Never use "full-throated" and "Santorum" in the same sentence.
"I think he's been a terrific president, absolutely," Santorum said in the nearly hour-long debate on NBC's "Meet the Press." Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld -- whose resignation is being sought by some Republican candidates -- "has done a fine job," he said, and "there is no question that the Iraq war should have commenced."
"I find this finger to be far more useful to sit on."

You keep hewing to that line, Rick. It's a winner.

Watertiger, that’s an opening line for the ages! Glad twolf1 gave a spew warning on the last thread.
tommy yum!
watertiger @ 4
Somehow “707″ doesn’t quite cover that one. Maybe a “747″ or “A380″?
Although I saw that santorum was on MTP a few times yesterday, I couldn’t bring myself to watch him. He is as maddening as the chimpster. I can’t wait to vote against him.
ThinkProgress highlighted one of the ‘debates’ more memorable moments.
Santorum Tells Casey His Dead Father ‘Would Be Very Upset’ With Him
Watching Santorum and Casey next to each other on MTP, I couldn’t help but think Ricky DID have something up his butt, though maybe not his finger. Casey looked a bit too smug throughout the exchange, but I wouldn’t have been able to hide my glee either at sitting next to Rick as he was making such an enormous fooool of himself. Timmeh had fun, too.
watertiger @ 4
Will someone enlighten me? The 70s detective?
i liked that Casey let pumpkinhead bring up the resisency issue . . . and boy did he.
wait: man / dog sanitorium spends a month in his pa home!
hmpf - even conservative, Fareed Zakaria, thinks Dumsfeld’s beyond the pale… a good column regarding all the hysteria…
I like Fareed - he brings perspective and is often sensible…
Great link OldCoastie at 10:50, thanks.
Hasn’t Rick Sanitarium been voted out of office yet? Cuz if he crawls any further up BushCo’s collective sphincter, he’s gonna be really stinky :)
Santorum and Lieberman are destined for the dust bin. Un-Sanitorum and Fibberman, will not be returning to Washington come January. There will be a Democratic Congressional sweep this autumn. The only leaves turning brown and to come tumbling down this fall, will be Republican leaves. And a Democrat will be conducting business from the Oval Office in 2008. Labor’s day is coming.
Is it just me, or did Casey come off as just a little bit too bland and colorless in an empty suit DLC sort of way? Of course, Little Ricky comes off as batshit crazy so maybe bland is a good thing. OTOH, if Casey were running against an actually sane opponent, he’d have a tough time convincing even me to vote for him.
I feel sorry for Pennsylvania.
Happy Labor Day Firedogs!
I thought I would share something I posted at Daily Kos, in the spririt of solidarity and brotherhood and sisterhood on the blogs.
Labor Day Poem
by upperleftedge [Subscribe] [Edit Diary]
Sat Sep 02, 2006 at 09:57:17 PM PDT
On the occasion of this Labor Day week-end I wish to share a piece from my library. It is from a booklet printed in 1971 by The Shorey Book Store in Seattle, Washington which is a facsimile reproduction of “The Seattle General Strike” (An account of what happened in Seattle, and espeically in the Seattle Labor Movement during the General Strike, February 6 to 11, 1919) Issued by the History Committee of the General Strike Committee. It starts out with a poem of sorts by Anise that was printed in the Seattle Union Record, the Labor Daily.
upperleftedge’s diary :: ::
They Can’t Understand
What scares them most is
That NOTHING HAPPENS!
They are ready for DISTURBANCES.
They have machine guns
And soldiers,
But this SMILING SILENCE
Is uncanny.
The business men
Don’t understand
That sort of weapon.
It comes
From a DIFFERENT WORLD
Than the world THEY live in.
It is really funny
And a bit pathtic
To see how worried
And MAD
The business men are getting.
What meetings they hold,
What WILD RUMORS
They use
To keep themselves
STIRRED UP.
Yet MOST of them
Might be real pleasant
HUMAN BEINGS
Except that life
Has seperated them
Too much from the common folks.
It is the SYSTEM
Of industry
That makes them sullen
And SUSPICIOUS of us,
Not any NATURAL depravity.
It is the system
That trains them to believe
In the words of our
Beloved Ole,
That they can bring in
Enough ARMED FORCES
To operate our industries.
But how many
MACHINE GUNS
Will it take to cook
ONE MEAL?
It is your SMILE
That is UPSETTING
Their reliance
On ARTILLERY, brother!
It is the garbage wagons
That go along the street
Marked “EXEMPT
By STRIKE COMMITTEE”
It is the milk stations
That are getting better daily,
And the three hundred
WAR Veterans of Labor
Handling the crowds
WITHOUT GUNS.
For these things speak
Of a NEW POWER
And a NEW WORLD
That they don’t feel
at HOME in.
I don’t know who Anise was but I agree, They Can’t Understand.
I didn’t find Casey to be particularly compelling, but sitting next to Sanitarium, he did look sane and serious…
OldCoastie @

Casey’s best feature may be that he’s not Santorum. Casey is anti-choice.
OldCoastie @ 12
Yes, I read that this am. Not bad. It’s a good read. But… I do not always agree with Mr. Zakaria.
Look at the fear in Ricky’s eyes.
Tommy Yum,

sad but true.

I never jumped up and yelled hooray for Casey during the whole show, but jayt said it much better than I could have…
Pittsburgh, we have a problem.
Oh that Dick Sphinctorum. He’s a real keeper.
If you haven’t noticed, because the press isn’t reporting it that overtly. This appears to be the weekend that the bottom is falling out of Afghanistan. Two NATO planes have crashed and 22 caolition troops have been killed. Hamid Karzai’s brother has been implicated in the opium trade which is flourishing and is expected to exceed international demands.
Oh and NATO claims to have killed 200 Taliban. You knwo the Taliban that were “defeated” according to Lady McBush 5 years ago.
In Iraq, Sistani is washing his hands of politics and there have been 30 US fatalities in the last week.
Oh yeah and according to the Iraq sock puppets, Al Qaeda has been dealt a “fatal blow” by the capture of the infamous # 2 figure. They didn’t even claim that killing Zarqawi was a “fatal blow”, they must have gotten the Rummy Exaggeration Memo’s to pump up the good news for the holiday weekend.

This is funny; one elected Republican publicly saying to the Florida Republican party chair
Re: “full-throated:” how do you know the reporter didn’t realize exactly what he was doing when he wrote that?
Casey is going to be problematic once in D.C. but for now he is the the game in PA, soooo… we bite the bullet I guess. But others can be in the wings ready to pick up the baton if Casey swills too many cocktail weenies and buys some of the koolaid there. He would be a prime choice for the Bush people to wine and dine to make him another Joey though. He will be voting for a dem leader though.
I am grouchy I guess. GO CASEY. :)

The press corpse, lazy and embedded enough to let Gannon/Guckert slip on out so easily, has gotten to enjoy their little backdoor in-jokes a bit too much, eh…?.
Ed*ard Teller @ 33
I just about gagged on that comment …
Casey isn’t going to win any personality contests - I thought he was less than dynamic, and seemed very blah, and I thought he could have argued his points with more clarity.
On the other hand, Ricky’s drumbeat of “Iran, Iran, Iran” should have made people’s alarm bells go off, for many reasons. One is that it sounds just like the pre-Iraq war message. Two, it seems like the bright, shiny object designed to make us forget about Iraq. Three, it sounded just plain loony. I found myself saying to the TV, “Please don’t sit there with a straight face and tell me that the way we’re going to get successfully out of Iraq is to go full-tilt against Iran.” I kept waiting for Casey to say it, but he didn’t.
Casey beats a sharp stick in the eye, I guess, but it’s a shame that that’s what it comes down to.

Casey always seems either bland or a bit goofy in a spaced out kind of way - but as you noted so well “Little Ricky comes off as batshit crazy..” FOTFL - thanks Morris for restoring my sense of humor this otherwise cold, foggy and unpleasant late morning.
OT-CNN just showed a “scuffle” at the CT parade, with ZERO explanation of what happened. A couple wearing Lamont shirts with a baby were there, and the mother was screaming at somebody “Get away from my child!” and the dad held up a torn Lamont sign.
Anyone?
Casey seems like plain oatmeal. Maybe some butter and salt will help.

Please don’t insult gay men through associating them with Santorum and George Bush.

OT For those who may be wondering what has been going on in Israel since Lebanon.
The country’s President Katsav is being investigated for rape. Justice Minister Ramon resigned after being indicted for indecent assault. Prime Minister Olmert is being investigated over a sweetheart deal that gave him an expensive apartment at substantially less than it was valued in exchange for favors to the contractors. He is also being investigated for exchanging appointments for favors.
With the Lebanon debacle still reverberating through Israeli society, with multiple investigations and much acrimony over them, the Olmert government has taken a sharp turn to the right back to its Likud roots. Kadima Olmert’s Party has abandoned its unilateral plan for establishing borders and “peace” called “convergence” after the Lebanon experience and the Gaza withdrawal showed just how bankrupt such a “unilateral” plan was. So in a play for conservatives, bids are now being let on 690 apartments near Jerusalem in an expansion of Jewish settlements there. Also there is talk of legitimizing “illegal” settlements elsewhere in the West Bank and extending them aid. Israel continues its attacks on the territories, especially Gaza. After initial suggestions of opening negotiations with Syria by Defense Minister Peretz, Prime Minister Olmert in classic saber rattling mode rejected these, called Syria not a reliable bargaining partner, and warned that Israel would use more force against Syria than it had in Lebanon in the event of a conflict. Israel’s punitive blockade of Lebanon continues.
Meanwhile Israeli soldiers and some officials are being warned that travel to Europe might leave them open to arrest for war crimes as a result of Israel’s attacks on Lebanon. And Great Britain, Germany, and Italy are refusing El Al cargo flights carrying munitions from the US to stopover in their countries.
Mix political corruption, mostly bribery and extortion endemic in Israel’s fractured parliamentary system, with venal, morally vacuous leaders, an unsuccessful war, a long and brutal occupation, pervasive Jewish on Arab racism, and unremitting belligerence and paranoia in equal doses and you get the current Israeli political scene. What you should not expect from this combination is good sense, new ideas, or peace.

The War on Iraq has already lasted longer than it took the US to defeat Hitler in Europe …

Oh, cry me a river, Pennsylvania. Boo hoo hoo. Here in Florida we have a choice between Colorless Bill Nelson and Bat-shit Katherine Harris, the She-Santorum.
Perhaps that came off as a little mean. What I meant is, Pennsylvania, I feel your pain. But really…Santorum…what the hell were you thinking?
In Indiana, the Democrats didn’t even put up an opponent at all to the re-election of GOP Senator Dick Lugar.
I believe the logic is that since there are 3 very hot pickup Congressional races, there was no point in getting him involved and bringing out “his voters”. In Indianapolis, theres a hot Prosecutors race so the GOP put up a nobody against the very popular Democratic Congresswoman so that she wont bring out “her voters” and upset that local county race…
Hugh @ 44
Good, clean government. That’s what I like. Reminds me of here.

So, why didn’t they put up a non-sucky senate candidate against Nelson in Florida? Nelson could probably be beatable. Jeb is inexplicably popular, and could probably beat him. Why they are giving Nelson a pass is sort of weird. My theory is that they are scared, and are not trying for pick-ups. They are trying to desperately hold on to what they have.
BBC
The Israeli government says it plans to build 700 new homes in two settlement blocs in the occupied West Bank.
Adverts published in Israeli newspapers invite bids for work in Maale Adumim just outside east Jerusalem and Beitar Illit to the south, near Bethlehem.
It is the biggest expansion of Jewish settlements to be announced since the government came to office in May.
Palestinians see such moves as an obstacle to peace and the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
“why are those Ayrabs so mean to democratic Israel?”
Hugh @ 44

OfT: Thanks Hugh, I just read over in emptywheel’s latest, What Tipped the Balance? that al-Sistani issued a fatwa, awhile ago, condeming the Israeli’s for attacking Qana.
cleter — the GOP tried to find a stronger opponent to Nelson but Ms. Harris was skillful politically and grabbed the prize. It’s crumbling to dust in her hands…
I watched MTP last nite and I was unhappy that Casey didn’t bring up
– the K Street project
– man-on-dog
– the extreme judiciary
There were lots of opportunities for Casey to shine — he didn’t. To say that he’s “not-Santorum” is what’s wrong with the entire DSCC/DLC world. The ONLY thing good about Casey is that he’ll organize with the Democrats. Surely he’ll merit a primary challenge in 2012….
Hugh@44 - great summary.
*ilson - I don’t understand relinquishing the field to Lugar.
TeddySanFran @ 57
But Casey supporters in 2012 will tell you that Casey’s record is being distorted by angry bloggers who cannot tolerate diversity, and who only want to hurt the Democratic Party.

This is just the intermission in the Middle East thing. Time to re-stock guns, bombs and ammunition. Time to re-plan. The second reel in this horror movie is being loaded. And what will our ‘leader’ do? Nothing. We’re all going to be doing the neutron dance soon. Did you know that death from atomic poisoning, I have read, is much like dying from leukemia.
OK kiddo–
sadly, you may be all too right ;(.
Probably already been mentioned, but I had CNN on yesterday, and for some reason, they had Lanny Davis on to talk in his capacity as a former Clinton administration member and Democratic “strategist.” As soon as he said something along the lines of “the party needs to be Bill Clinton plus - and move into the center” I turned it off. Lanny Davis and his philosphy are not where the party needs to go, and I am sick of these DLC-ers getting air-time to blather on like they have the answer to taking back the majority. Excuse me, Lanny, but how has that strategy worked out since 1992?
I realize that the CM are more comfortable with the DLC-ers - they are not as threatening to the CM’s turf as the progressive side of the party - but geez, I hate to see them showcased as though they actually still speak for the majority of Democrats.
happy labor day everyone!
take the day off! tell your boss skippy said you could!

OT:
Tha Anchorage Daily News editorialized this morning for net neutrality. The editorial admonished Ted Stevens, something they’ve
rarelynever done:Net neutrality is hardly a heavy-handed government intrusion into the free-wheeling world of the Internet. It is a simple antitrust rule that protects consumers by keeping Internet companies from exploiting their control over connections. Congress should get ahead of the curve and ensure net neutrality before abuses begin to spread.
BOTTOM LINE: Net neutrality is a good idea. Sen. Ted Stevens should support it.

People who credit Clinton with such a great victory in 1992 always seem to forget that the DLC pulled off that win in a THREE-WAY race for the Presidency. So, really, there’s never been a clear-cut victory for middle-Democrats.

I gotta wonder what the ownership structure of ADN is — do they have an economic interest to protect by endorsing net neutrality, like a subsidiary? Or, is it now (after the CBC raid?) easier to oppose Stevens the Elder?
Not too many comments on the Santorum blog. Yet.
http://santorumblog.com/2006/04/were-ready.html
Anne@67 - I had a similar experience with a “liberal talk radio” pundit that CNN had on to discuss the “will Hil or won’t she” issue. One question asked was whether Hilary’s war position would cause trouble with the “liberal wing” (or some such phrase) of the party and he droned on about how the anti-war liberals have no problem at all with Hilary, none none none.
To slightly paraphrase Olbermann - From what planet do they ship in 24hour news show pundits?

“Four years after the revolution
and the old king’s execution
Four years after I remember how
those courtiers took their final bow
String up every aristocrat
Out with the priests Let them live on their fat
Four years after we started fighting
Marat keeps on with his writing
Four years after the Bastille fell
He still recalls the old battle yell
Down with all of the ruling class
Throw all the generals out on their arse
Good old Marat by your side we’ll stand or fall
You’re the only one that we can trust at all
Four years he fought and he fought unafraid
Sniffing down traitors by traitors betrayed
Marat in the courtroom Marat underground
Sometimes the otter and sometimes the hound
Fight ing all the gentry and fighting every priest
Businessman the bourgeois the military beast
Marat always ready to stifle every scheme
of the sons of the arse licking dying regime
We’ve got new generals our leaders are new
They sit and they argue and all that they do
Is sell their own colleagues and ride upon their backs
And jail them and break them and give them all the axe
Screaming in language that no one understands
Of the rights that we grabbed with our own bleeding hands
When we wiped out the bosses and stormed through the wall
Of the prison they told us would outlast us all
Marat we’re poor And the poor stay poor
Marat don’t make Us wait anymore
We want our rights and we don’t care how
We want our revolution now
Why do they have the gold
Why do they have the power
Why why why Do they have the friends at the top
Why do they have the jobs at the top
We’ve got nothing Always had nothing
Nothing but holes and millions of them
Living in holes dying in holes
Holes in our bellies and holes in our clothes
Marat we’re poor And the poor stay poor
Marat don’t make us wait anymore
We want our rights and we don’t care how
We want our revolution NOW!”
