Upon learning Friday from ThinkProgress that Rush Limbaugh was shilling for the ABC docudrama, “The Path to 9/11,” which will air on ABC on September 10th and 11th, I smelled something rotten emanating from the Mickey Mouse Network. Having worked at Variety years back, I got out the old Rolodex and started making calls and sending emails. By mid-morning yesterday, I’d gotten the name of the exec-in-charge, Steve McPherson, his direct phone line and I’d sent email requests to two ABC flaks and three PR company flaks listed on the movie’s online press release. Later that afternoon, I sent a follow-up note to all five of these folks, repeating my request for a preview copy of the mini-series.
Apparently, it was impossible for all five of these people to answer me during business hours on either the East or West Coast, in order to get me the requested advance copy.
So, let’s review. This very high-profile movie is airing next weekend, and all five of the listed contacts were out all day yesterday, making it impossible to get advance copies? This, after ABC made the mini-series available to a plethora of wing-nut bloggers and media personalities like Mr. Limbaugh? How very, very odd.
These are the exact words that ABC’s Alison Row (not sure that’s the correct spelling, but pronunciation rhymes with “cow”) left on my voicemail at 5:07 pm PT:
"We are certainly happy to send [a copy of "Path to 9/11"] to you. It's a...there's no, you know...we're not sending it to only specific partisan groups, or...um...bloggers who lean a certain political way. We would love to get it to you as well. Unfortunately, everyone is gone today, but we can get it out to you Tuesday for Wednesday."
I'm sure advance copies are currently sitting with reviewers at major MSM outlets, and that they are timing their pieces to run and air closer to the air dates for “Path to 9/11. But with the early advance materials going exclusively to "friendly" right-wing partisan media, ABC was certain to get a first wave of favorable, sycophantic coverage from Limbaugh and the right-wing blogs, to perhaps—wink, wink—influence other reviewers.
ABC claims this is a non-partisan project, but according to Sheldon Rampton over at www.prwatch.org, the screenwriter is an avowed conservative and personal friend of Rush Limbaugh, and the project is fronted by only the Republican chair of the 9/11 Commission.
I ask you, ABC: Where are the Democratic contributors to this “non-partisan” project?
And whose idea was it to send preview copies to right-wing partisan bloggers, while excluding leftist partisans from viewing this “public service” project? Was it your network, or mPRm, the firm you hired to execute the outreach campaign? If it is indeed so non-partisan, why is the Democratic co-chair of the 9/11 Commission not out in front of this thing, giving it his official oky-doky?
And one more question: Is Kean a paid consultant? If so, how much is he now making by trading off his work as a former 9/11 Commission co-chair?
We’ll know more Tuesday, after ABC offers up Thomas Kean in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday. I hope the reporters on that call have the guts to ask the tough questions about ABC’s docudrama

This is going to be a big deal this week. We’re going to be covering it a lot, and later today we should have post from Sheldon Rampton of PR watch about just what a dissembling bit of business this thing is.
WTF? Gilliard had a good idea, just watch football and put their ratings in the toilet.
I have been hearing rumblings about this for a while and without seeing it it is hard to figure out what to do. One thought is to begin an immediate boycott of Disney and ask Dems to pressure Disney to pull the show. The neocons did that with CBS’s Reagan biopic.
I agree that no one should watch it and let their rating go in the tank, but I also think we should let their advertisers know beforehand that they will be wasting their money advertising during the show.
I have participated in this type of action with Americablog in the past and I am happy to spend sometime writing emails this week to let them know how appaling I find this. Hopeully, it won’t pollute our airways.
Let them sell it on pay-per-view like the neocon porn it is.
Fitz…hurry.
They can try to rewrite history, but w was on vaca and ignored not only the PDB but all things Clinton.
truth is truth.
PS– nice to see you again, Jennifer.
Isn’t this the media event that blames Clinton for 911?
Yay Jennifer!
Important stuff and time for us all to crank up our emails and outrage.
Jane,
All I can say is that Lionel Chetwynd must be eating his liver out of equal parts envy and desperation.
Why not? He created this whole disingenous approach.
Disney, post-Eisner, has looked at its product and its bottomline even more cynically than it did with him. (Pause to allow for series of small strokes.) This is no different than the partnership formed to make the Narnia films or of the marketing company they embraced alont with that.
So… my question is where is Steve Jobs in all of this? He’s the last person to whom I’d turn for a moral impulse generally… but this years too late mimicking for Roveian marketing has got to strike him as six years and several billion dollars too late.
What do you think?
It is not enough to simply not watch — they could care less and will continue this partisan BS. We need to be forceful — immediate boycott and a total public outcry. If we ban together, I think we can pressure them to pull it — when the neocons pulled CBS Reagan piece it sent a chill through the film community. To let this air unabated will have yet more chilling effects for all of us and embolden the right going into the elections.
Not to sideline this story and the sad state of hype the Right seems to be able to drum up, but I fear this “docudrama” is going to be a smokescreen for something really horrible in the news. Is this movie the Right’s answer to Loose Change?
Where do we start? What can I do today?
Something seems awfully wrong here. This really needs to be ramped up, but in a careful manner, never forgetting that often times conervofascists are simply trying to sucker us. Not be reactive but develop a strategic campaign against what is going on. The first thing that is needed is more definite information and specific instances of Bush tilt in the movie. I can’t believe a powerful Hollywood liberal (Streisand? Spielberg? Lear? Bill Clinton for Chrissakes!!!) is not able to get hold of one of these copies floating around and get it to people who will go through it with a fine tooth comb so we can make specific arguments.
In Hollywood if you work for Disney you just admit to working for “The Rat”. It’s been that way forever..
On an unrelated-but-not-really note, gas prices are going down … wanna bet they’ll be at their lowest point in quite a while in early November?
Jennifer thanks for the post. Am looking forward to the thrashing that ABC is going to take on this and that I am going to be a part of.
FDL!
The Nefarious Leslie @ 16
Oh you notices that 25 cent drop too. Yeah. How wierd. What can it all mean? Are we about to turn another corner in Iraq???
ABC is unlikely to drop this show. The most likely “best result” that we can hope for is to create enough of an uproar that they will be forced to have some kind of “bi-partisan” talking heads panel after the showing of the program to comment on the veracity of the show, methinks.
Yeah, this is this latest loophole for campaign contributions.
Big Oil making a ‘contribution’ by manipulating the prices to double what they should be.
Who will be the first Republican to take credit for this?
How many more are standing in line?
How high will the price go once the elections are over?
Fascism = The merger of corporation and state.

ET just pointed out in the EPU zone - and I was just watching - the CNN “This Week in War” use of nasty propaganda piece to hype up attack on Iran … the combo of the ABC mini and this stuff makes me very worried … we’re going to have to work real hard this week!
There have been a buttload of diaries over at dKos about this odious film. Here is one with affiliate info, should one wish to boycott or threaten to boycott the Disney subsidiaries, or their advertisers.
Though I must say that I’m dismayed and a little shocked by the number of commenters over there who refuse to stop watching a tv show to drive down its ratings…you’d think progressives had a little more grambah than that.
FS @ 11
ANybody know who the advertisers are ?????
Let’s get busy folks, calling and writing to them. Can somebody put up a list?
Also, we need to flood ABC with phone calls and emails.
I read somewhere this is being done be the entertainment division, not the news division. So, that means they admit it is fiction?
Not only was it being hyped by “el rushbo” but he was claiming that WJC was out there aggressively trying to get it stopped or at least editorialized. Rush’s “sources” have been feeding him this inside info.
If only Bill Clinton’s penis had stopped Bin Laden.
Fuck ABC and Fuck Tom Kean and his asswipe son.
Let’s get some action going on this asap.
I am sick of the propaganda.

FS @ 11
I absolutely agree.
Thank you Jennifer and to second Mary McCurnin at 13 “Where do we start? What can I do today?”
Oh and speaking of propaganda hit pieces, check out this article at Sadly, No, about a suspicious YouTube group that popped up a few days ago, if you haven’t seen it already.

Here’s the contact info for ABC affiliates.

You would think CLinton would be calling in a couple few favors (like the Reagans did), just out a sense of self preservation.
I’ll tell you one thing. I wouldn’t mind working up a treatment for an Iran Contra scandal “docudrama”
Bloggers that lean a certain way…
Boy that sure sounds ominous! What kind of fraud
and deception are they serving up? Another
attack on Bill Clinton?

I was just wondering the same thing. I noticed that where I live in the Midwest, gas prices have dropped dramatically over the past week or two. I was wondering whether this was a result of something the Bush administration is doing, or whether it is just the oil industry trying to help their petro-friendly members of Congress get re-elected.

I have asked mine not to air this tripe. I emailed them that if they air it, I will monitor its sponsors, and then contact each of them about my displeasure with their sponsorship of this tripe.
The key here is advertisers and sponsors. I don’t know how to determine them prior to airtime. But that’s the best plan.
The rightwingnut’s attack on the CBS St. Reagan biopic should be our model: OFF THE AIR with this tripe. Mentioning any upcoming FCC licensing hearings to the local affiliate can’t hurt either.
Thanks, Jennifer — thanks, FDL.
Kurt @ 27
that is VERY interesting… I’m think we are going to see a lot more groups posing as Democrats with ugly attitudes…
Cozumel
Thanks, but I was thinking specifically about the major advertisers who are lined up for this. I saw an add today for it, and it is being presented wo commercial interuption which means they have one or two very big advertisers paying for the whole thing as underwriters.
Mondo/Huge corporate sponsorship. I want to know who they are. Those corporations need to hear from us. Not Disney so much, Disney already has the bills covered on this one. They are gonna get paid unless we make the corpoarte underwriters rethink their position.
Also, I wonder, and wish I had time to do the research this week, if this violates FEC camapign finance rules? It’s basically a campaign commercial. A really long cmapagn commercial.
helina handbasket @ 19
As in the Sunday Morning “bi-partisan” line-up?
neurophius @ 32
Um, the difference being what exactly?
Jennifer, thanks as per usual, for the crystal clear post.
Brainstorming: Does it make sense to try to identify/join with/ Middle Eastern groups in the US to try to get ABC to pull it as another example of white supremacy?
I doubt ABC will “pull it,” but perhaps we could argue that the current situation in Iran makes this a bad time.
Jewish Voice for Peace is a group that protested IDF bombings in Lebanon, perhaps they would recognize the damage this film could do.
I agree with Jennifer’s concern about advance copies of this
piece of shit. It’s critical to find out if it is any good technically or otherwise. DW Griffiths BIRTH OF A NATION was technically far ahead of its time. The problem was for its time, it was very slick KKK propoganda. DW recanted the white supremacy in his next film, but it didn’t undue the damage done by BIRTH OF A NATION.ABC just bought ESPN, so if anyone has any pull with ESPN, that’s an avenue. I’m going to write ESPN and tell them if ABC airs this, I have to think very seriously about canceling my subscription.
Another idea is that there are a lot of anti-war actors in Hollywood. If we could get the word out to them, ????, perhaps they could get word out to their non-Disney production companies, to raise hell. They all have a lot of incentive in seeing a Disney production fail.
Disney shareholders are pretty active, IIRC correctly from the Eisner soap opera. Can Eisner be enticed to lead some shareholders to exert pressure to pull this? He doesn’t work there anymore. He has the leverage to say that this would seriously stain Disney’s creative reputation.
helina handbasket @ 19
helina, I agree. I don’t however, see much harm in trying. Sometimes losing one battle helps win the next one.
looseheadprop @ 28
Isn’t there a 20th anniversary in November?
This sure smells like a Karl “The Weasel” Rove play.
As a backup plan if the linkage play of Iraq = GWOT “we got to fight ‘em over there” strategy fails, or that other Repug meme Immigration = blame the Dems ’cause now “we got to fight ‘em over here” strategy fails too.
So if those fail, as they are surely doing, the next Repug GOTV theme is blame everybody, anybody else for the shite we’re in?
So Junya is saying: “Why is everybody always pickin’ on me? I didn’t do it. It was all Billy’s fault.”
Yeah, like that is going to sell too.
Thankee, thankee Jennifer and Jane! Let’s go shove this back up their fat white asses!
I think screening the movie is the very first step… who knows what limpbaugh saw that he liked so very much?
strange though that is was released to wingnuts already… but let’s take a look… see what we got so we can make an educated argument…
OT - CNN ‘week at war’ dude just inferred that the Dems point fingers while the GOP provides real solutions
looseheadprop @ 35
I really like the FEC idea. Anybody gotta an email addy for Tom Edsall. He just left the WaPo and he was their FEC expert.
I really really like the idea of
hammeringpolitely requesting that the advertisers reconsider their support.John Casper @ 39
Exactly. Ergo, the reference of “to create enough of an uproar”.
msnbc is reporting that we’ve “caught the #2 al qaeda guy”…
again? how many lives does this guy have?
This film is going to become the sheeple’s “memory” of 9/11. They will internalize its lies, and forget that they first heard them on a partisan, fictional TV show. They will think it is reality.
UptownNYChick @ 5
Yes - when that slanderous piece about Kerry was going to be aired close to the 2004 election, writing to the advertisers and putting pressure on the network and affiliates definitely worked.
Couldn’t we do the same thing here?

siun, saw your response downstairs, I think your link problem is that you have three slashes in it: ///, which is cancelling out the rest of your link.
Great post Jennifer. I agree that this week we can uncover all the sponsors and advertising companies (hopefully) to blanket with complaints. They obviously think that this will just die down after an initial flurry of protests, (ala Wapoo blog-think), it’s time to let them ALL know that this bullshit isn’t going to fly for a long long while whatsoever. Why Bill Clinton has anything to do with the Bushs is beyond me.
Perhaps the focus of the response should be to demand that the “Based on the 9/11 Commission Report” tag be removed and an appropriate disclaimer be substituted.
OldCoastie @ 46
Always the bridesmaid never the bride.
There needs to be concerted Dem pushback on this one ASAP. If there’s one thing the Repubs have got DOWN, it’s how to kill a partisan piece on a major network that they don’t agree with, and we need to take some tactical hints from their playbook for crap like this.

Jennifer, we are blessed to have you. you are a treasure. IMHO, it’s important to get a headstart countering some of the outrageous claims they will make with facts, such as the number of times the Rethug controlled congress voted down funding for going after Al Qaeda et al; the accusations of Wag the Dog from the thundering hordes everytime he tried to bring the subject up; show the Rethugs implicit complicity by not being willing to concede ANYTHING to the Biggus Doggus.

Take that one step further and let advertisers know that we will BOYCOTT any advertiser that supports this crap.
The left leaning Steven Jobs is now the majority stockholder at Disney which owns ABC. Someone like Bill Clinton should pick up the phone and have a frank discussion with him about how a high profile television company like ABC should be showing only projects that reflect proudly on Disney.
I hope no one forgets how easily CBS(I think) folded when they were going to run REAGAN and the conservatives had a very public tantrum about it.
From someone who’s seen it. Sheesh, propaganda in high gear…

Here is an excerpt from a Kos diary on the ABC piece:
KILL THIS BROADCAST. FORCE ABC TO WITHDRAW IT.
And just for the record:
–No, we should NOT ignore Swift Boat style attacks on us. We should be kicking their perpetrators in the groin.
–No, I don’t give a rat’s ass about ABC’s freedom of expression. This isn’t about artistic freedom–it’s about destroying a right wing propaganda program practically written and directed by Karl Rove.
–No, I’m not worried about giving this show greater attention. The right wing killed off CBS’s bio of Reagan because they didn’t like it. The Republicans never worry about attacking what they don’t like–they just do it incessantly.. We should fight in EXACTLY the same way.
We need to BURY ABC under protests. You can send angry e-mails to them here.
Find out the show’s sponsors. Give them both barrels, too.
Write your Democratic Senator of Representative. Let them know how you feel.
We need a FIRESTORM about this, folks. When I’m attacked, I FIGHT BACK. I sure as hell hope you feel the same way.

okay gang … off for a bit to get groceries at the coop - back later
and let’s make a good plan to act on Jennifer’s news!
I remember reading back before the dark ages, when Clinton was president, that Ken Starr had a whole platoon of FBI agents scurrying around the country at the heighth of Starr’s investigation. Does anybody here know where there’s an existing compilation of how many FBI agents worked on Whitewater, when they did the work, and from what assignments (like maybe watching for suspected airplane hijacking cells) they were pulled to look for old legal firm billing invoices, dead Arkansas troopers and blue dresses?

It is time that the elected Democratic leadership makes peace amongst itself and comes out swingin’ startin right now, not next week.
If Hillary Clinton does not go down to Connecticut with Big Dog next week and if Chuck “the Bookkeeper” Schumer doesn’t dump a TON a cash on Lamont and also in the Missouri senate race…then it’s time to blow up the democratic party and hit the streets.

FWIW, Sunday night, ABC’s 9/11 will go to head to head with the brothers, Peyton and Archie Manning, Colts vs Giants on NBC.

ESPN has MLB.
Monday night
ESPN has Monday Night Football, Vikes against Redskins.
Networks have programming I’m not familiar with.
Nowrasteh: The 9/11 report details the Clinton’s administration’s response ‹ or lack of response ‹ to Al Qaeda and how this emboldened Bin Laden to keep attacking American interests. I know we have a lot of Apple, I-Pod users here.
I agree this has to be fought, but some fuckin’ docudrama that blames Clinton for 9/11 is hardly going to turn the tide.
It should be pointed out, loudly and often, that this administration’s apologists are now resorting to fiction to justify their viewpoint.
Beware too much controversy, though. It will make people actually watch the thing out of curiousity. What we need is a competetive, pre-emptive scandal.
OT - is anyone from Manhattan driving up to support Lamont at the Newtown labor day parade? I plan to catch a train up there tomorrow morning, but I would prefer to catch a ride from the city if any other FDL’ers are making the trip. Thanks and look forward to seeing a large turnout at the parade tomorrow.

There’s plenty. We’re aware and making sure friends and family have access to legitimate, informed sources. But there’s more than one front to this blitz. Besides, Armitage is nothing but a red herring to distract from what’s really coming down.
from today’s WaPo:
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove told one associate last week that he believes that the climate has begun to turn in a way that will help Republicans preserve their majorities, and GOP officials will spend the coming weeks trying to boost the president’s approval ratings and frame the contest.
A pivotal moment will come next week, with the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Last Thursday, the president began a series of speeches on terrorism that Republicans hope will focus attention on the one issue that offered them a decisive advantage in 2002 and 2004.
I imagine Karl will be eating a very large popcorn with extra butter as he watches this ABC movie.

The more I read about this program the madder I get, and then I thought well go ahead and get mad and let’s revisit this moment in time all over again. Who in America has the most to lose and the most to gain talking about 9/11. Certainly the Democrats are on a roll, all things considered maybe this isn’t such a bad thing being handed to us. I blame Hoover for Pearl Harbor. Incompetent bastard.
Jennifer – you sound tenacious. Of course there was no ‘targeted right’release. I think you turned the Havarti into Swiss.
How come we never got an Iran/contra docudrama?
I think the ABC piece sounds as if it needs a challenge for “fair time” as party promotion (maybe they need to air Steven Colbert’s Press bit as a counterpoint?). While I’m game for a bit of response, I hardly watch ABC anymore as it is and, don’t hate me for this – but if Bill and Hilary, with all the facts and contacts they do have (granted – Clinton screwed some things up, but if Bush can filet Tenet, Clinton could REALLY filet Tenet) can’t handle this one — the party really is worthless. When Limbaugh can outmaneuver the Clinton combo on something like this with no resonant response, the goose is jerky.
OT - I missed a lot of the posts on OFG’s thread, trying to deal with the computer stuff and do remote log ins. But there was a lot of very good stuff, in particular the summary by scarecrow @ 82 and 105 in that thread. And I agree with BarbaraB that Bush will not feel he needs Congressional approval for Iran, they’ve already covered that territory and Congress has rolled over without a whimper.. Would someone put the pictures of actual carnage up next to Brownbacks “crying blastocyte with a flip hairdo” poster?
A sad analogy to the Bush admin in NC today, as a gang beats to death someone and it looks like they made a mistake. That Bush approach of hatemonger, no rules, no law, no evidence – it’s such a national analogy. Surely there’s a stray OLC opinion that they can rely upon? Heck, maybe GWB has just found his next wave of Federal Appellate court nominees?
Barbara Bodine…
Ms. Bodine’s career was marked by controversy when details of her conflict with the FBI investigation of the Cole bombing came to light. According to a PBS Frontline documentary, Ms. Bodine’s actions — in particular her conflict with FBI agent John P. O’Neill — may have contributed to the intelligence failure that resulted in the 9/11 bombing of the World Trade Center.
She then became Diplomat in Residence at UCSB, until the March 2003 Invasion of Iraq, when she was appointed coordinator for central Iraq in charge of Baghdad.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Bodine
Any serious dramatic production that would give Patricia Heaton a starring role (as the Ambassador to Yemen) has to be a piece of crap. She calls herself “a proud, anti-choice, conservative, enthusiastic Bush and Iraq war supporter”. She told a talk show audience that because of her support for BushCo they could all thank her for the bigger tax refunds. What a …(rhymes with stunt).

*ilson46201 @ 94
for that matter, didnt GOP Teddy Roosevelt accept cherry trees for ‘favors’ rendered to Japan? I thought so!
Just to add another voice to the chorus, “Nothing scares more easily than a billion dollars.” I think the single greatest failure of the Left is the failure to organize boycotts of the producers sponsors of Foxaganda like this, and all the hard-right-leaning bullshit that’s becoming more and more “mainstream”. If the big corporations start getting lots of mail to the effect of: “From now on I’ll drink (watch, drive, shop etc) [your competitor] because I don’t want my money sponsoring lies like this,” there would soon be less money to sponsor right wing bullshit, and hence less of it. Until and unless this kind of outrage costs people money it will continue unabated. It’s a material world out there, and just appealing to people’s ideals or sense of fairness gets your ass handed to you.
So FDL, how about putting up a list of the sponsors, places where we can mail complaints etc?
Wasn’t Pearl Harbor Clinton’s fault too?

Thanks Jennifer & FDL. Your steps to head this story off BEFORE it hits the tv screens thus gobbling up all the air in the room is correct. The Dems have too long let these stories get out and then played defense, it’s about time someone drained the swamp first. Good work.
