Given the riotous success of last night’s invitation to de-lurk (so many comments we blew out the server!), I thought I would kind of continue on that theme tonight. Something some of you were asking for last night was a user’s guide to FDL. We do have a lot of features these days, from the Spotlight Project to that herd of brightly colored icons at the bottom of each post that I have to confess that I don’t entirely understand, to basic questions like how to post a link.
So, tonight in the Comments section, I or some other helpful individual will endeavor to answer any questions you may have from, "How do I Spotlight a post to the New York Times?" to "What’s an EPU?" to "What is the difference between TRex and trexing?" to "Where did I leave my keys yesterday?"
While we may not be able to answer all your questions about Life, The Universe and Everything (42!!), we’ll tell you whatever we do know and hopefully point you on your way to the right answer. Also, any of you who lurkers who never got a chance to speak up before the stampede knocked out the comments section last night, this is a second chance to add your voice to the Big Discussion.
In the event that this thread starts to look overloaded, I will open up a special Late Late Nite Bonus Thread to catch the spill-over. If your question doesn’t get picked up and answered right away, please don’t take it personally. Just wait a few minutes and try again. If this thread is anything like last night’s, it’s going to move very fast. Some initial postings may get overlooked in all the hustle and bustle.
Once again, thank you all for joining us here at the Late Nite Lake! It’s you guys who make all of the great work we do possible. Thank you for your support!!

Do I?? really? I can’t believe it!
I got myself EPUd in the last thread, but this was SO important to me that for this one comment I’ll hijack the thread:
Thanks, EVERYBODY! I just caught Angie first when I got back. Wow. What an outpouring of support! And people wonder why I hang out at FDL…! I can’t thank you all enough. (And I also can’t apologize enough for Sen. (GA-Really Stupid) Saxby Chambliss. Let’s get real here… SAXBY? I pray daily that John Barrow will stomp the crap out of Max Burns again (which he did 2 years ago… should I bring garlic and a crucifix to vote?), but to be honest there’s not all that much difference.
Little Johnny Barrow has an ad out that not only says we gotta “stay the course” and not “cut and run,” but he’s also proud of having voted to repeal the “death tax.” Bleah. I got all over his e-mails and his web site and suggested that he might consider calling it the “Paris Hilton Welfare Tax,” and I became WAY less polite about the “cut and run” shit.
I love my city, and I love my job… However, I absolutely HATE what goes on around me. I stopped watching local news over 2 years ago… I don’t care what deity it is, just pray for us down here! Thank God and Jesus and Buddah and Allah and The Goddess (not necessarily in order of importance..!) for FDL. If there’s anything that keeps me from getting a gun and using it y’all are it! (There. Had my rant. Feel better now!)
Continue as you were….
Hello, from Rawlins Wyoming!
Eminem! MOSH!
Not to grab all the glory, but in case anyone missed it our TRex was honored by a minion of The Great Orange God, whose name may not be mentioned aloud…:
Snipped from http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/9/26/74836/3296
CHEERS to the best line of the week. TRex at Firedoglake on the Lieberman campaign’s Secretary of Foot-in-Mouth Disease, Dan Gerstein: “DANGERSTEIN out to do spin control for your campaign is a lot like trying to change a diaper with a Molotov cocktail. It doesn’t do anything about the shit, and now everything’s on fire.” If that were music it’d be Mozart.

Okay, I’m sick and tired of seeing my name here. I’m gonna go downstairs and let them know that The Theropod Is IN THE HOUSE… (back shortly…)
Hey, Oilfieldguy!
Where are you headed after Rawlins? Loaded or Dead Head?
If your passing thru Denver, we could do lunch — or sumpin’!

Whoo-hoooo!! I hope that quote makes it all the way to DANGERSTEIN’s desk!
So, who has a question? Raise your hand.
This is karma, Marion!
enjoy yourself.
Oilfieldguy..Rawlings Wyo..I really miss Wyo..I used to commute from Jackson Hole to Little Rock..1550 miles door to door and 26 hours with a couple of naps along the way. TRex: 700 posts tonight!!!
I don’t know who invented blogs, but I am so grateful for FDL and all the other insightful, intelligent conversation that exists in this alternative universe from the inane mainstream media. This medium is also empowering a few, like the great KO, to start speaking the truth to the American public. TRex, you are hilarious and inspirational. I love this place and hopefully more and more people will discover what a powerful source FDL, and many others are in helping us focus on how to get our country back. Thanks FDL!
Are we all watching President Pervez Musharef talking to Jon Stewart, or is it the servers? Damn. Look at what I just said… PRESIDENT Musharef, talking to, let’s face it, a COMEDIAN… Might that just POSSIBLY be because it’s one of the few places he thought he could get his point across without spin? Tragic…. WORSE than tragic…
Methinks this is gonna be a berry berry nasty campaign.
Hey neocons, more salt for them wounds?
They are not used to Democrats fighting back, are they? I credit the netroots for absolutely hammering the Dems for being so limp.
Bush has a policy that is a terrorist multiplier.
Where is Osama?
I heard That Iraqi Dude Musharif or whatever his name is on Blitzer today.
I swear I heard him say, “Be bewwy bewwy quiet, we awe hunting Osama. hehehehehe.
Marion, sorry to hear about your being outsourced. That’s a bad one, and like torture, it’s not just wrong ‘coz it’s wrong, it doesn’t work either. It’s a fad, they think they’re so clever, like when they were all buying dot com stocks or junk bonds. That stuff didn’t work either, but they never seem to notice that. Hang in as best you can, better days a-comin’.
OFG, well, and hello to you in Rawlings WY from Toronto. You at the Flying J?
Hey “bloggers”. I know you are all obsessed with electing more ineffectual politicians of your stripe but why not forget about what your unprincipled and self-serving politicians might do to save you and actually consider doing something to save our country? It is our country after all.

Oilfieldguy, I’m gonna have to call you on not issuing a formal “spew alert” here. Don’t make me have to warn you again…. (Oh, dayum, HOW I howled…)
Yes, TRex, I have a question. Keith Olbermann tells the president what a weasel he is, and Eminem does a killer GOTV rap. My question is, “Why are the voices the left needs to hear coming from TV announcers and rappers? As opposed to elected, paid Democratic leaders, for instance?”
Oilfieldguy @ 7
That was the line that blew my skirt up and just did, again. :)
To pre-empt the inevitable and eternal question…What the hell is EPU?
It literally means Evil Parallel Universe, who at one time was a regular and omniscient commenter (now, he is an occasional but still omniscient icon). Coincidentally I presume, he would leave insightful posts at the end of comment threads after a new post was loaded upstairs.
Not to be denied, EPU would storm upstairs and post his comment on the new thread.
Now being EPU’d is a badge of honor claimed by commenters who will not stand for their thoughts and prose to be lost in the Evil Parallel Universe of a stale comment thread.
I’ve been seeing Digg it as a link at other blog sites. Some sort of networking recommend thing or another. I would like a clue as well.
Sigh. Nevermind….
Pachacutec @ 26
Kale. just kale… OOOH… look, shiny thing?
Got EPU’d on the Jordan Barab’s thread, but I just had to bring this over ’cause it will stop me from taking my anger out on my poor ol’ computer. *g*
“Jordan Barab rocks!
I’ve never been in a union myself, so I’m always just an outsider lookin’ in.
That said, I’ve often lamented (or Lamonted if you wish *g*) the lack of the power, benefits and protections in my field of IT that a union could, and perhaps ought to provide.
No, let me change that. None of this perhaps sh*t! Damn well ought to provide!
We always hear about this pendulum swinging thingie, but I sure get tired waiting for it to swing back from the all-powerful Corporate death-grip on the lives of the average worker.
And I’m not talkin’ about your blue-collar worker! I’m talkin’ about all of us white-collar slaves to the Corporate Masters.
I’d rant for good bit more here, but I wanted also to whine a bit too. *g*
My whine: Just how come Jordan’s posts don’t get more FDL participation?
Heck, you’d think that “union” was a bad word.
Ohhhh…it is. And just how sorrowful is that?
Unions, Labor, Liberals…why even fecking Democrats have become “bad words” in the lexicon of American discourse.
And these “bad words” are courtesy of a deliberate, reprehensible, and perhaps even criminal demonization by those insanely “right” folks.
You know, the very same folks who are driving this nation over a cliff.
So for the FDLers who think that passing up a Jordan post is OK, ’cause they don’t have no union card, or ’cause “But I’m A White Collar Worker”, you had best be waking up!
The same Repub bastards you’re fighting on Lying about Going to War, Torture Bills, Illegal Domestic Wiretapping, Tax Cuts only for the Rich, etc. are the very same fecking Corporate crazies who RIF you and ship your job to the highest bidding non-union state or even overseas to Lower Slobovia in a heartbeat.
It ain’t real helpful if you get rid of the cockroaches in your kitchen, but leave ‘em in your bedroom!
So come on in FDLers! The water here too is just the thing to make you feel good. Might even make your day!”
/whine and rant off

sorry to ask, but did the e coli thing get followed up in the u.s. by the ‘terrorizing our food supply’ story? and if so, did anyone else find this a conveniently republican-esque connect fear to terror post-labor-day-in-election-year meme?

Hello from Texas!
Now how the hell does the “edit comment” button work?
And, why doe FDL get caught in The General’s firewall these days? It was since last summer, but 2 weeks ago, WHAMMO, no more firedogsmokebreaks at work. Bum deal, huh?

I been working very hard since I got back from Vegas and I’m just wondering if anyone has ventured into freeperland about the spinach thing. Someone over there has got to saying this is a terrorist bio-hazard attack from illegal mexcriments.
sharkbabe from previous thread.. My bitch about being sent to the mods was tongue in cheek…I had sent a comment in the AM thread about how trash free FDL was and how much I like that aspect. Now on topic..I may have been the first last night to ask about a users manual for FDL, however the second part of that post was an inquiry about doing a user demographic survey. That seemed to not resonate. I read all 603 posts and to me the most full was reading the personal and “demographic” stuff in the comments. I have been curious about the age and geographic distribution of the FDLers. I really think that kind of info is fun and useful.
Mungen_Cakes @ 52
That will go nicely with my latte. I am trying out the ‘quote’ button tonight. De-lurking one baby step at a time.
What the heck is a ‘concern troll’?
thanks!
Turning into pumpkin.
Later on.
So all day I was thinking about all the things I could talk about if TRex opened Late Night up again to us irregular commenters (as opposed to lurkers). Wouldn’t you know it? I can’t remember a single thing. Except to say thanks to the two who liked my name. Actually, that is the real reason I couldn’t enter the comment fray when FDL began – I needed a really good nom de plume and couldn’t come up with one I thought was good enough for FDL.
HotFlash @

Because Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer, and Rahm Emanuel are invertebrate animals, which means they have no spines. To stand up to the Repugnicans and Pox News requires a functioning spinal column, which apparently these days can only be found in people outside the political establishment.
Like us!
At the Manimalia Research Center, where we are working on tomorrow’s human-animal hybrids today, we often have the debate on whic Bush hack plays top/bottom/gimp etc.
Our verdict is that George is Karl’s gimp and occasionally Dick will join in on some hot tag team action when his heart is up to it. Rummy is invited over if they need any scat play and sundry waterboarding to liven their “frank discussions.”
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy FDL. I am an Agonista but my day is not complete without checking FDL. Thanks…S

Btw, what’s the word on the big hit piece on Dems that’s supposedly coming out from NYT tomorrow?
bunnypants @ 56
A “concern troll” is an operative from the other side of the political spectrum who turns up and pretends to be on our side, but then begins to attack our tactics and methods.
“I’ve been reading this site since the beginning, but it’s posts like this that are making me feel like FDL is declining in quality. You guys should do more posts about ponies and candy!”
That’s a quintessential concern troll statement, a left-handed compliment wrapped in an insult, wrapped in a colorful candy shell!
On Sept 6th I contributed to the Chris Carney campaign, and was noted as the 26th contribute of the day. Will I receive the CD that Howie Klien promised? Please advise. To date I’ve received no response towards that end.
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..#more-4361
If you’d like to help, please consider giving Chris a hand at the Blue America ActBlue Page. The first 30 contributors today will each get a rare, cool CD sent to them, one that can’t be purchased in any stores (or online) but that has music from Sarah McLachlan, Evanescence, Avril Lavigne, Pink, Fugees, Indigo Girls and several other artists with something to say worth listening to.
Oilfieldguy,

Good night, all. Lordy, I cannot begin to tell you how important you all are… Even the lurkers, becuase every now and then you creep out from the shadows and let us hear you. Like last night. Trust me, you don’t need to stay in the shadows. And if you have questions about terminology there’s a HUGE snarkopod who will either answer them himself or let the rest of the late evening crowd do it. Again, thanks if you’re not a newbie, and WELCOME if you are. I’m a real newbie, but hey, I got #1 on this thread! Go, thou, and do likewise!
Nighty night…. I’m off to put on my jammies.

It is purely my opinion (w/ a Bill Maher spin), the US is secretly turning their own citizens against spinach in hopes to garner the same “Just Say No” policy that we had in the eighties…now, only if we can reverse spin the weed thing, all will be well.
Maybe, just maybe we can smoke the spinach instead of eating it…really get shit faced (then we can go hunting).

Not strictly on-topic, but I wanna know. Now that Bill Clinton has given the party a spine transplant and the NIE has given the Dems some political capital to shove in their back pocket, are they going to stand up to the thugs on the Rape/Torture Legalization bill?
Leahy jumped in the pool. Who’s going to follow? Yeah, Russ Feingold, I’m talkin’ to you.

I really will be shocked to insensibility if the Dems actually learn how to push back before November. They’ve rolled over like sprayed roaches and kicked their legs in the air for every other ass-fucking from the GOP. Why mess with a perfect record of inaction and capitulation?
Same reason I don’t use the NYTimes. What? They expect me to read it? You’re kidding, right?
What’s this noise I’m hearing about October 5th? Some sort of protest or something? Wassup?

Concern troll history was made this week in New Hampshire:
“A lead staffer in U.S. Rep. Charlie Bass’ (R-NH) office resigned Tuesday after admitting to posting fake messages on political blogs. Tad Furtado, the No. 2 staffer in Bass’ Washington office, resigned after it was revealed that he posed as a Democrat on liberal blogs. Bass said that Furtado posed as a supporter of Bass opponent Paul Hodes but then discussed how difficult it would be to beat Bass.”

EPU is short for Evil Parallel Universe — an old FDL hand, who had a penchant for writing really pithy comments, that wouldn’t be posted until a new thread was up and most folks had moved on. Hence, EPU’d came to mean a comment or discussion in a left behind thread.
And the edit thingy? It doesn’t work in IE6, but it works fine in Firefox. It’s been said that it’s a Java or JavaScript issue — supposedly, it works in the beta IE7 (which is MicroSquish’s Firefox catchup browser).

Been thinking since last nite about that “lurker” word and its peeping-tomish quality.
Perhaps we should change it to “Quiet Guests” or “Shy Visitors”?
Or how about “Folks hitchhiking by the side of the road and waiting for you to stop”.
I don’t know, just something better than “lurkers”.
I am free!
Thank you kind moderator/wizard.
jsut thought i would register and comment. i am a persistent lurker, former commenter at dkos. cheers.
ck@97..Thanks for the heads up on edit on IE. I thought I was just stupid.
Does anyone think it’s a little ironic that Scooter Libby is trying to get his case dismissed by asserting the need to use classified evidence in his defense (which his cronies won’t allow), while Bush & co try to convict deainees with classified evidence that they never get to see?
Let’s hope Judge Walton see through this.
Not only that, but a LTR club, a Doug Adams club, a Tom Waits club, a Fiona Apple, a Tom Robbins club, and a Star Trek club.
I know I’m leaving a few out, too. Apparently great minds and all. ;)
I stumped the mighty TRex!!
I think newcomers need to know about linking most, and I haven’t tried it out here so I’m not qualified to explain it. I know when I first started, I mostly just wanted to point out something interesting rather than offer my thoughts.
If there are any lurkers out there who have wanted to try linking, but were afraid they would mess up the thread, this is exactly the right thread to give it a try.
By the way, some people seemed to think on last night’s thread that the term lurker was unique to FDL. It’s a net wide thing; I believe it started out in the chat rooms and not the political blogs. It was kind of an insult way back, but doesn’t mean anything but a “reader who doesn’t comment” in the blogosphere.
Thanks for the EPU’d explanation! I thought, after much agonizing, that I’d figured it out, but I was wrong. And I even provided my wrong explanation to new Firepups I’d encouraged to jump in the lake.
How about a FDL FAQ to help folks get oriented? There’s so much “in” stuff going on here among established members of the community that newbies feel a little nervous about posting.
Not that it’s stopped me, but I’m used to floundering around. No real harm ever came of it.
SixStringSlingr @

You click on “Quote this comment” under the comment you like, 63 in your example, and the blognomes do it for you. The comment plus the TRex @ 63 will all be in the comment box waiting for you, simply add witty remark and press “Submit Comment”. Wise people will click “Preview” and/or “Spell Check” first, but the rest of us post the typos then use “Edit” (which appears directly below your new comment), it works for 5 minutes or so to let you get de-embarrass yourself if required.
What is Princess Bride? Wait…. I need to put on my flame suit.
Oilfieldguy @ 25
Ok, I’ll give it a try. Lumpy!
Did I win something?
A JRR Tolkien club and John Kennedy Toole clubs.
I saw my first real-life concern troll the other day, when Markos (Our Orange Overlord) came to Austin to speak (in a dirt lot behind a book store). You just knew what was coming when this dude (in an orange stocking cap!) leapt up and started listing his Kewl Kidz credz: “I started reading Kos back in 2002, you probably remember my screen name [unfamiliar screen name], I was a big Howard Dean supporter, blah, blah, blah.” The crowd and Markos ran the guy off. Virtual reality came to life!

Let’s talk about TRex while he’s gone!
On a more serious note, reading “my” liberal blogs gives me hope. I have a complete rubber stamp collection of reps and senators at all levels of government. John Cornyn may not be the stupidest senator, (I think that honor goes to Oklahoma) but he says the stupidest things and never ever votes against his BFF George. He and Gonzales are cut from the same cloth. I will be absolutely shocked if any of our Texas incumbents are knocked off in November. This state is too full of sheeple. We need a tsunami not just a tide-turning.

And what’s a better term for an opposite (and antidote) to Main Stream Media? New Stream Media (NSM), or Real Stream Media (RSM)?
Honored to be a lurker here. At Huffpo, dkos and several others. I fear we as a race fail to learn from our mistakes. We seem to make the same ones over and over. I thought our “Great American” system was created to evolve along with civilization as it moved forward. They built impeachment into the plan thinking forward about future crooks. But what I want to know is: If we can show he stole the election how come Gore or Kerry can’t just take over when we throw the chimp in jail????

LOL. Fit into a bunch of those, esp. TR!Probably a pretty kind contigent of Deadheads too.
angie, hiya back! yes, I read the block quote in an earlier thread. I had heard some of that about Deer Georgie’s kids’ names. This whole race is making my homelife a nightmare. Mr. Dana is often v. late at the office watching Hardball or Countdown or reading or getting quotations from people. GA is everywhere! Every day it’s “he said, she said”-would someone find the mailbox where the deer head was stuffed? That would be the winner. As we say ’round here, among GA’s many mistakes, one was not denying he would seek a presidential run. That has brought out what has been known but unpublished.
I jumped into this blogging thing with absolutely no clue about the techie side of it. I am still severly handicapped. I had my blog up for two months, posting rants and screeds mostly, no improvement there, but I did not know how to cut and paste URL’s into my browser, or even what a browser was. I actually wrote down the URL’s with pen and ink and painstakingly typed them in manually for links. I have pages and pages of these web addresses in notebooks.
Still, my blog is not very fancy, terrible to look at, a horrific name, but I like the challenge. The ladies of the lake have even allowed me some guest posts here. Good people are here, and I like good people.

“lurker” certainly works to describe the activity. Nothing else needs to be said – I’d call that good framing. :)
Hey firepups:
I’ve posted here a few times before, but I remain so dazzled by the collective intellect of all ownership and regular posters that I’d rather read what you all have to say.
I live in a small town east of Microsoft’s world headquarters in Redmond, WA. I read FDL because it’s the best.

In addition to the pretty spotlight icons, are we going to have icons for the different clubs? I want to join the Douglas Adams one. Can we have a contest to design the club icons? ;-)
waving to all … on the road but checking in
all those cool little icon thingies below the post are links to a wide selection of social network sites that allow you to recommend posts to other folks on those sites
The biggest one right now is Digg – you register at Digg and then when you see a post or a news article you think others should see, you “Digg” it – and posts, etc with the most “Diggs” move onto the Digg site front page.
FDL is way out in front by offering this option and it’s one way readers here can help encourage a wider public to read the info FDL highlights.
Engish is a language with great specificity, and rapid evolution of meaning.
Lurker was originally an internets word that carried a perjorative — now, it just means someone who reads blogs but doesn’t comment. And their ain’t nuttin’ wrong with dat . . .
That said, it’s always a happy happy occasion, when an appreciative reader chooses to de-lurk and post a greeting.

Probably be litigated ad nauseam ’til Gore and Kerry were in their graves.
Don’t know what the Supremes would make of it after the extent of time that has passed.
And in Gore’s case, the Supremes might just be too embarrassed to consider it. Probably invent their own Statute of Limitations to avoid looking under the rock.

Hi Arthur, I thought so too. But it seems like everything in Bush’s administration is like a coupon that will expire at the end of his term. No one ever thinks beyond that. Republicans won’t impeach him because, I think, they just want power. They don’t really care at what cost.

Never been to Tennessee myself, I’m more a WestCoaster, Eastcoaster (born in Ohio, grew up in Pittsburgh, moved to California when I was old enough to think), but welcome to you, TinT. We need thinking souls from anywhere and everywhere if we’re going to take this country back from the morons like Bush and his mindless minions.
The other comment thread is probably too overwhelmed, so I’ll introduce myself here.
I’m an Australian who discovered FDL via surfing links from progressive Aussie blogs. It’s great to see a political blog that not only gets angry and passionate, but gives concrete plans of action to its readers. The closest thing I can think of here is probably GetUp! but that’s just a campaigning site, without the blog aspect.
I generally don’t respond to anything here due to the flood of comments, but it’s good to get a progressive American perspective.
Keep fighting the good fight, guys!
OFG, you always have something of worth to offer! Like you, I’m no techie, but I try to keep up. My high school students can run circles around me, but I know how to find what I need!

Boy, I could write some of the nastiest, vilest, attack ads against Republicans the world has ever seen. In fact, they would probably be so horrendous, the world would never see them.
If I was a magic theropod and I could have one wish, it would be to see Pox News set ablaze and then drowned in the bathtub within a year. I feel that they remain deeply implicated in the rush to war in Iraq. They dragged the discussion to the far right fringe and called it “fair and balanced”.
I want to see them all necklaced.
Hi, TRex: Somewhat OT, but I was recently driving through the hills of East Tennessee on business when I passed this possible infringement of your inimitable trademark (though not a bad likeness, I thought) and dutifully recorded it with my camera phone thusly.

But, being a left coaster I am always late to the party, so I do have a question…it is a repeat actually,…how DO you edit a comment? Hey there jmba!
Seems that the Edit Comment function doesn’t work with IE (I’ve never gotten it working here), but with other folks who use non-IE browsers like Firefox, it seems to work fine.
Basically, the Edit Comment function allows you to edit your own comment up to 5 minutes after you post it.
There are probably some caveats with its usage (like did you F5 refresh?), but since I’ve never been able to use it, somebody else will have to jump in here and speak to those.
Workaround for folks like me on IE? Always use the Preview button. And I mean always! *g*

TRex,
haven’t read the comments, so I really hope someone addresses the difference between TRexing and trexing…
anyway, OT and apropos of the ‘bad crush’ thread and Johnny Knoxville. If you haven’t seen ‘The Ringer’ – do so. He’s goofy and endearing and it has the Special Olympics seal of approval. (one of the things the SO Pres. described was talking to some of the athletes about possibly casting Knoxville, they replied that it was perfect – because ‘Jackass’ fans would be the types that give them abuse, and that their lives would be golden if his fans heard him deliver the line “Don’t ever say that word [’tard] to me again!”
Haven’t listened to the commentary track yet, but his rapport with the two mentally challenged actors who join in was great, so I imagine it’s well worth the time (yup, I’m a big movie geek).

I was trying to put in a less-than 3 combo to say “heart”, but alas even the & lt ; version results in an attempt to html something and cuts off the rest of the post. I’ve edited to reflect my original sentiment ;0)
I have a great (of course I think it’s great) spare screen name for anyone out there to use – Gelo di Cervello. It sorta means “Brain Freeze” in Italian (not to be confused with the evil Italics). Though anyone wanting to adopt it probably should have a greatly over-sized ego – like me. ;-p
carolyn13 @ 196
FDL doesn’t automatically create links out of anything beginning with http, like Outlook and such. Click on the box marked “LINK” above the comment box, and it will first prompt you for the URL, and then for the text to be displayed. (If you just want the URL to be the text, just leave the second text field blank.)
One other note — when you use the link button (or any of the buttons above the comment box) the cursor seems to end up at the bottom of your text or the top afterwards, so if you’re typing more afterwards, you need to make sure you’re in the right place.
bdu @ 242

neurophius @ 251
It does work on IE, though which IE is a guessing game. I have the same IE (AFAIK, same updates) at the office, where it works, and at home, where it doesn’t. I have multiple layers of anti-spyware/blockers on the home computer though, and I think that is the difference.
TRex @ 248
Although I suspect, when in snark mode, it more likely refers to Les Nessmann’s broadcast on “WKRP” in which he borrows the phrase during the Thanksgiving show. :)

T-Rex: I have raised this before but with no response. Given my time zone (EDT plus 14) Late Night is about the only thread I can comment on while actually awake. If the FDL servers suffered last night and melted down on 8/8, can you imagine what will happen on election day? FDL will surely be a puddle on the server room floor.
I know servers cost $ and perhaps we can set up a fund to contribute to Jane and Christy’s server farm to keep FDL alive when we need it most. I’ll kick in $100 to start the ball rolling if Jane/Christy will create an account.
What d’ya reckon?

You’d need to take that up with Jane and Christy and Jamie, I suspect. Donations are always welcome, though, especially to Marcy’s book project!
I think on the whole we have a pretty solid system. That thing last night was a cache problem, I am told.
Beyond that, all the technospeak sounds like the teachers from the “Peanuts” specials to me.
neurophius @ 252
Heh. From a programming perspective, you can either spend your time on the thankless (and endless) task of trying to make your javascript work with both IE and everything else, or you can just make it work with (almost) everything else, save time for other projects, and know that it works with browsers that are available to everyone (including Mac users.)
TRex @

Dvorak? ME TOO! I loves me some Slavonic Dances. Got any other suggestions for me to listen to, TRex?
Mad Dogs @ 261
After submitting that comment, I realized, too late, that I had passed up an opportunity to say, “his products (i.e, IE)”
It would have been so much more elegant.
bdu @ 262
Great to hear! Us techies get a tad bit paranoid around stuff like fdisk. *g*
Ta!
TRex @ 269
Can you as an inside Theropod pass the idea on to the Ladies of the Lake. I have already made a contribution to the book project (the first day the appeal started). Many thanks.
In other news your line the other day about Dangerstein is perhaps the best line ever. Hall of Famer fer sure.
FDL Late Ns usually waaaay too late night for me ’cause I usually get up really EARLY. But tonight, given a very long day of travel and work and the fact that my hotel was overbooked and I had to wait nearly an hour for them to find me a room, which they finally did — an executive suite, no less — so why sleep now?
Great room. Anderson Cooper on the tube. A pepperoni lover’s pizza. And T-Rex and Late Night. Wow! BTW, T-Rex, thanks for the ice. It’s chilling a bottle of chardonnay.
One of the topics that’s come up tonight, as well as last, is the need to find a better word for lurkers. Well, as someone who lurked for a long time before finally “coming out” for the Cheney-Shooter poetry jam (hey, Jane and Christy, dontcha think it’s time for another poetry fest — we could call it Tortured Rhymes.)
Anyway, before the poetry thingy, I never thought of myself as a lurker. It was more like sitting in the gallery at church. You could sing if you wanted to but didn’t have to and no one would really notice.
So maybe we change lurkers to The Gallery. Just because they’re not in the choir, they’re still part of the congregation. And as we saw last night, when they want to, boy can they sing!
To everyone in the Gallery, glad you decided to chime in. It’s such a joyful noise.
Please permit me to leave one little pebble here and to confess that I do check your site daily. Thanks to you and all who come to FDL to support you.
Redshift @ 245
Thanks, Redshift. (Love that name.) FDL is a really nice place. I’ll drop in to chat more often and I’ll always be lurking. Now I’m off to bed. Night all.
Mad Dogs @ 270
Just for the record, it comes from way back (when I was more windows than *nix), it came to me that fdisk was a rather good curse word. It’s got all the plosive power of our best curses, and a meaning associated with something bad (having to repartition your disk). So, yeah.
And real geeks will recognize the front page as being a modern take on a familiar old CLI…
LatteSippingLefty @ 267
I beg to differ, given the Phone Cops (they play hardball you know).
Thanks for a great thread T-Rex and good night or good morning firepups, it’s still working hours and I better do some.
Sarah Deere @ 275
And from one little pebble, a mountain grows!

While our Democratic leaders are rarely outspoken enough for my taste, keep in mind one thing before condemning them too harshly on this:
The party leaders have a message (sometimes) and have to convince those with a megaphone that it is worth focusing on (and abandoning their standard storylines about the Dems.)
Olbermann, Eminem and others have a megaphone, and just have to decide to broadcast that message.
Yes, they have to do a good job to make it successful (in either case), but it’s undeniable that if you’re starting with only one, the message is much easier to acquire than the megaphone.
I thought maybe “Oh, the humanity” might have been what Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (LfL-White House) said upon first seeing The Kiss Float…
bdu @ 277
Oh the days of 64K or RAM, CP/M, SuperCalc, WordStar, and 8 inch floppies (no non-techies, it’s not what you think *g*).
Now what in the hell did I do with those punch cards…and how many times I dropped a stack of them on the floor. Yikes!
so is somebody conducting cyber warfare here, or is it an anomoly, or….?
W – “I didn’t do it.”
Clearly I should’ve previewed my comment at 276. The garbled opening should have been FDL Late Night is usually to late for me… Sorry.

I really like it!
And Christy would be happy if there was a Peanut Gallery.

Peanut Gallery… Har-Har! Good one.
Jacqrat @ 271
Ohhhhhh, this recording of the Piano Quintet is teh die 4!!
You can’t go wrong with Dvorak, though. I’ve never heard bad Dvorak.
Oh, wait, I take that back. Peter Tiboris somehow conducts Dvorak into sounding as bland as Mozart. Insipid!
alittlemusicalityplease @ 274
I’ve had that happen occasionally. The most spectacular was when Ms. Redshift and I were traveling to a wedding, and late after a long drive, checked in for our basic hotel room, with the clerks muttering to each other “Well, just give them that room…”
We opened the door to our room, and were a bit perturbed to see no bed in sight.
Then we noticed the spiral staircase, and went up to find the kingsize bed and jacuzzi!
And as a plus, the next night after the wedding, we knew exactly where the bride and groom were staying… *g*
neurophius @ 284
At first he hoped it was a present from Junya, but alas twas not to be.
Unrequited love is such a bummer. Have a beer Joe and drown our sorrows. *g*
One more screen (or band, for that matter) name for the taking tonight – The Standard Deviations.
Evening FDL’ers!
I do not have problems in IE (Exployer) with the “Edit This Comment” feature, works fine for me. Sometimes it will take a few extra seconds to load it in the comment box though, especially on longer threads.
The editing time available does expire after 5 minutes. It immediately expires or disables if you refresh the whole page (or F5 refresh), or hit a link or move off the page, before you’ve selected Edit This Comment. Try to edit before taking any further actions which might disable the editing feature for that comment.
Evil Parallel Universe @ 293
Hmm, I sort of like “The Standard Deviant” better. :)
Aha, I thought Dvorak was that guy who wrote for that computer magazine a few years back. Back to the lowbrows like the DKs, Pistols, or Minor Threat for me!
You guys are great! –Great community.Great Ideas.Great Inspiration.Great Minds.
Just lurkers, but love the idea of “Gallery.” If I knew how to do it,
I’d send the postcard our little group called Coalition for Change is
mailing this week to neighbors on our various precinct lists comparing Lt.Col.Charlie Brown to John Doo-little. We are a group of about 10-20 people, non-partisan (well, not the two of us, really) working to unseat that corrupt “friend” of Abramoff and Bush here in very conservative El Dorado County, District 4, California. The “devil” himself is coming to El Dorado Hills on Tuesday for the gold-plated Doolittle luncheon: Come on out for the protest!
Thank you for all you do here at FDL.
somenobody @ 295
Aw, Minor Threat. Little baby Ian McKaye!
Aaaangry little baby Ian McKaye.
Redshift @ 291
So it was the Princess Bride Suite. How cool! Well, no spiral staircase here. A little balcony and French doors to the separate bedroom, that’s it, but it’s more than enough after a rugged day.
TRex @ 299
Very angry indeed; has been calming me down for 20 some years. Everytime I hear “Small Man, Big Mouth” I think of our vainglorious leader.
Mad Dogs @ 280
You blew your stack! I don’t quite go back that far… but the truly sad thing is that I actually keep instances of some of these old boxes in working order. There’s just something about Software Aided Mouth, or a good SID chiptune.
You ever play an Atari 2600 on a big plasma HDTV? There’s nothing like it!

I think that video is so beautiful. I was just watching it one more time before bed.
I forgot to add “Look Back and Laugh” with the lyric I taught my daughter:
“Mr. President, go away. Come and F___ with us some other day.” Just the first sentence though, just in case we somehow see him. You never know when the chance for good fun will occur, so be prepared.
TRex @ 299
If you haven’t, you should really rent/netflix/greencine/whatever the whole Cunningham video collection DVD… it’s all that good (though certainly not all that calm).
Did I imagine there were ove 600 comments here, or were there actually over 600 comments here? I’m showing 303 for the one I’m currently posting….?.
Ed*ard Teller @ 305
We had 605 last night, or something like that. I’m showing 300 or so tonight. So unless there is a phantom wall of comments I am unaware of, you’ve got your nights mixed up, ET.
The 600+ was last night’s Late Night, ET
TRex,
Boy, do I!
Long days can do that, eh? I feel totally hamfisted, and my hands are shorter than your fingernail clippings. I posted stuff for this thread at the end of your awesome post from last night.
Self-EPU’d (we need a new term here, maybe):
Long day and only enough time to appreciate for the second day in a row that an article for the New York Times Book Review needs to be written titled “Are Gay 20-meter Sauropods smarter?” Or something along those lines….
Anybody out there to help on this? Lamont’s poeple are running a classic 30-second radio spot:
http://www.nedlamont.com/page/invite/callinginsick
listen to it. It is almost ROFLMHO.
I’m pushing Diane Benson’s campaign in Alaska against Don Young for our sole house seat to craft a version of that ad for her campaign.
Any ideas for content or variation on approach?
Ed*ard Teller @ 308
Now that’s what I call EPU’ing yourself in the foot.
Next time I post a comment on the wrong (previous) thread (which I have done on occasion), I’m going to say, “Oops, I E*T’d myself!”
A wee bit OT, but folks ought to read what Glenn Greenwald had to say in his comments this evening (not in his front page stuff):
“Whether legislation authorizing illegal warrantless spying and illegal torture passes in the lame duck session . . .
Nobody be mad at me, because I’m just the messenger on this, but that torture bill is passing. Period. It’s as close to being a fait accompli has possible without having already happened.
Filibuster is not even an option which Democrats are considering (a real filibuster, I mean – they might get a few Senators to do a half-hearted filibuster that has no chance of blocking anything, like Kerry did with the Alito nomination). The only question now is (a) will there be a single GOP Senator to vote against it (I guess no) and (b) how many Democrats will vote against it (I predict a split caucus – something like 20-24, but that is just a wild guess).
But that bill is passing. Just accept it. It will be less disappointing than holding out false hopes of a filibuster that’s just not happening.
Personally, I think the only thing that saved us from passage of a FISA bill (if one doesn’t pass) is this scheduling problem. At this point, I don’t think Democrats would have been any more willing to filibuster warrantless eavesdropping than they were torture and detention (unless if were the Specter bill undiluted, given Reid’s promise, but I’m not even totally convinced about that).
Whatever anyone wants to say about Democrats is not extreme enough (I’m getting attacked over and over at Salon for the Blasphemous Crime of Criticizing Democrats). Their cowardice (or, worse, their lack of any real objections to these bills) is so pitiful it is hard to put into words.
I guess the question is whether one thinks that a Democratic takeover – just in order to create some logjam in our government and give John Conyers and Henry Waxman (or Pat Leahy) subpoena power to investigate all of these crimes is worth caring about the outcome of the election. For me it is – and it’s not really a close call – since I still believe that the country and the government can be saved and the first order of business is putting limits on ths Bush crowd and shining light on what they ‘ve been doing — but I really couldn’t criticize too aggressively those who conclude otherwise.
Glenn Greenwald | 09.26.06 – 10:02 pm”

I do go a ways back. Even remember using plugs and plugboards in highschool.
Was a big fan of DRI’s stuff like GEM Desktop, DR Draw, DR Write, etc. Once showed a colleague how I could run Windows 1.0 under GEM.
And now since it is 2:00 AM here, I best be getting some zzz’s.
Nite all!
And Ta for the company!
Mad Dogs @ 312
I’ve had the feeling that the push is on, too. Hate to say it, but….
Funny thing, but it would be a perfect time to work a filibuster. Virtually all of these people are feeling the pressure to get back to their districts and press the flesh and collect campaign cash for ads. Anything that could possibly extend the session is something they don’t want to do. Perfect opportunity for Dems. Give `em an opportunity for some good speeches on national ethics, etc.
But, I don’t see it happening, either. And, every time I think I understand why, I get upset.
I’m another lurker here. Reading since the days over at blogspot when it was impressive to have 100 comments on a thread. Now FDL’s publishing books?!! Wow.
I try to join in on the discussion every once and a while if I feel I can add a piece of insight from my perspective (Earth scientist, former journalist and newspaper editor).
This place is certainly a welcoming place and an addictive way to get lost in intelligent thought and analysis.
There have definately been days where FDL was the place to be to discuss and analyze the goings on of the day and also the reporting of the goings on of the day. It’s days like those I am most excited about this place and I don’t get any work done at all. But it’s certainly worth it.
Now somehow it seems I’m a day behind on my FDL reading and I’ve totally missed the delurking session.
Keep up the good work my friends.
But before I go, can anybody explain this? Whenever Juan Carlos has to go No. 2, he gets in the box and just WAILS, “Ohhhhhhhhhh, fie upon me! Oh, woe!!!”
And then when he’s done, he LEAPS from the box and tears around the house? Like, “Oh, GOD! Did THAT come out of ME?!”
I swear. They’re from space.
I spent a lot of my free time today with unrepentant Greens who view this election as the most important in our country’s history.
First of all, our party – even in Alaska, where it once represented almost 7% of registered voters – isn’t working. Secondly, we’re only back in the game with the Dems because of the netroot progress. Thirdly, we are helping a lot, and not just in Alaska. The only favor we ask is that once the Dems clean house outside their party, they clean house within their party.
If you can do that, we’ll sign up as members, rather than as temporary allies.

Jumping in at the end here to say that I was at a Ned Lamont meetup tonight in Santa Monica with Jane, and John “Crooks&Liars” Amato.
Oh, and Mickey Kaus.
Oh, and TRex, I talked to your brother today. He actually sounds human. Not saurian like you. Weird.
SteveAudio @ 329
What did Kaus pretend to be doing there? Slumming, was he? :)
He goes to just about any political-flavored event. I’ve seen him at many things out here before, never really talked much before tonight. He’s actually quite nice, and funny.
I told him that I had taken a shot at him earlier this year, and he said that he had seen it, and laughed.

Or, “come on Steve, did you learn anything to share which will help us throw these scumbags out?”
Evil Parallel Universe @ 225
Hokay. Expose me as the Queen of Slow on the Uptake.
Mind you, I did Google EPU. Got a lot of government acronyms and the like. But I kept watching posts that mentioned getting EPU’d, hoping to snag a clue.
Finally I saw a post with your handle and deduced a connection. Sort of. Your posts were wise, so getting EPU’d couldn’t be bad. Unless. . . Sir Evil Parallel Universe chanced to be an FDL monitor. Maybe you, from your lofty throne, chose to send certain posts into neverland. And when a poster mentioned being EPU’d, he/she was trying a revised, pass-the-muster version.
Either that or your handle happened to coincide with an experience we’ve all had . . . posting something and sending it off by unknown means or error into an evil parallel universe (neverland).
Well, I was trying to figure it out. Wish I’d known what it really meant. I’m a Left Coaster and a night rider, meaning that most of my posts wind up at the tail ends of threads. Now I know that I can EPU on a new thread, on the off-chance I ever write something worth resurrecting.
This post will not be EPU’d!
ET 335:
I took some notes, then arranged with Ned to do an email interview with him, which I’ll put up at HuffPo.
Did I learn anything? Well, from someone on Ned’s campaign, I heard some unattributes Lieberman stuff, just goes to further the perception of hubris, and out of touch.

SteveAudio,
Did you listen to the Lamont radio ad I posted at # 311. Ideas?
General Election all 50 States:
1 month, 10 days, 15 hours, 20 minutes, and 31 seconds
ET:
Listened to it, frankly I’m not sure..some people will clearly find it amusing, but I worry that some fence-sitters might find it too snarky.
But hey, what do I know?
SteveAudio @
340
Interesting. The things that came out when we took it apart today were the lack of rhythm and lack of momentum, as in gaining impetus throughout. Is it negative? (that was something we didn’t address)
I’m not sure, ET. First thing I thought of would have been to start with the VO, rahter than with the actor:
“JL has missed 1 of every 4 votes”
[ring ring] Um, sorry, I have herpes, can’t come in]
Know what I mean?
SteveAudio @
342
Your point was brought up.
I stressed that the thing we produce should sound like somebody discovering a liar’s voicemail, which the ad sort of does.
Ed*ard Teller @ 341
Something like, “Don, this is Alaska. We know you’re there. Pick up the phone, Don….” :)
ET 343:
I’m a little conservative when it comes to media, and tend to think really inside the box, so take that for what it’s worth.
I would have suggested:
[kindly sounding VO] “Here in CT, we expect our Senators to work hard for us, and to show up everyday for work. But JL has only shown up 1 out of every 4 times for a vote.”
cue JL: “As a Senator, I think blah blah blah…”
that kind of thing. But that’s just me.
closing confession:
I may be more guilty than any other doggie here of the fault of ending sentences with prepositions.
To quote
George W Bush– Winston Churchill,“That Sir, is an insult up with which I shall not put.”

Let it pass.
Because…And let there be no doubt about this…When America is stripped from the jackals and their thuggish minions and the rule of law is restored with liberty and justice for all, such legal chicanery will be revoked, the acts permitted within them returning to their former and deservedly ignominious status, and thus all criminal orders given and acts committed during the brief period of reality avoidance once again ILLEGAL AS F*CK…
There will be no aerie high enough, or wormhole deep enough to avoid the dire consequences.

Good morning Beard5,
It’s cool here in NJ, with the promise of another fair day. Too many deadlines this week at work, so I haven’t been able to read through all the comments.
Forgot to mention in yesterday’s de-lurking thread how much I enjoy the recipes, book and music suggestions, and other everyday-life comments that people share here at the ‘Lake. I also appreciate how much people are willing to share about difficult times–and I appreciate even more how much kindness is extended by everyone. I’ll read a comment by one person that asks a someone else “how are you doing now.” Please say please, and thank you, and ask about you here at FDL. And laugh at jokes and snarque.
Have a good day, everyone, and keep working for peace.
And good morning to you, Old Sow!
Good morning OS, and NJP! I’ve got the Guatemalan coffee steaming through the house (always a good thing) Muffins have come out of the oven (another good thing) And I’ve gotten another huge chunk of Celtic knotwork, on this scribal thingie done (a hugely good thing)
Still messing with the computer, trying to get the damned camera to work so that I can take a picture of this thing, it’s too big for the scanner bed.
Beardy & NJ & Alison–cheers (raises coffee mug-Zapatista espresso roast)Think I’ll check out some comments above. I’m sure I have something to learn…..
Hello beard and OS and Alison and NJpro and….

Good morning Imm! and yes, I’ve got both brain and tv off. (Can’t stand the morning CNN anymore, it’s like they released too much stupid gas into the studio)
Just to echo the comments of a few others above–the Jordan Barab post & its comments thread were great. I’m a member of AFCSME again after being a freelancer for a few years. The dues are minimal, and the work they do–locally, statewide, and nationally–is great.

I need some help
in a discussion someone is saying clarke said himself no plan was given to bush
I have the think progress links that prove that he did, but I also have a google search that says clarke said he didn’t
does anyone have data on that claim?
{clears throat, assumes best Robin Williams voice}
GOOD MORNING FDL! It’s actually below 70 degrees here, so there may be hope that cooler weather will come and stay for a while. I’m off to work, so y’all have a great day, you hear?
me to me — I’ll poke around after I get kids to school, but I think it wasn’t up to Clarke to do so, that it was actually higher up the food chain. For some reason I think I recall Madeleine Albright actually saying something to the effect that “they” gave materials to the Bushies. You might check that chain instead; I suspect that opposition folks are trying to go after foot soldiers because they can’t take down higher-ups.
Hang in there.
Just watched that sack of dung William Bennett on Today Show, blabbing off about the NIE. Sure – like anybody listens to that moron any longer. They don’t even have any credible firepower any longer to do battle.
Good morning, people. First sip of coffee…
I made an early (11 is early, right?) night of it last night, so I have some catching up to do. Off to do that now.
MOSH!
Hi, all. Just dropping in to say good morning. Short night for me. My last comment here was 300, so I only got to sleep to 64 comments. Oh, well. Time to grab my coffee and go. Cheers.
Imus gave Chris Wallace a chance to CYA this morn. Emails, the emails made him do it. Yeah, Rush, Roger, Rove…hmmmm what other rabid RW Rethugs could he have heard from?
Wallace says well, lawsy me, don’ know why he got so upset….
Then that Clinton could’ve gone ahead even without the CIA sign-off since he’s the boss. Gee, go ahead and bomb the shit out of a country because it’s in your gut? Hmmmm. Seems that’s been done. And look how well that turned out.
Later talking to NBC WH corres Kelly O’Donnell about the NIE release and McCord the sidekick talks about the other causes that led to Iraq erupting…poverty, etc. Spinning the Rethug line that hey, it wasn’t our fault.
Yeah, right, it was Bush who threw the lighted torch into the haybarn. Of Iraq, and in the campaign season of Clinton for that proxy war. And now they’re “surprised” at the blowback? We couldn’t have anticipated….
Debriefing the gaaacckkk so you don’t have to.
PS you are a queen to do so so the rest of us don’t have to. “It was Bush who threw the lighted torch into the haybarn.” Amen to that! That whole crew in DC just gives me the willies. They are so blindsided by their own reflected glory and “rightness”. A pox on all their houses.
All the Power He’ll Ever Need
Here’s something I’m not sure we knew – that in the detainee bill is a provision that legally endorses the war on terror as equivalent to war…with this, he won’t have to bother with pesky things like the wiretapping bill – or at least that will be his argument.
Sickening.
Thanks Anne. What a cold shower that little article is!! To the phones once again!!

**falls to the floor from sheer gratitude** Oh, THANK you!
Garrison Keillor has a really nice essay up on Salon.com this morning. Among his observations:
“But the camera can be fearfully truthful. Look at the picture of the Current Occupant, reading a speech to the troops at Camp Pendleton, wearing a zip-up jacket with little epaulets on the shoulders, a presidential seal sewn on the right breast, and on the left breast the words “George W. Bush, Commander in Chief.” Is this for his benefit or that of the troops? No president ever needed to wear a name tag before. He is the first. Insecurity is written all over him. Look at Dick Cheney. No need for a name tag there.”
The essay is at:
http://salon.com/opinion/featu…..7/keillor/
prairiesunshine, I meant that. No snark. I also sent it to a few friends. It’s time they started seeing things, or at least reading/hearing how WE perceive reality. I hope it shocks them awake.
Over at huffpo, Dave Johnson tells high-level dems…and the rest of us…to watch our backs. The high-level dems don’t realize, WE (I can only speak for myself… at least *I*) have been trying to watch their backs for them, but that back, spineless as it has been over the last few years, keeps slithering away.
Mornin’.
good morning, egregious.
LindyH — woohoo!!! MOSH!!
You know, I wore a black hoodie when I voted in 2004. I wore that black hoodie to 3 protest rallies – 2 against Bush, 1 against Cheney.
(Better quality vid at the link I just posted here, the Google one isn’t quite as good since text in graphics isn’t as crisp.)

Rayne, you’re right. Thanks! I think I went to google cause they put the file out for download. Of course, you need the google player to play it. But it’s on my playlist every day. And the black hoodie is a wonderful idea. I don’t suppose I can get away with wearing it when I perform my polling commissioner duties. *sigh*

Email him. Ask him. he has a website. I think it’s “securing America” or you may try googling “WESPAC”
I suck at net research (which is why I rely on all of you, bless you), but I doubt his site will be hard to find
ahhh… coffee!
Morning, all…
LindyH — Go on, wear your hoodie with pride. You think the old ladies working the polls are going to grok the significance of a black hoodie?
Only those of us who would appreciate the significance of MOSH would grok it, and they’re the ones who need to see it, to know that somebody on the other side of the table is working for them to keep it real.
I’ll be wearing my hoodie when I do voter flushing on Election Day, phonebanking voters to make sure they get out, giving rides to seniors. They won’t get it, but I will, and that’ll be enough.

Morning, gang. New thread up and ready for you guys. More coffee now…
me to me — think I found what you were looking for, although it only provides support, not the plan itself.
TIME Magazine: They Had A Plan (04-AUG-2002)
Another lurker here. I have several favorite progressive blogs that I visit daily, and this is of course one of them. Love the comments, too. I seldom write, being shy and not quick on my feet, but am an involved and informed leftie. Even if you don’t hear from me, I am here. One question: It looks like most elected officials now have violated their Constitutional oaths of office. Can we arrest them?
Were any questions actually answered in this thread? After lurking for quite awhile I was excited about having some guidance but all that seems to have turned up here is various regulars commenting to and about other regulars. Is there a REAL introductory thread somewhere?
motocat — ah, if it were only so easy. They’d actually have to commit a felony for them to be frog-marched out of office, not just abrogate their oaths.
Kind of like violate one’s marriage vows – as much as the offended spouse might like to see the other arrested, they can’t call 911.
Binx — keeping commenters (regulars or newly emerged) on task is a bit like herding cats; discussion is an organic process. The previous evening’s Late Nite must have struck a chord with the crowd because they came out as bidden. But last night the mood was gone; folks didn’t ask questions of the kind TRex suggested, and the regulars must have had other things on their minds.
Did you have something in particular you wanted to ask? I can try to help, although it’s deep in the EPU Zone here.
[”EPU Zone” = the tail-end of a comment thread where comment traffic thins out and ends after a new blog post and comment thread have begun; so named for a FDL regular, Evil Parallel Universe (EPU), who often left a pithy comment at the tail-end of a thread that other regulars might have missed because they had moved on to the next thread.]
Now that the Democrats have announced their intentions to roll over and stick their legs in the air w/r/t the torture bill, WH is packing in every orwellian clause they can dream up. Upthread I read something about endorsing GWoT as real war, which means we have been invaded, which suspends various constitutional guarantees — Cheney’s dream come true. Our constitution is indeed circling the bowl.
Marty Lederman has more.
OT-Help me solve a mystery. Last night between 11:00 and midnight I was channel surfing during a commercial break on either Stewart or Colbert. Clicked on Fox News and there was a banner saying that Iran had agreed to stop enriching uranium. Then they cut to commercial. Switched to CNN, nothing….switched to MSNBC, nothing. Finished watching Stewart/Colbert. This morning I expected it to be all over the news, but, alas, nothing. Did anyone else see this? Anyone Ti-Vo Fox news? Can anyone shed some light on this?
I missed the de-lurking thread, so just saying hi.
Binx @ 383
I’m not sure I read through the whole thing before I jumped in, but were there any questions asked? What did you want to know?
I just recently in the last 4 or 5 months have been turned on to the blogs, I honestly never knew many people out there had a place that they could share their common ideas
Hi, T-Rex and FDL-ers-
I didn’t get to post sooner because I am just swamped at work. I first came to FDL over a year ago because I read some very mean-spirited comments about Patrick Fitzgerald by that crabby bitch, Clarice Feldman. I needed to balance that out with some good vibes.
I have stayed because you, Christy, Jane and the regulars are just great! Very knowledgable and insightful. Thanks for letting me hang out!
I read a lot from work (shhhh!)
FDL keeps me somewhat sane in these less than sane times. Since I work crazy hours, I’m always catching TRex’s rants and enjoy them with a good LOL!
I cannot post comments at work due to corporate censorship.
Sadly enough, I work for one of the networks and can only post a message when at home.
PEACE
I started reading FDL soon after it started (Atrios link, I believe). Anyway, it was the place to go for Plame info. I was infuriated at the Plame disclosure treason as my son (now retired after 20 yrs) is an AF veteran, and served in both those damn mid-east wars. Jane and Christy almost match my fury with their passionate furies. When Bush did his ‘Bring it on’ stupidity, I really almost lost it. Thank you so much for all your good work – you cannot know how very much I appreciate how much you do. lq
– THANKS FOR THE USER TIP. IM HOME SCHOOLING MMYSELF HERE — AND ITS GOOD I DONT SEE HOPW HIGH THE STACK OF TEXTBOOKS REALLY ARE. LOL. WONDERFUL PEOPLE MAKE THIS OLD MAN A HAPPY LURKER.
I’m a long-time lurker from way back in the Blogspot days, actually even the pre-Christy days, and this is my first comment (just have no time, you know?) I know I’m very late to this game, but I’ve been in the hospital for a week (it’s a long story, but I’m fine) and am just catching up. I just wanted to tell you I love your blog. I really loved it when it was Jane and Christy; as an attorney who also has been obsessed with the insanity that was and is Plamegate, I have been an avid reader of Christy’s astute analysis. Finally, I have enjoyed the changes and additions, but I have to say that the addition of TRex is just the best. I love, love, love you, TRex, you big toothy monster!
