"Not many people know it, but the Fuhrer was a terrific dancer."
for the week ending 9/2/06:
Well, color my shirt brown! I didn’t know that the Global War on TRRRRRR! was actually all about the Nazis and Fascists. Lo and behold, there was Bush and his putsch posse this week, led by the non compos mentis SecDef Rumsfeld and Nosferatu Cheney, dredging up images of Neville Chamberlain fellating Hitler as a stern warning to anyone who disagrees with their policies on combating "Islamofascism": support the Bush campaign to eradicate terrorism from every cobwebbed corner of the universe or wind up investing your nest egg in knee pads, Chapstick, and camel feed.
Methinks Karl Rove gave a crash course in the run-up to WWII for the Republican party talking points but left out those niggling, irritating details about the political foundations of to-to-totali-totalitarianism. But hey, it feels so good to shriek "Islamofascists!" and watch all those gated communities pull up their sidewalks and shutter their windows in fear.
And then there was Bush, marking the first anniversary of his administration’s "sssh, we want to make New Orleans whiter than Laura’s ass" response to Hurricane Katrina by executing a stumbling pas de "duh" with a waitress from Betsy’s Pancake House in New Orleans. "Are you going to turn your back on me, Mr. President?" snapped the waitress, who was merely trying to maneuver around the Flapjack in Chief and his photo op staff so she could do her job. "No," Chimpy McFuckup replied, adding after a brief pause, "Not again."
Paging Dr. Freud, Dr. Freud to the blond haired, blue eyed courtesy phone, please.
In his inimitable way, the Rude Pundit skewers the remedial English primer Bush calls his "strategy to win":
Call it the Elision of Evil, the Axis of Yadda-Yadda-Yadda. When you’re up against an ideology – when you’re fighting theory and thought instead of people and nations – you don’t have to worry about the niceties of reality like the lives of actual embodied people who bleed. You only need to worry about point A and point Z. B through Y are for non-believers.
Charlie Pierce over at TAPPED elaborates: "is it too much to ask that . . . the president of the United States not sound like a 12-year-old babysitter speaking to a room full of toddlers?"
Tbogg gives a crash course in "Marketing Your Product: It’s All in Your Name." (Clip of Eddie Izzard is, of course, a much-appreciated bonus.)
The pantywaists over at the Corner have a competition to name Bush’s "all or nothing" ideology. Roy at alicublog is the only sober judge in the lot.
Speaking of the Cornerites, Nim, aka the Hamhock of Liberty, reviews their "2006 Predictions" and finds, yet again, that they have a batting average worse than an armless corpse.
zuzu at feministe is more than a little dubious that Jonah of the Holy Pantload could be such a naif. Remember: "bad stuff happens during disasters."
Rising Hegemon was fortunate enough to get a hold of the galleys for Dick Cheney’s forthcoming biography. It’s a fascinating read.
But hey, it’s not all gloom and doom for the soldiers in Iraq and their loved ones at home. General J.C. Christian notes that the new cardboard trend catching fire in Maine.

D r i f t g l a s s is very upset about the Katie Couric "photoshop" debacle. But he also provides us with insight into the next software upgrade.
And just for fun, Scott Lemieux over at Lawyers, Guns and Money has found a spate of sprezzatura. Just remember to wash your hands afterward.

I blame Clinton for Hitler.
TeddySanFran!
There was one group of people in the U.S. that was totally against entering WWII in the early 40’s. That would be the Republicans.
Jim Lobe at antiwar.com has a handle on this too:
Nexis, for example, cited 56 uses of “Islamofascist” or “Islamofascism” in separate programs or segments aired by Fox News compared with 24 by CNN over the past year. Even more striking, the same terms were used in 115 different articles or columns in the Washington Times, compared with only eight in the Washington Post over the same period, according to a breakdown by Nexis.
Similarly, the Washington Times used the words “appease” or “appeasement” – a derogatory reference to efforts by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to avoid war with Nazi Germany before the latter’s invasion of Poland – in 25 different articles or columns that dealt with alleged threats posed by Ahmadinejad, compared to six in the Post and only three in the New York Times.
Well worth a read!

Islamofascism is a stoopid wordsmithian, jingoistic, fallacy- laden mistrooth.
American fascism is real, though and coming to your neighborhood next. Get out your coupons for the discount version!

From the last thread on the “Path to 9/11″ drama coming up on ABC.
I say let’s give them some pushback, fire off angry e-mails, and threaten boycotts. But let us not take our eye of the ball here, which is the November elections. Anything that takes energy away from the elections is problematic in my view.
As a political football, 9/11 is so 2003. Wasn’t Brittney Spears on top of the world then? 2006 is about Iraq. 2006 is about Bush’s failure to govern properly. 2006 is about fighting an incompent campaign to track down terrorists. 2006 is about stocking the government agencies with incompent cronies. I could go on and on, but really 2006 is ABOUT FUCKING IRAQ.
IRAQ. LATHER. RINSE. REPEAT.
When I reflect on George Bush and fascists or communists, or whatever, whether it’s Mussolini, Franco, Hitler, Mao, Stalin, czars, kings, queens etc., the word that comes to mind is dictator.
I have found a new barometer for “too much Teddy-time on the interwebs this weekend:” if I’ve already clicked on more than half of watertiger’s snarkfest, I need to get out more!
So, *pouf!*

Down with salamifascism! It’s wurst than communism. I never sausage nonsense.
Actually the more they use the word in meaningless ways, the less it means. So I like it that they are slathering it over everything like mayonnaise. It’s like saying “Paris Hilton” or “Tom Cruise” these days, guaranteed to produce a glazed look.
The best response when your Republican friends/relatives use the word is just to laugh. Don’t even argue. Just laugh.
OT but deeply observant Hadassah and even Bar Mitzvah Boy Gerstein may want, even NEED, to pass this on to her husband Kapo Joe.
From Raw Story…
“You know what I’m gonna tell those Jews when I get to Israel, don’t you Herman?” a then Governor George W. Bush allegedly asked a reporter for the Austin American-Statesman.
When the journalist, Ken Herman, replied that he did not know, Bush reportedly delivered the punch line: “I’m telling ‘em they’re all going to hell.”
It’s from soon to be published book about Rove by two Texas-based reporters, Austin-based journalist James Moore and Wayne Slater, senior political reporter for the Dallas Morning News.
The book will be released this Tuesday.
Here is its Amazon page: The Architect.

I am laughing all the way to November you smart OJS! Go Team!
angie @ 6
The use of the term “Islamofascism”, beyond blaming a religion for the political acts of some of its adherents, is a deliberate Rovian ploy to make you think “terrorism” is exactly what it is not–a movement grounded in a particular country, one that can be defeated by conventional military means. Fascism is corporate statism. Al Quaeda and the numerous other movements lumped together with it are based neither on corporatism or in a nation-state. Rove is trying to subliminally convince the Murcan People that we are fighting a country, not a movement. You know, like World War II, a war that had widespread public support.
Watertiger,
How apt! Congratulations, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say it better!
Thanks Watertiger!
I promise Part 3 will be out tomorrow.
“whiter than Laura’s ass” My God! better be wearing two or more pairs of Ray Bans. The reflection could kill.

Birds of a feather, and all that.
One group of local Repubs, fresh back from Italy and Germany, said we needed less democracy and more fascism.
And then proceeded to plot a coup against FDR.
The leopard has not changed his spots.
“Nosferatu Cheney” priceless!
I have to pass this along to people more involved in the Plame/Fitzgerald stuff than me because my head hurts after reading this. Here’s a wingnut who believes that Judith Miller is part of the New York Times conspiracy to undermine the War on Terror and that Patrick Fitzgerald convened a Grand Jury at some point to fight it.
In the grand traditions of MSM fellatio journalism:
“Grand honor: George W. slept here
President joins hotel’s list of famous guests”
[snip]
” Bush’s cuisine hankerings were much simpler. He breakfasted on fresh berries and muffins from the hotel bakery, and made no requests for stocking the wet bar in his 2,000-square-foot suite..”
Hmmm. I didn’t know that Presidential visits were BYOB.

Bringing forward the post from the previous thread, with some additonal info and new links…
The director of the Path to 9/11 is the son of the founders of the Evangelical Christian organization Youth With A Mission. While generally viewed as a positive organization, it has been criticized for cult-like behavior and the teaching of “aberrant theology”. Including the support of Moral Government Theology and Momentus Training. (please click on the links to read about this stuff, I am certainly no expert).
Momentus snippet:
Another quote from the author of the Apologetics site linked above:
Sorry for the long post, but that this would be relevant to the subject, of a movie that attempts to distort 9/11 and whose director is involved with an organization whose followers believe “… that God would bless us for our obedience to leaders … even when we knew them to be wrong.”, should be evident.
Well, apropos of their Goin’ With The Wind 9/11 epic of the epicine Rove, Disney just announced yet ANOTHER DVD derangement of The Lion King which will be perfectly consistent with so much of their current socio-political-religious direction.
It’ll be THE LION KING: 99 and 100/100ths PERCENT WHITE!
James Earl Jones will be replaced as the voice of Simba by someone imitating the sadly stricken Charlton Heston.
Mr. Jones (or someone imitating him quite well but with a fine movie-style “Arab” accent) will return as the voice of the the deformed and therefore wicked Scar.
Authentic? Sane? No problem!
Which reminds me…
Hakuna Matana will be replaced by… HAKUNA MACACA!!!
The new lyric has not yet been officially published but a copy of the lyric sheet found its way out of the newly renamed Magical Thinking Kingdom.
Timon: (incidentally no longer Nathan Lane but Larry The Cable Guy)
“Hakuna Macaca — what a wonderful truth!”
Pumbba: (no longer Ernie Sabella but Sean Hannity)
“Hakuna Macaca — it’ll play in Duluth!”
Together:
“It means no darkies ’til the end of our days!
It’s our black/Arab/Indian/Asian/Mexican-free society!
Hakuna Macaca!”
Church groups are already buying several years worth of seats. Black church groups will remain undecided until they see that the the newly duskied up villain Scar is no longer just dripping Jeremy Irons’ patented spleen but now actively gay. Rove has assured Roy Disney that’ll draw ‘em in. (But he said it on the downlow.)
So Eisner’s gone and Roy Disney is back… with all of Walt’s racism, Jew-hatred and redbaiting made as up to date as life can be in the vacuum of Main Street, USA.
Thanks watertiger for a great post.

angie,
that’s GREAT!
Definition:
salamifascism: authoritarian form of government in which only government approved salami may be manufactured, sold, and consumed. Each parcel of fascist salami shall carry the motto: No matter how thin you slice it, it must be state-approved salami. The word “salamifascism” is often confused with the word “islamofascism,” which once referred to anyone whose words, speech, or action deviated from official Rovism (a now defunct political movement), but due to misapplication and overuse, “islamofascism,” is seldom used, and is relegated to obscure etymological tomes. However, desperate politicians still evoke “islamofascism” hoping to frighten bored, timorous, and impressionable voters.
the administration invoking the term fascist is what they always do
they call their opponents what they are, and since they say it first it’s it difficult to use the term on them
they are fascists in every sense of the word, from the original definition, which was “corporatism” to the evolved definition
the president himself authorized torture, and after congress passed a law stating that no, he had to abide by our law and renounce torture he couldn’t do it, when we torture it hurts OUR soldiers and our own national security, he made a statement that said yes, he could torture, he didn’t have to obey our law
the CIA themselves have said there were FAR more effective methods to acquire information from prisoners, and the information acquired through torture PAILS by comparison in quantity and quality, yet they insist on torture never the less
the president claimed he could arrest someone and THEN write a new law specifically for that person to justify that arrest
does any of this remind anyone of someone in particular?…the name begins with an H
he claims he can write the law after the person is arrested…that he can just make up any law he wanted without any legislative protocol…any law at all
for instance, he could make it illegal to pray on sunday and nobody can say his law is not valid…NOBODY…I am NOT kidding, that’s what he claims
the person arrested would never know the law he was charged?..he would never have the right to prove he didn’t do it…never ever…
the persons lawyer would never know the charge or see the evidence, could never mount a defense, could never gather evidence to disprove the claims…the persons lawyer wouldn’t be allowed at the trial
the president rescinded the law that holds Americans responsible for any crime in Iraq…even cold blooded murder, even rape of children in front of their parents
for instance, now an American can drive down the highway in Iraq, he can shoot the parents in a car on a family drive with their children…he can do this while laughing with friends, talking and joking,…they can film what they are doing, set it to the music of Elvis Presley, they can post the video on the internet without fear of prosecution
the president rescinded the law that made this a crime and there is no law to hold them to account..
this already happened, fact, and that’s what the president approved?…cuz that’s what he did
the president is right now, as we speak, trying to make it illegal if the press exposes crime against America by people in government
the president’s very policies, you know, those converting public resources into corporate control…those…that is the definition of fascism
the president is a fascist, there is NO question about it, his very principles define the word
and of course there is the history, Prescott bush and all that
the president claims he is above the law, above the constitution
and if anyone is left with any doubt, all they ave to do is compare the patriot act to the enabling act
the highest levels in the administration right now are members of a fraternity that has been trying to attack Iraq since before the president came into office
they even published their plan, internet dated, stating the country needs another pearl harbor to convince the American people attacking Iraq was a good idea, also stated in their charter, they wanted global unrest
we are all puppets right now of fascists, our strings being pulled like marionettes, our children will live in the world that is being created
the people in the administration, right now, as we speak, are the very people that projected their plan to create worldwide unrest in order to put planetary treasure in their personal pockets…they are in office right now, this is not a theory, it’s not an opinion, it’s a fact
they pull the strings very nicely, even republicans are actually saying it’s fine for the government to steal their information with no one to check to make sure the information they are getting is for national security, this is how far people have changed to protect their party leader
Republicans were once for keeping the government out of your personal lives, they were for small government, they were for stronger military, not weakened, they were for international respect, they were for integrity of office, they were for keeping jobs in America, republicans were for law and order, and they were for protecting the constitution our forefathers risked their lives to give to you and me
all of these principles are now abandoned because the man raping those principles claims he is a Republican
he’ NOT a republican and it’s time the REAL republicans reclaimed their party
“Hakuna Macaca!”

How dare you say such a thing!
Not true!!
Other than bringing about The Spanish Inquisition, malaria and
degenerative spleen disease, CLINTON is innocent of all charges!
OK, OK, he’s partly responsible for The Chupacabra killings, BUT ONLY PARTLY!
The Mexican genetic research lab that actually bred and incubated the creature does bear some responsibility as well, even if many of the Chupacabra’s victims were actually killed as a result of the monster’s rage over the Clinton/Lewinsky affair.
To be fair & balanced, the blame must
be shared.
Methinks Karl Rove gave a crash course in the run-up to WWII for the Republican party talking points
I’m the last person to defend Karl Rove, but I don’t think it was anything that sophisticated. The VFW leadership is still dominated by WW2 vets, all whom are quite old now. So equating “The War on Terrrr” to fighting fascism is just playing to the elderly choir.

Do you have a definition for the word “macaca”?
me to me 37-
The way you’ve said it is so clear and so heartbreaking… If only one of our representatives would take your words, every word, and find a public place to shout it out loud – even the dumbest and most callous mofo in this country would have to feel the horror that BushCo now oversees. Incredible comment.
OJS — great comments upthread. thx

Excellent point, Jack.

Why didn’t Bill Clinton warn me about Brutus?!

Yes, but I stole it from wikipedia. Here it is:
It is ironical to note that the definition refers to its application to non-Caucasians, but as an East Indian, Mr. Sidharth is in fact Caucasian.
“Why didn’t Bill Clinton tell me hemlock was poison?”

PS to my #49:
This is very widely known by now, but just in case somebody missed it, Allen’s mother is a French colonial from Tunisia where the macaque monkey is indigenous. So it is a reasonable assumption that Allen picked up the term from her. However, he subsequently denied knowing what the term means, which is quite possible. You can use a slur intentionally without knowing what it means.
I mean how many people know what islamofascist means. I sure as heck don’t. I just know salamifascism. That is easy to understand.
Mr. Dean (to re-phrase my earlier question): In your opinion, is an authoritarian orthodoxy historically evident in the GOP? If so, is Bush #43’s administration a logical manifestation of that tendency? If not, what went haywire with that party?
orangejumpsuit @ 51
But isn’t that really why “Islamofascist” has so much mileage as a slur–because nobody knows what it means? Perhaps because even a casual knowledge of the forms authoritarianism takes when it interacts with Islamic/Middle Eastern cultures suggests that conflating Islam with fascism is inherently meaningless? A meaningless term resonating in an intellectual and cultural vacuum can serve any need of the moment. Any at all.
EvilDrPuma @ 53
Yeah. The conflation is not on the level of logic but of emotion: they are conflating two fears to multiply its effect.
Um… “islamofascist” is derived directly from feminazi.
Sonoma @ 52
You are on the wrong thread.
Watertiger: Great stuff as usaul. Thanks for the cardboard cutout link to Jesus’ General. What a riot!
It’s funny that the prototypes of todays conservative Republicans in the 30’s were oft times supporters of facism. Approving of Mussolini, sometimes Hitler but if not him directy then of the general concepts of the Nazi’s and their marriage with the capitalists.
It’s probably easy to go too far with this. Not everyone was Henry Ford, an enthusiastic Nazi supporter nor members of The Bund but without question a large element of American conservatism was not just objectivly but actively pro facist.
Bush’s granddaddy might not have been pro Nazi but he famously appreciated doing bussiness with them.
Hearing lectures on the evils of facism from Cheney is like hearing lectures on the evils of oral sex from Lucianne Goldberg. Absurd.
chimezatmidnight @ 55
Perhaps true…but I don’t think that changes the points being made, because I find the word “feminazi” to be an equally meaningless and therefore manipulable slur.
rapier @ 58
But if we accept Mussolini’s definition of fascism as the merging of corporate and government authority (okay, he stole it, but he got the most mileage out of it), and recognize that while not all fascists are Nazis, Nazism is a subset of fascism, then what is the operational difference between freely doing business with the Nazis and being “pro-Nazi?”
neurophius @ 42
I’ve said this a thousand times. It means a person with dark skin that can be compared with another mammal. Preferably not when you are being videotaped.
Why didn’t Bill Clinton tell me not to take a bite out of that apple?
———–Adam
Why didn’t Bill Clinton tell me that cake was not a nourishing meal for the masses?—-Marie Antionette
My mom was a girl in France when the Nazi’s came. My grandfather was a police captain who helped the movement.
I am a history buff and have read alot of WWII and this whole garbage is not like WWII.
The conservatives have so wanted to paint this war on terror as the new WWII for years. The Bushbots always bring up things like “Well, during WWII they…blah blah” and since Iraq has gone into the toilet and Dimwit finally admitted that Iraq and terror were not related and he hasn’t caught Bin Laden, ect., his minions have stepped up this WWII thing.
They probably caught some of the flying monkeys on Washington Journal making the comparison and took it from there.
W is so misunderstood. When he says “global war on terra” that’s exactly what he means!
