For the week ending 9/23/06:
"Information Transit got the wrong man. I got the right man. The wrong one was delivered to me as the right man, I accepted him on good faith as the right man. Was I wrong?" – Jack Lint, Brazil
Bitter, moi? Oh, you bet. Disgusted? More than you can possibly imagine. Ashamed of my country? Wooo cow. For [mumble mumble] years, I lived in a place where rule of law and respect for humanity was supposed to be the norm, not the exception. One day, all that changed. No, not on September 11, 2001, as so many of today’s bloodless, questionably elected officials and fatuous, preening pundits would have you believe. The only things that changed on that day were the horrible (and quite possibly avoidable) deaths of nearly 3,000 citizens of the world and the destruction of some buildings. No, everything changed last Thursday, September 21, 2006, when three Republican senators agreed to sign away the last vestiges of this country’s greatness to the one person less qualifed than a half-digested Almond Joy to be President. Vesting the power to decide issues of torture and the rights of prisoners in the Boy King? It’s like Warner, McCain and Graham put a bottle of Bombay Sapphire in front of a wife-beating drunk and said, "Use your discretion." In fact, it’s very, very, very much like that.
And the Democrats? The Democrats, whose idea of "political judo" is to fall down and pin themselves on the mat before their opponents have even donned their gis? Well, they thought they were being clever to keep mum while the Three Amigos gave up the farm. Oh, they were probably just trying to keep their powder dry. At this point, the Democrats have enough dry powder that their courtier wigs will never go wanting when the United States reverts to a 17th century monarchy.
Had the week just been limited to the demise of habeas corpus and the "non-gutting" gutting of the Geneva Conventions, I might have been a little less nauseated. But alas, that was not to be. Bush went before the United Nations to condescend to people far, far smarter than he. The human metro(g)nome once again delivered his call to war, masked as a lecture on Iran’s history lifted straight from Encyclopedia Britannica, in his "three words at a time because that’s all I can read on each teleprompter, given the fact that I have a ball bearing for a brain" cadence to an icy cold audience. Yes, I’m sure the people of Iran are proud of their ancient culture, you supercilious, facile dickhead. They’d rather you not blow it back to the Stone Age, which you’re clearly itching to do. Christ, all the world’s just a giant frog patiently waiting for you to jam a stick of dynamite up its ass.
And then there was George "Ham Sammich" Allen. But I’ll leave that for last. Heh.
Onward.
As is usually the case, the Rude One grabs the truth by its ears and twists. Hard.
The fact that anyone thought for two seconds that we were watching honorable men confront the evil wrought by a president from their own party is a pathetic statement on just how debased politics has become in this country. . . .For if John McCain actually gave a rat’s ass about torture, then he would not have voted to confirm Alberto Gonzales or Samuel Alito. If Lindsey Graham gave a happy monkey fuck about the rights of detainees, then he wouldn’t have authored an amendment limiting their rights of appeal. And Warner, despite his reputation as a moderate in some of his statements, almost always goes along with the herd, so, you know, fuck him, too.
Charlie Pierce at TAPPED then kicks the limp body of the Democratic Party to the curb:
The national Democratic Party is no longer worth the cement needed to sink it to the bottom of the sea. For an entire week, it allowed a debate on changing the soul of the country to be conducted intramurally between the Torture Porn and Useful Idiot wings of the Republican Party, the latter best exemplified by John McCain, who keeps fashioning his apparently fathomless ambition into a pair of clown shoes with which he can do the monkey dance across the national stage.
Michael Berube offers up an innovative new game to celebrate the death of the United States. "Let’s pretend there’s an opposition party!"
D r i f t g l a s s, that hopeless optimist, holds on to the slightest glimmer of hope for the Credo . . . I mean, Democrats. Brad R. at Sadly, No! begs the Democrats to stop acting like . . . well, the Democrats we’ve come to know and loathe. (P.S. The accompanying photograph is enough to make me run off to a Renaissance fair.) And Stranger at Blah3 tries to lure the Dems away from the poisoned bait.
TBogg engages in some incredibly sastifying pundit-pounding, while Billmon proves that brevity = wit. (Given the subject matter, I opted to leave out the "soul.") And Quiddity at uggabugga establishes the Broder Matrix. It’s quite the handy guide for interpreting the calculus of right wing punditry.
Norbizness gives us the Cliff Notes version of the Preznit’s U.N. yawner. And while we didn’t get a good look at any of the Preznit’s bathroom break requests, Attaturk at Rising Hegemon found some of his doodles.
Hairy Fish Nuts acquaints us with a hardcore Bush supporter, someone who probably has no problem with the disconnect between "being a good Christian" and beating the crap out of detainees. Shame about that kiddie porn, Coach.
And then there was the Pope who, like George Allen, doesn’t know when to stop digging. Attaturk discovered an open letter from the Pope to the people of Islam.
Okay, I can’t hold out any longer. George Allen out-macacaed himself this week with his stunning revelations that his mother, despite being a closeted Jewy Jew, makes really good pork chops. Georgie, you meshugeh you!
Somebody named watertiger at Dependable Renegade provides a "How to Be a Jew" primer for Mr. Allen, while Lindsay at Majikthise goes all trafe on his ass. Jesus’ Favorite General sends a message from the Son of God to George.
And elsewhere, Cervantes at Stayin’ Alive gets inside the minds of the 33 Percenters, while Kieran Healy of Crooked Timber made me laugh. Out loud. Actually, I wound up spitting out the coffee I was trying to drink.

HAVE YOU HAD ENOUGH, WATERTIGER!!

ccmask @ 3
What’d I do??
And yes, by the way, I’ve HAD ENOUGH. I’ve been in a foul mood all week watching the pro-torture people destroy this country. Great. So much for everything I was raised to believe about America.
Fitz! wt! Big Dog! Christy!
Sunday! Funny car!
Hey wt, why don’t you and TRex get married? Oh yeah, never mind…
America, do you want the Brownies and Bushes of the world to decide issues of torture?

Just because I never update my blog, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t link to me. For shame, WT!

Kenosha, I actually pulled your 9/11 post for linkage, then realized it was too old.
Just sayin’.

Boy, if there ever was a film that is topical Right Now it’s “Brazil”.
Hollywood tried to bury it but it just wouldn’t stay buried. It’s actually a better film than “V for Vendetta” and just as topical. If anybody by some chance hasn’t seen “Brazil” go get it. One of the few movies I know of that has Robert DeNiro in a cameo role
Sharkbabe @ 10
Sharkie,
I’m blushing from that comment you wrote to me last night. I’ll wear it like a badge of honor though.

Watertiger your picture and post here featuring Macaca had me quite literally ROTFLMAO. Your work is just… amazing.
veruca: Sorry I didn’t answer. I was busy reading the links. I said darnit veruca because you beat me to the #1 spot! That’s all.
Just had to drag back one of the money quotes from TAPPED. It’s true – the dems were more pissed at Chavez for callling Bush the devil than they were at the devil himself for delivering that warm spit on their faces.

Scarecrow – this is a tour de force.
All of the charity work in the world by Clinton will mean nothing if he sits back and allows this country to slide into fascism while collecting big checks for his foundation.
We desperately need Clinton to get his eye back on the ball. The blogger meeting was certainly a great start.
I pray that this is the start of serious coordination between Clinton and the progressive blogosphere.

The democratic members of congress have been vewy, vewy quiet this week. Call me a fool, but I’m hoping they have a surprise in store for the gop. Sorta like the procedural move Reid pulled and shut down the senate until the repubs promised part 2 of the ssci. (The goopers didn’t live up to their end, but Reid did what he could.)
If D’s go along with this evil, they deserve to fade into oblivion.

I must say, Felix Hillel Macaca going down in flames is a happy and bright spot in our world. You do know he was the next Chimpesque puppet Halliburton designee for our nation? What were they thinking? Asshole isn’t even remotely halfway cute.

If they wanted to acknowledge the kerfuffle at all, the Dems could have said something like:
Chavez and the history in both South America and other parts of the world stands as a monument to why handing over dictatorial powers to torture with impunity is not a good idea. America should seek to distance itelf from the totalitarian policies of such a man, not emulate them.
Then if they were being truthful they could tack on: I have, however, been in a briefing room with the President and he does not smell of sulphur – although I can see how Chavez could be confused. Hi Karate fumes do tend to linger.

Well, the death of the American republic can probably be dated on December 9, 2000, when Scalia halted the counting of votes in Florida, and anointed his chosen one as our unelected ruler. They cemented it a few days with the incoherent and inexcusable ‘Bush v. Gore.’
The torture amendment was just the latest and worst step on the trip to hell that started on that December day. Hopefully, we can start to rescuscitate our democracy later this year, but I’m not hopeful.
looks like the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow (Monday) morning at 10:30am. The title of the hearing is:

Hey gang! Rick Perlstein is upstairs chatting about the new Sidney Blumenthal book!
the NIE is a BRUTAL indictment of the polices the preisdent uses in Iraq
there is NO QUSTION the image of America CONDONING torture FUELS terrorism and the NIE points it out
WHY THE HELL AREN’T WE JUMPING ON THIS OPORTUINITY IN TIME
we can BRUTALIZE ANYONE that wants to allow torture, we can ATTACK them and thell them THEY ARE FACILITATING TERRORISIM, we can call then A RECRUITMENT BANNER FOR BIN LADEN
we have a rare oportunity where coinicdence has played into our hands
why aren’t we doing something with this tool?
Lamont just came out with a letter to Joe Lieberman in response to the NIE. It is long, but I am posting it here in its entirety because of its importance:
Letter From Ned Lamont to Sen. Lieberman: National Intelligence Estimate Finds the War in Iraq Has Made Us Less Safe
Senator Joseph Lieberman
United States Senate
Washington, D.C.
Dear Senator Lieberman:
As I am sure you have seen, the New York Times today reported that the National Intelligence Estimate in April concludes “that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.” The NIE represents the consensus view of the U.S. government’s 16 major intelligence agencies. The Times notes that the Iraq War is a major “reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology” and cites one intelligence official acknowledging that the NIE “says that the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism problem worse.” 1 Let me put this news in terms that you can clearly understand: Our own intelligence agencies now confirm that the Iraq War is undermining America’s security and credibility at our nation’s peril.
With this report being released on the eve of your major address on Iraq, I and thousands of other citizens in Connecticut expect to hear your response to this news in your speech, considering you have echoed President Bush’s claim that the Iraq War has made our country safer, and that staying the course will help keep us safe. As the NIE now shows, that is absolutely not the case – in fact, the Iraq War has and continues to unnecessarily endanger U.S. national security. Never again can a political leader claim otherwise, lest they deliberately ignore the concrete facts presented to us by our intelligence agencies.
Senator Lieberman, I sincerely hope you will provide answers to these questions in your speech, because there are many who feel that Time Magazine was correct when it wrote that when it comes to Iraq, “Either Senator Lieberman is so divorced from reality that he’s completely lost the plot or he knows he’s spinning a line.” 2 Clearly, Iraq is the most pressing national issue of our time and like many others, I was perplexed a few weeks ago when you gave a major speech on national security but failed to publicly explain your position on Iraq. As one newspaper editorial said, “Any politician worth his salt should know what he thinks about Iraq, off the top of his head – and he should be willing and able to articulate it.” 3 Similarly, thousands of Connecticut citizens are perplexed that you have skipped half of all U.S. Senate votes on the subject, including votes that occurred while you were in Washington, D.C.
At a time of war, our state and our country needs leaders in Congress who are willing to speak frankly with the public and who are willing to fulfill their constitutional obligations to hold the executive branch accountable. Our troops serving in combat and the millions of citizens concerned about this war deserve no less.
Governor Tom Kean and former Rep. Lee Hamilton – bipartisan chairs of the 9-11 commissions – both agree that Iraq has diverted attention from the war on terror. USA Today and the Washington Post have both reported that the Iraq War diverted critical resources from the hunt for Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda in Afghanistan. And now, as mentioned above, the National Intelligence Estimate states that the Iraq War has caused terrorism to increase and spread throughout the world. Do you accept these conclusions? If so, why do you continue to insist we need no change in Iraq policy and that our military resources must stay in Iraq indefinitely? And in light of all of this, how can you still claim Iraq is the central front in the War on Terror?
In recent weeks, your campaign has told reporters that you have “repeatedly and harshly criticized the Bush administration” for its Iraq policy. Yet, you were the primary author of the Senate resolution backing the Iraq War policy, and, as the New Yorker noted just last year, you have since been “unapologetic about [your] defense of Bush’s Iraq policy.” 4 As you told that magazine, “Bottom line, I think Bush has it right.” 5 At the time the article was printed, Iraq had just experienced two of the deadliest attacks in the growing insurgency, and its neighbors told international media that they feared a civil war was already underway inside the country. 6 Can you explain why you are now claiming to have always been a critic of this war, when the facts show otherwise? And can you explain why you continue to defend the Bush administration’s conduct of this war, when it’s execution has been so severely flawed and as a result severely compromised our national security?
Few argue that one way a U.S. Senator can honor our troops is to fulfill his/her most basic responsibility by casting votes on the Iraq War. 7 Yet, Senate records show you have skipped roughly half of all U.S. Senate votes on the Iraq War – even when they were on the most critical life-and-death issues. As just one example, you skipped a critical vote on legislation by Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd that would have provided critical funding for protective gear for troops serving in combat. 8 This was especially critical, considering Newsweek now reports that up to “one in four of those killed in combat in Iraq might be alive if they had had stronger armor around them” and “thousands more who were unprotected have suffered grievous wounds, such as the loss of limbs.” 9 Your campaign has explained that you decide whether to show up to vote based on whether your vote sways the outcome. Do you agree that your logic is flawed and detrimental to our troops given the incredible power each vote yields in holding the President accountable? Do you agree that if every senator followed your logic that the Senate would be a useless entity in terms of standing up for the citizens they are meant to serve?
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, you heard first hand the testimony from the former Generals from the first Gulf War about the incredible dangers of invading Iraq, overthrowing Saddam, and becoming occupiers in a hostile land. Yet, in 2005, you publicly attacked those who raised questions about the conduct of the war for supposedly “undermin[ing] presidential credibility at our nation’s peril.” 10 Do you agree now that their predictions have held true and do you bear any special responsibility for ignoring those warnings and attacking those who want Congress to hold this administration accountable?
In your first campaign commercial after losing the Democratic primary in 2006, you said “I want to help end the war in Iraq.” 11 Yet, you have opposed every single resolution in Congress that would urge an end to the Iraq War. In fact, you cast the deciding vote against legislation to merely demand the Bush administration better inform Congress of its strategy for victory in Iraq. How can you tell Connecticut citizens that you “want to help end the war in Iraq” when you have used Connecticut’s Senate seat to oppose ending the war in Iraq and continue to stifle any responsible debate about America’s future course in Iraq?
In the lead up to the war, you said you supported invasion because Saddam Hussein supposedly had weapons of mass destruction (WMD). 12 After reports in 2004 and 2005 showed that was not the case, you repeated the baseless assertion that he did have WMD and was cited by one Connecticut paper for “dancing” around the issue. 13 Now, just a few weeks ago, you told a national radio host that the WMD argument for war was merely “a nice side benefit” and that you would have supported the invasion even if the public knew there were no WMD. 14 Why did you use WMD to publicly justify your support for the war, and now say you would have supported the war even if there were no WMD? If we didn’t go to war over WMD, why exactly did we go to war with Saddam when he was not working with terrorists, had no WMD, and therefore presented no imminent threat? And, would you now support invading other countries that do have WMD and pose a more imminent threat?
Last week on statewide television, you said “I have seen no evidence that Iraq was tied to 9/11.” Your comments came after you refused to answer questions about the recent U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee report finding absolutely no collaborative relationship between Saddam Hussein’s government and Al Qaeda. 15 Yet, in 2003, you appeared on national television justifying your strong support of the war by saying: “I want to be real clear about the connection with terrorists – I’ve seen a lot of evidence on this. There are extensive contacts between Saddam Hussein’s government and al Qaeda.” Why did you make this explosive charge in 2003 and say you had evidence to back it up, but now admit you have no evidence to support it?
Senator Lieberman, I sincerely hope you will provide answers to these questions in your speech. Clearly, Iraq is the most pressing national security issue of our time and like many others, I was perplexed a few weeks ago when you told reporters you were that you were still refusing to publicly explain your position on Iraq. As one newspaper editorial said, “Any politician worth his salt should know what he thinks about Iraq, off the top of his head – and he should be willing and able to articulate it.” 16 Similarly, thousands of Connecticut citizens are perplexed that you have skipped half of all U.S. Senate votes on the subject, including votes that occurred while you were in Washington, D.C.
At a time of war, our state and our country needs people in Congress who are willing to speak frankly with the public and who are willing to fulfill their constitutional obligations to hold the executive branch accountable. Our troops serving in combat and the millions of citizens concerned about this war deserve no less.
Sincerely,
Ned Lamont
Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate
Time is downplaying bloggers’ ability to make a difference in elections.
Beautiful Ned letter. Does he anticipate a Lieber flop on his war stance tomorrow? If I were a citizen of CT and somehow agreed with Joes pro war stand, I would still be furious over his attendance/voting record. Shameful.
“Your campaign has explained that you decide whether to show up to vote based on whether your vote sways the outcome.”
This sounds like a classic college freshman explaining that ‘My vote wouldn’t matter anyway’. How many years have we spent trying to teach people that every vote counts?
Knucklehead. Liar.
Success of blogworld verses Lieberlier could leave Schumer dumber since that slime thought why not thwart first and marginalize the left.

Too late. We’ve already made a difference.
I mentioned this on another thread, but it bears repeating. Not all Dems are being silent. My Congressman, Earl Blumenauer, issed a Condemnation of Legalizing Torture and asked for an investigation of rendition. Ask other legislators to support him in this, or just thank Blumenauer. It’s an easy action step.

Yes, I understand the idea that “we have to be nice first.” I knew this was not true, but realized others had to understand this. Have we been nice long enough? If you don’t think so, there is no hope for you. Sit dowm, shut up, and be ready to thank those who save you.

I am beyond disgusted. The Democrats did not stand up for PISSING ON THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS. That should have been a no-brainer. Where, exactly, is the line for these fools?
I’ve pointed this out before, but the freakin’ Geneva Conventions were ratified UNANIMOUSLY by the Senate in 1949. Memo to Harry Reid: You aren’t going way out on a limb to express support for something that EVERY senator, right after WWII, voted for. Bush’s grandfather voted for it. Joe McCarthy voted for it. To oppose it or tinker with it OR STAND BY AND WATCH IT GET TINKERED WITH now is to go to a far-right CrazyLand even Joe McCarthy would not enter. Senator Reid, it’s ok to be to the left of McCarthy. Why aren’t the Democrats pointing out 1) it was passed unanimously by post-war generation. Vague stuff doesn’t pass unanimously. 2) Bush’s grandfather was right to vote for it. Bush is wrong to oppose it. The Republican Congress has lost its principles.
This is the perfect issue to point out the difference between the GOP of today and the GOP of yore. It is the perfect wedge to make not-so-extreme Republicans and libertarian Republicans uncomfortable. Fight, you damned fools, FIGHT!
darkblack, that is absolutely chilling. The “comma” remark gets an equally shocking rejoinder. You have to shop this around so that multitudes can see it.
Sadly, your best work ever.
I’m 42. I think. Anyway, I am not an emotional woman, generally, This week, and last probably, I’ve been prone to tears. And tonight I figured out why….Torture.
I grew up during Vietnam. A war with a draft. I grew up in a Northern California suburb, where you knew all your neighbors and you went home when the street lights came on.
In the early 70s, we had 3 of our street’s boys get drafted and shipped off to Nam.
Two out of three came home. The other two clearly had some issues. Beer and weed on the porch was tacitly accepted by the neighborhood as a returned soldier’s due.
Jimmy hung himself after three years home. He had told some of the kids he had been tortured.
Tom. who never spoke another word after arriving in SFO, walked the street, back and forth, probably 5-10 times a day. The adults used to tell us not to bother him.
Tom put a gun in his mouth in late 1976 as I was walking home from 6th grade. I will never forget the picture of his mother walking out with the gurney, leaning over and kissing him, not crying.
I remember asking my mother why his mom wasn’t crying (as my mother was sobbing)
She said he was tortured and that he had died a long time ago. And that now his mom was at peace that he was no longer in pain.
And now we’re talking about torture in America…
Thank you so much watertiger for referring to the victims of 9/11 as “citizens of the world”. Every time I hear Bush say “They murdered 3,000 of our citizens” I wonder whether he’s just ignoring the hundreds of non-Americans killed that day or whether he’s granted them posthumous citizenship.

No offense meant, but please remember a little history.
1858. Same place in the political cycle. Dred Scott decision. A black man has no rights a white man is bound to respect.
The fact is that we’re on autopilot, Nixon’s autopilot, and we will remain there until we have leaders who will point us in a new direction rather than just argue over the current one.
And you can do a lot of that work right here, right now.

What I saw were two women – Couric and Rice – SMILING while they were talking about the kids who died in Alabama!! What is with them that they always have a SMIRK on their faces when they talk? Whats the joke??
Couric does not have enough presence for her job.
