I actually think this could be quite an important moment for Democrats to re-frame the national security debate. Wallace pushed Clinton into saying what Democrats should be saying — Bush was asleep on the job, did not take Osama Bin Laden seriously and his actions have not made us safer.
WJC: I authorized the CIA to get groups together to try to kill him. The CIA was run by George Tennet who President Bush gave the medal of freedom to and said he did a good job. The country never had a comprehensive anti terror operation until I came to office. If you can criticize me for one thing, you can criticize me for this, after the Cole I had battle plans drawn to go into Afghanistan, overthrow the Taliban, and launch a full scale attack search for Bin Laden. But we needed baseing rights in Uzbekistan which we got after 9/11. The CIA and the FBI refused to certify that Bin Laden was responsible while I was there. They refused to certify. So that meant I would have had to send a few hundred special forces in helicopters and refuel at night. Even the 9/11 comission didn’t do that. Now the 9/11 commission was a political document too. All I’m asking is if anybody wants to say I didn’t do enough, you read Richard Clarke’s book.
CW: Do you think you did enough sir?
WJC: No because I didn’t get him
CW: Right…
WJC: But at least I tried. That’s the difference in me and some, including all the right wingers who are attacking me now. They ridiculed me for trying. They had eight months to try and they didn’t….. I tried. So I tried and failed. When I failed I left a comprehensive anti-terror strategy and the best guy in the country, Dick Clarke… So you did Fox’s bidding on this show. You did you nice little conservative hit job on me.
No prisoners, Bubba. No prisoners.

where did everybody go?
Did he actually say the nice conservative hit job part? That is so cool if he did.
Wallace really is a horrible person. Interrupting and just being an ass. I wouldn’t treat anyone that way, let alone a former president.
President Bill Clinton!
nice little conservative hit job? Hit back hard.
And Fitz!
Here’s who Chris Wallace is.
DAMN YOU, CLINTON!! Now I have to watch Fox on Sunday. Think Progress has a full transcript up-
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/22/clinton-fox/
but I want to see the Big Dog chew Chris Wallace’s leg off.
Good to see Bill in a fighting mood.
abjectfunk @

Yeah I was pretty impressed with the “hit job” comment — he also called them “right wingers.”
Everyone thought big dog would put undue influence on us, but I think he is talking like a blogger.
If Big Dog will take them on, just like that, I’ll get behind Hillary. Honest I will.
Now if he would only say, “The U.S. needs to get out of Iraq” and “We need to stop the Republicans from destroying our constitution.”
Bill has been playing elderly statesman for the past five years. If he went on the attack, everyday, for the month of October, it would make a huge difference. What does he have to loose? The country is in its worst crisis since the late 1850’s and Bill could help change the course of history. We can see it why can’t he?
Steve @ 13–
Could be Bill has seen the light. Plus he wants his wife to be the next President.
Let’s see how this plays out in the coming week. And the Big Dog better get his ass up here to CT to stump for Lamont,,,, you know, the Democratic candidate.
Ed!!!
Jane thank you! Fight, Bill, fight!
one little typo in the transcript– the “g” is missing from Afghanistan.
neurophius @
12
“We must not torture, ever!” would work for me too.
This is what “had enough” looks like. Just tell it like it is. That Disney/ABC fakeout must have pissed him off for days. Let alone 1998.
EPU’d thoughtwise.
All of this ’smackdown’ stuff is useless (especially since it was on FUX news; no Dems watching).
Everybody do something positive every day. No matter what FUX does, no matter what Rove or Armitage, or Chimpy, or Rethugs say, and we will have done everything we can do.
Give $5 to an act ActBlue Candidate. Google some dirty dirt on any undesirable. Talk to your friends and relations (said Owl carelessly). Or do nothing other than feeling that tomorrow will bring overwhelming news that we are right. Relish that thought, and know that even if we don’t succeed this time the sands of time are clogging the evil ass of the current administration.
We will get by.
Thanks, Jane. Truly great post.
Of course, notice which part Fox uses for the promo – the part where Clinton says he *tried*… and failed. Still pretty good, though. Let’s hope they leave the interview intact.
Ed, Agreed, Clinton could really make a difference in Connecticut.
I’m really having difficulty figuring out what he’s waiting for. Supporting Lamont is the right thing to do from a moral perspective, and the right thing to do as a loyal Democrat.
Not to mention, Hillary has zero chance in 2008 unless Bill steps up and does the right thing in Connecticut. This is THE litmus test.
Balrog @
18
No. This is how we rally the base. It’s critical in midterm elections and I don’t think enough people in leadership positions realize this. Long live YouTube.
All the other stuff you mention is good, too, however.
CMike @ 7
OMG – the guy is nuts. Certifiable.
Now that the entire transcript of this idiot’s interview with Clinton has been made public, and there are even video clips circulating around – do you think Fox will go ahead and edit the interview? Or has their hand been forced?
My dog Jake tonight tells me that Big Dog almost lost his
heart once and this time around the Rethugs are acting
like Aztecs attempting to cut out his heart for good!
Jake tells me that dogs have to bare their teeth, growl and
get into fights to reclaim lost territory. Hope Clinton
understands the way of the dog? Perhaps he’s waking up. He’s been sleeping too long in the Bush compound. WTF was he doing with Laura Bush the other day. Is he trying to learn the ropes of being First Man if his wife becomes Prez? I sure hope he listens to my dog Jake.
EPU’d from the last thread.
My Pomeranian is named Pippin. And those movies gave me hope and a much needed distraction for 3 years after 9/11.
We must keep our eye on the ball. Even if we don’t take back Congress, we must continue to fight and educate. Think of Markos kicking that donkey in the ass. We need to keep kicking no matter what.
Gamling: “We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor.”
Theoden: “No, we cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless.”
I’m impressed. You know what they say, let sleeping dogs lie. And now that Big Dog is woken up in the worse possible way, besmiching him, watch out.
Perhaps Hil is channelling FDR and has asked WJC to ‘get out there and force me to do it’ (ie. go hard progressive)?
.
he looks good n’ pissed… let’s see – wingers will probably call it “unhinged”
So can we force Harry Reid to watch a loop of this performance the rest of the weekend? So maybe he can come out and actually say something on Monday?
Pretty please???
OldCoastie @ 28
“Shrill Clinton”, most likely.
Sam! And Jake!
*xyz @ 21
XYZ – there was an article recently in the NY Times about the Lamont campaign which made it clear that though many politicians have offered to campaign for Lamont, they don’t want a lot of out of state politicians coming through. The Lamont campaign is calling the shots, not the other way around.
I wonder, based on the comments Clinton made on Larry King the other night, whether he would offer to campaign with Lamont since he clearly sees Joe as a Democratic candidate, too.
I like to think that when you met with the Big Dog last week, you told him his country needed him to stand up and fight for its last shreads of its decency.
We are about to legalize torture, kidnapping, rendition, and warrantless wiretapping; and the King is about to launch war upon yet another nation without even the pretense of involving the peoples’ representatives in the discussion.
I have been long holding on to the thought that the historical moment we are in is 1932. But I’m starting to despair that that is simply a comforting illusion I’ve been holding on to so that I don’t have to recognize that it’s August 1939.
There is a rule (with very good reason) that former presidents not criticize the present one. But leaders recognize the times when the good reasons rules are made are outweighed by the circumstances that make breaking them necessary.
I am glad at least someone on the Democratic side recognizes that sitting mute on the sidelines is no way to stand up for our country.
Jane Hamsher @
22
Agreed. But the base needs more rallying points. Talking points -vs- rallying points is the final equation. We need to rally all of the new Lakers here that tuned in because you’re a ‘knockout’ and stayed because you speak wisdom that they haven’t heard from the msm. Lower case msm intentional.
Happy to see him talking about this, but I know the right is going to make hay about his wild-eyed look. Surprising…he usually hits just the right marks when speaking publicly and before cameras.
But, this is worth getting pissed about. Being framed for not doing anything to prevent 9/11. That’s the best attack on Dems that the wingnuts can muster, albeit false like so much of what they rely on. God forbid they actually run on their own truly pathetic record.
Yeah! MORE OF THIS! This is just what the American people want and need to hear. Bushco screwed up because of their hatred of Clinton. They hated him so much they ignored everything he did. They especially ignored what was recommended they do regarding our country’s security issues. Their incompetency was and is overwhelming.
Say, there’s a sound bite. Their incompetency is overwhelming!
Professor Foland @ 33
If we ever get another Democratic president, will it be weeks or days before Dubya criticizes him (or her)?
FULL transcript ; )
http://thinkprogress.org/clinton-interview
Crooks & Liars has the transcript (rough) up for the full interview. When you read it word for word, the Big Dog slapped him around like a red-headed stepchild. Got him laughing uncomfortably and trying to defend his own incompetence as a “Faux Journalist”. It’s quite a fun read
Jen Nix says,
“Being framed for not doing anything to prevent 9/11. That’s the best attack on Dems that the wingnuts can muster, albeit false like so much of what they rely on.”
Isn’t that the classic Rovian formula, attack them on what you are weak on? Or maybe I am confused. Attack them on their strengths?
Cozumel’s faster on the draw! LOL
Jane, were you able to get the file?
neurophius @ 40
Both, I think…
neurophius–
You’ve got both the yin and the yang of the Rovian stratergy there.
Jen Nix @ 35
Hi Jen,
Left you a nice thank you for what you do on the last thread. Watching the clip I see less wild eyed and more pissed off something serious. He has been the whipping boy for the rightwingnuts and it looks as if he is tired of it. He really has nothing to lose in this and to have his effort against Osama degraded by these sh*ts seems to have gotten under his skin. At least that is what I am hoping!
Eli @ 30
I’ve already read a comment posted by a troll on some other blog saying that Clinton was far too defensive which means he feels guilty.
The wingnuts will twist the exchange so it suits their purposes.
Nate @ 41
Former Day Trader, what can I say? LOL
http://cliffschecter.blogspot.com/
There’s someone else out there who’s not afraid to speak his mind (go to above site to see his MSNBC appearance).
We need more Dems like Bill and Cliff who aren’t afraid to tell the truth, to speak it clearly, and with emphasis.
I, for one, am relieved to see us represented by a few others who’ve “had enough” and aren’t afraid to say so.
DeanFan84 @ 11
If Hillary will take them on like that then I’ll get behind Hillary.
Cozumel @

Thanks, Cozumel. My favorite part:
CLINTON: You can.
WALLACE: I always intended to sir.
CLINTON: No you intended to move your bones by doing this first. But I don’t mind people asking me. I actually talked to the 9/11 commission for four hours and I told them the mistakes I thought I made. And I urged them to make those mistakes public because I thought none of us had been perfect, but instead of anybody talking about those things. I always get these clever little political…where they ask me one sided questions… It always comes from one source.
Chris Wallace was obviously flabbergasted by someone taking responsibility for mistakes that they made. Quite possibly a first on Fox News.
Steve G’s got a good post up…
http://stevegilliard.blogspot……uring.html
Jane @ 50,
Honesty usually does seem to take these guys by surprise.
Actually Eli 37, if Bush retires peacefully to Crawford (or Kennebunkport), I honestly think we’ll never hear another word from him. First, I simply don’t believe he even cares. And two years from now what we know about this Administration is going to be so much worse than even we can even imagine today, that the media will recognize that he’s a ratings loser and not even give him airtime if he does.
BushCo has no moral, ethical, legal, political, international, public servant ground to stand on. The truth is, Dems could dance circles around these assbites if they would only recover from the Stockholm Syndrome.
Who says progressive bloggers aren’t powerful? A dozen of ‘em meet with the Big Dog one week, and the next week he bares the fangs of Junkyard Dog.
Wow…I like that edit button. For the few folks who saw my earlier version of this comment, it looks like I will have to set that alarm for Sunday morning.
OK folks, my last post on the subject.
I am as guilty as anyone on this list for posting dittos and yuk-yuks, and I think the group is far the better for it. But:
There is very little time before the mid-term elections. It is time to focus.
Every one of us should proceed through the elections focusing on how we can achieve a Dem majority in both the Senate and the House. Now is the time for us to focus on one thing and one thing only; that being the final goal.
All of us who find ourselves amusing, or think we have a better recipe, or have a sure conspiracy theory, hold that thought until after the mid-terms.
Think about only the mid-terms and how we can prevail. After that we will have witty repartee and congratulate each other and post fun stuff for months.
Until the 2008 election arrives. Then we will be a force to be reckoned with.
Dang, this could be a heavy and worked up thread, time to open another bottle of wine!
From Richard Clarke’s written testimony:

I highly recommend that everyone here follow your link and go and read the full transcript of the Clinton beatdown of the Faux “News” idiot. It is amazing. There is no way that Faux will air that unedited.
Read the full transcript and all I can say is MORE! MORE! MORE!
Democrats STAND UP! Don’t give an inch!
Let them have it President Clinton! That fire is exactly what we need!
Funniest part was reading where Wallace was trying to break free, and the Big Dog just would not leg go of his leg till HE was good and damn ready.
A thing of beauty.
Wallace forgot who he was dealing with-a Rhodes scholar who was able to get to Yale Law school without having a legacy entree.
I’ve already read a comment posted by a troll on some other blog saying that Clinton was far too defensive which means he feels guilty.
The wingnuts will twist the exchange so it suits their purposes.
(Accidentally posted this on the last thread)
I can’t help but notice that Chris Wallace has the same initials as Conventional Wisdom.
Coincidence? I think not.
Does anybody have a “Thank you, Mr. Bill” link?
I’m not hopeful. All of my favorite sites are crowing ‘Sweet! Smackdown! If everyone doesn’t vote for Clinton, well fuckin-A!’
Someone please give me hope.

Of course they will try to do that.
That’s not what this was important for.
It’s important because it shows some fight-clearly that Chrissy didn’t expect.
We have to fight-from the Big Dog on down to the newest Firepup.
It’s good to know who you can count on to fight beside you.
Jsut thinking out loud about what GWB has done for us so far:
- Wingnuts on the Supreme Court
- Energy policy by Enron
- Sleeping before 9/11
- 2,900 men and women dead in his wars
- An economy that left most of us behind
- An education programthat has left kids behing
- A Gulf Coast left behind
- Billions of $$$’s left behind with halliburton
- Congressmen left behind bars(that is actually cool)
- Billions of dollars left behind at the gas pump
- Millions left behind on health insurance
- Millions of citizens left behind at the voting both
- Billions of dollars in pensions sucked away by big business and he don’t care
He had better hope that the Rapture gets here soon to save his ass!

Much appreciated.

Big Dog is not fighting.
Chris Wallace is used to having Democrat Joe Lieberman on the show. HA!
Did we not read the same transcript?
Clintons, both, remain enablers of Bush and BFEE. Both could use their stature to speak plain and kick fucking Rove bullshit ass. They do not. Why?
I have never felt more bereft, or felt more a blow upon a bruise, than to hear of Rangel, Pelosi, and even progressive radio people like Rachel Maddow, Stephanie Miller, all defending Bush against Chavez.
Fucking stunning, the kneejerk lapdog obedience.
Chavez is/was 5000% correct.
God god god.

Sweet! Awright!
And that has helped us how?
Let’s look at the bottom line. No offense.

Mid term elections are about firing up the base to get to the polls. These are the kinds of actions that get them there.
Unless you have a way to effectively measure that something like this is counter-productive to that effort, I don’t see your point.

Are you always this condescending, or is tonight special?
Jane Hamsher @ 75
It’s a matter of small victories -vs- large. We are getting down to the wire here, Jane. Time for some really focused effort. The joy of our favorite FDL can resume after we have made a difference electorally. And we will!
@74 Why is Taylor Marsh dreaded? I saw a comment on her blog; thanking Jane for allowing her to continue to post on FDL, despite pressure to do otherwise. What is the story?
Sharkbabe @ 72
Amen. When I heard Rangell refer to Bush as “my President” I thought I was going to freak out. These people need to be in the world. Where everyone else has experienced the brunt of Bush’s ignorance.
Speaking of action, did you know that you can report suspected Internal Revenue Service Tax Fraud on-line? And you can report it anonymously. Like, for example, let’s say you wanted to report tax-exempt Focus on the Family for blatant political behavior that is way beyond that allowed for a 501(c)(3) organization. You’d go to this I.R.S. site, fill out an online Form 3949-A, and mail it to:

The only thing you’d need to know is that their address is:
Focus on the Family

Maybe speaking out loud and strong is Clinton’s message…
boadicea @ 78
Focus on a Dem victory in the mid-terms. I apologize in advance, and will congratulate you in November.
I did see KO interview Clinton this evening and if someone can tell me what he said in that interview I will be happy. He sounded, to me at least, like he was back to his old double talking.
Clinton ‘praised’ Bush’s U.N. speech because he did not ‘go after’ (my words) Iran’s leaders. HUH? He thinks Bush should try diplomatic route first. Oh sure, Bush will always be the diplo… no not going to type it.
Clinton does well when directly challeneged on his record, but when ask what we should do now, he says we should be rationale and not fight amongst ourselves and move forward. Why won’t he talk about the torture and the loss of freedoms.
Sharkbabe @ 72
Sharkbabe, it’s pure survival politics…One of the cute moves in the Republican trick bag is that if any of the above had taken Chavez’ side against Bush…Then they would be labelled ‘Un-American’.
And the Wurlitzer would hang that around their necks like a burning tire from now until Nov. 7th.
They all know this. There is no political profit in a domestic pol siding with a foreign leader against the POTUS in an election year…None.
No matter what kind of a pestilent disgrace he might be.
Enjoyed seeing President Clinton on Olbermann too. Fascinating to watch a President listening carefully to a question, thinking about his answer before replying; speaking intelligently and without resorting to cliche or garbled stammering. Imagine: A President who is smart, knowledgable and articulate. I’d forgotten what it was like. Too many years of chimpy’s aggressive posturing as a desperate cover for his stupidity, his petulant anger, and his panic at being found out.
Oh, and I Love Keith Olbermann. Have gone from never watching television, to watching Olbermann faithfully. I mean there’s his special statements which are jaw droppingly bold – jaw dropping only because truth has become such a rarity on TV. But then, he slips in so many great remarks – I imagine the doughboy and deadeye stand angrily swirling their scotch as they watch him. Keith says “wait for the movie. Or the trial.” Oh, yeah.
“Focus on a Dem victory in the mid-terms.”
I have seen a lot of evidence that people here are doing exactly that. And will continue to do so.
Jane, what did you and Redd put in his coffee?
This is a different Bill.
The old Bill — placating, triangulating, appeasing — sold out the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party, but overall, we look back fondly at his term (the peace, the prosperity, the sex, the Simpsons…), and we genuflect at the altar of his intellect and talent.
But a FIGHTIN’ MAD Clinton, a pissed-off indignant mofo who can kick wingnut ass six ways to Sunday, AND who commands media attention whenever he so desires — this is just something we haven’t seen.
I like it.
More please.
darkblack @ 85
db, they didn’t need to say anything if that’s the dealio.
neurophius @ 87
I agree. Good call, neurophius! That’s what we need going forward.
Darkblack @ 85
The poor mother — that is one ugly baby!
I find it very promising and long overdue that Bill Clinton shouts out. Bushco did not pay attention, bushco got rid of Richard Clarke, they got rid of Shinseki, they got rid of all real intelligence and went on vacation. They wanted the power but not the responsibility. They hired hacks and cronies and look what we’ve got now. A mess of epic proportions and zero accountability. I am glad, glad, glad that the real truth is being told to the frothing wingnuts– may they gnash their teeth to nubs.
People did imagine that planes could be flown into buildings, people did have worst case scenarios in mind. Just not bushco– a frightful gang of idealogues and dullards and machiavellians who have done their level best to ruin everything here at home and abroad.
More please, President Clinton.

It’s not only pretty good, Eli, but excellent. “I tried and failed…” handily beats “I can’t think of any mistakes I’ve made”.

Wrong, meta…They need to move out in front of the mass assumption before it is used against them.
You want another Republican trick?
“When that vile Chavez criticised our homeland, you, sir, said nothing!“
“But…but…but I…”
“Nothing, I say! And who will you appease next, sir?”
Defensive is a hell of a position to play out of.
db, I understand strategy and I understand what you’re saying, but I’m never going to be in favor of being offended so that some other low information peeps can get over!
Balrog @ 56
Balrog – What makes you think we aren’t all involved in some fairly substantial way with the 2006 election? The same people don’t sit on this blog 24/7. There are generally shifts of people who check in different times of day or night.
This is also a community where we go to commiserate and sometimes share a sarcastic comment or joke or two. And we also come here when we lose faith and others buck us up so we can continue on.
I think savouring the intelligence and great political instincts of a former President of our party is allowed, don’t you? Can’t see how that takes away from our common goal.
And by the way – I love Christy’s weekend morning threads where we can get away from the depressing political landscape and focus on more mundane topics. Sometimes human beings just need to connect and recharge their batteries.
dab@101 The Sunday AM “boids” are the best!
Big Dog with his stature could have been destroying the Cheney Administration horseshit from the second of its illegal seizure of power.
Instead nothing but silence or outright enabling. I will never cease to be stunned at how Bill Clinton seems to be basically ok with this unelected regime and what it’s done for the past five years. Jesus fuck he’s practically gay lovers with poppy. And he actually invites fucking Laura Bush to his let’s seriously care about the world conferences. Un the freak believable. What will/would it take to renounce this junta, Mr. Fred Rogers Clinton?
Every single person writing and lurking on boards like these is the future, has a thousand times the force of celebrity politicians, we just still don’t grasp it.
dab from CT @ 101
Dang, I was misunderstood.
I don’t criticize people here, because I don’t feed trolls.
I’m not criticizing anyone. My only goal was to energize the troops!
Reread my posts, and if you still have issues I’m sorry. My intentions were good. And I’m sorry still.
But get your focus back on mid-terms either way. If you’re distracted by me, then you’re surely distracted by Rethug banter.
Steve @ 80
i was trying to be funny. i’ve seen her pretty severely criticized here because she is not as radically progressive as most on this site. she’s not as radical as i am, but i also believe that if we are ever to beat the wingnuts we have to have as big a tent as possible. Also she works hard for our side!
Jake again tells me that its takes more than just one Big Dog
growling in the night when the coyotes are out hunting cats and
dogs. Lets see who else will join Clinton in this mid-term junkyard
dog arousal howl we need to hear from now till election day.
I love it here in the countryside when the dogs howl as the coyote

Of course not, meta…I would presumptively assume from your posts that you are of balanced moral character. Therefore, expedient political behaviors are anathema.
But the people being played against border on sociopathic…They live to foster calumny and mendacity so as to throw their opponents off stride and off the scent.
Why give them any of our own flesh?
To be frank, Chavez is no hero merely for saying as a foreign leader what we say here, and in the greater blogosphere, in far more pungent terms 24/7.
By that standard, we are all far more heroic than Chavez.
Balrog,
I’m not going to beat a dead horse. I’m sure your comments are made with the best of intentions.
I just think you’re off base if you don’t think the folks who comment on this blog aren’t focused and/or actively engaged. Or that the dialogue that occurs here isn’t important – in and of itself.
Peace
Sharkbabe @ 103

Sam @ 106
Wow – we haven’t heard from Jake in a while. What a very wise dog he is.
It will be interesting to see who has the guts to continue the dialogue that started with Clinton’s Fox interview
Late Night True Confessions is available for your reading and commenting pleasure.
darkblack @ 107
That’s pretty much my point. Chavez didn’t say anything that we aren’t already thinking. And I guess it doesn’t make sense to me for Democrats to appease the wingnuts out of fear of being tagged an appeaser to the left. Seems like a pointless exercise in self-destruction.
Anyway, I bow to your brilliance.
I loved big dogs deservedly soft interview from Olbermann this evening who was aware of the fox fight and handed him a check for eight Kenyan schools at the beginning of the interview! woohoo wat to go Keith!
I loved news of Clinton letting the it fly for fox and will be pleasantly surprised if they air it unedited.
But I really loved seeing the President of Pakistan (Musharif?)corner Armitage and PresidentBush Jr.! After viewing the Armatige denial a couple of times and watching him blink like a man in a sandstorm he sure looked like a cornered lying wormtongue to me.
Musharif and Chavez honor truth more than fear.

To me, it is no accident that the more liberal members of our party were out in front with the most vehemence in denouncing “you know who.”
The right wing sound machine has been ready to attach him to our party since Wednesday when he and Cindy Sheehan hugged. (No judgment.)
Do you want to spend the next seven weeks watching ads about our extraordinary candidates being tied to something that they can flip around to make us look bad?
I think they were all exactly pitch perfect.
Hopefully, that nasty boomlet is done now.
Clinton is collecting money from around the globe to fight vigorously for humane causes. Bush is doing what Bush does best – destroying everything in his path. Do the math.

I do! I do or I wouldn’t be here!
I just think it’s time to focus on the next prize, which is the midterms.
Sharkbabe and meta … I’m nodding in agreement. Chavez got applause in our household and my daughter had to have the transcript immediately. Pelosi and Rangel could have ignored it … or they could have made the point that the current president has destroyed our standing with the rest of the world. Chavez was quite clear in his interviews that he looks forward to shake hands with the *next* president of the U.S. Not a surprising view when *this* president launched a coup against Chavez.
oh, and Balrog … you are amongst a group of highly active folks who are enjoying a discussion between doing all they can to win in November. yes, Jane, please shut down fdl until 11/8 so that none of us wastes a moment here when we should be engaged in balrog-approved activity.
sheesh.
Balrog says:
“I just think it’s time to focus on the next prize, which is the midterms.”
How much more clearly do we need to explain to you that that is what we are doing? I respectfully suggest that you give it a rest.
And if you’re having problems with our present dialogue not being sufficiently and exclusively focused toward your goals [notwithstanding that our actions are], I recommend that you not stay around for Late Nite.
Also, Bill Clinton allowed the corp media industrial idiocy complex to almost destroy his presidency. Even now he continues to act as if none of it happened, as if the CMIIC doesn’t exist, and as if the political/electoral realm continues to be some Mr. Smith contest of principles rather than a strife of soundbites.

Nobody wants to appease the wingnuts, unless it’s into early impoverished retirement…Think of it as taking away one of their tinkertoy talking points.
Oh, please

Sharkbabe @ 121
He’s in his bubble, too…It’s up to those outside that bubble like you to keep him honest.
Siun @ 118
Yeah Siun, I see your point. It’s tough to post rallying cries w/o sounding bossy, consescending, and irritating. Of course trackback would be useful. But I agree.
Someone needs to focus the troops into a focused forward-facing message. Paid consultants? Loud-mouthed Middle-Earth regulars?
Then who? Time grows short.
I am on our side! Yesterday and today’s news freaked me out! Quit busting me for trying to rally the troops!
darkblack 109 – now quit putting up such tiger beat dreamy images of that manly sexy yet sensitive considerate creature, stop it I say!
TeddySanFran @ 119
Diss me Teddy if it helps.
I’m on your side. Pray that you are not complimenting Jane’s hair while Karl Rove wins again.
I’m on your side.
Isn’t it pretty pathetic when we have to BEG Democrats to speak up?
Just remember, stop jawboning and make sure that everyone you know votes Democratic this time around. Put out extra effort, donate your hard earned money to these causes, otherwise you will have much more of this stuff, you will have a draft and a broken country and wars on at least three fronts, a national debt like you won’t believe and a Big Brother of a government.
Actually, Wallace has it all wrong. Bin Laden is laughing himself sick, not at the Liberals, but because he wants everybody to re-elect all of the Republicans who will support Bush’s policies even after he leaves office. Five years to have Bin Laden around still, its boggles the mind until you realize that (a) he is useful to Bush and vice versa, and (b) his group Al Qaeda may not be as big, as strong or as threatening as Bush makes him seem. Has anyone really determine if Al Qaeda has 300, 3000, or even 30000 adherents? I can’t find enough information about them that makes any sense whatsoever. So far, my conclusion is that Bush didn’t care about Bin Laden (FROM LA TIMES article by Maura Reynolds during a news conference at the White House on March 13, 2002, Bush said,” I truly am not that concerned about him,” according to the official White House transcript.) and likes to use him to scare people, ditto for Al Qaeda. To think, if Al Qaeda has even 3000 members worldwide, could that scare us? At any rate, if you don’t like people like O’Reilly, networks like Fox and Bush, vote for a Democrat no matter how much he may affront you. In the long run the Democrats will turn out to be as bad as the Republicans, but right now we need to restore the balance.

Balrog – we’re already focused, go look for someone else to rally …it’s kick back and have a drink after a long day of fighting the good fight and all and I am too tired for this.
If I was still of childbearing age, the name would be Hugo Chavez Sharp. Whether boy or girl.
Balrog, I don’t think this particular troop needs rallying.

without a doubt Chavez has a big mouth but he is also a pretty nervy guy and he has a long history of taking on the U.S. Government. as for bravery, i would imagine that he or some in his administration have been given a lecture by the likes of a Richard Armitage that he is out of line. in case you don’t remember Kissinger’s little chat with Chile’s Allende, Allende ended up dead, a suicide, it was claimed and Chile was taken over in a military coup. other South and Central American governments and politicians have been similarly treated over a long period of time. So, Chavez does have some stones. Whether or not he’s “more heroic” than you or me i’ll leave for others to decide. One really funny anecdote about Chavez: He had an audience with the Emperor of Japan and he gave him a hug! Nobody is suppose to even touch the Emperor…….

Balrog,
Even Maiar are entitled to bad days every now and then but I’ve seen you indulge in whimsy too so I know you aren’t a total drudge. Lighten up, spirit of flame. This is R&R and we need it. Plenty of serious all day long.

Teddy, I’m on your side. I caFern @ 132
I know that. But Jane was just on KO and there are a lot of new folk here. If I can rally them I’ll be happy.
I’ve been here for a year and never questioned the efforts of our folk. You guys ROCK!
Mommybrain @ 137
Thanks Mom. I never intended to suggest that anyone here wasn’t doing their part.
I only was trying to rally the troops. Tell me when I can come out of my bedroom…

hell yeah. you think gdubs is gonna go on tv when he leaves office. hell no. fox news should be called out for the crap it is. I truly believe people want to vote for people who will defend their position and party. we can’t deny that 2000 was a complete lay down to Bush. it was. of course they would do the same shit in 2004, and you know what it worked. A vietnam hero got railroaded by a bunch of 2 bit liars and that was it. Pres Clinton can only do so much. He was railroaded and he still brings the heat. I think dems need to start barking that the ‘war on terror’ and ‘war in iraq’ are not related and are the production of an ignorant adm. that can’t differentiate enemies. It is the hallmark of bush…’i don’t do nuance’. how that became admirable is beyond me. everything is nuance
Balrog—you might want to revisit the first sentence in your comment at 8:48. IMHO, what you tried to do was well intentioned but the phrase “stop digging” comes to mind.
I’ll gladly join you in the morning in a refocused effort to win the mid-terms. Do I need a hammer for setting yard signs or are we just door belling?

Sorry folks, my intentions were good.
My point was that we need to focus on the mid-terms specifically. All other topics are good but secondary.
Love you all, jb
Off to bed. It’s really getting to be fall weatherwise but I still can’t accept it. Thank gods for the timeless wool jacket, so cool and so warm whichever you need.
Thanks Mommybrain and totally you too
I have a theory that this stuff has been eating away at Big Dog — all this constant stab-stab-peck-peck by the VRWC, gnawing away at him. Sure, the man has a health history both by virtue of his genes and his eating/exercise habits, but the chronic, incessant exposure to the toxins that right-wingers spew with no outlet to release his frustrations in righteous anger has done physical and psychic hurt to him over the years.
So many of the pictures I’ve seen of him over the last 2 years show a different person, tired, drained (literally of color). Maybe it’s the lighting in the interview, but this is not the same guy we’ve seen around the ‘hood recently. Look at him in this video; he looks pink, vibrant, healthy. And righteously P*SSED!!
The Big Dog finally slipped the leash – yeehaw! Run, Big Dog, run! Let the Big Dog eat!!
let me first state that i was never a huge fan of bubba…(his pull toward the center right mainly- i never gave a shit about the blowjob, but it just plain stupid when he had vultures sniffing all over the place).
but it is SO refreshing to see a president engaged, and thoughtful, who wants to do more in his retirement than play golf.
i guess everything is relative. just as bush has reduced the expectations of americans to low after lower low, so has he made clinton into someone we look back at with nostalgic ache…. there was a time when we could bash the president for not doing enough of what we wanted- innocent times almost….
because now it’s a matter of stopping the president from committing another atrocity or abridging another freedom, or starting another war… it wasn’t pre 9/11 that made the time more hopeful.. it was pre bush.

Also re: The closing statment: No prisoners, Bubba. No prisoners.
The right wingers are known for engaging in “selective prosecution.” For example, going after Martha Stewart simply for political reasons.
This blog’s constant referral to Bill Clinton as “Bubba” seems to be a form of “selective persecution”.
For the record, bubba is defined as:
Slang. an uneducated Southern white male; good old boy; redneck.
I am sure others also find your need to belittle Clinton offensive.
Rayne & dachoste (156, 157)
Agreed. When you think about how many bashers of both Clintons there are out there, and have been for more than twenty years (at least) some of their behavior (and i don’t mean the sexual part, however you might feel about that) is pretty understandable. if you just consider the period he was president, my god, how he was sniped at and savagely attacked, it is no wonder that he withdrew from direct confrontation after he left office. it’s no wonder that he had to have heart surgery. it’s a wonder that it didn’t kill him. and as for being willing to work with Bush 41, it showed a willingness to work with a more-or-less moderate Republican, an attempt to lessen the division in the country, an attempt which we really do need, one which Fuckwad has paid begrudging lip service to but never, not once, actually tried to bring about.
Being attacked from the right and from the left, especially as vociferously and vitriolically as Bill Clinton has, and still is, would intimidate 99.999% of Americans. To me, it’s a wonder that he has bothered to speak up at all. I have never been a big fan of Bill’s, but I respect his intellect and his political instincts. i respect his survival instincts. He has a lot of warts, but he is also a Mensch. A lot of people really love him, world wide. He has the touch, the gift. We need him every bit as much, if not more than he needs us.
NoBubba @ 158
Bubba is a leeetle bit like the “n” word. IT’s OK to call someone Bubba if the tone is right and the caller is a southerner. Bubba has a familial, affectionate potential.
I’m afraid I’m with Eli.
First, it’s great to see the Big Dog out there again, and WHY he got that name. Oh, man, it’s like the touch of an old lover. ;-)
Second, Clinton did a lot of co-campaigning in the last days of 2004. I don’t know how much good it did in the vote, as he was clearly trying to balance helping local candidates while staying out of Kerry’s spotlight. But I think it helped energize Democrats and remind them of what they liked even if they were (as some, not me, were) unhappy with the choice that year.
I fear though — Clinton got sandbagged for sure, and he gave it back good if you read the whole thing (and watching is probably as good). I worry that he’s given the GOP a couple of soundbites at the end, though, that they can replay again and again, dishonestly:
“Did you do enough?” “No.”
and the aforementioned
“I tried and failed”.
Am I worrying too much? I’ve been watching FreeRepublic since the days all they had to chew on was Waco and Whitewater. Hm.
Uh, you do know he’s had the nickname forever, right? You been living overseas or something?
In 1992, his campaign vehicle was called “The Bubba Bus”. Also, it probably got a boost from the HST profile in Rolling Stone.
They’re all busy baring their blackest secrets to TRex.
I’m proud of the Prez for giving it to Wallace for being a pretend journalist, but I suspect this is going to be spun into The Scream 2.0 and used to trash the name Clinton moving forward.
Clinton, unfortunately, did not reframe the issue in this exchange. Wallace asked him “Did you do enough” and he said “I tried.” That’s the same frame. He threw out some good points about Bush not doing enough, etc., but that was not so much a reframe as an elaboration of “I tried.” The frame is still “doing enough.”
What I would have liked to see him to is reframe the question to the stuff we have been talking about here: accountability.
For example, when Wallace asked his question, Clinton could have sat back in his chair, instead of leaning forward, and said this:
The American people see that as a key part of the problem.
But I have faith in the American people. They see that this man still has two years left inside of which he can do alot of good. But they know he can’t do alot of good unless there’s a Congress there to push him along, to make him answer some tough questions like the one you’re posing to me now.
Now, Chris, I’m happy to answer your question about my past mistakes–and there were mistakes. I’ve spoken about them in other places, and I’m happy to go back over that information with you here. But nothing I say to you today is going to save lives, because my Presidency is over. But imagine if you were to ask those same toughtquestions to President Bush–really ask them and get him to answer–that would save lives. So I have faith in the American people to see that and to do the right thing. Now, let’s talk about that first question…“
That’s what the refrrame could have been: squarely on 2006, on the idea of holding the President to account, saving lives, etc.
But I don’t blame the big guy for losing his cool. Chris Wallace is such an ass. I honestly don’t know how Clinton stopped himself from headbutting him right between the eyes.
Jeffrey, you rock!! Ain’t hind-thought grand!!
He’ll be too busy clearing brush or watching football on TV to care.
Clinton did a masterful job of defending himself. No surprise there. I couldn’t understand how Faux could use this ambush to their-read wingnut-advantage. Now I know. Faux edited that clip rather artfully ending with Clinton saying, “I tried, but failed.”
The complete interview will only run one or two times. That clip will be played over and over and over again. Their dishonesty knows no bounds.
Skipped a lot of posts, didn’t want to drown in the pissing contest above, sorry if someone else brought this up.
Just a framing suggestion from an ex-copywriter – rather than “we tried and failed,” perhaps “we were trying, and trying hard, but the clock ran out on us. We passed the ball to the new Bush Administration and they dropped it.”
Interesting edit on that clip: It ends with Clinton saying “I failed”.
Name of the vid is “Bill Clinton Freaks Out.
the meme is still in the wingnut court.
Why don’t democrats stuff Hart Rudman down conservative’s throats ever day? It shows what a lack of vision Team Thief has. Shows they left us open to attack.

Balrog, I’ve taken a break to cool off, so I’m going to say this in the spirit I believe you did indeed intend, though I know it’s EPU time.
You rally the troops by example-talking about the exciting fight YOU are engaged in-not by trying to cut short other activities they may be engaged in.
So, rather than ask for my CV regarding the fight in Texas, tell me what’s got you revved up in MN(?) and we’ll keep each other on track.
Rock on.
no wonder he gets laid so much. I’d fuck him right now if he asked , and I’m as straight as the next guy :)
