I am as furious as I can ever remember being at the moment. LHP sent me a link this morning to a WaPo article, and I only got about seven paragraphs into it before I had to stand up and walk around the house a while before I could read any more of the article. Here’s what cause my sharp intake of breath and increasing feeling of rage:
The clandestine U.S. commandos whose job is to capture or kill Osama bin Laden have not received a credible lead in more than two years. Nothing from the vast U.S. intelligence world — no tips from informants, no snippets from electronic intercepts, no points on any satellite image — has led them anywhere near the al-Qaeda leader, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials.
"The handful of assets we have have given us nothing close to real-time intelligence" that could have led to his capture, said one counterterrorism official, who said the trail, despite the most extensive manhunt in U.S. history, has gone "stone cold."
But in the last three months, following a request from President Bush to "flood the zone," the CIA has sharply increased the number of intelligence officers and assets devoted to the pursuit of bin Laden. The intelligence officers will team with the military’s secretive Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and with more resources from the National Security Agency and other intelligence agencies….
Intelligence officials think that bin Laden is hiding in the northern reaches of the autonomous tribal region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. This calculation is based largely on a lack of activity elsewhere and on other intelligence, including a videotape, obtained exclusively by the CIA and not previously reported, that shows bin Laden walking on a trail toward Pakistan at the end of the battle of Tora Bora in December 2001, when U.S. forces came close but failed to capture him.
Many factors have combined in the five years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to make the pursuit more difficult. They include the lack of CIA access to people close to al-Qaeda’s inner circle; Pakistan’s unwillingness to pursue him; the reemergence of the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan; the strength of the Iraqi insurgency, which has depleted U.S. military and intelligence resources; and the U.S. government’s own disorganization. (emphasis mine)
You think the GOP-U-Drama about to be broadcast on ABC/Disney includes a scene showing George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld giving the order for forces to stand down in Tora Bora, with a flash to Bin Laden walking away unscathed toward the territory of our good old ally, Pakistan? You think the Director’s CIA folks told them about that — or would they even use it if they knew? Doubt it — doesn’t fit the political world view and agenda of a "blame Bill Clinton" group of financiers, does it?
They apparently have made a few changes to the GOP-U-Drama, if it airs here the same as it has already aired in New Zealand. I got an e-mail from a reader living there — Kevin Jon Heller who blogs at Opinio Juris – and I thought I’d share it with everyone else. Here’s what things looked like in NZ’s version of the film:
To the best of my knowledge — which comes from E&P’s summary — there are only three changes, all very, very minor:
1. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the program. It is never repeated.
2. Berger does not hang up on the snatch team in Afghanistan — the scene ends with him staring straight ahead, not responding to Tenet.
3. After Massoud asks if everyone in Washington is a coward, there is no cut to Clinton.
Other than that, the Berger scene is exactly the same. And the Albright scene has not been touched. Even the scene with the reporter saying that "pundits" are blaming the Sudan bombing on Clinton’s desire to divert attention from Lewinsky is still there.
"The Path to 9/11" — Part One
Opens with disclaimer. (Never repeats it.)
Notes the film is based in part on “The Cell.”
Quotes the 9/11 Commission Report about the need to get the history right!
Includes the scene where “American Airlines” lets Atta onto the plane despite the warning.
Includes scene with Berger and Tenet worrying about the snatch.
Includes the scene with Clarke telling O’Neill that the Administration is worried about political fallout and legalities, view terrorism as a law and order problem.
Includes the cut from “covering your own ass…” to Clinton denying sexual relations with Lewinsky.
Includes O’Neill telling Clarke that Clinton’s refusal to order the killing is “pathetic.”
Includes the call to Langley for approval to snatch bin Laden. Berger says he doesn’t have the authority, they’re not on the same page, he’s worried about the intel.
Deletes the hang-up – the scene ends with Berger staring straight ahead, not responding to Tenet’s angry statement about the buck stopping with him after Berger tells him he can recommend the snatch to Clinton.
Deletes the cut to Clinton after Massoud asks if they are "all cowards in Washington."
Includes “Patricia” blaming Tenet for not ordering the strike on bin Laden when they had the chance.
Includes O’Neill insisting Clinton has to do something, has to act.
Includes Albright saying they have to focus on bin Laden, not on the Taliban, because the latter is too major of an operation and the President is not willing to go that far.
Includes the reporter in the Sudan saying that Republicans and pundits are accusing Clinton of ordering the attack to divert attention from Lewinsky.
Includes Massoud claiming that Washington informed Pakistan of the Afghanistan strike.
Includes Albright confirming that the Administration warned the Pakistanis because of “regional factors” and Berger mentioning the problems with covert action.
Includes O’Neill praising Tenet’s “cojones.”
Includes the mock assassination of Clinton.
So it looks like the wingnut brigades who are more interested in political revenge than honesty will be happy — but I am just plain disgusted. And I can’t imagine that Part II will be any more historically accurate. Shame on ABC and Disney.
A reader with ties to Hollywood sends in the following question about ABC/Disney:
When networks do "docudramas" they have standards and practices department that goes over this with fine tooth comb… what happened here? Who was doing the fact checking? Who looked over the script and approved stuff that never happened?
I’d like to know the answer to that myself, because I happen to know that the legal department for television and movies, in the same way that they do for publishing, normally goes over all of the facts and representations with a nitpicky fine-toothed comb that demands accountability for every tiny detail. Where were they on this film? This is exactly the nightmare scenario that give lawyers ulcers and sleepless nights: fact free defamatory moments that tie you up in litigation for the rest of your freaking life. Unless, of course, there was either complete incompetence (hello shareholders demanding accountability) or an agenda that disregarded potential litigation (um…yeah…accountability would go double here).
It is worth a reminder that several leading historians sent a letter to Robert Iger saying that this GOP-U-Drama should be pulled:
Dear Robert Iger:
We write as professional historians, who are deeply concerned by the continuing reports about ABC’s scheduled broadcast of “The Path to 9/11.” These reports document that this drama contains numerous flagrant falsehoods about critical events in recent American history. The key participants and eyewitnesses to these events state that the script distorts and even fabricates evidence into order to mislead viewers about the responsibility of numerous American officials for allegedly ignoring the terrorist threat before 2000.
The claim by the show’s producers, broadcaster, and defenders, that these falsehoods are permissible because the show is merely a dramatization, is disingenuous and dangerous given their assertions that the show is also based on authoritative historical evidence. Whatever ABC’s motivations might be, broadcasting these falsehoods, connected to the most traumatic historical event of our times, would be a gross disservice to the public. A responsible broadcast network should have nothing to do with the falsification of history, except to expose it. We strongly urge you to halt the show’s broadcast and prevent misinforming Americans about their history.
Sincerely,
Arthur Schlesinger

Lizbeth Cohen, Harvard University,
Nicholas Salvatore, Cornell University;
Ted Widmer, Brown University;

The losses suffered by Americans on 9/11 should not be trivialized by a manipulative, false, anti-historical piece of fiction masquerading as fact to manipulate the public. That is so far from what ought to be considered ethical or responsible, and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves, if they had any scruples left at all.
At long last, ABC and Disney and every single person involved in this craptastic GOP-U-Drama, have you no shame?

The No’s can go forever. I am watching This Week right now….this very well may be the last ABC program I ever watch.
Cheney doesn’t buy the poll cited or the premise of Tim’s question…he disagrees with everything Tim poses.
He just called the Pakistanis Paks– insulting and dangerous bloodthirsty maniac.
Tim is doing a fine job, i must say.
I didn’t really think this information would ever emerge into the blogosphere much less the lickspittle corporate media.
Of course Bush pulled the pursuit off OBL. The last thing he and Cheney want is to catch Osama. He is their most valuable tool in the suppression of dissent and the destruction of our freedom here at home.
Fortunately, many Americans are now aware that Bush and Cheney and the people who put them in power, no I don’t mean the Supreme Court, do not have America’s best interests at heart.
OBL has lost much of his ’scare power’ due to The Idiot’s mishandling of the ‘OBL wants to blow up your bingo game…’ meme so I don’t think we will see or hear much about him personally in this ‘be afraid’ campaign the Bushist scum are trying to mount to cling to power.
It will be more lies about Iraq as even the AssClowns like Mehlman and Frist know that Iraq is killing them politically.
I don’t put it past OBL to try another ‘I’m comin’ to git ya…’ video though. He is no doubt well aware that his facilitator Bush would be in trouble with a Democratic Congress.
Put please let’s put to bed the idea that Bush and his cabal ever wanted to catch Osama.
They didn’t and they still have no interest in ever doing so.
Great post! Matt Stoller at MyDD may be onto something big about this story – Mickey Mouse’s Karl Rove, Zenia Mucha.

Maybe this film should be renamed:
Birth of a Nation Redux – The Neocon Chapter
a right wing centennial event (nine years early) justifying the neoconservative movement a century after the first edition justified the KKK.
I believe this makes me so angry because it is obvious, provable lies and I now feel powerless to stop it.
TPMCafe:
John Beug, the widowed husband of Carolyn Beug, a former vice president at Walt Disney Records who was on the plane that slammed into 1 World Trade Center, has written a letter to Disney chief Bob Iger pleading with him not to run the film.
Dear Mr. Iger,
I have seen the advertisements for and read the press coverage of ABC’s film, “The Path to 9/11,” that your network plans to air this Sunday and Monday to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. I am writing to express my concern and deep reservations about this film and to ask you, out of respect for the victims of 9/11 and their families, not to air it.
My wife worked for the Walt Disney Corporation and was a victim of the terrorist attacks as a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11. I have great respect for you and your company and I know that you must have worked hard to make a good film. Admittedly, I have not seen it. However, accounts from those who have suggest that it contains inaccurate and invented scenes. It seems to me that fictionalizing this tragedy does not honor the memory of those who were lost on September 11th.
Given the gravity of this event for our nation and the personal loss I suffered, I believe it is critically important that we do everything possible to prevent another 9/11. That begins with making sure that we are united in our understanding of what we could have done better in the years, months and weeks leading up to the attacks of 2001. I am deeply concerned that Americans will watch this film and not fully understand –- or be led to misunderstand -– the true history of this tragedy.
I feel the 9/11 Commission Report was a correct and very responsible accounting of the terrorist attacks of 2001. Since “The Path to 9/11” deviates from this report in key instances, I strongly and respectfully urge you not to air this film.
Sincerely,
John Beug

Wait, this isn’t adding up —
Zenia Mucha’s connection to Pataki/EVPship “of Corporate Communications for Disney Corporation, in charge of all media relations, financial communications, employee communications, and corporate positioning at Disney” allow her exactly what sway over the legal department and the board -members with fiduciary obligations to the shareholders?
What’s Matt Stoller’s argument? That Disney’s willing to put itself this massively at risk for Pataki?
C’mon.

I think they will catch someone they call OBL… may not be the real guy (how about the osama guy with the “I heart Lamont sign?)
Strange bedfellows Bush and OBL: each succeeding because of the other. Thanks to OBL, Bush keeps us wrapped in fear, rubberstamping everything he wants and thanks to GWB, OBL meets his recruitment numbers each month. Isn’t this the best working relationship two people ever had?
Remember there were only 36 special forces at Tora Bora.
How were we supposed to catch the bastard?

I agree with what has been posted so far, but want to add: Even if it was based on the Commission Report, ten years from now it will be clear even THAT was hopelessly biased in favor of the current administration. The emergence now of the Tora Bora video showing UBL/OBL escaping is a case in point. The 9/11 Commission was independent, but they were relying on information released to them by three branches of government controlled by one party, and an Executive operating largely according to a principle of omerta.
As a result, this documentary is the equivalent not just of a Fox News version of events, but a Rush Limbaugh embellishment of a Fox News take on the 9/11 events.

Why on earth does anyone regard the VP as a person whose opinions or statements have even one iota of credibility? The man has lied, and lied repeatedly, to the American people, and as far as I could tell from the MTP interview, sees no reason to stop now. I am not a person who ordinarily wishes bad things on people, but in a fit of extreme frustration and anger, I told my husband (the Republican) that it would not upset me to see a picture of Dick Cheney clutching his chest. I wish I could be a bigger person than that, but I have my limits; clearly I have had enough – more than enough – more that I, or anyone else, should have had to countenance or deal with.
Tom Kean’s performance on This Week called into question every decision, every statement and every opinion he made or uttered as part of the 9/11 Commmission. Where is Lee Hamilton, and why have we not heard from him?
I have not had time this morning to read the full WaPo article, but I can see from the front page of the paper (yes, I read it in hard copy, newsprint and all) that I have a lot of reading to do. I did, however start the article you referenced, Christy, snd I’ve decided I probably have to wait until later in the day, because I do not have the stomach for it without having a glass of wine first, and I can’t do that this early in the day.
But, that being said, how dare they? How dare they let this thing slide until elections are getting close? How dare they make speeches and go on talk shows and tout their accomplishments in fighting the Global War on Terror? How dare they keep talking about how Democrats are so weak on terror while they take their attention and assets away from the hunt for bin Laden?
I don’t have time this morning to completely go off the deep end on this, which is probably a good thing. My daugher and I are going to a Wedding Expo, which will give me an opportunity to focus on a wonderful thing that is happening in our family. Much better for the blood pressure, and for removing the scowl from my face.

Under the present regime (not incidentally installed under very suspicious circumstances in 2000) most of the media, like Fox, and ABC, etc. have basically been nationalized. Unions are virtually impotent (right to work). Corporate (big oil and the like) tows the Rove line. So does the MSM. The military does the dirty work in the Middle East, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Congress, the Supreme Court and Federal courts pretty much grovel and hew to the Republicans. Miranda is a dinosaur and has been rendered. Unless one is wealthy, you cannot get the best or for that matter even adequate legal representation available. Lobbyists and PAC’s lubricate the sleazy and corrupt government-big business machinery. What’s left? To consider ourselves ruled by fascism.
We may never know where the Bush gang’s bodies are buried. Kind of like Hoffa.
If ABC ever started telling the truth, they’d go out of business. And probably the CEO and many others would go to jail. What we have is a subversion of the First Amendment. Freedom of the press does not mean freedom to lie.
The scent of prevarication, oppression and repression is absolutely suffocating. We’re being had.
I saw an interesting bumper sticker the other day:
W.A.R. Want Another Republican??
The owner of the SUV is apparently a nearly diehard Democrat, by all the pro-Democrat stickers on the bumper/windows. The license plate was ‘URLGIRL’.
This morning’s news was interesting. The local news ran a disclaimer after stating the ‘controversial mini-series ‘Path to 9/11′ will air tonight do not reflect the opinions, or believes, of ABCNews, or TV9 News’. Also on GMA Weekend, the hosts also stated that the mini-series is a product of ABCNews Entertainment division, *not* ABCNews division. There was a subtle emphasis on the word ‘not’.

Cheney Ignores Senate Intel Report, Cites Zarqawi As Evidence of Iraq/Al Qaeda Connection
All the lawsuits, and threats of lawsuits, would not have stopped this showing. Because they do not care about what happens in courts LONG after the Nov. elections. This is about getting their base riled up and on board. This base will vote for Bush solely because they can blame clinton.
They are giving the base redmeat and will deal with consequences afterwards. Uh, does anyone here believe that there will be consequences, other than a blog uprising I mean. Will Clinton come out swinging? Doubt it. Will Albright come out swinging — I mean in tough take no ***language not those soft political tones she normally talks in. I doubt it.
Because the public is watching — if there is no follow through on this, they will assume it is the normal dems wimping out. Get all in an outrage and then when told to sit down, they do. No, I doubt after this movie showing, the political leaders will keep going at it.

Moreover, Zubaydah himself (or at least one of his three personalities) was found to be completely unreliable.

Well the disinformation continues. While having breakfast this AM, the Couier-Post (Gannet), a local fish wrapper and bird cage liner was sitting on the counter. I picked it up and in the Television section there is an article by Jacqueline Cutler @Zap2it with the title “The Path to 9/11″ Explains the How and Why of the Attacks.
Obviously this is syndicated.
The article states that both sides are to blame, yadda, yadda, and is the spin we’ve been hearing all along. It sites sources such such as 9/11 Commission, John Miller’s Book and The Relentless Pursuit. It also states there are compressions and composites, and then this gem “Otherwise, this is accurate, and goverment officals come off as inept. The film’s senior consultant, Thomas H. Kean, chair of the 9/11 Commission and former govenor of New Jersey, helped ensure the accuracy and is paniful aware of the official snafus.“
I went to Zap2it’s Web site and did a search by author and article name, and it’s not there.

Matt Stoller digs out the Truth –
Mickey Mouse’s Karl Rove, Zenia Mucha
So I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on at Disney. I’m still not sure why they are sticking with this right-wing propaganda piece, but it’s becoming a little clearer who has been ordering everyone to lie about it. Zenia Mucha is the EVP of Corporate Communications for Disney Corporation, in charge of all media relations, financial communications, employee communications, and corporate positioning. She is clearly a big part of how Disney handles sticky corporate situations, including the fights with Miramax over Fahrenheit 911, where she sparred with the Democratic Weinstein’s for six months in the press. …
Mucha was Eisner’s protege, not Iger’s. She came into Disney’s empire in 2001, recruited out of New York politics, where she had enormous power as advisor to a very detached Governor Pataki, who nicknamed her the ‘the Director of Revenge’. Before that, she was Communications Director for a very nasty and effective conservative Senator, Al D’Amato.
Eisner was a terrible CEO of the Magic kingdom, and he left behind a real mess. Wow.
Is the hoopla around ABC/Disney a Rovain trap?
Are we all reverting to “Where’s Osama?” and trail going “stone cold” just in time for GWB to announce that we’ve nabbed OBL tomorrow night?
That would be a nightmare scenario, IMHO.
Maybe what we need to do re this lie of a movie, is get some actors together and a video crew and shoot the “bush letting Osama go” scene and put in on YouTube. I bet there would be a huge number of downloads. We could flood every single media outlet with it, accompanied by a link to the specific facts of the report just released.
In the (paraphrased) last words of Joe Hill, “Don’t mourne, organize!”
Is it about time to actually have an organized boycott of ABC/Disney?
Any thoughts on how we put that together, in a way that they and their advertisers would recognize and fear?
Watching Cheney is, if anything, worse than watching Bush. Cheney doesn’t believe his lies. He knows he’s lying, and he wants his lies to be thought of as the truth. “I haven’t read the report.” Ha! His arrogance and contempt ooze out of every pore of his body.
I’m more convinced than ever that BushCo not only has manipulated al-Qaeda, but has actively provided them shelter and cooperated with them to ensure partisan political advantage.
Cheney sez, “inspectors were kicked out of Iraq”… I thought Bush took them out of there so he could bomb…?!?
When networks do “docudramas” they have standards and practices department that goes over this with fine tooth comb… what happened here? Who was doing the fact checking? Who looked over the script and approved stuff that never happened?
Sounds like a fair question to me. How do we make ABC answer it? Spotlight this article to some reporters?

I do not believe that Bushco is omnipotent (only EPU is). So many have internalized bush et al’s machiavelian spin so much that we scare ourselves with the mere fantasy of the brilliant political coup they will next pull off.
How many times have we heard, “They have Osama and are just waiting for the right time to bring him before the cameras.” We have certainly reached the “even a blind pig sometimes finds a truffle” stage. If it happens, it happens. It is just more evidence of five years of failure. Remember, Bin Laden is no big deal anymore. Didn’t the presidant say that?
If Bin Laden is ever caught, so the fuck what?

Doesn’t that clip of an Al Aqaida type firing at Clinton’s image on the TV contradict their own narrative? If Clinton was so inept and a coward as they seem to be saying, why was the Al Qaida so riled up against him?
I would sure like to know if that scene is also came from the fevered imagination of the makers of this mockumentary.
via aravosis
From a reader – I just tried the number it works:
The BBC charter dictates that they must log your complaint. You speak to a real person and they take down everything. I explained that 100 Brits died on 9/11, that it was unacceptable they were showing this film, and that they will get sued. She told me senior management had told the complaints desk to be ready for calls like mine. My point is, if we can get thousands to call the BBC they might drop it. We’ve still got 5 hours before it airs. If the BBC drop it, ABC are in trouble.
The number in the UK is 08700 100222
From the states you dial (011) 44 8700 100222
You press option two to complain.
The most complaints they ever got was 12,000. Let’s beat that goddamn record.
Possible talking points:
The film is riddled with errors and Disney/ABC have admitted as much. It is irresponsible for the BBC to be treating September 11 like some kind of cartoon or soap opera. 3,000 people died on that day, it’s only been five years. Can we please treat September 11 with the respect it deserves? The BBC should not be airing this defamatory, disrespectful television show.

Christy,

Do we need any more evidence that they only care about catching bin Laden when it’s an election year, and the rest of the time they’d rather have him on the loose as a boogeyman?
Okay — as a former prosecutor, I’m re-issuing the edict that drugs are not a topic for amusing discussion for me. Having seen far too many autopsy photos of drug-involved murders and all…and having had cop friends shot at…and the fact that they are illegal under current US laws. Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion.

Would that we could get rid of Bush the same way the Brits do with their ugly, truth twisting pols.
Well, the good thing about the BBC running this pos is that it’s a whole lot easier to sue for defamation and libel in the UK than it is here. The producers would have to prove what they show is factual, and we all know they can’t do that.

Alternate programming against the GOPumentary tonight is the second part of PBS’s three part special talking about the rebuilding of Manhatten after 9/11.
Or people in the DC area can come on over to my house tonight and watch/rewatch Fahrenheit 9/11.
Maybe I should better explain my above (109) so what if Bin Laden is caught comment.
of course, it would be a great thing, but Bin laden is no longer Al Queda. His capture is now as likely to come as a result of a rival trying to consolidate power in his hands as it is from clever intel that we develop. That is, in a nutshell, the Zarqawi story. Queda has grown way beyond Bin Laden. And although catching him will make for some great US feel good news specials and pundit high-fives it will not change our sorry place in the world one wit.
Sure, Bush will try to use it to make political hay. Of course he will. But he makes everything political and there is nothing that will stop him from trying. But that is different than sitting and fretting about how we will be slaughtered PR-wise when it happens. Why does everyone go all wobbly when they simply imagine the Bush team turning something to their political advantage. Are we all so PTSD that we can’t plan for and fight these rather obvious strategies? The way to do it with Bin Laden is to start telling the truth about his current role. Ameicans love the “One Key Man” theory of history — but it is never the truth. It wasn’t true about Saddam, nor is it about Kim Jong nor Ahmadinejad. And it is certainly not true about Bin Laden.
That is what people with a microphone should be saying — so that when that day comes (which I hope is soon) when Bin Laden is captured, there is more than one political spin about what it means.
Cheney and Bush to citizens everywhere: “Boo!”
Too many citizens: “Eeeeak! Help!!!”

Kerry had a number of such zingers in his speech yesterday. In one of his best, self-deprecating ones, he said of the President,
“No President should ever be for torture before he was against it.” That one got a standing O.
One additional bizarre aspect of ABC’s showing of their docu-drama is that the last hour will be interrupted by an address by Bush. The juxtoposition of that speech and the movie can only lend some misbegotten credibility to the fiction of the movie.
I like this idea, too, and I know that there’s some serious creative talent represented on this site….

I think you’re right on. But maybe the enormity of their manipulation will spoil some of the propaganda value. Look at the Nicoletti interview on Crooks and Liars– fits in with what Christy and others have said about law enforcement officials not seeking the limelight, but NOT LIKING any smears on their fellows who were busy protecting us. I’m quite sure they’ve realized they’ve put RGJoe in a quandary: by leaking Ned’s 1998 letter to the NYT, someone violated RGJoe’s Senate site’s own stated standards of privacy. This could put Lieberman — or the staffer — at significant risk, since the policy is stated on the official Senate website.
They can’t just scrub the complaints and discussion of the privacy violation, so they’ve scrubbed all comments, I bet.
Of course, it’s also entirely possible that their site’s been hacked. *g*
Just finished my morning newspapers- best piece was in the LA Times by Alan Wolfe titled “Wise up, voters”.
Wolfe is a political science prof at Boston College and is about to release a book called “Does American Democracy still work?”
In his column- Wolfe highlights the incredible ignorance of the american voter:
1) A majority of americans don’t know that the GOP controls both houses of congress.
2)60% of americans have no idea about what the Patriot Act is.
3) 70% of americans don’t know that congress passed a prescription drug benefit.
etc. etc.
Wolfe explores some of the old political science mythology about this ignorance (Voters have an inner sense for integrity even if they don’t know the facts, voters are able to vote intelligently by knowing whether their OWN situation has gotten better or worse- etc.) Wolfe rejects these theories as horse manure.
Wolfe then makes the point that back in the old days- when most politicians fought for the center, voter ignorance was less of a problem- because a centerist was going to get elected no matter what- now extremists are getting elected- and voter ignorance becomes deadly.
Great article!

Mr. Iger:
ABC/Disney has so far refused to pull or delay the impending broadcast of The Path to 9/11 until all of the documented factual inaccuracies have been addressed and corrected. Furthermore, you are either considering or have agreed to President Bush’s request for air time during the broadcast, making the entire production a free commercial for the Republican party in a transparent attempt to influence the November mid-term elections.
You have badly misjudged the depth of the commitment of those of us in your viewing audience who believe the (re-)writing of history should not be the province of partisans, and that the networks should not be the private tool of evangelistic neocons.
Therefore, beginning today, I and my family have elected to forever boycott all things ABC/Disney, as well as ABC’s local Denver affiliate, KMGH Channel 7.
As for this evening, we will, instead, watch Ted Koppel’s more accurate, balanced, and non-partisan debut on the Discovery Channel.

There’s only one serious question in this election year:
Can the Clusterfuckers pull the wool over the eyes of the gullible american voters yet again? If the answer is “yes”- then it spells the end of meaningful political dialogue. American politics will retreat into a kind of childish fiction- a video game- where both sides lie their assess off spinning incredible stories for nine year olds. Forget about the truth- it’s irrelevent.

Gee, sounds like that scene in the film, but of course the people involved are different.
This is standard GOP operating procedure right now, accuse their opponents of doing things that they’ve done. That way the less informed voter will say “Oh yeah, I heard something about that” and believe it, without realizing the facts have been twisted 180 degrees.

I agree with GSD and Rwcole above. I have often stated my (perhaps Polyanna-ish) opinion that on eo fthe great qualities of this nation is its ability to self correct. Very bad things have generally, in a wide arc, tended toward enlightenment and justice. Being a very optimistic person generally, I must say I never before have felt like I do now — that the whole experiment called the United States of America is in danger of capsizing.
I wouldn’t say that 2006 is the final tipping point, unless some Giulliani-like unconstitutional action to prevent elections in November is attempted by Bush. Then we will see of what stuff the people of this country are currently made.

Gooperism in the version advocated by the Clusterfuckers is opening the Pandora’s box of the American Psyche. We have been fighting our dark side for centuries- Greed, Rascism, Ubridled Aggression, Tribalism, Enmity for the “other”, these are all things that have been with us always and that responsible leaders have attempted to keep in the box. The Clusterfuckers say “Hey- there’s lots of stuff in that box that mean votes for us- so they rip it wide open and the shit keeps flyin out. Americans are told that they shouldn’t be embarassed by these things, they should glory in them.
It’s a new political movement- characterized by the dictatorship-not of the proletariat- but of the psychic cripples.
My prediction is that ABC’s going to say the answer to Christie’s question is “yes”, the movie does include the failure to catch bin Laden after Tora Bora. I have no source for this other than a hunch, but my bet is that they’re going to claim the scene where the Clinton administration lets bin Laden get away was “inspired by” the post-9/11 Tora Bora incident, but that they used “time compression” to move it back into the Clinton years for better dramatic effect.

If it’s good enough for the Dutch Broadcasters…
I complained to the BBC (via their web-based complaint form)re their shameful failure to cover the controversy adequately in their news pages. Their story didn’t go up until late Friday night, and only covered Clinton aides’ protests and ABC’s “it’s irresponsible to criticize when they can’t have seen the finished product” rejoinder. It didn’t mention the big petition, or ABC’s 11th-hour changes, or the historians’ letter of protest, or Harvey Keitel’s comments, or Bush’s request to interrupt the transmission with a speech of his own, or the wingnut connections of the miniseries’ writer and director, or even the fact that the BBC is broadcasting the show.
In their e-mailed reply (whose reply-to address turns out to be an autoresponder) the BBC failed to address my complaint: instead they sent what is obviously a standard reply suitable for the press and for anyone who objects in advance to the broadcast taking place:
This statement, which was surely prepared while the miniseries was undergoing its last minute edits, reveals more than the BBC perhaps intended, since the “Editorial Policy Team” must have viewed the Rush Limbaugh version, not the Rush Edit version.

are we running mental institution gulags now? why do I feel the shadow of the hard line Soviets here?
Re Cheney on MTP, I noticed that his response to his role in the Libby trial has progressed. A couple months ago when John King of CNN asked him, “if asked to testify in the Libby trial, would you do so?” Cheney responded “I don’t respond to hypotheticals.” Today, in his duck and weave, he said to Russert “there is going to be a trial next year, and it is likely I will be asked to testify.” No response to questions pertaining to pardons of course.

Suurre. I don’t think I believe it. I feel like i am getting a whiplash.
Awful revelation, Christy. Thanks! For $40 mill they could’ve worked in a from-behind shot of a lanky guy on horseback against the mountains.
Curiouser and curiouser.
FWIW, I think it began with incompetence, transitioned into a frantic balance sheet calculus (including monetizations of Repug political goodies now on the line), and ended in a half-assed compromise among corporate factions, after a groupthink skull session, with frequent trips to the exec washroom, in which no one in authority had the guts to lop off a head or two and cut their losses.
It sure is a puzzle why the lawyers didn’t get to the problem from frame one. The Zenia Mucha factor may help explain it. So would the Eisner-Iger transition: Iger’s people may have assumed the eagles were “on it” (as Ricerella puts it in PT911). As we know from the run-up to 9/11, regime change takes its toll.
Matt Stoller’s post on HuffPo runs along these lines. When I wrote Iger I gave him the benefit of the doubt and appealed to his better instincts. Silly me! But they’ll pay for this in ways they can’t quite see yet.
On the half-assedness: The NZ program still leaves Diz-ABC open to a defamation suit. (On this see The Crusty Bunker on DKos.) My take here: the political goodies were too good to turn down. CB envisions upwards of $100 mill to Bill for defamation damages. I can’t see Disney factoring a number that huge into their calculus.
Will The Iger Sanctions be an FDL Films production?

The Clusterfuckers are in a bit of a bind- and are in danger of losing at least one house of congress. What to do? Well- fortunately- it’s their last election- so they can write all the checks they want on their zero balance credibility account. After November- when the public lears that the checks all bounce- it will be too late- and the greater gooper party will figure out a way to forget about em entirely when 08 rolls around.
Stupid american voters will say : “Well yeah- Bush lied- but now we’ve got McCain (or whoever) who always tells the truth”
I tend to believe this is a Rovian ploy – distraction. They know they are going to lose this election IF it is a fair one. Too many groups of voters (ie. Security Moms, etc.) are going to vote Dem this time, thus the admitted tactic of running attack ads. We need to keep our eyes on the election and who’s counting the votes. If they steal this one the country as we know it gone, fini, over.
Now, what to do about my family’s planned trip to Disney this winter…

because it doesn’t pass the smell test.
Some voters are quite proud of being ignorant of current affairs. We have too long taken it for granted we will survive whether informed or not. And there’s Rasputin Rove coming out of the shadows with the opportunity to prove us all wrong about self-correction. So many negatives have come together at one time–Rove, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Right-wingers, apathetic and incompetent elected officials, uninformed voters, a partisan Press, terrorists, and more. Who, me worry? You betcha I’m worried. And there’s no place to go if things remain the same after November. This is ultraserious business, folks.

It gets weirder. Her father is John Lindauer who ran as a Republican for Governor of Alaska in 1998. He ran ads slamming VECO, the oil services company currently under investigation. He was forced to drop out after it was revealed his wife provided a lot of the money for his campaign, but it wasn’t reported properly.
I got the impression the R’s didn’t like his ads or campaign.

Part of our problem is that the Iranians, the Palestinians, Al Queda, et al need to have the neo cons left in power in Washington. They are thriving politically at the expense of the US under the Clusterfucks. They will go out of their way to make sure that sanity does not overcome the White House- so far they are on safe ground.

Why is that GOP-u-drama still going on ABC after calls from thousands of Americans, including both Republican and Democrats, our former President and members of congress, that This film is untrue, a painful insult against those who lost the most on 9/11 and that it should be pulled from the airways? Is it because our president sees it as a sort of photo-op – After all, PT-9/11 is just as phony as all the other backdrops for his speeches. He’s scheduled his speech in the middle of this so-called docudrama. Do any of us really think that wasn’t planned in advance or that ABC really has any control over pulling it off the air?

My favorite Martha Mitchell quote, when asked her opinion as she left the theatre after seeing something quite forgettable on stage:
“Don’t miss it if you can!”
No one was sure exactly what Martha meant, but I still use this line, especially after seeing a production I’m unfond of that involves friends — people are quite flummoxed to hear it, especially when I say it with a big smile, as Martha did….

But this is classicly Rovian, you see.
Rove attacks his opponents’ strengths, especially where his own man is weak. For instance, when it became clear that Bush’s connections got him a spot in the Texas ANG and that he didn’t fulfill his commitment, Rove had surrogates attack Kerry, the decorated war hero, as a coward and a fraud. See also the current rhetorical attack on “fascism.”
Now, confronted with the clear fact that Bush let OBL get away in Tora Bora, and withdrew assets which might have caught him, Rove has surrogates attack Clinton for what? Why, for letting OBL get away, of course.
RULE OF THUMB: If Rove is attacking, look for his own side to be guilty of what he’s accusing others of doing.

Dunno. I’d say he’s been a first-class prick all his life. It was one of his college roommates who said that Big Time was “the least empathetic person” he’d ever known. As I recall, he and Rumsfeld were up to no good even then–they were both looking for ways to gut the EOC–and it was Nixon who made Rumsfeld his representative to NATO to get him (and possibly both of them) out of the White House (according to John Dean, here).
It was probably Cheney who cost Ford the election. The best thing I’ve seen on Cheney’s overall background is here.
He’s always had an ability to cause a lot of damage around him.

And then again, maybe they can’t catch him because he’s been dead for two years. I’m sorry, do you know for a fact that there is a Bin Laden, other than what you see on Television, which, according to the very latest software can be manipulated in ways no one ever dreamed possible. Just watch some of the car commercials. Those cars, and some of those “people” aren’t real. I’m just sayin. You want to laugh, go ahead.
Conspiracy theory? What if it’s true?
We progressives should not overreach on ABC’s movie-Note inaccuracies, note flagrant political agendas of participants, note disrespect for the gravity of 9/11, put Mickey ears on Bush, Rove, Atta, but THIS MOVIE WILL SINK OF ITS OWN WEIGHT and the participants will be laughing stock of the entire industry! This time the wingnuts have gone too far. This movie is a gift to the Clintons and the Clinton adminstration. This movie is evidence of inept movie-making and of THE VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY so denied by the wingnuts for years. When Goerge Bush gives his 5th anniversary 9/11 address to the nation during part 2 of this movie, he participates in this disastrous movie. JUST LET IT HAPPEN and watch the fallout. The participants/supporters in this travesty have been revealed and their names are known. David Cunningham will not be in great demand as director for new projects. Norasteh will not be contracted to write scripts. Murty, Apuzzo, Horowitz will not get many movie promotion gigs. Damato’s & Pataki’s communications “revenger” will be fired from ABC. Other heads will fall at ABC. The Christian Evangelical group YWAM’S THE FILM INSTITUTE’S doozy of its UNTITLED HISTORY PROJECT which morphed into ABC’S HISTORY PROJECT which morphed into THE PATH TO 9/11 will ruin them all, as well it should.
Now lete’s get back to electing Democrats in November.
I said years ago and I’ll say it again. Bin Laden could well be long dead, a victim of CIA planners. Or hiding in Cheney’s “undisclosed location”, or an eternal prisoner in one of Bushco’s secret black bag torture sites. Either way he’s the best thing to happen to Neo-cons since plastic love dolls.

OPRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will her fabulousness take kindly to this smear against her good friends?
Will she take kindly to a decrease in viewership?
Has ANYONE asked her?
Tora Bora? What about this? In early Oct. ‘01 al Quaeda officials, threatened by an American attack on Afghanistan, offered Bush to extradite bin Laden out of Afghanistan to a neutral nation. Bush’s reply? “They’re not sincere.” End of story.
Given that the bin Laden family has close ties to Bush Sr. through The Carlyle Group is it possible that Osama, the “black sheep” isn’t that black afterall? Requires no stretch of the imagination to believe Osama not only hasn’t been captured, he’s being given protection. This is big-time international intrigue involving big players, big money, and big cover-ups.
First, I apologize for not reading through all the 283 comments, but to be technical, PT9/11, as the title implies, only covers the path to 9/11… so the Bushie’s letting Osama slip out of Tora Bora would not be covered. Save that for a completely new docudrama wherein Hillary Clinton is depicted urging Rumsfeld not to send troops to finish the job.
BTW, did anybody see the piece on NBC regarding the flight controllers? They pretty much white-washed that story in stark contrast to the damning documentary “On Native Soil”.
bin Laden is dead. He died in 2002. He has not appeared in any videotapes since.
His second in command is supposed to be in hiding alongside him. So how come we get a constant stream of current videotapes featuring that guy, but none of OBL?
Both sides of the political aisle reap benefits by assuming OBL is still alive.
One of my freinds is CIA retired…. he was in Afghanistan at Tora Bora. He was pulled out overnight to go to Iraq. He called one night scared to death when Plame’s name came out… He was put back in Afghanistan….. then on the Pak border where they “lost” BinLaden…. all he really says about it is this…… ” Bush wanted this for the elections”….. so remember Bush likes chaos and requires it to be elected. Must be that old distraction thing that works for him. My freind got stop lossed for over a year too. He’s out now and has totally lost it. He’s bout hooked on nose candy and says… how do you think we stay up for days on end…..
Why do I get the feeling that this “The Path to 9/11″ SEPTEMBER surprise is just a prelude to whatever OCTOBER surprise the Republicans behind this fraud-filled, fact-challenged production have planned?
Apparently the people perpetrating this hoax on America (and the world) cut numerous corners to get this spurious miniseries aired, in September, before October, and before the November elections. Someone put up $40 million to have this smear job made and they are demanding that it air, come hell or high water.
This is what makes me think that this is just a prelude to these same people dropping an October surprise on everyone. Then the shadow people behind this September “plant”, in late October, can point back to this ABC miniseries and say, “look, look, it’s all Bill Clintons fault…again. So, vote for Republicans next week because we can only be trusted with America’s national security.”
It’s all a con job…a conservative Republican con job.
Hehe – never seen so many panties in a twist over a stupid tv movie. Republicans are used to being made to look bad in movies, so now you get a chance. Don’t worry, it won’t happen often and it’s good for the character – toughens you up.
There is not just the bungled job at Tora Bora.
There is the August 6, 2001 PDB warning “Bin Laden determined to strike inside US”. That PDB even listed hijacking as one of the likely targets for the attack, yet airports were not made privy of this very real threat.
Lastly, there is the Hart-Rudman Commission report that had many recommendations for beefing up security against possible terrorist attacks, focusing on public transportation. Not one single recommendation from that report had been acted upon. Rather than act upon anything “Clinton” they decided to do an inhouse study. The inhouse study results were put on Bush’s desk on September 10, 2001.
With this as a background, how can anybody be surprised that Bush would do exactly the wrong thing at Tora Bora.
I didn’t watch the movie. Did it include the cruise missile attack launched by Clinton which nearly killed bin Laden and did kill a large number of AQ?
Sir, I thank you for remembering, in the very last paragraph of your huge post, that 2,996 people died five years ago today
