[Bill Winter and Jay Fawcett joins us today for discussion in the comments. As always, keep the discussion on topic and polite -- these are guests at FDL, and we'd appreciate it if everyone would give them a good welcome. -- CHS]
Today we’re being joined for a live discussion by two Fighting Dems from Colorado, Bill Winter and Jay Fawcett. And today these two national security experts are fighting two of the most extremist Republicans running for House seats anywhere in the country, the KKK’s favorite candidate Tom Tancredo and James Dobson’s favorite candidate, Doug Lamborn. There aren’t measurement instruments finely tuned enough to find any discernible differences from these two xenophobic fanatics.
Let me start with Bill Winter’s race to unseat Tancredo in CO-06, Denver’s southern suburbs, where Bush got 60% of the vote in 2000 and 2004 and where the Columbine massacre took place in 1999. It’s a district filled with white, upper middle class subdivisions and sprawling suburbs. It’s rich and it’s Republican, although even here national concerns have begun stirring the complacent inhabitants. And some people are even starting to feel embarrassed about being represented by an extremist and racist when they thought they were voting for a mainstream conservative. Tancredo is so extremist that he can barely be called a rubber stamp Republican. Of course when it comes to serving the interests of Big Business he’s a total rubber stamp, but on social issues he’s far to the right of Bush and other right wing Republicans. He once proudly referred to himself as member of Colorado’s "crazies" in the state legislature, today he’s one of only 4 congressmen to vote against the violence against women legislation, one of only 11 to vote to deny aid to Katrina victims, and one of a handful to try to scuttle the renewal of the voting rights act. Like I said, he’s the KKK’s favorite congressloon. Oh, and he has also pledged to completely eliminate public education. Got the picture?
Bill Winter is a 6’3"/230 pound ex-marine who enlisted right out of high school, served for 4 years and then enlisted in the Navy, which helped send him through college. He wound up with a law degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC. He’s not the kind of man who will be intimidated by Republican hot button manufactured issues.
"I’m a patriot and a marine," Bill told me last week, "and I’ve got 10 years of service that says I can disagree with any president I want any time I want to. And you don’t have to be a veteran to exercise that right because the Constitution guarantees it for everyone."
But can he win in such a heavily Republican bastion?
Tancredo has 85% name recognition… but only 44% of his constituents think he should be re-elected. "If the Democratic Party would take Tancredo on, a ham sandwich would beat him," insists Bill. The DCCC isn’t doing that. On the other hand, the grassroots and netroots are firmly behind Bill. He won Russ Fiengold’s PAC endorsement and Mark Warner’s Map Changer, both voted for online. (As a mark of his character I want to point out that when Warner came to Denver to host a fundraiser for Bill as part of his "prize" for winning, he invited fellow Democratic challengers Ed Perlmutter, Angie Paccione and Jay Fawcett to share the spotlight with him and urged everyone to donate to their campaigns. To me that says a lot about the essence of this man.)
I always ask our candidates how they stand on protecting minorities, guaranteeing women’s right to choice, reforming the political system that makes politicians into corporate prostitutes for Big Business and about getting us out of Iraq. Bill had all the right answers. I especially liked his direct answer about Iraq: "Murtha or sooner!"
South and west of Bill’s district, and completely dominated by Colorado Springs, is CO-05, being vacated by conservative Republican Joel Hefley. A bitter and viciously divisive Republican primary vomited up this Lamborn character, who is so extremist that Hefley has refused to endorse him and has been encouraging Republicans to look closed at the Democrat, Jay Fawcett. If they look closely enough CO-05 will have a Democratic congressman in January, although the district is even more Republican than CO-06. Bush took 66% in 2004!
Jay is an extraordinary candidate and yesterday I did a piece on him as part of a series at Taylor Marsh’s blog about why America will be safer if we elect men like Jay and Bill and take back Congress. Rather than repeat Jay’s national security credentials and his proposals for solving some of America’s most pressing problems, I’d like to urge you to read the piece on Taylor’s blog.
Jay’s served at or worked in each of the 5 bases in the district. When he retired– as a Lt. Colonel– from the Air Force in 1998 he had seen 20 years of military service, including as an air liaison office for the Army in Operation Desert Storm. His leadership role in the Air Force and his keen, analytic mind have prepared him– as few legislators are prepared– to ask all the right questions if he should get into Congress and that body decides to fulfill it’s constitutional oversight responsibilities.
He told me that there are 6 over-all topic voters bring up to him all over the district when he’s out campaigning. Healthcare is the first he mentioned, like almost every candidate I’ve spoken to this year. In CO-05, with its heavy concentration of military vets, there is a great feeling of betrayal from Bush and his rubber stamp Congress, which extends beyond healthcare into all matters impacting on the lives of our country’s military veterans. Jay says another issue which comes up as frequently is the deteriorating educational system which Bush has severely undermined with his unfunded mandates. And in Colorado, where Nature is a way of life– and livelihood:
"Environmental issues are not about tree huggers and spotted owls. It’s a multi-billion dollar a year business here," Jay told me, "and the debate between ‘pro-growth’ advocates of sustainable growth is a big local issue. Development and the availability of water is a huge issue in Colorado."
With Tancredo right next door, the immigration issue (their gay marriage 2006 hot button) is big this year.
"Immigration does not equate to invasion. The Bush Regime has fallen down on border security… they’re very aware that they are taking in a great deal of tax money from immigrants that they’ll never have to pay out, although state governments are forced to pay for services."
The last of the 6 issues, though certainly not the least, is terrorism.
"It’s all about intelligence, intelligence, intelligence. It’s not about occupying countries; it’s about finding terrorists and killing them… [Here at home] we should start by implementing the 9/11 Commission recommendations. If my son had a report card like theirs [the Bush Regime's], he’d lose his X-Box."
Something tells me that if Colorado voters are wise and independent enough to send men like Bill Winter and Jay Fawcett to Washington to represent them, Bush will be losing a lot more than his X-Box.
Our pals at PoliticsTV traveled out to Colorado to augment our report on Jay and Bill with some video footage. You can click on each name and get to know our candidates even better. And for more on these races, keep up with Tancredo Watch and SquareState.net.
If you live in Colorado, please consider volunteering for Bill’s campaign and Jay’s campaign and wherever you live, you can help at the Blue America Act Blue Page. In fact, the first 30 people who donate to both Jay and Bill today at the Blue America page will get a 2-disc set of the June Carter Cash’s hits collection, Her Life In Music, which includes several songs with hubby Johnny Cash.

About Firedoglake
Go Blue! Frist!
Welcome, Bill and Jay. Hope our community makes this an excellent adventure for you.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist. But we’re really stoked to have you here.
Howie!
FIREDOGLAKE!
Welcome!
When will we see the great state of
Colorado vote for a dem president?
rwcole @ 5
First this crew of amazing Democrats, (Angie and Ed too!) and the Governor (Go Ritter!), and then onward to 2008.
Hi everybody. Bill and Jay are going to join us in the next few minutes. I added on a paragraph at DWT and it was too late for me to get it up here. It’s about the great CO blogs that are covering this race and about our pals at PoliticsTV who have done some video interviews with Jay and Bill. You can see that stuff at DownWithTyranny later.
Colorade–GO Blue!
Nevada—Go Blue!
New Mexico- Go Blue
Arizona- Go Blue!
Florida– Go Blue!!!!!!
Howie, I’m lookat at DWT for the paragraph and I have not spotted it yet. But if you get it to me and show me where to place it I’ll make the edit.
Howie Klein @ 7
I’m in, Howie. Thanks for all the music you’ve been sending me, and GO JAY AND BILL!
[never mind]
rwcole, any reason you picked those particular states? And left off other states where we should see HUGE Democratic gains this year– like Indiana, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York, for example?
bumble where are you in Colorado?
Then before Bill and Jay get here, please allow me to post this testimonial from a satisfied donor. I’ve been listening to the Winton Marsalis CD from last Saturday’s post since midday Monday. And I know I’m not the only one.
The incentive isn’t the real reason to contribute here – it’s the candidates and what they stand for – but Howie’s fulfillment folks are goooood!
If experience is a guide, your positive reinforcement won’t be long in coming.
Jay and Bill. Why do you want these jobs?
And if you get them, what are the top three thing you want to accomplish first?
How do you feel about investigations?
Howie—Well Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York are already blue- very blue. Indiana- while it may regain partial sanity- seems unlikely to turn blue (votes dem in presidential elections) in our lifetimes.
Howie’s fulfillment operation is pretty much Howie, I think.
I’ll donate but I don’t want those CDs please. Do I have to add a penny to each to indicate no CDs?
robert gordon durst @ 13
Denver, robert. In DeGette’s district, but close enough to Bill Winterland to lend a hand from time to time.
Pachacutec @ 17
Then Howie can trek from here to Catalina sans boat or scuba gear.
So where was he when I was a product manager and needed…oh, never mind. I’m just happy he’s here for us now!
*ilson46201 @ 18
Yes add a penny to indicate no CDs
Thank you–it’s a pleasure to be here. I hope we can make it worth your time!

Thanks for stopping by, Bill– and welcome to Firedoglake
Bill, Jay,
Both of you are in what are considered difficult races by the standard calculus of election year math. I am sure that this has effected your ability to get financial help through the Party’s traditional big money channels.
Do you feel the way they currently make those decisions is the way to go and that you just need to court other sources, or do you feel there are systemic changes that need to be made either at the Party level or in election finance law in general?
rwcole @ 5
Good morning, Ron. I think we will see Colorado vote for a Democrat for President in 2008. This State is really trending blue in a big way and I think we will see the results of that this year. Of course much in any Presidential race depends on the candidate, but look for big changes in Colorado from now on!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
I haven’t seen such a team effort like the one in Colorado among the congressional candidates anywhere else (except maybe Ohio a bit– where Sherrod Brown is helping guide everybody with a weekly conference call). Do you and Jay and Angie and Ed have anyone in office helping you with advice and campaign guidance?
Hi Bill- Do you see a change in the political climate in Colorado? If so- what’s driving it?
Bill Winter @ 22
Always the gentleman, Bill.
When’s the next opportunity to wow another crowd of Republicans? Can’t wait for the report!
“While you have your cards out…”
Don’t forget to throw some money at the Blue America PAC fund. Your donation will go directly to help get progressive candidates’ radio commercials on the air in several critical races. (Using that oh-so-catchy-tune, “Have You Had Enough?”)
Good morning, Colorado Democratic Challengers!
My question for both of you gentlemen is this: What do you hear from voters when you campaign? What issues do they bring to you? Are you finding their concerns align with your issues?
Thanks for taking on these challenging races — I will check back with you after I make a donation to both your campaigns. You are American patriots and I thank you for your service to your country.

Had Enough, Colorado?

Oilfieldguy @ 15
Let me be absolutely honest about this–I never in my life considered running for office. I don’t have a yearning desire to be a United State Congressman. But I’ve spent my life finding ways to make a difference, from all my years coaching high school kids, to leaving a law firm to teach, to donating a kidney to my sister in law.
I want to make a difference. I want to make peoples’ lives better. Some very good friends convinced me I could do that on a much larger scale in Congress, and give people hope and reunite America in the process. I’m running for Congress to continue my service to my Country and to my community.
Let’s see, top three things? Well, the absolute first thing I want to do is work with whoever I have to work with to overhaul No Child Left Behind and REALLY reform education in America, so that our kids CONTINUE to be the best educated in the world.
The next thing I want to do is work with both sides of the aisle to find a way to provide universal health care–I mean absolute and complete health care coverage to every man, woman, and child in America, and at a substantial savings over the way we do it now. It’s a moral imperative.
And third, I want to stand up with John Murtha, one Marine supporting another, to get a new plan for Iraq, one that stops the senseless killing of our troops to no good end. We’ve been at this for three and a half years and we are no closer to a solution than we were at the start. Enough is enough. And don’t come me to me with pathetic slogans like cut and run when I come to you with a dead man’s dog tags. Give me solutions or get the hell out of the way!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Wow Mr Winter! good priorities! We’re lucky to have you running!
I like that,Bill. Dems need a spine. Never explain, never defend, always attack. That is our mantra at fdl. I wish it wasn’t so, but being called appeasers and morally and intellectually confused is the field we find ourselves on.
TakeBackTheHouse @ 24
Are you trying to get me in trouble, Aaron? Okay, here goes…
I believe that the way our Party decides which races to target is a disgrace. Republicans choose targets based on where they want to win–Tom Daschle, anyone?–and then go invest the resources to get it done. We pick races based on whether we SHOULD win. In other words, if you are in a race where voter registration favors you, the National Party will support you.
That’s pitiful. What we stand for as a Party is good, it’s honest, and Americans agree with it. Let’s go FIGHT FOR IT dammit! Don’t ask me to run then pat me on the head and throw me under the bus when I do. You know what? I never even got a handbook or any training or even any advice from our Party, much less any financial help.
That being said, we are going to win anyway. I came up in the Marine Corps and the Navy. The Democratic Party may run scared by nature, but I don’t. We are doing GREAT in our race. We will win, but if we had the resources they will get in other races, we would beat Mr. Tancredo by ten points or more and really send a lot of powerful messages to America.
I believe we need serious changes in how we go after races as a Party. I think we should go support dynamic candidates and the hell with the voter registration! I can win this race, and no flunky in Washington, D.C. whose only information is voter databases, and who hasn’t been here is going to tell me differently!
But more importantly, we need absolute overhaul of campaign finance. We need completely publicly funded elections where everyone gets the same amount of money, where you can’t spend your own money if you are rich, and frankly, where we REQUIRE the television and radio networks to provide time to Governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House Candidates FREE OF CHARGE! The airwaves they use belong to the taxpayers. Let’s get back control of them!
And I would love to end gerrymandering to and make every district competitive, but I won’t hold my breath.
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Howie Klein @ 26
I’m not sure what you mean, to be honest. We have a campaign manager and staff like everyone else. We don’t have anyone from the Party or whose job it is to work with the other campaigns. We get advice and guidance from a variety of sources.
I am a team player all the way, both horizontally–meaning with all our Congressional candidates–and vertically–meaning with our State Candidates, from Bill Ritter for Governor all the way down to county offices.
Look, I have no control over what any other candidate does, but I will show the leadership to work hard to get us all to work together. We need to show unity and strength, and I’m going to help make that happen!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Bill Winter,
Thanks for running! Why is it that the affluent district you hope to represent is so GOP-oriented? Have the Republicans there been able to control the issues in campaigns, or has it just been a lack of credible challengers?
Looks like Col. Murtha’s got a standup jarhead coming to watch his back.
Bill Winter you rawk!! I’m emailing all my friend in CO to support and vote for YOU!!
Bill Winter @
34
THANK YOU! It’s about damned time someone started saying this! The deregulation and subsequent takeover of the public airwaves by corporations is killing our Democracy. We cannot survive without an informed public. Corporate Greed kills TRUTH.
After Bill’s great analysis of the need to FIGHT for our candidates, I’m clicking on the Blue America page now – not a lot but boy is it a pleasure to support a Dem who gets in there and fights for victory!
rwcole @ 27
I do see a significant change and I think what is driving it is a desire from the voters for government that is responsive to their needs, that is effective, and that gets things done.
I think people are very frustrated with fringe issues, with being divided by fear and hate, and with government at all levels not getting the job done.
I think several things drive that. The Iraq War is an absolute fiasco. We’ve invested almost 400 BILLION dollars, and thousands of lives, and we have nothing to show for it except the arrogance and incompetence of Don Rumsfeld. Here in Colorado we had a serious budget crisis, and all the republican governor and legislature would give us was the ten commandments in every building, and prayer in schools and public events, and gay bashing, and any number of other fringe issues that had no relevance to the real lives of real people.
But what really ripped off the scab, what really pulled back the curtain and exposed the little bald fat man at the controls was Katrina. I think Americans were absolutely appalled to find out our government was less prepared than a third world country to deal with our needs in an emergency.
I think people realized we NEED good government, and I think the people of Colorado have figured out that it’s Democrats that deliver good government!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
“Are you trying to get me into trouble, Aaron?”
Sometimes I ask people tough questions to get them into trouble. Sometimes I ask a candidate to learn where they stand. With you Bill, I ask questions to see what the answer should be. You never fail to inspire me, and often suprise me by seeing a picture larger than one that I had seen when I asked.
By the way, thanks for being so incredibly available and responsive to the local Netroots. Even when our questions might lead you into biting the hand that should be feeding you, you have been forthright with your answers. You make me proud to be on your team.
Thanks for the coverage of these guys! Winter has really been making progress out here and I really think with some national attention to his race he can pull it off. Colorado Springs has so many crazies that even a close race will be a huge victory. However, if Hefley gets back in the race, that would siphon enough votes to insure a Fawcett win.
Thanks again and keep an eye on us out here.
–happy in Denver
bumblebums @ 28
I’m just the candidate you know–I’m not privy to the schedule until I need to know. LOL
In all seriousness, we are always looking for ways to reach out to ALL the people of our district, which is exactly the opposite of Mr. Tancredo. We are having tremendous success talking to Republicans, and so is Bill Ritter. It’s going to be a great year!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Bill @ 34, that doesn’t get you in trouble with me, it’s exactly the point! The Democratic party got to the sorry straights it is thought triangulation, republican lite-ism, and other forms of weaselry.
I like your answer!
(P.S. To the mods, I’m finding refresh, etc. runnning very slowly, or sometimes not at all.)
What’s the current hispanic percentage of registered voters in Colorado? How is that likely to change in the next ten years?
Best of luck Bill and Jay when he gets here.
I just hit the tip jar
Mr. Winter and Mr. Fawcett,
Thanks much for taking the time to visit. a question for you both and one specifically for Mr. Fawcett.
1) I recall in the spring a truly inspiring Take The Hill campaign organized by all the veterans (more than 3 dozen, I think) running for Congress as Democrats.
Since then, though, I have heard nothing about this campaign. I was wondering what happened, whether the national party had taken action on those candidates in some unified way, or whether there was more of a sense of individual candidates running individual campaigns. If the Democrats have left you all to fend for yourselves, I think they’re missing a bet. A unified approach would lift all your prospects.
2) Mr. Fawcett, in the past couple of years the news out of the Air Force Academy has been one shocking story after another. there were the scandals about rapes of female cadets, and the institutional inclination to discredit those cadets (and cover for the accused). Even more troubling to me were the stories about how the academy has become hostile to cadets and others there who are not evangelical Christians. How long has that been going on? What do you attribute it to? And what can a Congressman do to help restore the academy to a standing more representative of this nation’s best impulses?
Again, many thanks for taking the time, and best wishes for your successes in November.
dmg
TeddySanFran @ 29
Thank you, Teddy. It’s an honor to serve.
We did extensive polling back in May and we asked about a variety of issues. The results we got back showed that the people of the district do agree with me on the issues. The only question is will we be able to let them know that they do on our admittedly very limited budget. As I said before, if we had the money they will have in other races in this State, we could beat Tancredo by ten points or more.
But I’m hearing about the same issues everyone else reports. The top five or so are health care, education, water, immigration, and Iraq War/national security.
We are also hearing about a growing sense of unease and disatisfaction with the direction our Country is going. In many cases it’s outright anger, and as much from Republicans as from Democrats, and certainly from Unaffiliated voters too.
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
republican candidates in many western states are running strongly on the illegal immigration issue. How is that affecting your races?
Oilfieldguy @ 33
Well I’ll tell you this–I defy Mr. Rumsfeld or anyone else to make those comments to my face!
They won’t, of course, because at heart they are bullies and cowards and they won’t ever stand up to anyone who will stand up to them.
Which is why Mr. Tancredo so far refuses to debate me. It’s all well and good to spout off when surrounded by supporters, but he knows good and well that in a debate with me he’s going to get beat badly!
So let’s fight-let’s fight for what we believe in and not cower in a corner and say “Please don’t hurt me.” I want to take the fight to them and put America back on track!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
I was wondering when the Fawcett Campaign was going start to get Jay’s name out to the independent and moderate republicans here in CD-5, its only 67 days till election night?
Go Bill Winter!!!
Go Jay Fawcett!!!
I’ve heard Bill speak many times, and I can assure you he is the real deal — passionate, progressive, articulate, and not afraid of a fight. Bill Winter is EXACTLY the kind of Democrat we need to elect.
I heard Jay Fawcett speak at the Mark Warner rally, and he is a great candidate, too — he understands the issues, and the opportunity created by the wing nut takeover of the El Paso County GOP.
A question for Bill —
Last night, I was thinking about irrational Republicans — people who are otherwise thoughtful and responsible citizens, but who would vote for Attila the Hun if he ran as a Republican.
These are not the hard core right wingers, but dependable GOP voters in spite of the evidence of malfeasance, incompetence, and betrayal by Republican Politicians.
The South Metro area is full of voters who are rational citizens, but irrational Republicans. What issues and strategies are you using to get these people to vote for Bill Winter, instead of Tom Tancredo?
How is the ground game going in Colorado? Do you have enough people turning out to help – and are there ways we can help from outside the district?
Bill, as far as getting on the air without much money, maybe you could adapt the “Had Enough” video for your campaign?
Here’s a Coleen Rowley’s version.
Ed*ard Teller @ 36
Mostly it’s been the complete abdication of the Democratic Party down here. There’s no support for our candidates at any level, so no matter how good or strong they may be, they can’t get their message out. They can’t let the voters know who they are.
When our candidates have the resources, they do well here. Ken Salazar split the vote with Pete Coors in this District in 2004, when Bush got 61% of the vote here. He had the resources to get his message out.
Bill Ritter, our Democratic Governor candidate, is running TEN POINTS AHEAD in this Congressional District alone right now!!! He has the resources to get his message out.
Look, I’ve said it twice, I’ll say it again–give me the same resources and I’ll beat Tancredo by ten points or more. His support is very weak here. But inevitably on election day people go to the polls here and they haven’t heard of our Democrat candidate so they just vote the party line.
We are going to change that, so donate today and help us do it!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Mr. Winter – first, I just want to mention that I believe you to be man of practically immeasurable integrity.
My question is that given that you are looking for ways to spread your message, have you explored ways of motivating folks of all political persuasions who generally don’t take much interest in politics? I think one good idea is finding local musical talent for a multi-act event to support, promote, and fundraise for you. Does this type of thing make sense?
I think your message would resonate with the vast majority of those in your district. But many folks don’t actively participate in politics or seek out candidates’ messages.
Bill Winter @ 40
As a resident of New Orleans, I’m very pleased to see that. What many people in the country don’t realize is that we can rebuild, but we can’t rebuild the INFRASTRUCTURE. That takes government. I’ll take care of my own house, thanks. I was away from here for nine months, because there was no place for my children and grandchildren to go to school, because of debris blocking the streets and cluttering neighborhoods, because of concerns about supplies and suppliers not coming back. Please let your REPUBLICAN voters know that we’re working our hearts out down here, but every way we turn, we get stymied by government, who is paying big bucks to no-bid contractors who are not doing their job.
Afternoon Firedogs! sorry to break into a great post but:
Call your Reps and support HR 503 (the vote is in the House on September 7th) to end Wild Horse Slaughter so wild mustangs and burros are NOT taken off the range by BLM to end up in slaughter houses and on Japanese tables for dinner. Foil Conrad “Horse Killer” Burns and the Cattle Industry and join The Rally for the Horses on the Capitol Lawn at 10 AM at the Cannon Platform on September 5th (Willy Nelson plus many others)
Don’t let the wild Mustang end up like the Buffalo!
Mr. Winter
and
Mr. Fawcett
Just want to add my thanks with my donations to your fighting spirits. Sorry if already mentioned but where are you both in the polls?
If we vote for these two candidates, how can we be sure that we’re not going to be voting for another Ken Salazar. And what I mean by that is, Senator Salazar voted for turture (Gonzales appointment to AG), he voted for National Security failure (Rice appointment to Security of State), and voted for Big Business (Bankruptcy Law). He is not a democrat, he is a moderate Republican. Are you two Salazar democrats?
Bill- Loved your “good government” answer. It’s true- americans want govt. that works. They want regulators who actually REGULATE- for example- and don’t just look the other way in return for campaign contributions. We want govt’ that GOVERNS. Best of luck!
rwcole @ 45
Well, the percentage of hispanic people in the population at large is around 20%, I think, but the percentage that is registered to vote is much smaller. I think that’s going to change as more and more Latinos register and begin to take part in our Democracy. I think they are angry right now–and probably rightfully so–at being made the scapegoats for all the problems in America.
We can all agree that illegal immigration needs to be stopped. But why is anyone with brown skin and a hispanic last name automatically suspect? Did you all know that minorities, and particularly hispanics, are represented in the military in a much larger percentage than in society in general?
They love their Country. They fight for it. And right now this immigration hysteria paints them as the worst thing that ever happened to America.
Would you rise up and fight back? I damn sure would!
Bill Winter

Bill, Jay, thanks so much for being here today and having so much clarity about this situation. Bill if anybody takes away anything from this chat today I hope it is this quote — you guys deserve our support because you are great candidates and we believe in what you believe in. Until we start getting behind people who share our values and our vision, nothing is going to get any better. This playing the margins business is crap.
Again, thanks so much. You guys are awesome.
dmg @ 47
With regard to the “Fighting Dems” phenomenon, I think it lost steam and momentum as the individual campaigns all got caught up in their own races. This takes an incredible amount of time and energy. I know I don’t have enought to do anything to organize the other Vets. It was all I could do to make sure our event with Mark Warner included all of our Colorado Candidates.
And there was absolutely no support for us from the National Party at all that I am aware of.
To be honest, I think we make them nervous. I have ten years in the Military. Jay has more than 20 I think. I’m not coming to Washington to be told what to do and I’m certainly not going to be intimidated by anyone once I get there.
I think some folks worry about being able to control us. Let me end all speculation–you can’t, so don’t try. We are going to stand for what we believe in.
But I do agree that the Democratic Party really missed an opportunity when it decided to ignore the fact that so many veterans are running as Dems this year.

ANY Colorado Democrat is 100 times better than a Republican, and that includes Ken Salazar.
While Senator Salazar has disappointed many netroots activists, the people of Colorado got what they voted for. While we are trending blue, it was doubtful that Pat Schroeder could ever have won a state wide race.
If things had gone as expected, Ken Salazar would be running for Governor, and Ben Campbell would still be our Senator. And no matter what, Ken Salazar is 1,000 times better than Pete Coors would have been.
Mr. Winter & Mr. Fawcett,
The U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland revealed this week that of the estimated 100,000 unexploded cluster bombs lying in Lebanon almost all of them were fired in the last few days of the fighting when the terms of the ceasefire had already been set. Since the ceasefire, 13 Lebanese children have been killed by unexploded cluster bombs and another 46 injured.
Should the US do now what we did in the early ’80s when Ronald Reagan stopped supplying Israel with cluster bombs, or should we keep shipping them more, as Bush is? Also, should we pressure the Israelis to allow oil spill cleanup boats access to the Lebanese shore to clean up the worst environmental catastrophe in the history of the eastern Mediterranean?
rwcole @ 49
Curiously enough it seems to be hurting my opponent, Tom Tancredo. Most Americans seem to be coming down in support of the Senate bill from John McCain and President Bush’s overall view of comprehensive immigration reform. Tancredo and his cabal are increasingly seen as the ones PREVENTING immigration reform at this point.
People in Colorado are also, as far as I can tell, beginning to tire of the issue as the media, in it’s usual fashion, absolutely beats it into the ground. Many people used to say “No one is talking about immigration.” Well everyone’s talking about it now.
And here in Colorado, there seems to be a perception that our Democratic State Legislature actually DID something about immigration, so let’s move on to all the other issues facing us, like health care and education and Iraq.
I’m not sure how it will effect things in November, but it appears to be playing out in some unexpected and very interesting ways.

That makes me sick, I actually rather of had a republican, atleast we know what were going to get with republicans. They stand for torture, destruction of the Bill of Rights, racisism, bigotry and hate. When we vote for a democrat we should hope they vote against these republican values, and Salazar has proven not to be a true democrat. Are these men going to follow Salazar?
Bill, Great answers- thanks. How heavy is the LDS presence in Colorado? The three states that give Bush the highest approval ratings are Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho- the three states with the highest LDS population. I would imagine that there is fairly heavy LDS registration in Arizona and Colorado as well. True?
Wooooo! Mr. Winter – If you aren’t just the coolest breath of fresh air in a long time, I don’t know what is!
You are quite the inspiration, and I just left a little something in your tip jar at Blue America.
I encourage everyone here to do the same, ’cause you only have to read what the man stands for to know it is the right thing to do!
Remember, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!”
Mr. Winter,
I do appreciate your feedback and candor. Democrats, it seems, never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
Meanwhile, I have really enjoyed your other responses. Here’s hoping you kick butt and take names out there. Starting with Tancredi.

This is what’s wrong with the Democratic party, we rather have any democrat then someone who actually believes in something and takes a stand. I know we’re not Connecticut here, but we must hold these democrats to higher standards. I can’t wait for the Democratic National Convention in 2008. I hope Denver does get it. I say all democrats should go and make this convention look like the 1968 Democratic National Convention. We must tell the Dems that were not happy.
I can’t find poll results for the two fighting Dems here, but I found this for Colorado, showing trend lines for the governor’s race, with the D gap over the R widening slightly over time: http://www.pollster.com/polls/…..ernor_race
I cannot say enough about the value of Pollster.com to look at various races and see where the momentum is.
But of course, momentum only carries you so far. It’s still necessary to stoke up with fuel or even momentum can dissipate.
Still, looking at poll trend lines graphically can give that infusion of spirit that carries us forward.
What do the poll trend lines show in the Congressional races you two are trying to win?
Are these men going to follow Salazar?
No — they will be true to themselves, and the voters of Colorado. Bill Winter and Jay Fawcett are progressive Democrats, and will do us proud in Washington. Will they endorse Ken Salazar? Yes, of course they will. Will they agree with every position of Senator Salazar? Of course not — they will go to Washington to represent US, not to be a Rubberstamp for anyone.
-ck- @ 52
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I really appreciate it!
Let me start by saying that it doesn’t matter what issues I use if I don’t have the ability to reach the voters in mass quantities. We need to touch 200 to 300,000 voters, which means direct mail, radio, and hopefully television. That means money and lots of it. So we need to raise money. Hate to go back there, but message is irrellevant without a way to share it with all the voters.
As to the voters here in the District, our polling was VERY encouraging. Tancredo had 85% name recognition, which is very high for a Congressman, but he only had about 45 to 47% actual support, and he had 40% who didn’t like him. That’s amazingly weak support and strong negatives for an 8 year incumbent.
The problem is that the Democrat candidate never gets their message out to enough people, so voters on election day often have never heard of the Democrat. That’s our challenge!
As for the issues, we have a real advantage in this district. It’s called Tom Tancredo.
If you have heard Tom talk about ANY issue besides immigration, I’d like to know about it!
People in this District are deeply affected by MANY issues, and they want those issues addressed! And curiously enough, the majority of Republicans in this District don’t seem to agree with Tancredo on how to solve immigration.
We are letting people know that I served my Country in the military, that I worked for John McCain, and that I have ideas for how to address all our issues. They are really responding!
Don’t forget that this voters here voted for Ken Salazar and Bill Ritter is by ten points here. When a Democrat has the resources to get his message out here, voters will vote Democratic!
Do I sound like a broken record yet?
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
IraqWarVeteran, lots of people agree with you– and some people of good conscience have a different point of view. You asked Mr Winter, loudly, and I’d like to ask you to please give him a chance to answer without going off into some needless tirades. Believe it or not, my guess is that your argument is probably supported by most people here.
Siun @ 53
I think the ground game is really picking up steam, both in our campaign, the Ritter campaign, and in other organizations here in Colorado.
We have got some great people on board and we are about to get another one. Senator Feingold’s PAC is sending trained, paid staffers to run field operations in 20 campaigns around the Country. We have been chosen as one of those 20 and on September 10th we will be getting a full time staff member whose salary is paid by the Progressive Patriots Fund.
Let me tell you, I’m pretty excited about that. Thank you, Senator Feingold!
As for how you can help from out of state, one way is to donate, and donate often. Another way is to get others to donate from anywhere and everywhere. And if you know folks in Colorado, contact them and ask them to get involved. Call your members of Congress and ask them to send us money and support us.
Use your imagination. There are lots of ways to help!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Edwin @ 56
You have hit on the one thing I would most like to do with this campaign–find ways to reach out to those who don’t participate!
Imagine if we could reach out to that almost 50% of Americans who don’t vote, find a way to inspire them, and get even 10% of them to vote this time?
We would win in landslides!
So I love ideas for how to reach out in new and unprecedented ways!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
Bill – I’ll be on the phone here on Tuesday to ask my reps to support you!
And Bravo to Feingold’s team for getting behind your campaign – what a great contribution!
Thanks for the talk Bill- sent you a little ammo. Good luck- what do you need to be competitive? A million?
somebody please close the bold. I tried, but I don’t know if it worked.
Lotsa bold talk in here.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 59
I honestly don’t know at this point but can speculate.
Our most recent polling was in May and it was fantastic. When given a head to head matchup and information about both of us, I was head 47% to 45%, which was within the margin of error.
In that poll our Democratic Governor candidate, Bill Ritter, was dead even in our District with Bob Beauprez, the Republican.
In Bill’s latest polling, released last week I believe, he is up by TEN POINTS over Beauprez in our District!
We haven’t polled since May, so I don’t know where we are now. Is it fair to extrapolate from Bill Ritter’s results that we are also pulling ahead?
Darned if I know, but I like it as a theory!
Bottom line from our polling is this–if we ge our message out and Tancredo gets his message out, WE WIN!
So help us get the resources to get our message out!
Bill Winter
http://winterforcongress.com/
There are supposedly millions of voters who would vote dem but they are “alienated” from the political process and won’t vote- Ralph Nader tells us so. Guess Bush was reading the “Stranger” to figure out how to either get to em- or put em back to sleep.
If they exist- no one seems to have woken them from their dogmatic slumbers yet. They may be mythical.
Wow, is the boldface a “new feature”? Love it! Much easier to read!
(Yeah, I know it’s an open tag somewhere.)
rwcole, Bill’s in the most statistically “Republican district” in Colorado, and one of the most Republican districts in America. But he can probably pull this off with less than a million dollars. Tancredo is so busy pushing his racist, xenophobic agenda around the country that he hasn’t even been campaigning in Colorado. If Bill can get his name and message out effectively, Tancredo could be in for a big surprise in November. As we’re all seeing, Bill has a great deal of appeal, regardless of party affiliation.
I just sprayed some “bold-be-gone,” you might try f5 rather than refresh comments to see its effect….
Is it all about money or is it votes that mean more? After John Kerry lost the election in 2004, we found out that he had donated money left over. Both of you threw your names into your perspective races a long time ago, why haven’t you gone out and visited the voter, why haven’t you walked your districts yet? Senator Wellstone proved it to work and he had an entire state to visit, you all have just a district.
IraqWarVeteran @ 60
I’m a Proud Progressive American.
I will stand up for an end to the Iraq War in a way that makes us all safer.
I will stand up for a woman’s right to choose but will also work on the things that lower abortion rates, like poverty, health care, education, etc.
I will ALWAYS vote against torture.
I will support labor and working Americans.
I will work to overturn the absolutely unconscionable Bankruptcy Act passed last year so that regular Americans don’t continue to get crushed by big business and huge banks.
I will work my tail off for quality affordable health care for every man, woman and child in America.
Senator Salazar has been a great support to me in this campaign and I am truly grateful to him for that.
But I’m my own man and will vote my conscience at all times.
And on that note, I’m afraid I have to go. It’s been a real pleasure to be here with all of you but I have to go to a campaign event.
I deeply appreciate your support and I am humbled and honored by all of you. It will be my greatest honor to serve all of you in Congress!
Thank you very much!

Bill, your voice is a breath of fresh mountain air. So glad you could join us. We’re behind you!
Thank you Bill Winter! You’re making us all proud! and energized for victories in November!
I can’t wait to see you sworn in!

Thanks Bill. That’s a great answer. After speaking to you and reading what you’ve had to say at other blogs, I had no doubt that you would always be independent-minded. That’s why I’m proud to have added you to our Blue America page.
Okay, I hit the tip jar. Just remember, I’m not big oil, just a little oil can to help with the squeaks.
Thanks for dropping in, Bill. I hope you can take Tom Tancredo down.
Meanwhile, firepups, when y’all get back around to thinking about HolyJoe, note that he will have his own new BLOG starting on Tuesday.

Be nice.
Did Mr. Fawcett even show up to this thing?
I think the biggest problem for Democrats is that the National Party has allowed the GOP to trash Brand Democrat, by spreading the lies that Democrats are weak and out of touch.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The Republican Party is a dismal swamp of deceit, hypocrisy, and corruption — Republican politicians betray Average Americans at every turn.
The challenge is to get Irrational Republicans to see that the GOP doesn’t represent them. The good news is, the more incompetence they see from Tom Tancredo, Both Ways Bob, and George Bush, the more they open up to fighting Democrats like Bill Winter and Jay Fawcett!!!
Holy Pikes Peak, that is fantastic news! I always donate to Progressive Patriots and Blue America when shopping with Howie. Go Russ!
I can never listen to Tom Tancredo when he’s on TV. I just give thanks to whoever invented the mute button. Really, all he ever does is yell “Get off my lawn” at anyone with brown skin. I would think an enterprising blogger might come up with a pretty funny YouTube-able video of Coloradans looking into the camera and asking Tancredo questions about a variety of concerns, none of them immigration, and Tancredo “responding” to each question with one of his sound bite anti-immigration rants. He is his own Kiss float.
“He is his own Kiss float” — that’s rich, BB!
Mr. Winter – thanks for your response. It is truly an honor to have you correspond with us.
I’m very glad to hear that you see value in reaching out to the disinterested. How could someone locally help with things like setting up events like I mentioned in my previous comment. Would someone like a volunteer coordinator be interested in talking to local musicians who support your campaign?
I have been involved with several fundraisers/benefits involving local talent. Often, the participants at these events come for the music but find themselves doing more than they had planned for whatever the cause. Response is always very good and there are many ways at these events to generate much needed funds. For example, you can have auctions with both private and local business donors.
Thanks, Howie, gotta run too, but these Saturdays sure are fun!

Edwin @ 102
Edwin, I think your idea sounds great and I would be willing to help out with rounding up some of my friends in the local music scene.
Bill has a young, smart, volunteer coordinator named Logan who just joined his campaign from L.A., she looks to me like someone who would resonate with this idea but might be able to use some help identifying the right scenesters to bring onto the project.
Her email is a simple one: volunteer@winterforcongress.com
You should drop her a line.
Last election cycle, a group of wealthy Democrats ran ads mocking Marylin Musgrave, showing a pink suit look alike stealing from soldiers and the elderly. They only spent $500k, but the RNCC dumped $5 million to save Musgrave’s race.
It would be great if they would do the same with Tancredo — something that riduculed his hypocrisy on immigration.
If Tom Tancredo had come over on the Mayflower, he would have turned around and shoved everyone else back on board, as soon as he reached the bottom of the gang plank.
The good news: the GOP Establishment won’t come to Tancredo’s rescue — they are as sick of him as we are.
TakeBackTheHouse @ 104
Bill, I really appreciate you coming by and answering all our questions. I’m sorry Jay didn’t make it but I have an idea. Traffic is very slow today because of the 3-day weekend so I’ll see if we can re-schedule Jay and do this again so that we can raise you both some more campaign funds. Having someone like you in Congress would be good for Colorado and good for the whole country. I think I speak for everyone here when I say it would be a tremendous honor for us to play a small part in sending you to Congress.

LOL
Howie, thank you again for all you do. And Edwin and TakeBacktheHouse, Howie’s Blue America PAC will have great 30 second musical radio spots personalized for Winter and Fawcett (at least I hope he will) but the PAC cannot coordinate directly with the campaigns. You two probably know a lot about the local radio stations and could give him some advice on the best places to run them.
NotOilfielguy @ 110
You are SO right, Notoilfieldguy. Oilfieldguy is a veritable Renaissance Man, just like ifthethunderdontgetya!
P.S. Benefit for Mr. Siegel
It turns out that 30 second spots are not a great idea. We also have 60 second spots and they are MUCH better. In a small town 30 second spot might cost $11 and a 60-second only $13.50.
Mr. Winter, I think you would make a great member of Congress. I have two questions for you or firedogs who know.
Where is Tancredo’s (financial) support coming from? Has his divisiveness managed to alienate the RNC or are national Republicans supporting him (eg as they support Musgrave)?
Is there any possibility of Dem party money (re comment 34) in the next few weeks (as your candidacy strengthens), or has all their big money been apportioned elsewhere?
great honor indeed guys, good luck, we have tons of work to do
I want to start pointing out a GREAT point and how the democrats MUST address the Iraq issue
the military was tasked to overthrow Saddam, they completed their mission with stellar efficiency.
THEIR MISSION IS COMPLETE and there’s NOTHING left for the armed forces to do in Iraq
THAT’S the point we have to make CLEAR, we are NOT asking the military to leave before the job is done, THEIR JOB IS DONE
, they are NOT politicians, they are NOT and occupying force, they are NOT the Iraqi police, they are NOT a peace keeping force
they are the armed forces of the United States of America, they are the national guard, they are NOT a force for the pleasure of the president.
they completed their mission, they need to be rewarded and brought home.
if the president wants an occupying force in Iraq, he needs to constrict one, if he wants a political arm in Iraq, he needs to train them, if he wants an Iraqi police force, he needs to hire them
he needs to STOP using our national defense for his personal foreign policy
good luck guys
Is that a proposition?
Oilfielguy @ 117
an adjective, I think …
Cassidy (#115) Tancredo is endorsed by the KKK and he is getting money not just from the standard Republican sources like Big Business, but also from all the hate groups, the kinds supported by “readers” of Ann Coulter books.
As for the DCCC coming in to help Bill… well, I think the tooth fairy is more likely to help than Rahm Emanuel. Funding this race is up to grassroots Democrats like us.
Oh. I thought it was a verb.
Howie Klein @ 119
Good thing I don’t donate to the DCCC or the DSCC.

I’ve never donated to the DSCC or DCCC either — it’s just not cost-effective. Why fund them to make choices? Seed money for grassroots campaigns like Jay & Bill is just a better use of out hard earned dollars.

Did somebody already point out that Lieberman rolled out a new press secretary yesterday?
Asked to comment on the “anti-Democratic” charges against Lieberman, the campaign’s new press secretary, Tammy Sun, responded:
“Supporters of the Nedster may be focused on political gamesmanship and party politics, but Joe Lieberman is more concerned about what is best for the people of Connecticut. He believes they deserve better, which is why he’s running as an Independent Democrat on a message of unity and purpose.”

We are looking forward to the People for the American Way dinner. I want to use it as a chance to celebrate what our country has historically stood for, the values that made us the envy of the world. That should serve as a contrast to what this administration has done.
AMBASSADOR Wilson? Here?
Hi :) We think you guys are great.
Welcome, Jay Fawcett!!!
Yes, many of are still here — ready for part two of the Blue America thread.
Jay, are you working with Margerite Therize? (not sure that is the correct spelling) I met her at the 2001 JJ Dinner; she maintains her own voter database for El Paso county, and uses it very successfully.
Are you specifically targeting thoughtful Republicans, who are turned off by the wing nut take over of their party?
Joe Wilson @ 162
Green Day are getting the Spirit of Liberty award. Wait ’til you meet them! They are really exceptional guys– very in touch with the populist spirit.
Hi Jay — In addition to Teddy’s questions, I wonder whether you could tell us how your military experience is resonating in your district, and whether your opponent is really as crazy as we have heard. Will the Republicans manage to unite behind him? Oh, and there’s a question upthread from someone who is concerned about sexual harassment and evangelical proseletyzing at the Air Force Academy, if you’d care to address that topic.
Jay,
I sit on the advisory committee of Mikey Weinstein’s Military Religious Freedom Foundation dedicated to combatting the evangelical proseletyzing in the military. We are doing a fundraiser next weekend in Albequerque and will be strategizing. All ideas are welcome.
Jay, you will find many questions upthread. One I like to ask candidates is why do you want this job?
I hope all candidates are doing routine oppo research — I ran a criminal history check last week on a GOP candidate and found two arrests for battery with injury in connection with domestic violence. Not a nice guy. Charges were eventually dismissed but he had a restraining order on him for a while …not cool on a political resume…
Nice to meet you Joe!

Mr. Fawcett,
Glad you could join us.
With so many Republican candidates competing in your district, and clear dissatisfaction with the outcome, is there still a possibility that a Republican will pull a Lieberman in CO-05? Apparently, Congressman Hefley has decided against such a move, but is there anyone else disaffected Republicans might coalesce around?
Have you noticed a difference in support (financial or otherwise) subsequent to the Republican primary?
I have seen a few articles in Colorado Media Matters

that indicated the local media were not giving your candidacy a fair hearing before the primary. Have you noticed a change in media bias since then?

When we saw the wapo editorial we did what any couple who believes in reality based reporting and editorial writing should do: we cancelled our subscription.
A Congressman friend called me this morning from his district to tell me he just subscribed to the Post so he too could have the satisfaction of cancelling it.
Hello Parachutec. Good to see you, Swopa, and other buddies on here. On to victory in November.

I think there are still good people at the WaPo, for instance Walter Pincus. And on the other hand, Fred Hiatt.
Do you think letters to the editor help, or is it (the Post) just a lost cause that should be shunned?
Letters to the editor count for a lot as do the reactions from the blogosphere. While they like to feign the courage of their convictions (however wrong they might be on both the convictions and on the facts) they are really insecure and don’t take criticism at all well. In the end they are a bunch of woosses.

We are grateful for the courage of YOUR convictions. Thank you so much.
I’m flipping back and forth between the two posts. And Jay, I hit your tip jar, just a little, hopefully I can do better in the future.
Bill Winter, do you mean that the private schools will be out? (Our grand-daughter is a second grade school teacher in a PUBLIC SCHOOL.) What about all those POOR health insurance companies? (poor, ha do you really intend to cut them out?) Regarding the dogs of the dead American soldiers, I want to cover your back when you hand those tags to the folks who believe that we should stay the course, (how long for ever and ever?) GOOD LUCK, I HOPE YOU GET IN AND ONLY WISH YOU COULD EXPAND YOUR DISTRICT TO COVER LYONS COLORADO. Thanks Bill, Max and Jay for trying! I Don’t want forget to thank FireDogLake! Jim Thompson
Howie Klein @ 183
Oh, is he still in? I heard you were having trouble finding a key that he was, ahem, “comfortable” with.
Mr Fawcett if you’re stil there don’t hesitate to tell potential voters that you’re an Eagle Scout. It should still matter to Patriots.
Mr. Winter you may want to bring up any of these statements

I like Barton Gellman, he never reports enough. And of course at the WPNI there’s Dan Froomkin. Shailagh Murray has done some good work. I guess my scope tends to be a bit limited in terms of subjects that I read at the Post, but in a perfect world they would a good, long look at the way they prioritize who covers what.
I’m also heavily looking into this.
Golly. I was just dealing with our pet right-wing troll, who came by to expectorate all of the latest spin on the Plame case. For instance:
“The fact is that Valerie Plame Wilson was outed in the 1990s by Alderich Ames. She hasn’t been sent overseas in years. She was not a covert agent, and no laws were violated in revealing her identity.”
This is like that scene in Annie Hall where the Woody Allen character is like, “I have Marshall McLuhan right here…”

BarbaraB, what sort of budget do you have? And are you thinking talk radio? The local lib station is 760 AM. Winter, at least, already has spots running there. 850 AM is the most popular talk station. It’s very expensive, but its drivetime shows reach tons of commuters. 710 and 630 are popular political talk stations, but even their drivetime stuff slants pretty conservative.
If you have the budget, a big buy on 850 would be great.
Mr. Fawcett
I am not sure how you feel, but I think James Dobson is one of the most dangerous men in America today. Can you combat the drones that just do what Dobson tells them to do? I wish you well and believe that ordinary people are sick of this sycophant (Dobson).
Howie, well done on presenting this valuable column every week.
Mr. Winter, you convinced me. Wish I could personally vote for you, but I’m out of state. Though I can’t afford to donate much, I’m sending you some appreciation for your good work. Good luck.
On radio AM on Colorado’s front range, 850 is a conservative bastion (Rosen is an indepednence institute/tancredo/owens mouthpiece) but biggest drive time — 950 AM is mostly sports but also has wide coverage. 760 will get to anyone not red in the front range. 1600 is country — could be an unexpected interesting choice, though owner routinely plants Tancredo signs on his property. And hires undocumented immigrants to mow the lawn. 1340 is pbs.

850 is a conservative bastion through the Limbaugh/Rosen hours. But the drivetime slots are not especially political. 850 is the best opportunity to hit a large percentage of swing voters.
