Chris Bowers has a great number-crunching post up on MyDD today that shows the need for some serious GOTV efforts for Democrats for the November election. We have to turn out our base. Period. And we need to do so through the usual — and some new — means of energizing Democratic-leaning voters.
…However, I simply cannot imagine any way for Democrats to win this election if Republicans turn out at higher rates than Democrats, as the Gallup poll LV model must undoubtedly show them doing. If we hold a nine-point edge among registered voters, than we should also hold a nine-point advantage among likely voters. If we fail to do so, then we have utterly failed in our field operations, our message, and our media strategy. You cannot find a nine-point nation swing within Independents. According to 2004 turnout levels, that would require moving 17% of Independents out of the Republican column and into the Democratic column. According to 2006 turnout levels, where Independent turnout will probably be even lower, an even larger swing will probably be required.
Democrats must turn out in higher rates than Republicans in order for us to win this election. This is requires a media strategy that targets African-Americans, since African-Americans are the ultimate Democratic base demographic. This requires a Latino GOTV program that is not vaporware. This is going to require a field strategy that targets Democrats, not just trying to increase the vote. This requires candidates to actually say they are Democrats in their commercials. Above all else, this is going to require not ducking Iraq, since nothing is on the mind of voters, especially Democratic voters, more than Iraq. If we lose on November 7th, and wake up the next day with Republicans still in charge of both branches of Congress, it will be because we did not do a good enough job getting Democratic voters to the polls. We have made real gains in partisan self-identification over the past two years relative to Republicans (see here, here and here). If we end up getting beat in turnout anyway, as the Gallup and Fox polls suggest we will, then our leadership will have squandered the best chance to retake Congress in a generation because they simply failed to see their own base as a meaningful part of the overall campaign equation.
Read Chris’ whole piece — he’s got some great links and some interesting number analysis in it.
Single women have been a traditionally under-targeted group for the Democratic party, for reasons that I cannot fathom. Women in general need to be more of a target audience — hello, we represent 50% or more of the US population, thank you very much — and yet we tend to fall by the wayside in mailers and targeted messaging. Short-sighted, I say. Taylor has been doing some work on this issue, and we have been trying to raise its profile, but there is clearly a whole lot more to do. (Any thoughts you all have on how to do just that would be most welcome.)
What can you do to help GOTV and in other voting efforts for Democrats between now and November? Lots!
– MoveOn.org is putting together some "Call for Change" house parties for people to make calls to GOTV. You can find information on how to host one or participate here.
– You can register to vote here (or help friends and relatives register to vote).
– Lots and lots of volunteer opportunities at the DoMoreThanVote website. Check it out!
– The DNC website is still working its "100 Days" campaign. Lots of great ideas here!
– Contact your local Democratic group and offer some time to volunteer for canvassing, phone calls, filling out mailers, whatever. Also, check into Democracy for America. Or any number of other groups that work on progressive issues.
– The AFL-CIO and other labor groups have a lot going on as well — if you are a union member, check with your rep.
– Get involved and volunteer with a local candidate. Or donate (we have a handy list of candidates on our BlueAmerica page).
The bottom line: it is going to take all of us pulling together to win this election in November. Please pick an action and take part! Now, let’s get to work!

(from the article Billmon linked to)
This recent polling data tells me that voters have a clear perspective on the war in Iraq…perhaps more cogent than either Party. They feel it is being handled poorly, they know what a civil war looks like, they believe Congress has failed to do its part in guiding and overseeing the executive branch, and they realize that the notion of exporting democracy to the Middle East is a Bush Doctrine that fails to recognize the realities in the region. Finally, they believe that Middle East stability is important and that a withdrawal that leaves Iraq in chaos may well be detrimental to the United States.
That, my friends, is one spot on analysis and suggests that voters have discerned fact from fiction with an impressive demonstration of acuity. Perhaps both parties will someday learn that the truth is, in the final analysis, the most powerful campaign strategy available. Don’t hold your breath.

From the Chris Bowers quote: You cannot find a nine-point nation swing within Independents.
This brings to mind this question: How much of a swing is required? I don’t understand why CB thinks that 9 percent is necessary among independents given where we stand at the moment. Anyone have an opinion?

cbl,
The sense is, of course, a Get Out the Vote effort that is real. Vaporware is a little misused here. It refers to an anti-competitive Microsoft practice of announcing that it was working on software for some particular application. It often wasn’t. The software didn’t exist but the effect was to preemptively scare off software developers from working in areas that might challenge Microsoft sometime in the future.

VOTE EARLY!
Fellow Travelers,
I always vote by absentee ballot at least one week before the election. I don’t take up line space on election day. I spend the days before election day getting my friends to vote at lunchtime or reminding them they need to vote and asking them to go to the town clerk’s office that day. I usually volunteer to help GOTV the weekend before when it is most critical and/or help with visibility or GOTV on election day.
I call everyone I even suspect who might skip out of the process.
I can’t emphasize enough the value of absentee ballots. On election day, no logistical worries for your own vote, and you have two unencumbered hands on Tuesday to help as much as possible to get our votes to the polls.
Every state has different laws on absentee ballots. Call your town clerk/city hall or better yet, the candidate you are supporting, to get the information you need to vote early. Well organized campaigns agressively hustle absentee votes and there are a lot of shitty Republicans who nonetheless have organized campaigns.
Better yet, volunteer for candidates you are supporting to help them harvest absentee ballots. With so many things happening between now and November 7, they probably don’t have enough people to help in the absentee voter department. Candidates already have lists of tens of thousands of confirmed supporters. Grab the list and get these identified voters to the polls early rather than losing them in the GOTV shuffle on Nov 4-7.

I’ve done absentee ballots for candidates in five different states and the proecedures in each are different. Also, individual state laws change frequently as well so make sure you speak with someone in a campaign who is up to speed on the latest procedure.

Absentee voting is good but CAN WE PLEASE FIX THE VOTING MACHINES????? I have been running around screaming this since the 2000 election. I’m hoarse. I’m tired. I’m incredulous that the election is less than 60 days away and we still have machines that are hackable and/or not reliable. Getting our base out doesn’t fucking matter if the votes aren’t counted. I’m beginning to feel INSANE.
Impeachment Happens says:
September 19th, 2006 at 12:09 pm *
The GOoPers would point out, most likely, that while the Constitution gives us the right to vote, it doesn’t say anything about those votes being counted. (It’s an implied right. Ever wonder why they’ve been going on about implied and enumerated rights? You’re looking at it.)
Caoimhin Laochdha @ 22
I’m quoting your comment so it will be repeated. That is VERY important.
Impeachment happens – You are not insane. Just ahead of the tipping point curve. When it’s all over Wells Fargo will treat our ballots and the macines that handle them like they now treat money and atm’s.
What isn’t being said: some candidates, I’m not saying who, took the fricking summer off. Instead of getting their GOTV efforts underway by recruiting volunteers, getting time committments, organizing their canvassing, registering voters, and answering potential volunteer’s offers to help, they went to the shore or on vacation or somewhere. In a year like this one when so much is at stake, I was genuinely surprised to see the campaigns as lackadaisical as they apparently were. Very, VERY annoying. Unsurprisingly, the two campaigns, one of them a senate race that was predicted to be a shoo-in for us but is now a dead-heat, are not faring too well in the polling department. Maybe these candidates feel they have little to gain by putting a modicum of effort into GOTV in some traditionally red counties. I can understand that they might want to put their efforts elsewhere. But if they never bother to contact their volunteers, for SURE they won’t have adequate GOTV resources.
Just stoopid, IMHO.

The finest pirate that ever did sail,
They called him Captain Teal.
In battle, he shows impeccable class,
And ev’ry Sunday, you’d see him at mass,
In taverns, the ladies would all grab his… attention!
The handsome Captain Teal.
When gambling, none could rival his luck,
He’s daring, he’s dashing, he’s known for his pluck!
The lasses, they say he’s an excellent… conversationalist!
The charming Captain Teal.
When his fine ship is moored at the dock,
A marvel to see, around it they flock,
The mast reminds some of his impressive… vocabulary!
The noble Captain Teal.
[allegro!]
His picture will hang in the most hallowed halls,
He’s piloted sloops through some harrowing squalls,
Climbs fast to the crow’s nest and he never falls,
He’s always victorious in duels and in brawls,
He brings home the booty, spectacular hauls!
He’s never been beaten, not as he recalls!
His singing’s exquisite, and it never galls!
From bar, to bar, he leads men in crawls!
He crashes through gates, and vaults over walls!
He’s quick to engage, no he never stalls!
‘Cause this is a man with a whole… lot… of… character!

I know fraud existed before electronic voting, but hand counting sure does seem appealing right now. My point, however, is that all of the work of others to try to secure a Dem takeover of the Senate may be for nothing, if they’re counting on good ole Democratic states, like Maryland, as safe from Republicans. That’s where my despair lies.

One idea to GOTV for women, especially single moms, would be to have voter day care on election day. This could be at private homes or maybe even churches or schools if it is put forward as non-partisan. A little digging finds that each county is responsible for it’s own voting device. I will add this that I found. Even if it were a Diebold machine.
29A.12.085
Paper record.
Beginning on January 1, 2006, all electronic voting devices must produce a paper record of each vote that may be accepted or rejected by the voter before finalizing his or her vote. This record may not be removed from the polling place, and must be human readable without an interface and machine readable for counting purposes. If the device is programmed to display the ballot in multiple languages, the paper record produced must be printed in the language used by the voter. Rejected records must either be destroyed or marked in order to clearly identify the record as rejected.
Thanks for calling B. S.. I have no problem admitting my mistakes. I just like to learn from them.

VoteHere is the same bunch that was trying to create an internet voting scheme, and were one of the bidders for the armed forces overseas voting proposal called SERVE. They’ve gone through a number of investors and are now owned by yet another company. They aren’t keen on opening up their software for inspection lately, and this latest arrangement by Washington state to include Microsoft in the system ought to set off alarm bells everywhere.
And, at one time (don’t know if that’s still true), they had a couple of spooks on the board, Adm. Bill Owens, a vice chairman of SAIC (a big contractor to the CIA), and Robert Gates, former director of the CIA.
It’s also very worrisome that they’re trying to control both ends of the process–voting on the back end and voting registration on the front end.
Cheers.

There are two bills (HR550 and S330). We like the House bill’s language better. Personally I like http://www.verifiedvoting.org. Great organization. Through them you can find out about volunteering, not just to be a monitor on election day, but about monitoring the audits. VERY IMPORTANT. Yes, voting early (when your state permits) is great as is absentee voting but as you all know we need to secure the voting machines across the board, not just in some states. If you go to the website they have a lovely color coded update on what states have passed what laws, etc. It’s scary though. Especially when you read that each side is about to spend $500 BILLION on the upcoming election. But the way I look at it? The dems might as well just FLUSH THAT MONEY DOWN THE TOILET if the machines don’t work.
And while we’re flushing, we can just flush the Constitution as well. Sorry to sound so down but I keep getting these emails from all the dem organizations and NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE VOTING MACHINES. And I’m like, “What planet do you live on?” And then I think, “Well, if you’re not smart enough to fix the voting machines, then I really don’t want you running the country.” Maybe what we’re all witnessing is a kind of Political Evolution. I don’t know.

Come on, Senator Sunnabitch–that doesn’t even scan well. And take that swastika armband off when you say it.
I recommend County Parties first. They generally have the best voter lists and know which precincts and voters need to be targeted. They work closely with the local candidates and know the terrain much, much better than other orgs. In 2004, there were sometimes 5 people going to the same house within a few days (MoveOn, ACORN, Sierra Club, Dems, etc). This is a big waste of time and turns off voters. County parties–generally–are the best organized. (Disclaimer: I’ve been active with my county Party for several years. Yes, we really do have grassroots in the Democratic Party.)
No matter how many you get out to vote it won’t matter if “someone” is able to hack the machines!

THE LET AMERICA VOTE ACT!
CALL ON CONGRESS TO PASS ‘EMERGENCY PAPER BALLOT LEGISLATION’ NOW!Democracy is at stake. After at least two years of reporting in exhaustive details on these matters, and at this late stage of the game, I believe the above “reform” is, unfortunately, the most we can likely hope for in time to have any real impact in mitigating a full-on train wreck during this November’s crucial excercise of the rite of democracy.
Why not try to get the DLC on board to win for a change? They need pumping up as much as the “base.”
