We’re having one of those mornings at the Smith household. The Peanut has a fever again, after going the whole week feeling better, and we’ve added the dreaded ear clutch. Given the level of whimpering involved, I am not hopeful that we’ll avoid the ear infection diagnosis at the pediatrician’s office. Everyone cross your fingers for me…
In the meantime, here are a few things catching my eye as I sit here in the kitchen, watching Chicken Little (the comfort cartoon of choice), with a Small, Sick Peanut on my lap:
– The IAEA is not happy with Iran, paving the way for a big Security Council showdown over sanctions, made all the more difficult by the lack of trust of the Bush Administration’s intentions on the subject. Look for some serious debates over exact wording of any resolution put forward…since there is still so much debate as to what was and was not meant with the AUMF resolution here. (How much do you suck when a 35-year veteran of the foreign service publicly grades you with an F?)
– Coastal readers — please be careful of flooding and other weather problems as Ernesto churns up the Atlantic coast today.
– Someone remind me to send Liddy Dole a thank you note for wasting such a huge chunk of her budget on Lincoln Chaffee’s primary.
– The wait is almost over. DeLay has a book deal…now we’ll get to know his innermost feelings. All he needs is a sobbing interview with Barbara Walters to complete the package. (Blergh.)
– Has your local politician apologized for anything lately? There’s some accountability in the air…
– E.J. Dionne has some thoughts on poverty this morning.
Hope you guys are having a better morning than I am today. Now for my first cuppa coffee, and more snuggling with the little one until we go to the doc.

Got those fingers crossed, but it’s sure hard typing that way. *g*
And Good Morning all!
Okay, is anyone else not getting the picture at the top of the post, or is it just me? I put in a lovely shot of some coffee cake and coffee, but I’m getting nothing…
The incredibly bad WaPo editorial blaming Joe Wilson for outing his wife requires levity (and not about that).
So how’s this.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the magical stylings of George W. Bush, aka THE AMAZING WANKER!
I see the cake just fine. Hope you don’t mind if I snarf a small piece?
Good morning Christy. Sorry your young one is sick again. It’s early and my brain isn’t working yet, but I remember reading somewhere that there was a connection between recurring childhood ear infections and food allergies. Don’t know if I remember accurately.
That coffee cake looks good. Maybe I could add it to my hips just by looking at it.
Oh, sorry Christy for the bad start to your day. Hope things get better soon.
Switching over to a little Liberman update from our local paper: (direct link not working, sorry)
http://www.newstimeslive.com/n…..id=1011906
Read it and see what a pompous ass Joe really is. It just gets worse and worse. He’s like the kid who didn’t get invited to the birthday party, but gets mommy to make it all better.
Christy,
LOL – that coffee cake was the first thing I zeroed in on and I’m drooling. After eating homemade ice cream from a local merchant all summer, I’ve started “dieting” to get back into my fall clothes.
Must.not.think.of.eating.delicious.coffee.cake.
Sorry about Peanut. I remember those days. (With two pre-schoolers two years apart, I swear there was a six month period, before the youngest was four that one or the other was sick every day.) Just know that once your daughter is in Kindergarten, she’ll probably stay nice and healthy – and so will you and your husband.
You’re probably not seeing the coffee cake because we ate it already…mmmmm
We had a Democratic Senatorial debate last night, between Ben Cardin and Kweisi Mfume, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. The League sets a benchmark of 15% polling to qualify a candidate for participation in the debate. Three of the Dem candidates (it’s a huge field) who were not invited to participate showed up at the MD Public TV studios to protest. One, Alan Lichtman, was arrested, together with his wife and someone from the campaign (and either his wife or the other person was not sitting down at the doors, but lying down…) for failing to heed a police request for them stop trying to enter the building.
Was quite a scene.
Hope the peanut feels better soon – have you tried the warm heating pad on the ear? I remember the doc telling me that sitting upright helps, too – lessens the pressure on the eardrum. Earaches are the worst pain – still remember one I had when I was about 6.
Starting to rain here in central MD, and wind picking up. Would be a great morning to have slept in…
Could this be a Kiss Float event?

Politics march into Newtown’s parade
Democratic Town Committee rescinds accidental invitation to Lieberman, setting off firestorm.
http://www.newstimeslive.com/n…..id=1011906
CHS: My son was sick his whole childhood until we had tubes put in his ears and his tonsils removed. I mean every time he began to feel better, 10 days later he was sick again. This went on for over a year. Finally, we took the drastic measure and he has not been sick a day in his life since.
Sorry Redd, no fun with a sick peanut. It seemed like my daughter would be sick from the time she started school until it ended in May. She is just now at 7 getting to the point where her immune system has gotten stronger.
At least you’ll be able to watch the ‘Neers tomorrow.
Bookwoman @ 7
My my, that Joey “Gotta Go” boy sure is whiny. He and Dan “Can’t Do Anything Right” Gerstein almost sound like…yup, they definitely sound like…WATBs! *g*
Re: the endless rounds of childhood illnesses: intelligent design, my ass. Feel better, P-nut, hang in there, mom.
If she otitis media the ped will most likely presrcibe the useless omoxycillin. A friend who was the head of reasearch at children’s hospital did clinical trials on the use of this drug for OM and found it completely ineffective. It has been pushed by the drug companies for decades to replace the equally ineffective penicillin previously prescribed for pediatric OM.
You might do some reseach on this before you pour useless (and potentially harmful) antibiotics into the peanut.
Bookwoman @ 7
Lieberman is a putz. I’ve been following this saga, since I live just a few towns over in Danbury and have actually been in the parade as a Kerry supporter (and by the way, Kerry is not a vegetable). It was pointed out in one of the many articles about this bruhaha that Lieberman had been invited every year to participate in the Labor Day event, but not deigned to show up for the past nine years. But of course, because those bad partisan Dems were so mean to him, he’s going to show them that he is a bigger man, a unifying gift for Connecticut. Can you spell delusional?
Saw Lamont, Diane Farrell, Jim Dean and a bunch of other great Dem candidates for local office in Greenwich last night (Farrell was endorsed by DFA). Lamont was amazing (apparently he’s improved a lot in his public speaking skills), Farrell was great – and they were all pumped and very optimistic. Not one word about Lieberman.
Christy, if you send Liddy a thank you note for spending her money, you will get a letter back that is totally unrelated to anything you said. The disconnect there is amazing.
Bookwoman @
7
Sounds like mommy takes him by the hand and brings him to the party he wasn’t invited to and gets pissy with the host for not inviting her “precious” son.
Christy,
Sorry to hear you all are still in the throes of the early childhood illnesses. I hope for all of you that it passes SOON.
Yep, the cake shows up, but I don’t see any chocolate . . . .
Nutmeggers,
Should the Ned volunteers from across the border show up in our Ned shirts for the parade? Would that be a help?
Ah, poor Peanut. Hope she feels better soon.
RevDeb @ 19
I think that’s a great idea. I would in a flash, but am heading up to Boston Monday afternoon. I’m sure the Lamont team has thought about it, but it wouldn’t hurt to send the suggestion.
There are a lot of conservative Dems in that community – don’t know if they would still support someone like Lieberman or not. I remember, when I was with the Kerry contingent, some shouting from the parade sidelines – “I’m a Zell Miller Dem.” (Didn’t know that was something to be proud of – lol)
Poor peanut — ear infections are just the worst! Hmmm, hug her some more and give her whatever she wants.
meanwhile, this whole Newtown thing (Thanks Freakdaddy at 10) with Lieberman not marching with the Dems got me thinking…. The article keeops saying Lieberman is running as an independent, which we know he is not….
But so what? Why isn’t the independent candidate putting up “VOTE INDEPENDENT” or
“Declare your Independence from the Republicans and Democrats and Vote Independent Party in November”
The real Independent Party guy wouldn’t be able to buy the party recognition he is getting free from Joe’s run (and the idiots in the press who don’t know the difference). AND the Independent party is way above (#3 I believe) the CFL party (#5) on the ballot. If I were a devious sort, I would be supporting just such an ad campaign by the real Indy Party candidate.

Article by Joe Conosan about Hadassah Lieberman and Big Pharma at Salon.com
Sorry to hear about the Peanut, Christy. My 8 mo. old, Fuss, has her fourth ear infection since the middle of June. Monday, she had the last of her antibiotic, but got some kind of virus and a fever. Wednesday, a rash. Yesterday, doc diagnosed another ear infection. Next stop: ear, nose & throat doc for some tubes.

Federal agents raid legislative offices
Ed*ard Teller says:
August 31st, 2006 at 11:44 pm
Re the FBI searches of offices of the GOP Alaska Legislative leadership this afternoon:
Local evening TV news revealed nothing new. The warrants requested documents related to Veco, a big player in upcoming oil and gas deals. The governor, who came in third in the GOP primary here ten days ago, was expected to call a special session of the legislature tomorrow.
That session will be to continue looking at future tax structures for oil extraction and for solutions to the natural gas dilemma on the north slope.
Many top players in the Alaska house and senate were searched. One was the son of US Sen. Ted Stevens, who some had predicted would emerge within the next two weeks to take Don Young’s place on the GOP ballot for Young’s seat in DC.
Another was Wasilla Rep. Vic Kohring, who came in on the Gingrich tide and has been Alaska’s most prominent poster boy for the Grover Norquist-Tim VcVeigh axis of mainsream GOP politics statewide, and especially where I have the fortune to live.
Bold is mine.
dab from CT. #16,
I was thinking about Joe’s showing up for past parades when you mentioned that he had not shown for the previous nine years. Pretty sure of himself then, but now he needs every vote.
I wonder how many other towns are experiencing the same thing with Joelier, wanting to finally march in their parades after being a “no-show” for many previous years.
This could also show the towns and town councils what a hypocrite he is.
Christy, sorry to hear about the Peanut’s illness. I really do not know how you can do all this multi-tasking.
CHS & peanut Get well soon.
I lost a close friend this week and I’m feeling as low on that as it gets. Work, Bush seem trivial, the things that matter the most rise to the top and we wish we had just one more minute left. The evil and greed seething in our government responsible for senseless suffering and death, so many families wishing that they had just one more minute left with their loved ones.
Dude I was sick with ear, nose and throat stuff the first several years of my life …until they yanked my tonsils the out. I hope the Peanut feels better real soon.
Ooo.sorry to hear about Fi’s earache, Christy — hope it’s a quicky.
Unfortunately, the coffee cake is invisible here (but then, so am I, so we’re tied).
May your pediatrician and Jamie also race to a tie in knocking out these bugs what ails us.
And may tommy yum and all our other Carolinians be safe today!

Ach du lieber just looked at the weather report. Maybe shopping can wait another day.
Sorry to hear the little one is ailing, Christy. Been there, done that, and I know it’s miserably frustrating. I second the motion upthread on the heating pad; we have one of those bead-filled ones that can be heated in the microwave. The kids are now old enough to fetch, heat and apply it themselves; they know it’s the first line of defense against sinus headaches. If you don’t have one handy, you can make one with uncooked rice (not instant) and a cotton sock; fill the sock with the rice, leaving enough room to tie the sock shut (a ribbon will work), microwave 1 to 3 minutes until warm at 1 minute intervals checking for temperature.
And ditto the comment upthread on the food allergies; nearly half of kids with chronic ear infections have a food allergy, and most frequently it’s a sensitivity to milk. (Runs in my family and may explain why my son had so many ear infections…)

Had 3 children. One day made three trips to the pediatrition’s office with each kid the last one in the evening, culminating in the “first asthma attack”.
Tubes worked wonders for my son.
Sorry to hear about peanut.

He also had mega allergies some food, mostly envionmental.
But as a former school nurse(yep didn’t have enough fun with 3 at home) if indicated, tubes really work. The most important thing is to preserve hearing. When Stefan’s speech was not were it should be, I knew it was time.

There’s a number of things going on with Ohio that are interesting, but I’ve gotten no further than skimming the articles on a lot of it. I have been locating what seem to be some good local blogs (one in Ney’s district) that could be good resources.
Couple things on a drive-by before I have to do errands.
Deb Pryce is working with someone lately of the DeLay camp. And said some idiotic crap to the WSJ when asked about why she fades into the wallpaper
Wow. http://loganselm.blogspot.com/
Scroll down for the DeLay connection, and further for a YouTube parody of the Gang of Four. It’s laugh or cry here in the Buckeye State.
There’s also a definite story in what connection there is between a supposed anti-partisan non-profit Johnny-come-lately has to do with the infamous Patriot Pastors and Kenny Boy Blackwell. Funny, they say that they’re not supporting any particular candidate, just their “issues”, but none, none of the FAQ’s etc. deal with any race other than Strickland v. Blackwell. The only recently revealed President of CommonSense.org (which sounds an awful lot like Kenny Boy’s pet SOS program: Uncommon Sense), portrayed himself as a voter on the fence to a reporter at a Strickland gathering, having already given the max to Kenny, AND Santorum, for pity’s sake! http://www.buckeyestateblog.com/node/2597
This is the most recent post as the inter-relationships play out. A previous incarnation of these usual suspects were found to have used illegal money and false ads to attack sitting Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick in 2000.

So JL campaign is huffy about not being exactly welcome to march in Newton Labor Day parade. Maybe they should have thought of that before the primary.
Old Karl has lost it, indeed. I have a friend who has some contacts with the administration (purposefully vague) and he or she reports that Karl is very upset, not looking healthy, stressed, and as s/he said — “just one donut from away from infarction.” If he needs rest, I understand the Lieberman campaign needs assistance….
ironranger @ 48
Ha ha ha! Very nice — That needs to get into Tom Swan’s portfolio of one-liners!
When a child’s ear does not drain right, the bacteria begins to grow. If you keep giving them antibiotics, then they will become immune to them. This is not good if they become sick with some other disorder.
I cannot tell you how sick my son was the first 3 years of his life. His ears would not drain properly. As soon as I said, “listen, doc, I come to this office every 30-45 days. Could it be something else going on in his ears?” and, an ears doctor was recommended and surgery for his tonsils taken out and a drain put in his ear. He has never been sick since then.
Leather Heather is crying now about how she got pushed back in the NM State Fair parade with all the other politicos. Always got to ride in the front car, “Why Meeeee???” she wantta know. The NMSF peeps say it’s all about being “neutral.” She bawlin’ away still. Tryna’ make a federal case of it.
Yep. Parade time in the beloved country. Cry. Cry.
ppp — just read your comment about your friend. So sorry. Although it is true that all change is loss, Real loss is a most difficult thing. Take care of those close to you and take extra good care of yourself.
ironranger and immanentize: heh heh heh.
PP, sorry for your loss. It seems there is some kind of bad karma in the air. All I have been hearing about latley is death. Several aquaintences have remarked on it, too.
Re: Fiona’s ear. Although Littleprop was never an ear infection kid, when I was growing up one of my sisters had it bad for a few years.
The heating pad trick really works. It give immediate pain relief AND seems to dry up the infection if you keeo at it past the time when the diminution in pain makes it no longer necessary. And, even if it doesn’t work, it won’t do any harm.
Lastly, WTF is up with the freakin’ WAPO? Wasn’t 1×2×6 broken by Dana Priest? Are they throwing her under the bus?
Those morons are now taking one of their own star reporters and devaluing her into the Judy Miller zone. If they are so sure their own reporting was wrong, they have an obligation to do a story on that and explain how they got it wrong.
Otherwise this editorial makes no sense at all.
I can’t wait to see what Editors & Publishers Mag. will have to say about this.
What piffal!
By the way there’s a very mood-dampening editorial in the WaPo today. Don’t know if it’s been commented on, yet…but here’s a slice…It’s called “End of An Affair”:
It follows that one of the most sensational charges leveled against the Bush White House — that it orchestrated the leak of Ms. Plame’s identity to ruin her career and thus punish Mr. Wilson — is untrue. The partisan clamor that followed the raising of that allegation by Mr. Wilson in the summer of 2003 led to the appointment of a special prosecutor, a costly and prolonged investigation, and the indictment of Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, on charges of perjury. All of that might have been avoided had Mr. Armitage’s identity been known three years ago.
That’s not to say that Mr. Libby and other White House officials are blameless. As prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald has reported, when Mr. Wilson charged that intelligence about Iraq had been twisted to make a case for war, Mr. Libby and Mr. Cheney reacted by inquiring about Ms. Plame’s role in recommending Mr. Wilson for a CIA-sponsored trip to Niger, where he investigated reports that Iraq had sought to purchase uranium. Mr. Libby then allegedly disclosed Ms. Plame’s identity to journalists and lied to a grand jury when he said he had learned of her identity from one of those reporters. Mr. Libby and his boss, Mr. Cheney, were trying to discredit Mr. Wilson; if Mr. Fitzgerald’s account is correct, they were careless about handling information that was classified.
Nevertheless, it now appears that the person most responsible for the end of Ms. Plame’s CIA career is Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson chose to go public with an explosive charge, claiming — falsely, as it turned out — that he had debunked reports of Iraqi uranium-shopping in Niger and that his report had circulated to senior administration officials. He ought to have expected that both those officials and journalists such as Mr. Novak would ask why a retired ambassador would have been sent on such a mission and that the answer would point to his wife. He diverted responsibility from himself and his false charges by claiming that President Bush’s closest aides had engaged in an illegal conspiracy. It’s unfortunate that so many people took him seriously.

Friend of mine covers the Washington beat for the ABQ Journal.
I’d like to make sure he covers this adequately.
Poor Fiona – I had ear infections and they are so miserable. Don’t blame yourself – we didn’t have GWB speeches on the TV when I was a little kid, so it’s probably not that. ;)
********
The levity of a hegemon – the only thing I didn’t like is that I felt obligated to go read the silly WaPo piece. How do they straight faced say Wilson was wrong when he said Iraq wasn’t looking for yellow cake from Niger? The few good reporting pieces that they let leak through don’t really make it worthwhile, do they?

Chronic ear infections: I agree they are often tied to food allergies.
Aww poor Peanut. My son went through this too,his first ear infection was at age 4 months, the last one at age 7,when we finally figured out how to treat him,and rooted out some of the causes/suspected causes.
Cut back on her dairy(she can get calcium from juices with calcium added),there is a connection for alot of kids. And I found a product called Airborne that works to keep the infections from returning as often.Echinacea tincture(Herbs for Kids was the brand name we used)worked like a charm in lieu of round after round of antibiotics(use it early at the first suspicion something’s up,10 days on,10 days off,all through the fall and winter).Sometimes pollen/mold allergies can trigger the ear infection thing too.Peanut may have a pet dander allergy, our cats used to sleep with my son, when I banished them from his room that also seemed to help a little(we were desperate and tried every single thing we could think of,lol).
For some reason, switching over to organic milk, eggs and meat seemed to have a good effect, but it could be a coincidence. It’s more expensive, but as a result we eat less of those things, and more veggies and fruits and pastas/rice.The whole family lost a little poundage, which was a bonus.
lhp It seems the editorial page and the newsroom at WaPo are at war. Just like at the WSJ. I wonder who will win? It is a great way to tell if this country will climb out of its dark place of denial (editorial pages) or will actually begin the process of righting itself (the newsies).
My guess in this particular case is that the editorial will just spur Dana P. to dig deeper.
I heard it on KUNM news last night. Maybe check the news dept there? I’ll look. KUNM.org
“Is Ben related to Ted?”
Yes, son.
Good morning, Christy. I found that a warm, soft face cloth over a hurting ear was always comforting to my babies. Visiting the doc sounds like a good idea, especially with the fever.
I would love to be a fly on the wall in Dana’s office today.
On second thought, this may be a good thing. Ms. priest is no creampuff and SHE KNOWS who the 1 in 1×2×6 is. Maybe 1 will have some little pushback tidbits for her.
This is it folks. They are spinning as hard as they can to change the story from Admin perfidity, to it’s all joe Wilson’s fault and Pat Fitz is either gullible or criminal or political.
I think Karl looks haggard because kKrl’s been workin’ hard. Smart timing, do it during a week when everybody is vacationing. This is one of the few weeks of the politcal year when even hard core stay in touch junkies have been accustomed to leaving behind their Blackberries and turning off their cell phones and skip checking their messages.
The only push back, will come from those of us left working this week.
JL & co perpetually exhibit do as I say, not as I do behavior.
When our kids had ear infections, we cut down on the milk. Milk produces a lot of mucous…clogs up those toobz.
ppp: I lost a good friend a in car accident just over a year ago..it’s been tough. This amazing person lived 90 years in just 51. She was an energizer bunny. The most awesome quality she had was that almost everyone who knew her counted her as one of their best friends.
looseheadprop @ 56
Second both points here — what a jaw-dropping WAPO editorial.
On to Fiona — had inner ear infections as a child myself and remember sleeping on a heating pad with the infected ear down — it did work (still hurt, though). Wrap in thick layer of toweling and put under the pillowcase to avoid over heat and skin irritation. (or you could use a hot water bottle to avoid any risk)
Any eardrops you have to give her, carry around in a pocket so they remain at your body temperature and they won’t hurt as much to administer (I do this with my dog’s ear cleaner – it works for him and he’s a huge baby about his ears)
Angry Old Broad –
I agree, especially for girl children, organic dairy and eggs (without antibiotics) really seems to boost immunity.
ppp – > so sorry to hear about your loss. take care of yourself…and love up everyone you know…life is very precious. Too bad, Bush and his brownshirts treat it so cheaply.
I hadn’t thought about that tie with Priest. Given how the AG’s office is gearing up to go after reporters, and DOD has the new grant for a service to “monitor” and “rank” the LA Time, NYT and WaPo to keep track of the “tone”of their pieces; it pretty much looks like WaPo’s editorial board has decided on the Vichy/Chamberlain (he seems such a popular reference point these days, I thought I’d work him in) approach.
No editorials asking why Karl’s so quiet, eh?
looseheadprop @ 70
Good points. Vigilance.

mayan says:
September 1st, 2006 at 6:56 am *
mayan, anyone whose knows anything about Plame knows the author is the WaPo’s, neocon in residence, Fred Hiatt. It doesn’t contain any statement that is complete, accurate, or true. It has a lot in common with Fred’s A GOOD LEAK, from a few months ago.
We’ve known about Armitage for months. He’s one of three sources Novak used for his first article about Valerie.
If we’ve known about this for months, mayan, why is the spin only starting now?
I’d like to hear y’all’s thoughts on the WaPo editorial. I just don’t think it disproves Wilson’s thesis. The initial leak may have been inadvertent by Armitage, but did Rove know that? And why did he confirm it? What was the level of coordination between Armitage and Rove/Libby/Cheney et al? And does the fact that Wilson was outed by Armitage give a presidential appointee the legal (much less ethical) right to confim that fact?
Someone who knows more about this than me, how do we make WaPo sorry they spoke so carelessly?
Is this one of those take on the online chat things?
I’ve never done that before. What do I/we do?
lhp: I’m missing something wrt Dana Priest and WaPo. I scanned the comments, looking for a link and googled dana priest september 1. Nothing that makes any sense. Are they backing away from Dana’s reporting?
WaPo–
Something specifically going on internally at the Post, or are they gearing up to divert our attention from something really big? And if so what could that be.

ppp,
very sorry to hear of your loss. TRex lost a close friend recently as well. It’s such a jarring thing, losing a friend as opposed to a grandparent or parent (not that anything really prepares you for the latter, either). I lost my best friend twenty years ago and there’s still not many days that goes by without me running across something I’d love to share with him or thinking “What would Brad have to say about that? At first it triggers raw searing pain, eventually warm memories of comfortable times.
Best of luck on your journey through your grief.
rumpole, you’re asking all the right questions.
emptywheel has been all over Armitage for a long time. This is old news. If it had any truth, Ted Olson, Libby’s attorney,” would be filing to dismiss.
This is just a planned release by Rove to distract Americans from what matters leading up to November. Fred Hiatt is only too happy to help.

The new propaganda is that Armitage’s confession makes the entire Plame case go away.
Nothing to see here. No crime. They think they can get themselves off the hook at least in the eyes of the American public.
It’s about the elections.
Personally I’m glad to have the case highlighted again. An opportunity to talk about this administration outing a classified agent during war, and then covering it up for 3 years, wasting a lot of our tax dollars. Plus making it harder to recruit for the intelligence agencies and lowering morale.
And as Iran slinks our way, the chance to argue afresh that Plame’s specialty was WMD in Iran, and their incompetence (or deliberate malice) has made it much harder to know what Iran is REALLY doing with WMD. Of course that was their intent imo.
Heckuva job!

First year Criminal Law this semester — (Capital Punishment, Con. Crim. Procedure, International Crim., Trial Ad. and Evidence at other times) Getting all these first ideas down (de jure and de facto for example) is always good if there is a catchy way to remember them. I know the de jure and de facto diistinction is most often apply in the Con. Law equal protection stuff, but basic criminal law students (I believe) are more in need of distinguishing between what is “wrong in fact” and “wrong at law” more than any other group of students. It’s hard for them…. So the shouting distance idea was a total winner for the class — Thanks again!
John Casper @ 76
Somebody said in the comments yesterday or the day before, that they are trying to chnage the subject to distract from Katrina anniversay coverage.
Evidently, Jon Bennet wasn’t doing the job sufficently.
This looks SOOOO coordinated. The Nat’l Geographic piece was supposed to be a hachet job on Fitz and since it didn’t turn out that way (hat tip to Corrigan and Cloonan), you see tha vitriol in the HuffPo piece. Now you see outright spin from WSJ, Investors Busness Daily and WaPo.
Intersting that it appears in a Friday WaPo (Friday dumps anyone?). Do you think WaPo is trying to duck pushback on the Sunday morning shows by doing this so late? Hmmmm?
Good luck on the ear infection squad. It’s an awful stage, but this too shall eventually pass, as long as you have a good doc and appropriate meds.
I am not having a good morning, having read that said Senator Sanitorium is calling on women like Liddy Dole to recruit votes from women in the Keystone State. What the heck! This guy would rather we have a Talibamerica, where women are shrouded head to foot and men keep them barefoot, pregnant and powerless.
thanks lina!
Good morning all!
Just finished my second cuppa.
LindyH @ 79
Lindy,
Today the WaPo published an editorial saying that the 1×2×6 story (reported by Dana Priest) is not true.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..rrer=email
This link may work. they did not mention that WaPo was broke the story. Just said it wasn’t true and that Joe Wilson outed his wife.

I’m not sure if the above email works.
I assume, Fred Hiatt (A Good Leak) wrote this op-ed
disastertoo.T-re: Heather, baby. A friend also says it is on the front page of ABQ Journal, (subscription only) today.
It’s interesting. They’re acting as if there is no trial set for January.
This is all about pre-election posturing, it seems to me, and the continuation of Barbara Comstock’s Disinformation Adventure.
egregious @ 88
IF ONLY someone (anyone) would come forward with the whole truth. So far, the only people writing and talking are the WH propagandists and their friends in the MSM.
I don’t know how George Tenet lives with himself. He must take a lot of Ambien.

I think you meant Ted Wells. Ted Olsen did the Florida recount cases in 2000

You lucky lazy fellow! On that note, I, Mrs Imm and Little Imm are all headed up to New Hampshire, the White Mountains and Storyland this weekend. Storyland is an amusement park for little kids and so we will be relaxing and playing and hiking and eating and sleeping….
I REALLY NEED A VACATION!
R.I.P., Katharine Graham?
How I wish it could be so, but surely not lately.
Is today Daryn Kagan’s last day on CNN?
Imman,
You can have a vacation after you get back from NH :)
What’s really extraordonary is Hyatt placing the blame on Joe Wilson. Shorter WaPo: It’s your fault if I rape you. Smile and call it “love.”

Blaming Wilson…it’s egregious.

Thanks lhp.
immanentize @ 102
I have never read a more succinct description of me or my career!
immanentize,
I thought that was a great line, too. I have a book recommendation for anyone in your class interested in being a prosecutor. Certain chapters of “Outrage” by Vincent Bugliosi (on the OJ trial) should be required reading for all new prosecutors, imho. No matter how you feel about the outcome, it is an excellent dissection of what went wrong, and how it could have been done right.
Or even, perhaps, “truly egregious!”
Is anyone else having trouble loading some websites — particularly blogspot. I can’t get Americablog, dailykos, and some others. FDL is fine tho!
BQ _- thanks, I’ll check it out!
Pachacutec @ 105
Well said Pach. It has nothing to do with what’s real or accurate, it has everything to do with the short term memory of the voters. Wilson has much higher name recognition than Armitage, therefore, Rove blames Wilson.
Daryn Kagan Leaving CNN (yay)
later, pups!
Immanentize @ 7:24 – bring some warm woolies. It’s been chilly up this way!
Good Morning all…. Just gettin’ down my first cup of caffeine. Final thoughts on KO’s Patriotic act. I’ve always thought it was a grave injustice that he was exiled from ESPN. He was my favorite sports commentator. But now I know it HAD to happen so that he could answer his true calling on MSNBC…
What those right-wing wacko’s that run ESPN unleashed on the rest of their ilk is truly a blessing for the “civilized” world.. THANK YOU ESPN

Thanks John – bad week for the Stevens family.
I think they all look haggard and irritable and on the verge of incoherent rambles bc the enormity of some of what they have done is catching up with them. They still have good chances to walk from all of it with nothing more than a slap on the hand, to stack courts, make sure they have a Congress an successor deification that will hand out amnesty, engage in cover-ups, sanctify crimes, etc. – but it’s getting a bit dodgier. The what ifs are so many places – and just a few people who are willing to accept the consequences of taking a stand can make it all crater. They’ve surrounded themselves with pawns who all have to be taken down to get to them, and they know the people who might want to make them pay are not really going to want to ruin the lives and careers of all the pawns around them, so they feel pretty cushy still– but less so than before.
Leonard Pitts Jr. has a pretty good Olbermann-esque rant at http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/15412438.htm this morning.
peacearena – I sent you an email a while back – did you get it?
john casper
thank you for the email address at WaPo. I sent him an email letter and copied it to Dana priest at the WaPo commnets to the reporter page.
Maybe if she knows the public sees it her way, she will be more inclined to really stand up for herself and her own reporting.
At least, it may make her feel a little better.
c&l has a very prmising article up claiming we are going to win both houses
http://www.crooksandliars.com/
this is not going to happen unless we make sure e machines are out
Mojo @ 122
Right on. Olbermann is too good to be wasted on sports. Glad he’s moved on to a more worthwhile way to use his talents.
Speaking of sportscasters, Howard Cosell was a very obnoxious sportscaster in many ways, but I will always be grateful for the way he stood up for Mohammed Ali when the Champ refused to serve in a war he disapproved of:
Can’t get the edit button to work, but I mispelled Ali’s name. Should be: Muhammad Ali.
If anyone’s interested, here’s the actual IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear program. There’s going to be a lot said about the finding of highly enriched uranium particles.
However, as this story in the WaPo points out, I think there is rather less to this than is going to be protrayed. Iran has both slipped behind its own enrichment schedule for low enrichment, and has a plausible (I don’t know whether confirmable) story about the origin of the particles.
The IAEA report deals with Iranian compliance with UN 1696, and with the “Additional Protocol”. It is clear Iran has not complied with either. The additional protocol is an add-on to the NPT; as far as I know Iran has not ratified the additional protocol and therefore is not obligated to follow it. As far as I know nothing reported shows a violation of the NPT. If I am wrong I’d like to be corrected.
As far as I can tell, Iran is in violation of UN 1696 but not their NPT obligations.

See? I said last night he was out of ideas.
EAR INFECTION ADVICE:
1. See a homeopath. The homeopathic meds really do work (did for us). Pulsitilla was our favorite…you take the ‘candy pills’ every 15 min (avoid food 15 before and 15 min after taking pills, and never handle the pills, shake them into the mouth) when the first symptoms appear.
2. Consider a tonsillectomy. We waited till age 8, when the surgery helped, but it was more painful for our daughter and at that point she had no taste for food, since her giant tonsils had blocked all taste for such a long time.
good luck!
I think most parents try to teach their kids these basics:
Don’t lie
Don’t steal
Don’t cheat
Share
Don’t bully
Looks like the majority of repub & too many dem office holders, gov appointees, pundits, lobbyists, media, corps, etc abandoned their parent’s values or their parents had an entirely different value system. I don’t know how many times I have heard the Coulters, Rush’s, Roves etal & wondered how in the world they were brought up.
orangejumpsuit @ 127
Funny you should mention “The Champ” I live in Louisville were he grew up. There’s a VERY nice AlI museum downtown that should be a required stop for all Visitors. I once punched Ali on the shoulder while he was waiting for his ride outsite of the Bank where I worked (it was late in his career and I was ready to DUCK !!). I just stood there talking to him one-on-one because no one else knew he was there. He is juat wise and peaceful in person as he appears on TV.

It’s amazing how the mighty Wulitzer works – Newsweek, now WaPo, of course Fox et al
Then the big offensive by BushCo to reposition the war in Iraq and its longed for war in Iran as a fight against Hitler and the Nazis while branding critics as misguided traitors.
Talk about fascism – it still amazes me how the MSM falls into lockstep (goose step?) – who needs an ad agency or PR firm when you’ve got Newsweek and WaPo “validating” your lies
ppp, I’m sorry for your loss. Don’t shortcut the grief process – your friend deserves the whole path and so do you. Namaste.
Christy, if you can stand one more suggestion about Peanut ears: Get thee to a health food store and find garlic and mullein oil drops. Apply warmed to affected ear. Thank goddess my boy only had two in his life – heating pad and this ped.-recommended oil took care of them. The bitch about antibiotics is that the more you take, the less effective they become.
In the good news can be bad news department, the Dem controlled legislature in CA has proposed some rugged environmental action re: global warming and Ahnie’s reaping the benefits by agreeing with them. He is also backing raising the min wage and allowing the state to beg for discounts on prescription drugs. Not his proposals, mind you, but his publicity nonetheless. Phooey.
Hi,
This is about peanut and ear infection. Please,
ask the pediatrician if peanut could be allergic to milk. I have a daughter that had
surgery set up to put tubes in the ears when
she was 8 mos.old. Upon suggestion of my gen.
practician I suspended milk, she got better,
never needed surgery and grew up on soy milk,
rice milk and natural juices. Now in her 20’s
she outgrew the allergy. Hope things are this
simple with peanut. Good luck, Cris
Christy, my son had numerous ear infections that miraculously went away after we had tubes inserted in his ears. The other thing that eliminating the ear infections did was it made it easier for him to hear and assisted him in development of his language skills. I am so glad that we did it. He is now starting his sophomore year in college and doing well academically and athletically.
Anyway, it’s something to consider.
I’m probably EPU’d, but I wanted to say that I’m hoping Peanut’s feeling much better. Sometimes the best medicine is a blankie, a good book, and Mommy.
