I bought my first convertible a few years ago. I drive around LA with the top up. I didn’t really realize that it was going to mess with my hair. I’ve been saying to myself, I’ll drive it to Vegas…put a scarf on my head, cruise the strip. Well three years later and I’m finally doing it this weekend.
Vegas is great…for no more than 48 hours. It’s super exciting arriving in Vegas… the lights, the sound of the slot machines but I always find myself in fast motion getting the hell out of there when the din of the casinos start to orchestrate my nightmare.
But while I’m still digging it I love going to see a show, an old school Vegas show. I’ve seen Cirque Du Soleil there, which I normally like, but not in Vegas…theater seating, no cocktails and all those families…no thanks. Give me a half circle booth watching a flashy Vegas entertainer with a live band, "keep the cocktails coming" and I’m in seventh heaven. I’ve seen some great performers and the experience of seeing them wouldn’t have been as good anywhere else than Vegas…Charo (totally off the hook), Tom Jones (whose voice is still great), Don Rickles (I was literally crying with laughter), and the awesome spectacles of Siegfried and Roy, and Jubilee.
This time I probably won’t be seeing any shows because I’ve got other priorities. I’m going with a real live gambler. A serious gambler, which I’m also excited and intrigued about. I haven’t really experienced that side of Vegas too much. I’ll get some pointers, play some Blackjack and take advantage of the free cocktails whilst he burns down the nest egg.
I’d love to hear The Spin You’re In in the comments section.

Playlist Notes: This latest installment of Donita Sparks’ The Spin I’m In is the soundtrack for the perfect end of summer road trip. With this playlist you could skip the road trip and escape on the road inside your mind. Kick back, relax and let your mind wander to those out of the way places, roadside diners, motels in the middle of nowhere and attractions like the World’s Largest Beehive that you remember from those lame trips Mom and Dad took you on as a child that you miss so much. |

HUGE story about the true origins and source of money behind Path to 9/11:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/9/8/133335/7036
Donita! Woohoo 1st comment!
damn xyz is quicker than me.
Word. I’m out for the rest of the day, but check out the link above.
This story could be the last straw for ABC.
You gotta hand it to someone who can put BRMC, Eno, and Tom Jones on the same list.
When are you gonna play L.A. again?
YearlyKos 2007!
Viva Las Vegas baby!
“King’s Lead Hat” is on my favourite road trip playlist, between my buddy Rich Morel’s “Making Sense” and U2’s “Vertigo” — which really should be on any trip to Las Vegas playlist, IMHO.
That Kos link is some first rate investigative reporting. The toobz and rootz never cease to amaze me.
I was a big Delilah fan when I was a wee Inca lad. I had the 45.

I have a show at the Viper Room in LA on Saturday Sept. 16th.
James Hall is also on the bill. Thanks for asking, come on down
Donita you sooo rock!
scory @ 7
King’s Lead Hat is such a jam.
I hope some of you out there are appreciating that awesome Tom Jones video. Now that’s what I call a protest number! OFF THE HOOK
*xyz @ 1
xyz,
You’re right, this is HUGE. So can we now claim that the film is being secretly funded by laundered money from a right-wing group which is training youth for paramilitary operations against our government?
YWAM is connected to some scary groups whose thinking almost mirrors that of Tim McVeigh.
Thanks Donita for the video– I loooove Tom Jones– what a voice! I can’t count how many times I have sung along with him at full volume (mine and his!)
Have fun.
YHAM is trying to pull up stakes on their web presence as fast a they can. I think there is a big problem here for ABC if the laundered $ crossed international borders (ie – USA to Canada to the USA).
YWAM– hmmm.
Wonder how all of the brown people will be portrayed in this mockumentary.
I’ve had American Idiot on heavy rotation in the car, ’cause I’ve found myself screaming at the radio way too much lately.
Like when CBS radio ran a segment yesterday that all but said “it was all Armitage” featuring their “security consultant.” (Why was it done by the “security consultant” rather than their “legal consultant?” I’ve acquired a nagging suspicion based on recent results that all media “security consultants” are Republican plants.)
Donita
You must “cry with laughter” choosing these videos! The dancers in this one are genius. lol
Love to know what your second choice was. ha!
Love Brian Eno! Used to listen to him back when I was just out of high school…along with League of Gentlemen, which was also really good, just wish they had done more stuff.
So many good Eno songs…Baby’s on Fire, Fat Lady of Limberg, and of course Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch hehe.
Are people getting screen shots of the YHAM stuff before it disappears?
my spin – Mickey Mouse club bangers edition
All hail Donita!
To celebrate The Week of the Rat, I rounded up a wonderful world of pixiedust tracks from my record collection…
Who Killed Bambi? – The Sex Pistols…
Action speaks louder than words – Chocolate Milk… This little funk bomb goes out to Ms. Nix, for taking action.
Ya Playin’ Yourself – Jeru the Damaja… “you’re a playa but only because you be playin’ yourself”
She Watch Channel Zero – Public Enemy… “Her brains retrained by a 24 inch remote”
Mickey Mouse is Dead – Subhumans … pretty much sums it up, don’t it?
“we’re gonna have so much fun you’ll all be whistling zip-a-dee-doo-dah out your assholes”
- Clark Griswold, National Lampoon’s Vacation
Of course Jane is on a plane when you need her … :)
But it’s my understanding that the accounting involving film and television production is notoriously complicated. Tracing YMAH money to the production company and ABC may be quite a challenge.

Count me as another Eno / “King’s Lead Hat” fan – it rawks, in that unique Eno way (it’s also an homage to Talking Heads, hence the anagram title… guessing everyone knew this already). His “Third Uncle” is also a jam, with a classic bass line.

Speaking of spin –I’m really stretching in my OTs today. I visited the ABC News site to see what they had to say about the Path to 911 “documentary”. Their most recent story was from yesterday and was entitled “Clintonistas Claim Foul Over ABC 9/11 Film” by John Cochran. Anyone who uses “Clintonistas” pretty much has told you where they are coming from. Cochran gives ABC’s now standard disclaimer that it is a “dramatization not a documentary” but it is not until page two that any specific examples of falsehoods are given. The article ends:
You see it’s not that they’re lying but that it is an emotional subject and yes, a few misguided people will express those emotions by becoming angry but that’s really not their fault, is it? Coincidentally, since ABC is a Disney company, Marc Platt’s nose grew six inches during his statement. As for the rest, it’s the “all publicity is good publicity” mantra coupled with the tired old saw that if we’re making both sides angry then we must be doing something right. No, John Cochran, I hate to break this to you but sh*t smells the same whether you’re on the right or the left.

Just the other day I was mentioning how I pitied people who owned convertibles but never put the top down because it messed up their hair. Sad. It’s a waste of a good convertible to drive around with the top up when it’s even marginally nice weather. Hell, I used to drive my ‘67 Mustang with the top down when it was snowing!

Oh, Donita, those are awesome, in a bizarro way.
It’s a little disconcerting to go back to the song about a mudering psycho stalker killer with the benefit of adult wisdom, however. Sometimes there’s so much that’s wrong with a thing like this, especially the video, that it’s oddly perfect.

Ed*ard Teller, I’ve been saving the cached documents I could find. Names, addresses, phone numbers, separate addresses for mailing “donations”…it’s all very interesting.
Firepups, there is work to do on PT911 (Path to 9/11) — the fact that the whole thing is a project of a Christianist group “Youth With a Mission,” whose film unit set this up as the “Untitled History Project” (UHP) and indeed ABC first searched for actors under the title “Untitled ABC History Project.”
Furthermore, the ABC miniseries still had the YWAM title “Untitled History Project” as recently as June 5 as shown on this Google-cached web page of the Donnie Wahlberg website. (The actual web page has been scrubbed, as apparently hav been all YWAM web pages relating to the making of their project, The Path to 9/11.)
A huge number of links can be found in the comments section of this Kos diary: Christian YWAM $$$ behind PT911
And there’s a lot more work to do.

If you’re in a convertable, skip the scarf. Scarf-wearing women in convertables get decapitated every year when their scarf, wrapped around their head and neck, floats down to the wheel, catches on something and then yanks down with the full force and speed of the car.

Lindy, what more can you tell us?
Yesterday and this morning we were all upset at ABC/Disney for planning to air this lying faceumentary and writing e-mails and making phone calls.
And now it turns out that the TV show is a project of a right-wing, Christianist extremist group and we’re not on it?
‘Scuse me for shouting. But digging is what the blogs do best and here are places where the digging is revealing much more about “Path to 9/11″ than any of us suspected two days ago.
This is surely bigger than the right wing’s score two years ago on Dan Rather, isn’t it? Doesn’t this have the potential to help motivate our base for the coming election?
More details:

Who posted that?
That’s Hellacious Dee from Toronto, Canada, in her MySpace blurb.

(Can you tell that my kid is making his parents very, very aware that there’s a birthday coming up soon?)
Shorter version (model letter):
Dear _______ (ABC, George Mitchell, Disney, MSM),
I am concerned that “The Path to 9/11″ has been revealed by investigative reporters to be the made-for-TV movie originally titled “The Untitled History Project” and created by a right-wing, Christianist organization called “The Film Institute,” an “auxiliary branch” of “Youth With a Mission” (YWAM) — established by the father of the film’s director.
This is, in short, a project that was pitched to ABC and Disney, not a project of their own.
And it appears that a great deal of deception was involved in pitching it.
Unless ABC itself was in on the fraud.
Please investigate.
Sincerely,
etc.
Peterr: none. She’s like that. I say, “Can you help?” and she asks no questions. She trusts my judgment and my politics, though she was once a Goldwater Girl.
SOS….Anyone available for some help? Excuse me, but I’m butting in here with a request for some quick help. It is Saturday morning here in NZ (7:45) and I have just come out of tv ignorance to realize that The Path to 9/11 is scheduled to show tomorrow night here. That is of course, ahead of the release there. I tried to call the TV station, but so far, I get recordings that say that they have gone home for the weekend and call on Monday. It is one of the charms of NZ, I suppose.
Anyway, I called the news bureau and they asked me to send them an email, that summarized the controversy and with appropriate links to help them get a sense of it.
Can you help a groggy expat who is coming to all of this rather late to put together a concise narrative, with less partisan links?
If so, I would really appreciate this. I’ll keep tuned for any possible suggestions.

OT – The Roots Project is relaunching the SRP Newsweekly podcast in its beta phase episodes this Sunday and we need help from the public with a segment we are doing on the 5th anniversary of 9/11. We have setup our new blog which the podcast will be distributed from every Sunday at http://srpnewsweekly.wordpress.com and there you will find a thread about our effort to memorialize the anniversary by sharing your memories of 9/11 or your thoughts on the anniversary via our podcast.
At that blog you will find more info on how you can leave a message in our voicemail newstip line for inclusion in our podcast. Or you can leave a comment in the thread and one of our SRP News team members will read your comment as part of our segment.
Thanks for your help with this in advance and I look forward to hearing from you all about this. This is the first step we are taking to truly give voice to the netroots community, literally.
Here is the SPIN I’m in and have been in for weeks!

If you like the sample selections of the Tim Krekel cd featured at the above site check out Tim’s website for all of his cd’s. His music is really hard to classify. His songs run the range from blues, country rock, R&B and good old fashioned Rock n Roll.
I absolutely LOVE this guys music. Alan Jackson is doing one of Krekel’s songs on his soon to be released cd and Martina McBride recorded one of the songs sampled at the above site (Cry on the Shoulder of the Road). If you are looking for something new to listen to this weekend, check out Tim Krekel. Fortunately for me he was born in Louisville and lives here and in Nashville. I got to see him perform twice this week and he is playing this Saturday at a Blues festival in Carrollton, KY.

OTOH, mine trusts my judgment in some things – like religion – but has definite questions about my politics. For the last year, though, she’s been a Red Cross volunteer, and what she’s seen there with regard to the government’s reactions post-Katrina has made her question me less.
Of course, one of the biggest gifts she gave me (and the one she’s proudest of) is that I ask lots of pointed questions – so I can’t really object to her questions of me!

What was Youth With a Mission doing on September 11, 2001:
“Hooked”
September 2001
By the family of a YWAM member
A member of my family has been involved with YWAM for a number of years. This group targets kids who truly want to work for Christ, isolates them far from their families and home churches, and convinces them that they are “missionaries” doing important work for God.
Once people are hooked, YWAM then preys on them financially. The kids themselves have to raise the money to pay for their training and supposed mission work.

Prof @ 67
That’s the part I’m most interested in. And I haven’t found any more yet than you already listed, though I keep looking.
The thing about YWMA sends chills up my spine, because their techniques of recruiting young people who really want to serve Christ, isolating them, indoctrinating them, having them do their own fundraising…all of that is a page out of Sun Myung Moon’s book. He did all that in the seventies and beyond. During the Watergate hearings, he had a large group of his followers on the steps of the Capitol building singing something about “The Generation of Righteousness” in support of Richard Nixon.
I have to admit I’m a (secret) Tom Jones fan. Yeah, what a voice. One of my faves is his version of “Tennessee Waltz” on the Chieftans album.
Also, “I (Who have Nothing).” Of course I might be biased as a friend wrote that one.
BTW “Viva Las Vegas” was written by Mort Schulman, who also wrote “Save the Last Dance for Me,” which was a hit both for the Drifters and EmmyLou.

When I tried to print out the reciept, Firefox crashed. I’m pretty sure it went through though.
It’s not much, I’m still getting back on my feet from the little episode in July.
But even if it’s not much, it made me feel good. I have been coming here a long time now.I truly feel like it’s the very least I can do.
Hopefully I’ll get to do it again next week.

Thanks for coming out of your closet with your “secret”. Nothing to be ashamed of my friend. Tom is The Bomb
Donita, thanks for the list. Sadly, the Air website doesn’t have a “no flash” option, so nothing to see there. As for what I like to listen to on road trips, I guess just about anything that isn’t dominated by country music or christian propoganda works for me. Every once in a while, there’s even a classical station left out there in America.
Of course, you can’t go too far wrong with the Beach Boys, U2, or Dick Dale, either.
Sorry we hijacked this thing talking about some silly TV show.
Morris Sheppard at 95,
Oh boy, what a great song. I saw EmmyLou in concert in maybe 1980, and that was it for me. Hooked. Her voice brings tears to my eyes sometimes, it’s so pure.
mods, please fix my last comment. I went back to fix it, but the time had expired. Sorry.

Yeah. I’ve had the honor of being around musicians when she’s sung and all of them, some pretty accomplished (and rather famous) in their own right, just stand in awe.
well i’m the oldest fogie on the internets, so i just now got into downloading music to my puter.
i’m getting into franz ferdinand and the killers just now. and hearing a commercial for the la county fair (where they will be appearing), i am reminded to start downloading some heart soon.
as the the spin i’m in, i just posted o superman by laurie anderson on my blog. the video holds up suprisingly well.
and here’s for all you tom jones fans:
guy walks into a doctor’s office, says, “doc, i keep hearing ‘the green green grass of home’ in my head.”
doctor says, “you’ve got tom jones-itis.”
guy says “is that normal?”
doctor says “it’s not unuusal.”
goodnight, folks, be sure to tip your waitresses!

Oh, man, I love his cover of “Kiss”! And thanks, Donita for the faboo and trippy video. You too, Millineryman. Boy, sometimes Tom can just really pick the material.
Got fond memories of my last trip to Burning Man a few years ago. The “bar” in our neighborhood was “The Tom Jones Panty Lounge and Instant Intimacy Spot.” Free drinks from our amiable (female) bartender if you contributed lingerie to the decor. TJ on the sound system. Good times, good times.

Agree strongly on both ABC and Bolton. It’s been a busy week. Although I can’t recall you and I ever having a drag-out fight. Am I missing something? And if we keep agreeing on stuff, it would be pointless to schedule one.
I’m gonna go play some guitar now.
You’ve got to have this Vegas song on any list:
“Ooh Las Vegas”, by Gram Parsons.
“the first time i lose i drink whiskey / second time i lose i drink gin
third time i lose i drink anything / ‘cuz i think i’m gonnna win!”
good luck!
