Here's the Sunday Talking Head line-up. Read it and weep:
Meet the Press (NBC): Dick Cheney.
This Week (ABC): 9/11 Commission Members: Thomas H. Kean, Chair, Richard Ben-Veniste, Jamie S. Gorelick, John F. Lehman, Newsweek's Fareed Zakaria, The Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel, ABC News' Martha Raddatz, and George Will, Dr. Gene Steuerle, a 9/11 widower, shares his story of overcoming tragedy to form Our Voices Together, a nonprofit network dedicated to combating terror by exporting hope.
Face the Nation (CBS): Condi Rice, George Pataki, Chuck Schumer.
Fox News Sunday: Condi Rice, Howard Dean and a tribute to those lost on 9/11.
Late Edition (CNN): Condoleezza Rice, U.S. secretary of state; Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts: Foreign Relations Committee member; Said Jawad: Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States; Mark Malloch Brown: U.N. deputy secretary-general; Dr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie: Iraqi national security adviser; John Miller: Assistant director of the FBI for public affairs; Brian Jenkins: RAND Corporation; author, "Unconquerable Nation" and terrorism expert.
Washington Journal (C-Span): 8:30am - James Kitfield, National Journal, National Security & Foreign Affairs Correspondent; 9:15am - Natan Sharansky, Israeli Parliment Member, Likud Party
You'll pardon me if I skip a full hour of the Timmeh and Dick show. Blergh. Wonder if the green room at This Week will be a bit chilly with Tom Kean and the rest of the 9/11 Commission basking in the glow of his sell-out of history and decency -- especially since his smarmy tap dancing to sell the turd of a GOP-u-drama has now tainted the entire 9/11 Commission's claim to bi-partisan integrity? And Late Edition could be interesting, depending on whether Kerry gets asked appropriate questions (which, considering it's Blitzer, isn't exactly a given, but some of the other guests could be good as well) -- guess we'll see.
Today's bird is a scaled quail, shot in Texas. (The photo was shot in Texas, I mean. No particular reason, why do you ask?)

FDL!!!!!!!!
… so you weren’t referring to the fact that Vice-President Dick Cheney shot an old man in the face in Texas while “quail hunting” ?
PSA: Don’t forget the Donation Drive for Marcy Wheeler’s Book on the CIA Leak Investigation
I’m sure Cheney on MTP will be interesting, but I don’t have the stomach for it.
Also don’t have time to put a sheet of plexiglas in front of the TV - I’m sure I’d start throwing things at him - such a fucking liar, how does the man sleep at night???
Vice President Cheney shot an old man in the face in Texas.
Today’s bird is a scaled quail, shot in Texas. (The photo was shot in Texas, I mean. No particular reason, why do you ask?)
Nuttin’ like a 707 to get the day off right, Redd — Good Morning to your house!
karen allen @ 7
…and the old man apologized to Dick! “Thank you sir! Might I have another?”
twolf1@5.37
Still hoping for snail mail address for donations. Tks much when possible.
Morning Christy!
karen allen @ 8
My God Really? Vice President Cheney shot an old man in the face in Texas?
Hey - no basking today, everybody. We got us some NYTimes butt to kick.
BTW, Driftglass hits a three-run-triple…
twolf1 @ 10
so Cheney gleefully obliged and fired again !
Can someone please muzzle La Condeee? Or send her on a quail hunt in Texas with our Twisted Veeper.
Old Sow @

Does a Twisted Veeper look anything like a Scaled Quail (name’s Dan, ma’am).
I can’t believe the fucking NYT.
SIGH Having just poured my first cuppa coffee and not having seen it yet, I’m almost afraid to ask. What did the NYTimes do now?
karen allen @

…with a $23,000.00 Italian shotgun.
Why does he hate American firearms? Why does he hate America?
Ick….puke….complete nausea.
What a way to wake up on a Sunday Morning.
If I see Chuck Schumer on one more talking head show, I will need to drink electrolytes for the rest of my life.
With regard to ‘This Week’, it could be a good show, and possibly the last one I watch on any ABC outlet ever again.
Some one needs to ‘blast’ Tom Kean. Will Ben-Veniste sharpen his claws and skewer? My money is on softballs and ass pats.
Christy,
They’re playing stenographers to Loserman. newtonusr has the link @ 12.
I will try to watch MTP,but I’m wondering what will happen to the US if they ARE still in control after Nov.
Old Sow @

Haven’t been outside yet, but it’s lookin like a fine late-summer mornin in mid-coast Maine. And you?
Gawjeous, just gawjeous, tpres, where you now?
Hey all,
Josh Marshall has a post quoting today’s Sunday WaPo.
The Repubs are reportedly going to spend 90% of their campaign budget on negative ads, and in preparation, have had a team of operatives combing through Dem candidates’ tax returns, court records, underwear drawers, garbage cans, NSA transcripts, I mean legally available public records, looking for dirt to pump through the Wurlitzer, in an attempt to distract attention from the substantive issues on which Republicans decisively lose.
Wouldn’t it be lovely to pull a Rove and turn this dirty trick back on them? I can imagine a TV spot showing some smarmy, greasy, trenchcoat-wearing guy combing through a garbage can, or perusing a file cabinet, flashlight in hand, or perhaps better, breaking into a house, to find some private info, then characterize it as Republican standard operative procedure. It could even be used to reignite controversy over illegal domestic spying.
I swear, these people are slimeballs, with the ethics of insects. We must take our country back!
Old Sow @ 23
Belfast is where I park my Prius, but FDL is my second home.
Mornin’ All,
leftofliberal - you owe insects everywhere an apology
Good Tim showed up for MTP this morning - he’s being pretty dogged with the Big Dick - started right off with the failed GWOT, is following up after every spin Dick makes.
Am listening to ABC -Stepandfetchit -on the radio. (Have removed ABC from TIVO). This is crap. His questions are zip, and it is just ping pong, back and forth, Rep and Dem. So there is no sense of one side having the right (factual) perspective. Nothing so far on the ABC/DISNEY fiasco scheduled by ABC for tonight and tomorrow.
Re the ABC movie — in today’s NYT, page 15, there is a full page ad about “The path to 9/11.” After the title, The ad simply states, “The years that led up to it. Everything that might have prevented it.” But that’s not what grabs your attention.
The full page is filled with a segment of the American flag. The flag has been torn, and through the tear, a man’s hand pulls through the tear to allow the man behind to peer through the tear. We see only the man’s eyes, and they are menacing, furtive. He is a threat. But this is not a “terrorist.” He’s white, one of us — and you can interpret that literally.
The none too subtle message is that America was attacked, not because officials in the WH were too timid or cowardly or inept but because someone betrayed the country and that led to 9/11.
You have to see this to appreciate how sinister it is. This is deliberate.
At the bottom of the ad is printed: “A television movie event presented with no commercial interruptions. Premiers tonight 8/7c
The ABC logo, followed by abc.com
Due to the ubject matter, viewer discretion is advised.
MTP: Timmeh keeps making Dick defend the obvious bullshit that has come out of GWB’s mouf.
tommy yum @ 16
That’s right. You can’t.

(y a w n)… blerh… coffee! I need coffee! dawn is just breaking here on the West coast… a little overcast and coolish this morning…
woke up unnecessarly earlier this morning, worrying about damn Disney…
Good Morning, all…
Timmeh put up a pre-war clip of a Dick speech: “There is no doubbt that Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction.”
thanks for blogging Shooter Dick Cheney, op… I’m not sure I can stomach him today…
Cheney is like an automaton - he hasn’t adjusted one word of his spiel over the last 4 years to adjust to emerging facts.
leftofliberal @ 24
Well, I certainly hope the DNC is prepared for this strategy - since it’s the only tune that Rove et al seem to know how to play. Clinton addressed their tactics at the 2004 Dem Party Convention, i.e. they can’t run on the issues so they base their campaigns on fear, smear and distortion.
And speaking of the incompetent hit job by the NY Times - it seems pretty obvious that traitor joe has signed up for a piece of the GOP strategy. First of all, Joey’s web site looks like the Drudge Report - almost totally focused on nasty swipes at Lamont. Secondly, the site breathlessly tells all of Joe-lie’s supporters to stay tuned for soon breaking information about the “real” Lamont.
When is the Dem party going to cut Lieber-liar off at the knees?
sorta OT - update on Senator Kerry’s speech yesterday.
7 MA firepups (RevDeb, Mr RevDeb (Ralph), scarecrow, Kathyrn in MA, mcgee, austin and me) got together to hear Senator Kerry’s talk on “Real Security for America”. Thanks to RevDeb, who let me use her recorder, I’ve posted mp3s of Senator Kerry’s speech, and Senator Hart’s intro and links to the transcript.

EPU @ 389, prev thread. Morning!
op99 Morning! - we need play-by-play - we’re out west!
Tpres, interested in a mid-coast/eastern Maine Lake get together sometime? Susan, MaryJane and I got together in July and are talking about sometime this month or next again…..
Timmeh got Dick to back off the “linkage” between Saddam and Al Qaeda.
Morning, OldCoastie, breakfast still being served on the last thread . . .
Wow, Timmeh is not backing down on this, he’s grilling him like a Democrat.
“shot in Texas”; I did wonder for a sec, it looked so alive-
Today’s bird is a scaled quail, shot in Texas. (The photo was shot in Texas, I mean. No particular reason, why do you ask?)
Thanks for starting my day with a good laugh Christy.
op99 @ 35
yes. facts do not matter. cheney does not waver. the truth is what he says it is. people respect that. a man of integrity. you can count on dick. anybody want to go hunting with dick?
Further on the menacing man behind the flag — on the previous page (14) of today’s NYT, there is another ad, 3/4 page, that is also filled by the American flag. This one, however, has the flag presented as a set of venetian blinds, so that each slat or two becomes one of the flag’s stripes. A man is also seen holding down a slat and peering through, but the impression we have of him is that this man, also one of us, is probably spying on us.
This add, immediately opposite the ABC ad I described above, is from Discovery Channel and it’s for Ted Koppel’s “The Price of Security,” “Five years after 9/11, where do we draw the line between protecting national security and our personal freedoms.” It’s about whether spying on Americana in the way the Bush Administration has chosen to do is right, given the threats.
Not to be outdone, on page 17, there is another full page add by CNN. The page doesn’t use a flag; it’s mostly blank; there are four small screen shots about 2/3 the way down the page. The caption is “September 11, 2001 5 years later”
“On Septevember 11th, 2006, CNN Pipeline will stream CNN’s televion coverage of 9-11-06 in real time, as it happened that day.”
No flag, no hidden message. Just a repeat of what they showed on that day.
Meet the Press is a MUST SEE. Now Tim has Dick condescending, “Tim, let me tell you again what you don’t understand.” (paraphrase)
ABC - on radio. Stepandfetchit - brings up recent report no relationship between Saddam and Osama. Now brings up TV film, and Kean’s involvement. Says Kean receives a letter from Berger and Albright who say = untruths and against own commission findings. Ben Venista also lobby against it. Kean says should be aired, I am against censorship. I have not seen cut. Not a documentary, a mini-series. It makes a contribution. Step says, wait, there are falsehoods, directly contradicted. Did scenes get changed. Kean: haven’t seen final product. Kean - people who see it will understand better minds of terrorists - both administrations are faulted. Step: Ben Veniste what do you think, say based on 9/11 report. Are you comfortable. Ben Veniste: Power of docu drama will lead people to think it is fact. Hope ABC will correct falsehoods. Step: Will it tarnish recommendations of 9/11 commission. Ben-Veniste, I don’t think population ready to see this. Need focused approach to threats. Step to Jamie: Are you OK. She says -if we are going to send it to scholastic as truth. Step -they pulled back. Jamie: can’t remedy it until know what goes wrong. Step should it be pulled? She says - pulled or fixed. It contradicted words of 9/11 commission. This rewrote that history. Republican (name?): it should go foreward. It won’t have impact. If you don’t like hits to Clinton administration, welcome to club. Republicans have lived with Michael Moore. Step to Kean: Are you sure it will be truthful and that people will have good comments. Kean: I haven’t seen final cut, much needs to be done to make this country safer. [very approx. precis of the segment].
Check out ABC “news”. Now we’re CLINTONISTAS
http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2406097
I think Medina’s piece in the NYT’s is going to help Ned with Independants and Republicans in CT. I also don’t think it will hurt him with Democrats. It’s a very thoughtful letter that imo has aged very well. The problem was Ned’s most recent statements about Joe in the well of the Senate @ Monica. I think those are manageable. I think Ned can say, that his criticism of Joe is in context. Joe was supposed to be as outspoken about Rumsfeld, K Street Corruption, (pick your disaster), as he was about Monicagate.
Timmeh delivering any pressure at all on Shooter?
op99 @ 42
do you mean, like he was a democrat?
22 minutes in and Timmeh is not letting Dick off the hot seat. He has’nt been on MTP for 3 years, now he’ss never return, lol.
newtonusr @ 38
Got it. I agree about how clean the Lamont campaign has been. All any half way enterprising reporter has to do is to compare the two web sites. However, Lieberliar has the Rove strategy of projection down pat - tell everyone that Lamont is fighting a dirty campaign and that’s what’s printed and repeated.
Kerry tried to run a clean campaign and focus on the issues and it didn’t work. I hope Swan and others in the Lamont camp understand this and take the offensive. I hope all of the Dem campaigns for 2006 take the offensive and have rapid response teams to address each and every smear, immediately. It worked for Clinton and he certainly was carrying a lot of baggage.
Old Sow @ 39
Sure - tpres at verizon dot net
op99, thanks for live bloggiing.
Wonder what’s up with Kindasleazza? She’s gonna be so busy today, she’ll have to take off the Italian dominatrix boots and step into some rubber shoes….
Dick: If the US backs down in Iraq, no one else in the world will ever trust us to fulfill our commitments, and the terrorists have won.
Tim: But the Iraq war has been one policy and strategery blunder after another. (all paraphrased)
op99, richmond - thanks!
maybe Timmeh can feed Shooter a cheeseburger after the show…
Dick: If we had it to do over again we’d do exactly the same thing.
Tim: Exactly the same thing? (Replays the “greeted as liberators” clip.)
Great job, Richmond at 48 — thank you!
George (Will) and Katrina (Van der) both terrific. Will says Osama is a man in a cave promoting Jihad. Nothing There. Katrina says there are more important issues facing this nation. (both terrific) - and usually dislike Will.
OldCoastie @ 60
The undead don’t eat do they?
John Casper @ 50
Thoughtful, and reads like someone wrote it last week. Mature focus and understanding. Ned Lamont is a really good guy.
I don’t think Howard Dean would have been much tougher on Dick. Tim blocks and parries every Cheney punch.
Millineryman @ 63
seems to me I read long ago that Shooter really enjoys little bits of steak with extra salt… so, I guess he eats! and I’m all in favor of anything that will raise his cholesterol levels…
Dick: I don’t think you can explain 5 years of no attacks without concluding that somebody’s done something right. I think we’ve done a pretty good job.
wow… Timmeh doing his job… wow!
Ya know, it’s going to be hard to boycott ABC/Disney, LOST is pretty much the only show I watch regularly, besides the Daily Show and the Colbert report.
But I am so angry about this crap, I’m going to boycott anything to do with ABC and Disney. I was going to buy the LOST Season 2 on DVD - and now I’m not. That’s $40 buck right there that the All Bush Channel won’t see. And I have a bunch of nieces and nephews that I dote on - they won’t be getting Disney toys. And my sister is going to take the kids to Universal Studios instead of Disney when they are in Florida this year. All told - my family will forgo at least $1000 worth of Disney products in the next couple of months. It adds up.
You wonder why 43% of the American people think Saddam had something to do with 9/11? It’s our crappy media - and it’s time they pay.
ABC has thrown down the gauntlet. Clintonistas, my ASS. No more Mr. Nice Guy. They had their chance. Where’s the D-Con?
Tim: Iraq leaders refuse to disavow Hezbollah, blame the Israelis for Lebanon. What does victory look like?
OldCoastie @ 60
About a 2-pounder, jooosy, with a half-pound of CheezWiz and butter-fried (undrained) onions on it, seasoned with half a shaker of salt, and a side of the world’s greasiest fries. Big ol’ honking
milkbutterfatshake to wash it all down. Fried pies for afters.Eat hearty, R. Bruce — nummies!
fahrender @ 71
LOL
fahrender @ 70
They used that term the other day in an article headline also.
fahrender @ 70
They really do need to pay deeply for that one.
Step has army changed: Van der: You can’t have a war on terrorism. Bush has contriubted to problems we face in world. Will: They attacked us. Van der: It was an overblown threat. Will: Attempt of terrorists to push us into Iran. Step: President’s announcement on secret prisons and people on trial, challenged congress to authorize it. Fareed?: Assume there will be some version on this, but not what he wants. If this is a war about not radicalizing the Moslem war, than this is key issue. That the problem in Iraq. Van der: When Bush said what he did - wantom disregard for constitution, congress finally waking up, ditto supreme court. Congress says you have failed. Will: I have a feeling they will come closer to preznit than people realize.
Dick Cheney: A Despicable Excuse for a Human!
George Orwell:
“What can you do against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?”
how could he have forseen Cheney on MTP?
Dick: Because we’ve invaded Iraq, you don’t have Saddam with WMD, or Iraq as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Tim: but you don’t have Iraq as a buffer to Iran. (Commercial break at 35 minutes in - more Dick after the break)
Steeled self to watch MTP long enough to see Cheney choke (yeah!), sip water, recover (da*n!, double da*n!!), ask Tim what Tim doesn’t understand about Dick’s lies. TV off. Mucho Timmy ache. Take it away ABC/Disney.
annburns @ 70
I feel exactly the same way. LOST is the only network program I currently watch - and I too have not bought the DVD of Season 2 for precisely the same reason - so they’ve lost $80. And I certainly will not be watching any of the series in the future.
If ABC does go ahead with this disaster, I agree that we need to mobilize effective boycotts of ABC & Disney - and let the advertisers know it.
Christy Hardin Smith @
17
Christy– Last night, I sent you an e-mail on the NYT article and a critique of it.
fahrender @ 51
Like Dick was a democrat.
Katrina: it will be tough on democratics, but they can win on political and moral grounds. Will and I don’t speak for demo party, but accountability runs from top down. We need a reckoning, because it has pushed extremism. Fareed? -will it help politically? I don’t think so. Step: ABC movie: contained fictionalized scenes. I got criticism about what taken out. What should be done? Will: docucramas bad, cites Oliver Stone. Democrats get as angry as want, but Michael moore they supported. Katrina, criticism of this from right and left, members of commission etc. I would like to see the recent report on it. And Dick Cheney 4 years ago on meet the press, link between Iraq and Osama. Show abuse of trust. Will: what think of Fahrenheit. Katrina: this is supported by ABC. Different. Fahreed: Docudrama a different story. Scenes actually made up.

Another angle to the boycott of Disney is working on fast food companies so they cross market the characters from Disney films.
Dick calls Sanger/Schmitt story “another one of those thumbsuckers … “
Now says (essentially) he thinks he knows the law better than SCOTUS
Millineryman @ 75
yes, but, as is said about comedy: timing is everything, and today’s timing means it’s time for a sh*t storm. this isn’t about 9/11. this is about 11/8! and as i said before, the gauntlet has been thrown. BY AN MSN NETWORK!

Dick doesn’t expect Dems to win House - BWAHAHA. I guess we can take that to the bank like everything else he ever said. (/sarcasm)

in heaven, Cheney manages all Repub campaigns
“We’ve had oversight all along,” and thinks GOP will retain both Houses — bets Timmeh a dinner on it, does Shooter — who hasn’t been shooting since Harry got it in the face (but only because it’s outta season).

Harry Whittington is doing very well.

ugh - creepy!
theExile @ 100
yes, and there’s more than one definition of oversight.
twolf1 @ 97
Sticky wicket for us. The agency wasn’t too far off on Iraq, etc, but CheneyCo couldn’t do without a fall-agency. Now CIA has been completely compromised and infiltrated, and we want to rely on their assessment. When a Democrat takes over, what will be left?
Cheney interview over, I only wish Tim had drawn the parallels between the PR campaign running up to Iraq with what’s happening now WRT Iran. I give Tim an A, Dick a D (because he didn’t run away screaming) for today’s performance.
cbl @ 98
Yeah, just saw. Interesting. Senna killed Monza, 96, right?
Everything Tim reads to deadeye he says I HAVEN’T READ IT YET,but trust me we will keep our power in Nov.
thanks, op99 for doing all that… I’m just so sick of these guys, I’m not sure I can do that to my brain today…

I agree, it just goes to show how ingrained their agenda is.

Cheney is so full of hot air, they must have to tether him to the ground like a balloon in Macy’s parade….
But, the “trust me” is bothersome. Have they got the machines already programmed?
op, richmond - Thanks so much!
annburns @ 103
Great! And they will be much healthier and happy for it.
Y’all, what do Chimpy and Shooter know about that makes them so smug re November? That’s not just
