Late to the show, here - but - that should be “lederhosen” (literally, leather pants). In German, leder = leather; lieder = songs; leider = sorrows.

I would suggest for the sake of snark, leiderhosen (sorrowpants).

The Canadian government was aware that there were no links between Hussein and Al-Qaeda. Whe wouldn’t the US Government listen to their purported closest Ally? (I am against the Iraq War, but do support the War in Afghanistan …)

Has it occurred to anyone that this is really a case of “cover your ass” by the Republican candidates? Many, even Rick Santorum have spent the summer running from Pres. Bush and now they can point at this report (the same report that was delayed during the 2004 cycle for purely partisan reasons by Pat Roberts) and proclaim “Hey, I only voted for the war because of what the Pres told me. I wasn’t the one that lied. I’m not to blame!” Sure this was the same reasoning that many Dems used in 2004 but that was when so many were deluded by our media into thinking that Bush as credible. Back when the pundits thought Bush was a great guy and told everyone that they wanted to have a beer. Before Chris Mathews went from “only the whackos don’t like Bush” to Tucker “this was a mistake”. Sure as hell you will find one Republican after another have their own Road to Damascus moment, and suddenly proclaim that they were lied to by Bush.

Am I a lurker if all I do is enjoy the blog, have never commented, but I do follow the rules by sending off emails composed by me, letters composed by me, and make phone calls from me without talking points created by someone else?

Today has been one huge discovery after another, and here is where I have, mostly, followed them all. What a day for those of us who believe a change is long overdue!

Anne @ 85

Well, as me to me points out above, this is already being spun as “old news,” and I think Tony Snow (bet he’s got a closet full of yellow ties) hit the podium today with the tired old talking point that the entire Congress knew what the intelligence was, blah, blah, blah, what’s everyone all excited about? Just another Friday afternoon in Washington, right?

But I think it will not be long – and I suspect it will be the blogs that have to do the heavy lifting – before there is a side-by-side comparison between what the report reveals and what was being spoon-fed to Congress, and to us.

And I can’t help but think that, despite the “ho-hum” theme that is being pushed, that lots of GOP Senators and Representatives are hitting the campaign trail this weekend and will be fending off questions about the report that they do not want to have to answer.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like the White House has known that this report was coming out, and would not be kind to them, and so, they hit the circuit for some tough-talking speeches, made sure to demonize the liberals, and raised the specter of Nazis and jackboots. Jesus, these people just do not get it, and I am sick to death of being branded a terrorist-lover because I want us to bring our kids home from a war that should never have been undertaken, have a real foreign policy that isn’t just about guns and ammo, and I want my civil liberties protected from those who can’t seem to accrue power any other way.

I’m also sick of 9/11 anniversaries that have become little more than ratings-wars and bonanzas for the media. They don’t have to show me the pictures, really they don’t. I can close my eyes and re-live almost every minute of that day, starting with the first report of the first plane hitting the WTC, to watching the TV in someone’s office as the second one hit, while my kids were at school, and my husband was out of town, and downtown Baltimore was gridlock, to the fear when the Pentagon was hit, knowing I was only 40 miles from DC. I remember it quite well, thank you.

And all my government seems to have done ever since is take a tragedy and turn it into something that has failed to honor the lives lost and forever changed, and they have done it for reasons that have had less to do with patriotism and courage, and too much to do with power and greed and opportunism.

/rant (for now, anyway)

Excellent rant. I, too, remember all-too-well what was happening 37 miles away from me that day, and five years has not dimmed the memory all that much. Thank you.
