After a week like this, how can any American lump all politicians and both parties into the "they’re all corrupt" bin? Let me just do a quick round-up of what the morally bankrupt party that controls the executive and legislative branches of our government has been up to lately. This is merely what has caught my attention, mind you, so feel free to keep the round-up going in the comments section.
We started out the week with the right-wing take-over of not only ABC, but of our nation’s collective memory of the September 11th attacks, with Disney/ABC’s "Path to 9/11." The project’s right-wing roots were exposed as being part of David Horowitz’s 2-year PR campaign to blame Bill Clinton for 9/11, and this propagandistic pic was sublimely timed to coincide with the Bush adminstration’s airwaves onslaught this week to drive fear and confusion into the hearts of all Americans just weeks before the mid-term elections. Has any president ever gotten so much airtime in one week before?
From Michigan came the news that the College Republicans on the campus of the University of Michigan were planning to recruit some young souls with activities like "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day" and "Fun with Guns." Now, the first one is racist and reprehensible enough, but "Fun with Guns" would have involved students taking aim at cardboard cutouts of Democratic leaders with BB guns. When DNC chair Howard Dean wrote to RNC chair Ken Mehlman this week about how disgusting these activities were, Mehlman tried to distance the RNC from the planned events in Michigan. But, the fact remains that GOP and RNC funds flow to College Republican programs around the country, and such events have been been carried out on other campuses. As the copy on the College Republican National Committee web site reads:
As the grassroots arm of the GOP, the College Republican National Committee organizes the votes, volunteers, and media that win close contests all across the country.
Way to organize, GOP! Racism and assasination training!
Yesterday we learned that a report first commissioned by the FCC while under the leadership of Republican Michael Powell, was later buried because it found that media consolidation has had a negative impact on local news. Can’t let THAT get out! No surprise that Powell, now a private consultant, is today denying that he had anything to do with the report, but that’s a common Republican trick. Deny you had anything to do with reports or facts, should they come to light. Report? What report?
Then, there’s my favorite rhyme of the week: Ney, Delay and a Street Named K. Republican Congressman Bob Ney agreed today to plead guilty to federal criminal charges that he made false statements and conspired to commit fraud and violate federal lobbying laws. From CBS Marketwatch:
Ney, an Ohio Republican, became the first lawmaker to admit wrongdoing in the investigation surrounding the activities of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the Associated Press reported. Ney faces up to 10 years in prison, but the Justice Department said prosecutors will recommend that he serve 27 months, the report said. Ney signed the plea agreement Wednesday, but it was not approved by the Justice Department or filed with the U.S. court until Friday.
Republicans and the media have tried to make the Delay-Abramoff scandal into a bi-partisan smear of both parties, but look around, America. Those being indicted are only Republicans.
And because Republicans can never get enough of cloaking their activities in secrets and lies, they have also been busy this week whipping up a new front group, called the Economic Freedom Fund. The folks at the Patriot Project are reporting:
Yesterday in her Patriot Project post Robert J. Perry is Back, Taylor Marsh wrote about Robert J. Perry plunking down $5 million (!) just to fund the Economic Freedom Fund (EFF). Perry – who has close ties to Karl Rove and Tom DeLay – was a prime funder of the notorious Swift Boat Vets for Freedom – the smear front-group that made claims including that John Kerry shot himself to get his medals – and now this one person is providing $5 million in funding for a national front group that is attempting to have an influence on the control of the Congress in this election.
Fear and confusion is the Republican way. Forget about actually trying to solve problems or to show support for American citizens. The Republican-controlled Congress voted yesterday to deny aid to sick 9/11 responders.
Yesterday, Republican Senators blocked Senator Clinton’s proposal to fund almost 2 billion for medical treatment for sick 9/11 responders. As reported in NYC’s Daily News:
Senate leaders invoked parliamentary rules, saying Sen. Hillary Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) amendment to a measure funding port security was not "germane." – NY Daily News
Is there no end to the moral bankruptcy of Republicans? Their failed policies have led to an immoral war and thousands of lost lives. Waste and destruction, fear and confusion. Today we learn that because of the mess Bush started in Iraq, trenches will now be dug around Baghdad to "increase security."
What’s next, Republicans? A moat around DC?

Update: Senator Barbara Boxer is calling for an investigation into the buried FCC report mentioned above. Learn more from Free Press. You can see video of Boxer on Youtube.

Jennifer, we are eager to see Marcy’s new book and happy to help with research and editing.
A toast to FDL Publishing!
We are planning on tattooing the Michigan college Republicans with “Rudy Sucks” signs and then dumping them in South Bend this weekend.
twisted: my father went to OSU and was in the Navy. We were taught from birth to say “beat Michigan” and “beat Army.”
Secretary Webb was amused to learn of the latter.
In fact I almost went to A squared twice, and have a cousin who is a prof there. So all is forgiven…almost.
I just can’t get enough of Bush v Gregory during this morning’s Pissy Presser.
Petulant Pissy Boy Bush, lamely and loudly playing the fear card at a kindergarten level.

A friend of mine who should know better once remarked that the Democrats weren’t that much different from the Republicans. So I pointed out the difference for him. “One is a political party,” I told him. “The other is a criminal conspiracy.”
It really is as simple as that.
Not being from Michigan, I actually disliked the Irish more than the Buckeyes. At least until I got in a bar fight in Columbus during M-OSU weekend my senior year. Was up in A Squared last weekend, it is still an awesome place.
Bobby is it up on Youtube yet?

I used to see the same derision and condescension from Bobby Knight. And the same slavish cult-like devotion from his minions. A bully who eventually fell on his ass. Let’s hope.
Hello BobbyG. Nice to see you again.
Thanks to those in the last thread who pointed me to the David Gregory thrashing. Shhhhh, Big Daddy’s going to need a quiet house tonight.

It’s not enough. I want him slurring, cursing, and losing his temper. Perhaps with a big white rock stuck in his nose, a la Neil in The Last Waltz. Live on tv.

Thanks for mentioning the mess here in Michigan, Jennifer.
A lot of people still have the impression this is a blue state; it’s not, having shifted purple and in some areas like Grand Rapids, brilliant red since the Reagan years.
And they’re nasty. NASTY. And brutishly stupid.
Think Pete Hoekstra. Thaddeus McCotter. Mike Rogers.
Far too many of the elected Repug reps also took monies from DeLay-Abramoff — which is really rather odd since we are one heckuva long way from Texas.
The incidents give an indication of the kind of Repugs we will be dealing with inside 5 to 10 years. Nastier than their predecessors, don’t you think?
um…er…but what is Sancerre?

So, Bush is gonna decide how to interprete Article 3 of Geneva, ‘eh? That it will henceforth be defined as set forth in American law (in a manner that absolves us of any liability for torture).

Thanks very much, Jen. I was just looking for the vid. Have to keep our eyes on Babs.
Michigan was not the only one to plan a “Catch an illegal immigrant day” – College Republicans at Penn State and University of North Texas, and elsewhere did as well. This was not just one small club of racists doing something on their own. This was an organized national effort.
twolf1 — thanks for that YouTube link.
I think. I’m so damned HOT right now I could whip this laptop across the room.
What a nasty, NASTY, intensely stupid and arrogant man is George Bush.
RUDE. I want to slap him into next week for his ill-mannered snottiness. The media is supposed to be neutral, yet he gives them every damned reason not to be. Ditto the American public.
And ditto for every American service person, active or otherwise, and their families. I cannot imagine how active duty folks and families must feel after watching Bush spew like he did, with an abject lack of compassion for what could happen to troops captured by hostiles…
What an utter and complete embarrassment he is; 2008 cannot get here fast enough.
Jesus’ General has pics up of the nasty jr minions from Michigan and their”fight club”.Words truly fail me.In order to be that rotten so young you have to be spoonfed the nastiness from a young age.

Sancerre is a region in the Loire valley. Noted for a semi-dry, fresh, fruity white with vegetable flavors from Sauvignon Blanc grapes and a light and fruity red from Pinot Noir.
If you want a really good white may I suggest a Chablis Premier Cru from Burgundy. Dry, gravelly with chalky overtones from the flinty limestone soil they are light, crisp, fruity, and floral. with a steely edge and controlled but delightful fruit, no oak, Chardonnay grapes.
If you go with a red from Pinot Noir grapes to me the only choice is a Cote d’Or Burgundy. There are so many great ones pointless to list them. Unless you want me to.

I really don’t think he’s going to make it that far. His back is clearly against the wall, hence all the hissing and flapping like a goose.
Off to the farmer’s market with the kids, need some veggies for the weekend (zuchini gratin? or maybe some acorn squash gnocchi? hmm…) and some apples (mmm…apple crisp!).
Maybe I’ll swing by the wine shoppe, too, all this talk of white wines has made me thirsty. How about a nice Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc? or maybe I’ll just help the Aussies with their over-abundance of wine, drink some unoaked chardonnay from Oz.

I liked Imman’s concept for a commercial below threads too.
Hugh- re: Ford. Interestingly, when one of the channels did a cutaway from the Bush press conf (apparently they said they would go back to it if anything important came up?) it was soon after Bushwas talking about how he’s made the economy great and people will be voting Republican bc the economy is great and they don’t want Halliburton to have to pay taxes yada yada
Apparently the immediate “cut to” story as they came back was the Ford layoffs.

Anyways, while we all believe the Pres. is losing it, his base is eating this shit up. They don’t care what he actually says, or how wrong he is, just so long as he’s “resolute and firm.” His poll #’s continue to inch upward as do his #’s on fighting terrorism. Where the fuck are the Dems? His ugly mug is going to be a staple on the tube for the next 53 days, which Dem is going to step forward and counter each and every bogus talking point with a valid one? I saw Pelosi on Cspan yesterday and she ain’t cutting it. Neither my wife nor I were impressed with her answers or her demeanor. This is serious, and everyday this week I see the GOP winning the PR battle. We need Russ or someone to step it up and cut through the idiocy of not only our current leadership but the idiots who buy into the fear fear fear. I seriously need to step away for awhile. /rant off.
Twisted Martini @ 66
Yeah – well, let’s try this one. Mr. President, if “degrading and humiliating” is so vague – would you like to define just who is an “enemy combatant” under your legislation? An American citizen who contributes to a Muslim charity? A 12 yo Lebanese child, if their parent is a member of Hizbollah? Someone who agrees with Al-Qaeda that American is “the great Satan” and has had dinner with OBL, but has never participated in any terrorism act or planning?
Someone who contributes to Quakers and PETA?
We gotcher VAGUE.
And Mr. President, what is it about waterboarding that makes you feel it is not torture? COuld you demonstrate?
And Mr. President, is “hostage” a vague term as well and can you discuss family members, including children, that you have authorized be held?
And Mr. President – what if you do all these things to someone who it turns out was just a German citizen who had a name that “sounds like” a terrorists name? Is it still “legal” to use all those techniques on a kidnapped foreign national who has nothing to do with terrorism?
Mr. President – are you now saying that stripping civilians and stacking them in pyramids isn’t humiliating and degrading?
Mr. President – how is your inabiity to understand degradation and humiliation of Arab and Muslim detainees going to be winning you hearts & minds?
Then there is the biggie.
Mr. President, if some of our “professionals” might be deemed to have committed war crimes UNLESS the Geneva Conventions are disregarded — who is RESPONSIBLE.
Does Halliburton have the contract for the moats?

Raw Story: Fox, CNN cover Cuba’s Bush ‘vampire’ billboards: Developing…
You can see the MSM trying to stop the republican bleeding in so many big ways – but also in a million smarmy little ways.
For instance: CNN earlier did a piece on Bob Ney and his guilty plea – they talked about his ties to Abramoff, his crimes, his probable sentence, his apology, all kinds of stuff – except for one thing – they never mentioned that he is A REPUBLICAN!
Just one more thing the MSM is CONSCIOUSLY doing to make it look like it’s a BIPARTISAN SCANDAL – which is always good for rethugs.

It does seem like the Democrats strategy to let the thugs defeat themselves is in full effect. The bad thing is that if we win, they’ll think it is a winning strategy.
Now they could be pushing back on a local basis & I’m just not aware of it. Nationally, their strategy blows.

My favorite bumper sticker, ergo, is “Impeach Cheney First.”
But I agree with TRex on this. There is no way to get around that this Administration has been have been operating illegally on a whole lot of fronts and once hearings begin next February that a lot of shit will hit the fan. The Congressional elections are all about W and he knows it.
Mary made a grat point above re: the illegality versus international law of violating the Geneva conventions no matter what the congress does remedially with our laws.
Gregory’s very simple and specific question to W was regarding the ability of accused to confront their accuser and Chimp answered clearly that he hopes others adopt the same policy that he is proposing. He should be suspended by genitalia for that alone!

OT:
I would like to address some issues that have manifested themselves over the blogger meeting with Bill Clinton.
Aside from the fact that the Clinton organization appeared to be the final ‘decider’ on who was invited to what, in Peter Daou’s words was the first in a series of meetings, and that many individuals who were invited to attend could or would not for personal reasons tends to show as exaggerated the assertion that the choices made regarding invitees were racially motivated.
Rather, it appeared to be a question of who was available, and when.
While in future we as human beings might do well to think in more inclusionary terms for such meetings, the assertion of race as a factor appears unfounded to me.
Much criticism, too is levied at FDL…That we are too snarky, cliquish, and quick to stifle dissent from either end of the ideological spectrum ruthlessly.
Aside from the fact that the owners of this blog are under no obligation to please anyone but themselves in matters of content, in my time at FDL the only voices that I have seen stilled were obvious trolls looking to insult or muddify, and those who come with sharpened personal agendas and expect that the big ol’ blogomegaphone will fall into lockstep for the newest prettiest star, then get ne plus unplussed when it doesn’t.
I have had material ‘passed on’ here at FDL, and bear no ill will whatsoever as it is Jane and Christy’s soapbox…Not mine.
Such people treat us and other interactive media as a commodity that exists solely to propagate their viewpoint for free, and when it doesn’t, they immediately hop onto the ad hominem express. They belittle their own contribution by such actions.
Conversely, I have seen other commenters here be treated somewhat brutally, yet continue forward and become valued contributors.
Of the two, I value the latter’s opinion more, because the quality of perserverance is a rare one indeed.
A related issue: Over the last 6 weeks there is not much that another can relate to me regarding ill-founded artistic criticism.
A work of mine was roundly vilified in some quarters, left and right, and in spite of what I feel is a clear explanation of the work’s genesis and intent (and an unqualified apology to any who might have been offended) continues to be so treated.
While I might have my suspicions regarding individual underlying motivation, there is no guarantee of satisfactory proof to be had, and in the end I am not doing this to be ‘popular’, but to provoke thought and discussion.
Therefore, I, too am under no obligation to please anyone, save myself.
I have gone over many blogosperic posts and external commentary where the underlying theme consisted of false dichotomies, some (pardon the obvious strawman) saying they would never meet with power on such terms, preferring to have their flight to the event and lodgings paid for by the inviter so that they may hector and chivvy in relative comfort.
Others would prefer to narrow the agenda down as much as possible so that their litany of complaint alone might be heard, and insist that others join them in this tight focus or be deemed sellouts and traitors.
In my opinion these stances are unhelpful.
In closing, I come from an era where to meet even a former nation’s leader was a great honor.
I realize that the Bush administration has dimmed that lustre somewhat in the public’s eye, but there is a greater point to be made.
And that is:
I may not agree with you, nor you with me…And we may both agree or disagree with others.
But it is my perception that we are all in solidarity when it comes to a fight against tyranny and mendacity.
And unless we band together in spite of our genuine differences and grievances, forcing the tide to turn, we will surely enter a darkness from which there is no escape.
Thank you for your patience in reading this, if you have done so.
So sorry. Had to feed the kiddies.
Open bar, kids. Help yourself. A dry Manhattan coming up, though. Twist of lemon?
All the fundies will be held at bay because their tight asses would be loosed by the alcohol in the martini moat and they would fill up and sink to the bottom.
Sally @ 83
LOL – and it’s no bid, of course. After all, Halliburton is the only company in the world with the expertise and track record that good moat building requires.
Whoa. Glass of champers for darkblack!
Get Dark Black a Guinness. Brilliant!
Thank you for your patience in reading this, if you have done so.
Every magnificent word!
BRAVO!
New thread, my lambs!
Right on DarkBlack!!!

Errrr, ummm, seems to me that the only person who misunderestimatestands Geneva’s Article III is Dubya.
Selah, darkblack. There it is.
Just watched Sen. Byrd, Judge Posner, and Yoo on c-span. In a meeting on illegal surveillance Senator Byrd’s flying solo in defense of civil liberties. Posner is alarming in how he believes warrants through a judge is not necessary for intel surveillance. Yoo, well, he’s condescending and arrogant. He has a vocabulary and knows how many tools of government work. He actually broke in to a lecture about the riff between FBI and other agencies in a stupid Tucker Carlson demeanor. I thought a Senator would shut him up. He actually believes his own bullshit.(imagine) He’s a torture kind of guy. He really doesn’t have limitations. One other fellow discussing differences in British and US systems says The British pretty much do it all in terms of intel gathering unrestricted.
Bottom line not a lot of need for warrants, no worries now, move along.
In another meeting I caught just a couple of minutes of Senator Pryor and Barbara Boxer in discussion with an FCC guy on Net Neutrality. Pryor is ready to wave his hand and approve division of the net into three or (what the heck) four separate bandwidths for commerce and god knows what out of the internet today. The FCC guy tells Boxer it wouldn’t be any problem for them and they aren’t worried about it today. Senator Boxer fortunately stands up for the net quite well, but, she was flying solo.
Byrd and Boxer on friday afternoon are great warriors for freedom in this time of what should be called a multide of constitutional crisis. I think they need some help.
Love you, darkblack. Thank you for saying how you feel.
darkblack– wonderfully expressed in its entirety.
DarkBlack, you know I think you rock. Excellent points, all.
darkblack @ 122:
Great post. I really appreciate the clarity, quality, sincerity, and maturity of the thoughts you’ve expressed in this comment.
Peace.
I read you too darkblack. And let me say, your riff the other day on Mr Rushmore was brilliant and creepy – a visual sock in the gut.

should read:
the fact that we’re repeating our past failures should be prominently featured

So what you’re sayin is ;ya got your Gambino Republicans and your Torquemada Republicans?
darkblack – well said. Thank you.
hello. or should i say, good morning (that’s what it is here).
this is a nice post, and timely as well. i was just the other day trying to describe the “won’t get fooled again” episode to one of my australian friends. i just showed him this video. thanks.
other topics in this thread…
bobby knight: i have to admit, having grown up in the hoosier state, that i was once a fan. i even went to the bobby knight basketball camp one summer. his is just a classic case of ‘jock hubris’, unfortunately — the idea that some held that because of his accomplishments, he could do no wrong. but guess what? he did wrong. it’s sad because it overshadowed anything right he did, like defying the jockocracy of sports and demanding that his players — student-athletes that they were — complete their studies and graduate. this was before the ncaa had anywhere near the academic rules they have today. but ultimately he thought he had that sort of athletic indemnity that many americans still want to heap on participants of what are otherwise meaningless sporting events.
i think the most pathetic bit about knight’s case is that he just never got it: he thought he was the victim. incidentally, he may have ended up in texas, but he started at army.
and “president cheney”: maybe someone else has already said it, but — that would change things, how? as far as i can tell, he gets to do everything like a president without having to answer for it. at least if bush was gone, he’d be clearly in the spotlight, and i think it would make A LOT more people uncomfortable.
but just my 2 cents (which in australia is impossible since we don’t have any denomination lower than 5 cents here)!
also, nice thoughts, darkblack, and i also enjoyed the ‘mount rushtowar’ graphic.

i would think it would be more accurate to say “the fact that they’re repeating their past failures at our expense and to the detriment of our troops…“
I guess if we don’t let the President protect us the way he wants, he’ll release the anthrax again, and we’ll be soooooo sooorrrrry.
Re: fun with guns I wonder why repubs settled with Hillary & Kerry cardboard targets, instead of going even lower with the obvious “JFK in Lincoln” print. I think they just forgot – if some of the readers is in contact with them, please remind them of this possibility to alienate even more moderates.
darkblack: your work so well matched with the words is what kept me coming back here.
After a week like this, how can any American lump all politicians and both parties into the “they’re all corrupt” bin?
Totally EPU’d, but I just got home.
Because you’re talking about life-long Republicans, who not only don’t know, they don’t want to know. It’s more than a family tradition – it’s a familial obligation. Just make sure that daddy’s tax dollars aren’tgoing to black single mothers – make sure that the homo’s aren’t allowed to be real citizens (which is a bit newer) – keep voting for those who claim to know Jesus – and the world will be fine.
And the first person to figure out how to dynamite their way into that mind-set – will obviously be our hero, eh?
It’s good to know that some things never change.
Fourty-five years ago, Young Repbublicans used to amuse themselves at their meetings by throwing darts at pictures of Adlai Stevenson and Eleanor Roosevelt. I recall that their homecoming float called for a preemptive nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. Classy bunch.
Satire or reality?
Bush Drafts Amendment for Etch-A-Sketch Constitution
I have just one question. Why wasn’t that John Kerry’s ad?
Darkblack, bravo and thanks for your contributions of all sorts to this blog.
Q Thank you, Mr. President. Mr. President, former Secretary of State Colin Powell says the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism. If a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State feels this way, don’t you think that Americans and the rest of the world are beginning to wonder whether you’re following a flawed strategy?
THE PRESIDENT: If there’s any comparison between the compassion and decency of the American people and the terrorist tactics of spinach, it’s flawed logic. I simply can’t accept that. It’s unacceptable to think that there’s any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United States of America and the action of leafy greens who kill innocent women and children to achieve an objective, Terry.
My job, and the job of people here in Washington, D.C., is to protect this country. We didn’t ask for this spinach. You might remember the 2000 campaign. I don’t remember spending much time talking about what it might be like to be a Commander-in-Chief in a different kind of war. But this spinach has struck us and they want to strike us again. And we will give our folks the tools necessary to protect the country; that’s our job.
It’s a dangerous world. I wish it wasn’t that way. I wish I could tell the American people, don’t worry about it, they’re not coming again. But spinach is coming again. And that’s why I’ve sent this legislation up to Congress, and that’s why we’ll continue to work with allies in building a vast coalition, to protect not only ourselves, but them. The facts are, is that after 9/11, spinach continued to attack and kill innocent people.
I happen to believe that they’re bound by a common ideology. Matter of fact, I don’t believe that, I know they are. And they want to impose that ideology throughout the broader Middle East. That’s what they have said. It makes sense for the Commander-in-Chief, and all of us involved in protecting this country to listen to the words of the spinach. And I take their words seriously. And that’s what’s going to be necessary to protect this country, is to listen carefully to what they say and stay ahead of them as they try to attack us.
Darkblack, don’t back down one step. Your mordant eye and strong voice are needed in this tangled and corrupt world. Kudos to you. Keep on keeping on, cyberfriend!

God, they need some help… Where are the real Democrats? I’m so sick of the silence. And do we have no one at the helm? It is no wonder W gets the air time. Who is running the PARTY?
we seem unable to have coherent voices that speak loudly. Where the fuck are they? 133
Russ Feingold shouldn’t be expected to do everything.
Russ Feingold is the sine qua non Democrat. Add Harold Ford, Jon Tester and Ned Lamont to the Senate and you will see a change for the better in this country.
“Then there is the biggie.
Mr. President, if some of our “professionals” might be deemed to have committed war crimes UNLESS the Geneva Conventions are disregarded — who is RESPONSIBLE.”
One of my favorite recurring daydreams involves how large the armies of Secret Servicemen will have to be to protect Dubya and Darth when they are no longer in office. Or the number of mercenaries hired by Haliburton. Armed and ready plainclothesmen stretching into the horizon.
You realize, of course, they can NEVER leave the country again. Not without a battalion surrounding and protecting them. Their lives were forfeit the day we invaded Iraq. When Bush comments on how 9/11 changed OUR lives – their life change became far more significant after the Iraq Invasion. Nobody forgets Crimes Against the World!
