Can someone explain to me how a movie which is purportedly based on and written based on the 9/11 Commission report can justify its star having to fact check his own lines? Or the director of the film paging through the report to justify scenes as written? (H/T to reader *xyz)
Meanwhile, sources on the set told The Post that during filming there were arguments over the veracity of the content.
That legitimacy problem, they said, was exacerbated by the fact that no experts were on hand to get things straight.
When Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel signed on to play Deputy FBI Director John O’Neill, who perished in the World Trade Center attacks, he thought the film’s aim was to be historically correct, he said.
"It turned out not all the facts were correct," which led to "arguments," he said on CNN.
Virtually from Day 1 of shooting, "Keitel put his own researcher on the case," looking to correct historical, character and other inaccuracies he found in the script, said John Dondertman, a production designer on the film.
That led to Keitel rewriting most of his own lines – which in turn meant almost daily revisions for cast members who had scenes with him.
A particular point of contention was a scene in which O’Neill, observing reams of Arabic documents, asks his assistant, "Do we have Arab translators?" only to be told, "I don’t know of any. I’ll call around."
"Keitel couldn’t understand why the FBI didn’t have Arabic translators, so the dialogue was changed on the spot," said a script supervisor.
On one occasion, Keitel holed up in his hotel for an entire day with director David Cunningham revising the script.
Other times, Cunningham would "fumble through the 9/11 Commission book trying to figure out how to correct details Keitel called into question," said the script supervisor.
The SCRIPT SUPERVISOR said this to the NYPost?!? No one talks about this sort of thing in Hollywood — ever. That is HUGE. Keitel is speaking up, and now the script supervisor. The director and writer are running around giving interviews to college newspapers in their own defense, after sending out pre-screeners to right wingnuts to play CYA in case ABC/Disney required edits?
Half-assed, sloppy, unprofessional, biased…and those are just the first four words that spring to mind. You know what would make me happy? Putting Joe Conason on for an hour or two before the damn thing ever starts to talk about each and every detail of smarm has been involved in the making of this craptastic festival of truthiness. (Not holding my breath.)
ABC/Disney has put its ass out there all on its own volition. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face — that’s gonna be one helluva Disney shareholders meeting next time, isn’t it?
(And for folks who need some amusement, Jesus General has a video that is worth a peek. Luv it [heterosexually speaking, of course].)

i can’t believe it. not only is the docu-fantasy of complete travesty of how hollywood actually works, but i’m first!
ReddHedd on fire today!
Thomas Kean really ought to be ashamed of himself. Did anyone have the guts or the brains to ask him how much he was paid for associating the 9/11 with this filth? and to which charity he’s going to donate that money now?
Also, having skimmed through a couple of earlier threads, don’t forget that John Lehman was the administration’s quasi-official spokesman on the Commission. Remember how Clarke swatted him down? He’s a bitter little hack.
Perfect timing Christy! I just finished all my cooking and I cleaned the whole damn house since 5:30 AM. Yikes…I’ll probably pass out reading your post!
Skippy!!!
First in our threads, and first introducer of Blogtopia!!!
This is the intro Jesus General made for the path of 9/11 or how to help the gop win. I don’t know if you can add it above but for a good laugh go see it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..&eurl=
sorry for the quick hit, I am running out the door to see the 9/11press for truth movie, but 1010WINS radio news just said that ABC just confirmed it will air this peice of crap (not their term) tonight and tomorrow as scheduled.
Oh, my gosh! I hadn’t realized that Keitel was playing O’Neill. Geez……
did they think there would be no fall out at all? stunning.
I just watched ABC from 8:45 to 9:00 a.m. (PDT) and there were numerous promo ads for upcoming ABC shows. Not one for Path to 9/11.
Que pasa?
Fantastic. The clip shows the truth in a few minutes what it took hours to lie about in PT9/11. KO must show this one (or more) times.
They obviously don’t care.
Where is the end of the line in the trip from fumble to embarrassment to crisis to catastrophe to disaster to meltdown? What’s next?
Clusterfuck City, Arizona. Enjoy your stay, Mickey.

Colonel O’Neill on SG1 ought to sue for defamation.
Path to 9/11, A Michael Brown Production.
This director is just another steaming slice of crap that has floated to the top of the bowl with the Republican Elite Peter Principle.
What a fucking sham.

I am ready for a full-on boycott of everything disney/abc. However, re: my disneyworld trip from the last thread, this is a serious quandry for me, and yes I’ll take unsolicited advice :)
We already have the plane tics. My FIL is putting us up in his disney-owned timeshare and paying for 4 day passes, so it’s not my money. But it is my conscience! The topper, I have a 6 y.o. daughter who will have the time of her life. I’m already a political extremist in my in-laws eyes, but I don’t care what they think. This is about my daughter, period. My wife and I just talked about this for an hour, there is no good solution.
Is there really no chance left that they’re going to pull the plug on this PT9/11 POS?
Gotta love that Jesus General!
just woke up after working until 4AM and that was the perfect pick-me-up!

Time to flush the bowl!

I heard interviews this week on tv where he said the following (these are all paraphrases, not actual quotes):
“I was a paid consultant”
“I was an unpaid consultant”
“If I were a paid consultant, I would give all of the money to charity.”
I’m not sure what the next spin will be, but I’m relatively certain that it will be another lie. Truth is not something this production has in abundance.
You know what, Redd, when I watched that Harvey Keitel interview with CNN (sorry, does someone else have the link?), it sure came across as a “hummahummahumma” job to me.
I believe my exact response was:
“smarmy, squirmin’, lyinsackashit”
Nope, I peg this is a pure back-and-fill operation on ol’ Harvey’s part.
OT: CNN says “strong earthquake” [didn’t catch the Richter number] centered 6 miles below surface, 250 miles west of Tampa. Florida Mom, Hypatia — y’all here? Feel anything? How about you, LindyH?

Can this be a learning opportunity for your child? “Mickey lied to America, so we can’t go to his house, honey?” Just guessing here, got none of mine own….
We had a pool going on the late nite thread about whether or not ABC would pull it. I said no, and pledged $25 to the Blue America page if I was right. It was siun’s idea, and a great one.
Let’s continue the pool here. As siun said, the prize is a new congress.
Kean said on CNN I believe that he was co-producer which sure sounds like a paid position to me!
Siun @ 17
we’re dancing to it at my house [heterosexually speaking…. well, not so much!]
Keitel. “Reservoir Dogs”. Great movie. Keitel. Damn. What an actor!
Thanks for reviving the betting pool Tommy Yum!
Who else is in?
I can’t get out of my mind that Clinton, Albright, Berger could have had lawyers in NZ and Oz standing by with libel suits ready to file, and slapped them into the courts on an emergency basis as soon as the first segment of Path to Libel was shown down under.
Public officials sue people all the time in those countries — and win. Truth isn’t even a slam-dunk defense to a libel suit in Australia, even if truth had been used.
A quick lawsuit there might have caused a hurricane of concern at ABC/Disney headquarters (butterfly effect).
But while blogs are nimble, politicians and statesmen/women of my generation are not.
Sending a letter was hard enough for them.
Filing a lawsuit?
Would probably take them months to decide, when it should have been done today in Australia.
rat bastahd @ 16
I have the same situation – going in January. I have decided that we will do Nick Hotel, Universal and Sea World. Honestly, Disney World really sucks anyway.
rat bastahd @ 16
Unsolicited advice as requested hehe:
Stay in the free timeshare. But go to nearby Knott’s Berry Farm instead.
Stay out in Valencia instead of Orange County, and go to Magic Mountain (Six Flags) instead.
There’s at least one water park in the area (San Dimas?), where your daughter would have a great time if she likes the water. It’s still pretty warm here.
The lack of advertising for the show makes me think they might still pull it, but I’m not betting on it.
I hate this new *meme*. It’s as grating as *nucular*. FACTS are FACTS. A fact by its very nature is true. Saying the FACTS were not correct is ridiculous. When the hell did people start using the word “fact” this way? I wish they’d cut it out.
That said, I feel for Keitel. He must be embarrassed about this project.
ratbastid: If you feel really bad about your daughter, why not buy yourself a box of 100 sheets of labels and print them out saying things like: “Path to 9/11-Micky Mouse is a Republican” and stick them all over the magical freakin kingdom. Just a thought…
Although I’m not sure why an actor of Keitel’s caliber didn’t read the script before he signed on. Unless he’s a wingnut, which I doubt.
In our desire to boycott lets remember to delete all things Disney ( ABC LIFETIME ESPN and DISNEY) from our cable or sat. boxes. Would be great if we could have a choice weather or not we actually pay for channels we choose to watch or not. After all if we pay for cable/sat we pay Disney no matter what we view) Perhaps we could hit our providers and congress over the proverbial head with this type of demand.
Is it possible that the Clinton folks can hit the airwaves tomorrow to slam ABC for showing such a hit piece???/
Rat @ 16
Years ago we got stuck going to Disneyland when our kids were 6 and 8. It was a BIL instead of a FIL, but still the same freebie invitation. Well, they didn’t have the time of their life. In fact, they loved the train ride down to Florida most of all. They were grumpy and tired walking the park; it was crowded and hot and all they wanted to do was go swimming in the hotel pool. Later, when my kids were in HS they went with the marching band; the HS kids were bored after the first day and tried sneaking out of the park. It’s really much more fun to take the kids to the beach and let them swim in the ocean. Back out and make another plan…let your daughter build sand castles herself and skip the Magic Kingdom.
If they have radios for your showers, why don’t they have monitors?
Still waitin’ for the Hollywood skinny on this crew from our own Jane Hamsher……suspect there’s a hell of a backstory here that we haven’t heard yet?
Eureka Springs, AR @ 34
Do what we did. We cancelled cable. Unplugged.
Siun @ 26
I am!
rat bahstad at 16 — I’d go. Your daughter is already looking forward to the trip, and it would be cruel to her to cancel. However, I have a fun solution for you, too: They have these handy little comment boxes all over WDW. You can spend the whole vacation putting in little notes about this craptastic extravaganza of a film, and because they have a response policy on complaints, they will have to answer each and every one of them. :)
“911 the Musical!”
My friend who passed away recently was well loved in NYC. for his humor among many other fine attributes. The last time I saw him we joked about “911 the Musical” and this idea seems so apt, after all Disney bought 42nd street. How do we combat corporate wing nuts with their power and money and our limp unconcerned comrades. If there is to be no censorship of extreme political defamation and lies to fly freedoms stars and stripes for the gleefully ignorant self anointed god sent on public air then suddenly “911 the Musical” has a ring; the backroom planning of the US. and Saudi oil elite, the American wing nut coup de taut, the bottomless greed, the American Texas illuminati ala Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salo.
If public air waves allow for controversial programs as “Path to 9/11″ there are plenty of others that have been prevented in the past that now should air. Such as a popular film that debuted at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival in the documentary film category and was awarded the Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest award, by an international jury should be a exceptable film for ABC primetime. As of January, 2005, the same film has grossed nearly US$120 million in U.S. box office, and over US$220 million worldwide, an unprecedented amount for a political documentary; Sony reported first-day DVD sales of two million copies, again a new record for the genre. The film has grossed a further $99 million overseas. From Wikipedia. Maybe ABC should show Fahrenheit 9/11 next Sept. 11.
JPL at 6 — I already linked that above.
Once again, the General rises to the occasion. I know I know the theme music he used but just can’t place it. Any help?
Jenny from the Blog @ 31
What you need to understand is the 30% that John Dean talks about, the rigid wingnut brain suffers have a different way of how this works.
Wingnuts have a fixed world view, THEY FIX the facts to fit their world view.
Liberals/Progressives review the facts and adjust their world view to fit the facts because we know that FACTS are FACTS. The problem with the BushCo perversion of statistics and MSU (making shit up), who knows what a fact is anymore?
Yeah, rat, maybe you can get some good pics of picketers to email us. If you get arrested, I could bail you out in about 1-1/2 hours!

I wonder if Disney/ABC will cover this? You think someone would wonder where $2.3 Trillion went. Ask Rummy…
I was having a lively discussion with my wife about Disney’s determination to turn itself into a tool of the extreme right wing of the Repiglican party. The discussion came down to what we would do if they went ahead with this propaganda piece. My wife laughingly suggested what I consider to be a brilliant response!
If Disney insists on trashing Democrats we can, respond by holding public trash Disney Parties!
A public get together where participants take every Disney product they own and one by one toss them into the trash!
The images of people tossing Mickey and Donald into the back of Garbage truck on local and national media outlets danced across my mind and inspired me to post this here. Cross posted to Daily.kos
This crazy, bizarro ‘up is down world’ we’re living in where there is no such thing as FACT anymore, I guess. It’s all *fair and balanced*. There’s only opinion and philosophy, left or right, and there’s no inherent truth to be found.
Feeds right into the rightwing propaganda, changing our language. I’m so sick of us allowing them to mutiliate the truth.
Christy, Thanks. The General has a way of improving lifting my spirits.
rat bastahd @ 29
wouldn’t they normally be promoting the hell out of it the afternoon of the day it’s supposed to air?
GSD @ 47

We can’t ignore this from today’s WaPo story on Bin Laden
Iraq has taken critical resources away from the war on terra.
katymine -
I hate to say it, but the left misuses the word *fact* as well. Christy (bless her beautiful heart) used it this way in a post the other day… It’s oozing into our everyday speech. :(
So Keitel was under some contract for a “documentary” that he couldn’t get out of when it turned out to be fiction? Why wasn’t he leaking information about the propaganda while it was in production? Sorry. It sounds like he’s just embarrassed and is now engaged in CYA.
We need commitments from the Democratic leaders that they will be conducting hearings before the election on this propaganda piece, and investigations after they take back the Congress.
The Republican maneuver to lie, distort and corrupt must be kept front and center to reach the low-info voters.
And I’ve been loving all the graphics on the major blogs, especially the Bushco in mouse ears ones.
Kurt, we’re going to disneyworld, in FL. I would love to make this a learning experience for my daughter, but instead I fear all I’d really do is further alienate the in-laws and that my daughter wouldn’t really get it. Not that I won’t try to explain it to her, even if we go. I can’t imagine letting them go in the parks without me, I’d make a statement, but would miss the crucial father/daughter interactions.
McGee (36), say what?
lina @ 52
Not if their “profit margin” wasn’t already assured. It will run without commercial interruption. The point is that it got made and will get aired despite the controversy, hopefully with as little fanfare as possible. That’s all their corporate/idealogue masters want.
Prof @ 27
My guess is they were hoping the movie would be pulled, thus no need to sue. Now that part one has aired, and it’s almost 7am in Wellington NZ, we’ll know soon enough if a lawsuit gets filed. I hope they sue UHP Productions and ABC into bankruptcy.
lina @ 50
a 2-day five hour $40,000,000 prime-time “patriotic” movie with no commercials would normally be hyped and shilled and ballyhooed for weeks beforehand. The lack of on-air promotion is stunning !
why aren’t the dogs barking?
I wouldn’t be so incensed by this farce of a project if it was airing with commercials. Of course it’s tacky and crappy, but the gravitas that goes along with an uninterrupted (except by Bush’s lie-ridden speech at halftime) program is a tremendous problem.
lina @ 10
I was watching ‘This week w/George’ and I saw the commercial at least once…maybe twice but I was switching back and forth from ‘Tim and Dickless’ and by the time I flipped back, it was gone
Jenny from the Blog @ 62
Correction: Bush’s lie-ridden commercial. We’ll then be returned to our regularly-scheduled reality.
Well, gotta go. I’m sorry to sound critical, Christy, because of all the incredibly wonderful work you do, day in and day out. I just happened to notice that *fact* thing the other day. Didn’t mean to single you out because I’m in awe of your talent and commitment. THANK YOU for all you do.

This might sound like rationalization, but: You made the decision to go on this trip based on information you had at the time, and you do have obligations to your daughter — as well as other family members who have made plans etc etc. I see nothing wrong with going on this trip. Going forward, you will make different decisions based on what you know now. You might spend less on “souveniers” than you would have. You might not watch so much ABC/Disney programming etc.
Bottom line, you have obligations to other people in this situation and you don’t really have the ethical right to make them pay for your political sensibilities. That would be like someone who doesn’t approve of abortion wanting to take the right away from everybody else.
*ilson46201 @ 59
I’m not surprised. This is thing has gotten more publicity than they could have ever hoped for. Why waste air time on promos when they can sell ad time in it’s place.
What’s at stake here is the demise of the Clusterfuckers.
If dems win the senate, there will be no third fascist appointed to the supreme court. If the dems win the house, there will be investigations and possibly impeachment of Herr Clusterfuck.
Now with those stakes- ya think that lyin in a stupid made for TEEVEE movie is goin ta bother these psychopaths?
I can’t see the Clintons and the rest pursuing the sliming. Their take may be that in a mud fight, the mud ends up on everyone. And then there’s Hillary. I’m for the fight but don’t see it coming. Hope I’m wrong.
RatBastahd,
I’ll add my 2 cents.
Everything seems paid for. Therefore, technically, you are not supporting them. I love the idea of the comment boxes, and the labels! You could also make sure you do not spend any money there. Pack your own lunches and drinks. Let the in-laws know that they can’t buy a souvenier for the little one.
And keep it to one day. The farm and amusement park sound like great things to do the other days. (couldn’t the inlaws get a refund or change out to a one day pass?) May be a good compromise?
Anyway, just my 2 cents!
The Democratic party doesn’t control any committees, because they don’t have a majority in either house. They can’t call any hearings, or issue subpoenas, or do anything about this or any other problem that needs to be solved.
Vote Democratic in November to change this.
Al Franken is the only guy I listen to anymore on the radio…
People use the word “fact” with quotations around it to mean “purported fact”. Sometimes the quote marks don’t show up.
Not a thing to get exercised about in my opinion.
Rat dear – Christy’s advice is also my opinion. And make a point of spending your money elsewhere while on the trip – take your daughter for lunch or brunch to the Peabody hotel near disney where they have ducks swimming in the fountain and parading for example – fun for her, good meal for you and no $ to Disney.
I raised two kids and quickly recognized that making them “sacrifice” for my political stands just made them hate politics rather than “educated” them.
please dont feed the trolls — quoting the trollery in its ugly entirety is particularly dumb, dontcha think?
Thanks for all the thoughts, ideas, etc. Mucho appreciated. I will go, but I will wrap my mind around what to do while there! My daughter can have a great time, and I can still do something to make a statement. CHS, will definitely fill out a bunch of comment cards I’m already thinking about the T-shirt I need to create: Disney sucks, Disney lies, something short and to the point. Added bonus, my in-laws will have to walk around with us all day to spend time with their granddaughter. :)
I don’t believe this brazenly mendacious propaganda piece is going to do anything but show Bush Republicans to be the desperately unprincipled self-seekers the majority of Americans already believe they are. As far as the mid-term elections are concerned, this transparent creation of lies and denial of facts will motivate and mobilize Democrats, soft Republicans and Independents to vote Democratic in even greater numbers. The key to winning the mid-term elections is voter turnout. This movie’s purposefully treacherous rewriting of the historical facts leading up to 9/11 will cause principled Americans to vote for change. It will provide Democrats a “recent” tangible action they can point to that associates Republican candidates to Bush’s failures leading up to 9/11 by pointing out its malicious intent and calculated deceit. The deliberate and dishonorable use of a national tragedy that all Americans still remember and mourn, as partisan propaganda is a depravity Bush Republicans can’t deny. They have provided Democrats the means to defeat them. The truth.

this fictional film should be used to beat every republican running for re-election this fall as evidence of their and this administration’s “path away from accountability.”
it’s more of the same from this crew who didn’t take responsibilty for the response to katrina and who won’t responsibly discuss their failures in iraq. just this week, christie todd whitman blamed the 9/11 rescue workers for their own illnesses.
it’s always the same: blame someone else. [this time though, disney helped them make a $40million excuse.]
sorry, *ilson, you are right. thanks for cleaning that up…
No one in Hollywood will ever work voluntarily again with any of the people involved in this production.
Harvey Keitel might – just might -come out of this OK as long as he keeps broadcasting how upset he is, how hard he tried to change things, etc etc (though, of course, if he had REALLY wanted to change things he would have written to Clinton about it three months ago.) But as for the rest of them, well, they’re toast — can you imagine those interns or script assistants or whoever showing up at their next job interview and someone looks at their resume and it says “Path to 9/11″? Nope, sorry, position is filled.

This may be a good idea, but Snow White is also a Disney character. I can think of no symbol Rove would rather wrap himself around. Another issue is Disney shareholders. I think we want to be careful to focus responsibility on Disney management for sinking $40,000,000 into a miniseries for which they can’t find a sponsor.
An idea, some have brought up previously, is blocking ABC, the same way we would a porn channel. I think that is something large cable providers would report back to ABC, but I’m not positive. If we start with ABC and that does not work, we can move onto Lifeline and ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESNPNews…..

When you realize how much obfuscation and denial is constantly employed by Cheney, no one should be surprised. They simply cannot show even the slightest hint of worry or fear. One step in that direction and their wintery spell is irreversibly broken.
That said, I am certain they will do everything imaginable, by hook or crook, to retain total control of Congress in the upcoming elections.
There is one bright spot at ABC: Boston Legal. And I suspect they’re already working on a script that will make wonderful use of this ugly mockudrama.
It sickens me that PT911 has already aired in other countries in an unedite form, not that I think editing will make much difference.
I noticed that tonight’s schedule shows Nightline airing at 10:30 pm eastern. Could this mean movie has been shortened significantly, or did they always plan to air Nightline in that slot?
It shocks me that ABC is going forward with this thing. I thought they’d see how shredded their reputation is by the mess and wisely step away. Shows what I know.

Off Topic but interesting. There is this newsmodel named Tessa on MSNBC this morning. She had two people on talking about PT911, and she kept talking on top of the guy who was pointing out the lies in the show. Generally, she was pissing me off.
Just a while ago, there was this exchange between her and Chris Matthews. You know how Matthews can drive you crazy, but every once in a while he says something great? I thought this was one of his “great” ones, and it gives an idea of how he’s going to frame the coming election season.

Still waitin’ for the Hollywood skinny on this crew from our own Jane Hamsher……suspect there’s a hell of a backstory here that we haven’t heard yet?
I’m also hoping, that given Jane’s Hollywood connections, she’s working on a major piece on this. Jane is perfectly placed to find out the phone numbers of the actors, agents, and PR people involved in this production, and could ask very simple questions like “was this script represented to you as factual, and based on the 9-11 Commission Report”.
**************
From what I can tell, the real problem with this production is that it lionizes monomaniacal figures like O’Neill and “Kirk” as a means of trashing the Clinton administration, without noting that there were excellent reasons for not following their recommendations — the vast majority of which were high-risk/low-probability of success proposals. Were it not for the “cooler heads” in the Clinton administration, we would likely have been confronted with quite a few new “Mogadishus” and “Iran Hostage Rescue failures.”
Apparently, in the scene where Albright is (falsely) portrayed as notifying Pakistan of the strike, the reason she does so is “regiona; concerns”. Absolutely NO perspective is presented — the fact that Pakistan was in a (relatively) low intensity war with India in Kashmir is not mentioned, and there were legitimate concerns that Pakistan could (mistakenly) immediately launch a retaliatory (and possibly, nuclear) strike against India when it detected missiles flying through their its airspace. In other words we were looking at a situation that could have lead to the deaths of tens of millions of people in South Asia…..
Furthermore, the program apparently makes the point that this “tip off” was the reason we “missed bin Laden”, despite the fact that Pakistan was not notified until the missiles were in the air, and according to the 9-11 Commission, bin Laden had left the training camp hours earlier. (The Tomahawks used travel at approximately 880 kpm, and have a range of about 1100 kilometers. In other words, they could not have been in the air for more than about 75 minutes, and thus had to have been fired after bin Laden had left the camp.)
(the film also apparently lionizes “Northern Alliance” leader Massoud, who had connections to the opium trade in Afghanistan. Indeed, Massoud and his very small band of followers were on the verge of being wiped out when the Taliban forbade the cultivation of the opium poppy plant, and it was this action by the Taliban that lead to a revitalized Northern Alliance because the tribal leaders/warlords maintained their power through the opium trade. )

I’d rather rehabilitate ABC than boycott them. If the only ones who keep watching are rightwingers, they’ll cater to them in this shoddy way again and again. BTW, whoever was asking upthread about the theme music on Jesus General’s spot – it’s “the Mod Squad.” For reasons that are unclear to me, long after I’ve forgotten my own name and sit covered in drool at the old folks’ home, I will remember ancient TV theme songs and commercial jingles…
A boycott generally must have a goal — like the Gallo farm workers boycott for which the goal was fair labor practices and contracts.
Once the goal is met, then the boycott must end. Otherwise, there is no incentive to meet the boycott demands. I am not yet certain what the goal of a post-airing boycott would be. Perhaps a change in the CEO? Get rid of Mucha? It is always helpful to spell out the goal before urging the boycott so that you know whether you have had any effect.
Liberal Heart @ 138
huh?
PS — on boycotts, it is also giood to pick a goal that is a likely result, like the firing of Cunningham and making sure he never again works in Hollywood. Then, your boycott will inevitably be successful.

I can too, but somehow only from the 50’s. I remember all the words to the “Have Gun Will Travel” theme song, “Car 54 Where Are You” and can whistle the trumpet solo that introduced the “Defenders”, which, BTW, inspired me to be a lawyer. Best lawyer show ever. Of course I haven’t turned on a TV in 30 years.
My kids loved the Universal park but didn’t like Disneyworld– however, they were a bit older than your kid.
Anyway, there’s a lot to do in Orlando besides DW. But I suspect a 6-year-old has idealized DW (they have done a great job with that) and will be disappointed. All I remember was getting stuck in some tunnel trying to get to some ride– probably a thousand people waiting in line in this little enclosed tunnel. It was pretty horrific. An hour in there, waiting for some stupid ride. My kids just cried. But there was no way out without shoving past hundreds of people. NOT fun.
rat bastahd @ 16
Two pieces of advice:
1. I’m sure you’ll do this, but keep an eye on whether she really is having the time of her life. Lots of younger kids expect to have a great time, but end up finding the costumed characters huge and scary, etc.
2. If you haven’t, get “The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World.” Our library has it; yours may, too. It tells you everything Disney won’t about how to minimize time waiting in line, what’s good for kids and what’s too scary or boring, and all sorts of other stuff about how to get the most out of your visit. If someone else’s money is going to to to Disney, you might as well make their profit margin as low as possible! *g*

What we really need to do is manipulate those black boxes on TV sets the way black box voting machines can be manipulated.
Meanwhile, I agree: a boycott without a stated goal is useless. And with the airing going forward, I don’t know what we can accomplish.
I think just pointing out relentlessly how false the movie is/was is the important thing. I actually see a plus in what has happened so far: how else could we have had so many people hearing in the MSM that rumors of the Clinton admin’s failures are false? And how else could we have had that message coupled with information that rightwingers are manipulating the media to make us think otherwise?
Perhaps we need a website where people can contribute their photos and videos, showing what alternate things they’re doing tonight and tomorrow night when the movie airs. Sort of along the lines of the website that featured apologies to the world when we went into Iraq.
I’ve had enough. See you later, firepups.

Rat bahstad,
Go ahead and go. Why should your 6 yr old have to suffer because of these lying s.o.b.’s. Just bring your own propaganda with you and place it ever so subtly throughout the park. Print out articles with the truth on 9/11 and place inside brochures on their brochure racks, leave on rides, in the restrooms, restaurant tables.. you get the idea. Just hide them on your person as they will probably confiscate them from you at the gate.

Your viewership–of any of their programming–helps with their advertising revenue, and that’s the only way the network makes money.
In my long experience with corporations, they will not do anything noble and decent unless it helps the bottom line. If their actions hurt their bottom line, they will first try to do nothing and hope the problem goes away. Only when it doesn’t will they then address the problem causing the revenue shortfall, and then only to the absolute minimum degree they think is required.
Making them hurt as they have never hurt before is a way of getting their attention, and convincing them that shilling for the right wing (most likely in the mistaken hope that it will help in the election, which may help with their plans for more consolidation and control over more media) won’t get them what they want, and, in fact, is counter-productive.
Someone said, “what’s the goal of a boycott?” Precisely this: re-education of the people at Disney-ABC who think the government is for sale. Think of it as behavior modification. No nice balance sheets for you until change your bad behavior.

Rat B, I haven’t read further down the thread yet, and I’m sure you’ve already received lots of advice. But I don’t think you need to enlist your daughter in this war. You could ask your in-laws if they would spring for passes to Universal, side trips to Busch Gardens and the Kennedy Space Center, and a show at Arabian Nights instead. But if they are set on Disney World, why not let them take your daughter by themselves? The time share is already paid for, so Disney isn’t making more money off you. And if it makes you feel better, wear anti-Bush T shirts, or if you prefer, pro-Democratic candidate of your choice T shirts while you’re there. (Or sweatshirts, depending on the weather.) Just a thought.
Montag: My point about watching the shows on ABC that meet your standards is directly related to revenues. If they see those as profitable, the others as not, that can adjust their thinking.
I was taken to Disney-something – whatever the thing in LA was way back in the day – I was 11 and I hated it. Too big, too hot, too crowded, lines too long, and generally over-stimulating. Course, I was a tender northern fernlet who didn’t do well in the heat, but still. Personally, I think small children do better with smaller, gentler treats – though kids raised on fast-paced electronic amusements may be a little tougher than I was.
That there are American citizens who call themselves patriots who believe it is justified to lie and distort the facts concerning the truthful historical events that lead up to the 9/11 tragedy all Americans remember and mourn, and that it is morally compatible with their perverse values to deliberately deceive and confuse school children with purposeful partisan propaganda is more disgraceful than anything I can imagine. There is no doubt that the Bush Republican right are a depraved and treacherous lot who have lost their moral compass. We just need to keep pointing to this “movie” as proof of that undeniable reality.
Thanks for the link and plug. I don’t think ABC wants to broadcast what I have to say about them…
Liberal Heart @ 159
1.) Let me get this straight, you want to still watch your ABC/Disney but rig the machines to say you don’t? What character!
2.) The boycott is to get their attention, then hammer them with e-mails, letters, phone calls and lawsuits. Never stop. ABC/Disney are toast. Note to DLC: this could happen to you. Leave us stranded here and we will make you irrelevant.
3.) “I want to save the world and still watch my shows.” What a patriot!
4.) Ooh, a *scrapbook* project, how sweet! ‘Scuse me while I draft another e-mail to the symphony to ask them to dump any Disney stock in their portfolio.

Perhaps you could think of some type of t-shirt that you might get away with. Something like “the only reason we’re here is my daughter” or “CARTOON CHARACTERS HERE AND THERE’ or ” it’s a small world and we’re onto you”.
Disney won’t let you be overtly critical, but you can get clever! I hope you and your family can have a great time AND pull off a good one! 16
Dear Rat Bastahd,
I have had similar dilemmas with my parents–they live right near a Walmart and constantly want to take my kids there. They have also paid for trips to Disneyworld, which has never been my first choice. My advice to you is: fill in comment cards on the sly, bring your own lunches if you can, but go. And don’t wear a Disney Sucks T-shirt. Just be nice about the whole thing because your in-laws are giving you and your family a nice gift, and family is precious. My father died recently and I am really sorry I even bothered to talk about politics with him because we weren’t going to change each other’s minds. Be an activist on other days. But during this trip, be your wife’s husband and your child’s father and be kind and grateful for the gift that they are giving you, because parents are a precious resource and they don’t last forever.

Go, if the tickets and everything are a done deal. But don’t spend a dime. Don’t buy a hot dog. Nothing. Jam your pockets full of snacks. Put a few snacks in a backpack. (They will search your backpack, so don’t put too many in there). Theme parks are structured to make money based on purchases inside, not tickets. A day where all the patrons buy a ticket can still be a money loser if people don’t buy stuff. To make a profit, there has to be a certain amount of per capita spending. The more people through the turnstile, the more each store and restaurant is expected to make. If you don’t buy stuff, you are screwing with their per cap. A day in which they don’t make the per cap is considered a bad day.
If there’s a free shuttle from the timeshare (there probably is), take it. That costs the park money. It costs something like 8 bucks to park your car, so don’t do that if you can avoid it.
Don’t spend the whole day there. Go canoeing at Wekiva Springs. Go to Cape Canaveral National Sea Shore. Visit some state parks. There’s lots of cool, kid-friendly stuff to do in Florida that is not mouse-related.
Well, Christy, since you asked, I can explain it to you. The whole thing is “State Run Media,” Disney goes way back with that….and the people in the cast are afraid that when the truth finally comes out about the entire thing, they will be splattered with the same pot of fecal material as those who actually did 9/11. There are more people than you know who just don’t buy it.
Additionally, isn’t all this 911 talk great for keeping people off the topics of Bush and his rubberstamp congress economic fuck-ups!
Conspiracy theory? What if it’s true?
HotFlash, The black box rigging comment was my attempt at humor. I hope your questioning my patriotism was likewise.
Lack of advertising on “Pth to 9/11″ (leaving typo in) says to me ABC was so unsure of the reception of this creation, they didn’t want to have to deal with advertisers pulling out or advertisers threatening to pull out of other ABC/Disney stuff in protest. No advertising means no flack from advertisers.
However, the money to pay to show this came from somewhere. One thing you can say about conservatives, they know how to conserve (hang on to) money.
Or maybe they learned the true lesson George W. Bush has to teach. GW was an oil promoter. Oil promoters never spend their own money, only the
mark’sclient’s.I read somewhere that ABC originally intended to sell advertising but found no “appropriate” takers (whatever that means) — then decided to take the high (seeming) road, saying because of the gravity of the subject they would have no commercial interruptions.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This has been bothering me all week, esp. since I see no way out of it. You are all such kind intelligent people, thanks for some precious insight that at least helps me accept what I cannot change! I’ll somehow make it work for everyone, me included. I think I’m going to go read the Disneyworld rules to see what I might come up with for a little fun at their expense. :)

The key to getting through any theme park with your sanity, and avoiding lines is 1) Go during the week, of course. 2) Get there as soon as the park opens. 3) When you enter the park, take a right. Get on the first ride you encounter, even if you hate it. Go to the next ride after that one, and ride it. Repeat, as necessary. 5) Go to the shows after taking in the rides, when your feet are tired and you’ve had just about enough of being outdoors. Again, go into the first show you see that’s available, proceed to the next show on the right. My son and I can take in most theme parks, all the rides and 1- 2 shows, in about about 6 hours, following these steps.
Screw Harvey Keitel. He could have refused the role if he felt it was wrong, but he didn’t. He took money for being complicit in promoting Bush’s lies. And the same goes for every other actor and actress on the crapudrama. If I were them, I’d be ashamed.

You will be better understood. In fact, I think if more women realized this about Disney films, it would jump start the boycott big time!
If you go to Disney, try to find ways to cost them money. Don’t steal, but you could be clumsy and break something expensive….something made by slave labor in China preferably.
Be creative.
And your daughter shouldn’t be watching crap like Cinderella anyway….it makes adulthood much harder. And Bambi is just a f*cking sadistic movie that kills a MOTHER! I had nightmares for weeks when I was a child. Same with Dumbo.
Let us know what you decide and what if anything you accidentally destroy.
True to my principles, I avoid the living room and the T.V. I’m not watching a politicized version of 911. Not me. Why, ABC might call doing a viewer poll [never happened]. I want to report not watching ABC. My wife, on the other hand, said, “I think I’ll watch it.”
Because our log cabin is small, we have earphones, so if one of us watches the T.V., the other doesn’t have to listen. After a while, she wanders into the computer room where I’m being principled and says. “I don’t know if that movie is contraversial or not. What it is, is, it’s just not very good. So I’m watching the other channel. They’ve got this amazing footage of…” And she proceeds to describe it in great detail – the footage from the French Journalists during the actual attack on the Twin Towers.
Now there’s an outcome I can get with. It never occurred to me it would simply be a crummy movie.
I’ll settle for that…
Don’t forget about WTC 7. The 47 story building that pancaked exactly like the Twin Towers, but WAS NOT HIT BY AN AIRPLANE!
The 911 Special Comission made no mention of building 7. None!
