Regard the current conventional wisdom about what has become of media coverage of PlameGate. These would be the pearls of one Rem Reider from the American Journalism Review:
There are many ways to characterize the media’s response to the news that former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage was responsible for outing CIA operative Valerie Plame. "Feeding frenzy" isn’t one of them.
"Collective yawn" is more like it.
After all the blanket coverage of special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s investigation, after all the speculation about Karl Rove and Scooter Libby, after all the allegations of dastardly doings by the Bush White House, you’d think IDing the leaker would be big news.
That’s particularly true when it turns out the villain wasn’t an angry neocon bent on revenge against a critic of the Iraq war – Plame’s husband, Joseph Wilson – but a Colin Powell ally who was at best a lukewarm supporter of the invasion.
Far from being part of an orchestrated plot or a vast White House conspiracy, Plame’s unmasking was simply the handiwork of that Washington, D.C., staple, an insider with a big mouth. The culprit was gossip, not political gunslinging.
It should be noted that the left is not giving up on this one, continuing to point ominously at Bush aides’ behavior vis-à-vis Plame and Wilson. But there’s little doubt that Armitage’s role is a body blow to the conspiracy theorists.
I’m sure Mr. Reider has pored over every last document, twist, turn, recant, can’t-recall, and obstruction this complex story entails, and he is eminently qualified to pronounce The Last Word on the investigation itself, as well as the media’s performance to date in explaining this story to the American people. Perhaps Patrick Fitzgerald should just throw in the towel right now, because certainly a media critic who has no experience reporting on this story–whatsoever–certainly knows better than the special prosecutor who has painstakenly investigated this sordid tale, and indicted Scooter Libby.
People, this is exactly why we need your help to publish Marcy Wheeler’s book, 16 Words. Conventional wisdom and access-oriented journalism too often result in complex stories being dumbed down and sometimes ignored altogether, as we’ve seen on this story since the supposed Armitage bomb was dropped by Isikoff and Corn. Of course, Marcy Wheeler’s readers know she had that so-called revelation three months before those reporters. Marcy is a citizen journalist who has followed this story, and often led the reporting, which has kept the crimes committed against Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson from being swept under the rug of convenience and ease.
As a reminder for why Marcy’s book will be so important, I asked her to respond to Rem Reider’s piece this morning, and here is what she wrote to me:
Even if you buy Novak’s story (in spite of the fact that it has changed 4 times), we know Armitage didn’t provide Plame’s name, nor did he tell Novak Plame was covert. Those are the important (and legally serious) aspects of the leak to Novak, not Plame’s employ at the CIA.
I also did a full post to explain why the Armitage "revelation" doesn’t change the importance of this. These three bullets provide the essence of the argument:
- There is ample evidence that Scooter Libby conspired to expose Plame’s identity
- There is ample evidence that Libby’s lies serve one primary purpose–to hide the fact that Dick Cheney was personally involved in–and may have authorized–the leak of Plame’s identity
- Armitage was not the source of the most important information Novak published when he outed Plame
Making this kind of complex story accessible, and shining light into the dark corners overlooked by mainstream media is one of the reasons I have turned to publishing books. I believe people-powered publishing can take on the stories that commercial, corporatized, bottomline, access-oriented journalists seem unwilling or unable to fully cover.
I’ll be sharing more of the process of publishing this book here on FDL as we go along, but for today I just want to thank Marcy for all the hard work she’s done to date, and Jane Hamsher for her courage in taking on this monumental task of trying such an important experiment. I won’t say that no good books get done today, or that all journalism sucks. But there are certain stories and ideas that just will not get the attention they deserve unless the people rise up and make certain they do. This is one of those stories. And you are the people that are rising to the occasion, making sure your fellow citizens learn the truth.
The team behind this book will be much the same as that behind Glenn Greenwald’s How Would a Patriot Act? We learned a number of new lessons on that project, as I did on Markos’ and Jerome’s Crashing the Gate and George Lakoff’s Don’t Think of an Elephant. I’ll be acting as publisher, and I’ve brought on the amazing Safir Ahmed as editor to help craft Marcy’s book into the must-read primer on PlameGate, and on the blogosphere’s emerging role in helping journalists to better do their jobs. Jane, of course, will be adding her expertise and chutzpah to this project at every stage as we go forward, and I expect the FDL community will be absolutely essential to all matters, big and small, to ensure that this book is the best it can be. Marcy’s work must break out beyond the blogs and be read by all Americans who care to know why this case is important, and what it says about the Bush administration–and the American media.
So, if you believe, as I do, that understanding what happened to Valerie Plame is vital to our democracy, and you believe that people-powered publishing is a noble and necessary cause, please give what you can to make sure that this book happens. In the coming days, I’ll be reporting back on our progress, keeping the process as transparent as possible. If this works, and the book makes some money, perhaps this publishing venture can become self-sustaining and we’ll have the money to do the next important book.
I see this as an experiment not unlike the netroots supporting candidates. We have to take some risks and pay to fund our own media right now, if we’re going to get necessary ideas and analysis out. I, for one, am very excited to see what we can build.
Onward!

Yeah Marcy!
Yeah Twisted….Still savoring the Big Blue beat on the Domes eh?
Emptywheel!
Okay … but can we have a snail-mail address for donating, please?? (I’m sure y’all are tired of hearing this, but I’ve been trying to donate since this started, and the ‘donate via plastic’ page insists on having a Paypal account! It didn’t used to do that, I don’t know what happened to it, and I’m frustrated!)
oddball @ 3
You betcha! I have a great photo that tweaks the Domers that apparently ended up on Lloyd’s desk. Ping me at dan “not” at twisted martini dot comb and i’ll send it to you.
Jennifer, how can I get in touch with you?
Jennifer and Jane – After Marcy, is Digby next in line for a book-writng project?
EPU-ed in the Twilight Zone of moderation in the last thread, so trying again here.
Great post, Swopa! And comments, too, tho I read just a few before zipping down here to leave a comment.
My thought:
The best way to defend America is to be America again.
There’s all kinds of examples of verses that can carry this chorus forward:
My slight revision for Swopa’s wonderful succinct sentence in the last thread because it’s open arms to the moderate/Reagan/liberal Republicans who are disgusted by the current leadership.
Open arms to the independents and minority party people who recognize they don’t have enough clout on their own.
And a reminder to Dems/progressives/liberals why our fight matters so much. Because BushCo are going to keep up the negativity as long as it works, and this may be one way to stand up to that. Small stones….
P J Evans @ 5
I’ll have to get back to you on that–apologies. There’s been much to organize in recent days, and I’m afraid we’ve not yet gotten to that. But, email me offline and we can discuss.
jennifer DOT nix AT gmail DOT com.
Jennifer didn’t put in a donation linky, and I can’t make it go directly to the page, so y’all click below the thermometer thingy to the right of the youtube up top.;)
ecoast @ 7
Personally, I’d love to see that, and have reached out to Digby.
Agggh, again with the waiting moderation. What am I doing that’s triggering this?

Kewalo @ 181
Great work Kewalo! Mahalo!
Jennifer, mail coming at ya.
Support for Marcy’s book can be enhanced several ways:
1. More frequent updating of the thermometer. I made a donation 2 days ago and it still hasn’t registered = discouraging.
2. A snail mail post office box, however temporary until a longer term solution is in. The perfect is the enemy of the good: time is of the essence. Lots of people need to remain anonymous but will contribute via a P.O. Box.
3. Some way to differentiate donations for Marcy versus donations to FDL in general. It looks from this side of the table that both kinds of donations are processed identically. How do the powers that be know when a donation is for the book?
4. Can we develop a mechanism to show that we pledge to buy 1 or more copies of the book at publication? Will help get a bridge loan at the bank.
5. How soon can you get onto Amazon, for pre-purchases and reviews? [cred: I was the first and still prime spotlight review for Glenn.]
6. Just a question: do you need the full $65,000 before publishing can proceed, or can it proceed with simultaneous fundraising.
7. Has anyone contacted known wealthy progressive donors?
op99 in the last thread suggests taking a look at something. So I did.
One of the commenters at that site says something of interest. At least it is to me. The commenter, Buffalo Girl tells us:
“You know what else? I think the focus needs to be less on leaders like Hillary, and more on the actual people of New York. If we want to elect more progressive leaders then we need more progressive voters. You need to change their minds first.”
I think what Buffalo Girl is saying is worthy of reflection.

PRETENSIONS TO EMPIRE

288 pp. The New Press. $24.95.
HOW BUSH RULES
Chronicles of a Radical Regime.
By Sidney Blumenthal.
420 pp. Princeton University Press. $26.95.
Since the president’s re-election, loathers of George W. Bush have had no shortage of cudgels with which to club him: a distressingly belated response to Hurricane Katrina; an experiment in warrantless wiretapping; a modest parade of indictments; a nation-building project so distant from its original intent that our troops are now caught in a proto-civil war. One can certainly understand how these developments — and Bush’s correspondingly rotten approval ratings — have emboldened the opposition. The problem is that these developments have also made the president’s critics more susceptible to rhetorical excess, and Bush, like his predecessor, already has an impressive gift for bringing out the yawping worst in those who disagree with him. Otherwise reasonable people go slightly berserk on the subject of his motives; on the subject of his morality, the hinged fall off their door frames and even the stable become unglued. This is both an aesthetic problem and a substantive one. Substantively, it means gerrymandering evidence so that inconvenient facts don’t make it onto the map. And aesthetically, it means speaking in a compromising and not wholly credible tone.
[continues in the same tone]
You guys need to read Poynter’s more often (daily!)…Keith Olberman already responded to Reider (who, generally, is a good journalist).
http://poynter.org/forum/view_post.asp?id=11830
Here’s what our man Keith Olberman wrote in response to that article (at Romenesko):
“With all respect to Rem Rieder, the Armitage story didn’t get the rather simplistic coverage he seems to have asked for, in part because it was hardly simple.
Firstly, the source’s version of how it happened (’offhand remark’) apparently was at such variance from the columnist’s version of how it happened (’he called me in and deliberately told me this because he thought I should use it in my column’).
Secondly, even if the Armitage version was entirely correct and the Novak version entirely fictitious, there is still the knotty problem of why the White House picked up the Plame/Wilson ball so quickly, ran with it so aggressively, and were so prepared to do both, in the first place.
The simple equation that has been spread — Armitage confessed, therefore the White House did nothing wrong, so the media’s covering up its own mistake — is pejorative and, what should disturb Mr. Rieder most, far TOO simple.”
Er, Eric beat me to it.
i gave to this project. can’t wait to read it all in print soon.

I saw Olbermann address this, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t also be addressed here as a reason for why we are doing the book, kids!

“I’m sure Mr. Reider has poured over every last document”
Sorry, but the old legal proofreader in me raised her tired old head and said “No, that should be ‘pored over’.”
I know it’s just a small quibble, but if people are going to spotlight this elsewhere it’s better to have it right…
Why should we have to answer the questions?
Here’s my question, with props to Swopa:
Why won’t George Bush and his Rubberstamp Republican Congress let America be America?
Had enough? There’s a better way. Vote Dem.
Jennifer Nix,
Did you or Marcy Wheeler pass along your criticism about the Whatever piece directly to Mr. Reider or the AJR? Did you get a response?
Do you find it useful to communicate directly with commentators with whom you disagree; do you think discussing these matters in an open source forum like the Firedoglake blog is a more useful way to challenge articles, do you often “disagree” both by directly contacting a pundit and in an open forum?
egregious @ 16
I am having a hell of a time trying to get comments to work today. Taking forever to load. Let’s see, point by point:
1. I was told by Jane yesterday that the thermometer is, in fact, up to date. I don’t think it’s sensitive enough to register each and every donation, but we have generally raised just under $20,000 via FDL.
2. I’ve got the request in to Jane about a snail mail address and info on to whom chex should be addressed.
3. I am told the thermometer to the right is only meant to show donations to the book project. Not FDL donations in general.
4. We are trying to cull what worked and didn’t work from the lessons of recent books we’ve done, and pre-sales and pledges-to-buy are currently under consideration. But, for this to work, I believe it has to be seen in the same vein as giving money to candidates up front, whom you hope will represent your views well. There is a need right now for progressives to fund their own media projects, in order to ensure that our views, analysis and new ideas get into the national discourse. This is an experiment to see how much support there is for people-powered publishing.
5. We have to know that we’ve raised enough money to get the project underway, and then we’ll be calling on a designer to create the cover. Once we have the cover and the distributor lined up, we can get the book posted on Amazon and other online retailers.
6. We are not waiting to raise all of the money in order to start. We have, in fact, started. Marcy’s at work, Safir’s on board and we are trusting that this project will be supported by the community. So, it’s underway.
7. The word is out to the progressive community. But, if you’ve ever tried to raise money from wealthy progressives, you know how difficult it can be to get a good idea funded. They always want you to build it first, and then they come. That’s why we are going straight to the people, to show how much support there is for this book and people-powered publishing. I believe that once we’ve raised the majority of the money, bigger funders will likely step in to cap it off. I’ll be writing more about the economics, depressing as they can be, about publishing in the coming days. But, the idea here is that we are trying to build something new, to do a public service for this country, and to make sure this story is told.
Jennifer, FWIW… would you consider “market testing” the title on people you randomly run into? All the titles mentioned in your post grab my attention… except “16 Words.” For one thing, the others include verbs. They also suggest actions and characters, which draw readers to books, even nonfiction. Finally, “16 Words” conjures images in my mind only of a State of the Union address, and White House paperwork. As a Plameoholic, I know how much more betrayal, mystery and intrigue this story contains.

I believe that ‘big media’ is distrustful of, and feels threatened by the Democrats. I conjure images of corporate media concerned only about the ‘bottom line’. And this trumps objectivity and fairness. Just like any other business that has outgrown their sense of social responsibility, the owners of the media conglomerates are by their very nature interested in power, which naturally translates into money. And the Bush-neo-cons play the MSM like a cheap two dollar banjo. The Republicans and their control of the media is the natural order of things.
Today, Edward R. Murrow would be out of work. And with no employment leads. Olbermann, heir to Murrow, is an enigma.

We’re not absolutely settled on this title, though I like it. We can explain more in the subtitle.
This is something we’ll be working on with Marcy and Safir. Perhaps we can bring a next round of possibilities here to FDL and see what folks like best. But, I do have to say, I like 16 Words for a number of reasons. We can get into them in another post.
Jen – Subtitle would be a big help – the “closer.”
Concerning assumptions:
Watch it on TV – per several FDL posts, some people are still mercifully free of this blood pressure modifier.
Look it up on the computer – that’s what they told how many? older Americans in the Part D debacle.
Check it out on YouTube – how many people like me who are still on dial-up?

After reading their comments on the small town in NC, I couldn’t help but think of the residents of numerous small towns in Europe who had no idea what they were doing in those camps in Dachau and Auschwitz. This is happening in AMERICA. These things are being done in OUR name, paid for with OUR tax dollars. I don’t recognize my country any more, and find it harder to criticize those who slept while Hitler’s minions did their work. Hell, even the polls are little easier to comprehend, when you realize there are still people who defend Hitler.

Jennifer:
How about using Arianna’s way of vetting each chapter individually as a post on FDL and get reactions to those posts/chapters? Not only would this enhance the project, it would also be a reminder to donate.
Jennifer, thanks for your answers to my 7 questions above. My question #3 was not about the thermometer but about the fact that donations for both the book and fdl in general might look the same when received.
3. Some way to differentiate donations for Marcy versus donations to FDL in general. It looks from this side of the table that both kinds of donations are processed identically. How do the powers that be know when a donation is for the book?
And finally, the donation in question should have been enough to register, which is why I am questioning whether it was received. We had been at a plateau for a while, and the entire purpose of this donation was to get things moving again.
Hopefully there will be more funds available after the election. I think a lot of us are stretching to support political candidates between now and then.
Best of luck with this work: we WILL make it happen.

new thread
Richard Armitage has stated that the State Deparment memo dated June 10, 2002 and repubished for Colin Powell in Africa on July 7, 2000 was his sole source.
Robert Novak’s article contained information not contained in that June 10th memo, which was marked (S)ecret in the area identifying Valerie Wilson as the wife of Joseph Wilson. From this data, how did Robert Novak know to ask the CIA to confirm employment of Valerie Plame? One of the reasons Armitage did not know that he was the primary leaker was because Novak used the name “Valerie Plame” and Armitage did not know her by that name, although he would have to be pretty dense not to realize that the Valerie Plame, wife of Joseph Wilson, was the same person as the Valerie Wilson that he read about.
Novak also included other details not mentioned in the June 10th memo. So, just where did Robert Novak get this additional information?
While Libby is the only person indicted for lying (perjury) he certainly is not the only key participant that is lying.
I still think that Valerie Plame can see through buildings. Not real thick buildings, but still….
Lyin’ Joe Wilson has been improperly respected for the way he has shrewdly changed his “truth”. But they both look swell in Prada. And those VF pix, oh dahling….
