I really enjoyed Christy’s post on Monday regarding the state of affairs in New Orleans a year after Katrina, Her link to the amazing Arabi Wrecking Krewe and the video of the great work that they are doing there for local musicians I found very inspiring. I wanted to list a few more places to donate money to help out displaced musicians in one of our most musical of cities.
Habitat For Humanity is building a Musician’s Village in the 9th ward partnered with Harry Connick Jr., and Branford and Ellis Marsalis
http://www.habitat-nola.org/projects/musicians_village.php
Preservation Hall’s New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund assists artists in returning to the Big Easy as well as providing aid to music educators and music venues.
Legendary New Orleans club Tipitina’s has a foundation to help artists and also donates musical instruments to New Orleans schools. Its goal is to put a musical instrument in the hands of every New Orleans student. Hallelujah!

Best playlist ever, Donita. Not just ’cause they’re all great pieces, or that this is totally topical. It just fits together as a song sequence very, very nicely.
Professor Longhair!
Don’t know what your missing. As a kid, you new Mardi Gras was coming when you heard him whistling on the radio: “Mardi Gras in New Orleans.”
But YouTube has his beautiful version of “Tipitina.” If you enjoy piano, you’re in for a treat.

Hi Donita!
Thank You for this link. My 21 year old daughter has a nice flute from band in H.S. that she no longer uses, I’m going to show her this link and see if she will donate it to the Katrina victims.
One area she is passionate about is donating her O negative blood when I told her it’s rare and universal, she took it upon herself to sign up at the blood drives for a few years now.

Hi Jane! I’m recording an album right now so I don’t have any gigs lined up. I’ll let you know. You’ll be in town soon, yes?
My band here in Alaska raised just over $1,000 for the St. Bernard Parish Comunity Band. They came out of Katrina and Rita far worse than the New Orleans Community Band. St. Bernard CB lost instruments, library, gear, meeting place and band members in the catastrophe.
The Baton Rouge Concert Band has been helping coordinate efforts to support community bands in the devastated areas from day one of Katrina.
http://www.batonrougeconcertband.org/ is BRCB’s home page, but like most band pages down there, it has been up and down for the past year.

Donita:
thank you for making us realize how important it is for New Orlean’s healing to rebuild it’s musical heritage. We might find in the future many jazz and R&B artists actually singing about the horrible time after Katrina hit the city.
Music has a way of uncovering the injust and exposing the illegitimate – as it did during the Vietnam era. It is so very appropriate that you offered us a taste of New Orleans’ musical richness. I look forward to all the ballads and protest songs that will focus on the neglect, abuse broken promises that have characterized New Orlean’s rebuilding effort.
Are any of you NOLAns old enough to have heard Sweet Emma Barrett live?
GOD, I loved her!
Meters! What, no Dirty Dozen?
After the storm hit, my band took part in a local (Northampton MA) benefit concert and helped raise over $2500, which was slated to go to the Red Cross. Lord knows where it actually ended up, but hopefully it did some good. Another drop in a bucket that still isn’t anywhere near filled.
The father of an old friend of mine is Deacon John Moore, a noted New Orleans guitarist. He came through okay, as did most of his family. Wish all families could’ve said the same.
Anyhow, here’s what’s spinning in iTunes on the G5 today:
Warren Zevon – Sentimental Hygiene
Syd Barrett – The Madcap Laughs
Roy Buchanan – That’s What I Am Here For
Pete Townshend – Empty Glass
Dire Straits – On Every Street

Dipper Mouth Blues has made my day!
Great point, Titanyum! Let the tunes roll, full of rage and pain.
Thanks, Donita, thanks from a few angles:
1) I’ve got Professor Longhair’s song “Tipitina” running through my head right now;
2) Irma Thompson’s choir-backed, revelrous version of “Time Is On My Side” resurrects a great old favorite tune (there was a creepy Denzel Washington movie which made heavy use of the song and really ruined it for me, as Azazel, the hateful demon character used it as his theme song about 50 times–and then, there’s also the Rolling Stones problem);
3) For introducing me to a few New Orleans songs I’d never heard before and generally brightening my day;
4) For reminding me to do something more for New Orleans.
I just dug out my old Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel records (Hole and Nail), enjoying the blast from the past, for the moment!
The spin I’m in, NOLA soula edition:
ahh, grimy funky goodness…
Hip Drop – The Explosions … this is a party.
Can you hear me – Lee Dorsey
Big Chief – Prof. Longhair … the flip is an instrumental version. Gooood lord.
Iko Iko – Dixie Cups … gonna set your flag on fire, kiddos.
It’s Raining – Irma Thomas … that’s my song, right there.
Wisdom of a Fool – Johnnie Jackson and the Blazers
No Substitute/If I had a Hammer – Eldridge Holmes … ooowwwee, a two-sider.
Cordova – The Meters.
I’m gonna git ya – Betty Harris … such sauce.
and many, many more.
When I was in college, I used to ride the legendary “City of New Orleans” train back and forth from home to school. Steve Goodman captured the spirit of the train and the people that ride it – working class, folks getting by, riding north and south from Chicago to the Big Easy, with stops up and down the Mississippi (more or less). Train travel can be more social than airplane trips or bus rides, because people were often going up and down the aisles, kids running from one side to the other or front to back, etc. When Katrina hit, I thought back to the various “train friends” from the trips I made back then, and wondered how they were doing.
Great set, Donita, and great way to help the city come back. I’m looking forward not just to the protest songs about the neglect and such on the part of the government and various corporate interests, but also the blues that will show the resilience and strength of the people in the face of such outrageousness.

It’s already begun – check out Chris Thomas King’s “Rise” and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s “What’s Going On”. IIRC, Shout Factory, the DDBB’s label, is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of “What’s Going On” to the Tipitina Foundation.

Hello all, I’m sorry I wasn’t here sooner but the chaos of moving this week and now some added personal drama freshly sprung on me at noontime today has kept me on my toes with life matters. I’m here for any technical issues, and I will be trying to fix the space up top to make it look a little nicer. I was rushed today publishing this and didn’t have time to be fussy about the layout. I’ve provided several updates since yesterday, though not on this thread. Other pups and lambs have contributed also. THe response in the left blogosphere has been…..uh a bunch of snarky comments and name calling….oooooohhhhhh scaaaaary. *Ilson – FYI – “Duck of Death” is how the Little Bill character in Eastwood’s “Unforgiven,” pronounced “Duke of Death,” the name of a fictitious book. I have no clue if that adds any meaning to what the Duck is trying to say, just thought you would like to know.
Hey Donita – hate to be obvious, but I know the first song that popped into my head was Hank Williams ‘Jambalaya’…and while I’m at it, hell, native son Randy Newman’s ‘Louisiana 1927′ – the lyrics are frigging prophetic…

lotus @ 92
Lotus, you’ve got a manual computer? Time to upgrade to the kind you plug into the wall!
;)
Hang in there!
It’s worth looking at David Broder’s Wa Po chat in order to understand how much the man is, or is not, plugged into what is happening, whether he is keeping up with the news, how unfamiliar he is with the Internet tubes, and all-in-all how much he is truly part of the Beltway. He used to be one of the few DC-based writers who got out into the States and cities.
An example:
This response means that Broder doesn’t realize that Bush made the claim recently. Instead he turned it into simply a criticism of Bush, to which he quickly took umbrage. Mr. Broder, it isn’t a requirement. The question is whether the President was being honest in making the claim.
And another:
Told by whom? Really? Yeah, I’ve been told that also. It has been all over the news. And of course this one:
Or the news either? Broder explains:
In his defense, it appears that Broder was doing his own typing, which is nice to know, but he was also hitting several double-keys with his fingers (he also typed “Micvhigan” at one point) and omitting several spaces between words.
Anyway, someone from Rochester expressed great surprise that the Dean of DC Journalism didn’t know about Stevens’ and Byrd’s secret holds on Obama’s bill, using some rather pointed sarcasm, which led to this exchange:
Broder thinks that someone who uses sarcasm toward him should “clam up”? Thin skin, what?
My take on this, plus his suggestion that few people read blogs because only 1/4 of computer users do so, is that Broder simply is not comfortable in the cyber age.
As for outing Valerie Plame:
So that’s all it was, huh?
As for mixed metaphors (”mess” “fish” “hue and cry” “scalp” — that’s four different ones right there in one sentence, including one that we may properly consider somewhat racially insensitive), I wonder if Broder was a bit too relaxed in his typing.
But mostly I just wonder if he is disconnected, and has little idea what’s going on in this country.
Lina,
What I want is for the left to mobilize the way the right has for the last decade. The power of propaganda is huge and the right knows it. Remember how they went after CBS for the Reagan docudrama?
‘Duck of Death — what do you think we should do? Flagellate ourselves? Do you usually attack the victim? Weak!’
*ilson46201, Yes you are a victim and you will remain one apparantly. A careful reading of what i posted would indicate, provided you had the requisite reading comprehension, that I want to see some mobilization as the right would do. No I don’t want you to self-flagellate, but as you describe yourself as ‘victim’ I’m sure you do enough of that.
OT – oh, this isn’t good… regarding the Busby/Bilbray kerfuffle over certification of the vote – judge just ruled and dismissed the recount…

Prof sed re Broder:
But mostly I just wonder if he is disconnected, and has little idea what’s going on in this country.
I would bet a lot on that one. I’ve mentioned here before that the Broders are old family friends. David is in ill health and gettin’ old, as are we all. IMHO, he should have retired 5 years ago because he’s messin’ up his reputation as a fair and reasonable judge of the DC dogsh*t. ( i like alliteration) I don’t think he really cares about any of this anymore; but I also think he’s afraid to retire. Just MHO.
Prof @ 95
I tend to agree that Broder is a bit too locked into the DC mindset stuff, but on this one, I think we need to cut him a little slack. I know when I’ve been off at a remote cabin for a couple of weeks of vacation, it takes me a couple of days to get back up to speed. The whole “secret hold” story is only a couple of days old, as was the Camus book thing. Think about some of the commentors here, who go away for a week and then come back with a comment “whoa – sounds like I missed something – someone bring me up to speed here.”
In another part of the chat, he was asked about the Missouri Senate race, and he noted that it’s on his list of states to visit between now and election day. IOW, he still gets out to the states.
Slamming him for Fred Hiatt – or for refusing to discuss the editorials – isn’t helpful or appropriate. Let’s keep after him, by all means, but let’s keep after him for the things he’s responsible for.
Like that comment about Plamegate. Funny, I don’t come across many reporters or columnists who “smell something fishy” in a story and decide to look the other way. If there’s something fishy, there’s a story there – go find it and tell me about it!
new thread – And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’
Here is a place to find your local ABC affiliate if you’d like to express an opinion directly to them about their plans to air this 9/11 tripe.

Hey, DoDeath, here’s the difference between you and me. While you asked whether we were gonna do anything about the ABC 9/11 tripe, I found out where to go to find any local affiliate and tell ‘em what you think.
Can we get more organized on this? Yes. Can we do it by calling each other names? No.
It’s called research and taking action. I recommend it!
Prof says
September 1st, 2006 at 1:33 pm*
It’s not just Broder. The entire conventional news establishment is fight’n like hell to just ignore – in the hope that they’ll go away – the newer, up-to-the minute- news establishment, which is found within the blogs.
Around here, we have news within the hour, at the very least, and opinions within milli-seconds afterward.
This is revolutionary, and as with all revolutions, someone must leave as the new someone comes to the fore. I submit that there is not a single soul, presently existent w/in OldMedia, who could survive in the blogs, for the blogs require instantaneous, intelligent response, and none of the ‘old dogs’., e.g. Broder, Will, Friedman, could keep up.
Information is coming at lightning speed, and if it takes three days to form an opinion, you’re dust – but they’ll fight against that.
OldCoastie @ 98
I think that qualifies as an understatement, old coastie. Shit. All the irregularities in that one – the voting machine sleep-overs, Hastert swearing him in before the dust had settled. San Diego is a cesspool of rethug politics. Pete Wilson came from there. AS bad as he was, other local pols make him smell like a rose. And it was, after all, Cunningham’s seat.
IIRC, three out of the last four mayors elected didn’t serve a minute of their terms due to scandals that popped before they even took office. The scandals were common knowledge before the elections among city insiders, who would have been content to play it as it lay if the press hadn’t found out and made it public. Just like in DC. Well, except for the part about the press.
Duck of Death: I sicced Paul Krugman on Bush’s claim that he read “3 Shakespeares.” Smacks of “fuzzy math” of the sort PK built his rep on unmasking.
My working hypothesis: 1 Shakespeare = 1 Polonius quote.
DISSIDENT NOTE
A right of return to NOLA shouldn’t turn on chops. Make that the criterion and you play into the “rhythm” stereotype. I love NOLA jazz, but c’mon! There’s a broader right here! Gotta see ethnic cleansing for what it is! NOLA is occupied territory.
If I were a horn in Bush’s burgeoning Disneyesque NOLA, I’d lay my brass down ‘cept to play dirges for the evacuees in Texas and Kentucky and for the returnees sitting in those off-limits FEMA trailers caught between State Farm and HUD.
The White Folks have no boogey. That’s a fount of power. The message: Boogey’ll cost ya. Price: Give us our city back, with or without the chops!
They’ll crawl. What’s more, USA will back the evacuees. They haven’t forgotten the shame of Katrina.
Watch for this issue, it’s real, and it’s on the rise.
TeddySanFran @ 103
Another difference is that I know what namecalling is and you apparantly do not. A careful reading will show that I did NOT engage in name calling, I did however register my disgust at our team’s inability to do what the right does regularly…mobilize and scare the shit out of any network that attempts to propagandize against them. As far as calling the local affiliate, this will accomplish little if anything. ABC doesn’t care about your opinion(unless your a wingnut apparantly), they only care about the bottom line. So you researched and found the phone number of the local ABC affiliate? I’m guessing that took all of 5 minutes. We need to find who their BIG accounts are and go after them. And yes, I’m researching that very thing now.

Nah. Nor to C.C. or Mink. Just a nom du web. My band is called Group DeVille. Four old middle-aged pros, but strictly part-time these days. Totally DIY. Original tunes from Western Mass with a sound kinda like The Kinks meet Dire Straits. I think clicking on my name up there will take you to our blog.
Thanks for asking. Each year we try to do half paying gigs and half benefits. The paying ones are so we can be self-supporting and still afford to give the other half away to various charities and stuff. Acting locally and all that.
I’ve lived in New Orleans for the past 12 years. Last year I lived in a half dozen places across the country. Wherever I went I was always asked why I wanted to come back home. Two nights ago at my local bar, dba, Walter “Wolfman” Washington was playing his regular Wednesday gig. Stevie Wonder dropped by and sang for two sets (Aint’ No Sunshine, and Higher Ground had especial significance). Where else could this happen. When we talk about the culture of New Orleans, what we mean is the old, weird ideal of America where anything is possible. It’s sad that that is not what can be expected throughout the country. But it is why so many of us are willing to live under third world conditions a year later. This is what we (all of us in America) were promised. This is where that promise still is expected.
Duck of Death @ 107
