRex! thank you for the organ grinder! that is probably the first time I’ve laughed today… especially since the prospect for tomorrow is to hit the phones AGAIN and spread around some more harrassement of Senators…
AZ Matt @ 30
She was still sitting in her car or would have been much harder to show restraint. It also probably helps that I’ve been getting over a stomach bug…it did make me want to start puking all over again though.
OldCoastie @ 35
It is a great picture but which one is the monkey?
Oh, yeah, p.s. what I meant to ask is does anyone out there have some solution to my bizarre and head-banging DSL problem? I was so excited finally to have DSL, but it is turning into total frustration!!!!!
I was on the phone with a family friend yesterday (Republican) and she was asking me about the Big Dog on Fox. She’d heard about it, wanted details.
She was surprised and not negative at all – she said it was refreshing to see the Democrats start to push back.
I felt good all day afterwards.
Today, I feel tender and sad. :( I was giving hugs out all afternoon. Not for them, more for me.
ecb @ 36
Maybe you need to move to a blue state. It would be better for both your stomach and mind.
Valley Girl @ 38
I’m no big expert, but it sounds like you are dropping your connection… you on a Mac?
Never had a with BellSouth DSL and FDL, but I have moved to TWC some time back, so it may be a new problem.

Okay, were you able to access any other web sites or just not FDL?
What kind of computer are you using?
What OS?
There was a short article in my paper today discussing current negative campaign ads.
The part that popped my dorsal fin up was the part saying Democrats were surprised by how far back and how obscure some of the facts in the ads against them were. Editorials written for campus newspapers (If we’re going to hold the past against politicians, let us start with the Codpiece in Chief), defaulting on student loans, personal bankruptcies – just some of the mud being flung.
Guess having Choicepoint as part of the GWOT and having No Such Agency doing yer domestic spying is paying off.
VG, do you think that it is like the problem when FDL switched over to its own dot com site? I think I remember the solution was to flush your cache or something… I’m no techie but I think it had something to do with the way your ISP goes to the site and your computer’s cache is still set to the “old way” instead of the new DSL way.
Of course, I could be totally wrong here, and I am no techie.
Oops, meant:
Never had a problem with Bellsouth DSL and FDL.
As for dropping modem connection, I think you would know as you would get nothing from anywhere.
Are you using a single computer USB type modem or a ethernet type network modem?
Either way sometimes you DO have to set for “keep alive” on a DSL line.
Valley Girl @ 31
I wouldn’t put it past Bellsouth to some creative editing on thier DNS servers. Afterall they do have a prospective merger coming up. Got to keep the GOP happy if they want it to go smoothly. Speaking of which, one or maybe two more mergers and we’ll have Ma Bell back.
TRex @ 25

Nah, I use Bellsouth DSL at home and it has never attempted to block my access to any content.
AZ Matt @ 40
As much as I would like to this is home and I love it. Also, I still haven’t quite given up yet. Some days are pretty depressing, but others I help yet another MS “Republican” realize that they are actually a Dem. I pick and choose my battles. Most people actually are better aligned with the Dem point of view and just vote Republican because they don’t know any better…some people tell you, “Well I may not agree with all of Bush’s policies, but I still think he is the sexiest man alive.” And yes this is an actual quote from a girl I work with. I wasn’t sick at the time, but I almost got that way. However, I have seen some of the guys she dates and Bush actually is more attractive (scary I know).
ecb @ 8:30 pm (#23)
With those risk assessment skills, it’s no wonder those folks are so freaked out by terrorism.
OT, but I’ve got to ask. Is there technically any way that a senator or group thereof filibuster or in any other way still derail this goddamn torture bill?
Some folks insist that because of the “unanimous consent …”, it is all over. Is that true?
Thanks

OldCoastie- no, I am on a PC. However, I was wondering about the connection problem. There are four levels of access speed available via BellSouth, and chose “level 2″ which is 10x faster than DSL “lite”. The installer today said that probably all I could get in my area was level 2 (of 4 speeds) because I am in an “historic area” where it has not been possible to build a high-power substation, and connections have to come from another place, somewhat distant- and thus higher speed connections aren’t possible in my area. What you say about the connection being dropped does make sense. ( Or, maybe the DSL modem is faulty?) So, I am wondering if I have to go to DSL “lite”- less stress on the tubz, so to speak. Hope this makes sense.
ecb @ 51,
If memory serves me right, you got Trent Lott as a Senator. Has he rebuilt his house on the Gulf yet for Bush to come and sit on his porch?

I saw a LOT of pearl-clutching, Verklemmt, fainting-couch victims as live-blogging occured today on the Torture Bill. On our blog. From newbies -and- regulars.
My concern is that we are not doing a good job promoting the fact that we are in a lifetime war. This is not a battle against the horror-de-jeur. The f’ing Republican Party is the MAJORITY, people. They are going to, and should be expected to, pass a bill here and there.
That doesn’t mean we have to like it. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t protest it loudly after the fact. It does NOT mean that all Democrat congresspeople are traitors because a majority passed a bill based on majority rules.
We all (me too) think we are smarter than 100 Senators and however many House members there are. But they are there for a reason and we are not for another reason.
Breaking News! If you are not part of the solution, etc.
If something bad happens, figure out why and fight to prevent it in the future. If something good happens, commend the people that made it so and go back to the fight.
Maybe we need a list of the victories we’ve had over the last 2 years. I can’t put it together; any volunteers?
Please people, think long term. I don’t know how many taunting posts we got from Rethugs today delighting in our PANIC. But they were moderated, which is normally a good thing. In this case however, I almost think that being forced to read them would have been a good thing.
Lakers? Lakers? The right was laughing at us today because we were freaking out. Mods, can you confirm?
Let’s Roll.
Even if you don’t laud everything Boxer does, taking the fight to any opponent deserves praise. I don’t think any amount hard pedaling and harsh words will be taken negatively by the public in these times.
Republicans aren’t fighting, they’re hoping no one calls them out too loudly for doing nothing! They have Rumsfeld who won’t be questioned by anyone about his failures or accountability while Democrats have highly decorated officers from various branches of the military willing to pour out their insight in a Democratic oversight meeting on policy. The lines of communication and leadership offering to promote a meaningful change in Iraq are talking to the Democrats.
When you are right and have the brass to back it up, punch them in the mouth, repeatedly !

I’m trying to imagine the monkey-house shrieking and feces-throwing that there would have been on Fox, had there been a revelation that a man-whore–gay man-whore!–had been prowling around the Clinton White House. Man, they would have had to add more hours to the day just to cover it all. We’d be using 27 hour days now because of that.
That same girl goes to “YUPs” (Young Upcoming Professionals) meetings. My response, “Is that like Yuppies in training?” I have to admit I already knew that it was, but it was fun to see her reaction.

And, I just want to highlight, that amidst the DSL mess, it was really really encouraging that the guy who came to install (and the problems I discovered later were probably not his fault) was totally on board with the “Bush has done damage” meme. And, that I pointed him to FDL. Word’s out, in this very Red State!

yes, i understand. I didn’t think you were kidding……..
VG at 56:
A “connection lost” problem is usually bad wiring, and I don’t think that is what your symptoms are indicating.
If you want to try a couple things when you have the problem with getting to FDL, do this:
1. Click on the Start button of Windows.
2. Click on Run.
3. When the Run dialog box comes up, enter CMD and press the enter key.
4. This will open a DOS Command prompt window.
5. At the prompt in the DOS window, type in “ping http://www.firedoglake.com” (without the quotes) and press the enter key.
If you do this when you are having problems accessing FDL, the resultant output will show us a couple of things:
A. Whether you can ping the FDL website across the Internet (i.e. find it and contact it)
B. What kind of response time it takes to travel across the Internet to the FDL site and back to your PC.
You can even do this right now without waiting for that FDL problem to occur.

VG – I don’t know… I do a lot more Mac and haven’t worked on PC’s for a couple years… I almost wonder if you are timing out on the smaller sites… you know what I’d try? sometimes dsl can get a little flakey when there are lots of users on the same “circuit”… I’d try at some odd hour – very early a.m. maybe
other than that, I don’t know what to tell you – keep fussing at your provider – they may need to figure out how to get your more bandwidth or something (don’t offer to pay for it – see if they will pony it up)
Valley Girl @

Hi Valley Girl -
This fault sure sounds like a problem with the DNS (domain name servers). The DNS translates our word-based url’s (like “firedoglake [dot] com”) into numerical unique internet addresses.
When changing net feeds (or even switching among them) the DNS info and/or settings may be a problem.
The most common problem I’ve seen when changing net feeds (epecially if changing net providers) is an error in the specific DNS location. Different net providers have different numerical addresses for their DNS servers. [example: My long-time net provider was UCLA. When I traveled out of the LA area and used other net providers, I got DNS errors unil I updated my settings for the specific DNS servers used by the non-UCLA providers.
I’m an apple head, but came from the dark side, so I may remember the DNS settings on windows: I think the TCP/IP settings (a subset of internet settigs) contain the DNS setting box.
Your DSL provider will (or should) have a specific numerical address for their own DNS server(s). It will take the form of a string of numerals with interspersed periods – about four groups of numerals if I recall correctly..)
You can enter the DNS server address (or addresses) in the box labelled (I think) with the creative tag “DNS servers” on the TCP/IP setings page.
If the settings page eludes you, putting “TCP/IP” in the help text box may lead to the right place. On the other hand, this is Microsoft, so it may not.
Good luck – hope this helps – srry for typos!
VG- it sounds like you are having domain name server issues (they resolve the name of the site to the number of the server it’s on)
try this:
start- settings – network connections
click on the local area connection
click properties
highlight Internet Protocol (tcp/ip) and click the properties button
at the bottom, check “use the following DNS server address”
put this number in the box: 192.168.0.1
then click okay all the way out….
that server works for me!
hat tip to mr.JB for walking me thru this.
Valley Girl @ 8:37 pm (#31)
The only thing more difficult to do than diagnose a problem that you know a little bit about by phone from the Phillipines is to try to diagnose a problem you know nothing about from the Internet, but here goes …
It’s possible you need to use different DNS servers from the DSL than you use from the modem. Do you have DNS servers predefined on your system (IOW, you’re not letting DHCP provide them)? If so, you might want to try removing those DNS servers from your configuration, and then restart the interface. If you’re using Windows it’s quite possible that Bell South has a help page that explains what to do.
UPDATE: Check kirk murphy’s comment above for a more thorough explanation of all this.
JackieBlue @ 85
Uh, no.
192.168.0.1 is a reserved IP address which is not routable over the Internet, therefore you will not be able to resolve your domain names to IP addresses, hence not…
Oh, never mind. Free tech support if you email judd.brown at comcast dot net.

VG- even better:
Bell South DNS server instructions
they suggest using “obtain dns server automatically” but have a list of specific IP addresses too…
Good Luck!
Balrog @ 87
Valley Girl: Actually, if that’s what was working before, you are probably using some sort of firewall. It is acting as a local DNS server. What you need to do, if that’s the case, may be to reprogram your firewall.
It sounds, though, as if you are connecting directly to the Internet with your PC. In that case, Balrog is correct, that’s not going to help.
at least until they start getting the $4 generics from MallWart (convenient timing that, just before the election and when the donut hole of Medicare D kicks in)
ecb @ 88
ECB, you will be doing all of us a HUGE favor. As always, great thanks.
In fact, let’s all start reporting in as to what we’ve done today to further our goal.
Balrog took a beating for trying to fire everyone up last week. Well here is your chance to really show him how wrong he was. If everyone posts a positive thing they did today, and every day, others will have a chance to copy those things and we will really roll.
This is NOT a busting. This is a brain-dump that all of us can use to either add to or copy from to further our cause.
JackieBlue @ 90
That’s what I’m talking about!
Seriously, those look like the instructions you need if your PC is connected directly to the Internet (IOW, your DSL modem).
drouse @ 90
No, the 192.168.x.x address likely referred to her internal cable modem or broadband router. It won’t work for anyone else.

I need to tell you all how much I enjoy LateNite here–TRex and everyone. It brings some sunshine after all the gloomy news. (Yes, I’m one of THOSE lurkers!) FDL has incredibly good writers, and they are ALL on target and precise. And the snark is A-0K too!

It came up briefly in an earlier thread, but nobody made much of it. In fact, if GWoT is legal war, then we’ve got enemy troops on our soil, in which case certain constitutional guarantees are suspended. Slick.
Balrog @ 94
Hi, I’m Balrog, and I got freaked out by the news today that a nasty bill was going forward.
I feel awful. To repent, I offer the following.
Until the elections, I will help any FDL’er with PC related questions. Please post in response to me and I will assist no matter the issue.
I don’t guarantee satisfaction, but I will try to help you.
Cost is $5 to an ActBlue candidate and a Go FDL post.

Plenty of room here at the Lake and the water does indeed have mystical properties. *g*
Today I called Diane Feinstein’s office, stated my position and said that Senator Feinstein should do anything necessary to stop and block the bill…
I almost included that if she needed to strip naked and fling herself on the floor of the Senate to slow the vote, then so be it.
But then I thought they might not take me seriously… ;-)

Oy! Sorry it has take me so long to get back to you. When I first read your comment I *did* have DSL connection, and the ping came back fine, delay short ~90 ms. I spent a long time trying to figure out how to copy the DOS page w/o success. By the time that I got around to trying to reply to your comment, the DSL was no longer working. I tried the same run/CMD thing as before, and it came back with a message that fdl could not be found. So, now I am posting from dial-up. And, I see that there are other newer comments, but I haven’t read these yet, all.

VG:
Is it just FDL, or is it other sites, too? Usually if the DSL is messed up, it affects other hard-loading pages as well. Try–heck, Amazon? Ebay? Sites like those with lots of graphics and lots of traffic. That will give you an idea if the problem is the DSL connection itself. Oh–and look at your modem. The “DSL” light should be on constantly, not flickering. If it’s flickering, ya got a problem with your connection. Otherwise, the connection is A-OK.
Sometimes with DSL, you need to turn your modem on and off a couple of times. If you’re using a router, too, do the same with it simultaneously.
It doesn’t sound like connectivity is your problem, though. Someone mentioned clearing your cache/history, and that can be a good place to start. Did you need to install software for your new modem? Since you’re on PC, look for some conflicts from the drivers for your new modem. I’d try re-installing the new software, and removing the software for the old modem. Yeah, back up the old, but take it off completely for now. Y’all got something to clean-erase a program over in Windoze? You want to make sure no drivers or registries or whatever from the old modem are in there funking things up.
That’s what I can think of, off the top of my head…

I think you succeeded! You recognized a pattern and provided a solution. After additional data were made available, you found a very helpful and precise resource to solve the identified problem.

Okay, I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to make this project work, and this is what I have determined. Every weekend I’ll go through as many posts as I can and find the ones where people said what they did that day, starting with the present and working my back over time. It’s going to take a while and I’m sure that it will evolve over time, but that is what I’m starting with.
I do have one qeustion though: What do I do with all of this once I’ve got it?
Also, everyone tell me what you did today to try to make a difference.
Dang–others mentioned the DNS servers, and that occurred to me just when I finished my post…

ecb – here are some thought for The Balrog List . . .
Try to break it down into related chunks, and the ideas will come.
One big category is “holding the media accountable” – this includes big stories like the Path to 9-11 and the various Wilson/Plame reporter (Steno Sue, Judy Miller, etc.) as well as smaller ones like the flap with the WaPo ombudsman and editors re Dan Froomkin and correcting their own errors.
Another category is “holding politicians accountable” – both Dems and Republicans, and both big and small stories fit here. Bolton’s confirmation, RG Joe’s comments about the short ride, Ned Lamont’s fight for the democratic nomination, and more.
A third category is “shaping the progressive message” – think BlueAmerica, Roots Project and the Rubber Stamps, and pushing Crashing the Gates. Think YouTube, “Had Enough?” songs/ads, and the online brainstorming for hundreds of Letters to the Editor. Every time someone has read a great comment and said “Oh, I like that – can I borrow it for a letter” – that’s what I’m talking about.
A fourth category, and more difficult to define or quantify, is the building of this specific community. The connections forged here over shared humor (the nightly snark, darkblack’s art, and the millions of puns), shared grief (the death of Jane’s mom, Hopespringsaturtle’s reports from Germany, egregious’ reports from Russia, and others who have wrestled with personal issues online), shared food (Pull Up a Chair), shared Music (Donita’s Spin), shared movies/books, . . . all this makes it possible for us to disagree with one another and take on the messes that we see in the world. We have shown each other that we are not alone in trying to work for change – in our own lives and in the political world at large.
Folks, this is just a start, off the top of my head and by no means hitting even all the high points. It could be quite a list . . . and an ongoing one at that.

I don’t think the logic works, to be honest, because the logical conclusion is that the “detainees” are then prisoners of war and are covered by both the Geneva conventions and any treaty obligations we have. They don’t want that, either.
Maybe this would work. The odds are that the next president will probably be a Democrat. And the front runner right now is probably Hiliary. And Hiliary is known to carry some powerful grudges against the right-wing conspiracy. So you can bet your red-state ass that she will be supporting any bill that give her power to arbitrarily declare people to be enemy combatants and lock them up and torture them. She well known to be that kind of person. So go ahead and support that torture bill.
Greetings All,
Not my usual de-lurking time, but have big deadline on Friday and am up late trying to finish proposals.
Wanted to thank many of the regulars (and the moderators) for helping to bring reason back into the conversations today. For many of us, the torture bill was more than we could handle, morally, ethically, psychically. Balrog, I was clutching my pearls [they go so well with my twin sets]. Ever since the deal was done last week between St. McCain, Huckleberry, and Mr. Liz Taylor, I have been aghast at what is happening.
Some folks this afternoon wrote about how this was all just an election ploy, sorta “strong on defense, fightin’ the war on terra” divide the Dems. But Mr. NJ Progressive, who is a policy wonk, thinks that’s giving the Repubs too much credit. They are doing this because they are authoritarians, who want to give the President as much power as he wants.
Lots of folks were saying this was the dealbreaker for them vis-a-vis supporting Dems, but cooler heads helped many of us see that this is just one more battle. It’s a painful one to lose. But we can’t catastrophize: it’s not the end of the American ideal. Americans owned slaves, Americans incarcerated people of Japanese ancestry in gulags during WWII, the McCarthy era used the power of the media to ruin livelihoods and lives. There has been corrupt and power-hungry leaders before, and there will be again after us. The ideals still matter, even if our nation seems incapable of living up to them. We still share them and will share them with others.
Now on to my important question: T-Rex, what school supplies were you recommending? I’m a fountain pen user, too, tho’ I just have an inexpensive old Schaefer, that I customized with an emery board for this left-hander. Used to do lots of calligraphy in my younger days. I know there’s someone who comments here at the ‘Lake who does calligraphy professionally–and I am totally in awe of that skill and artistry.
VG at 111:
In case you need to do that in future, you can accomplish this by:
1. At the very top left corner of the DOS Command prompt window, right click on the tiny little black C: icon.
2. You’ll get a menu pulldown.
3. On the menu pulldown, click on Edit->Mark.
4. You should then have a blinking block cursor inside the DOS Command prompt window (at the very top).
5. You can then just right click and hold down your mouse button and drag your way accross and down all of the text that you want to copy.
6. When you’ve got all that you want, you can just hit your enter key. That will copy the info to the clipboard.
7. Then you can just paste that info here in the Comment window to show us what you are seeing on your system.
Btw, when you do that ping of FDL and are having the problem, also try pinging another site like http://www.yahoo.com or http://www.google.com.
This will let you know that you either do or don’t have a sustainable Internet connection to some other sites while the FDL site is not accessible.
And based on the comments here, we got lots of techie folks who can try to help!
Frank Probst @ 121
I think you’re entirely correct, but I don’t expect little things like consistency or logic to affect this administration’s decisions. Remember, they’re creating reality…and it hasn’t bothered them yet if they create a reality that is a legal house of cards.

About a year ago I was going through a parking lot in front of a motorcycle dealership (not Harleys but something like them) and I see this shiny blue late model 4 wheel drive Ford pickup with a 6 inch lift, those shiny glittery mudflaps with the picture of the breast enhanced girl, one of those long cb antennas (you’ve seen them), aaaaaannnnnnd on the shiny polished bumper, a bumper sticker that says something like …
“Bring on the Rapture, God Will Sort us out”
Not exactly, but something similar
I really need someone to read this post I wrote. Yes, that sounds kinda pathetic, but it’s been a kinda pathetic sort of night. I was feeling under the weather and really didn’t feel like going to this event when the time came, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t. After all, it *is* important to keep an eye on the encroaching theocracy movement in Ohio.
As reward for dragging myself out of the house, I got to sit in the worst traffic I’ve ever experienced in central Ohio, utterly trapped with no way out of it, watching the clock tick away the amount of the program I was missing.
And then when I got home and decided to do just a quick post about the event, it took a full *hour* to post because Blogger is so screwed up at the moment. Anyway, I’d really like to go to bed feeling like the effort was slightly worth my while…

An additional view is that the Repugs mad rush to get this Torture Bill passed (and others like the “It’s OK to wiretap folks in the US without a warrant” bill) is a sign of their desperation at what their own internal poll numbers are showing.
Namely that they are not going to be controlling Congress after the November votes, and that they had best try to cover up as much of their crimes as possible, as well as giving their own spawn “Get Out of Jail Free” cards.
I’ve never accepted the idea that these bills are what they purport to be, and are what the MSM reports them to be.
On the surface, they are about Torture or FISA.
But under the covers, these were merely vehicles to be used to pass legislation that allows “Criminals to Pardon Themselves”.
Time is running out for the Repugs, so the last thing they need to do before we takeover is make sure they all don’t got to jail.

Now if somebody (TRex?) could creat a front page post with all of that NYT editorial, I think you could get hundreds of us, maybe thousands of us to Spotlight it all over the MSM.

Whaddya think?
Not that you can actually give yourself a nickname – only true losers do that. And I’m surprised he didn’t go with Maverick.
But only a moronic loser would give himself the nickname T-Warrior.
How do I know he’s a MORONIC loser? Actually, I didn’t need my omniscience.
The first time I read it, I said to myself: “Self, what kind of moron would give themselves a nickname only Elmer Fudd could pronounce – Twarrior.
And then, I had this Elmer Fudd voice stuck in my head screaming “Twarriors, come out and play ee ay.”
And once I got that out of my head – which took a while – I said to myself “Self, he’s not just some pretend populist blowhard out for a quick buck, he really is a MORON.
And then I slept soundly.

Sorry for repeating my previous posting-I thought it did not
go through the tubes. But I did find a new juicy scandal.
Republican Jeanne Pirro is under investigation for spying
on her husband.
According to http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/
“Now she’s under federal investigation for plotting –
with onetime NYPD chief, former Iraq security head,
would-be DHS secretary and crook Bernard Kerik –
to illegally spy on her own husband.
Pirro says, “What am I supposed to do, Bernie?
Watch him f–k her every night? What am I supposed to do?…
I can go on the boat, I’ll put the f—–g thing on myself.”
Minutes later, Kerik apparently calls a contact at Giuliani
Partners, former mayor Rudy Giuliani’s consulting firm,
asking him to find a recording device…”
Giuliani Partners also employs Richard Sheirer, head of World Trade Center
Office of Emergency Management, which Sheirer abandoned in building 7
on 9/11 before before the first WTC tower collapsed at 10:03 am.
Building 7 containing OEM collapsed, hours later almost undamaged.
I guess GiulianiPartners supplies angry Republican wives
with spy equipment.
I wondered what they did.
I think tomorrow we turn up the volume, keep up the pressure… every hour that goes by produces another editorial…with a little luck, by Friday, the noise will be thunderous…
when I called DiFi’s office earlier today, the line wasn’t busy, but the “operators” were… there wasn’t one word on the evening news, but people are calling and they are mad…
you just never know what might turn this… maybe even the repugs will see the folly in all this…

UPDATE: Wow, mob accessory and crazy lady. Quite a couple.
I’m not very optimistic, TRex… but every once in awhile, some serendipidous, crazy thing happens because the water has been turned up to “boil”… the phone calls cost us hope, but not much else… I sure don’t want to be standing there, with my hands shoved down in my pockets, looking at the ground…

UPDATE from the DSL front-
Thanks to everyone for trying to help me solve my DSL problems. Since I last posted, I have not been slacking off. I have tried numerous things, based on your ideas. Thanks, FDL community!!!!
However, it looks like I can’t even get DSL now, so I am now posting from dial-up, which thankfully, still works. So, the nice person in tech at BellSouth in the Phillipines will have to spend another few hours with me tomorrow eve, when we have a pre-arranged call.
If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would say that Bush has fucked this all up, and *someone* has been watching my activities at FDL.
Again, thank you all, especially TRex, for allowing me to indulge in this totally OT topic.
xxxxxoooo VG
I was on break today, and mentioned the legislation before the senate. One woman said she supported the president. I asked if she supported torture. She said she supported any means against terrorists. I asked about habeas corpus…she said lincoln gutted that in the 1800’s. What can you say to something like that?
TRex @
165
Hey TR. Don’t worry; you were cool. But I must say that I’m with OC on this one.
Tomorrow is the day, and minutes and hours will count. Pressure is mounting and the NYT editorial just might be the tipping point. So far as I know, we only need to hold off a vote for roughly 48 hours. Of course, they would launch a counter attack during a lame duck session after the elections, but by then a climate of opinion will have formed against them.
The thing that worries me is that I still don’t understand the significance of that “unanimous consent schedule” or whatever it’s called.
yup, TRex… keeping writing! (love your writing)
all right, jammie time… my kids are doing great in the computer lab – I’m really tickled with how much they remember from last year, but I’m a little baffled as to why they think I own a half dozen dogs or so – specially since I only have 2… (I suspect it is the series of progressively growing puppy pictures that I toss up on the tv as a slide show)… they so funny!

You know if there was ever a moment in American history that a fillibuster was called for, this would be it. History will be made or lost on this issue. Which is why I can’t think too hard about it. I think about the message that this sends to the world.
I still think all the Dems marching into the senate in the buff in a “the emporer has no clothes” kinda of protest would at least get some tv coverage…

I’m pretty sure that by “public Safety” they probably meant riots and such.
http://www.constitutioncenter……ndex.shtml
OldCoastie @ 166
And like OC, I too didn’t take it as mean.
With all the anguish that poured out in the threads earlier today, I must say that I was not distressed one bit.
That was because I had the luxury of entire night and day of contemplating Glenn Greenwald’s wise advice last night.
Paraphrasing it, he too was upset about the fact that the Repugs were going to last-chance shove their Torture Bill through.
Glenn’s advice was to take a few deep breaths, a walk around the block, kiss the partner and kids, and then focus on the real goal here.
As I said in my comments a few above this one, if you take a step back you may find that what the Repugs have done is one of their final acts of desperation.
They are fraught with fear!!! They are going down!!! And they know it!!!
They are doing anything they can to buy cover, but they do indeed know that we are going to remove them from power!
Yes, a shameful day for all of the good people in this nation. But take heart, all is not darkness.

Well, I am awfully unhappy with the way this torture thing has gone. Why didn’t the Democrats filibuster? Have no Republicans whatsoever–”moderate” would be too strong a word–at long last, any decency?
Why did the only Democratic congressman from my state–who lives in a very marginal district, and all, but who I thought was still a human being–vote for this abomination?
Do I understand correctly that Sherrod Brown, whom I have given money to and spoken to here on Blue America, and whom I could swear told me he is against Bush’s unconstitutional theory of unlimited executive power, voted for this horseshit? (I want my money back).

Sadly, I don’t think a couple of editorials will change the opinion of the truly skeerd in the Senate. They’re going to give Little Lord Fauntleroy what he wants because they think it will ensure their continued taxpayer-funded gravy train.
God himself (herself, itself?) won’t be able to convince these people to do the right thing. The only thing that will convince the Dem Bush toadies to do the right thing is the threat of complete impoverishment and relegation to jobs befitting their skills… garbage collection, loan sharking and sewer inspection.
Hm. Guess that just leaves me.

Good morning, OS! How things are good up there in cranberry country?
It’s really cooling off down here at night, but still balmy during the day. The missus and I harvested 30 pounds of sweet potatoes on Sunday. We peeled, cubed, boiled and mashed for three hours. We now have enough in the freezer to get us through the winter.
I do wish we’d canned more green beans, but we have lots of pickles, peaches, tomatoes and venison. More venison to come- the season hasn’t even begun here yet.
I am also hoping to catch a big share of fish before winter comes on and they stop biting. (Note to self: go fishing…)
How’s with you? I will hopefully read your answers when I get to work in the morning.
Fox News: We distort, you recite.
Good on Sen. Boxer. She’s been great before, so I’m willing to forgive her (early, less than enthusiastic) support for Lieberman. I suspect Holy Joe of either calling in a lot of favors or playing the vote-for-me-or-Israel-gets-pushed-into-the-sea card on as many of his fellow Dems as he could. (An especially toxic maneuver now that the neocons are pushing their pan-global bloodbath of a policy as the One True Way to support Israel. With support like that…)
Okay, this is off topic, but I was just reading downstairs the words of the bill passed by the House today. You know what I’ve been thinking about all day? I’ve been trying to figure out what the difference is between this torture bill and how China and the Soviet Union and Cuba have behaved. Remember how quaint it was for us, esp. the Rs, to condemn them? Now we emulate them. I guess the biggest and only difference is that they didn’t have to bother to write it down and vote on it; they just implemented it.
God, the supreme court is so full of such pussies, demanding that we write it down.
When it is all said and done, there won’t be a dime’s worth of difference between us and China, us and the Soviet Union, us and Cuba. Who knows, maybe that is even the goal.
Evening Firedogs! When you can’t figure out where to go next, look to the stars!…that said, we have some astrological-y piss poor days ahead for the organ grinder along with Josh Bolton and Senior Wences Cheney starting NOW and stopping in June 07. Bush will be hated by election time when the Dems take the house & senate (in spite of themselves) AND Condi will have a Saturn opposition to her Sun, Mercury and MC starting very shortly…she is looking at a lot of trouble with that. So fear not, transformation is in the air with Pluto, the great transformer ruling the airwaves during the election. Torturers need not apply. In Fact, all things “torture” will be looked upon by american voters as very bad. So spread the ‘torture’ word every where you go.

Ah, figs! Thinking of figs and walnuts are among the few things which get me to miss my short residence in California. Long ago.
Picked the artichokes last weekend. First time I’ve grown them in Alaska. Friday, the portable greenhouse goes down with the tomatoes and cukes inside, plus I’ll harvest the last of the basil in the foundation greenhouse. I’m keeping the carrots and cabbage growing until it looks like a real frost will happen the next night. So far we’ve had three light frosts, but they haven’t nipped any plants.
The broccoli and the cilantro and arugula for seed will stay in the ground into the hard frost.

I have tried various warming cloths. Mostly to quicken the early part of our season. We also do portable frames and raised beds. Everyy year I try more experiments. Hence artichokes, which worked better than some of the others – corn, fava beans, peppers (which won several state fair ribbons in 2002 and 2003, but have gotten mites and aphids the past three years!). The other experiments this year were napa cabbage, burdock root and shiso. All three worked great.

From The Free World Colossus by David Horowitz written/published in 1965: “The coup in Czechoslovakia strengthened the hand of every die-hard anti-Bolshevik and extreme Nationalist in the Western camp. In the wake of this event, the liberal-left entered into an alliance with the reactionary right from which neither it nor the Western World has recovered.”

There you are, thanks for your blessings OS. Morning.
I think we need one of those hooded figures standing on a box in front of HIS office, Susan. That guy gets no more of my votes–unless his opponent is worse. However, he WILL get a strongly worded letter from me, hand written and illustrated!!! What was he thinking? Nothing like a year in DC to twist someone’s principles into a knot!!!!!!!!!!
I never read that Horowitz book back in the day, but recently read Overthrow by Stephen Kinzer and my DH said go back to the sources and pulled a few books off his shelf from his years at Harvard where in 1970, a class about the US behaviour was on the curriculum. I am blown away!!! The more things change, the more they stay the same. The guy has the information organized in a manner that makes sense to me!! What a pity. There is such potential in thes country.
And “They” have sure managed to spin the myth about this nation’s benevolence in the public eye while behaving in most reprehensible ways behind the screen.
OS and imm,
It’s surprisingly easy to be downhearted. There isn’t anything that the Republicans Radicals can do to our laws that can’t be undone [except for that little get out of jail free card they’re issuing themselves]. We will even regaining the decent respect of other nations when these Radicals are booted out, and a Democratic administration, together with a Democratic Congress work to clean up the ordure left behind, and extend America’s good will once again.
I teach a beginner knitting class at my local Y, and every class I teach I tell my students “there is anything in knitting that can’t be undone.” Mistakes happen, even to the most experienced knitter. You get distracted, you mis-count, you purl instead of knit, you cable front instead of cable back. Whatever it is, you can undo it. Even if the yarn breaks, you can join a new piece. Just don’t panic. Calmly, carefully figure out what’s wrong, and start making it right.
That will work for America, too. Calmly, carefully figure out what’s wrong, and start making it right.
You’re right, but he was always problematic for me.
His equivication on choice, and in general his record has not been great.
I wish I could physically hang out with the pups today. I’m shaking in my core. I need to do some meditation or tai chi to calm down.
But now it’s off to get the kids to school.
See ya.
Preview is your friend.
It should read:
“there isn’t anything in knitting that can’t be undone.”
Thanks njprogressive, the beginning of calm.
Another idiotic comment by Fox leadership which simply proves Mr Clinton’s point! Clinton merely responded in a strong, forthright, and honest fashion. Thank goodness the Dems are being given a role model at last!
Beardy, (The grim reaper is our ultimate friend wrt some of those in DC. If I believed in an afterlife that in anyway resembles this one, I’d think there’d be payback, and in the Buddhist world, the Bardo is pretty bad too–but I believe they ought to be held accountable and punished in this time.)
I agree that there’s nothing that can’t be undone except for the real things that their paper behaviour engenders, like death, destruction, mutilation, pollution, fear mongering–stop me, oh my lax discipline. Still, all the efforts that will have to go into undoing, would far better be spent on making progress!! This crew in DC is so smarmy and sanctimonious.
I’d like to see them all standing or sitting, hooded or better, unhooded having to listen to people walk by day after day after day giving them a piece of their minds for the rest of their lives.
That said, what do we do TODAY?
Calm yes, Susan, but I am not underestimating how much work there is to clean out these Augean stables. There’s an awful mess in DC, and around the world. We can do it, if everyone pitches in. Got your shovels ready?
I have been experiencing these kinds of direct assaults on liberty for most of my career — most notably from 1992 from the Powell Commission report through the passage in 1996 of AEDPA (Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act).
What happened is just an unfortunate continuation of the spirit of that legislation. The difference is that the internet and places like this give us much more information and power. At the very least, these bills can no longer be passed in relative media darkness. (I mean how many of you remember the big AEDPA signing where all citizens’ rights to Habeas Corpus were drastically curtailed? But you all will remember yesterday.)
So, as angry as I am — I am also seeing how much improved things are.
OS at 286 and beard — As a tax teaching friend of mine reminded me, “You can’t repeal the actuarial tables.”
Good morning Folks! I’ve got the coffee brewing, and the sink is clean. While doing the dishes I saw the pair of herons sweep up the river. Such glorious birds, they fly no higher than they need to so that means I’m viewing them from above as they go upstream.

OS, CALL ….
ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTAAAAACK!!
I’m sending out a group email to BH Dems, encouraging them all to call Snowe and Collins.
We need some courageous senators to filibuster this thing.
Now , I really have to go.
Off to the trenches!
What’s happening on the torture debate? Do we have a head count in the Senate yet? I know there was unanimous consent for a set period of debate. Has the vote been scheduled?
We can call the offices of Senators and Representatives who spoke with passion about what is moral and ethical, and what is beyond the pale for Americans–torture–and tell them we are proud of them, and urge them to continue fighting against this stinking proposal.
We can call the offices of those Democrats in the House who voted for torture, and express our deepest disappointment. We can tell them that they have lost our respect, and we will be looking for good people to run against them in 2008.
We can write letters to the editor [some of us with fountain pens, as well as laptops *g*] to voice our feelings of dismay at the latest assault on American values led by the Radical Republicans. For those newspapers who have published ringing denunciations of this travesty, we can write thank you letters.
Today, I expect that this awful bill with pass the Senate. To the Republican Radicals, I say what will frighten them most: “now imagine a Democratic administration with these powers–what will you do then?”
This administration keeps confirming my opinion that Americans elect republican administration, only to elect a Democrat to clean up the mess.
Carter tried to prune back the growth of governmental bureaucracy and restore some faith after Nixon. Clinton & Gore, tried to prune back the growth of governmental bureaucracy and bring the budget under control after Reagan/Bush. The next one….will try to prune back the growth of governmental bureaucracy, bring the budget under control, and restore some faith in the presidency.
A pox on the Republican party. After this administration there should be no way to elect another.

And props too to Chris Matthews who’s poundin’ the table that the media–and he included MSNBC– have deliberately shut off coverage of Iraq.
The BushCo bullying in the runup to election is working on the media again. And once again their coverup of BushCo incompetence is playing into his agenda.
It’s not too late, MSM, you can still be honorable people and give the voters honesty and facts about Iraq instead of coverup and enabling. Your failure to act is political bias.

In the midst of all my doom and gloom about our tortured country, yesterday my daughter’s supervisor in this red state admitted to her he voted for Bush but said it isn’t something he’s proud of.
Then while buying postage stamps, the clerk said I must want the “quilt” stamps. I told her anything but Reagan, please. She actually laughed and those in line behind me didn’t attack.
Then this morning I see The New York Times has their reasoned analysis of the torture tragedy I will savor reading.
So my hope thermometer is up a wee bit. A wee bit.

It’s interesting to watch the right’s rhetorical tricks.
The first is what some pop-psyche types used to call the “mind fuck,” i.e., claiming to know what someone feels, in this case, “… the hatred for journalists is showing.” That’s one technique you can always count on from these guys.
The second is the loaded question: “… why didn’t you connect the dots …” The only reasonable answer to a question like that is: “When will you stop beating your wife?”
I swear to god that one of these billion-dollar right-wing think tanks must do monthly workshops in slimy rhetoric where they send right-wing journalists to become hitmen.

Well, there’s the loose change film, and 9-11 truth, and the film linked above which I’ve been watching in segments while it downloads. Pretty damning. At the very least I’d have to say there are questions………… is this what we are talking about?

Movie lovers get ready for this expansion of Rupert Murdoch’s empire: FoxFaith. FoxFaith, part of the home entertainment division of Rupert Murdoch’s movie studio, plans to produce as many as a dozen new films a year. The first film under the banner, Love’s Abiding Joy, a western based on a series by a Christian novelist FoxRepublicanJesus? Hope it sails off like the titanic.

I just received this in an email and I know the new thread is coming up soon so I thought I would post this here:
ELMO WILL NOT ABSOLVE YOU
By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman
Just returned from a run around the National Mall. Party tents are going up. Getting ready for the National Book Festival on Saturday. Hosted by the Library of Congress.
Sponsored by Target and AT&T. And starring Laura Bush. You will be seeing a lot of Laura Bush in the next couple of days. Talking with authors. Reading. Hanging out with kids. It’s just a nice cover for the killing.
We wanted to know more about the National Book Festival. So, we went to the Library of Congress web site. And we registered in the press area. And we got a call back from –
Susie Schoenberger.
She’s not with the Library of Congress. She’s with the public relations firm — Fleishman Hillard. Since when is the Library of Congress outsourcing press duties?
Anyway, we want to know — whose paying for this?
How much is Target putting up? How much is AT&T? Can’t answer that, Schoenberger says. You’ll have to speak with Sheryl Cannady. She’s with the Library of Congress.
So, we call Cannady. And she sends us an e-mail saying that the one-day National Book
Festival costs $1.5 million. But we can’t tell you who pays for it. Great.
In any event, you get the message.
The web site is the Library of Congress. But the book festival itself is a corporate/Laura Bush affair. And no doubt the 70 authors who will appear at the book festival are
wonderful people — people like Kai Bird, Douglas Brinkley and Andrew Carroll — and on the whole a book festival is a much better deal for the country than a military festival.
But we also have little doubt that the corporate funding — and Laura
Bush’s presence — helped define the types of authors who appear at the Festival. Please don’t tell us that it’s just about getting kids to read.
The question is not only reading — but reading what?
So, this year there has been a slew of books written about the war in Iraq and corporate power and the military-industrial complex that
President Eisenhower warned us against.
But the authors of these books will not appear at the National Book Festival on the Mall sponsored by Target and AT&T — and hosted by Mrs. Laura Bush.
Will Cindy Sheehan appear to read from her new book — Peace Mom?
No.
Will Elizabeth Holtzman appear to read from her new book — The Impeachment of George W. Bush? No. Will Thom Hartmann appear to read from Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class? No. Will Diane Wilson appear to read from her new book — An Unreasonable Woman? No. (She’d probably be unreasonable enough to confront our First Lady of
Bloodshed.) Will Edwin Black appear to read from his new book — Internal Combustion: How Corporations and Governments Addicted the World to Oil and Derailed The Alternatives?
No. Will Dr. Helen Caldicott appear to read from her new book — Nuclear
Power is Not the Answer? No. Will Noam Chomsky appear to read from his bestseller — Hegemony or Survival: America’s Quest for Global Domination? No. Will Amy and David Goodman appear to read from their new book — Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back? No. Will Jeff Goodell appear to read from his new book Big Coal: The Dirty Secret Behind America’s Energy Future? No. Will David Callahan appear to read from The Moral Center: How We Can
Reclaim Our Country from Die-Hard Extremists, Rogue Corporations, Hollywood Hacks and Pretend Patriots? No. Will Gore Vidal appear to read from Imperial America: Reflections on the United States of Amnesia? No. Will Stephen Kinzer appear to read from his most recent book, Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq, or from his
previous classic — All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror? No. Will David Cortright appear to read from his masterful Gandhi And
Beyond: Nonviolence for an Age of Terrorism? No.
You get the idea.
The National Book Festival is a public/private partnership — read — corporate controlled.
And therefore, none of these authors will appear.
Laura Bush will appear with kids and NBA players and community relations
representatives from Target. She’ll spend time with the Kevin Clash, an African-American man who is the voice of Elmo, and who has written a book titled My Life As a Furry
Red Monster.
Meanwhile, open today’s Washington Post and go to pages A16 to A19. See the faces of the fallen.
2,693 Americans dead in Iraq.
So far.
Hanging out with Elmo will not absolve you, Mrs. Laura Bush.

The Word — Colbert did a wonderful bit…couldn’t remember his word, kept up the batter, finally oh, yeah, Iraq. That’s it.
What an excellent slam on the media.
Oh, but they’re busy covering the Musharref-Karzai fest. Wonder how many billions that dog-and-pony show’s gonna cost us?

NJP, I’m in the Society for Creative Anachronisms (East Kingdom, same as you) And I’ve focused mainly on Gothic Textura Quadrata, and the appropriate styles of illumination, though…my true love is Italian White Vine, there’s an elegance of it, paired with Humanist, and Italic that can’t be surpassed.
Current two projects. 1. (For Saturday) An illuminated page in the style of the Book of Kells, there’s a LOT of knotwork, that’s making my eyes hurt.
2. The book of Psalms in Gothic Textura Quadrata, with minimal illumination, some occasional borders, and gold leaf Chapter initials. (probably some blue and red penwork too, since they’re fun)
Oh, and there’s a third coming down the way, of a collection of initials in various styles.
One thing that I think that is worth pursuing. Chris Wallace indicated that he needed to ask Clinton the question because he had gotten so many emails about it.
Maybe we should organize an email campaign every Friday for Sunday’s broadcast. Truth or Dare Chris.

upthread, it is well worth everyone’s time (1 hour 25 min) to watch the Press for Truth film linked above – anyone watching it (and not just folks like us who’ve been following) will come away from it having learned how far we still have to go . . .and will appreciate the efforts of the 9/11 Families even more

Is that a limit on all debate on this bill, or is that a limit on the debate on the ammendments? Is there time for additional debate after the house/senate conference irons out the differences?
on debate on the torture bill from Muckraker:
Per Glenn Greenwald:
Would it be fair to say that Clinton outfoxed Wallace?
well, gotta hit the showers and put a little ben gay on my phone finger… maybe a bandaid over the blister from yesterday…
Don’t forget Faux News sued in order to continue lying.
“In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.”

Bush bullying in the Senate this morning, just live on MSNBC. If this legislation is so important, it’s important enough to get it right. The Senate can delay its adjournment.
The Senate can act in lame duck session. The Senate can read what they’re voting on. What else was
sneaked inchanged overnight?Perhaps the line of the day. Listening to NPR, on which a security type in the Clinton administration by the name of Daniel Benjamin said, re: Iraq: “… a friend of mine puts it this way–when you drive the car over the cliff, your options narrow.”
Understatement of the decade.
Prairie Sunshine @ 334
Sorry, confused about this. Is Bush (as I would expect) pushing to conclude quickly, and you’re saying it shouldn’t be pushed hard and quickly, or is Bush saying to go slow? The latter would be uncharacteristic.
Cheers.
New Post!
OMFG, that graphic is HILARIOUS. It’s not just their heads pasted on, the expressions on their faces is just perfect.
Fox News?
Unfair and unbalanced
Speaking of dildos…
THAT was a ‘hard pushback’
Puh-lease.
People should just not go on Fox news Period.
When asked why:
“It is not a legitimate news organization”
Thats all there is to it.
By going on to Fox, Dems legitimize it.
An ongoing attack against Faux News can be mounted by continually contacting all and any advertisers that pay to advertise on fox and to not buy or use any of the advertisers products.
FDL can start this campaign by listing the major advertisers on here (and other progressive websites) and asking people to stop using the advertisers products/services and to contact the business to tell them why you are not going to use their products/services.
Contact them and tell them that you will not buy or use any of their products while ever they advertise on Fox.
Hit them where it hurts, in their wallets!
This is why I typically scroll right past anything written by TRex. Anyone who watches Fox is already a lost cause. So, the strategy is to have democrats go on and act tough. You don’t think roger ailes would have a counter punch for that? Wake up.
A better idea would be for dems just to avoid Fox, where they know they’re going to get the shiv in the groin.
BTW, I don’t think Boxer exactly brought Fox to its knees with her little performance. And, if I hosted a cable program, I’d ask her how she felt about supporting Torture Joe.
I think, rather than crowing about 15 seconds of cable TV kabuki, we might all want to focus our energies on remaking the democratic party. It’s clear that with vichy-esque leaders and leading lights such as Harry Reid and Barack Obama (shorter Barack re: Canadian rendered to syria: shit happens), we’re all forehead deep in the swamp.
With senate candidates like harold ford and sherrod brown, bob menendez and debbie stabenow (do we really need a senator named debbie?), all saying HELL YES to torture and the gutting of HC, our party has clearly left us.
With Jay Rockefeller and Frank Lautenberg fluffing Bush by retroactively saying torture wasn’t legal before, but you can’t prosecute for it, our party elders have shown they’ve lost their way.
And yes, TRex, the use of air quotes will be devastating. Fox will never recover.
