There are many discussions here that I would love for my ‘not progressive’ aquaintances to read. My problem is in explaining where they should go to read them.

“Go to firedoglake.com” I explain.

Cue blank stares and crickets.

“OK, well go to dailykos.com”.

Uh, no. Not because they don’t want to go to these sites, though they may not want to after they get here.

I wish daily that the more mainstream (read: unreachable fundie rightie(wrongie) folks in my world could read the thoughtful, sensible, and often brilliant commentary that is a daily serving here and at our other favorite sites. But how would they even know where to go, even if they did tiptoe out in the middle of the night to sneak a peek?

My wish is this. As much as I love the name firedoglake, it would be nice to have an additional domain name that would redirect to here. I’m not sure what that name should be, nor do I suggest any sort of changes to the name or ‘look-and-feel’ to this site. But imagine having a name that our curious brethren on the right could easily type in to sneak a peek without the fear of firedoglake appearing in their browser history.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Why? Well, he took a President who was handed 9/11 and the chance to be the heroic leader of the entire free world, with 90 percent approval ratings from Americans and the sympathy/support of most of the world, and turned him into one of the most despised, laughed at, unpoplular, unsuccessful, pulling-his-party down politician to ever inhabit the White House.

Even someone as clueless as George Bush could have done better on his own, but no, he had help. With Rove’s help, together they have managed to make America less safe, less respected, less fair, less just, less honest, less tolerant, less healthy, and more indebted than anytime in our history. Gas prices continue their fall. As I said a while ago, barring new speculative pressures the $65/bbl is a more rational place for oil prices to be at the moment. Also I have often thought it was deeply ironic that Bush rattles his saber with Iran, and oil prices rise, making the Iranians richer at our expense and helping support their troubled and corrupt economy. If he had just STFU, oil prices would have declined helping us and hurting them. Go figure.

This sentence is, first, irrelevant if the point of the statement is that the affiliate just shows what is given to it. It is also disingenuous, of course–the program is not in dispute because it presents controversial points of view, but because it presents outright historical falsehoods. The public discourse can survive without deceitful content, thank you very much; and it can sure as hell do without mendacious disclaimers of responsibility.

On the Joe2006 blog tonight, millionaire-lawyer non-combatant successful-draft-deferrer Joe Lieberman’s campaign director, Dan Gerstein, brought up the topic of wife beating in relation to his discussion of the Senator’s possible campaign contributions.

While addressing the questionable validity of a story about GOP fundraising efforts for Lieberman that was posted by their OWN CAMPAIGN STAFF on their OWN BLOG, Gerstein asked if it was possible to prove the Senator doesn’t beat his wife.

After several messages questioning Gerstein about the wife-beating topic, the Lieberman spokesman said “Joe Lieberman does not beat his wife.”

Dangerstein, Stoopid Shite… and it gets much, much better - the comments from Joe’s blog are to die for!

I don’t know about you, but I would totally want to vote for the candidate who doesn’t beat his wife. The Lieberman campaign has done a brilliant job of reaching out to that very sizable anti-wife-beating bloc of voters.

These people are no innocent bystanders. I urge TPM readers in their viewing area to let their advertisers know they’re being associated with this shameful partisan appropriation of our national tragedy.

I am often at a loss as to how to frame a Bush speech. The best I could come up with for one he gave today is that it is like a Russian matryushka doll of fraud within fraud.

Ostensibly, it was about Guantanamo but it really wasn’t. After calling all the detainees murderers and asserting that “rigorous” procedures had been used to assure that “those held at Guantanamo Bay belong at Guantanamo,” he lamented the fact that countries wouldn’t take back those prisoners whom the US had no intention of prosecuting or that the US had qualms about sending them back to their home countries where they might be mistreated. Somehow our mistreatment of them or the fact that countries like Great Britain, France, and even Saudi Arabia had great interest but also experienced great difficulties in repatriating their nationals seems to have gotten loss among the crocodile tears.

The speech quickly jumped on to the 14 CIA detainees, conflating their importance and evil with the more hapless saps of Guantanamo. Bush boasted at length of the information that had been obtained from them but while giving a laundry list he was remarkably short on specifics and never addressed the issue of the inherent unreliability of intelligence gathered from torture or the instances where false coerced intel had produced had supported bad decisions, like our invasion of Iraq.

But this too was a fraud because the speech was less about these al Qaeda figures and more about some major CYA. According to Bush, he wanted to protect those brave souls in the military and the intelligence agencies who were at risk for charges of war crimes, torture, and kidnapping –because they had obeyed his illegal orders. This, of course, was not his fault. No, that belonged to those who opposed the war on terror, you know, the Supreme Court.

Second, the Supreme Court’s recent decision has impaired our ability to prosecute terrorists through military commissions and has put in question the future of the CIA program. In its ruling on military commissions, the court determined that a provision of the Geneva Conventions known as Common Article 3 applies to our war with al Qaeda. This article includes provisions that prohibit outrageous [sic] upon personal dignity and humiliating and degrading treatment. The problem is that these and other provisions of Common Article 3 are vague and undefined, and each could be interpreted in different ways by an American or foreign judges.

And some believe our military and intelligence personnel involved in capturing and questioning terrorists could now be at risk of prosecution under the War Crimes Act simply for doing their jobs in a thorough and professional way.

But once again this was a fraud because Bush’s purpose was not to protect those at the bottom who had carried out his orders but rather those at the top who had formulated them. I had the feeling that Stephen Hadley must have been pissing in his pants over this.

But even this was a fraud because this situation has festered for 5 years and yet it is only now and with Congress focused on an election a mere 60 days away and with a full plate of major bills, like Defense Appropriations, that Bush decides he wants a law immunizing him, his agents, and cronies, and all within a month. How long did they expect the hearings to be on it? 15 minutes?

Maybe it’s meltdown or desperation or just accumulated fatigue from all the other screwups but even for Bush this seems lame. In the end I am left wondering whom he thinks he has persuaded or convinced or what he has accomplished with all these lies within lies.

I posted this below and think it is important. Though I don’t post much this rewrite of the War Crimes Act is too important not to repost up here. I should already be in the sack as I have too get up in about 5 hours for work. If this is off topic please forgive me.

I was deeply troubled over the fact that you and the Democratic Party refuse to remove Joe Leiberman from his chairmanships and caucus. He has shown that he is not a Democrat, but a self serving, mean spirited individual who places his own importance over both the Constitution, Country and Democratic Party. If you believe that he will side with Democrats if he wins while running under the Connecticut for Leiberman Party than you are not as smart as I thought you were. He is not an Independent or Democratic, but a Republican in sheeps clothing and should be kicked out of the Democratic Party before he destroys our chances to win back the House and possibly the Senate.

I also wish too express my concern about another matter that has come to my attention. That is the Republicans trying to rewrite the War Crimes Act to immunize the President and the rest of the civilian leadership against charges of War Crimes being brought against them. This includes the Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condi Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield and all the rest of them in this Administration who were involved, had knowledge of, participated in, carried out or condoned the War Crimes that were commited during the course of this illegal War in Iraq at various places around the world. Including Abu Garaib, Gitmo and Foreign Countries acting on behalf of this Administration. They have violated the Geneva Conventions Common Article 3 and this has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. There was no indication of vagueness during the Nuremberg Trials and to attempt to claim there is now is a lie. Do not let them off the hook. This may be the only chance our country has to regain the integrity and moral standing we once had in the world, do not let this opportunity slip by.

I understand that an attempt will be made too slip it into a bill in the Dead of Night like the Republicans do with their Pork Barrel bills. The Democratic Party needs too take a strong stand and unite together in stopping this outrageous act from happening. Even if this gets pushed through it will not absolve them of their deeds and War Crimes. They will still be War Criminals. Anyone who votes to pass such a rewrite will in fact be conspirators of attempting to cover up and condone the War Crimes commited in our Countries Name and will become an accomplice of those Acts. They will also be liable I believe, to having charges brought against them for their complicity in those very Acts that they try to absolve our leaders from.

I hope you will show true Leadership and not let any Democrats side with and pass this Republican Re-write of the War Crimes Act no matter what bill they slip it into. Even if its brings a shutdown of the Government this Revision can not be allowed to pass. I would also like too ask you to pass this along to Congressperson Nancy Pelosi who will need to hold all Democrats in the House answerable if they vote to pass this in the Re-write in the House.

Good point about locally-owned stations not having to carry every show ABC runs. I know this isn’t so, because the ABC station in one of the towns I used to live in refused to show “Soap”. The local brass thought it was indecent. They ran horrible stuff from other networks instead. I seem to recall one of the replacement shows being CPO Sharkey or whatever that Don Rickles show was called, and that played on NBC at the time.

So no affiliate station has an obligation to carry this show.

So we can call, “Bullshit!” to any claims that a station is obligated to run this travesty. And we can call it loudly.

I think you don’t have to register at Paypal. Wish we had a clear choice on the first page to use paypal or go ahead with credit card.

Apparently you have to check “don’t have a paypal account” plus put in an amount that you want to donate, both on the front page. Then the next page asks you for credit card info.

That’s a quick read, will try to go back and look into it more before I go overseas.

I just tried using the credit card method and got all the way up to the Pay button at the end.

The key seems to be: on the very first page say you DON’T have paypal [even if you do…].

Then put in the amount of your donation. The following pages should look just like a regular credit card thingie.

I just tried using the credit card method and got all the way up to the Pay button at the end.

The key seems to be: on the very first page say you DON’T have paypal [even if you do…].

Then put in the amount of your donation. The following pages should look just like a regular credit card thingie.

Hope this helps.

This seems like something that ought to get fixed. I would hate to see FDL missing out on any donations because some credit card user could not figure out how to make a payment. The above instructions make no sense for someone who DOES have a paypal account. Not trying to cause anybody any trouble, just trying to help out.

I went looking for the scholastic 9/11 lesson plan - got nothin’! put in the above direct link and got a 404 error… if that is indeed the correct file, they pulled it!

No joy - you get the same page from either button, with a link to PayPal if you push the button after ‘Do you have an account’. It was for sure working okay Aug 13, because I have the PayPal receipt for the donation-via-plastic I did then. The WP upgrade was when? (I can hand a check to a friend who has a PP account, but that won’t be until Sunday!)
