It seems every time No-Show Joe opens his mouth these days, he is touting the virtues of bipartisanship and decrying Ned Lamont for engaging in partisan politics. It’s a nice sound bite if you can get away with it, and the press have certainly let him do so. But I think that Joe’s definition of bipartisanship is slightly different than mine. In a truly bipartisan world, you give something and you get something. There is a spirit of compromise, of give-and-take. But that sentiment has been dead to the modern GOP for quite some time now, and it’s a sign of Joe’s essential cluelessness that he is the last to know.
As Digby says:
Grover Norquist said it and he meant it: they Republicans consider bi-partisanship date rape — and it ain’t the Democrats who are slipping the roofies in the kool-aid.At some point in the last five years it should have occurred to Joe, who had no wingnut constituents to whom he needed to pander, that he was being used like a blow-up doll at a frat party.
Joe slides this by reporter after reporter, and nobody bothers to ask him: what did you get for it, Joe?
He laid down for virtually every plank of the Republican agenda. He confabbed with the Gang of 14 to put the most appallingly regressive right-wing judges on the bench and I don’t recall them letting Joe have anyone to the left of Atilla the Hun as a "gimme" for his efforts. He was an enthusiastic war pimp who castigated the President’s critics as traitors. He led the efforts to block universal health care.
What did you get for it, Joe?
No-Show Joe brags about all the earmarks he’s delivered for the state, but the fact remains that Connecticut is #49 out of 50 states when it comes to money that the Federal Government spends in the state relative to dollars paid in federal taxes (PDF). The answer is they didn’t give him anything. They didn’t have to. He’s a chump.
What did you get for it, Joe?
It took a lot of prodding from the blogosphere to finally get reporters to start asking why Joe wasn’t talking about his walk-in-the-park war in the weeks running up to the primary, but it happened. Every time Joe, Dangerstein and TamSun yammer on with their fake "bipartisan" claptrap, reporters should rightfully be asking what exactly it is his Republican friends reached across the aisle and gave Joe for all his loyalty. The fact is Joe got nothing. As Digby said, "he got rolled." And it’s high time a few of them started pointing that out.
So please familiarize yourself with our "Spotlight" link at the bottom of the page, click "regional" for "CT" and have a look at the wonderful list of local journalists Mark Steckel has put together in Connecticut. Then ever so politely you might ask them if they would inquire:
What did you get for it, Joe?

Ew. I don’t know what kind of frat party uses a blow-up doll of Joe Liebermann…
Every time Joe decided to be “bi-partisan” the Repubs took a step to the right…dragging him along with it – and the idiot never saw it and, apparently, even now, doesn’t see what happened to him. As a result, he stopped being a centrist democrat, he became a Repug himself.
He’s an idiot and CT Democratic voters have said enough..but he still marches to the Repub drumbeat.
Waht is the expression? “Now that we know what you are, we’re just talking price.”
If that’s not right, someone else knows what it should be.
“What Did You Get For It, Joe?”
Perhaps 13 pieces of Republican and neo-con silver. For the dead American soldiers and innocent Iraqi, Palestinian, Israeli and Lebanese women, children and men.

You know I really believed he would act like a gentleman and retire after his loss to Ned Lamont.Guess I’m on a wrong roll lately!
Anyone ever do a tally to see what percentage of votes he fell in with the GOP? Would be nice to have something to throw in his face everytime he talks about his 90% Dem voting record…
I suspect that on the important issues, he went GOP.
What did you get for it, Joe?

OT – Mean Jean Schmidt has got to go
I gave some money to Dr, Victoria Wulsin, who is running against Mean Jean Schmidt. Victoria was tied with her in one poll, and we know how close Paul Hackett came. This seems a very winnable race based on the above. And you get three for one: get rid of Mean Jean, who called Murtha a traitor, make a differeince in Ohio, and get a true progressive who is an expert on health care.
Dr. Wulsin called me personally this morning and we chatted at some length. She seems the real deal to me. This is a low money campaign where a little money can mean a lot to her campaign. So please think about contributing, even a small amount.–this is Ohio, people. Think about watching Mean Jean pop up on cable for the next two years–that alone is pretty motivating, and you get a very smart, experienced, passionate Progressive candidate if Wulsin wins. I think she needs money now, so I am going to do what I am recommending to everyone here who has a little cash to do. Small donations count in this race.

Give the nice lady a prize! Consider his votes on Alito – Joe voted for cloture (against a filibuster which would have stopped the nomination). Then, when that passed, he was able to vote against Alito on the main vote – when it didn’t matter because the Republicans were solid.
If he really thought Alito was not suitable for the Supreme Court, he should have voted to sustain the filibuster. Instead, he ducked, then looked for cover in a meaningless final vote.
Percentages don’t matter – there are too many conflicting ways of slicing the vote tallies. On the other hand, when you look at specific votes, like those on Alito, the picture becomes quite clear.
Joe, you’ve either been used by the Republicans or you’ve been revealed to be a Republican – take your pick.
Bustedknuckles #13 – bwahahahahah!!
Tuck you, Joe. Tuck the hell off.
Little orphan annie secret decoder ring:
When Lieberman speaks, you must remember to substitute “Obey Bush” every time he says “Bipartisan” or “Unity” or
“We need more hugging“.
Once you know the code, Lieberman makes perfect sense.
Joe blow is a rat bastard.
Thank Goodness for Ned!
And here’s Lieberman on hugging, in case you missed it:
“The fact that Lamont was making a big deal out of the fact that George Bush gave me a hug after one State of the Union speech, you know maybe we’d better in this country if there was more hugging and less hating,” he said. “I mean it.”
fran @ 11
You were NOT wrong to assume, (perhaps hope would be a better word) that Mr. Lieberman would act the part of a “gentleman”. I too hoped for the same outcome in this case. So if in fact you were wrong on Joe Lieberman doing ‘the right thing’, then that, makes at least two of us who were wrong. And it certainly won’t be the last time I am proved wrong.
Joe, being demonstrably anti-materialistic, settled for a kiss. He’s both cheap and easy – slut.

Churchill to woman at dinner party: Would you sleep with me for a million pounds?
Woman: Well … I suppose so.
Churchill: All right, would you sleep with me for ten pounds?
Woman: Of course not! What kind of woman do you think I am?
Churchill: Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we’re just haggling over the price.
If the conversation ever did occur, I doubt it was with Lady Astor, who would not have said yes to Winston even for a million pounds. On the other hand, I believe the following exchange really did take place:
Lady Astor: Sir Winston, you are drunk!
Churchill: And you, madam, are ugly. But in the morning, I shall be sober.

I agree, Peterr – it isn’t the percentages that matter, it’s the votes. “It’s Only Fair” Joe would probably tell you that while he, personally did not think Alito should be on the Court, it was “only fair” that the entire body get to register a vote. Kind of like all the registered voters of CT should have a chance to vote for him…

I’m thinking of Karl Rove’s dictum of attacking the enemy’s strengths, not weaknesses. What, exactly, is Joe’s strength? Habit?
Lamont’s blog is (rightfully) going after Lieberman’s we’re not involved in Afghanistan remark (WTF???) and I thought, good, they’re going after his strength. But then I thought, who thinks foreign policy is his strength, besides himself? Domestic policy? Nothing.
He really is just running on entitlement.
I’m still shaking my head over the fact that Joe want to wait a bit (maybe till after the elections and/or the Iran campaign?) to answer questions about the war.
He’s turned the corner from ponder to ponderous.

Thing is, he forgot who truly was paying him to knock boots (and not lick Bush’s) were the voters of CT, not Tim Russert and the other assorted misanthropes who dominate our news culture. God how I would love to be able to vote against Joe, I have to settle for voting against Mike McGavick, hardly a good substitute. I know Maria Cantwell has not always been the best Dem (although she did show Ted Stevens a thing or three when she helped block oil drilling up in Alaska) she has shown some fight to Bush, but not nearly enough (she thought that this election would be closer than it is because of the disputed Governor’s race in ‘04). I have a feeling she will become more partisan. When one side has John freaking Yoo, comprimise is an impossible stupidity.

What did he get for it? Well, I think Joe’s brain works about as slowly as he talks and after 9/11 he believed that being an ersatz Republican, tough-daddy Bush’s buddy, would cement him as frontrunner in the presidential sweepstakes of 2008. Of course, in his blind ambition (the Jewish Macbeth — who knew?) ole Joe didn’t notice the war in Iraq barreling down the tubes and the electorate beginning to hurl over Bush’s lies and incompetence. Hubris, Joe. It’ll bite you on the ass every time.

Nice that someone (a reader) actually bothered to check this time around about yet another wild story.
Taking someone off the blogroll usually happens because it is getting too unweidly, and for no other reason than we don’t seem to be covering the same types of stuff and I no longer use it as a regular reference. Tom MaGuire stays on there because we frequently do cover the same topics, and he pretty much proves there is no limit to the nasty shit you can say about us and still stay on there.

OT somewhat but office holders & candidates should be paying a lot more attention to the best progressive blogs (such as FDL, of course) for prolific & well researched information links. I don’t know many times I have wondered why rep, senator, or candidate so & so are not better informed. FDL & other awesome blogs are instantly on the job & put most of msm to shame. How hard can it be for them to assign some more staff to monitor the blogs? One would think more Dems would take advantage of such great sources, especially when so much of the research is already done by bloggers. Those Dems who haven’t figured this out yet need to catch up.

“KURTZ: But doesn’t that run the risk of making journalists look like they’re part of the opposition?”
???? The job is to ask tough questions and also questions targeted at getting useful information from EVERYONE. Everyone should feel like on the one had journalists are their opposition, and on the other hand journalists are their best opportunity to get actual information and facts into the public forum.
EVERYONE should also feel like journalists are their least likely means of pushing talking points, jingoism or diversionary tactics.

Following up a bit on Jane’s O’Beirne piece, US News & World Report has two interesting reads. I already linked to one which details and expands on information that we have seen here from Matt O or on The Muckraker, but it is nice to see all kinds of threads tied together in a very good piece.
It also has a related piece, about MZM’s involvement in the Iraq war.
Since it’s private contract analysts were primarily running the show at the Pentagon’s National Ground Intelligence Center
According to the article, Wade also got the early contract (March 2003 for 1.2 mill) to supply 21 Arab linquists for the war (remember, btw, the Edmonds whistleblowing on the GITMO interrogator who failed both English proficiency and foreign language proficiency in the language he was supposed to be interpreting – but who had good contacts).
for no-show Joe, bipartisanship isn’t a matter of give and take, its a matter of quelling opposition.

WHOA — Major MARY Alert!
NYT ledes with Arar:
As for going to Lieberman’s strengths, that’s a matter of perception, I guess–what we think are his strengths (and there’s reasonable debate about him not really having any) and what he thinks his strengths to be.
The bipartisanship business, well, Joe didn’t get nuthin’, not even the “I blew Bush” t-shirt. Case closed on that.
But, I’m reasonably sure that he thinks well of his working relationship with DC insiders. So, wouldn’t it be luverly to get a list of lobbyists (besides his wife) with whom he “works closely.” And, I’ll bet his appointments calendar would be a joy to read.
He also thinks his other strength is national security. So, poking that one in its oversized paunch might bring some results (although, in this post-WWII age, the voters think that spending more money on defense is the same thing as being safer–it’s not true, but try to convince them of that).
Joe is bi-partisan because he says he is and that’s enough for the media. In the same way, he’s more holy and more righteous thatyou or me because he says he is and that’s all it takes. More and more these days, I’m reminded of a story I heard years ago when I was a kid.
Supposedly Abe Lincoln asked a guy, “How many legs would a dog have if you call his tail a leg?”
The guy answered, “Well, five.”
And Lincoln said,”No, only four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg.”
In exchange for his Democratic credentials and whatever ethics and integrity he might once have actually had (I doubt there was very much, tho) Joe gets to eat old crow that Cheney shot in the face somewhere.
I watched Tim Russert on tv yesterday (a repeat of the George Allen debate). He asked George several times “If you are elected, will you serve out your whole term?” George Allen would NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION. Why is this?
“I sent you there to make money … I didn’t send you there to fix Iraq.”
Maybe Wade said it, but it’s Cheney’s credo.
lotus @101 – I think that’s the first I’ve seen electric shock in print as one of the things being done.
Still waiting for the questions about the 82 unaccounted for extreme rendition persons – and if the name el-Masri would appear on the list.
lotus @ 125
everybody’s bitching about the last season of the Sopranos, but I can’t wait to see it again just to see Tony Soprano, Katrina profiteer, say “Dick Cheney for President, of the fuckin’ universe” again
ccmask @ 124
Cause he plans on running for preznit if he wins! I asked Shalaigh Murray this question today in the Wapo chat:
C&L has linked to this post now.
WHOA – lotus – that Arar story?!!?
So the “state secret” was “oops”?
How horribly, horribly sad is that.
Two known, mistaken, torture-kidnaps and our Department of Justice is actively covering up the criminal activity in both cases as State Secrets.
Yoo couldn’t be more proud.
darkblack
thanks for the mammaries
and sorry darling, there’s no way I’m clicking on anything with the words “bathtub” or “Norquist” in it – just now beginning to recover from the nude Norquist/Goldberg hot tub frolic from a few months back – and Attaturk still refuses to post warnings for his more sensitve readers !
oh look – Lou Dobbs is spotlighting the Haliburton whistleblower
… and pushing for legislation to make it less likely that anyone will ever discover our other “oops” and to guarantee that no one will ever be held accountable.
It’s just too much.
Angie– I was thinking they would put someone in his spot (if that is possible) once he wins.
You know, Tucker’s headline on the screen is “Is McCain risking it all?”. It’s always about these so called leaders and never about our soldiers. Just like Bush–rather than admit defeat and go down as the worst prez ever, he will keep playing the soldiers as pawns in his little game. I’m so sick of it. All because the soldiers volunteered to go– like they deserve to be treated this way. Geezz…..
Tucker can’t go to Iraq b/c there might be a Dancing With the Stars reunion special, or The Surreal World might call….
ccmask @ 133
I really don’t know the rules for that, ccmask– perhaps Joe Lieberman can tell us since he ran for his Senate seat while running for VP– he must know. (LOL)
Prairie Sunshine @ 15
I believe that is more accurately (or, at least, more commonly) attributed to George Bernard Shaw.
ccmask @ 134
I asked my buddy in the reserves what he thought of the CIC saying that waterboarding and feces facials were okey dokey for US troops.
He was none too happy.
Lookie, old cracker Saxby Chambliss is longing for the good old days.

cbl @ 131
cbl, t’its nothin’…At FDL, I am ‘…a warning for our more sensitive readers’…Eye bleach futures are looking rosier every day.
;>)
Ya think joe4joe could pull off an ad like this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5RKJFYC-tI
Didn’t think so.
Vote Ned and save lives.
Mary.
Just … Mary.
I don’t know what to say to make either of us feel better.
“Find out why Keith Olbermann thinks Bush owes you an apology, tonight“
Hoo boy!
I’m so pissed about that image…I have my photoshopping guy working on a much funnier graphic, but now it’s kind of been scooped. It’s a hard, competitive blogosphere out there; the slow gets trodden upon by the quick. ;)
And after that horrifying visual from Digby, I’m kind of glad that I never pledged a frat!
As far as the local media goes, it’s been very frustrating to read Joe’s talking points reproduced verbatim in countless articles, with almost no attempt to challenge them. The situation seems to be slowly improving, but it’s not enough.
The “Lamont email” controversy is a case in point. So far, a lot of people in CT believe that Ned flip-flopped because of that quote taken out of context and spoon-fed to a lazy and feeble local media.
Replay of today’s Webb/Allen debate tonite on cspan 1 acc to the website:
and the replay of Byron Dorgan’s DPC meeting at 10:30 too.
Both highly recommended :)
NBC Evening News in B’dad . . . just the odd slips of sound I caught:
Shia gunmen from the Ministry of Health battling Sunni gunmen from the Ministry of Electricity
Average (what period?): 40 people a day killed in B’dad
The country’s major growth industry: coffin-making
As one who did, I can assure you that none of those would have gotten in. The black ball would have been presented immediately. And yes we did put their pictures on the wall, like Animal House. Toga!
4,000 people at Ann Richards’ funeral today.
Jessye Norman singing — that’s all I recognize of NBC’s shots
4,000 people came to your funeral: how magnificent you were, Ann.
Kos is really taking this Webb-Allen (aka felix the caca) race seriously…Good For him! You don’t have to live in Virginia to LOVE Webb and the Truth he stands for honorably.
Isn’t anyone going to comment on Nate’s ad? I am dedicated to ignoring all commercials and political ads on the little bit of tv I watch, and so cannot really be useful. I thought it powerful, but what do I know?
LindyH @ 87
I’m an Ohio gal originally. Sherrod’s ads brought tears to my eyes. He is the real thing.
Hope he can win by a large enough margin to defeat voting machine fraud. Initiatives in 2005 forbidding recounts were projected to fail by a 2:1 margin. Instead they passed by a 2:1 margin. Polls of the Columbus Dispatch, ALWAYS within one percent, were off by 35%.
Sure and no chance the 2005 or 2004 vote was the result of tampering…
OHIO WAKE UP, YOUR VOTE IS BEING STOLEN.
Ohio’s vote matters for the Senate this year, and is PIVOTAL for the ‘08 Presidential election, perhaps our last opportunity to stand against a true dictatorship. I do not use these words lightly. Ohio is it people for all the marbles.
for Mary,
God less A-mer-i-ca
Land that I love
Stand be-side her and guide her
Thru the night with no light from a-bove
From the Black Sites, on to Gitmo
To the cells of Abu Ghraib!
God less A-mer-i-ca ! My home now depraved
DD @ 148
Absolutely and well said! The Virginia race is crucial in our attempt to alter course not only in Iraq, but also in America.
Lotus,
Remember this gem from the skinny hatemonger with a law degree…Ann what’s her name.
C-hole-ter: I think it’s unquestionable that Republicans are more likely to prevent the next attack. However, I will grant that John Kerry will improve the economy in the emergency services and body bag industry.

Nate – the Doolittle ad is very good. short, repeated, shocking message.
Nate @ 102
Because of your zeal I am inspired to give a donation to Charlie Brown. Should cover the next 2-3 ads :)
Nate @

Nate, this is an excellent point.
Imagine how it feels to the MSM and corrupt political folks: all of the old shit that used to work so well and was so easy to use is now being called Bullshit within minutes of its occurance.
I’ll bet SR Sidarth was not the first to be called Macaca. In fact I’ll bet Felix used it all the time. If he tries to use it again, he’ll be the feature film on YouTube within minutes.
One story at a time. And hey, we LOVE calling bullshit on bullshit. What a fun game!
One story at a time.
What, am I the only Liebertroll left around here?
Oh well I’ll do the best I can.
What do the reality based facts in this post really prove? They prove that those who say Dubya hasn’t asked for sacrifices for his ‘Woe On Terra’ are wrong.
He asked Joe to sacrifice his constitutes interests, and the U.S.Constitution and Joe stepped right up and done ‘er.I won’t even bring up anything about women’s rights, health care or any of that other stuff because I don’t want to beat you all down too much. Suffice it to say Joe believes in shared sacrifice.
O.K. maybe not quite so much for himself
LOL Clothodi! Nicely done.
Redshift @ 82
This is priceless! Never mind that Republicans and the Armed Forces are leading the charge against Bush’s military commissions bill. Since when are skepticism about bullshit and concern about Star Chamber standards of justice “oppositional”?
:ast week’s Rose Garden presser was a breeze for Bush. The reporters seemed clueless. None seemed to know the first difference between Common Article 3 and the “shocks the conscience” standard, never mind all the other jokers in Bush’s deck. The public hasn’t the vaguest idea what Bush is up to. The press has fallen down on the job yet again.
I’ll bet he at least gets a street in Tel Aviv named after him!
What did he get for it?
He got some of the most hateful, angry-seeming people in the world to say that he was a pretty decent guy.
I bet Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter give him some measure of grudging respect.
If Rush and Ann were moral people, this might mean something. I mean, when you win the respect of people of principle, it does mean something. But what kind of principle do people have when they’re not vociferously condemning a President who has ordered torture?
You know what he is? Look up Maurice Maeterlink’s quote about the inquisition. Lieberman is the man who is pounding the pulpit and saying that we must not burn too many heretics. Some, sure, but not too many.
(Note to the illiterate rightwingers about to seize on that statement: look up the word “metaphor”. Then come ask some questions; I’ll try to help.)
