So when will we see the Twin Towering Infernos theme ride at Disney? ABC/Disney obviously invests heaviliy in the notion that fantasy trumps reality. That’s why this "Path to 9/11" fiasco came from a wingnut cabal through the entertainment division, without involvement of the news division. Though I can’t say I’m confident any involvement by the authors of The Note would have made any difference, given how eager Disney is to flout its own published business ethical policies. My guess is the following "Official True Story" lying theme park fantasyland bullshit really lights up their plethysmographs over at The Note:
Well, there’s the Disney fantasy, and then there’s the reality:

Mickey has been stinking like a bad, old diaper for a long time, and we’ve been too focused on the fantasy Disney sells to notice. Those days are over. And just for shits and giggles, let’s look at when ABC News spiked a story about Disney’s pedophile problems. No doubt the Clenis was more important to fondle back in those days (1998):
The December-January issue of Brill’s Content has a detailed report by Elizabeth Stevens on this story and why it was killed. Inspired by a book titled Disney: The Mouse Betrayed, by Peter and Rochelle Schweizer, the story was the work of ABC’s veteran investigative reporter Brian Ross. It had been approved by high-level news executives and ABC’s lawyers. Stevens says it was "well-sourced" and that it "met the standards of fairness and reportorial backup commonly found in investigative television-news magazine pieces." According to Stevens, the four-month investigation by Ross and his producer, Rhonda Schwartz, turned up new evidence showing that Disney had a worse pedophile problem than the other theme parks that were examined. Disney also had a bad reputation among Florida law-enforcement officials, who were critical of Disney’s failure to run criminal-background checks of new employees and not always assisting their investigations of crimes on Disney property.
Ross’s story told of a 7-year-old British girl who recently was molested by Jeffrey Bise, a puppet vendor at Disney World. The girl’s uncle, a British police officer, confronted Bise and reported the incident to Disney security, who filled out a report and gave the family a few cheap souvenirs. They tried to dissuade the uncle from calling the police. He called them. They came, questioned Bise and got his confession. He is now in prison, no thanks to Disney.
I have frequently taken part in conference calls with DC Democrats where I and others have pleaded with big names to join us in bashing the establishment media for its right wing bias. These media conglomerates are not our friends; they’re selling lies. We need to point this out and campaign openly, jointly against establishment media conglomerates, we’ve argued.
We never got anywhere. But now ABC and Disney have managed to get the big name Dems on Capitol Hill, Bill Clinton, the netroots and the grassroots all working together to expose the right wing bias of establishment media. I really want to thank ABC/Disney for that.
They’ve not only done a good bit to help us further our development as a movement, they’s put some things on the table that were not getting enough attention, like the so-called broadcast flag, copyright overprotection for Mickey Mouse and media consolidation itself. With Democrats on a path to gain potential control of one or both houses of Congress, I want to thank Disney for helping us to accomplish what could otherwise have been an uphill slog toward getting Democrats on the Hill to give real consideration to these issues, even to hold hearings. Oh, and let’s go after the broadcast licenses of local ABC affiliates. Hey, politics is local.

Meanwhile, they’ve done their deliberating about this weekend’s historical fraud at ABC/Disney, and have apparently concluded, at the time of this writing, to stick to their Lugers and run the damn thing. Such is life in the bunker. Oddly enough, I’ve obtained a snapshot from the meeting:

How comforting to see Walt Disney’s spirit alive and well. That’s Bob Iger in the middle.
By the way, I stayed at the Boardwalk hotel at Disneyworld this past year to attend a conference. I found it to be a cheesy, charmless dump, crass in the extreme. My room abutted the elevator shaft and I could hear elevator noise all night long (thoughtfully, the bed had been placed with its headboard up against the elevator shaft wall, though the noise was just as noxious on the other side of the room). My in-room Internet access plug was busted and technical assistance to my room could not fix it, so I had to sit in the lobby and pay for extra wireless access on my laptop to get any work done. There are far better vacation options for families out there, so save yourself some gas money and visit a national or state park closer to home: teach your kids about nature and conservation.
Meanwhile, I expect Disney and ABC will be in our sights for a looooong time.
Update: Roger Ailes had this title in a post before I did, though I had not seen it. Still, I got an email this past week with the line in it, probably in reference to Roger’s post. Please go check out what Roger has to say!

LOL No doubt
love the snapshot!
Hey gang. Can you feel the love tonight?
Pach!
Pach … way to go!
Dang Teddy, you’re fast on that edit button.
oh, ABC brass is having a Very Bad Weekend!

Good evening, Pach!
So–the little Nazi kids in leiderhosen–what the hell is that from? That’s goddamned creepy.
There are nice parts of Orlando, but that Boardwalk hotel is not apparently one of them. That whole part of town is kind of nightmarish.
For those of you who need
S’up, Coz.
I’ll bet Karl Rove never bargained for what he’s getting right now. I’ll even bet George Bush is crying in his lap. I’m sure this was a deliberate act by the right wing, and all of the players have yet to come out of the woodwork but I will bet they are they going to owe a lot of money when this is done. Richard Mellon Scaife welcome to Goodwill Industries, they’ll make you right at home.
Pach! That was a great up-to-the-minute summary. The graphics kick.
they haven’t always been wicked:

Sorry/OT but the local news just did a story on 9/11 “Anniversary” and Shrub’s visit — they won’t give out his iternary.
I am so livid he’s coming here to make political hay from this. It infuriated me when they held their convention here (at MSG, because apparently they couldn’t get it right on the site), but 9/11 was and is a very personal day here and it disgusting that he is setting the stage to unroll the Repug’s latest campaign. I wonder if he will be able to keep himself from smiling and smirking.
Sorry, I needed to vent.
Lederhosen 2 days in a row!

OT – and this may have been covered earlier… via Pam’s House Blend, Bill Clinton’s attorney sent another letter to ABC and he is pissed:
Bill Clinton’s legal eagles sent a second letter to ABC’s Bob Iger, and outlined that they aren’t playing games, and as asking for the film to be pulled.

I have to again mention GSD and his reference to the Disney classic “The Triumph of the Swill”. Mickey, Leni’s illegimate maus, is the producer.
I’ve had to work in Disney complexes more than once. Within 24 hours, everyone on the crew knows that furry rodent ain’t no cute little mouse, it’s an evil black rat.
In my emails to Disney I admit that my three kids are Disney stock owners. Years ago they bought one share of stock with their savings, joining the Disney Dividend reinvestment program and now own three shares of stock. My kids saved their allowance to buy stock as an investment, learning about economics and in a fact the paper stock is really pretty with pictures of Disney characters.
Today the lesson my kids are learning is how a corporation is perverting history for an administration that is screwing them out of their future.
I have read of people who will watch football instead of PT911 but just a reminder that ESPN is a Disney subsidiary. Monday will be ESPN’s first Monday night football with a double header with the DC & Oakland games.
lina @ 17
Lina, I know, and that’s what distresses me most about this monstrous betrayal. And it is monstrous.
And by the way, the ramp up to Monday has begun on different channels. There’ve already been specials about the engineering of the Twin towers, and interviews etc. I’ve had to keep changing the channel since it’s still to raw to even listen to it.
It’s been quite the experience watching the pushback campaign unfold this week. I was too busy with other stuff to do any political writing; I’ve written nothing since a week ago tonight. I had to join in the brand destruction party, and it’s all about the images, really.
Oh, and I had not seen anyone else snoop out the old pedophile problem story, though it may have resurfaced somewhere this week. Another fine story about ABC News. How quaint the script to The Insider looks these days.
I’m trying to imagine being John and Suzy Wingnut, watching The Path for hours and hours, getting my USA history lesson, and then – boom! – the preznit comes on to say, “terra – terra – 9/11 – 9/11 – deciderering – understandering – stayin’ the fuckin’ course – vote for me – blah – blah – blerg – blerggggg” ……and then back to regularly scheduled surreal indoctrination programming. Surreal.
This is America, 2006, right?
Uptownchick @ 18
Following up on what I think was your comment in an earlier thread, what if there was a silent protest at ground zero on Monday where people carried signs that read Prayers Not Politics on Hallowed Ground.
The worst sound in the world first thing in the morning is the freaking Mouse “Rise and Shine! It’s a beautiful day”
If you have the misfortune of staying at a Disney hotel, take your own alarm, DO NOT request a wake up call.
As for the US media, I lost all faith in the first months in Iraq.
Even NPR were cheerleaders.
None of this week’s “revelations”
No link between Al Quaida and Sadaam (Doh – Iraq was a secular state. Repressive of dissent, but relativly progressive in regards to religion and womens’ rights.
No WMD. Of course not. And Ambasador Wilson’s findings were published in overseas press – just ignored here. I recall reading post SOTU quote from soem intelligence official the weel afterwards to the tune of “I can’t beleive they’re trotting out *that* shaggy dog story”
The camera based assasination. I read about that at least 2 years ago.
The press used to put these things together for us. Now they are stenographers (and not even especially good ones).
So we have the Janes and Christys and Duncans and Marcies to put all the pieces together for us. But what doe the people who actually get paid for analysis do? Suck up.
Actually, it is no surprise that the Disney org, even without Walt, would pull a stunt like this. Walt was such a right winger that none other than J. Edgar Hoover made Walt an honorary FBI agent. Walt was very proud of that. I know nothing about the organization now, but I studied film under one of the animators who led the strike at Disney in order to form the Cartoonists union. His name was David Hilberman, and he was subsequently blacklisted in Hollywood….which didn’t stop him, but that is another story. Hollywood has cooperated with the government in power for quite some time….and, I expect, it pays very well.
A diary at Kos has some footage from Path to 9/11. I can’t view it from my computer, but all the comments suggest it is as bad if not worse than expected. A total hit piece against Clinton. I have included a link below. Go take a look, and if you know any way to email the link to Clinton, Albright et al and their legal teams, please, by all means get this footage to them ASAP! Thanks.

We were led to believe that the Berger scene was (first) a composite, then (second) an improvisation. Now, from Aravosis’ peek, we learn it’s the key concluding scene of Part One.
Perhaps the plan is to air Part One, libeling Clinton and his dedicated public servants, and then — faced with worldwide outrage — CANCEL Part Two? Thus never having to show any scenes critical of BushCo, which may not exist at all?
Is this the reason Bush planned his speech for Monday night — since there would be no Part Two to interrupt?
Finally, where are the promotions for the mini-series?
Pachacutec @ 25
It has been amazing to see.
This is really key and Disney is fantactical about protecting their image, esp Mickey.
For Disney’s sake, I hope David Cunningham and friends are cranking up the Rosaries and belting out some extra Hail Mary’s to save The Mouse’s ass after this proaganda is catapaulted. While they’re at it might want to fill up the tub with Holy Water and take a bath. Then, maybe Grover Norquist can stop by and drown the GAO in it. They’re so pesky!

He has every right to be!
Have you guys seen the 6 clips available?
I only made it thru’ 4 before leaving in disgust. 3 out of the 4 clips I did see, they pretty much portrayed Clinton totally absorbed by the Lewinski affair.
TeddySanFran @ 31
He’s heard of it by now… Just waiting to see if we hear anything public from him…
Has anybody else read The Disney Version? Forgot the author’s name. Depressing.
Oh, and s’up y’all.
There is a book called “The Disney Version,” the author of whom I forget, but with google, type in the title and Amazon probably has one. It outlines what a really dirty player Disney has been during the past 50 years. If they are gay friendly, well, good for them, but they are not a very patriotic organization, and never have been! Of course, neither was Jack Warner, but there was a lot of money in that, and they were trying to do something quite different.
xyz, Pach has the footage promo above.
EPU’d:
If you watch this European trailer for Pt911, you will see that Clinton, Albright, and Berger will soon be the proud owners of Iger, et al. You really couldn’t ask for a more blatant case of defamation, slander, libel. Doesn’t matter what the movie tries to be, the advertisement for it is a complete and boldface misrepresentation of the truth.
hey, Tommy!
“By the way, I stayed at the Boardwalk hotel at Disneyworld this past year to attend a conference.”
Never been to either D’land and D’world, which just have always seemed to me to be among the most inviting terror targets in the US.
A cynical aside.
2004 Republican GOTV centered around homophobia.
So long as Americans vote from fear of ‘the other’, be it same sex marriage or hispanics, our only hope for correction is that the number of deaths and decimation of the economy is so bad as to hit home in every homophobic bigots heart.
It depresses me how far our country has sunk over the past 6 years. It depresses me more to think that we may not have found bottom yet.
There are indications that the tide may have turned, but so much harm has been done based on what should have been transparent lies,,, I just do not know.

Hey Tommy-
OT BTW, I pestered the Rowley campaign to get Coleen to appear on Howie’s Blue America, and got a thank you phone call from a staffer. I called him back, and had a really long conversation with him (me talking mostly) saying how important it was for the campaign to continue to connect with the internets AND put out videos via YouTube and such. SO, I was quite gratified to see the Rowley version of Have you had enough. What news on that front, generally?
Hey OC!
Don’t know how many of y’all read AmericaBlog, but Avarosis is on fire with this, promising a veritable buffet of punishment if they air this piece of shit.
I brought this up at the end of Jennifer’s thread… and it’s not irascible but a little thought provoking.
Steve Jobs has quite the illusion going, doesn’t he?
He’s still replaying that incoherent 1984 spot in his narcissistic thoughts… which certainly goes nicely with his Foxconn sweatshops abroad.
Now… will Apple Spokesmodel Bob Dylan be downloading “The Path to 9/11″ on his super new updated 5G Video iPod as he pitches away for iTunes?
And will Bono and the Edge watch theirs on their ever so slightly less new Special Edition U2 Video iPod?
All Jobs does is take ersatz psychedelic imagery and sell his hardware drug which creates a perfect state of insular self-involvement.
I know. I’m a customer. And I’m gonna have to kick the habit, even though it’s going to make chemo a good deal more present that ever so nicely distant.
So what are we going to do with all our favorites? Can we dare to interrupt Mister Bono’s Breakfast With Buffett to ask him if truth and democracy matter as much to him as, say his self-love does?
Real inneresting stuff, kids.

I’ll make my Mortgage Moms point here again, then: ABC/Disney/Rove are planning not to reach Dad in the barcalounger, with beer and snax, but Mom in the playroom helping the kids with homework on Sunday nite, balancing the checkbook, worried about… what to worry about. And, suddenly, there’s Clinton to worry about! Right on ABC!
OldCoastie @ 49
Dem bloggers is evildoers heh heh heh
VG – the first Had Enough video was actually done by a Rowley supporter and we’re mentioning it in all the press releases. It really gets a good reaction!
John at Americablog has some steps to take on Tuesday. Disney and ABC need a serious slap.
Remember this, that film, with only two day TV showings, is going into American classrooms thanks to Scholastic and Disney.
Are we going to allow this to happen? The Republicans have gone too far when they target children.
we are getting ready to put in for a grant to upgrade our computers in our lab (Macs)… the school district would prefer to deal only with PCs and I’ve had to fight like cats and dogs to push for the Macs… Jobs better get off his ass, or he’s going to lose another account…
It really does make sense for parents to call their kids schools and ask if this tripe is being used as part of the lesson plans – that’s the most direct way to stop the propaganda.
Valley Girl @ 52
I wish I could tell you. Howie is unique in my business ’cause he’s the only suit I’ve ever met who doesn’t serve up a plate full of maybe’s.*
Maddow wants us on, we’re prepared to do tv, but have heard no offers. Howie occasionally surfaces and hints at something big. No idea.
*howie’s not really a suit. used to be. cooler than all other suits combined, past or present.

They have already targeted children in far more dire and death-tinged ways with their policies against stem cell research.

European trailer? LOL. What did they imagine they might achieve by airing this tripe in Europe. Jeez…
Howie certainly is unique … what a wonderful guy!
Didn’t Scholastic bail on this turkey? I mean, their press release about it was bullshit CYA stuff, but I at least thought they pulled out.
katymine @ 45
The news that’s being drowned out? How about the fact that OBL is alive and at large and the trail is stone cold according to our own forces in the know. How about the fact that the Iraqi War has consumed the lives of neary 2700 US troops — almost as many people as died in the WTC attack.
Thanks for the correct spelling on the ples. . . the plasy. . . the p*nis thing.

Isn’t Al Gore on Apple’s Board of Directors? You’d hope he made a call to Steve.
To anyone who has the ear of the Lamont campaign:
Has anyone seriously checked on this? Jumpin’ Joe’s “blog” the other day had a post by a Todd Stein, who is also listed as a staffer for Loserman’s D.C. office. So What? Well, recently there have been some state legislators sent to prison for having staffers, paid by taxpayer dollars, also work on political campaigns. Not a legal person, but if this is what has happened with Todd Stein, could Loserman face a similar fate? Just thought it would be worth a look-see. Here’s some precedent:

Jobs is a hardware guy, period.
His belief has been that the iPods would lead consumers to live in a world of semi-matte white zen-like Apple objects.
So far… they like the iPods.
I’d say that Bill Gates whose products are sub-mediocre compared to Jobs and who travels Africa village by village to reverse the rise of AIDS has a lot more to offer the world than low-fi downloads.
completely OT but did folks see that (can’t believe I’m typing this) Brad and Angela won’t marry until *everyone* is allowed to marry?
made me smile when I saw that on the crawl
I agree, the ABCDisney revisionist propaganda scandal is a real opportunity. I think there’s momentum for reform of FCC regulations for broadcast licensing.
Corporate teevee is crippling our democracy in other ways besides misleading the electorate.
Politicians take bribes from corporations to pay for media access just to get reelected so they can continue taking bribes.
I’m for the idea of public financing of campaigns but not if our money just gets sucked up by corporate media for airtime to play psyops on the electorate.
I think broadcast licenses should be granted with the provision that the broadcasters budget free airtime for political candidates.
We need to rework the nervous system of our democracy so the truth has a better chance.
Siun @ 55
Thanks Siun! Can I break my arm patting myself on the back? I can’t take credit for them using the Had Enough song, but I’d like to think that my insistent message about NETROOTS, and give us some video and it will be publicized by the netroots was helpful. My first “contact” with Coleen Rowley came about over a year ago, after I heard an interview she did at Brad Blog. I emailed her and she responded- we exchanged several emails. You never know what small seeds of activism will pay off, I say!!!

yep and I almost stood up and cheered… being so high profile and appearing on the entertainment shows nightly – that’s a bold statement and nice to hear…
VG – I’m always amazed at how the nudges often lead to progress.
I do know that Howie is happy with the progress so far – and he sure has a lot of plans in the works.
I’m chatting with a friend to do some radio work on Had Enough and the song and idea is definitely spreading.
Tommy- thanks for the update plus. FDL is such a wonderful place! I can’t imagine how I would have met you otherwise, but it’s been a pleasure.
I can’t remember what names Walt Disney called the great Walt Kelly.
But I do know that he would yell at Chuck Jones that he was “a big pink lumberjack commie”.
Plus… the only reason Fantasia came to be is that for once the two men who no one would sit with in all of Hollywood happened to be in Chasins at the same moment… Stokowski and Disney.
And out of desperation joined each other.
By the way… both Kelly and Jones separately avowed that Disney did walk around in housedresses.
And that the one-eyed alien in Lilo and Stitch — created by two truly gifted gay writer/director/actors — wore those as homage to Unka Walt.

I am the person who discovered and posted the Stein/staffer info on the Joe Blog.
On personal time or on vacation time, a staffer may work in a political campaign. Happens all the time. Perfectly legal. Expected too! No problem.
Of course, the campaign work is not to be done on government time or equipment!

Too bad about the FCC, the SEC, congressional oversight, corporations having individual’s rights, Clear Channel’s monopoly, NPRs pants-wetting and general hegemony. And all that other stuff that got us into this fix.
So when will we see the Twin Towering Infernos theme ride at Disney? Nicely said.

While I never tire of being cynical about the malleability of the American mind when it comes to cheap political stunts, the coming Republican onslaught may be the classic case of overplaying ones hand.
Sure, they screwed up on 9/11 and they have botched the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and have alienated most of the world and have ruined New Orleans and Social Security and everything else…now they want the nation to sit through the worst politcal smear campaign in history.

Can’t remember where I heard it, but almost every Disney short created while he was at the helm had some reference to spanking and/or anal penetration. Funny how much you notice it when you know to look for it.
Would make a great YouTube montage. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Get even check out The Path To Mickey on youtube
Oh… for anyone with an iPod… I can’t recommend e-music.com enough.
No DRM, astonishing selection of non-corporate music and actually cheap prices.

I keep thinking I saw Disney Satyricon (”Even Pluto joins the action with his tail!”), A Clockwork Mouse (”There I was, me and my droogs, Pluto, Donald and Goofy — Goofy being very Goofy…” and, of course, Last Tango In Anaheim (Mickey in the Brando part — and raincoat — under the Anaheim monorail with his hands over his ears, screaming “FUCKIN’ DISNEY!”) at midnight showings in the early seventies.
GSD or Teddy San Fran – Have you heard back from your emails to American Airlines yet (other than the message that they were too busy to respond?).
So, shall we start a betting pool as to whether or not ABC will pull “Path to 9/11″ at the eleventh hour?

TRex, I’m beginning to suspect it will indeed be yanked in the USA — the lack of promos is glaring !
Hey Siun-
about that longer conversation I had with the Rowley staffer- he said something to the effect like, oh, wow, when we told people that Howie Klein wanted to have Coleen on Blue America, THEY said oh wow, Howie Klein!!! The Reprise guy! And we didn’t even realize who he was!!!
No harm meant on that one, it’s just to say that there is still plenty of room for the netroots to expand the message!!!
*ilson46201 @ 84
Thanks for that. In the cases I linked to, I wonder how they proved the work was done on “company time,” so to speak? Seems without an inside whistleblower saying Mr. Stein wrote this while on the clock, probably be hard to prove, huh? Oh well, wasn’t sure how much attention this got, and wanted to make sure it didn’t go unnoticed. BTW, the JoeBlog certainly has turned into quite the entertainment center!
ooo … a betting pool!
$25 to Blue America that they pull it at the last minute!

That’s logical.
But they may have decided to both a) not promote to reduce — ha — the level of anger and criticism and b) not pull so they can continue preaching to the same old choir.

I think at the very least, pulling it is certainly still on the table… not a peep out here on the west coast either…

the lawyers and accountants must be having strokes! (and just think, no revenue either!)
I say they’re gonna yank it, but slime the issue by saying that the objections have been vociferous, but partisan, and since we don’t want to deal with partisan issues, as we are completely a non-partisan purveyor of truth, we are taking the high road on this one.
By the way… I had to watch Into The West for professional reasons.
Which was Cyrus The Grating’ss previous big deal.
Now Spielberg is generally the one to go to to not do TV right.
But this Cyrus fella’s horrible writing puts every audience to sleep.
I don’t think a major audience will stick with it for terribly long.
And a lot of the political fan base will either channel surf or claim that they saw it but it was too moving, too powerful to discuss.

I think that’s an excellent idea, but I bet the secret service clears it out if it happens…that is, unless all of new york turns out to guard the ground.
saving face has a lot of downside… you think Disney has that much pride? or stubborness?
Matt Eggboy Drudge is showing his creepy fetishes again. He’s been running a picture of a “slick” lawyers alligator shoes for most of the day.

Sucks to say it, but if it doesn’t run it will be because of potential litigation. That’s why American Airlines needs to pipe up on this.
Clinton’s making it pretty clear.
I don’t think they’ll pull it, but I would love to be proven wrong.
Again… I think Disney was the beard for this one.
The money is essentially political infomercial money… and if it doesn’t air… it will have circulated enough… just like all these ultra right PAC/527 swiftboat spots and docs which NEVER pay to go on the air… but are shown endlessly on broadcast and cable news.
And no one knows if the budget is anywhere near as high as they’ve been claiming.
I don’t know. It seems inconceivable to me that they are going to pull it. Their silence = mission accomplished. And, at this point, they don’t need to advertise. I really hope I’m wrong.
I suspect Disney/ABC has about 6 or so different edit teams on it starting from scratch, with the daily rushes. Tick, tock, tick, tock…. best version wins or they pull it. Disney/ABC’s ass is on the line and they know it.

if it airs, can we call it the Iger Sanction?
This is OT, but I’d like to share it.
Though the Bush Administration’s official budget lists the national debt and deficit as being incredibly high, they are actually far worse than reported, according to Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN). But don’t just take his word for it, even if Cooper is a Rhodes Scholar and Harvard Law graduate. The following figures appear in the official U.S. Financial Report, released by the Treasury Department:
* The true national debt is $49 trillion, not the $8.3 trillion Bush reported
o That’s $156,000 for every citizen, or $375,000 for every working American
o This figure has more than doubled in the past five years
o We paid $327 billion last year on interest alone
* The true 2005 deficit was $760 billion, not the $318.5 billion Bush reported
o This is 6.2% of the GDP, not 2.6%
* It’s all getting worse

IMHO, it’s all about diversion and misdirection, and now only a filibuster can stop the White House effort launched Wednesday 9/6/06 to retroactively legalize war crimes. “The proposal is in the last 10 pages of an 86-page bill devoted mostly to military commissions, and it is a tangled mix of cross-references and omissions.” [12] “House GOP leaders … said they intend to bring the new rules up for a vote a week after the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. … Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) also has said he wants the Senate to vote on the new rules before the end of the month.” [13] Some Republican senators want, rumor has it, to bypass the Armed Services Committee and vote next week.
Article VI of the U.S. Constitution makes ratified treaties, e.g., the Geneva Conventions, are the supreme law of the land, “any thing in the constitution [e.g., presidential powers] or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding.” Per Justice Kennedy’s concurrence in the Hamdan ruling: “By Act of Congress [the War Crimes Act of 1996] violations of Common Article 3 [of the Geneva Conventions] are considered ‘war crimes,’ punishable as federal offenses, when committed by or against United States nationals and military personnel.” Those federal offenses are capital offenses whenever death results to the victim, as it has to three-dozen detainees in the Global War on Terror.
In effect, the Hamdan ruling makes Bush a war criminal, punishable under federal law. So the White House has set out to legalize war crimes, gutting the War Crimes Act and retroactively indemnifying White House officials against war-crimes prosecution — see [1] thru [8] below. And, as I’ve noted, on Wednesday 9/6/06, the White House launched its under-the-radar proposal to congress. In addition the president gave speech yet again claiming the need for interrogation methods violate Geneva Conventions. Ray McGovern eloquently refuted those claims, see “The Torturer’s Apprentice” [11].
The War Crimes Act is what links us to people of conscience throughout the civilized world. It is our claim to membership. It is what puts the strength of law behind our feelings of disgust at what the Bush administration has perpetrated. It is how American can and will hold them accountable and bring them to justice.
The White House will try to focus attention on rules of evidence for GWoT tribunals and on an array of alternative “compromise” measure. They will then suddenly rush the matter to the floor in the next two or three weeks. They can only be stopped by senators with the patriotism and backbone to sustain a filibuster. Don’t be misled by compromises. The objective is to maintain the illegality of war crimes, both past and future.

Merci! And Nancy Raygun’s people stirred themselves to complain about Ronnie’s image appearing in Webb’s campaign ad. No complaint about his mugshot at Macaca’s campaign website. Hypocrite.
Curious @156, NOW did a story about that a few weeks ago. Terrifying stuff. We’re so screwed and hardly anyone knows it.
The meme against Disney should really be “they’re letting Bush off the hook for 9-11″ instead of “they’re lying about Clinton” — the latter just feeds propoganda machine what it wants, the words lies and Clinton in the same sentence. If we make the debate about the inaccuracies about the Clinton administration the focus, no matter how egregious they may be, Rove still wins because he essentially has still changed the focus of the debate in his favor.
To make this really blow up in their faces, we would have to make the meme focus on the Bush and incomptenance — since clearly that’s what it’s meant to divert. This is the Rove strategy — take your weaknesses and your opponents strengths and reverse them by making claims that counter the facts.
Was the Clinton administration focused on terrorism and getting Bin Laden? Absolutely. Therefore you make a documentary that protrays the exact oppisate. And you get your opponents refuting it, which only gives credence to the idea because it repeats the essentials. Once the lie has been repeated, someone will believe it over the truth, no matter how blatant a lie it is.
Therefore the discourse, as much as it should be about the lies about Berger et. al — and they are definitely lies, not mere distorition, fabrications or dramatizations — the discurse must be about how Bush is not held to account. If you get the right wingers having to repond to that rather than just bolstering the fictional account, then you have a chance at making this gambit truly fail.
Of course once you take that stance, you’ll be the one politiczing 9-11 somehow.
TRex @ 171
Maybe they didn’t want to be too obvious…
and besides, they are branching out!

Just my 2 cents on that.
To think even Bush will speak during a movie where a President is shot. That anyone would allow that to be called a “docu” drama.
I tell ya. I live in New York. I lived in Manhattan in 2001.
9/11 was the worst day of my life, period. The trauma was more than I could have ever imagined, and went on for many months, maybe a year.
How ANYONE could try and “play” this event is beyond me. I don’t think Bush should be on TV. I dont think there should be all this commercialisation.
I think we should be with the people we love, and say prayers for those we lost, and try to be a little bit better human beings for one fucking day.

There’s also the story W told, when asked at a town meeting, about how he thought “That’s a bad pilot” when he saw the first plane hit the WTC. Then he went into the school, read Pet Goat, got interrupted by Card. Except…. there were NO shots that morning of the FIRST plane — we all saw shots of the SECOND plane, because the cameras were now all trained on WTC. So, what exactly did W see that made him think that about the pilot of the FIRST plane? Or, what was he making up to cover up what he was really thinking?
Still can’t believe they are showing someone shooting Clinton, even if on a screen. Did this happen, or is this another of ABC’s pornopoly of anti-Clinton wetdreaming?

~~~Whatever one’s assumption of what a “conspiracy theorist” is like, David Ray Griffin doesn’t fit the mold, perhaps because he’s really a nonconspiracy theorist. While he methodically deconstructs the official story, he doesn’t spin his own alternative yarn to fill the vacuum. Instead, he allows audience members to draw their own conclusions. As for conspiracy theories, he explains, “the official story is itself a conspiracy theory. As the accepted ‘conspiracy theory’ goes, a cadre of Al Qaeda operatives conspired to hijack four jetliners, did so undetected and were able to complete their mission with no interception or even interference from the best-prepared air force on the face of the earth.”‘
Even more unusual, Griffin says, “the crime was solved immediately, and the official story was in place before the day of the attack was over. Within 48 hours, our president stood at the National Cathedral surrounded by Billy Graham, a cardinal, a rabbi and an imam, and used this religious setting to declare a holy war on terror.”
If we were to contrast the smoothness of the post-9/11 operation with the aftermath of Katrina, we are left with the question: How can a president so inept in one setting have been so “ept” in another? ~~~
I have read interviews with David Ray Griffin, one particularly good one in the LA Times, a good while back. I think that his emphasis on “theory” is exactly correct, if you see what I mean.
Also the high-faluting food at her victory party — pizza and sandwiches. Guess her dead Daddy’s wallet is getting slim.
I wanted the Airport with AirTunes, which allows you to play your iTunes through your home stereo wirelessly, but that unit was $150.
I went to a bigbox store and bought a linksys for $50. It’s on a very good surge protector.
Yeah…even though that’s an even bigger waste of effort. They’re boned. I think they know it.
They play it on Stephanie Miller all the time.
I love it! -and love her!
“TheOtherWA @ 220
I just rewatched Bush sitting in the classroom. Downloaded that thing a long time ago. The initial “look” whatever it is, doesn’t last long. He’s sitting there reading along, and when the kids finish the sentence, or page, or whatever, Bush is chatting casually and very calmly with the teacher. He isn’t fazed AT ALL that he was just told “America is under attack” by Card.
There’s no appropriate reaction. None.”
I’ve said it before (twice) and I’ll say it again, check out http://www.physics911.net. There are many articles there, a couple replete with videos showing squibs, small explosions indicative of placed charges, emerging from WTC-7 and at least one of the towers (the video of the tower has a national tv press logo on it). The first time I saw the footage (I’m a photog, so used to scrutinizing reality and recorded reality for detail) I couldn’t sleep for two nights.
Biggest psy-op in history.
‘night TRex….
I’ve been thinkin’ and thinkin’… I’m guessing ABC will pull the craptacular here in the U.S.
I don’t know why, but I just think that is so…
TeddySF, it’s not that Harris’ daddy’s wallet is slim, it’s that the money went to her mother, who’s still very much alive. Kat doesn’t inherit until Mom goes. Which is really typical of how these things are handled.
That explains why she borrowed from her campaign funds to remodel her DC home. Harris has to be real, cuz you couldn’t make this stuff up!
“No one could have predicted that terrorists would fly Dumbo jets into buildings.”
Indeed – they are boned!
I wondered why there weren’t any ABC affiliates refusing to run this schlockfest. That’s what usually happens, a few refuse to run a particular movie, or episode of a show.
Maybe the problem is that this is too long. Six hours over two nights (when you add in the after discussion.) It’s one thing to fill an hour if a station decides not to run a particular episode, it’s something else entirely to fill 2 nights of primetime on short notice. Damn it.
Signing off, now.
The Sandman just caught up with me!
Night, FDL’ers!
Tried to go to KOS to find out about local ABC protests. KOS is down. Somebody doesn’t want me to have that information.
Trueblue at 230….
Was off trying to catch up on the thread….tis quite beautiful here….google Lake Taupo and find the main site and look at the images. This is a small town, but expensive, as it is a tourist destination. But three volcanoes to the south, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest freshwater lake (the result of the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history (180ish AD), sweet little hills (dotted with lambs now), steam vents from all the hot thermal areas.
It is laid back…someone said it is like going back to the 1950’s…not quite that far back.
The posties deliver the mail on pushbikes, and the morning streets are full of kids in uniforms walking and riding bikes to school. It isn’t uncommon to see barefoot kids in the stores, even in winter. There is something to the idea of the tough Kiwi.
Tensions continue to rise between some Maoris and Pakehas (European descendents) but still, I can’t think of an interaction between colonials and their remnants and the indigenous that is better.
Language is more vigorous and varied here. Even the kids have wider vocabularies here, and I love listening to them.
I believe all the major holders of national office are women right now. Helen Clark (PM)comes on tv and on radio and takes irate questions. She gives back pretty good and parliment is full of challenge (and nonsense).
There are funny pockets of regulation that drive everyone nuts. They drive like maniacs. They are sabotaging their education system with some new system, all homegrown and invented. (We are likely sending our teenager back to the States to finish up his high school, as here, he is splayed across three forms, and is finishing their maths and French programs, even though he would need to be in school another two years).
NZ Expat,
If you could stomach watching the first five minutes and please let us know if the American Airlines segment runs as described below? That would be an indication that they’re running the unedited version in NZ.
John at Ameriblog got a copy of the review video and his description of that segment (which is right at the start) is here:
American Airlines to blame for 911
Thanks very much either way. BTW very envious of you – NZ is the most breathtakingly beautiful place I’ve ever visited. Just keep an eye out for the Killer Sheep!
Good night, FDLer’s. This rabid lamb is sleepy too.
And NZ sounds beautiful, expat! I hope to go someday.
I’m headed away from the computer. I’ll drop in a comment when I see what happens here. Going to go catch the 6pm newscast.
Is there a way to download Quicktime clips? I tried on that fundie site I found at Kos to no avail. I hope clip number 6 gets put on YouTube so that they can see the caption of them saying Clinton is Satan! that I got the screen shot of. How many bets that doesn’t get edited out?
Okay….I’ll watch the first five minutes and report back…I’ll let you know shortly how TV One covers it in the news.
I have sent e-mails to steve jobs at several different addresses that have been posted here today. Have not recieved back so much as a “we recieve a lot of e-mails and will respond to yours as soon as we are able” form reply. Has anyone heard anything from mr. jobs or apple, whether by e-mail or in the news?
NZ Expat @ 260
NZ – any chance you can tape it? just in case it is needed?
trueblue @ 209
true, the code for that is (strike)your message(/strike), where the () is replaced with the symbols over your comma and period.
“The Path to 9/11″ — more of the same old same old. What else is new? Haven’t Democratic presidents always been too busy getting laid to look out for national security? Didn’t Pearl Harbor happen because Roosevelt was asleep in the arms of Lucy Mercer?
APPLE and Steve Jobs:
He could well be out of the country right now as Apple has its biggest European Show coming up in Paris and fall is also the time they debut all the new products overseas.
neurophius @ 261
deafening silence from jobs.
there’s supposed to be a big event on tuesday (launching the next ipod whatsits) here in sf; if anybody knows about it please post the info; we should picket if this tripe goes on the air.
neurophius – Not a peep.
Thinking about all this some more . . . .
Is it too much to suggest (as a meme) that ABC and Disney are giving aid and comfort to the enemy and undercutting national security by selling a false version of what led up to 9/11?
How about: “The war against terra is too vital for a national entertainment network to be misleading the American people about what happened, why, and how.”
Or something like that.
As a diary at Kos said, this isn’t just about libel of a few Democrats. This is about making it hard to be prepared because history is being made up for the purposes of ABC entertainment, when we have a war ta fight.
(A sort of red state approach to defining why ABC/Disney are wrong.)
No, can’t tape it. None of that machinery here….we are living pretty low on the tech level…heck, we don’t even have a sofa…just two chairs to sit in when we watch tv.
Okay. so far, no coverage on the news (there was a car wreck in Auckland and a radiologist strike coming). But the promo is on and strong….”Stay tuned for the shocking truth about 9/11″
Just saw another promo with little clips….pursed lips….”They had him, they could have had him” a woman says. Another of a man saying “We don’t have that authority”. Promos coming faster now.
This is much bigger than we thought. Worldwide showings? Push to Scholastic? We need to follow the money.
All this suddenly brings to mind a book that had a very brief circulation in the early `70s, called “The Rat Factory.” I had to google the author’s name, though–couldn’t remember it.
It was written in 1971 by JD Ryan, a nom de plume for a Disney animator named Jim McDermott.
The newsletter of the International Film Association says: “One of our members wrote us, ‘It was supposed to do for Disney what the Godfather did for the Mafia.’”
Apparently Disney did suppress the book, bought up all the available copies.
Funny thing. I saw a copy of it at a used book fair in college and didn’t pick it up. Didn’t know the history of the book at the time.
Wouldn’t this be an excellent time for a revival of it? :)
TheOtherWA @ 220
And if what Card said was really “America is under attack”, I’ll eat my hat. Would you tell the president something that vague? Wouldn’t you say “a second plane has crashed into the other WTC tower; it’s terrorists”?
Hi op99
Prof – I like your first meme.
Hi and goodnight katymine, and everyone, my eyeballs are drooping.
g’nite all, tomorrow we STOP THE MOUSE !
If there was any evidence that we need to bring back the fairness doctrine, this is it. How do we calculate the cost of cheap entertainment?
They are apparently showing the unedited version here in NZ. The first few minutes have American Airlines employees checking in Atta, despite warnings on their computer screens.
There was a lengthy written disclaimer that parts of it were fictionalized, but it was part of a warning that some scenes were graphic and disturbing. It was difficult to read it quickly enough and there was no verbal accompaniment.
It also mentioned that it was partly based on a book, The Cell, and I didn’t catch the authors. I hadn’t seen that mentioned before. Anyone awake? Anyone know anything about that?
NZ Expat @
280
It is a fictional thriller written after 9/11 by Colin Forbes, in which the plot is a potential al-Qaeda attack on London.
So, they’re borrowing from fiction to write fiction….
NZ Expat it is 1am here on pacific time. Just going to sleep. No I have not heard about a book, nothing so far mentioned one in any of my readings. Did a google search and came up with a book called “Cell” by Stephen King otherwise it was biology books and websites.
http://www.colin-forbes.co.uk/books/29.html
NZ ExPat,
The Cell – Inside the 9/11 Plot and why the CIA failed to Stop It was co-authored by John Miller who was an adviser to the film. He was an ABC reporter who actually interviewed Bin Laden in the 90’s I believe. Currently works in some capacity for the Bush Admin. No idea of the veracity of the book but have read elsewhere in the past week that it was one of the sources for the script.
Was the bit about American Airlines exactly as described in the review copy – dialogue between counter personnel and supervisor, etc.?
Thanks!
John Miller is in the FBI PR department.
Stay with us, NZ Ex-Pat, some of us are still up and interested.
Thanks Ladydawg!
Nice that the FBI has a PR department. Wonder if they have Marketing and Sales too?
Yes, the scene was exactly as described….he stands at the counter, the screen, which the employee can see is flashing a warning. The employee gets a supervisor who glances at him and his passport and then okays him. The first employee seems nervous and the supervisor soothes her by saying that they will hold his bags until they know that he has boarded the plane. Before this, they have shown pictures of United and American jets, and then there is an identifying caption that this is Logan Airport and the time of day…around 7ish…don’t remember the exact time.
Sorry I don’t have recording machinery, since I heard that was recently requested.
The computer is in a different room from the tv and I think I just lost control of the tv. Teenage son thinks it is bunk and there is a dvd he wants to finish and return.
When I last saw it, they were on the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
BUT….NZ doesn’t have to watch Bush insert his little speechifying into any of it. Small favors, I guess….
I just found a site with comments from some Kiwis on America Blog….I don’t know if they are going to keep current with it or not. I may cycle back through again, and if I find anything worth saying, I’ll post it.
Thanks for the effort, NZ Expat
Yes it is about the book The Cell: Inside the 9/11 Plot and Why the FBI and CIA Failed to Stop It, co-written by the former ABC News correspondent John Miller and two other guys. (and according to Media Matters also the book Relentless Pursuit, written by Samuel Katz.)
It follows the story of Agent John O’Neill just like in the movie. Found this paragraph in a book review that is different from the other normal Amazon types I read:
McGee @ 284
Hmmm. Seems that name is very popular lately. So, it wasn’t the Forbes book. My mistake.
Something about the lead author, John Miller (who is now a public affairs officer with the FBI).
Michael Stone is crime journalist based in New York, who wrote for New York magazine.
Chris Mitchell is apparently an Australian journalist, and an editor at an Australian paper.
If you have any friends who aren’t convinced of the consummate evil of the Disney Co., you can feed ‘em Carl Hiaasen’s Team Rodent, which is basically about how Disney completely & maliciously screwed up Orlando. Great book, and also short.
Of course, Florida and the county were pretty hot for Disney to locate there. As I recall, the permit for Disney World gave Disney Corp. the right to build its own nuclear power plant, if it wished.
My own feelings about Disney Corp. is that they would be in the vanguard of any fascist state–just one trip through Space Mountain should convince anyone of how good they’d be for fascism–they’re masters at crowd control. :)
there are new postings by Digby and Billmon (Whiskey Bar). all should read.
Indeed, if only for digby’s description of Charlie Gibson’s interview with Bush, including this:
More immediately though – maybe we should be urging people to go over to CBS, to watch a documentary about what REALLY happened, and one that the right wing wanted to censor, for language.
hi OS,
a brilliantly sunny, gently cool noontime in dresden. just finished listening to an old bruno walter CD of the mahler 4th with hilda gueden singing beautifully in the last movement. it’s a live recording from salzburg i believe, with the vienna philharmonic. i’m having a leisurely sunday, attacking the perpetual chaos i seem to create wherever i go. papers and bits of stuff piled up everywhere. you know, kharma…….
LOL, Far, I’m reluctantly known as the woman with the horizontal filing system. The day is clear and breezy and I suppose that the temps will rise into the category of perfect for yard work. I’ve been digging and transplanting shrubbery these past few days, and while I have to say the horizontal filing system seems to appkly out of doors as well, the two areas I replanted yesterday look so good it’s as if nothing was done!! However, the garden I’ve been digging from is another story.
Aren’t some of those old recordings wonderful!! Do you listen on Vinyl or CD?
Good morning to you, as I endorse and return good OS’s “Peace and Blessings for one and all!”
MY “horizontal filing system” tipped into “shambles” some while ago, OS (but of course I know where it all is — [mumbles “Or used to”]).
well, since i mailed my stuff from oregon i left the vinyl in storage. i didn’t even bring the CD boxes, which is why i’m not always sure about the recording details. i just put the CD’s in wallets. and i’m playing them on a tinny little boom box the previous tenant left for me. maybe i’ll spring for something better in a few months……
Bilmon’s essay was the best of the lot you described, IMHO…
I’m just trying to figure out how to divide my time this fine Sunday, and into the week…
We all know we’re going to have to launch a barrage @ the NYTimes for the despicable LieberHypeFest of yesterday, right? Am I missing something, or did this…
…not signal a new battlefront? Normally, I might say that I have seldom seen a communication taken so grossly out of context, but this is more than common – it’s now the norm!
Ed*ard,
Good of you to be here. i’ve been meaning to ask you about the Beethoven Op. 111. you voiced reservation about it the other day and i wondered why. one of the reasons (but only one) i think it’s special is B. seems to hint at ragtime/jazz….
This is the logical definition of Fascism. It is rampant in America. Bush has always used projection as one of his speech tools and therefore you now hear about Islamic fascists. People there is no such thing. Islamic people would never submit to fascism in true sense due to their religion. Fascism involved CORPORATE sponsors. America seems littered up with CORPORATIONS spewing hate towards the citizens that either sit at their desks providing their products or the citizens that buy the products. It is unAmerican to allow this and Bush and his GOP’ers know it hence the islamicfascism term popping throughout the media these days. remember Bush uses projection. Whenever he labels opposition something, he is telling you exactly what is going on inside his corrupt system. WE the people demanding he live by the Constitution are his terrorists. We are a threat to his plans……. and we must be silenced and stopped at all costs to his party. remember that, it’s more true than the path to 9/11… we’re on the path to dictator Bush’s world…..
locally I was doing oppo research on a GOP candidate who was new to politics and running issue-less as “a nice guy” — turns out he had a couple of arrests for wife-beating (battery with injury). Not nice!
public records are often on the Innertubes – if you run for office, make sure your pecadilloes havent been immortalized in TCP/IP. The new blogmeister for Lieberman was immortalized online with drunk college fotos — not good!
newton (#329): playing to win? Karl? here, kitty, kitty, kitty……
New dictionary entry?:
hi newtonusr. I always feel the GOP views politics as a game and will do whatever needs to be done to win, no matter how underhanded it is. They talk about the Dems while the Dems talk about the issues. Goopers don’t seem to be worried about actually governing effectively. They see November as the final round of the playoffs and 2008 as the Superbowl.
Related to those London Sunday Times stories I linked at 307, here’s one from WaPo:
fahrender @ 329
Just before Brahms died, he was recorded on wax cylinder. He had recently heard an early ragtime or cakewalk piano performance in Vienna. The piece recorded – which I’ve only read about, and he didn’t finish – was his ragtime attempt. That was the late 1890s – the time of Joplin’s “Mapleleaf Rag.” Beethoven’s 3rd C minor piano sonata was completed in 1822.
I’m tempted to pull out Op. 111 right now to see if I can hear what you’ve discerned, ’cause I’ve never caught that. I love to discover something new about an old friend.
I think what I said the other night was that I didn’t consider it an easy winner (ragtime, anyone?) when it comes to turning somebody unfamiliar with Beethoven’s piano sonatas on to the greatness of the art he created in that series of compositions.
Morning all! Nice cool front came into the area last night. Banana Buttermilk pancakes for breakfast ….
Hi Liz – did you see Chimpy’s interview on AF One? I’m tempted to suggest he may have had some bad fish. He looks like he’s aged 10 years in the last 2 weeks.
Not being the pilot of his Ship of State, Chimpy is steering by instruction. He may have just realized what he’s brought us to, and his legacy may have shaken him. He looks awful, like a man who just ran over his kids. Not kidding.
Why is this not surprising?
Why is this not surprising? Indeed. Why is so little of what comes out of this administration not surprising? It’s the stuff of our nightmares, and though we can say, I told you so, that doesn’t make things any better. I think we are going to need to wear hip boots, if not waders to get through this next couple of months. And we have to be vocal and loud.
Ed*ard (#335):
i thought i had a recording of Op. 111 with me but it seems i don’t. i wish i could narrow your search down for you but my memory of the spot is too distant. as i recall, the first movement is a long mutated sonata form. i think it’s somewhere in that movement but it might be in the second movement which is the final movement (?) and mostly an adagio. something about a 3/16 or 3/32 time signature floats by in my brain but i’m really not sure about that. anyway it’s a rocking little section that has lots of syncopation in it.
For it to be worthwhile for Gore to jump back into the cesspool, he needs to find a staff who can help him stay loose, honest, wise and witty. I can’t remember the last time I saw that work on the national stage of American politics. It just might work for Gore, though.
But his biggest plus might be to amply show how different the 2008 Gore is to the debris of media memories which would be dredged up from his pasty (that’s right, pasty) 2000 campaign. That wasn’t Al Gore.
Am I crazy or are big pharm companies delighted in the impending lax air pollution laws as it will lead to even more childhood asthema and the need to sell more inhalers.
Spelling does not count this early in the morning and Spell Check has never worked for me.
Chafee has the ‘Magic Bullet” trajectory of needles to thread. It’s an impossible race for him. Too bad.
Florida Mom @ 352
no ma’am, you’re not crazy. has any big corporation ever hesitated to put the public at risk to make a buck?
Mmm, imm, banana pancakes — bet those made the young scholar smile! So happens that just yestiddy, I sent somebody a couple of banana recipes. Still have ‘em handy . . .
And earlier this morning, here’s what I stirred up:
Imm, enough pancakes to share with an Old Sow? LOL
I miss Medaka too.
Pfiffer……what are you supposed to be sewing?
oh my god! food!
fahrender @ 352
Yeah, I know the sections you’re bringing up. 1st mvmt is turgid, sonata-allegro form in Cm. 2nd mvmt is placid, a set of variations in CM, and he does a lot of kinky rhythmic stuff, in ways which convinced Viennese at the time that this deaf codger was going bonkers.
no ma’am, you’re not crazy. has any big corporation ever hesitated to put the public at risk to make a buck?
There has to be at least one in the history of corporations. Aw, who am I kidding. Of course there isn’t. I just cannot believe the number of inhalers there are in mu children’s school.
Food alleregies are rampant as well.
cookin’ with bacon drippin’s!
newtonusr @ 357
Sorry Newtonusr – need another cup of coffee to be fully awake. What do you men about the “magic bullet” trajectory and “impossible race for him” – does that mean Chaffee can win both the primary and the general?
Lotus, shouldn’t that read “Bananas Foster for 1?”
;)
Great recipes, LOtus — I like the cornmeal addition in the griddle cakes. I ALWAYS make enough to share, OS and twolfi. As for the peaches in maple syrup — I want some!!
Make sure you stop in one of the Disney stores and tell them how much you appreciate the Mother Ship’s efforts. Here’s a link with addresses and phone numbers to their gazillion outlets:
We have lots of fiber-y folk here, don’t we? Sounds like a challenge indeed. Any curved seams are above my pay grade.
Ilson – back to watering mouth! The recipes look great. And, just to keep your thread consistant. Try slicing some bananas (into quarter shaped pieces) and putting them in the oiled pan (arranging them in pancake size groups) and pouring the pancake batter on top of them. They caramelize and make the pancakes even better! You need almost no syrup (and I assume you only use Grade B (dark) pure maple syrup!
Good morning, Old Sow.
I’m sewing an Issey Miyake coat (Vogue pattern) that is a real challenge, since the pattern pieces are very odd-shaped, so it’s like putting together origami.
I’m pumped up from the dinner party we threw Saturday night and won’t be able to sleep for another hour or so. Good food. Excellent wines (which I stopped consuming five hours ago). I’m working on some promo material for a candidate for our borough assembly, and labels for folders for my band. And blogging at fdl….
Didja like that kids, I responded to Pfiffer before she answered me!!! The wonder of high speed toobz.
and I assume you only use Grade B (dark) pure maple syrup!
Nuh-uh, hon — strictly sorghum molasses down hyeuh.
Ed*ard (#358):
yup, it’s in the variations. the rhythmic stuff there. i don’t think there is an earlier example of it……
Curved seams are above my pay grade, too, unfortunately, but I bet you already know that since it seems you can read my mind!
the old Schnabel recording brings out the rhythmic idiosyncrasies better because it seems ‘awkward’. Modern pianists know how to handle those passages better …
Argh! This is what I meant to quote. I’m so bad at this toobz business!
Richmond @ 362
Actually, I don’t know RI well enough to say – I was speaking of the NRSC strategy of, well, race-baiting to screw-up the polling, among other things. So how does a supposedly Liberal North-Eastern Republican get the Dems he’s traditionally needed? Gopers hate his guts. And the blogs haven’t been his friend recently. I’m not saying he won’t win – I’m just saying that anybody who bets on him needs a Calgon Bath and a HiBall.
Pfifferling @5:22
Sewer here…….what’s the number on your Miyake? One of those fab golden oldies no longer available?
fahrender @ 374
Probably not. His strangest set of variations. His most comprehensive – the “Diabelli Variations” – were written a year later. They never get wild and unkempt like Op. 111.
Waccamaw @5:36
It’s 1476 and still available for sale. Hope this link works.
I went to the Lieberman blog briefly after a head’s up from *ilson and was disgusted by all the anti-Lamont garbage. Lieberliar’s web site looks like the Drudge Report.
When I read the article you highlighted it clicked that Lieberliar has indicated that there is dirt coming out about Lamont so stay tuned. So, I’m wondering – is Lieberliar going to benefit directly from the opposition research and negative campaign dollars the GOP is doling out? Digging up an 8 year old email from a constituent is a good start (of course if that’s the worst they can do – it’s pretty pathetic). If Lieberliar is part of the GOP smear effort – will that be enough to have the Dem leadership denounce him?
Surely Lieberman has plenty of stuff that can be used to show he’s a hypocrite and a liar. Why doesn’t the Lamont campaign start with Lieberliar’s own words about running against a three term Senator?
Wow Pfiffer, you’re gonna be stylin’
*ilson46201 @ 378
When I was at Oberlin, a piano major friend turned me on to Schnabel’s Beethoven. Later I discovered his Schubert performances. But my favorites are his recordings for Vox of the late Mozart concerti.
I can’t find a recording of Sviatoslav Richter doing Op. 111, but I keep hoping.
Old Sow @ 385
If only I looked like the model on that pattern envelope……………
Ed*ard Teller @ 381
i’d like to hear Moravec do it.
Dear Pfiffer,
Link works great; tks much for the preview & happy stitching.
do you do bit-torrents? there are TWO different Richters doing op111 at demonoid.com — recording done 30 years apart. if you dont do bittorrents, I’ll snatch them and burn a CD or 2 for you…
Pfiffer, at our house we’ve reached the stage where we let our minds work better than the mirrors….style away!!
dab from CT @ 381
Hi dab from CT!
First off, I’m from CA, so I don’t have a pipeline into CT mindsets, except yours and your lovely friends from there.
Second, as rumors began that RGJoe would go Indy, I dismissed the idea – i thought Bubba had struck a deal, so RGJoe would not be able to taint him. Wrong.
Third, I thought the entire state would tar & feather the jerk. Wrong.
Fourth, in the unlikely event that 2 & 3 didn’t happen, I believed the Dems in the Senate would strip RGJoe’s committee assignments, parking space, washroom key and dining priviliges, Wrong.
So I think it would take a literal miracle for the Senate Dems to jettison RGJoe. Hope I’m wrong.
And Lamont has run the cleanest campaign I have ever seen (I’ve been involved in campaigns since ‘64, and the only campaign I can remember that was even close was when a great guy named Jerry Waldie ran for CA Governer in ‘74).
Lamont simply will not get down in the mud with these fools. Or am I wrong?
The wonders of this thread. I swanny.
I just called the BBC in Britain to register my outrage that they are showing this made for tv movie. The guy argued with me. He said that people are not influenced by television and told me I had no right to call cause I didn’t pay for BBC programming. He was rude and surprisingly weird about the whole thing. I finally yelled at him and he did take my name. Maybe.
What is the skinny on BBC?
Is it time to boycot Disney?
