It’s been a heck of a week. Consider that it was only last Friday that we learned ABC was planning to broadcast its fictional, yet "based on the 9/11 Commission Report" docudrama, because Rush Limbaugh and all of wing-nuttery were singing the praises of "The Path to 9/11." I wonder what horrific end ABC is planning for the flak who had the idea to send advance copies to Rush et. al. Or maybe, the avowed right-winger screenwriter, Cyrus Nowrasteh, and director, David Cunningham, were so jacked up about the fast one they were about to pull on the American people, they couldn’t stop themselves from getting a little foreplay before the screw.
And now, look. Medialand is rightfully all a-buzz with this controversy because of all the hard work being done. Even ABC News reported today that the network was under an "avalanche of criticism from Democrats." It’s a rare treat to see the left come together so quickly and effectively. But we had to fight for the truth. We did not have a choice. We had to take a stand against ABC’s efforts to airbrush history, and peddle a fraudulent pic with pivotal scenes that old Cyrus saw fit to let actors completely improvise. Believe me, I know there’s plenty of blame to go around regarding 9/11. But this movie goes so far as to use fantasy scenes to smear the Clinton administration, while leaving out many true-to-life scenes that would lay blame on the current administration.
Let’s take a moment to congratulate ourselves. We got the word out, people. And that’s no small feat. But we ain’t done yet.
ABC’s statement today gives no sign that they will pull this mini-series, but they are supposedly making some final edits. Disney Board Chair George Mitchell is getting an earful in this 11th hour, but it remains to be seen how much power he’ll have.
This afternoon, Scholastic announced that they would be replacing the original "Path to 9/11" lesson plans with new ones that will focus on media literacy and critical thinking skills. That cannot be good for ABC. While it’s commendable that the folks at Scholastic showed the good judgment to actually think about what they will serve up to American classrooms, it ain’t all good news. They’ll still show this fraudulent movie, that relied on actors’ improvisations in many pivotal scenes, to communicate the narrative of this great American tragedy.
As they are frantically making up the new study guides, to be released tomorrow, I have a couple of suggestions.
Scholastic: If you simply cannot stop yourself from serving this propaganda up to America’s high school students, how about also showing "9/11 Press for Truth" as well. Allow teachers to lead discussions that will compare and contrast the two movies. You may not have heard about this movie , because it doesn’t have $30 million and a corporate network behind it, but it is a well-documented film, which does not fictionalize scenes but relies on interviews with those who were closest to what happened. The filmmakers have said this film features exclusive interviews with the families of 9/11 victims and 9/11 researcher Paul Thompson, author of the "The Terror Timeline," which pieces together stories from over 7000 media reports about 9/11.
I also sent this letter to Scholastic today:

Subject: congratulations on your decision to produce new Path to 9/11 materials
To: mailto:kgood@scholastic.com
Hi Kyle,I was very happy to see the release about the new study guides that will be made available tomorrow.
Might I make a suggestion that you could pass along to your writers/producers/educators working on those materials?
I have been a producer for NPR and staff writer for Variety, and written for a number of outlets over the years. In recent months, I have been working with a number of the progressive bloggers, in part because I am so excited about these new avenues for engaged citizens to better participate in the public debate.
It was the progressive blogs who launched and have led this campaign, since last Friday, to get ABC to reconsider this project, particularly when we learned that right-wing media and bloggers were given advance copies of the film, even as we were denied. Then we learned that even President Clinton and many of the prinicipals portrayed in the film were also denied advance copies. What we saw here were engaged citizens, through the blogs, investigating this story and organizing in real time, to help members of the professional media understand the backstory here and to ask tough questions.I think this would all make for a very interesting case study for high school students, as part of your "Path to 9/11" study materials.
I would suggest including in your materials bits from the sites below. Blogs are in their infancy, and the rules are being made up as we go along. But they are becoming more and more important to our media and democracy, in my opinion, and, in this case, they have played a major role in the developing story.

Any new updates in the donation drive for Wheeler’s book?
OT More truth; The Marcy meter doesn’t seem to be moving a lot today. Lack of input or broken meter?
I read a CNN story on this topic early today. No mention at all of the political leanings of the producers and proponents of the schlock-u-drama, nor a mention that it was provided to right-wing bloggers for preview. Gosh, they really put themselves out providing the context for that story. Pathetic.

One thing I have taken away from this whole experience, is the conspiracy of the right-wing that exists to alter this country into something alien. (not a conspiracy in the tinfoil hat sense, but in a coordinated, networked, quasi-legal sense).
One of the things I hope we can do going forward, once the smoke clears from this current episode, that is, is to ourselves coordinate an attack on this entire right-wing network. Attack their funding. Attack their reach in the media. Attack their apologists. Attack their enablers.
This is something the netroots is ideal for.
OMG…I did a post with this video 3 days ago…The Director came to my site and invited me to a screening in Austin, TX on Sept. 11th.
Anyone wanna go with?
Thank you Jennifer for getting the word out.
Sure feels better now than it used to, doesn’t it, me to me?
Great post, Jennifer! I love all the links, both to the other blogs and to the other movie.
We should spotlight this post to everyone who should be doing their homework on 9/11.
Perfect.

We may have to, since nobody else will.
OT: I was in Chicago today to see the archaeological evidence of New Kingdom Egyptian class warfare…er, I mean, the Tutankhamun exhibit at the Field Museum. Catch it if you can; it’s well worth it, and there are a lot of pieces from the tombs of Tut’s likely ancestors in addition to his own.
Good to see that ABC’s little propaganda piece is turning into the debacle it deserves to be for them.
Ahhh….premature prestidigitation.

Want? Totally. Can? Not even close, unfortunately…
Hi All–Be sure to check the links to 9/11 Press for the Truth. The movie is opening to day. I’m running over to Oakland now to see a viewing. But press for this movie. It’s a true antidote to all the spin and stonewalling.
Jennifer, great work you’ve done over the last few days and a very good proposal to Scholastic. I hope they have the good sense to understand the implications of your offer. We are not going away.

Jennifer- huge thanks for this article.
There were a lot comments on the Late Nite thread yesterday/today about Scholastic (see there, if you wish). I got to poking around on the Scholastic site, and imo, this is not the first time that they have swallowed propaganda hook, line and sinker. Two links follow.

It may seem like yesterday that our nation was on edge, waiting for an announcement of war with Iraq. Now the war is over, Saddam Hussein has been removed from power, and the people of Iraq are struggling to rebuild their war-torn land. []
Objective: Students will explore the history of America’s conflict with Iraq using a time line dating back to Saddam Hussein’s rise to power.
Getting Ready: Point out to students that the friction between the United States and Iraq did not happen overnight. In fact, trouble has been brewing for well over a decade. ~~~

Jennifer, your leadership on ABC’s treason has been extraordinary. I hope the Mouse has learned something from the ‘lake this week — we’re here now and we’re not gonna stand for this shit anymore.

The Bushaholics have gotten so used to framing and controlling events and media that they assumed they’d be able to carry off this Dem- bashing the same way. Frame it as, see when Dems were in charge, look how they screwed up. Part of their grand scheme to “terra, terra, terra” all the way to election day.
Sorry if I’m being redundant–flying by via dinosaur dialup [with apologies to TRex]–haven’t read the earlier threads.

Teddy,
Asking viewers to judge for themselves whether the movie is fact or fiction is akin to push polling. We know that much of the public is swayed by whatever they are told that looks authentic or that fits or reinforces their own pre-concieved notions.
It is a totally fatuous answer to a serious query that has been put to the stations. Don’t let them get away with that!

I sent three emails to the local ABC affiliate in OKC, which, in my opinion, were very well reasoned letters objecting to a gift to the Republican Party during a superheated election season by catering to the default position of the party of personal responsibility–It’s Bill Clinton’s fault.

OT – So far the only piece I’ve seen, but it would probably be the definitive one, even if there were many. Ray McGovern at Tom Paine re: the Torture Revelations (via Larry Johnson’s No Quarter)
The question everyone is ducking – what about our torturers? Lederman has touched on it too, but in an analysis of the pending legislation. Ray just says – without regard to the trial of KSM, why aren’t we talking about what happens about torture done pursuant to Exec Authorization?
I’m guessing you just keep running legislation through Specter and putting the folks like Bybee, Haynes & Co on the court. I’m waiting for the lovely epistle from everyone in the AG’s office recommending Addington for USSCT, along with a resurrection of Padilla.
Keep in mind, the pro-torture assault has a lot of different fronts. Tossing Arar and al-Masri as state secrets; military commission rules to allow torture testimony; a pass with Salah on maybe just get them looking good and prop up Judy Miller to testify and pretend it didn’t happen; torture act amendments; claims of “good faith reliance” on OLC opinions, court packing with Bybee,Kavanaugh, Haynes, etc.; assaults on the whole of the JAG system – led by Addington and Cheney; war crimes act amendments; challenges to enforcement issues in respect of the Geneva Conventions; and then there’s the biggest and most insidious:
Just do it, claim it as a wonderful indication of how tough you are and own a DOJ that won’t even have one person pipe up. When you own the prosecution mechanism, it doesn’t really matter what the law is or should be, and when you can publicize your crimes to acclaim, then what?

White House Opposed Formation of Commission: President Bush and Vice President Cheney both contacted then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle in the months after 9/11 to insist on strict limits in the scope of any investigation into the attacks. Newsweek reported on February 4, 2002, that Vice President Cheney called Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) to “warn” him not to open hearings into the attacks. If Daschle pressed the issue, Cheney “implied he would risk being accused of interfering with the mission” against terrorism. And despite entreaties from the families of victims of 9/11 attacks and a bipartisan group of senators and congressmen, the president vocally resisted forming an investigatory commission. President Bush only relented on November 27, 2002, a year after the attacks.

Jonathan Hogan and Patrick Preblick:
Just saw the ABC statement about “The Path to 9/11.” Unfortunately, it ignores many of the key concerns people have about your project. We’ve put together a clearinghouse site, to help you better understand the many issues at play here.
http://openlettertoabc.blogspot.com/
I also saw on Rawstory.com, Jonathan, that you say many of the people who are criticizing the film have not yet seen it. Indeed! We’ve not seen it because you’ve refused to make copies available, even after you said last week that you would. And we are only calling out certain scenes that have been reported by people who have seen the film. In particular, we are quoting from reports and reviews made by right-wing partisans to whom you did see fit to show the film.
From Hugh Hewitt, another right-wing pundit that ABC apparently has time to communicate with, I learned that that producers have been assuring right-wing partisans that any edits to the film will barely be noticable, and that the project will still blame Clinton. Is Hewitt reporting fact?
Here is something, from our Open Letter to ABC project that may illustrate to you how irresponsible and indefensible ABC’s actions are. Remember back in 2003, when Republicans objected to the CBS production, The Reagans? Here are some comments from Republicans at the time. More can be found at our web site.
Ed Gillespe, RNC Chairman — Scarborough Country, 11/6/2003 (via Lexis)
GILLESPIE: And I think it was important that it be historically accurate. And if they didn’t intend to make it historically accurate to make surethat viewers understood that it was not intended to be historically accurate but a fictional portrayal. So we made two requests: One is having historians review it for accuracy if you’re going to broadcast it. And if you’re unwilling to do that, inform the viewers that it’s not historically accurate. That’s not censorship, that’s common sense. . .
I’ve sent a similar letter to the head of Showtime making the same point: “If you’re not willing to have it reviewed for historical accuracy, make sure your viewers understand that it’s a fictional portrayal. You know, in this society that we live in and with the media culture that we have, there’s infotainment and docudrama and reality TV, and the lines between fact and fiction blur. That’s fine when it’s entertainment, but when you’re talking about the formative phase of the Reagan legacy formation, I think that it’s important that we get things right. . . .
I think that same standard should apply to the late president John F. Kennedy or to Jimmy Carter or any president. If you’re going to portray a presidency and a president, I think you should do all you can to make sure it’s accurate. . . .

Well, fine, but how could CBS green light the film in the first place knowing that the producers, the director and the featured actors are all left wing thinkers?
That would be like CBS commissioning a movie about the Clintons written by Rush Limbaugh and starring Dennis Miller and Ann Coulter.
I hope this helps to inform your efforts, Jonathan. Even some conservative commentators are admitting that ABC is out on a limb here. You really need to address public concerns in a meaningful and responsible way.

Thank you SO MUCH for that list of key executives at Disney!
Do you mind explaining how you came upon them? Maybe I was dense while looking, but I wasn’t able to tumble on that list, and would be curious to know the best method for finding key execs at any corporation.
This question applies not just to the current travesty we’re trying to halt. Many times I want to be able to write to “decision makers” at corporations, and it always seems to me that many of the largest corps go out of their way to design websites which (intentionally) make it difficult to find that information.
There ought to be some sort of easily accessible database for that sort of information, if only for the “insiders” and Wall Street “playahs” to be able to put their finger on it when they need it. [Of course, there are probably prohibitively expensive “subscription” sources out there.]
Am just wondering if you have tips for how to slog through the website “fluff” to get down to the nitty gritty of “movers and shakers.”
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 29
I went immediately to read it Stephen, then put the kids down. To bed, I mean.
The feeling I got after reading the piece was that Armitage was shown a document (NIE?) that basically burned Plame, and he was used as the unwitting bag boy. Then Rove et al pressed the point hard with the media, assured that they weren’t the primary leakers.

“ABC is preparing to make a terrible mistake by showing “The Path to 9/11.” This program is distorted, unbalanced, and in some respects outright wrong. It is Right Wing Republican propaganda. If ABC broadcasts this program, I am going to join with many other people in boycotting the products advertised on ALL of ABC’s programs (since they won’t tell us who is paying for “The Path to 9/11″)–as well as ALL DISNEY PRODUCTS. Also, is there a way to create my own preferred list, to be used each time? I confess I’m still learning its capabilities, but it’s a powerful tool. Thanks for asking.

Laying Blame and Passing the Buck, Dramatized
By ALESSANDRA STANLEY
“THE first words spoken on “The Path to 9/11” are at check-in at Logan Airport at 7:13 a.m. “O.K., Mr. Atta,” an American Airlines agent says over the clickety-clack of computer keys. “One way, nonstop to Los Angeles, no return.”
Moments before American Airlines Flight 11 hits its target, ABC’s mini-series pivots back 8 years to a Ryder rental van that blew up in the parking garage of the World Trade Center on Feb. 26, 1993.
And the events leading up to disaster unfold like a spy thriller. The two-part narrative, which ABC is scheduled to broadcast Sunday and Monday night, follows a few men and women who took the Osama bin Laden threat seriously and devoted their careers to battling it. Many are real, like the former F.B.I. counterterrorism expert John P. O’Neill, who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and who is played by Harvey Keitel. A few are composites, like an intrepid C.I.A. officer with the code name Kirk (Donnie Wahlberg).
The terrorists are ruthless and implacable. Some foreign informants and obscure civil servants turn out to be inspiringly tough-minded and smart: low profiles in courage. But “The Path to 9/11” is an unsparing, and at times hyperbolic, portrait of bureaucratic turf wars, buck passing and complacency. Senior managers at the F.B.I. and C.I.A. are overwhelmed and quicker to protect their own hides than national security. It’s always the enemy within that nettles the most.
ABC has been under assault by bloggers and former officials who claim the film paints an unfairly censorious portrait of the Clinton administration, with a lobbying campaign reminiscent of the one that drove CBS to cancel “The Reagans” biopic in 2003. (CBS’s parent company, Viacom, kicked it to the cable channel Showtime.) Some kind of reaction was inevitable this time.
All mini-series Photoshop the facts. “The Path to 9/11” is not a documentary, or even a docu-drama; it is a fictionalized account of what took place. It relies on the report of the Sept. 11 commission, the King James version of all Sept. 11 accounts, as well as other material and memoirs. Some scenes come straight from the writers’ imaginations. Yet any depiction of those times would have to focus on those who were in charge, and by their own accounts mistakes were made.
The first bombing of the World Trade Center happened on Bill Clinton’s watch. So did the 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 attack on the U.S.S. Cole in Yemen. The president’s staff — and the civil servants who worked for them — witnessed the danger of Al Qaeda close up and personally. Some even lost their lives.
In 2001 President Bush and his newly appointed aides had ample warning, including a briefing paper titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.,” and they failed to take it seriously enough, but their missteps are not equal. It’s like focusing blame for a school shooting at the beginning of the school year on the student’s new home room teacher; the adults who watched the boy torment classmates and poison small animals knew better. (It’s safe to assume that any future mini-series about American foreign policy will not delve flatteringly into Mr. Bush’s march to war in Iraq.)
The outside pressure was intense enough to persuade ABC to re-edit one of the more contested made-up scenes in the film. In the version sent to critics, it depicted C.I.A. operatives and their Afghan allies armed with guns and night-vision goggles creeping in the dark to snatch Mr. bin Laden from his compound in 1998. The men are told to stand by, in harm’s way, as the C.I.A. director, George J. Tenet and the national security adviser, Samuel R. Berger, cavil by videoconference. Rather than take a firm decision, Mr. Berger flips off his videophone, and Mr. Tenet aborts the mission. (Among other things, ABC agreed to excise Mr. Berger’s hissy fit.)
In reality the C.I.A. got close, but never that close. In May 1998 Mr. Tenet scrapped a heavily rehearsed raid to kidnap Mr. bin Laden from his compound before it was mounted. “No capture plan before 9/11 ever again attained the same level of detail and preparation,” the Sept. 11 commission report said. “Working-level C.I.A. officers were disappointed.”
The international manhunt for the 1993 World Trade Center bomber, Ramzi Yousef, is thrilling, but those early successes, led by local F.B.I. agents, district attorneys and the New York Police Department, also fed public complacency. It was easy for people to dismiss the terrorist threat as real but manageable.
“We’re not safe yet,” Mr. O’Neill laments after he has been sidelined at the bureau by rivals. “And nobody seems to care.”
Lingering serenity collapses in the second part, which opens once again with ominous fragments of Sept. 11: military pilots ordered to scramble — “Is this real world or exercise?” — and a flight attendant on Flight 11 shakily saying over a plane phone, “We’re flying way too low.”
As the terrorist threat mounts, one of the more jarring moments is a real-life clip of President Bill Clinton addressing the nation about Monica Lewinsky.
The Sept. 11 commission concluded that the sex scandal distracted the Clinton administration from the terrorist threat. But in hindsight, surely the right-wing groups who drove for impeachment must look back at their partisan obsession with shame, like widows sickened by the memory of spats about dirty dishes and gambling debts.
The inserted news clips of Mr. Bush are not exactly inspiring. He is shown sweaty and dismissive in jogging shorts, dodging questions about tax cuts. Condoleezza Rice — who is impersonated by Penny Johnson Jerald, who played the conniving wife of David Palmer in “24” — cannot be too thrilled with her moment on screen either. She humors, but does not heed, the counter-terrorism adviser Richard A. Clarke; actually she demotes him.
Madeleine K. Albright has also objected to her portrayal, and Mr. Clarke, who is the Cassandra of Al Qaeda and one of the film’s heroes, has complained about factual distortions.
But there is no dispute that in 2000, the destroyer Cole was attacked, Washington dithered and Mr. bin Laden’s men kept burrowing deeper and deeper into their plot to attack America on its own soil. The film ends where it began, only the morning of Sept. 11 is finally shown, with slow, elegiac music, in its full horror.
Dramatic license was certainly taken, but blame is spread pretty evenly across the board. It’s not the inaccuracies of “The Path to 9/11” that make ABC’s mini-series so upsetting. It’s the situation on the ground in Afghanistan now.
The television movie about the rise of Al Qaeda comes at a time when the Taliban is flaunting a resurgence in Afghanistan. Sept. 11 drove the United States to clean out that terrorist hole-in-the-wall, once and for all. After all the lessons learned from Sept. 11, the Taliban is back and growing stronger while the American military there seems as bogged down as it is in Iraq, powerless to check the spiraling violence.
Hindsight is heartbreaking and disturbing to watch, even in a made-for-television movie. But it’s even harder to take when those steps continue to contaminate the present.”

An Untrue ‘Path’?
“Clinton administration officials are demanding changes to a forthcoming mini-series tracing the origins of the September 11 attacks. Should the network bend?
WEB-EXCLUSIVE COMMENTARY
By Marc Peyser
Newsweek
Updated: 4:17 p.m. MT Sept 7, 2006
Sept. 7, 2006 – Former president Bill Clinton is blasting the ABC 9/11 docudrama “The Path to 9/11” for being inaccurate and unfair. You’ve got to love the irony of that. Wasn’t he the guy who hired Hollywood filmmakers to create a campaign biopic of his life? Sure, “The Path to 9/11” makes up dialogue, invents scenes and creates a composite character or two, but sometimes you have to craft the facts in a certain way to tell a complicated story. Just like sometimes you have to reconsider what the definition of “is” is when you don’t want people to know you’ve had an affair with a White House intern.
But let’s remove Clinton, and politics, from the situation. Does the president make a fair point? Is “The Path to 9/11” unfit for broadcast because it plays fast and loose with history? After all, “The Path to 9/11” claims to be a balanced and detailed account of the government’s decadelong fight against extremist Islamic terrorists. It actually starts with the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and tries to connect the many and disparate lines that became the blueprint for the attacks in 2001. The movie’s theme is that government officials in two administrations had numerous opportunities to stop the various players—from the 19 hijackers to Osama bin Laden himself—but they bungled the job because they were overly concerned with political appearances and petty interagency feuds.
Clinton’s major beef is over a scene where his security adviser Richard Clarke (played by Stephen Root), stops the CIA from assassinating bin Laden out of concern that the president wants to avoid any political damage should the mission go awry. The movie then cuts to real footage of Clinton testifying that “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.” The obvious implication is that Clinton ducked pulling the trigger because he was too preoccupied with his political future, especially since it was undermined by his own personal drama. (And if that implication isn’t obvious enough, the camera immediately cuts from Clinton to a suggestive shot of the looming phallic Washington monument).
Was Clinton too distracted to act? Maybe. Is it plausible to suggest that? Certainly to some people, including the filmmakers. And frankly, that should be enough. “The Path to 9/11” isn’t a documentary; it’s a docu-drama. Part of the idea of fictionalizing historical events is to tell a story, to get at a deeper truth than a documentary could. After all those Oliver Stone movies—not to mention dozens of “reality” TV shows—viewers know the difference between real history and an entertainment that uses history as its subject. If the Reagans can survive the snarky look at their relationship posited by the mini-series “The Reagans,” certainly Clinton can survive “The Path to 9/11,” too. This isn’t a history lesson. It’s a television show.
That said, ABC shouldn’t be let off the hook entirely for “The Path to 9/11.” The mini-series itself—which, by the way, is hugely engrossing and more than a little scary—should stand on its own. But the network’s own PR for the movie opened the door to Clinton’s complaints. The filmmakers, including producer Marc Platt and director David Cunningham, have been very outspoken about how “The Path to 9/11” is steeped in history. They say it’s based primarily on the government’s own 9/11 Commission report.
Former New Jersey governor Tom Kean, who co-chaired the commission, was a senior consultant on the movie and has personally vouched for the movie’s accuracy in recent months. “This is the story of how it happened,” Kean said at a news conference in July. Added Platt: “Our ambitions and our goals and our standards were all about accuracy.” ABC was so impressed with the “accuracy” of the movie, it has planned to send it to schools as a teaching tool. What’s more, the network will show the movie with no interruptions, which seems like a tacit way of saying this movie is too important, too truthful to be sullied with something as phony as a commercial. Pompous? Oh, yeah.
And now that pomposity has come back to bite them in the behind. If ABC hadn’t acted as if “The Path to 9/11” was the definitive word on the events leading up to 9/11, perhaps the public officials depicted in it, including former national-security adviser Sandy Berger and former secretary of State Madeleine Albright, wouldn’t be complaining about inaccuracies. You can’t sell your movies as “extraordinarily educational,” which is how Platt has described it, then throw on the mantle of fiction when someone whose life was fictionalized complains.
The fact is, networks are always chicken when it comes to political pressure. After all, CBS got so nervous about “The Reagans” that it made sister network Showtime air it. Even though ABC says it’s standing by its movie now, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the most egregiously fictionalized scenes—including one where Berger slams down the phone on a CIA operative—were excised when the mini-series hits the air. Frankly, the Monica Lewinsky references—there are actually just two of them—do come across as gratuitous and semipolitical and could easily be edited out, too. There’s plenty of blame to go around in “The Path to 9/11” without them.”

Mark Steckel, I have only used the spotlight feature a couple times thus far, but it is an incredibly powerful tool. I think if one good thing came out of the debacle of the 2004 “election” it was the phrase “be the media”. And the work that Jane and Christy and their incredible crew do to breathe life back into the corpse of the free press is so important; it has just energized our democracy. And because it is a new model of media, or press, and it includes this community, it has potential that we are just beginning to see. This spotlight feature is a stroke of genius. Thank you so much for putting it into our hands and simplifying the task of raising our voices.
And Jennifer Nix? You rock, woman.
cripes. in the past ten years i have worked as a bit player in dozens of film and television projects. the idea that the producers and director of a $30 million dollar, dramatic feature would allow actors to improvise pivotal scenes is ridiculous. regardless of spin, slant or intent the film making process is not amenable to making stuff up on the spot. if you are robin williams or jim carrey in a comedy star vehicle, the rules change. improvisations just aren’t that commonplace. the script consultant sits beside the director, logging every line of dialogue. improvs cause potential havoc in the continuity department.
this seems like a cowardly way to shift blame from the production to the actors. furthermore, whining that critical comments are just so awful because they’re still editing smacks of panic. a production of this scale cutting for content a couple of days before broadcast sounds like just more codswallop. especially considering that dozens upon dozens of review copies have already shipped to ideologically friendly sites and media. me thinks abc is busy trying to clean the poopie out of their corporate trousers.
keep the pressure on. keep the cards and letters coming. this isn’t over until it is over.
Mark,
I like it a lot and have used it a couple of times. As I e-mailed you, when a post has a prompt to use the spotlight feature, I don’t think we want that part of the text to go to the targeted media. Either our front pagers need to leave off the prompt and put it up high in the comment thread, or we need to be able to edit the post before we send it.
Thanks for all of your hard work on this!

I would suggest eliminating the “Update” button and having the checking of All/Print/TV/Radio perform the action of fetching the list entries. Also, move the “add>>” and “
Jen,
I hope you’re sitting in a comfy seat at the screening by now with your popcorn, something to drink and your reporter’s notepad near by. Probably gratuitous by now to say thanks for whipping up this righteous shit storm and slapping the Mouse upside his cheekbone. Yesterday, I sent my protest letter by way of Act for Change and added in my particular outrage about the Scholastic deal. I didn’t think these slimes would budge, not that quick anyway. Kudos, thumbs up and salutes to you and all Firedoggers everywhere!
ALL:
I am so glad you have mentioned this film. I was one of the writers. We will be doing a free one time stream online on Monday, to give everyone something else to watch. Updates will be provided at: 911pressfortruth.com
Also, we are having openings in DC where the writers, directors, producers, etc., will also be speaking… keep track on the web site. I am trying to organize a blog press viewing or at least have a blog press group at the various events (and then off to camp dem we go).
Anyway, thanks again and I do hope you will watch this film.

Excellent! Here’s the link for your URL (I hope).

Thanks, lazlo. That is way encouraging.
OFG — hey, go for it, call all your sign-laden friends. Just do yourself and us a favor first and be sure there is no requirement for a permit. I’d much rather have you here with us instead of in jail for a day. Just sayin’…I know we forget this kind of detail when we’re riled up, best to play it safe.
Ed*ard Teller — sorry, no Apple update here, but I notice the stock took a downtick after close. I’ll keep you posted.
Larisa — how groovy of you to stop in!! Thank you for your work on 911PressforTruth, and to Paul Thompson (whose 9/11 Timeline is the ultimate, definitive resource on the subject). We’ll definitely get your back on this movie!
Larisa Alexandrovna @ 166
I like your work and am very glad to tell you thanks (personally) for all of your good investigative journalism!
I really appreciate what you do.
*atou @ 164
Good suggestion…
But we tried that while developing the Spotlight. Its has some downsides. Specifically when a two letter state code is entered. When is the update done in this case? This becomes even more of a problem when the extended option search fields are used.

Can’t wait to see this film.
I won’t watch the film. I will never watch ABC again nor will buy or watch anything Disney related. I think this is the point where we all need to say Enough!
Jennifer Nix –
You have written two of the best professional letters I have ever read.
Thank you for all that you have done . . .

Thank you. It is really refreshing to hear since I mostly attacked by wingnut creatures who think that I am either CIA or KGB and plotting to take down the administration.
So this is very much a gift and thank you:)
“Don’t criticize Holocaust-denial docudramas until you have seen them.”
LOL….will I seem unserious and “not committed” if I admit I come here for the humor too ??
I hope not..
oh and to OFG: “Six Days On The Road”: pick your recording artist. Or perhaps Merle’s “White Line Fever”.
Mark Steckel @ 171
See your point. Maybe move the update button nearer to the checkboxes, etc., so it’s clearer that they go together. And the add/remove buttons between lists is more visually familiar.
Great tool, by the way! Thank you so much for making it as slick as it already is!
Here’s a list of ABC advertisers, in case you have a few words… http://birdoblog.birdobot.com/disney_propaganda
Jennifer,
Let me add my PROFOUND thanks. (For this, as well as all the other stuff, e.g., Glenn’s book.)

ABC has definitely branded itself for me as the radical right’s mouthpiece; and Scholastic, a publisher I once respected, will never be the same.
Take Action. Let ABC advertisers know that you vote with your dollars. Start here: http://birdoblog.birdobot.com/disney_propaganda
Sorry if this was posted above
Kurt @ 19
YES!
They are rewriting history as it happens and now they even have help from the American educational system. Can the United Federation of Teachers have something to say about this?
Working on it right now, hopefully I’ll get it up by early morning!!! :)

Reasons I love FDL: The many strong, self reliant, intelligent, concerned women. Jane,Christy, and now Jennifer,Larisa,Siun, and all the other fabulous ladies that I missed. Not to say I don’t appreciate TRex, Pach, and all the other guys. But I just love smart women. From an old hairy legged fart. Rock on. hufNpuf
That “Cyrus Nowrasteh” guy looks pretty damn scary. Like he’s got acromegaly or something. Outer sign of inner depravity, methinks. (Not to diss those with actual acromegaly. It’s just that in this case…)
great work! thanks.
There is a Canuckistani alternative to the Prop-A-Gammon……
- Maybe you could talk to Micky Mouse Moore and have him demand that Toronto not show a movie depicting the assassination of a sitting president while you’re all running around panicking that Clintons duplicity, along with his CYA administration, probably caused the deaths of 2700 civilians, and indirectly 2500 troops in Iraq. Pat yourselves on the backs for trying in your “oh so tolorant way” to stop the truth. It won’t work. Liars always get exposed. Live by the lie, die by the lie. We’ve been ;listening to 6 long years of the most outlandish lying fantasies from your side. You can dish it out, but you can’t take it. Feh.
Jennifer, Justin Rood, TPM Muckraker, has been writing about Scholastic. This morning I e-mailed him suggesting a question for the Secretary of Education as to whether she thinks it’s appropriate for Scholastic to distribute this controversial, fact-challenged film to students.
I suspect Rove had a hand in this and he and hard-core Bush supporter Spellings go back to the days before Bush was governor. Remember the story that Spellings declined Rove’s invitation to go on a date with him? Who would have thunk it? Romeo Rove.
And, thank you for your great work.
Hi Jennifer! :D
It’s great to see you blogging. I really enjoyed (if that’s the correct word) “How would a patriot act?” and am looking forward to Marcy’s book. (I’ve linked to that blog here from my blog and told people to help out.) :)
I have linked to your blog here from my blog about this GOP propaganda film!
There are two things that still bother me about this.
1. Where is the funding for it coming from? I cannot imagine for one minute that the shareholders of a large corporation would be happy about a company spending 10’s of millions on something with no return!
2. This is not just an American problem. This is Global in scope! The ABC is being cute about the “docudrama” within the USA, but is blatantly lying to everyone outside the USA! As I said on my blog, it is being promoted in Australia (for example):
“The Path to 9/11 – For the first time… the story of exactly what happened…” and “… Official true story…”
This does NOT gel at all with what Disney/ABC are reporting within the USA! It basically means that the ABC is making a blatant attempt to sway international opinion in favour of the Bush Administration.
Hopefully, we will get answers soon. Again, thanks for all you have done!
Cheers. :)
I love Lost and all but I am more than willing to leave the channel somewhere else (somewhere else besides Lifetime, A&E, History Channel, ESPN, and any and all other Disney propaganda stations) and forego that show if ABC doesn’t do the right thing.
They either present the Truth in place of truthiness or they lose me as a viewer. Period. Disney too. And I will be taking a look at all of ABC’s advertisers as well to see about a little boycott.
I want the Truth: The outgoing Clinton Admin vainly attempting to warn the incoming Bush Admin that terrorism and Al Qaeda was the biggest national security issue, with the Bushies giving them the finger. AG Asscrack telling his daily briefers to stop presenting on terrorism. Bush “reading” (yeah, right, reading) My Pet Goat to a room full of children while planes were striking targets in NY and DC…and then running scairt to Texas to hide until everything was “safe”.
I want the Truth. Objective, documented, recorded truth rather than partisan fantasy.
By the way, you have apparently altered the engine to your sight in recent history. It no longer works as per open, documented web standards as I can no longer submit comments using Konqueror, a truly open and documented standards-based web browser for Linux (including standards-based java and javascript). As a result I have to load an alternative browser specifically for this site if I wish to comment or whatnot. As a result of THIS I am only rarely participating on this blog any more.
Please look into the way your comment system works and ensure that it is using full and properly documented standards rather than some propriatory or perverted varient of actual standards. Please?

If only she’d stuck with the insight. You can cut the McCarthyism in the air with a knife. Of course McCarthy could only dream about what they’ve accomplished … for a short while.
There’s a word for it. I caption emails to friends on the latest Rovian or Luntzian tactic “Gleichschaltung 101″ and on up the scale depending on the sophistication level. It’s Goebbels’s word for coordination of the political culture through the mass media and party and parallel organs. He worked each case differently. He knew people let their guard down for movies (as in docudramas) more than for newsreels, so he poured more into cinema. Newspapers were widely owned, so he designed a format for press conferences that Tony Snow would die for, then concentrated ownership over time.
The thing of it is, it is in plain view. Nothing this vast could be hidden, even in the twilight. Luntz’s memos leak out; so do Boehnert’s talking points. Other public or leaked moves fall right under the concept. It’s all nauseating but instructive.
The good news: we’ve caught on. Chomsky said there are just two forces in the world: corporations and public opinion. Our friends can’t count past 1. They’re paying for it.
