This whole experience with "Have You Had Enough?" has been an incredible grassroots political adventure for me. I love everything about it– especially the teamwork. I’ve always reveled in the team spirit; it’s so all-American.
This one started very organically when Firedoglake community member Tummy Yum, who I had never met or spoken to, showed up in June at a Saturday afternoon live blog session we were doing for fellow Tarheel Larry Kissell. Tommy, like so many FDL members, contributed some money for Kissell at our ActBlue Page and since he was one of the first 30 to do so that day, he won an Eric Clapton CD. When he got it in the mail he wrote back and thanked me and introduced himself and said he wanted to do more to help clean up the horrible mess Bush has made of our country. This led to a flurry of e-mails and, not long after, the song, based on an old Squirrel Nut Zippers song, "Put A Lid On It," that Tommy had written when he was in that band, was recorded by Tommy, his old amigo from SNZs, Ken Mosher, and Rickie Lee Jones. All the musicians and producers and engineers were totally cooperative and no one thought of anything except for doing a great job– and stopping the Bush Regime while there’s still time.
Even the studio time was donated! Irwing, a 17 year old who got inspired by Robert Greenwald’s new film, Iraq For Sale, ran home right after seeing a screening of the movie and put up a MySpace page for the song. And then Firedoglake, Crooks and Liars and Down With Tyranny community members started getting involved. Christine, one of the most accomplished publicists in the whole country volunteered to do the press; what a relief to not have to explain anything to the person who will be representing the project to the media! And then Jane warned me what a nightmare it could be figuring out which radio stations were most appropriate in each market in, as if by magic, a few hours later, Jacquie e-mailed me and offered to help, being a former media buyer, with the spot placement!
Yesterday, for the first time, I spoke with Mike McIntee, the genius behind the animated clips for the song. Mike is a supporter of Coleen Rowley and he loved the song and put together the clip in his spare time! After people saw the Coleen clip, they started asking Mike to do ‘em for other Blue America candidates. Yesterday, John debuted "Time To Throw Pombo Out," the first of the 60-second customized videos to be ready. Starting today we’re rolling out clips for several of the Blue America candidates.
Last Saturday, everyone was so impressed with Roger Sharpe that we turned around a customized clip for North Carolina bloggers today. Firedoglake world premiere:
Meanwhile, Star A. Decise over at the main blog in Connecticut’s 5th congressional district, Enigmatic Paradox, has started his own fund-raising efforts to get "Time To Throw Nancy Johnson Out" on the local radio stations. And our pals at Say No To Pombo revved up a new Say No To Pombo My Space page to host the song for CA-11 voters.
People keep coming up with ideas and proposals and it’s just absolutely amazing to me. I mean yesterday I saw that student supporters of Roger Sharpe at West Stokes High School put the song up at their school’s Young Democrats website.
Air America hosts have been playing the song and even music djs at stations around the country who understand the importance of throwing the rascals out have started playing it where they can. Then today I was informed that the music was one of the top 10 most podcasted songs in the country. And the big guns don’t hit until today when iTunes and all of the other commercial download services start offering "Have You Had Enough?" for free (as eMusic already started doing last week).
As I write this just over $5,000, between ActBlue and our Blue America post office box, has been collected to get our customized 60-second spots on the air. Our good friends at MoveOn tell me it takes around $20,000 to "move numbers." I know we’re not going to have enough money to put into every worthy raise of the Blue America candidates– and we won’t make a final decision for a few weeks, when we can access if any of the races are close enough that a little help might push them over the finish-line. But we want to get some imput from community members about which candidates you’ve met at our chats seem most deserving. I’d also like to ask anyone who can afford to, to please consider putting some money into the Blue America PAC at the ActBlue Page. The PAC is used 100% for putting the song on the air and whatever gets collected there doesn’t go to any candidates, just to the radio stations. Anyone who doesn’t use Blue America, can send a check to Blue America PAC. P.O. Box 27201, L.A., CA 90027.
And, oh by the way, Green Day is getting the Spirit of Liberty Award from People For the American Way at a dinner/party in L.A. on October 10– just about a month from now. Green Day is one of my favorite bands in the world and I can’t wait to go. And what makes it even more exciting is that Ambassador Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame will be speaking. What a party! You want to go? I have an extra pair of tickets– one for you and one for whomever you want to bring with you. And so easy to win ‘em! Just lend a help out at the Blue America PAC today– this is a one day offer which ends at 12 midnight Pacific Time. Right after midnight I’m going to put all the names of all today’s donors in a brown paper bag and when I see Jane in a couple of days I’m going to ask her to pick one name at random. We’ll announce the winner here at FDL. Oh, and if you know any Green Day fans… can you let them know too?

rocksswings, Tommy Yumrocksswings!McInerny, Rowley, Sharpe, Tester and Kissell, too
And the whole FDL community swings!!!
awesome!
It took me a second to figure that out
Fan-fuckin-abulous!
Go Sharpe! Go netroots! Go America!
The Sharpe folks are pretty excited and I saw a note they sent to local bloggers suggesting they use the video
Wow! That’s fantastic.
I meant to type fan-fuckin-tastic, but I was so excited by that ad that I conflated my adjectives!
Stuff like this has been happening all day. I can’t even keep track any longer.
I wear my “Lamonster” pin as a badge of honor. Sorry if you found that it offended your sensibilities.
Any word on RI yet?
That’s McCafferty’s question on CNN’s Situtation Room. And he explained the whole thing, in as much disgust as he could muster, and just couldn’t stop. I think the man has . . .
Had enough.
A friend of mine in RI (ex-bass player of the Red Rockers) told me turn out is heavy; probably bad for Laffey
Genius, I tell you! Sheer genius!
Howie Klein @ 6
Excellent!!!!
Howie Klein @ 12
Sis-in-law says the same. Can only mean independents are voting.
OT but this is funny. In the comments to this NY Times article”
Anyone hear anything about John Hall’s primary in NY-19? If he wins, he’s our guest here tomorrow
Wow, Howie, you said you had good news, but…jesus!
The song has been put into rotation on two stations I know of as well.
Howie Klein @ 17
Way too early to know. Polls are still open in many places in NY.
Hey Tommy! Thanks for doing all those spots today! A lot of stations are playing it in districts where there are no Blue America candidates. It’s getting HUGE airplay in New Mexico, for instance, but… the DCCC should run spots there.
I’m really eager to start getting a sense of the community for which candidates we ought to go after with radio spots. I doubt we’ll be able to do more than 3 or 4.
This is interesting: David Sirota is joining the Lamont campaign to handle Lieberliar spin.
Sirota’s book, HOSTILE TAKEOVER, was my favorite book this year. the guy has his head screwed on right.
Yay, us!
We Swing!
Go FDL, C&L, DWT!
Howie is a GOD.
Howie,
Is there a version for Kissell? NC-08 needs to go blue this year.
Howie Klein @ 20
I think with today’s work that makes about 30 “tailored” spots. Luckily, I love my job!
What is easy to overlook here is that there’s a brand-new paradigm being invented about how to organize and advocate, in which regional players utilize national resourses. No more of this centralized, top-down bullshit.
More fun in Lieberland!
Howie Klein @ 21
What are the criteria, Howie? I mean, we don’t want to throw good money after bad if our guy is either a shoo-in or too much of a dark horse.
Daryl (#25)- Kissell was actually the inspiration for the whole thing! We’ll have a video for him soon
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!
The song, the characters, the message-I love it!
I want eric Massa to use it!
Beautiful
I have got to buy Mr Yum a drink. If he will just get out from behind his open bar. *g*
Eureka Springs, AR @ 31
A glass of champers would be lovely, thanks! Just let me put on my cravat.
tommy yum @ 28
I agree. We ought to direct the money to districts where we can make a difference. Jacqrat has been doing preliminary work with stations all over the country so when we’re ready to pull the trigger, everything will be in place. She had some major good luck in NW Connecticut this morning.
Howie Klein @ 33
Yay Jacqrat!!!!
Ruffian (#30)- We’re doing one for Massa for sure
Howie Klein @ 9
That is awesome, Howie. I’ve been thinking about your idea for radio spots…you know right here in Columbus you could help Mary Jo Kilroy in Oh-15, and Sherrod Brown for Senator, and Ted Strickland for Governor, all with the same spot.
Howie,
How ’bout you get the ball rolling and tell us who you think needs the radio buys.
Also, I should get in touch with the Sharpe people. Bet Kenny and I could play a show for ‘em or something.
Howie — You just solved a mystery! A couple months back, about the time of my birthday, I got two similar packages, both with CDs enclosed. One was from my son — a gift CD. The other also contained a CD, but I lost the package, which I didn’t look at that closely, and didn’t see any note inside. Who sent this?
I have e-mailed everyone who every knew me, most of whom would never think of sending me anything for my birthday. The typical response: “you’re kidding!” No one knew anything about this.
Thanks for remembering my birthday. Very thoughtful, and thanks for the CD.
Oh, and I sent a contribution to help the cause. Good luck.
I gotta go put the little guy to bed.
Thanks, Howie, for all you do, and your boundless enthusiasm.
Thank you, FDL community, for giving me hope and an opportunity to learn and contribute.
Bless you all.
ifthethunderdontgetya (#36)- Well, not really Ted, because there’s no rascal to throw out (open seat). But Mary Jo and Sherrod are great candidates. Big cities like Columbus (not to mention whole states like Ohio) are VERY expensive. Unless we start taking in some bigger bucks at the PAC, we’re going to have to stick to rural districts where radio is relatively cheap.
tommy yum @ 39
Thank you, Tommy!
Howie—another great post.
Darcy Burner’s (WA-08) first campaign ad drew some, IMO appropriate, fire from FDL. One of her supporters must have been reading when Jane raised the issue. Now…if she’d just link to this little ditty on her own site.
Howie Klein @ 40
I hear you about the expense. However, as far as the open seat goes, the entire Ohio GOoP apparatus is a rascal that needs throwing out, and Ken Blackwell is an egregious example.
I thought “just say Noe to Ney” would be a great campaign slogan, but the corrupt bass turd already folded his tent.
Howie, here is a picture I took of Robin Hayes’ family textile mill with a lock on the gate right before the smokestacks came down. It’s well-known in the district. If you need images for a spot for Larry I’m happy to help. I already have a bunch and you’re welcome to them. Fieldcrest/Cannon/Pillowtex
Re: West Stokes High School
OMG! That’s in King, NC
small world ; )
We gave her permission already. What happened? Darcy’s great
B. Muse/The Southern Dem @ 44
Would you make that offer directly to Mike who is putting the videos together and who is begging for that kind of help. His email is mmcintee@mac.com
You betcha Howie. I have so much stuff he can use. I’ll email him right now.
That’s mind-blowingly great, for people to be able to fall in to place like that.
My mom just moved back to North Carolina because my mentally ill grandmother lost her legal rights for- I kid not- crossing the street too slowly. She’s 82 and couldn’t make it all the way on green. But that was enough to call her a threat to herself and instutionalize her.So my mother had to move back to the state to take over my grandmother’s guardianship.
At any rate, she was raving the music and the people at Kissel’s Friday get-together.
And, frankly, I’m pretty grateful that his people were able to give some amount of pleasure to a woman who’s been pretty stressed out lately!
Howie–perhaps it just hasn’t made it to her site yet. I’ll ask her campaign staff.
sb2, I think the Kissell race is going to be one of our big victories
Great job, Howie and Tommy.
Where can I contribute?
I just changed my vacation schedule around so I can be in DC for a Blue America swearing in party in January. I hope a lot of doggies will be able to make it.
alittlemusicalityplease @ 52
Thanks for asking! right here!
Howie Klein @ 53
I would love to meet you Howie, and since I grew up in D.C. and can still stay at Mom and Dad’s place (unless I really piss them off somehow), there’s a pretty good chance.
By the way, for anyone who didn’t read the story too closely, Ambassador Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame will be the featured speakers at the Green Day Spirit of Liberty Award dinner. I’m going, Jane’s going, John Amato’s going. And someone who contributes to the PAC today is coming with us. It’s gonna be fun. (L.A., October 10)

OT
Tonight’s News Hour discussion of The Path to 9/11 included a memorable quote by one of the talking heads: “The disclaimer was so broad I could have put Mickey Mouse in the White House and gotten away with it.”
Priceless.
oddball, what about NY-19?
BTW…I have been humming this song to myself since I first heard it.
What a fantastic uplifting tune. Gets to the point without being nasty.
Hats off to all involved.
Thank you a thousand times!
Way to go Howie! Your whole Have You Had Enough? project is my favorite part of this election cycle.
I’m hoping we can figure out how to get one made for Mike Rogers (R-MI-8). I can’t wait until he is thrown out.
Has one been done yet with some pics and the lyrics where it is general and replaces ‘rascals’ with “Republicans”? That one alone could be a series with different graphics in each one, think one themed for Katrina for instance.
Howie – email is sent. This is wonderful. I wish I had the talent/skills to put this together myself, but I don’t. I plan to learn AFTER the election.
Shez (#61)- great idea! I wish I knew how to do animations
Howie….
This is as close as zI can find to the official site…

Any thoughts..
Anyone in or around Charlotte…You are invited to a blogger gathering this Thursday night. Short notice, I know. We just got the time confirmed yesterday. The guys from DKos who are filming the documentary “Crashing the States” will be in town to interview Kissell bloggers/commenters/online supporters. You can email me at betsyb at carolina dot rr dot com.
What about Mr Laesch ? Will he be using “Had Enough” against Hastert?
Gang, I just got an incredible e-mail from a musician who got a check from Disney for royalties for a soundtrack he worked on for one of their films. He immediately turned the check over to our PAC!!!! He just e-mailed me.
Yes ! Disney slap, step on Mickey’s tail. *g*
Eureka Springs, AR @ 66
Yeah, Laesch’s supporters on the local blogs got their videos today. Laesch was one of the first candidates to put the music on his official site. he loves the song and the project.
OT Your daily gas and oil prices
Average price for regular gasoline 9/12/06 in 50 states and DC
$3.00 plus 1 state
$2.90 plus 8 states
$2.80 plus 5 states
$2.70 plus 5 states
$2.60 plus 9 states
$2.50 plus 8 states
$2.40 plus 10 states
$2.30 plus 5 states
Average national price: $2.613, down $.011
Highest recorded national average price: $3.057 9/5/2005
Highest average price: Hawaii $3.278
Lowest average price: Ohio $2.309
Nymex Crude Future $63.71, down $1.90
Dated Brent Spot $62.36, down $1.85
WTI Cushing Spot $63.76, down $1.85
Gas continues its freefall. The Brent which is a world market bench price is pulling the US bench price (the West Texas Intermediate Cushing) down. The US markets seemed to want to hold at the $65 level but the world market forced them lower. The question is how low will oil go. I think the bottom would be the high $50s but a more likely scenario is fluctuation in the $60-65 range. The approach of cold weather and a cooling economy will have much to say about this, i.e. how cold and how cool?
WOO HOO!! Here in NM where KUNM is giving major rotation and has been for about a month, yes, we have Had Enough!!
Just so you know, KUNM is having a 40th birthday celebration, organizing events ie: Amy Goodman is coming on September 28. Maybe we can do something special with the song then? I have a little inside angle on that if Tommy Yum or Howie have any suggestions. . .
I don’t think Patricia Madrid is in the top tier of any Blue America, but we really have Had Enough of Heather Wilson, the cry me a Rio Grande baby.
I know Howie has at least one pal over at KUNM, so whaddya think?
What about our Colorado Duo? or Coleen Rowley?
What a great song. It’s not overbearing and preachy. It’s to the point and concise. Musically it’s great.
Howie Klein @ 54
OK I’m in, and hey everybody, the water’s FINE!
P.S. An oldie but goodie!
This song just thrills me every time I hear it, and I click on it nearly every time a link is posted. (Great news at 67!!) (And Tommy, You’re the best.)
And IfTha……oldie but goody fer shur!!
bg @ 71
I’d like to get the DCCC to do an ad buy to support the KUMN airplay in the market. But since they’re non-profit, what station makes sense. Which commercial station shares audience with KUNM? (We’re looking for stations with demos that are more than 50% females and over 30 years old)
Eureka Springs, AR @ 72
Personally, I LOVE the idea of helping Coleen.
grs @ 73
I like the hint of New Orleans jazz in it’s sound as well. subtle innuendo
THANKS HOWIE
i am so excited!!!
Re gas prices: I live in NY (rural) and go to school in Pa. Genrally diff in prices about .05- basically diff in taxes. Yesterday & today-Pa 2.59, NY 2.91 coming down to 2.89.
Very bizzare
I can try to find out, maybe the GM over at KUNM would have that info. I only listen to KUNM.
Look what someone just sent me. This has been spreading like wildfire today!
Howie – What candidate/markets combo make sense? Would our gentleman Bruce from Iowa be cost effective?
Bruce’s district might be cost-effective. Luckily for him– unlike almost all of our other candidates– he’s getting a HUGE ad buy from the DCCC. At least they’re helping a few worthy candidates.
I thought Iowa would be an excellent target.
Jerry McNerney ? What’s his current situation?
timewarp @

XOXO, Timewarp :)
SERIOUSLY, FOLKS! This is an EXCELLENT post to SPOTLIGHT to your local media – political editors, MUSIC reviewers (the Green Day ticket giveaway angle) and wherever else you brilliant, creative, lovely people can figure out!
PS: Donate to Blue America PAC HERE
Thank you!
Love this tune – heard it on the Thom Hartmann show today – not the first time there either.
Roger Sharpe’s campaign manager, Drew, just e-mailed me because he read Tommy’s offer to play a live show for the campaign. He wanted Tommy’s e-mail. I just sent it!
Eureka Springs, AR @ 78
I was wondering if that tune would be characterized as Dixieland jazz. What do you think, Howie?
Well, Howie, I can’t resist you! I tried to cut myself off till next month, but this is too good a cause.
Of course I want to put in the good word for Charlie Brown. His poll results are out today, finally. In case you didn’t see, with a 4.9 percent margin, it’s a dead heat at 39 percent for Charlie Brown and 41 percent for Doolittle.
But the exciting part is, after people are read positive facts about both candidates Charlie gets an 8 point lead! [I had been told it was a 9 point lead but looking at the actual poll, it looks like 8.]
Who would have thought?!! Anybody interested can see the poll here.
kewl!
Howie Klein @ 84
Sad to think how the Republican party could never have done what they have to America these last six years without the DLC mentality. Even if things go as well as we all hope this November, we’re going to have to keep holding their feet to the fire.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 86
McNerney is a great idea and we should watch that race carefully. I haven’t seen any recent polls but he was leading Pombo recently. Th environmental groups are spending HUGE in that district– over a million dollars I hear.
Charlie Brown is in a statistical deadheat with Doolittle, so that’s another CA race to watch– cheap media up there too.
Lindy – Thanks for the update! I have been really curious about that race.
Howie Klein @
67
That is wonderful. How amazingly great it must make that musician feel!
neurophius @ 90
Well sounds like Coleen and McNerny should be strong contenders.
I donate twice a week and couldn’t make it to LA if I won so will chip in again tomorrow afternoon.
Hastert botching the national anthem on countdown LOL what a jackass
Geeze, Howie, sounds like you need a full-time staff just to keep up with all the good will that is coming your way. Congratulations to you and of course to tommy, the consummate party host. People are hungry to join a good thing!
Howie -
I just happily made a contribution to McNearny. He’s not in my district but I am in Los Angeles and I love the guy…
p.s. I also LOVE green day so I’ve got my fingers crossed big time…
OT but American Airlines is considering pulling all their advertising off of ABC, as well as a possible libel suit:

I also love Wulsin and Jane’s blood boils when you mention Mean Jean around her, so that OH-02 race is a contender
twolf1 @ 98
Oh, say can you see, by the star spangled, err, ahh… LOL
FYI– we won’t spend any of our money on any Disney-owned radio stations

Teddy San Fran will be happy, I think he was one of the first to spotlight to them, re: the Mouse That Whored.
And speaking of great candidates– I have a wonderful one coming soon: Robert Rodriguez: under the radar but looking like he’s going to go an old rubber stamp fart the fight of his political career. And Robert’s in his 20’s but used to work for Boxer and Linda Sanchez and he ran CA’s voter registration drive.
I’d like to suggest a series of signs, similar to those seen on the 50’s highways for Burma Shave. Put them everywhere. I’d pay $100 for several bunches. We have to stop this shit soon.

Howie, this whole thing is genius! How wonderful that all these talented folks have volunteered their talents to come up with a great batch of catchy commercials.
You inpsired to do what little I can, so I’ll be stuffing envelopes for Vic Wulsin–down with Mean Jean!!
Howie Klein @ 113
..she has raised her profile in part with the help of Internet bloggers…
Donna rocks, that would be a nice House bookend to Ned Lamont in Ct.
“While President Bush and other Republican politicians spent the day exploiting the memory of those we lost five years ago, the nation overlooked a grim milestone: More Americans have now died in Iraq than died on 9/11. Iraq didn’t attack us on that day, and our misguided policy there has now taken more American lives than Al Qaeda. Here are the numbers: 3,015 Americans have died in Iraq as of September 9. 2,666 of these were military deaths and 349 were civilians.”

Official Rhode Island results
Maybe someone has a link to exit poll results?
5 minutes until the Rhode Island polls close.
Meanwhile, here’s Kos on RI-Sen: Laffey’s people think they won (from an hour ago, but lots of comments on the thread)
Howie, let me take the unexpected opportunity now to thank you for a mysterious Neil Young CD that arrived in my mail several weeks ago. Giving to Ned Lamont’s campaign made me feel a part of something larger than about who received the donation.
btw, I’m part Tar Heel as well, having spent 97-01 at UNC Hospitals for a residency. Tommy Yum and the Squirrel Nut Zippers?! Got it. SQN are the band I most associate with the time I lived there.
Fate would have it I’m the only non-musician in my family, but not for lack of being an audiophile. Of note, when he was only 16 (late 50’s), my father played the drums for Roy Orbison in west Texas. My grandmother wouldn’t let him leave town with the band though it didn’t diminish his drive to percuss. Even today he can still sit at a basic kit and mesmerize with a solo.

This is genius…just genius. I live in NC-5 and campaigned like hell for Dr. Harrell last time around. I’m still not over the 2004 election and the trauma of working the polls that day. This ad has made me feel so much more hopeful. I’m sharing it like crazy!
the Providence Journal has a ProJo (no, not “pro Joe”) Primary Blog that reports a possible record turnout in the Republican Senate primary.
‘Course, in Rhode Island, that’s still tiny:
Howie, I don’t know how you could measure the effect you and Team Blue America are having on the 2006 elections. But in the future when someone does their thesis on how the Democrats regained control of the congress, an entire section is going to treat Blue America.
I hope we can take some seats no one is watching Linda
Howie,
I have sent my money to ActBlue. You have so many good candidates that it is hard to choose who should get special attention. Aside from Ned Lamont, who I have contributed to a number of times (Joe Lieberman, The Bell Tolls For Thee), the candidate who has impressed me the most is Jon Tester. I saw his debate with Burns, and thought he was great. Another choice would be Sherrod Brown; I liked the way he answered questions at FDL.
Is Howie gone? I’d love to know the costs, etc. to getting one of these spots done for Carol Voisin, running against Greg Walden (OR-2). Who should I talk to?

Zippers and The Cheap Suit Serenaders, wouldn’t trade ‘em fer the world.
Howie Klein @ 40
May I tactfully suggest northern and central rural IN? We have some races that are a lot more competitive in IN-02 and IN-06, just to name two, than the mainstream media would lead you to believe. The “throw the bastards out” meme is simmering just below the surface in farm/manufacturing country. We used to build a lot of the country’s autos, and watching them bulldoze the plants (moved to Mexico, y’know) is like watching someone bulldoze the family home.
This is the kind of tune that gets caught in your head. I have been humming it since I first heard it. I want EVERYONE humming it! I think this is a great idea and I have sent my contribution in.
