[Roger Sharpe joins us today in the comments to chat about his candidacy for the NC-5. As always with Blue America threads, please keep this on topic and polite. And please stop by to give Roger a big FDL welcome! -- CHS]
Blue America has been examining a lot of longshot candidates this year. Not one of our men or women was favored. When we first started talking about Ned Lamont taking on a sitting U.S. Senator — and one of Lieberman’s supposed stature — we were laughed at.
Recent polls show several of our Blue America candidates actually pulling even or ahead of the Republican incumbents they are challenging. On the very day that Chris Carney joined us for a blog session, his under the radar race against deviant Republican Don Sherwood made headlines when a poll showed him winning by 7 points. After his FDL session, and using Blue America strategies, Larry Kissell’s race went from… well, from nowhere to being a race everyone is watching.
Now we’re taking on an even tougher race in North Carolina than Larry’s. In fact, Roger Sharpe is probably Blue America’s longest shot of the election year.
And he’s running against the only woman in the House of Representatives with a more extremist voting record than Mean Jean Schmidt, Rep. Virginia Foxx. Please click that link and look at the Foxx voting record. You will gasp! Every horrible thing you have heard about the Bush Regime involving itself in sounded like a great idea to Virginia Foxx. Far right Republicans like Tom DeLay, Steve King (the male Ann Coulter), Colbert’s friend Lynn Westmoreland, Roy Blunt, Barbara Cubin and John Doolittle almost look semi-sane compared to Foxx.
Talking with Roger on the phone a few days ago made me feel I was in the Old South. He reminded me of the kind of guy who would welcome a stranger with a tall glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot day. He seemed to be a real gentleman with old school values straight from Sunday School — but from the Sunday schools that teach about Jesus’ love, not about Pat Robertson’s and James Dobson’s hate, Sundays schools that teach about lending a hand to your neighbor, not about using the middle finger salute to celebrate your bigotry and human failings.
And Roger has committed himself to a life of community service, having served as a state senator when he was still in his 20s and as an educator and seminarian. During President Carter’s Administration, he worked as a special assistant to the Director of the U.S. Office for Civil Rights (negotiating higher education desegregation plans) and under President Reagan, he was appointed executive liaison to the White House for the National School Boards Association.
I think what pushed Roger into deciding to get down into the political trenches and run against Foxx was a very personal moment.
When Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, it was second nature for Roger to do what he did and second nature of Foxx to do what she did. Roger immediately went to his church to volunteer and, with many of his neighbors, went to Mississippi to work at a Lutheran-Episcopalian relief site.
Meanwhile, the KKK couldn’t even get a dozen of its most loyal congressional supporters to vote against giving aid to the striken communities of the Gulf Coast. Most Americans — Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated — were mortified at the picture of despair coming out of the region. But to the KKK caucus in the Congress…well…you know. Virginia Foxx joined the 10 other most vicious bigots in the entire House to vote "no." The 11 worst — and Virginia Foxx thought she was representing North Carolina values!
"She voted against giving aid to the Gulf States," Roger explained gently, still seeming disappointed and perplexed by the notion. "It made me think she had lost touch with her constituents’ values, the values of the people I grew up with. When neighbors are in need, we help them."
A grasping and brutal multimillionaire from the Bronx, Foxx, who lives in a gated community, doesn’t help anyone — except herself and the large corporations who contribute to her unbounded political ambitions. (I think I forgot to mention she had originally made a name for herself as a state legislator by introducing hate-filled bills aimed at denying equality to gays and, later, to immigrants.) She is loaded with legal bribes from the Big Business interests she is consistently serving. And while she does the bidding of the corporations, harming her constituents with terrible health care, high gas prices, off-shored jobs, declining education opportunities, she uses the most vile political demagoguery to make them think she has their interests in mind– joining a tiny minority of extremists, for example, to vote "no" on renewing the Voting Rights Act.
Our friends over at the TPM Cafe tell us Roger’s campaign won’t accept Big Business money at all because he believes, wisely, that you cannot clean house with mud on your shoes.
And cleaning The House is very much what he has in mind if he can make his Piedmont neighbors focus on what Virginia Foxx really is and what he is offering as an alternative. Blue NC has a solid interview with Sharpe from July 24th that shows clearly what that alternative is.
Roger told me he was startled to see Foxx return from a photo-op trip to Baghdad and come to the district to tell people that everything is "going well." Like most Americans, Roger does not think everything is "going well" in Iraq. In fact, Roger believes voters’ misgivings about the Bush/Foxx Iraq policies are going to help him win his race. And Roger isn’t just saying he wants to bring the troops home. His Iraq strategy goes way beyond that because, like more and more people paying attention, he realizes that people connected to the Bush Administration are profiteering from the war and must be held accountable.
People who think everything is going well will probably not want their delusions disturbed. More thoughtful folks in NC-05 need to get behind Roger’s selfless campaign to help clean up the mess people like Bush and Cheney and Foxx have made.
Roger is offering a dozen different ways to get involved with his campaign. Blue America wants to ask you to lend a hand right here at our ActBlue page. And the first 30 people who donate to Roger on our Blue America page today get a choice between two great CDs– Nina Simone’s Baltimore or the debut solo CD from country superstar John Rich. If you want Nina Simone, add .01. If you want John Rich, add .02. If you just want Roger Sharpe and no music, let your donation end with .00.

Howie! Rootz!
Howie—another great candidate…and Nina Simone to boot. How can I refuse?
Mr. Sharpe:
Although I can ill afford to do so at this point, I promise to send $50 to your campaign if you pledge not to spend any of your advertizing budget with the local ABC affiliate should it air “Path to 9-11″, and pledge not to spend money with any ABC/Disney/Cap Cities owned media outlet should ABC broadcast that program.
Quite simply, I don’t want ABC/Disney to get one DIME of my money if this atrocity air.
Roger — welcome to FDL, best of luck in your race! And Howie, thanks for another great intro to a great candidate.
Welcome Howie and Roger!
RBG @ 3
Good attitude– and keep the Blue America PAC in mind too. We need to raise some dough if we’re going to have any hope of getting “Have You Had Enough” radio spots on the air in October.
Roger is going to be joining us soon. Paul, let’s be sure to ask him about your idea. It’s a great one (#4)
Glad to be with you.
We have just come off two days of our Twelve County tour. There is a lot of enthusiasm out there. I told my supporters at each stop that we will defeat Virginia Foxx – who has been a rubber-stamp for the failed policies of this administration.
oh Howie…same offer to Blue America PAC… $50 for a pledge that none of the money will be spent on Disney/ABC/Cap Cities owned or affiliated stations… :)
Welcome, Roger!
I don’t expect to give ABC any money. We are doing a grassroot campaign.
Greetings, Roger. I always enjoy meeting Howie’s Blue America candidates. Thank you for running against that vile Virginia Foxx.
In like manner, I won’t accept any money from PACs, unlike the Virginia Foxx who has 38 pages of special interest donors.
Paul– you have my pledge, not one dime of Blue America PAC money will go to ABC/Disney/Cap Cities.
Roger, welcome to Firedoglake!! Did you notice Paul’s question at #4?
Welcome Roger, my next stop is to the Act Blue page.
1. How is your volunteer effort looking so far?
2. Are you getting any campaigning/endorsement help from John Edwards?
Taking money from PACs obligates your positions, and I want to represent the interests of people of the Fifth District. I want them to have a voice in Washington, not the PACs
Welcome to the Lake, Roger!
I loved that article in the Winston Salem Journal several weeks ago. North Carolina Democrats are looking back, not to 1994 but to 1973 or something like that, post Watergate. I think the perfect storm exits here for a repeat of that. A heaping helping of HAD.ENOUGH and THROW.THE BUMS.OUT will do it. That, and a bunch of unmotivated Republican voters not voting. I’m well familiar with the historical politics in your area. But of luck to you sir! This ones personal for me.
This one needs some serious money, FDL’ers. I’m in for $100, heading to the Act Blue page….
PS. Thanks, Howie
Roger, what would you do to combat the Bush administration’s assertion of unlimited executive power? If Congress passes a law Bush doesn’t like, he either signs a “signing statement” or just plain ignores it. If the courts tell him he is breaking the law, he pressures Congress to change the law retroactively to ratify his crimes. The Rubber Stamp Republican Congress mostly goes along with him. This is not the balance of powers contemplated by our Constitution.
We have asked the Edwards campaign to try to get him in the district at one of our rallies. We would like to see that happen.
Our volunteer effort is looking very good. We are a volunteer campaign – an association of volunteers – to help bring about change. We invite people of good will to join us.
It has been mentioned that our campaign is the most organized in this district since can be remembered. Thanks in large part to our network of volunteers.
3 of my pet issues are imminent domain, preventing books from being banned, and public education. Can you please tell us your views on imminent domain at the local, state, and federal level? On book banning, what do you propose to do to prevent age appropriate books from being banned for our children? How would you improve public education for all children?
neurophius, I totally agree with you. THis is one of the reasons that I am running for the congressional seat. I want to be a different voice in Washington, to stop the exemptions that Bush is giving himself. We have got to have accountability and checks and balances. Our rubber-stamp Congress, and Virginia Foxx, need to be unseated for America to be America again.
Roger Sharpe @ 20
That’s great, Roger. It’s easy to become passionate and involved for a candidate you can feel proud of.
OK I’m in!
I’d love to here what you think about N.C. on a statewide level, Roger. I’m in Ohio myself, and I believe we are on the verge of a Blue Revolution here.
Good day, Mr. Sharpe, and thank you for joining us today. Please tell us, sir, what voters ask you about on the campaign trail. What are the top three issues voters ask you about? Do voters see a connection between their real-life interests and the betrayal of their interests by their current Congresswoman?
Thank you again for your effort, sir, I will do what I can to support you. Having lived in Greensboro and spent much time in Winston-Salem as well, I imagine overcoming Bush “true believers” is tough. I commend you for trying and wish you the best!
Thanks, Roger. I’ve had enough, and I’m glad you have, too.
When the Republicans took over Congress in 1994, they had their so-called “Contract with America” that listed goals they hoped to accomplish. I think the “Contract” was largely a gimmick, but at the same time it is important, if the Democrats take over the House, that they have a clear sense of priorities. What are yours?
Sorry, computer freaked out there for a second. I typed a long response to Iowa Christine, and it got lost in cyberspace.
your money is on its way, Howie!
Mr. Sharpe, “do not expect to” is not the same as “won’t”. Howie has been very successful in promoting long-shot candidates and getting them “seed money” to establish themselves as “viable” candidates capable of attracting larger and more numerous contributions. What I don’t want to see is my money being used in any way, directly or indirectly, to enrich Disney/ABC should “Path to 9-11″ air. So I’m hoping you can make the same promise Howie made with regard to the Blue America PAC.
TeddySanFran and neurophius: these questions have similar intent.
After talking with people in the district there are several issues that are my priorities. Addressing the Iraqi War is a top priority of mine. I would insist that we go from a unilateral process – with the US footing the bill – to asking those other European nations, China, and Japan to sit at the table with us and the Iraqis to have a multilateral process. THere isn’t an urgency for them to get involved becuase we are footing the bill.
Affordable gas for people. People in America should not have to choose between gas and grocieries. We should also work for alternative fuels, unlike the current Congress that gives lip-service to this ideal. Foxx who has recieved PAC money from ExxonMobil and the petrolium industry thumbs her nose at people of North Carolina.
Affordable health care is another area and quality educational opportunities round out my top priorities. We need to take our healthcare legislation out of the grasps of the pharmecuetical companies.
Roger, Welcome to FDL. Others will have questions, but I do want to thank you for stepping up to run. We will be proud to have you representing NC’s 5th CD.
Just finished donating! Howie, another great candidate. Mr. Sharpe, thank you for helping in the Gulf states after Katrina. That is spirit I think most Americans share that has nothing to do with political points of view. That your opponent couldn’t get off her tush tells me she is a hard-hearted person. This country has suffered too much of that the last 6 years. What is your district’s attitude towards what is happeing in Iraq?
Paul, our money is best served in other grassroots efforts than television time. We plan on spending our money on targeted mailings right now.
B Muse, you’re welcome too!! Your writings about the North Carolina candidates have been a godsend.
AZ Matt, people still want to know what the war is about. Virginia Foxx went to Baghdad and said that all is going well in Iraq. This caused a major backlash among the citizens of the 5th Congressional District.
I find that the people don’t understand what it is all about. It still hasn’t been adequately explained how it is connected with our national security. There is no plan or exit strategy. THis is simply unacceptable.
Good luck to you Roger. Sounds like you’re going to need it with the lady who lives behind the gates… I’m in and thanks Howie for all that you do for Blue America!
I am very disturbed, as are the constituents of this district, that billions of dollars are being spent on no-bid contracts for the Bush administartion’s cronies.
Roger, have you challenged Foxx to a debate? And if so, what’s the story? It should be pretty difficult for her to justify her outrageous votes– particularly against increasing the minimum wage, against outlawing gasoline price gouging, against aid to the Gulf States after Katrina, gutting Social Security, for the Medicare doughnut hole, etc
Iowa Christine – going to retype our response here to you – in a more condensed version.
I disagree that government should be able to take private land and turn around and sell it to private developers.
I worked as a public advocate debating in forums over the country against censorship of books and against attacks on the freedom to learn in the organization People for the American Way.
I think that people in leadership in the country have to be the best advocates for quality public education as a bedrock institution of democratic society. I believe that this administration have sought to undermine the value of public education. People of working families, for their children to have opportunities to succeed, have to have quality education.
I guess this Foxx woman doesn’t realize that not only do the victims of Katrina need helf for their state, but she probably doesn’t realize that the gas she puts in her car and the fish she puts on her plate, comes from Louisianna.
Education in rural locations can sometimes be hit-or-miss. Attracting qualified teachers and retaining them is at times an issue. How has No Child Left Behind served you district? Are the schools able to meet the requirements?
Howie, yesterday I concluded my Twelve County Tour where I went county by county issuing a debate challenge to Foxx. Early this week, I will issue the challenge in a formal statement and hand it to Foxx’ office.
One of the television statements has been trying to get her to agree to a debate with me. They have yet to hear back from her.
Roger Sharpe @ 34
What is the demographic of your district – rural or urban, where do folks work (and how high is un- and under-employment), how educated are they, etc.?
What information can you share with us regarding polling in your district? What trends are you seeing? I know that getting rid of Foxx would be quite an upset – what needs to happen to pull this off?
AZ Matt, I have said during this campaign to the people to be weary of slogans that come from this administration. They are hollow. They sound good, but we know quite differently, don’t we?
We want to offer incentives to attract qualified teachers to teach in the areas where there is low achievement. We also want to provide situations where there is not a big turn-over of teachers. We know from national studies that short tenure is currently the case.
In terms of the district, it is mostly rural. We are in transition from an agriculture based economy. We have lost a lot of our manufacturing jobs due to outsourcing. What is remarkable about the people of this district is that there is a resiliency and a desire to do better for themselves and their families. With leadership, there is the prospect that we can have a better future for them and their children. WE have a lot of natural resources here and have a lot of tourism in this state. A lot of people are retiring and coming to this part of the state. This is all part of the transition of this district. I have worked to help the farmers transition from tobacco to alternative crops and vineyards. We are beginning to see quite a bit of change taking place, with the prospect for more.
curiousgeorge: We have not conducted a poll ourselves, they are more expensive than we can currently afford. My former professor, Mike Dukakis, asked if we had a shot at winning. I assured him that it is as sure as the embattled farmers that stood on the Concord bridge.
This is a democratic country, and we are in it to help the country. There is no question of whether or not we should run this race to win. We are running for a democratic government and a constitutional democracy. We cannot let the polls decide whether or not we are to be involved in these campaigns.
Mr. Sharpe, best of luck and a small donation (which I wish could be more) to you!
My question is this: if you are elected as part of a Dem-majority Congress, and Rep. Conyers introduces a bill of impeachment against GWB, how will you vote and why?
Great sentiments, Roger– and wonderful imagery.
Mr. Sharpe – thank you for visiting with us at Firedoglake.
I’d like to suggest that folks read Mr. Sharpe’s bio on his website – what an amazing representative he could be!
Thank you for running! and I’ll be hitting the Blue America page pronto!
There are four regional rural development centers funded by USDA across the country. The Southern Rural Development Center is at Mississippi State University. These centers are working hard to assist rural communities in developing their strengths and assets. They can be a great resource for your district communities. http://srdc.msstate.edu/
For people that want to know more about where my values are in regard to public education and issues in society, you could refer to my book Ceremonies of Innocence by Mercer University Press, 2005.
Siun, good to see you here. I hope you can make it to a special Blue America session on Tuesday– where I’ll be making some… announcements about some of the PAC’s activities
AZ Matt, thank you very much!
Question for Howie: What are the best campaign tactics and techniques for under-funded candidates like Roger, who want to remain pure by not accepting funding from corporate interests? If you can’t compete on the airwaves, how do you achieve exposure?
Roger, what are some of biggest local enviromental issues your counties have?
I’m in. Good luck, Mr. Sharpe, and thanks for running against this dogbreath republican.
Roger Sharpe @
46
Roger, you’re going to be a great representative. I’m not the best shot, but I can load your musket. Here’s $100.
AZ Matt, one of the hottest issues right now is out of Blowing Rock, Watauga County. The US Forest service plans to log trees, while the city wants to designate the area against such practices. THe town council – very Republican – had a meeting with Foxx to try to get Federal legislation to designate this as a scenic area. Foxx told the town council to take a hike, and the city is enraged.
We also notice neglect on the maintenance of the Blue Ridge parkway. We have had supporters take me to show me places where this neglect is most apparent, for lack of funding.
Thank you MarcLord, every bit certainly helps. $20 gets us 5 yardsigns, and $1000 helps us get close to targeted mailings.
I’ve made my contribution. I have to go now. Roger, thanks for coming by, and good luck.
Thank you for your support, neurophius. Have a great day.
op99 (#54)– the million dollar question. The answer is retail politics. Roger will probably use our donations for lawn signs and a mailer. He works tirelessly visiting outlying counties and pressing the flesh. I get the idea that to Roger the constituents are what he thinks of as his neighbors.
Just south of Roger’s district (in NC-08) Larry Kissell made a very cost-effective move by spending a few hours at a gas station and talking to voters as they filled their cars up for what gas cost when his rubber stamp opponent, Robin Hayes, was first elected ($1.22). Larry spent very little money and got hundreds of thousands of dollars of TV, radio and newspaper exposure.
Mr. Sharpe, I’m having some tech trouble too, but my question for you at 47 ^ is now visible, and I hope you have a chance to get back to it. Thanks very much to both you and our moderator.
Howie, did you say there’s something we can do to get the BlueAmerica site to remember our individual info? If so, would you please teach me that trick? Thanks for all YOU do too, lord knows!
I have been to Cherokee, NC. I know from talking to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee how important tourism, especially this time of year with Fall colors, is to them. It sounds as if Foxx is into short-term gain. She must believe with Rapture coming you don’t need to save anything! I do like your beliefs on enviromental stewdardship. Where I live people believe you must be looking seven generations ahead.
Roger just said he can do a targeted mailing for $1,000. We’ve chipped in a little over $700 so far today. I hope we’ll be able to provide him with 2 targeted mailings.
Ned Lamont is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful human being ever to run for Senator from Connecticut!
Welcome to FDL Mr. Sharpe,
Bless you for taking on this challenge.
As native North Carolinian, I’m astonished and appalled by the Foxx record in Congress. I thought she beat Mr. Robinson in her primary because he’s totally off the charts. How much support in your district is there for votes like her anti-Katrina relief and anti-Voting Rights Act?
I’m asking because I would think all but the looneys should be embarassed to have her represent them. How much press coverage is there about issues like the Blowing Rock debacle?
The best thing we can do right now is get earned media. Yesterday’s Twelve County Tour was very effective for media exposure. We have had and will have several interviews with local television stations.
The constituents of the 5th District are my neighbors.
I believe that it is incumbent upon citizens to step up to the plate. If they truly feel like they are being misrepresented or under-represented that they can help change that. That is what the system is about.
Howie Klein @ 61
Maybe we should spotlight this post to John Edwards?
Jane,
Even the Winston-Salem Journal, the Eastern part of the district is covering stories on Blowing Rock. This is an emerging story throughout our district. I think that Ms. Foxx is a disgrace to North Carolinians.
I think the Katrina incident is very important to this district. There is among the people here, a very strong notion that – beyond party or faith denominations – there is a strong filling that one should always help neighbors in need. For example, we had two little boys that ran away from home about a week ago. They had gone to a local river. There were hundreds of volunteers that came searching for the boys, who drowned in the river. These were neighbors from several counties from different political persuations and faith persuations that were just responding to neighbors in need. She by her callousness misread her constituents on this regard.
Howie – I’m sorry I posted and dashed away. Thank you very much for the encouragement. I love what I’m doing and if I could, I would spend every waking moment helping our Democrats in NC. I can’t tell you what it means to have you and all of the supporters from other states helping our candidates. Life as a progressive in NC has been somewhat discouraging and lonely until this year. Hope is a beautiful thing and it is hope that this community gives us, especially when we’ve been told we face impossible odds.
Thank you Howie, Christy, Jane, Pach and the entire FDL community.
With regards to the Voting Rights Act, every citizen should have the right to vote. We cannot go back to the days where there was the implication that some people have more rights than others, as Ms. Foxx’ voting record suggests.
B.Muse at 71 — don’t thank us, thank great folks like Roger who are putting themselves on the line and running for office. They deserve all the kudos and then some.
B. Muse/The Southern Dem: That was a very nice response. Thank you.
Mod, no need to spring this one if you can instead direct Howie’s and Mr. Sharpe’s attention back up to 47 for a minute. Thanks again.
This is a drive-by post — I popped some $$ in the collection plate. The Nefarious Leslie and I are playing today. But we might go work later (she says) on the campaign.
Lotus (#75)- I don’t know why you want my opinion. I’d like to hear Roger’s too though. (Just for the record, I’m less interested in impeachment than I am in serious accountability for all the criminality and treason. Impeachment might have a role or be a baby step in the right direction, but nothing’s ever going to make me happy until the entire Regime pays– fully– for what they’ve done.)
Oops, my question for Howie is at 63, not 47. Sorry for the confusion.
Roger, what communitcation and transportation infrastructure issues that need to be addressed? Is internet connectivity widely available and affordable? Decent roads? I bring these up because have an effect on econimic development.
can someone repost Lotus’ question, I don’t seem to see it here on my end.
Matt: Great Question! (lousy spelling) :)
Lotus (#63)… ActBlue just seems to remember. There’s no trick. I type in one letter or # and they fill in the rest (except for the credit card #)
ccmask @ 80
Lack of coordination between brain and fingers!
Roger @59,
Sorry for the drive-by post, and I haven’t donated yet because of rough-housing with my toddler, who has mucho Boy Energy to burn off. Also took a look at your web site, excellent. So the $700 figure Howie quoted before doesn’t reflect my $100 yet. The first campaign I ever gave money to was Ned Lamont’s–I’m happy with the return so far, and your approach reminds me of his. ;-)
lol
The communications network is not as developed as it should be. THere are parts of the district that don’t have internet accessibility. The roads are pretty developed, but the problem in recent years is that there is a lack of funding for repair and maintenance. North Carolina used to be the good road state, but now the interstates are being neglected. I remember I-77 having potholes in it, and there are pretty rough roads on other interstates.
MarcLord, Thank you!
Howie Klein @ 82
Dang, I sure wish it would for me too, Howie; works on the other commerce sites I visit. Ah well, I’m apparently doomed to life on the porch instead of in the house, so I’ll just keep gettin’ up on my hind legs and scratchin’ at the do’ when I want in . . .
Here’s my 47 again, Mr. Sharpe.

Roger Sharpe @ 80
Welcome to FDL Roger! Sometimes you have to refresh the whole page (or hit F5 to refresh) instead of using the “Refresh Comments” button (which shows the latest comments only) to see things released from moderation.
Good Luck on your campaign! Bless you Howie for always bringing us such outstanding candidates.
Christy @72 – oh we are, we are. We will be thanking him soon with a deluge of LTEs. We are about to start a big project that hopefully all of our Dem challengers (and incumbents) will benefit from in NC. I don’t have a lot of money, but I will work my fingers to the bone for Roger, Bill, Larry, Richard and all the other Dems stepping up to challenge the Repubican incumbents. We have an especially nasty bunch from NC.
What is health care infrastructure like for low income individuals? What are the greatest needs in health?
cc – used spell check this time.
Roger at 86 — I think most states are having that problem the last couple of years due to budgetary constraints. We’re even seeing it here where I live in West Virginia, and that’s with everything that Robert Byrd does to make certain we get our share of highway funds. There is no give for funding distribution, thanks to the Iraq expenditures, and I am afraid it is going to get a whole lot worse without some accountability and some changes. That’s why it is so important to get you elected!
Foxx is the worst of the worst.
When she was in the North Carolina state legislature, there was one year when a special session went on for most of the summer. Because the special session required only members of a couple of committees to be present, Foxx returned to her gated community and cashed every single per diem check sent to her for the duration of the special session (as if she had been in Raleigh the entire time.) I was absolutely appalled but apparently in North Carolina it is legal for legislators to do that. But try doing that as a regular state employee…. and it’s jail (as it should be).
One question for Roger:
Do you think that Vernon Robinson’s decision to run in NC-13 was designed to help Foxx? Plenty of NC-5 voters are going to see his crazy bigoted ads, and my gut feeling is that by having them come from an African-American candidate (albeit one who is basically crazy) Foxx isn’t having to play the bigot card herself in such an explicit way.
I’m out west, so it’s all cheap smears from Charlie Taylor here, but have you found that the Robinson campaign next door is affecting things on the ground in your district?
Refresh helped in seeing Lotus’ question.
I think that it is important that when you sent on any adjudicatory body that hear the evidence presented and base the judgement on that. I think it would not be responsible to say “off with his head” without such a procedure.
Thank you, Mr. Sharpe. Helped out as much as I am able on this day. I will be following the suggestion mentioned in comment #69 and spotlight this post to John Edwards.
Howie, Nice choice on Nina Simone who was born in Tryon, North Carolina.
Cozumel @

Time to feel the spirit of Sam Ervin, Cozumel.
pseudononymous. I don’t think so. I think that Foxx will be able to use her own tools in the election without benefit of Robinson. Foxx voted against the Voting RIghts Act, and it makes you wonder how Robinson handles that.
I am sooo broke right now (too many impulse buys of mock-Lieberman URLs) but come next Friday, I’ll kick in some cash !
Time for one last question. I have to make a trip across a couple counties for a BBQ supper in Yadkinville.
CHR at 92 is very correct in that money that goes to bombs and such creates nothing and add nothing to the economy and put nothing back into it. I am for a well equiped military since I have a nephew in Kabul but there won’t be much for him to come home too at this rate. Veterans medical care is one of those things Rummy doesn’t seem to worry about planning for either.
pseudonymous in nc @ 98
I feel it ; )
Roger,
Is there anything beyond contributig we can do to help you? I’m in Texas.
Welcome Roger and Hey Howie,
I’m in, and wish you godspeed and every success, Roger, from a fellow Tar Heel.
Great blog session, Roger!
Dang, I love B-B-Q! If they are friendly folks it should be fun! Best of Luck Roger!
Thanks for coming by today, Roger. Best of luck and don’t be a stranger!
pseudononymous, through the network try to speak with anybody you know in this district and put in a good word where you can.
just know that we are working tirelessly to win this election come November 7th.
Let this be our legacy for future generations; that we took America back from the polluters, the greedy, the mean-spirited, and the corrupted and returned it to the people.
Thank you FireDogLake and Howie for your time here today. It has been a pleasure talking with people across the country who care about democracy and our current state of affairs.
I must hit the road. Thank you again for your time, attention, and support.
Thanks, Roger, and good luck. Oh, and the crucial question for NC BBQ: vinegar or tomato?
We’re very close to Roger’s goal of being able to do a targeted mailing
Come on puppy dogs! Lets get Sharpe in the House!
Thanks, Roger! Happy to contribute.

Probably David Ray Griffin and his books have been discussed. I was doing an “escape” breakfast at my local cafe and read this article in one of my community newspapers. Not relaxed anymore. This is worth the time:
Sorry,I just realized I barged in. I’ll try to enter tonight.

David Ray Griffin gravely asserts that the U.S. government was complicit in the 9/11 attacks.

Bye, Roger, thanks for your sensible replies, and best of luck in kicking Vile Virginia’s patootie in November.
Roger Sharpe @ 58
Just wanted to add, now that Roger’s off to find some good pulled pork, that this is a huge issue in NC-11 as well, particularly as Charles Taylor is: a) a millionaire logger; b) chairman of the Interior Dept Appropriations Committee. The Parkway is a national treasure, but it’s also an artery for the west of the state, and there’s been such a culture of short-termism towards it in Congress, and that needs to change.
I must say that is people like Roger Sharpe that gives one hope for this country. I will say that too to the folks who participate here. Thank you.
Thank you, Mr. Sharpe and Howie!
pseudo’nc, my bet: vinegar.
Not to sure how to spotlight John Edwards. This looks like a good way to reach him.

Just used your contact and told Edwards to himself over there and lend support.
Well, now that today’s guest candidate has departed, I am going to post an idea EPU’d on the previous thread.

Awfully strange that they should involve AA negatively in this as the CEO is, so too was the previous one, major donor and fundraiser to the GOP.
jinny @ 123
they should have thought of this before they filmed their propaganda
Hey, this Path to 9/11 movie is the best written thing in the world. Yummy!

Progressive Democrat Jonathan Tasini opposes Hillary Clinton – check him out, New Yorkers.
Kos has the Aussie? promo trailer for the “Official True Story” Where do I sign-on to be a plaintiff?
Anybody else been watching ABC this morning? I’ve been watching the NCAA pre-game and Washington-Oklahoma game for over two hours. NOT ONE PROMO for the PT911 agitprop. Anybody see any promos for the show on their ABC outlets?
Might or might not mean something……
Creeping Truth @ 242
Many are wondering how a defamation action against PT911 looks from down in the trenches. You can’t do better than “Defamation Law and Procedure re PT9/11″ by The Crusty Bunker, posted today on KOS. The link is: http://www.dailykos.com/user/uid:66265.

Bush Confident GOP Will Hold Congress
Dismissing the possibility the top House Democrat, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, could rise to House speaker if the GOP lost its majority, the president said, “That’s not going to happen.”

Having mentioned the words “highjacker Atta”, I am hoping that American Airlines has some automated scanning system set up for their incoming customer service comments that will elevate mine to the top of the heap.
I really think this might be a way to move ABC off the dime — another major global conglomerate (whose first name is American!) coming down hard on ABC because of how they are portrayed. ABC is much more likely to view AA’s complaint favorably than ours, or even BigDog’s. Shameful, really, but there you are!
Can you imagine being the person who worked at Logan Airport that day finding that he/she is portrayed this way? How horrible!
More at Americablog, if you wanna check it out.
ET—you may well be on to something. Let’s see if the half-time ads validate your theory.
Go Huskies!
John at americablog has the film and just gave a brief review of the “Sandy Burger” stuff. IMHO ABC/DISNEY are really fucked.
John just put a post at Americablog about the final scene with Sandy Berger, he says it’s how the first half ends, it can’t be cut.
http://americablog.blogspot.com/
halftime at ABC’s coverage of UW-OU football game. this is where they would usually run at least one promo for the PT911 show. If they don’t run a halftime promo, something may be afoot….
Bustednuckles @ 131
Mr. President: It IS going to happen. Get used to it.
RBG @ 133
RBG! Recovered from Bumbershoot yet? I hope all went well!
Damn good game so far. Watched my son’s HS football team, ranked #2 in Alaska cream their cross-town rival, which HAD been ranked #3, yesterday evening.
a 2-night unsponsored film is a BIG FUCKING DEAL — one would expect ABC to be hyping the hell out of this piece of $40,000,000 shit …
Even if Disney dioes pul it at the last minute, I’m not willing to forget about this. There should’ve never been a question about it.
Back when we first learned that the govt was requiring phone companies to provide access to and lists of US calls to NSA, some suggested that state Public Utilities Commissions investigate the practices of the telecoms they regulated. Well, the Connecticut Dept of Public Utility Control (PUC) thought that was a worthwhile investigation and ordered the phone companies to tell the PUC what they were doing, and who within the company was responsible. Now the US DoJ has gone to court to prevent the state regulators from finding out, on grounds of national security.
http://www.courant.com/news/lo…..ines-local
For backgroud, fdl folks should know that state regulators are very jealous of their jurisdiction and there is nothing they hate more than to have the feds tell them they can’t do their jobs to protect folks in their own states. The Connecticut DPUC was already upset at federal energy regulators, and now they’ll be upset at the US DoJ wrt to their jurisdiction over telecommunications companies.
This is an important states’ rights issue in many states — and we’re talking about Connecticut, not Mississippi or Alabama.
another ‘cost’ to ABC is the foregone revenue from advertising during that time slot. $40,000,000 plus five hours of no-revenue national broadcast time is not trivial…
TeddySanFran – Just emailed AA. Another good catch!
*ilson46201 @ 139
$40,000,000 sh.. Is what it is.
*ilson46201 @ 142
You could even build a bridge halfway to nowhere for that kind of bucks.
Boy, with the CA Attorney General saying “crimes were committed” at Hewlett Packard when their private investigator pre-texted members of the Board of Directors and journalists, I bet the lady running HP is really happy this Mouse stuff is happening, otherwise there’d be a lot more focus on her this week. Emergency HP BoD meeting tomorrow, btw…..

It sure does Matt. So many times one can feel so alone and it’s good to know there are people fighting for our rights.
Here is a snippet of good news from Arkansas. My family farmed soybeans (rice, wheat, cotton, green beans and sorghum) and let me just say we produce plenty of soybeans!
ET-excellent weather, good crowds, and some stellar acts all led to a great weekend. The recovery process takes a little longer each year but a quiet weekend should help get me back on my feet.
UW-OU half-time is now over and nary a word about PT9/11. Hmmmm…
CNN just showed a screen shot of Taylor Marsh’s blog, re: ABC thing
Eureka Springs, AR @ 143
I gotta credit aravosis at Americablog with the watching of PT911 and telling his readers about the first few minutes. But the links and the comment to American are mine.
Keep it up, folks.
Another idea — call your cable company today and ask how to block ABC, ESPN, ABC Family, and the Disney channel…. even if you know how! That ties up the cable people, cuts into their customer service phonetime, makes an impact. Let them know why you are blocking!~
John @ http://americablog.blogspot.com/ has some incredible PT(Barnum)9/11 info.

9/11 Politics
WASHINGTON — The unusual Democratic outrage over ABC-TV’s “The Path to 9/11″ film to be shown Sunday and Monday reflects private concern in the party that the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack can reverse the political tide running against Republicans.
Republican strategists figure they benefited from a little political break Aug. 28 when U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle in Washington agreed to a joint motion by defense and prosecution lawyers to postpone the sentencing of disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Abramoff, who in January pleaded guilty to corruption charges, had been scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing before Huvelle last Wednesday. The reason stated by the Justice Department in agreeing to Abramoff’s request for a delay was his cooperation with prosecutors, resulting in the conviction of former Bush administration officials.

I take that as a threat.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 153
That is good news! We, in our family, still do dry-land cotton and winter wheat. I love Arkansas.
Just a quick point about the foreign Path advertisment (English, I believe). The defamation laws are MUCH more strict abroad — it is much easier to win a serious defamation judgment in, for example, England than America. Disney will be wiping these guys bottoms with their profits for years to come.

I guess the NYT didn’t think to mention bloggers in their article or 200,000 signatures…

A September 9 New York Times article by reporter Jesse McKinley attributed growing criticism over ABC’s “docudrama” The Path to 9/11, as well as calls for its cancellation, exclusively to members of the Clinton administration and Democratic officials. In fact, the film has been criticized for its factually inaccurate and misleading portrayal of the Clinton administration’s handling of the terrorist threat by people from across the political spectrum, including journalists and participants in the film’s production as well as a number of conservative commentators, as Media Matters for America has documented.

some wag commented that after the lawsuits are finished, ABC will stand for Albright, Berger, Clinton …
I’m going to keep a TV on ABC today. They’re doing football-football wrapup-football-football wrapup-desperate housiwives-24. Seems like that would present many opportunities to promote tomorrow’s big show, wouldn’t you think.?
ccmask at 158 –
Once again– page one of the Rove playbook: Every real set back for Republicans must be claimed and publicized as a political victory that will stop the Democtratic surge.
DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
And with tv, the internet, and all that, “You (we) Are There” as Walter Cronkite used to say.
*ilson — I like the way that wag thinks!

Ed*ard Teller @ 165
Ed*ard Teller, I remember reading SOMEWHERE that their lawyers had halted promotion. I can’t find the link now, but I know I didn’t imagine it.
ccmask @ 158
Well well well, isn’t that interesting. This is exactly why this whole mess all week has pissed me off, while we have to concentrate on protecting America and our children from blatant propaganda tons of important things are being marginalized that we could be covering more in depth. On the other hand it is putting the facts of 9-11 out there to be scrutinized with a fine tooth comb that is much needed.

I live in Asheville but just heard about you today from Mark Hufford, the DNC’s WNC organizer who accompanied you on your recent tour. Mark was down here to do a canvass with us for our sheriff candidate and our NC House candidate.
Mark had great things to say about you and your campaign. Thank you for running and I’ll find some $ to chip in too.
I am so delighted Roger, my Congressional candidate, has popped to the surface in the cyber world. My support began before the primary and I am glad to see he will now be getting some assistance from blogistan.
