Jack Cafferty picked up on the "just a comma" comment that George Bush made on Sunday. And he has some…issues with the phrasing.
To say the least.
Crooks and Liars has the video — and they also have the clip of the Olbermann commentary from yesterday evening.
…After five years of skirting even the most inarguable of facts — that he was President on 9/11 and he must bear some responsibility for his, and our, unreadiness, Mr. Bush has now moved, unmistakably and without conscience or shame, towards re-writing history, and attempting to make the responsibility, entirely Mr. Clinton’s.
Of course he is not honest enough to do that directly.
As with all the other nefariousness and slime of this, our worst presidency since James Buchanan, he is having it done for him, by proxy.
Thus, the sandbag effort by Fox News, Friday afternoon.
Consider the timing: The very same weekend the National Intelligence Estimate would be released and show the Iraq war to be the fraudulent failure it is — not a check on terror, but fertilizer for it!
The kind of proof of incompetence, for which the administration and its hyenas at Fox need to find a diversion, in a scapegoat.
It was the kind of cheap trick which would get a journalist fired — but a propagandist, promoted:
Promise to talk of charity and generosity; but instead launch into the lies and distortions with which the Authoritarians among us attack the virtuous and reward the useless…
Watch both videos. Get yourself up and running for the day. Then spend some time with me brainstorming on what sorts of Get Out the Vote efforts you’ve been making in your community. It occurs to me that it is football season — wonder how a voter registration drive at the games would go over? November is coming…are you doing all you can?

and another fitz for the road!
Marty Lederman posted two excellent articles at Balkinization in the wee hours of this morning. One of them analyzes the changes made to the Military Commissions bill in the past 24 hours, and the other dumps on the torture triumphalists at WSJ and National Review. Both are excellent.
Thanks, Wigwam — will get more coffee fortification and then take a peek. Appreciate the heads up…
Morning, Christy! How is life with the in-laws today?
imm at 6 — it’s good. Plenty of coffee. *g* It’s cool this morning — that crisp, Fall feeling is in the air, and I’m in a sweatshirt. Gotta love this time of year.
The technology now available to make these remarkable TV protest speeches available to us is truly remarkable. Note too that the push back by Clinton (and those here and elsewhere who have high lighted it) today has brought the Condor out of her carrion laden nest, sqwaking a dismissal. Christy – also a Great idea on football GOTV drive.
OT, but I noticed on Raw Story that Methodists have identified this week as an occasion for anti-war activities in related communities. I also read somewhere yesterday that Oct 5 will see protests. Anyone know where these (and other) activities are being listed?
If banging my head against a wall and hoping that the pain will go away counts, then yes.
Unfortunately the GOTV issue here in Arizona is dominiated by the GOP and the senile geriatrics that vote for the likes of St. John McCain, Joe Arpaio, Fife Symington, J.D. Hayworth et al. – so rather than knock on doors – been putting up anti-status quo slogans on freeway overpasses and other high visability areas – not sure how well a registration drive would go over in the football stadiums – the NFL is more and more corporate and therefore GOP.. college games al la Arizona State has most of the spectators drunk before kickoff
‘Morning, Christy!!
Great idea about the voter registration at football games; the local party is doing just that in my county, at the state university’s home games. They call it a “tailgate party”, and unlike all the other events necessary to winning this fall, the tailgates get the most volunteers to help out, and ready sponsors to provide funding.
Don’t have a state university where you are? Then try the high school football games and be sure to ask passing students if they are seniors and if they’ll be 18 by the election. Start ‘em young, start ‘em right!
And don’t forget to ask folks whether they have thought about absentee ballots.
Anyone know a good source for “Had Enough? Vote Democratic” bumper stickers?
I want get a bunch to hand out.
I was just over at Professor Cole’s place and read this:
I delved into some of the comments and then found this by one very talented writer:

This is my favorite time of year as well — it is so rejuvenating some how. Makes me more introspective as well…. And little Imm just gets fired up for all the imagination magic that comes with the fall….
As for the TV talking heads — they know which way the wind is blowing and they are trying to get a bit in front of the November curve….
Dadhusker @ 10
Some of Deval Patrick’s supporters were on freeway overpasses with signs on the way to the Pats game before the primary. It was pretty much a parking lot going through there, so they had alot of play. Also, we got at least 6 personal phone calls the day of the election to go vote. He had a huge win, but he also is a great candidate.
imm at 14 — I’ve been thinking that as well with the talking head crowd. Especially Scarborough — he’s been much more critical lately. Interesting…
OT — Kerry on Imus this morning…going to take a look at the specific language in the torture bill. Thinking about running for prez…not yet decided. John Kerry–the not-yet-deciderer….
Imus on Clinton v Wallace…Condoleeza says it was the Clinton Admin’s fault… yeah right, like she’s been so truthful before. Ol’ Mushroom Cloudoleeza….
Republicans can’t be trusted to rein in this rogue president…Vote Democratic. Vote for democracy.
Atrios has a great YouTube clip from the Daily Show up as well. hehehehe

I was EPU’d. Don’t usually repeat a post but it is definitely on topic.
On it’s editorial page today, USA Today has a cartoon of Clinton with a stain on his suit with the caption “bin Laden inaction” – Clinton is saying to himself “To self, get more stain remover”
If there was any question that there is a concerted effort to slime Clinton inaccurately with blame for 9/11 – this proves the point. This cartoon distills in one picture the intent of The Path to 9/11, Chris Wallace’s hit job for Fox and Condasleeza’s lies (BushCo) about Clinton’s lack of a plan. I’m disgusted and fuming.
I hope Richard Clarke speaks up.

Christy — I sent an email to you at the aol account — is that the correct address?
imm at 21 — It is a good addy, and I got it, I just haven’t had time to get a response back. But I thought it was a good idea, just FYI.
Well, off to make the money so that my son can eat pancakes with blueberries when they are not in season!
cbl @ 19
Thanks CBL. Does anyone else also think this is pretty remarkable? It has been many a decade since an organized religion (and Methodists have sometimes been conservative) organized a protest. In a neighboring (very wealthy) town to mine, recently (couple of years ago) a Congregational minister was purportedly fired for an anti-war sermon.
CBL also thanks for your wonderfully funny piece last night (circa no. 221 of T-Rex’s post) explaining FDL traditions to newcomers, i.e. what FDL (may) mean, what’z up with the Fitz rush, what happens to troll droppings, etc. On perhaps a slow news day, that deserves a whole posting.
Totally off the subject, but is that an old photo of Jack Cafferty? He’s either had a wee bit of a weight change or someone’s been playing with the Photoshop. His jaw line and neck look different.
dab from CT – noticed that they have been replaying Clinton’s finger wagging moment about Monica on CNN… they apparently can’t help themselves from bashing Bill… how is it they can keep supporting shrub’s lies?
very tiresome

Getting reregistered and getting my daughter reregistered are the chores of the day.
Us Dems Abroad have to register every time we vote!
Off to get others to sign up, particularly those who last voted in CT. (Not me, alas.)
What’s the story now? Can college students vote where they go to school or must they vote where their parents live?
It’s amazing to me that whoever did the interview with Rice wasn’t fully prepared to challenge the inevitable bullshit. I guess that would be too much like work.
Alison at 30 — I think they can register either way. The rule of thumb is that they can only vote once — but they can vote in the place where they live — and that could be either at home via absentee ballot or in the community in which they attend school. I think that is true for most states, anyway. Anyone know of differing laws in any particular state? I know it works that way for WV…
Iraq is neither a comma or an exclamation point. It is more like that long stream of random punctuation marks used to indicate expletives.
Richmond @

Hi Richmond. You may be referring to the protest organized by World Can’t Wait. Here’s a place to check for action in your vicinity.
Dadhusker @

These right-wing hit pieces are forever claiming to know what other people think and feel: “he feels…” and “she thinks … ” and “he hates …” and “she went berserk over …”
Why can’t they stick to what was said and what, if anything, was wrong with it.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 32
Christy, i believe that’s correct. There are usually voter registration tables at university/college orientation activities. If not, we can organize some.
Christy: Thanks for that daily show clip—I needed that laugh. I had to wait until my Gop co-workers were in a meeting to watch it!!!
hehe So darn funny!
I was relieved to hear Cafferty take on the beast’s comma remark. And Keith’s piece, though long and winding, was also much appreciated.
I have to admit that I am holding my nose while working for the Dems this election cycle. I am disappointed (and down right pissed) by so many of their actions and inactions both locally and nationally.
Locally, the Peace & Justice Center is holding a big rally in Bangor on Saturday. It’s called “Stop the War 2006″, we’re hoping for a big turn out and lots of families and young folks. Jean Hay Bright, who’s running against Olympia Snowe, is going to speak, but our county office won’t endorse the event.
I think they miss a great opportunity to tell the citizens of Maine and the country where Democrats stand on preemptive war, war profiteering, and torture. I need my party to do this.
Just saying …
College students are huge watchers of Olbermann, The Daily Show, and Colbert. A voter registration drive on Saturday morning outside the stadium in the big tailgate area would probably do quite well. As would some BlueAmerica-type conversations, even outside the stadiums in some otherwise red states.
“Had Enough?” is a great line for a football crowd. These are the kind of folks who ask the coach who led the team to a 10-1 record last year “What went wrong?” and threaten to can the guy if it happens again. Accountability is definitely a word in their vocabulary. “Would you renew the contracts of the coaching staff that had six years to bring you victory?”
I think most would answer “no.”
Christi ….. I’ll have a clip on U TUBE in a day or two called :
” And You’re Not Registered To Vote ? “
I’ll send it along.
To all that have left an ATTA BOY at TYKO many thanks . I recognize the names ….
The clips are there too .
Here’s that address …

“Keep the shiny side up, and the rubber side down.”
Lots of fall festivals in the community, perhaps that’s an option.
The comma comment was interesting to me in many ways, but most importantly, it seems to be an admission that Bush realizes that the whole Iraq affair is a failure (the lives and lost money for naught). Or, worse, maybe what he is referring to End Times, when all of history is, in essence, just a comma.
By the way, we haven’t heard a word a word by the Bushies on the coup in Thailand. Aren’t they all about Democracy?! They had such success in bringing in an enlightened new leader to Iran.
darkblack, if you’re out there, your art work on the “comma” is one of your best. Really moving. I left you a note way, way back there and long after the fact. Just wanted you to know how much I appreciated that one. Really brought tears to my eyes.
I just wanted to mention last night’s great de-lurking thread. I wasn’t able to participate live, but I made myself late for work checking it out this morning, and I recommend others do the same! *g*
Thanks CBL, Meta, and Susan on the protest links!
I don’t know about registering people to vote at football games. The prices of tickets are so outrageous only the wealthiest people can afford to go, i.e. good chance of “fiscal” Republicans. At least here in Illinois you can’t ask people their party when doing registration.
Good places to do voter registration is at public places with lots of foot traffic, grocery stores, train stations, etc. Another good idea, is to canvass an area then go back and register people.
Millineryman @ 41
Definitely — I’m going to be out helping to man a Dem booth at our local community festival on Saturday (after canvassing the neighborhood in the morning.) I know they’ve been mentioned here before, but farmer’s markets are an excellent location, too.
I guess I would put “just a comma” right up there with “just a number;” both are devoid of respect and totally lacking in acknowledgment of the tremendous sacrifices being made by our troops and by their families and friends.
A president who truly understands that you don’t send the military into harm’s way unless you have to, and who understands what being in harm’s way really means, would not reduce this conflict to being just a comma. If his administration were staffed with people who understood that great burden and responsibility, no one would have ever made the “just a number” remark, and would have been reprimanded or forced to apologize for doing so.
This is a president who allowed his Secretary of Defense to go forward with a military engagement with no post-war plan. Think about the insanity of that, if you can do so without raising your blood pressure to dangerous levels.
This is a president who cheaped out on the war, who failed to properly equip and arm the troops whose lives depended on it.
I still do not understand how any American sitting in the Congress of the United States can go to sleep at night knowing what they know, and knowing that their own inaction, or their own complicity, is probably responsible in part for the deaths and injuries of thousands of people.
So, Clinton is now the bright, shiny object we should all be looking at, instead of looking into the face of our current president and demanding that he be accountable, that he take responsibility, that he stop lying to the American people and the world, that he see that the blood of thousands is on his hands.
Just a comma. I have a comma for him. See if you can find it: George W. Bush, dangerously incompetent.
susan @ 38
Mercifully, I have a great Act Blue candidate right next door to volunteer for enthusiastically, but as a Hillary Clinton/Chuck Schumer constituent, I hear ya. Right now I’m balls to the wall (not that I have balls) to get my Dem elected November 7, 2006 – pounding the pavement and working the phones. As of November 8, 2006, I will be all about getting a progressive presidential candidate nominated for 2008, plus agitating for a progressive candidate to challenge Chuck Schumer in 2010.
The whole “comma – period” thing is shorthand for saying “Don’t think God’s done working yet just because you are” doesn’t make sense for Bush’s comment about Iraq.
I think Bush meant to say “footnote” instead of comma, but couldn’t remember the word. (Not that he ever read any footnotes, of course.)
History will teach him the difference.
Back to Bill Clinton.
Even Kristal is saying that it was a masterpiece.
Raw nerve, Mrs Rice Pudding, the only high official with a positive polling, had to be sent in a des-information campaign, perhaps Laura will be next…
Clinton to Wallace, face to face, on Fox, telling the rep. base, the truth about the 8 months before 9/11, stroke of genius.
I agree, Reshift! Trex really did a great job of drawing out so many new people.
Not only is there no end in sight for the Iraq War, Bush seems to be absolutely proud of that fact. I’m still rattling from the testimony of the military brass yesterday.
Peterr @ 50
I think you are right about the footnote. Alas, I don’t think he can be “learned.”
meta @ 43
Can someone help me find a link to this? I somehow missed it. Thanks!
Here is an important article about the Torture Bill by R. Jeffrey Smith.
It seems that seems that under revised wording introduced this weekend a lot more people are subject to being grabbed and held indefinitely:
Hi all !
Just a scary thought to add to this discussion.
Bush said Iraq will be remembered as just a comma.
He may have been trying to be clever AND ……
He may be right.
Especially if there is a massive nuclear smackdown in Iran on the menu.
How do you diminish the impact or the Iraq mess ?
By creating a larger mess of course.
Good luck with that Fascist takeover thing you have going.
I know we ( Canada ) are probably next.

The Senate will recess acc to Dorgan at the end of this week…
He’s speaking now on the floor of the Senate and is some kinda ticked off.
Talking about Bunnatine Greenhouse now! Bless him.
OT..Just finished reading 584 comments at Late Nite. There was no trash.. there is no other site that I know of where I could read the comment section and not have to read through a ton of trash. The amazing thing to me is that this is true for every thread.. day after day. How do you do it?
selise @ 62
selise — while you’re trying, can you remind his staffers that the reason the GOP is able to paint the Dems as “weak” is not because they’re not tough-guy warmongers, it’s because they won’t stand up for what they believe in.
If this is an accurate statement of his position, he’s falling straight into that trap again, looking to ‘08 and trying to avoid saying anything he can be nailed on. He’s had plenty of times to look at both sides of this “compromise” and see that they’re both unacceptable.
got yer commas right here f-wad,
Dorgan is my senator and as far as I’m concerned he’s North Dakota’s gift to the nation. [Gabe, you reading this?] Along with our great oil and renewable energy supplies. And food.
So if Texas keeps sending us these pissy politicians–Bush, Chee-knee, Cornyn, Delay–I say kick ‘em out, we don’ need ‘em.
Kerry didn’t offer a whole lot…my impression was he hasn’t looked at it yet. Callers to his office, arm yourself with specific points to cite that he should look at.
And a heads-up from One America:
By the way, it’s the writer/editor in me, but dates should always be Sept 27 [no th] or “the 27th of Sept.” But that’s just me…and as far as I know, AP Style and CHicago Manual of Style and….
Best GOTV strategy:
Tell the fucking Democrats in Congress that they should be yelling at the top of their fucking lungs about the criminal administration we have in power, the fallacious justification for war, the immoral push to allow torture, the scandal upon scandal that has brought shame on our country, the incompetence and cronyism of this administration. Tell the Democrat congressmen to scream this from every street corner and hilltop until voters and those who write the evening news understand that our country has been cut off at the knees by a bunch of misanthropic, retrograde, fascists. GIVE US DEMOCRATS A FUCKING REASON GODAMMIT TO SHOW UP AT THE POLLS FOR FUCKING CRISSAKE!!!!
Christy,

i’m not going to do less, just refocus my efforts… money goes to CCR, volunteering goes to specific candidates i can support, and i think i should spend more time on social movement politics (vs electoral politics). don’t know if this a good idea or not, but we live in strange times that call on us to do all we can….
ecb @101 last thread: Loved your letter to the editor “Administration’s really not thinking”. Yup, that’s republicans showing the courage of their convictions!
Blaming it all on Clinton, with a religious twist… “I like to tell people when the final history is written on Iraq, it will look like just a comma …” (Which is “dog whistle code” for “God will prevail.”) Strengthened in his resolve by his faith, Bush is failing his way to success in cleaning up all those problems left by the godless Democrats. Serenely, Bush sails on, across a sea of commas. Forget about an “October Surprise.” Prepare for a “November Surprise” instead — one that comes after the election. That looks to be Bush’s best chance to try to clean up Iraq once and for all by going after Iran and bringing real democracy to the Middle East at last, before any meddling new Congress can stop him. Bush knows everything will be fine. He’s working his way through the commas and approaching the end of the sentence. He’s the democracy-bringer, and he’s doing God’s will.
jman_ny @ 68
amen!
sadly, that’s not something we can control. although, we may be able to influence it… to the phones, pups!
I wrote my senators on the weekend (K and K)saying that if anyone was in a position to lead the Dem revolt against torture, it was they.
(Ya’ think anyone from Massachusetts is going to flip on them because they didn’t support George Bush’s discretionary power to waterboard?)
Total radio silence.
Are they dead? Do they have to leave their brains at the beltway when they enter DC?
Hello!! Anyone home?
Off-topic, but being the person who suggested a permanent pox on the phrase “Nothing could be further from the truth,” I must note this tidbit from Fox News:
Marital sniping may have led to the departure of Brit Hume’s wife, Kim, from Fox News last week.
Kim Hume’s imminent exit as Fox’s D.C. bureau chief was announced Thursday. The buzz out of Washington is that she and the anchorman had been tattletaling on each other to the chairman and CEO of Fox Television Stations.
“They’d been calling Roger [Ailes] in New York separately,” reports our source. “They’d complain to him about each other.”
A Fox spokeswoman denied that either Hume has bothered Ailes. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” she said.

Christy,
I was listening to ‘the Young Turks’ on air America this morning while driving to work and they were all over the ‘comma’ quote. I decided that I am not doing enough to fight this regime and resolved that even if I only talk to every neighbor I see on my daily dog walks, it would at least be a start.
Thank you to this group for your inspiration.

It was all Condi’s fault, she was the National Security Advisor, but no one told her how to do her job. She was playing her piano for the Pres when she should have set his ass down and told him to stop clearing brush at the ranch and pay attention to the assessment that someone might use airplanes to attack us. And instead he said to the CIA briefer-O.K. you’ve done your job, go back to Washington. Help may be on the way with our next elections.

I found the “comma” remark weird. Was he grasping for a word like “footnote?”
Greg Mitchell at Editor & Publisher has a column about the possible source of the “comma” remark, which is interesting. He did a little googling.

A comma?
I think W’s handlers couldn’t trust him to pronounce “asterisk” correctly.
I noticed that three and half years into the Iraq war Bush still confused Iraq with Iran at least momentarily in that comma interview. Was he subconsciously let it slip his real intention to invade Iran soon?
I am amazed that nobody here understands what Bush’s “comma” comment really meant.
It comes from a fundamentalist code-speak reference: “Never put a period where God puts a comma”.
Bush was signalling his fundie base that things would get better, so they shouldn’t worry.
This is Fundie-speak, or as Steve Gilliard so eloquently termed it, “dog whistle speak”.
If you listen carefully to Bush, a lot of what we normal humans hear as bizarre mumbo-jumbo coming out of his mouth is really deliberate “dog whistle speak” reassurances to the ultra-conservative Fundies that make up much of that 30% that we just can’t comprehend.
Frightening isn’t it? There is a huge underbelly of America that not only harbours strange creepy beliefs, but they also speak in their own secret code language to each other.
If only they didn’t wear shoes, so we could see their cloven hooves….
