The ABC television network is using the fifth anniversary of 9/11 as an opportunity to rewrite history. On September 10 and 11, ABC/Disney will broadcast "The Path to 9/11", a 6-hour, two-part "docudrama" written and produced by conservative filmmakers who place a lion's share of the blame for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on alleged failures of the Clinton administration.
This is not the first time that Hollywood has used 9/11 as a pretext to air pro-Bush propaganda in the guise of a docudrama. On the second anniversary of the terrorist attack, the Showtime cable network broadcast "DC 9/11: Time of Crisis," written by conservative Republican Lionel Chetwynd. Dubbed "a reelection campaign movie" by Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales, the film starred actor Timothy Bottoms in the role of George W. Bush, depicting him as a leader of Churchillian stature who takes personal charge in the 9/11 aftermath while brushing off worries about his own safety with declarations such as, "If some tinhorn terrorist wants me, tell him to come on over and get me. I'll be home!" In reality, as opposed to the bizarro world of docudrama, Bush's safety on 9/11 was guaranteed by hustling him off to an undisclosed location, while Cheney went into hiding for months.
What makes "The Path to 9/11" somewhat different is its claim to be based on the report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9/11 Commission). Thomas Kean, the Republican co-chairman of the 9/11 commission, served as an advisor to the film, although Lee Hamilton, the commission's Democratic co-chair, did not. ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson is claiming that its miniseries is a public service that goes beyond mere entertainment. "Some things you do for commerce and some things because they are the right thing to do," he told Variety magazine.
If the goal were simply to inform the public, however, ABC would have produced an actual documentary rather than a docudrama, which gives the producers license to distort facts whenever and however they wish, while also pretending that their work is somehow a re-enactment of reality.
The show's political slant is evident from the fact that Rush Limbaugh is talking up the movie, noting that its screenwriter, Cyrus Nowrasteh, is a personal friend. Several weeks prior to the broadcast, publicists sent out advance DVDs of the film to conservative bloggers, and screenings have been held for conservative pundits like U.S. News & World Report writer Michael Barone. Even relatively obscure right-wing blogs such as Patterico's Pontifications, written by Los Angeles County attorney Justin Levine, have been favored with advance screenings. Levine reciprocated by declaring that the film is "free of political spin, politically correct whitewashing and partisan wrangling" and "one of the best made-for-televison movies seen in decades. ... The Clinton administration will likely go ballistic over this film." In its politically-spin-free way, Patterico pontificates, the film also "lays out viscerally powerful arguments in favor of the Patriot Act and airport profiling."
When challenged to explain why the right-wing blogosphere is abuzz with praise for the film, director David Cunningham responded that "we are also being accused of being a left wing movie that bashes Bush" — a claim for which there is absolutely no evidence. I searched Technorati for mentions of the film and found 260 references, mostly from conservative websites, every single one of which had nothing but praise for the film. And although I found numerous examples of conservative pundits and bloggers who reported seeing pre-broadcast screenings, no leftist pundits or bloggers had been given a chance to see it (unless you count Salon.com's roundup of several 9/11-themed movies).
As further evidence of the filmmakers' fundamental dishonesty, "Path to 9/11" had its own blog until recently, where screenwriter Nowrasteh attempted to explain away the right-wing blogobuzz about the film by saying, "We can't control who writes what." It's clear, however, that they did carefully control who could see the film prior to broadcast. And in response to criticisms and questions posted in the comments section of their own blog, they airbrushed it out of existence Sunday afternoon, which is why my links above to the apologetics by Cunningham and Nowrasteh no longer work, although the Google cache to the original blog still exists.
The Honest Truthiness
So what is it that conservatives love so much about this film? According to Barone, one "gripping scene" shows "CIA agents surrounding bin Laden's encampments and then being called back when National Security Adviser Sandy Berger refuses to give a go-ahead for the operation." Conservative filmmaker Govindini Murty was also impressed by the same scene, writing a glowing review that was published both on her own blog and on Human Events, the "national conservative weekly." She writes:
One astonishing sequence in "The Path to 9/11" shows the CIA and the Northern Alliance surrounding Bin Laden’s house in Afghanistan. They’re on the verge of capturing Bin Laden, but they need final approval from the Clinton administration in order to go ahead. They phone Clinton, but he and his senior staff refuse to give authorization for the capture of Bin Laden, for fear of political fall-out if the mission should go wrong and civilians are harmed. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger in essence tells the team in Afghanistan that if they want to capture Bin Laden, they’ll have to go ahead and do it on their own without any official authorization. ... The episode is a perfect example of Clinton-era irresponsibility and incompetence.
The only problem with this "perfect example", which Murty praises because it "honestly depicts how the Clinton administration repeatedly bungled the capture of Osama Bin Laden," is that it didn't happen. In reality, it was CIA director George Tenet, not Berger, who called off the operation — which never got anywhere near "surrounding Bin Laden's house in Afghanistan." According to the 9/11 commision report on which the movie is supposedly based,
Tenet told us that given the recommendation of his chief operations officers, he alone had decided to "turn off" the operation. He had simply informed Berger, who had not pushed back. Berger's recollection was similar. He said the plan was never presented to the White House for a decision.
The CIA's senior management clearly did not think the plan would work. Tenet's deputy director of operations wrote to Berger a few weeks later that the CIA assessed the tribals' ability to capture Bin Ladin and deliver him to U.S. officials as low.
In an interview with the far-right Front Page Magazine, "Path to 9/11" screenwriter Nowrasteh said that the 9/11 report "details the Clinton's administration's response -- or lack of response -- to Al Qaeda and how this emboldened Bin Laden to keep attacking American interests. The worst example is the response to the October, 2000 attack on the U.S.S. COLE in Yemen where 17 American sailors were killed. There simply was no response. Nothing."
Again, the actual commission report described thing differently:
As evidence of al Qaeda's responsibility for the Cole attack came in during November 2000, National Security Advisor Samuel Berger asked the Pentagon to develop a plan for a sustained air campaign against the Taliban. Clarke developed a paper laying out a formal, specific ultimatum. But Clarke's plan apparently did not advance to formal consideration by the Small Group of principals. We have found no indication that the idea was briefed to the new administration or that Clarke passed his paper to them, although the same team of career officials spanned both administrations.
The commission's executive summary explains that by the time Al Qaeda was definitely identified as the party responsible for attacking the Cole, Clinton had left office, and it was Bush who declined to take action:
After the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole, evidence accumulated that it had been launched by al Qaeda operatives, but without confirmation that Bin Ladin had given the order. The Taliban had earlier been warned that it would be held responsible for another Bin Ladin attack on the United States. The CIA described its findings as a "preliminary judgment"; President Clinton and his chief advisers told us they were waiting for a conclusion before deciding whether to take military action. The military alternatives remained unappealing to them.
The transition to the new Bush administration in late 2000 and early 2001 took place with the Cole issue still pending. President George W. Bush and his chief advisers accepted that al Qaeda was responsible for the attack on the Cole, but did not like the options available for a response.
Bin Ladin's inference may well have been that attacks, at least at the level of the Cole, were risk free.
There is another political wrinkle to this that should be noted. The attack on the Cole occurred in October 2000, near the end of Clinton's presidency and at the peak of the election campaign between George W. Bush and Al Gore. A military strike under those circumstances, in the absence of clear evidence linking Al Qaeda to the Cole attack, would have been instantly denounced by Republicans as an election-season publicity stunt designed to benefit Gore. And it was the FBI and CIA that failed to provide the clear rationale that Clinton would have needed to justify such action. In Richard Clarke's book, Against All Enemies, he describes the handling of the Cole attack as follows:
The Yemeni government also dragged its feet in the investigation, leading to President Clinton's becoming personally involved. The U.S. government left the Yemenis in no doubt about the two alternative paths that Yemeni-American relations could take.
Meanwhile in Washington neither CIA nor FBI would state the obvious: al Qaeda did it. ... It was difficult to gain support for a retaliatory strike when neither FBI nor CIA would say that al Qaeda did it. ...
Clinton left office with bin Laden alive, but having authorized action to eliminate him and to step up the attacks on al Qaeda. He had defeated al Qaeda when it attempted to take over Bosnia by having its fighters dominate the defense of the breakaway state from Serbian attacks. He had seen earlier than anyone that terrorism would be the major new threat facing America, and therefore had greatly increased funding for counterterrorism and initiated homeland protection programs. He had put an end to Iraqi and Iranian terrorism against the United States by quickly acting against the intelligence services of each nation.
Because of the intensity of the political opposition that Clinton encountered, he had been heavily criticized for bombing al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, for engaging in "Wag the Dog" tactics to divert attention from a scandal about his personal life. For similar reasons, he could not fire the recalcitrant FBI director who had failed to fix the Bureau or to uncover terrorists in the United States. ...
When Clinton left office many people, including the incoming Bush administration, thought that he and his administration were overly obsessed with al Qaeda. ... Why was Clinton so worked up about al Qaeda and why did he talk to President-elect Bush about it and have Sandy Berger raise it with his successor as National Security Advisor, Condi Rice? In January 2001, the new administration really thought Clinton's recommendation that eliminating al Qaeda be one of their highest priorities, well, rather odd, like so many of the Clinton administration's actions, from their perspective.
William Rivers Pitt has written a detailed account of the initiatives initiated under Clinton to deal with Al Qaeda and the threat of terrorism. PBS has produced a documentary (not a docudrama) that offers fascinating insights into the life and career of John O'Neill, the counterterrorism expert who presciently warned about Al Qaeda prior to 9/11 and who is portrayed in "The Path to 9/11" by actor Harvey Keitel. The New Yorker has also written a nuanced, detailed profile of O'Neill that avoids political spin.
If people want to understand the failures that led to 9/11, they should turn to these and other examples of actual journalism rather than the mix of fact, fantasy and deliberate distortion that ABC/Disney plans to broadcast on the fifth anniversary of America's deadliest terrorist attack.
Sheldon Rampton is the co-author, with John Stauber, of several books including Weapons of Mass Deception and The Best War Ever: Lies, Damned Lies and the Mess in Iraq, which will be published by Tarcher/Penguin in September.

Now, if this is put on by ABC as a true representation of fact, it should indeed warrant complaints to the FCC.
Remember back in 2003 when the incessant whining from the right-wing Reagan worshippers got CBS to pull its Reagan movie becase it basically didn’t fellate St. Ron enough?
We need to do the same and more. Now.
This sounds like the most blatant and evil piece of pure political propaganda since Die Ewige Jude. Its outright falsehood won’t matter once its BS is embedded in the minds of the ignorant public who won’t bother to actually look for what the 9/11 report actually says.
Stop worrying. Nobody’s going to watch this turkey. The only people left in America who still view 9/11 through a rosy gaze of sentimentality are all in the 30% or so who still think Bush is a Christian. We’re not going to reach them anyway, and nobody else will watch the damned thing.
This is because there are three big football games on when ABC is running the faux-cumentary. The overwhelming majority of people who will watch TV next Sun and Mon nights will be watching football rather than this piece of crap.
Six hours? Americans can’t sit still for six minutes. Besides, it’s written by wingers, so you know it will be awful, turgid and trite. Anyone who does start watching and who still might be persuaded that Bush is not a bloody idiot will fall asleep or change the channel long before it blames Clinton or shows Bush as tough.
I just read an article that said that stations are pulling the piece because of profanity, from the firemen at the scene at the World Trade Center, and the stations are afraid of Janice Jackson style fines. That would be the coolest way to stop it. No way to blame it on the Left. Just another case of the conservatives self-destructing.
This morning, cnn.com’s poll Q is;
“How has the US changed since 9/11?” Better or Worse.
Results so far aren’t even close.
Sheldon, thanks so much for a great post.
Any ideas on where the pressure points might be to try and get ABC to “pull” this?
Or do you think trying to get it “pulled,” might actually increase viewership?
Aside from the content, have you heard anything about the technical quality? DW Griffiths BIRTH OF A NATION did terrific damage, because outside of its white supremacist content, his technical expertise made it a must see movie of its time.
http://www.nydailynews.com/fro.....8181c.html
myshkin — you’re an idiot! It’s the replays of a CBS 9/11 pgm that have the profanity problem. We’re talking about the ABC new winger-show …
Thank you for this post! It will be good ammo for complaints to advertisers. Any chance we could get the list before the broadcast? How else can we make ABC pay for this?
Bill Clinton can lead the effort to respond to the charge against his administration. The rest of us should find a way to make sure that two facts are brought back to the public discussion: despite the PDB of Aug 6 and numerous other red flags, 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch, and then later, when bin Laden was surrounded in Tora Bora, Bush outsourced the ground effort and bin Laden escaped. And, of course, bin Laden remains at large to this day.
I am so tired of being told to be afraid, and that I brought it upon myself by voting for intelligent leaders. Truth is, there are more reasons to be afraid now than there were last year and the year before, and if we attack Iran, all bets are off.

I certainly hope you’re right. On Sunday night it’s up against “the brothers,” Eli and Peyton, Giants vs the Colts, on NBC with John Madden and Al Michaels.
incredible how little shame the media has promoting propaganda to keep their party in office
the docudrama is going to say Clinton was responsible for the separation of information between agencies
a ridiculous claim, already exposed
it will also actually blame Clinton for missing “three oportunities” to get bin laden
too bad there is an official testimony, by Tennet, who the president commended for his testimony at the commission’s hearing
Tennnet, under oath disproves the notion, and THAT is under oath
further, there is no “separation of information” excuse for this president
CLINTON had weekly briefings from an anti terror league known as the “principles meetings” which kept him informed of all developments, this president attended not one of those even thought he was informed in no uncertain terms bin laden would be his biggest problem
further, this president was hand delivered specific intel, documented, giving him precise information so urgent, Tennet would testify the president was informed “everyone’s hair was on fire”
the president stood down with that information, even though there was a template for successful procedure;
on page 128 of the report, you will find president Clinton was given an almost identical presidential daily briefing as the one bush received
president Clinton went into action, put this country and all her resources on high alert and the event was prevented, all recorded, under oath, on page 128
further
we can trace bin laden through 5 presidencies
the first president we associate is Reagan, who actually put bin laden in power, thinking terrorism was the method to address the USSR.
the next president would be bush senior, who we know allowed bin laden’s power to develop towards America
then there would be Clinton, he was the ONLY president to address the threat, the ONLY president that took action against bin laden, he actually invented the industry
then we have this president,m who we know did less then the previous president, though informed of the threat, and stood down when given intel that was SO precise, it would tell him when the even would occur, (within months), where it would happen, (new york and Washington), what the targets would be, (financial and political structures), what the weapons would be, (commercial airliners) and the method (high jack)
it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to have that kind of precise intel, this president had that precise intel and stood down
this is what we need to prepare the democrats with when this fantasy is broadcast
we need to EMBARRASS the republican party for THINKING they can rewrite history
ABC’s plugging this bigtime. The advertisers need to be identified and targeted, and Tom Kean needs to be hounded on each bogus point of fact he supposedly blessed until he either implodes or rescinds his affiliation with the project.
*ilson, have a cup of coffee. That looked to me like an honest mistake.
I’d like to see this made into a movie.
‘How Osama bin Laden got away‘ - Christian Science Monitor 3/4/02
Bush killed the host (Taliban) but the parasite (Bin Laden) still lives. Five years later we have more parasites and more hosts for terrorism than ever. Heckuva job, Bushie.
I hope the ratings tank on this, hard.I agree,in a lot of American households football is going to rule both evening’s TV choices. This may be the first time in my life I actually welcome football season, lol.
It’s so shameful, the lengths the right wing will go to,nothing is too low or wrong if it smears good people and makes losers into heroes.
Lobster @ 15
I was joking on the screenname ‘Prince Myshkin” who is the principal character of Dostoyevsky’s story “The Idiot”. Yes, myshkin erred here …
I doubt that this movie will have much effect on the popularity of Bush or of his policies; as someone already said, most people have made up their minds and moved on.
However, if it’s the blatant, black-and-white propaganda it sounds like, some fence sitters might actually concede that the media ain’t so liberal after all.
The other thing to watch is the actors playing Bill and Hillary. Do they throw in little tics that subliminally add up to “do not vote for this woman?”
—
5 minutes later –
One more thing. To the extent that the movie is a success, what will it do to the strategies of all the GOP candidates who have committed to running away from Bush this season? I once knew a guy who liked to toast festive occasions with, “Confusion to the enemy.” And how.
*ilson — my bad, and I even enjoyed that book. Somehow I had Myshkin in War and Peace.
And who will be buying ad time for this?
Reading this post following the recent Book Salon, I sense that this program will resonate with the 25%. Still, the push to pull it resonates with me.
One has to laugh at the never-ending attempt by the right to rewrite history for any and all things Bush.
I wish Sandy Berger would sue the people responsible for this film for slander.
Great job Sheldon.
But guess what….It’s even worse than you have so thoroughly listed here. Like all things Republican, It’s all about the Corporations. Scholastic Corporations stock has been in a decided rise this month. You may be asking what that has to do with this phony piece of Propaganda that is going to be competeing with football?
This is why:

That’s right folks. Remember all those Communist/Marxist/Liberal teachers that have been corrupting our children’s minds. Well this piece of Shyte Movie of the Week has free “Scholastic Aids” to work hand in hand with a classroom showing of this movie, complete with Debating points for your class like:

attacks on 9/11 could have been prevented? Back up
your argument with examples from the miniseries or
The 9/11 Commission Report.
2. Does the media help or hinder our national security?

Nice huh?………..

First, I must agree that anything you put up against the first Sunday & Monday Night Footballs is clearly a sacrificial lamb. The producers probably thought it was a good idea when it was pitched, then decided they had a dog once they saw it.
Just a reminder for folks (esp ralphbon 14) to keep an eye on Aravosis at Americablog. He’s clearly plotting something for ABC.
This movie is a fraud, an attempt to airbrush history, and the stalling on sharing the prerelease video with people who are not wingnuts shows Disney/ABC is trying to cover up its own 9/11 GOP coverup.
Disney wants its patent rights and needs to know we can really, really bring pain to that agenda.
They know exactly
who they a fluffingwhat they are doing. The GOP wants us to forget that 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch and make the country blame Democrats for the coming decades. Not gonna happen. We need to be the country’s truth squads. They own 9/11, lock stock and rubble. It’s their failure, and all the failure they led us into that followed is their grand strategy. We’ve had enough.Love the picture, by the way. Could have been a Shakespeare for all he knew!

OH SHIT, time to call up the school board again.
Good morning. I. See. The. Sun. Yeaaaaa. Two days of steady rain, not drizzle, but steady down pour has brought my gills into play.
About the movie, I am always looking for alternatives to football but this movie won’t be by choice. Turner Classic Movies is having a special day of ’short films’ and I hope to catch that.
Will they cover the fact that Bush never really wanted bin laden?
WASHINGTON — President Bush sternly rejected a Taliban offer to discuss handing over Osama bin Laden to a third country as U.S. jets began a second week of bombing. “They must have not heard. There’s no negotiations,” the president said Sunday.
Irishamerican via OS - YIKES. They are going to try to show this fool film in schools? Going to call my daughter and tell her to call her school ASAP. This movies needs to be outed for his lies soon. And this rundown here in the post is a good start.
Can’t stop laughing. Has anyone noticed that the book in the photo is upside-down?
rkrider @ 32
…or what about “Bin Laden determined to attack inside the United States”
I believe the target schools for this propaganda are winger-schools such as “Christian Academies”, some charter schools and many home-schoolers. I doubt if real teachers will mess with this stuff …
Methinks the only way to stop this piece of Republican shite from airing is by using legal means. Don’t know what they would be, but if it could be delayed in airing past 9/11 I think Disney would drop it altogether.
Irishamerican @ 24 - good find. that is disgusting! I sent Jack Cafferty your link and the link to Sheldon Rampton’s amazing FDL article. Cafferty was the first person that came to my caffeine deprived mind, i can see him ranting about it. Now to dive into Spotlight.

If anyone has contacts with Frank Rich at the NYT, please get this to him.

What is really disgusting is how all of the ReThuglian talking points are disguised as “Debate”….The whole strawman/false choice crap like:
1.The 9/11 Commission Report affords us hindsight.
Knowing what we know now, do you think the
attacks on 9/11 could have been prevented? Back up
your argument with examples from the miniseries or
The 9/11 Commission Report…….yep, that’s right the 911 comission and THIS MOVIE are the only two choices for the “Facts”.
or, my personal favorite…..
2. Does the media help or hinder our national security?…………
Yep, there it is again. That old enemy of democracy, the press. Not to mention the fact that we need to make “responsible choices” between “Security” and “Civil Rights” (read civil rights to mean Communism as practiced by the evil ACLU).
I’ll tell you what folks. If you really think these people are just going to accept defeat in November and go away, then you also believe that the Unions are going to get there power back for the people without the same violent uprisings that it took to create the Unions in this country in the first place in the 30’s.
ConquerIgnorance @ 34
It is funny, but its bullshit.
OT- Can anyone tell me what Saturday thread Ambassador Wilson drops by, please?
Thanks,

According to the right-wing reviewers who have seen “The Path to 9/11,” its production values are high-quality. ABC spent $40 million on it.
As for getting ABC to pull it, I doubt that will happen given the amount of money they’ve spent already on pre-broadcast advertising. The best thing people can do right now is get the word out about the deliberate right-wing distortions of fact, which is why I spent some effort to actually compare the film’s claims with the 9-11 commission report — something that I see me to me has also done. It’s certainly worth complaining to the network and holding their feet to the fire.
Another thing people could do would be to create their own “lesson plans” like the Scholastic aids that Irishamerican linked to. ABC says they want people to use the film as a “teaching opportunity.” OK, let’s teach!

I agree with almost everything in your post, save one.
There was an information wall. And I almost understand why there was. Within the Clinton Administration there were career people like Richard Clark, and people living in the targets, like Mary Jo White who were puashing, really pushing hard to do lots of things to contain Al Quaeda and eleiminate Bin Ladan.
Some folks at main Justice took the position that there should be some pushback, some sort of modulating brake so that the Gov’t wouldn’t run amouk in an excess of fear and good intentions.
The idea was, that really seriuos problems and really good ideas for fighting terrorism would be so everwhelming that they would naturally overcome the imposed inertia/friction of the pushback measures. Measures that included the famous Jamie Gorelick “wall” memo.
I understand why people who loved the Constitution would want to stop a rush to do something/anything right away and want to slow the process down to allow people to think through all the consequences and implications for civil rights and the constitution.
However, the pushback crowd did not place enough trust in the experience, judgement, goodwill and love of country of the Kelleys, Fitzgerald’s, Clark’s and White’s of this world.
Even the “bomb boys” moniker hung on them, kind implied that the main Justice thought that this group of lawyers and investigators had a little bit of “chicken little-the sky is falling” syndrome.
I understand why it happened. I beleive main Justice was well intentioned. However, there was most definatley a wall. It was not required by statute or case law. And it causes really big stumbling blocks in investigations.

I am not worried that this show will reverse Bush’s sagging popularity. However, I refuse to allow the Repubs to control this story and continue using the Clinton administration to shunt attention from their own massive failures. It’s time that the Dems pushed back hard. They have abolutely nothing to apologize for.
The idea that it was Clinton’s failures that led to 9/11 is already accepted folklore with the wingers. I want to stop tha notion from spreading.
For example, I was browsing the comments posted on the “Path to 9/11 blog” (which is has now been deleted) and ran into the following statement from a commenter named Robert
This seems to be a popular line of argument from the right, which we should counter with our own mental exercise. Something that goes a little like this…
The failure of the Bush administration is no different, and we need to pound that idea into the mind of the public. One thing you can say about the wingers is that they defend their brand with passion and energy. We need to do the same.

Schoolastic Books, eh?
Damn. That means we have to boycott Harry Potter!
Damn, Damn, Damn.
I wonder of JK Rowling knows that her publisher, the one she singlehandedly save from extinction has just screwed her over?
Good morning…was so glad to see the “Scholastic” news that Irishamerican brought out yesterday surface in this discussion. This film is pathetic and needs to be stopped, for all the reasons you people eloquently as always, point out; but for me ~ reading that Scholastic is pimping this to teachers…to pimp to kids…is simply disgusting and made me incredibly angry. Who owns Scholastic; as many here rightly bring up time and time again - follow the money trail. And don’t underestimate for a minute how important - and obnoxious - it is that Scholastic is jumping on the bandwagon for this propoganda. From years of doing the PTA Prez, volunteer bit with both of my sons, I can tell you that they are a HUGE influence on the public school system in this country.
if the Clinton Administration was so allegedly deficient in combatting terrorism, what bold decisive new steps did the Bush Administration take before 9/11 ? As we sadly know by now, Bush/Cheney was dismantling much of the counter-terrorism measures already in place …

I wish I knew how to alter the PDF “Lesson Plans” that Pravda was so nice to create for our 9 year olds so that I could go through them line by line and either refute the lies and disinformation, or to completely rewrite the “Lesson Plan” myself and send their version, side by side, with the correct version back to them, and to the DNC, Keith, Wolfie, Katie Couric, Lou Dobbs, etc…..
I do think that we need to start writing the Talking Points in general for our Democratic Pundits and “Leaders” because I see them leaving major points on the tables of “News Shows” on a daily basis.

Not only is it a blatant piece of Propaganda, but this is being put out there not so much to CHANGE minds, but to establish with their base the argument that “The Democrat Party is just impeaching the President to get back at us for Clinton” meme…..
By using the Scholastic endorsement, it establishses a pecident of credibility. I wouldn’t put it past them to have done the Scholastic documents for the ONLY reason of establishing a “Bible” like credibility. Then when it ISN’T used in class rooms, it can be said that it is because of the Librul Activist Hippy public schools.

IrishAmerican, Sheldon, thanks very much for the responses.
I sent an email to Scholastic Books at:

Here’s the text of the email:
Dear sir or madam,
I read this morning that your company is producing a teaching aid for use with the new ABC movie on the 9/11 attacks. It certainly is important that school children, and others, understand the basis for and outcomes of those horrible events.
Since it’s now been shown that the movie has some basic factual errors, will your teaching aids include a list of corrections so that teachers can share accurate information with their classes?
Sincerely,

I am having a problem with spotlight. I picked my 10 targets. Wrote a nice long comment, even coughed up my rea name and contact info (rare, incredibly rare for me) and hit prview.
I keep getting an error box that saye “you have to enter a comment, really”
But I have a comment!
Anyway, it won’t let me send. What do i do? Is this something a moderator can send out for me?
John Casper @ 63
Sheldon.
Do you think the Scholastic Aspect of the story is worthy of an update to the main body of the story so that that information is included in the Spotlight Forwarding of the story? I feel it is another aspect of the story that would stir interest in some people that might otherwise disregard it. What do you think?
John Casper,
I included the Schoolastic Books info in my commnent. Now if I could just get it to “send”
Arrgh. I hate technology, but not as much as it hates me!
lhp: I’ve never encountered that, it its not something we moderators have access to. That’s weird. I would cut-paste-save my comment if I were you by going back with the back button, and try again. There’s also a contact link in there somewhere for the designer. I’m sure he’ll want to hear about your experience.
Lord, yes. My first round of Spotlighting went mainly to some of the panel regulars—second round probably will also.
lhp: Maybe the comment box has a chracter limit and you exceeded it? That could be an error source and you may be getting a generic comment error message.
Pach,
I figured out what I was doing wrong.
There is a line already in the comment box that says “add your comment here”
I hadn’t deleted that. When I just delected that placeholder line, I was able to send.
FYI to the rest of you. Learn from my mistakes.
related note: has this been covered in week end threads ?
http://rawstory.com/showarticl.....M8V80.html
When using Spotlight, I would also venture to say that targeting out of the way, local or regional media sources may have a disproportionate impact. They don’t get much of this kind of feedback, and it’s easier to get editors to place stories locally. Just a thought. Don’t neglect the second or third teir, expecially in your home media markets.
lhp: I think that’s a good observation. I’m sure the designer would be interested in learning about that, so he may put in some explicit text about the need to delete that line.
Another question about Spotlight. Does it take the readers I just sent to back to here?
At the end of my comment I had a sentence suggesting they take the time to read this comment thread as well. Do they get a link?
I’m curious to know what the product they receive is like?
I agree this is outrageous. As we formulate an effective response, let’s keep in mind that the most important thing is to win elections in November so let’s not get overly distracted.
My first response to outrage is to go over to actblue and contribute to campaigns. Then I come back and think about the issue at hand. I recommend this.
Sorry, is there a scene in this movie of Bush reading the August PDB which warned specifically that Bin Laden was about to attack?
Oh wait, that never happened. He was given the warning, but there’s no evidence that he actually read it. He certainly never did a goddamned thing about it.
lhp: they get an email with your introductory comment and the full text of the main post with a link to the main post that included the comment thread. I would guess, however, that few people will actually follow the link back, unless perhaps you make explicit mention in your introductory note of the value and/or importance of the discussion. Depending on whom you target, they get a lot of email.
By the way, if you give Spotlight your email address, you will be sent a copy of your own message. At least, I usually have, though my confirmation email has not gotten back to me yet, maybe because I used my firedoglake address. The rerouting on that one sometimes involves delays.
Thanks, Messrs Casper and *ilson.
Re the Scholastic bit brought up here, and continuing with Horsewoman’s comment that Scholastic has a huge influence in schools, I agree wholeheartedly that it is this organization PLUS getting the news out that there are lies in the movie.
I first heard about a tilt to the right in my kids schools. The school board was being loaded up with right wing religous folks and every meeting had at least some discussion of prayers in schools, public prayers led by principles and teachers in class, and bringing the ‘correct’ books, including the bible, into the classroom. Back when my kids were small, ooooooh so many years ago, no one really listened.
Well shame on us for believing nobody would go along with their schemes. And it is at the school board level where parents and people like you and me can make a huge difference. I tried running once, from my wheelchair no less, but I was just a name with little money and no mobility. He had pretty shiny flyers touting his ‘family’ and wanting schools to do better.
O.K. I’ll be quiet now but this wave of idiocy has been a long time acoming.
I have to head out now, folks. enjoy Labor Day and don’t shoot anyone in the face.
I recommend a book called “Christian Faith and the Truth about 9/11″ by David Ray Griffin.

The Scholastic aspect opens up a whole new world into the underlying motivations for this whole thing…….What was it that Deep throat said?…Oh yeah, “Follow the money”. Who benefits from this in terms of stock options? It has been reported lately (Rueters) That Scholastic was Rumored to be ready for a hostile takeover! I tried to do some investigating into SEC Filings and conections to anyone at Scholastic and the RNC, but I am just a Damn H.S. Dropout, and that stock stuff might as well be sanscrit to me. I just have a gut feeling that there is a lot of money involved here though. For Chris’sakes, this “production” cost $40 mil! How much did it cost Scholastic? What if any Campaign Contributions have been made between these Corporations relating to this project?
looseheadprop @ 44
of course there was an information wall between agencies, really, that’s the way it has to be if they are to expect integrity of investigation.
however, you missed the point, there was an anti terror league that gathered and centralized the information, the wall didn’t exist.
it’s funny, the 8/11 commission said there needed to be a unifying figure who coordinated the inf oration gathering organizations
that unifying figure used to have the title “president”
Clinton fulfilled that aspect of his office, he also enlisted the aid of Clarke, and incredible individual
this president though vacations were more important the performing his job duties and fulfilling his obligation as president
why the hell did he even run?…he never wanted to be president, he wants to jake
there was no information wall between agencies and the anti terror league, the principles.
don’t forget, intel was precise, the president had the intel and did nothing with it.
the “information wall” may exist for other practical scenarios, but it did NOT exist when talking about bin laden, al qaeada, or the fight against terrorism
here’s something that is missed by the media, it’s even missed by those of you hear at firedog lake, it’s definitely missed by the Democrats in office;
PRESIDENT CLINTON WAS GIVEN AN ALMOST IDENTICAL BRIEFING AS THE FAMOUS BRIEFING THIS PRESIDENT WAS GIVEN.
it looks like the same document rewritten it’s so similar
PRESIDENT BROUGHT ALL NECESSARY FORCE TO BEAR TO PREVENT THE EVENT
page 128, have a read, then TALK about, it is the perspective this presidents inept performance has to be weighed
he had a template for defending this country, no competent president would do less, most would do more
this MUST be part of the dialog

I agree with every other part of your comments. And the difference between how Clinton handles the millenium bomb plot warning and the Day of Terror plot warning —– preventing both events by quick, decisive and effective action— and how Shrub completely ignored direst information given to him for the purpose of protecting our country and that he recklessly and carelessly disregarded that information
IS A CRUCIAL THEME

The media is largely a lost cause. Look at CNN Headline News with that knave Glenn Blech. He has been on a war crusade against Iran for weeks now complete with spin and with provactive guests straight from the neo-con roster to push the nation into another ruinous war.
The shit is beginning to come down and the US and the UK are going to be in the shit end of that pile. Look at this weekend—almost 50 US and UK troops killed in Afhganistan and Iraq..with Iraq slipping towards more disaster as we read. Despite the fact that # 2 has been captured again….
Check out what just happened in Jordan
and get used to it.
NATO was just trumpeting the deaths of 200 Taliban in Afghanistan. Hooray, Now NATO is doing death counts.
Of course how many of the 200 were Taliban and how many were 7 year old “pre-Taliban” terrorists..as we are lead to believe by the prevailing Republican/Neo-con/Nazi logic.
The media see every new tragedy in Nielson Ratings. They’ll love a war with Iran.

Whether or not they’d ultimately lose on free speech issues, it would seem imperative that the real-life principals of this movie band together and file a massive lawsuit, for defamation.
The publicity value of such a lawsuit alone would be the pushback required to at least get it out there that the “facts” of this atrocity are even in question (and hey, they might even win).
I feel this film is a milestone in the tranformation of the mainstream media, from friendly handmaiden of Officialdom, to full-blown propaganda arm of the police state. It’s not just “spin”… it’s an all-out LIE. And actual human beings with names and faces will be wronged by it.
I’ve seen comments here that “no one will be watching”; “no one is taking this stuff seriously anymore”, etc. Do you have any concept of how much 60 seconds of primetime network commercial time costs? Do you know why?
Network time rates are computed on “impressions”. All you have to do is put it out there, and it’s worth something. Another apt analogy might be those dozens of SPAMs you receive every day… who, you may ask yourself, would ever be so moronic as to send his or her bank information to a stranger, over the internet?
Thing is… with a billion e-mails, mass-produced for absolutely nothing, you’re playing the odds. All you need are two or three morons, out of a billion, and what do you care if one billion people (minus two) were inconvenienced and offended?
And who will be the target audience for this agitprop? A minority of available viewers, the leftovers from football? Okay. That’s HOW many millions of impressions?
And who would these non-football viewers be? I’m thinking women (no offense to you lady Giants and Colts fans!), as in, “security moms”. Karl does not want to top the Neilsens. Karl wants a specific audience. And, as it turns out, that is precisely whom he will be getting.
So yes, bet your sweet ass this program is going to do some intense brain damage among the fearfuls.
Yes, I know all too well that if the maligned real-life principals push back, they will be slimed as “bad sports” (I’m sure the pushback to the pushback is already in a little subdirectory in Karl’s laptop!). And I also realize that they will probably feel that to fight the right on this would be “bad for the country”… and they’ll probably choose, in proud Dukakis Democratic fashion, to take the “high road”, take the punches, and do nothing.
Bill Clinton, Sandy Berger, et.al. need to SUE.
Schoolastic Books was almost out of business. Children had all but forsaken reading, especailly children’s fiction, when they signed the then unkown JK Rowling for a book about a boy wizard named HArry Potter.
The direct revenue from the HP series not only breathed new life into Schoolastic, but it also created a revival in children’s fiction, especailly fantasy fiction and historialc fiction that has bouyed Schoolastic and other publishers of children’s books.
And turned littleprop into a reader, something that I thought might never happen. THAT is the real magic in Harry Potter, it gets kids to love books.
I am SOOO PO’s about the Schoolastic connection, and their perfidity.

y’all understand Scholastic may be ‘innocent’ in all this, right ? -
a major network, owned by Disney spends $40m on a film about a major event and is willing to provide ‘teaching aids’ to go along with it - and look, how nice, the network/filmaker has sent a
heavily editedsynopsized version of the work for your review. . .they may in fact be complicit, or they may be simply not fully informed - taking a peek at these ‘complimentary materials’ should be an indication
There are only two types of presure which organizations like ABC understand.
1. Commercial pressure - efforts to boycott them or their advertisers, which costs them money (all they actualy care about) and
2. PR pressure, which makes them look bad, humiliates them, forces them to defend themselves and thus leads to 1, which, costing them money or viewership (which means money) is really all they care about.
It seems kind of late to start number one, but I think we need to apply no. two with, as JFK might have said, vigor. Now.
Screaming very loud and publicly can’t do any harm, and if we always include the fact that it’s a boring, badly done and lousily acted POS, true or not, it might not have the effect of increasing viewership, either. The idea is to let people know that ABC has a bias, and it ain’t liberal.
looseheadprop @ 99
Then it appears to me, that we should be asking JK Rowling if Harry Potter is a NeoCon Republican…….
And we should be asking Steve Jobs if this is the “New” Disney, and let him know that we were thinking about getting the new I-pod that toasts your bagels and starts your car, but instead we are going to wait and get the Microsoft version.
lhp, if you have the time or the interest, I’m interested in your take on the possibility that any kind of slander/defamation suits that could be filed?
I can’t imagine that ABC would spend $40 million and leave that to chance, but hope springs eternal.
Why not take note of the commercials that air on our ABC local evening news, and ask the advertisers why they’re placing ads with an ABC affiliate that airs mendacious propaganda? The affiliates are the network’s achilles heel, and the evening news is the big local source of ad revenue. It worked for Josh Marshall during the GOP propaganda blitz of ‘04.

I would think that at the least, being “fully informed” is the basis of the existance for a company that publishes academic teaching materials, no?
Irishamerican @ 6:42
You can edit PDF files by using the retail version of Adobe Acrobat. The free download Acrobat Reader won’t allow edits. Unless you have the time to learn the program, and the money to purchase it, I’d recommend just creating what you want in another program of your choice. Word, Powerpoint, or the non-MS versions of these as you see fit.
I have said this before and will say it again. One of the questions Bush least wants to hear is: “Why is Osama bin Laden still at large?”
Dems and the left should ask it again and again and again. The media ain’t gonna do it, so we have to.
Irishamerican@107…”I would think that at the least, being “fully informed” is the basis of the existance for a company that publishes academic teaching materials, no?”

The fact is, I am a Live Sound engineer and I mix on very large mixing consoles to very large audiences, but I have never learned anything about graphic arts. It would take me forever to do it. The fact that they present it as docudrama gives them weasel room to explain deviations from the truth…dramatic impact, and all that bullshit. The best antidote is to present the truth, which is that Bush got ample warning that a terrorist attack was imminent (the infamous daily briefing) and did nothing. As long as the FCC is under control of the WH (and it is, being in the executive branch), a complaint would get nowhere, which is not to say it should’t be done anyway, just to let them hear it. But don’t expect any help other than a polite letter.
The other point of attack were the failures of the CIA under toolie Tenet to countervail the manipulations and lies of Cheney and the OVP.
Finally, if Bush is so good at protecting us, why is Osama bin Laden still alive and taunting us at will? Letting Osama get away when he was holed up at Tora Bora is a far greater failure than any acts of ommission by Clinton.
here’s another point which is sorely overlooked
the clinton adminstration INVENTED THE INDUSTRY of “getting bin laden”, HE was the person the recgnized the threat, HE was the person that put the wheels in motion to even monitor the man
the reagan and the bush adminstration are the presidentcies that CAUSED the bin laden threat, clinton was the administration that tried to fix their incredibly irresponsible policies that caused the man to become the figure he became.
this has to be made CLEAR when the disvussion takes root
FWIW, neither Froomkin nor VandeHei are on Spotlight’s WaPo roster
off to teh foxwoods casino, if anyon’
s in the area and wants to meet for drinks, give a shout, I’ll check in with my pocket pc
Could this “docudrama” be an illegal campaign expenditure by a corporation? Being broadcast during the election season (November 7 is less than 60 days away, one might think that it was intended to influence a federal election.
I wish I could find some contacts for the local L.A. stations… but, sadly no… will hit ABC entertainment divisions…

I note that these “teaching aids” are framed as if the film were an accurate depiction of the conclusions of the 9/11 commission report. I think it is ok to use photoshopped images if the caption clearly explains that it is in fact a manipulated image for the purpose of political comment, parody, satire, whatever. It would still fall within the protection of freedom of speech, but not a lie because it is plainly labeled as a “fictional” image.
IANAL, but that is my opinion.
Having said that I would think there are still some boundaries beyond which FDL might be exposing itself to legal recourse. I don’t know. Some discussion of this issue might be worthwhile among the many brilliant legal minds here.
I’ve already sent an email to ABC protesting the airing of this “documentary”. I would like to also send letters to their advertisers/sponsors. Anyone have any ideas as to whom they might be? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
For the record I would like for moderators not to call commenters “an idiot” even if it was a joke—-this time.
It’s not the only time we’ve seen name-calling. While it is beyond my pay grade to speak to the relationship between moderators and commenters, isn’t this a little harsh?
Is this how we get people to join our coalition?
Rawstory has a piece up now indicating that ABC has pulled the blog site for this 9-11 “docu-drama” because writers were pointing out problems with the film. More of the same…..
Dear Egregious — anybody who would deliberately choose “Prince Myshkin”, the principal character in Dostoyevsky’s “The Idiot”, sets himself up for such tomfoolery, especially if he makes a mistake. In a way, I was paying homage to the commenter who would choose such a literary screenname.
I agree with Gilliard: send ABC an email telling them YOU and everyone you know will be watching FOOTBALL on Sunday and Monday nights.
Also, I informed them that I had “blocked” the ABC and Disney channels for my kids — they can watch Nick instead.
Plus, I informed them that I would be recommending to BOTH of my kids’ PTAs that we NOT do any Scholastic book fairs this year — switch to Chinaberry books or our local bookseller instead.
You need to let ABC/Disney know that you are NOT amused and NOT going to put up with their crap.
*ilson46201 @ 156
The point is that many of us are not so erudite as yourself and were (perhaps inappropriately) disquieted by the apparent name-calling.
How about some links to the people who decided to air this piece of shit, so we can carpet bomb them with emails?
*ilson46201 @ 155
Careful *ilson, or the net nannies will get you for your lack of PC credentials! :)
IMHO, this may present an opportunity for a counterstrike. Rather than simply rebutting this docudrama as “incorrect,” let’s use it as an illustration of wingnut propaganda techniques. In fact, children should study it in school. Their assignment should be to go to the many sources including the Internet and to compare and contrast the message being sent by ABC/Disney and their advertisers to the reality of what is known about the leadup to 9/11. We should have web sites ready for them to peruse, with long lists of print and online resources.

I’m in New Orleans, and have called the ABC affiliate stations with my complaint.
someone needs to send this to Thom Hartman cuz he was confronted by a caller that “clinton caused 9/11 — Osama was offered to him on a platter” and he didn’t point out that that was entirely false.
I spotlighted this one to the local NON-ABC affiliates btw…thought it would be helpful to give ABC’s competitors some ammunition, should they wish to use it.
*ilson46201 @ 155
Thanks for your explanation, *ilson. As a fellow Dostoyevsky fan, I got the joke, but also wondered how other people would react.
Kurt, this isn’t about PC and nannies. It’s about not shooting our own troops. Say fuck all you want, but don’t discourage our own people who are trying to throw these bastards out of office.

Yes, I love the picture too. It shows that Bush is such an adept reader that he does it upside down and backwards (look at the book in his hands).
Umm…rather than deciding to “watch football” instead of ABC, how about going out and actually playing football — or tennis, or bowling, or playing cards with your neighbors, or writing a letter to the editor, reading a book, baking a cake? There are lots of ways that we enjoy an evening that don’t involve plunking ourselves down in front of the boob tube.
To me, the issue isn’t whether people watch the docudrama or boycott it. Some people certainly should watch it, so it gets the critical scrutiny it deserves.
The most disturbing thing for me in all of this is ABC’s obvious ploy to cultivate right-wing bloggers with advance DVDs of “The Path to 9/11,” while stonewalling other people who might actually question their presentation of the facts. Jennifer Nix has written a blog post describing the evasive response she got when she started asking last week to see a review copy of the film. If the film’s producers and PR people really thought it was simply a fair retelling of the facts, they’d have sent DVDs out to people across the spectrum, instead of targeting sympathetic right-wingers. That’s standard practice when promoting a film. Even Mel Gibson held advance screenings of “The Passion of the Christ” for Jewish groups that were charging him with anti-Semitism.
By withholding advance screenings from everyone but rightwingers, ABC gets to have it both ways. On the one hand, they milk the right-wing buzzosphere for controversy and publicity; on the other hand, they minimize or neutralize substantive criticism from everyone else by saying, “you shouldn’t judge the film until you’ve seen it.”
Who plays Monica Lewinsky?

*ilson, you have more patience that I do if you can do a conductor’s score.
Or we can say anything at all that we want, and let the moderators sort it out. Instead of coming in and acting like we own the place, and bossing people around and telling them how to talk. It’s been brought up before…the concern isn’t appreciated, and has a chilling effect on free expression.
Egregious
I agree with you in principle, Though I got The joke and thought it witty.
I think *ilson’s joke did not go over the line, but also “get” why you be concerned that someone who did not recognize the reference might mistake it for a smackdown
“I believe the title was ‘Bin Laden Determined To Strike Within The United States’”
Wigwam’s suggestion for a “counterstrike” to use this ploy as an opportunity to teach schoolchildren about propaganda is a good one. This is the kind of stunt that requires many actions on many fronts to expose the lies and deceptions on the public.

Yeah, Clinton, et al, really handled the terror threat well. They set George Bush up to be a hero to most of America, by lobbing him a softball.
Oh, that’s right- Bush the idiot brilliantly pulled off 9/11- an inside job.
By the way, what was it Sandy Berger stuffed down his pants, anyway?
Contact advertizers and tell them we will not buy any of thier product if they sponser this show.
The ABC site has pop up ads as a reference.
We must contact ABC and tell them we will contact all advertisers of this program, and tell them we are going to boycott their products for advertising on this sham of a show.
Did anybody mention or notice that Bush’s book is upside down??
The Daily Show and Colbert Report will clean ABC’s clock when they return from their Labor Day break.
Stewart and Colbert will call bullshit whatever in the ABC docu-fantasy needs calling bullshit. As will Olbermann.
I will definitely be watching these three programs on Monday, September 11th.
I find what ABC (and all the rightwing nuts) are doing highly offensive, especially since so many of our courageous first responders on 9/11 died in defense of truth, liberty and justice for all.
In other words, is this the wingnuts idea of an honorable memorial to those people killed on 9/11 by some fanatical, right-wing, religious fundamentalist nuts?
Simply put, Bill Clinton made keeping an eye on and stopping the al Qaeda a TOP, TOP, TOP PRIORITY, while George W. Bush and his crack(ed) national security team decided to blow off the al Qaeda threat…and 9/11 happened.
That is the simple truth. And ABC’s scandalously partisan ?docudrama? cannot change that. Which means that the Republican head of ABC, the screenwriter and director are traitors…to the truth. And our democracy.
Maggie #166 & Linda #181,
I was informed earlier in this thread that the photo of Bush holding the book upside-down was altered. T- #42 has a link that describes the alteration in detail. Bummer, I was hoping it was real.
Jane, if your reading this, is it possible to post a photo of yourself for your fans? Google Images only has the one black & white.
Keep up the good work. You’re one of our heros!
I think having the members of the 9/11 Commission - especially Kean - refute this propaganda piece - would go a long way toward negating the impact. Any idea where they weigh in on this and on Kean’s involvement?
Disney - the same corporation that tried to stifle Fahrenheit 9/11.
#185
Kean served as an advisor on this piece of propaganda! I don’t think he will have too much negative to say about it!
At any point in this “docudrama,” is there a scene where a memo entitled “Bin Laden Determined To Strike In US” falls on Condi Rice’s desk? Or does that not fit the ideology of the assholes at ABC?
In 1983, ABC aired a made-for-TV movie called “The Day After”. If you don’t remember it, the Wikipedia article about it is good.
In a nutshell, the movie was a controversial (but compelling) look at nuclear war. From the Wikipedia article:
I was in high school when The Day After was aired, and it made a huge impact on me. Of equal importance was the post-film debate that ABC aired, pitting Carl Sagan against William F. Buckley, Jr. Sagan won going away, as I saw it, although of course he had the wind of the movie behind him.
Perhaps our best hope this time around is to get ABC to host a similar post-presentation discussion/debate. In a perfect world, it would be Clinton v. Bush. However, I don’t know if they are willing to admit that they are in a proxy war of their own. (I think back to the dedication of the Clinton library with horror; Clinton saying Bush was a good guy, and Bush muttering about a devastating submarine strike from the Arkansas river.)
The point is, a post-presentation debate (realistically, between the co-chairs of the 9/11 commission?) or discussion (involving more of the panel) could be a good framework for a reality check. Those people who were most affected by the show — the people that we are worrying about, I think — would probably stay on for a 20-30 minute post-mortem. There is a reasonable chance that they would be receptive to thoughtful arguments.
Clinton v. Bush would be awesome. It could forcefully mark the end of the myth of the “liberal media”, coming after such an awful hit piece. No more Republican whining, playing the victim, etc. I’m smiling just thinking about Clinton’s jujitsu maneuvers and Bush’s complete meltdown. But back to reality…
What do you think?
(I know this is seriously EPU’d, but I couldn’t find an email address for Sheldon Rampton.)
I sent the following to the ABC address listed below. ABC has a 500 character limit so it took two mailings.

I faithfully watch the ABC Evening News w/ Mr. Gibson plus the Weekend news. I am ending my long association w/ ABC News b/c of the fake-u-drama “The Path to 9/11″ due to air on Sep 10/11.
As far as I’m concerned, when the State Dept in April 2001 takes bin Laden off the terrorist watch list the resultant disaster falls on Mr. Bush’s shoulders.
In parallel w/ the last para, is the fact that only Limbaugh and other neo-con fifth columnists got to initially review the film to get positive buzz is an attempt to influence the Nov midterm elections in favor of the cabal currently in power.
I intend to write all major advertisers on all ABC shows I can see, telling them of what I call “despicable conduct” on ABC’s part.
Speaking of falsehoods, perhaps you shouldn’t use a fake photo in your lede?

My son is in grade school. Every month he brings home a Scholastic brochure from which he orders books. I emailed Scholastic and told them that so long as they are encouraging children and their families to watch a politically biased television series that has been proven to be misleading, Scholastic books will not be allowed in our home. This is not the purpose of an “educational” organization and we will henceforth discard the monthly Scholastic brochure and instead buy our books online and in stores. (We usually order 5 or 6 books a month from Scholastic).
If you are a parent, please email Scholastic and let them know that you do not approve of their perpetration of misleading, politically motivated television shows and that you will boycott Scholastic. If you are not a parent, but you know progressive parents, please let them know about this and give them this website address from which they can email Scholastic.

Unfortunately, the stations you’re referring to are CBS stations in reaction to a different program which that network is running, not the ABC six-hour drama. The CBS program is the documentary by the Naudet brothers which previously ran to much acclaim. It focuses on the firefighters and is a real documentary, not a recreated docudrama like ABC’s entertainment program.
Don’t expect much reaction from ABC; they know that it’s the right-wing fanatics who are ones they need to keep happy, because they are the ones who threaten sponsor boycotts with predictable regularity in response to assaults on their point-of-view. The other side isn’t as well organized and hasn’t, at least in the past, seriously offered any assaults on the most important thing to the networks, which is, of course, profit and nothing else. It’s not an ideological choice at all…it’s just more efficient business and less hassle than trying to placate a bunch of frothing right-wingers.
ABC is making happy exactly the people they’re trying to with their movie, all the better to sell Disneyland and diapers.
I’ve already contacted the superintendent of my school district. Students have to have permission from home to watch controversial film. Probably the only ones watching it will be children of right wingers.

Yes, this is important. Boycotting Disney isn’t enough. A concerted effort to boycott ABC’s sponsors might have an effect. Do people not realize how often extreme right-wing organizations influence decisions through threats of boycotts? They’ve proven how much power small groups can have. I’d like to see a group like MoveOn get together a list and make it easy to identify the sponsors and let them know people will stop buying their products.
re: the picture
This is a fabricated picture. Look at the back cover. The black, bat shaped figure near the idiot’s left index finger should be near the spine on the child’s book.
Small point, but when demanding truth from power, use truth yourself.

OK. So I’ve read all about how the Clinton familia worked so..so diligently to capture Bin Hiding. Right, what a load! Well the facts are, and are indisputable, except that the left seems to ignore facts and reality, is that every administration in the past 50 years has experienced terrorist attacks…in one form or another. Some have been pro-active while others were too busy watching polls and getting noggin. This is why we’re in the spot we’re in. So don’t forget it!!
Go to http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ho/pubs/fs/5902.htm to see all the “recorded” attacks and you’ll be amazed at how many there really are/were.
Now, let’s get to the facts again. All administrations have failed, even our current administration to an extent, however, the 1993 WTC attack happened on Slick Willy’s watch and no, he didn’t stop that attack, now did he? (How can a terrorist that is blind attack us? It still baffels me.) The USS Cole was attacked and he didn’t stop it either..did he? Oh, and what about those Taliban types that were plotting and planning along with Bin Hiding for years and Clinton and Sandy Burglar new all about them and guess what, they admittedly did nothing about them, except allow them to multiply and terrorize women and children. So all you Clinton lovers need to look closely at your #1 rock star before you throw the proverbial stone, because not only did Bush inherit this problem along with a recession, he had less than six months to come up to speed, and guess what, do you honestly think that his predecessor was forthcoming with this information, especially after the 2000 election fiasco…I think not. If you believe that they were forthcoming, you’re dumber than I thought.
The fact is, have we had an attack on our soil since 911? The answer is no, but many attempts have been foiled…haven’t they? 911 was a rude awakening for all of us and unless we let our President continue to provide cutting edge protection for our homeland, we’ll be attacked again.
My point is that if you want to place blame, place it on the terrorists, not our Presidents!!! Although some deserve more than others.
We were attacked on 911 and there is nothing we can do to reverse this tragedy except one thing. Nuke em till they glow then shoot em in the dark!! That’s a joke, but I’m also serious.
God bless our military.
Judging from the early reviews, there appears to be a logical hole in the film “The Path to 9/11.” The Clinton administration was not alone in the government, there was the role played by a very vocal Republican Congress that was busily attacking the president. But you will not recall their having attacked the administration for failing to pursue the terrorists, nor for failing to act to protect the nation from terrorism (Clinton’s 1996 legislation to prevent terrorism, which featured all of the elements that might have prevented 9/11.).
The Republicans did not support Clinton’s 1996 Omnibus Legislation to prevent terrorism. They did not support any of the initiatives to attack the terrorists, because they did not want to stand with the president while they believed that their attack campaign might win in domestic politics. Playing the “Monica Card” was more important to them than protecting this nation. If you want to expose the true villians, they are not hard to find and the evidence does not have to be fabricated.
Prior to 9/11, the real traitors were the Republicans in congress.
After 9/11, the real war launched by Bush was a scheme to rob America. If there had been a real war on terrorism we would have had 150,000 troops in Afghanistan to surround, contain and capture the enemy, as NATO and the American War College recommended. Instead we had 150,000 troops where the enemy wasn’t, but we sure made a haven for them. By failing to get them while we could, we made Iraq and Pakistan into safe havens.
Boy, paranoia strikes deep.
It’s about time the liberal media presented the other side, fact or fiction. I see it’s not being played on Fox.
In fact, maybe the liberal media will apologize to the President, Vice President, Rove and Libby for hanging them before they were tried. This would be a novel idea. Now that the facts are out about the left’s almighty Mr. Plame, is an apology due? Chances are slim that will happen.
I also believe, as you do Dan, that the 1994 Rep. held congress was not as supportive of the Clinton agenda as they should have been, but let’s be honest, when you look at how he believed in the “long bomb” over “boots on the ground”, wouldn’t you think, maybe for one little second, that he was looking at the polls? Remember Viet Nam…I certainly do.
As far as going to war goes, the funniest part about this fundamental executive authority that Congress gave the President, is that it WAS OVERWHELMINGLY SUPPORTED BY CONGRESS AT THE TIME..and now that the war is unpopular and the left sees blood in the water to take back power, they’re licking their lips. The only ones that didn’t support the President were idiots like Cynthia Macidiot who thinks GW bombed the WTC himself.
Thus far, I can recall 95% of my friends on the left all supported this war from the onset,( except the ones that think they can negotiate with a terrorist) and now the majority of them say Bush lied…again, what a load.
The fact remains that no mater how intellectually superior some on the left might think they are, they are limp-spined, power hungry phonies that never, and I mean never, vote their heart, only their party.
When I read such venomous bloogs about how Bush lied, kids died and how the White House tried to destroy Mr. Plame, or that Bush new about 911 before it happened, or that Dick Cheney signed the Haliburton contracts himself, it makes our side want to go on the attack. Huh, that’s funny, both sides do the same thing…another novel idea….attack the other side for lies…with lies. Just look at how the left acts in a frenzy when the Bush administration does something that might lower their approval rating. You jump all over it just like the Republicans did during the Clinton era.
I guess my point still stands that if we really wanted to unite against the terrorists, who by the way, didn’t wake up yesterday and decide to become terrorists. These people were born and then educated as terrorists for the past twenty-five years or so to become terrorists so they could get $25K for their families when they “sploded” themselves and killed westerners. Yes, there are exceptions, such as the ex-Iraqi regime that wants power back…yes we know this, so give it a break.
My question to any liberal is just this. “Do you honestly, and I mean honestly, not just a thought off the top of your head, believe that the war on terrorism has created more terrorists, or have we finally opened our eyes to see that they’ve been there all the time?”
When you say things like “The Republicans did not support Clinton’s 1996 Omnibus Legislation to prevent terrorism.” You shoot holes in your argument through generalities and you look bias and foolish because we all know, from an intellectual standpoint that it wasn’t “completely” true.
Conversly and once again, the democrats in Congress overwhelmingly supported the President on going into Iraq.
If history proves that GW was right, do you think he should get an apology? Or will the left clam up in order to save face?
I know these are tough questions for those that purely think politically, but I would want to believe that discourse can be fun and not always hateful. Although that is fun sometimes too.
felagund @ 4

People-wake up! Hijacking 911. Heck, they have hijacked the media for a fascist propaganda spill. There are internment camps being built as we speak–for AMERICANS!!!!! Be vigilant.
ABC has hit its low point trying to politicize on 9-11 as well as all those Conservatives. 9-11 occured under Bush under his watch but Bush refused to do nothing. These Conservatives are out to politicize on 9-11 for their benefit. They wanted 9-11 to happen so that they can keep in power. I know that they’re hoping for another 9-11 to occur so that the Republicans can win in this fall elections. Desperate people do desperate things.
