I live in Saint Petersburg, too. Close to bayfront. And I am a survivor of child abuse at the hands of a spinoff of STRAIGHT, CEDU. I didn’t smoke or drink, but my mother, a bornagain fundie didn’t like how I went goth and sent me to the CEDU ASCENT program in no-child-abuse-laws, Idaho. At 14 years old, corn-fed and prep-school educated, I survived those torture techniques, and it is real brainwashing, and it happened and continues to happen in america and around the world. Children, like I was, are sent to these places by parents wanting to pay others to raise their kids for them. Once kids are at these programs, their communication is cut off from the outside world, and parents are instructed by the institutions to ignore whatever they hear from their kids, on the rare, restricted, monitored times which they speak to them over the phone. Say, a half hour every month, with an employee listening on the line, ready to cut things off if they don’t like what they are hearing. I strongly suspect that children at these institutions were used as guinea pigs for research and development of mind-shattering and mind-control. It truly is as close as possible as one can come to commiting psychic murder upon another. I strongly suspect that this ties in somehow with the CIA’s 40 year history of researching and developing psychological torture, although the torture I experienced was more intense, thorough, and personality-erasing/rewriting than the methods being used at Gitmo and other places. Less physical, much more humiliating and degrading. It turns your mind inside out. I’m glad, and grateful, that FDL has mentioned this. There is less than zero chance of any kind of justice for me or any of the hundreds of thousands like me. I haven’t been the survivor of a “socially acceptable” tragedy, and with no understanding, much less support or comfort of anyone, for indeed nobody is aware of these things but the people who went through them and the few who actually give a damn, most people like me kill ourselves or let heroin or whatnot do it for us. Well, I hope somebody reads this.

Firewall by Lawrence Walsh is an overlooked tome in that department…And yes, Iran-Contra was complex, but could be broken down into digestable bits, should the public have showed an interest, which in my opinion they did not:

Dealing arms to Iran, a ‘rogue nation’ - Treason, according to the U.S. constitution.

Deliberate violation of the Boland amendment - Contempt of Congress.

Bush 41’s pardon of Weinberger et al, calling them ‘patriots’ and lamenting the ‘criminalization of policy differences’ - A top-shelf coverup, gaming the system to cover one’s own ass which would no doubt have been next in the dock.

…And, of course the long term damage done to America by allowing the wholesale importation of narcotics into the U.S. to finance the contra efforts.

I always have a little chuckle whenever I hear a Republican rail on about the ‘Drug War’, as a result.

darkblack- did you watch M.T.Wheeler at the Plame panel at yKos? I can’t quote what she said verbatim, but it was something to the effect that she wanted to make sure that the Plame scandal did not go the way of the Iran-Contra scandal- as in people generally were so overwhelmed by the details, that they really didn’t *get it*. Maybe a reprise of Iran-Contra should me the NEXT M.T. Wheeler book.
