If you are issued a form invitation in error, and are informed privately of the error, pushing publicly to be included anyway where you know you are not welcomed is…well…rather pathetic. Enter Joe Lieberman: (via New Times Live)
The task fell on the shoulders of First Selectman Herb Rosenthal, a Democrat, to contact Lieberman and tell him he wasn’t welcome."I contacted Lieberman’s people and told them it would be embarrassing for me and other Democratic town officials if he marched with us," Rosenthal said Thursday. "I and the Democratic Town Committee don’t want to give the wrong idea that we are embracing his independent candidacy."
Lieberman is running as an independent to retain his U.S. Senate seat after being defeated in the Democratic primary by challenger Ned Lamont.
"Ned Lamont will be joining us in the parade," said Chris McArdle of the Newtown DTC. "As our party’s nominated candidate for senator, he enjoys the full support of the Democratic Town Committee."
Newtown has the largest Labor Day Parade in the state and it traditionally draws a cadre of politicians. Among the Democrats expected are State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Lt. Gov. Kevin Sullivan and Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz.
Meanwhile, Lieberman’s camp is bristling with what it considers an insult.
Dan Gerstein, Lieberman’s communications director, said Thursday that Rosenthal is backpedaling now on what his real statement to Lieberman was regarding his presence at the parade."Mr. Rosenthal told the senator that he was not invited, period," Gerstein said. "It was his intent to tell us that the senator was not welcome at the parade at all. He (Rosenthal) has since changed his story to say he was just dis-inviting the senator from marching with the Democrats."
Not true, Rosenthal said.
Here’s the full scoop: Gerstein is being less-than-truthful. Again. Lieberman has been told by the parade committee folks that he is more than welcome to march in the parade, simply that he is not invited to march with Democrats in the parade — as he is running as Connecticut for Lieberman candidate, and was the loser of the Democratic primary.
Deweese said she has had to be "forceful" with Lieberman’s office to make it clear that there will be no large distance separating Lieberman’s cadre and the Democrats marching in the parade."Senator Lieberman is a good man," Deweese said. "But I told him the tasteful thing is to come and line up where I tell him to. And he was OK with that."
Neither the Newton parade committee nor the Newtown DTC made this a public issue — Turncoat Joe and his mouthpiece did. Why? Because Lieberman’s big fat ego is bruised.
You know how many times Lieberman has marched in this parade? One other time in the nine years that the current Selectman has been running things — and the one other time was right before the 2000 election, when he needed something from the voters there. Coincidence that he’s marching for only the second time this year — when he also is trying to gin up some votes? I think not.
From the Newtown Bee:
"By marching with members of the DTC and invited Democratic candidates and state leaders, it would give the impression that we support his candidacy," said Mr Rosenthal when asked about the issue late Wednesday.
"I told him through his office, that as a duly elected Democratic official, he’s putting me in an uncomfortable, almost embarrassing position. We have a duly elected candidate, who was endorsed by a historic turnout of state Democrats in the recent primary. I don’t have to march with [Sen Lieberman], the DTC doesn’t have to march with him, so why would he want to make it look like he’s in good graces with the Democratic Party?" Mr Rosenthal continued. "He is not in good graces with state Democrats."…
"He’s only come to the parade once before. He’s not coming here this year as the sitting US Senator, he’s coming because he’s a candidate in the fall election," Mr Rosenthal said. Mr Rosenthal said he would take issue with any candidate who failed to be endorsed at the statewide convention, who opted to force a primary, and then upon losing, continued to mount a full-scale campaign by petition for the general election. "He was privately and publicly asked not to run by many state Democrats, and decided to run anyway even after he lost the primary. Philosophically, I have a problem with that," Mr Rosenthal said. "And I’m not going to reward that behavior by marching beside him on Labor Day."
Take the hint Joe. As if being the loser of the state Democratic primary wasn’t enough of a heads up, state Democrats have had more than enough of the whining and the campaigning with Republicans, using the Karl Rove playbook to smear Democratic candidates across the state – and they aren’t going to hand you a lollipop just because you demand one. As the mother of a three-year-old, I can tell you that rewarding the whining only gets you a lot more whining. And it’s about time that you, as a 60-some year old man, learned the meaning of "no."
Did you think that your poor behavior would earn you no consequences? You have been in the Beltway Bubble far too long, if so.
Face it, Joe — you got the invitation by mistake, and the only person making a big deal out of this is you. And having your lobbyist-turned-spokesperson float out the tired "politics as usual" flack about your refusal to accept the reality that you LOST the Democratic primary…and that state Democrats are fed up with your immature tantrums. You are a candidate in a party named after yourself, you don’t get special treatment just because you stamp around and demand it…stop taking behavioral cues from George Bush and Dick Cheney and grow up.
They just aren’t that into you.

I got a zero two days in a row. I must be on some kind of streak
HoJo!
It’s still amazing the degree to which Lieberman has bought into his own manufactured legend. Really, Joe, you were never as beloved by the people as you believe. Get over yourself and move along. These fellow politicians your trying to hang with are Democrats, not Lieberman-for-Connecticuts.
Reddhedd
I love the part about “as the mother of a 3 year old I can tell you..”
That’s just what he sounds like. We have a saying in my house “No doesn’t mean the start of the discusssion, no means no”
Not that it ever stops littleprop from continuing the pleading, she is a lwayer’s daughter after all, but it clearly signals that the pleading is only so she can get her position on record and live to plead another day.
This is great stuff. Samantha Bee was right: Joenertia is a stalker.
Dan Gerstein wears a French maid outfit.
I guess ol’ Joe should have thought about that before he had his independent primary…
Jeepers. By his own staffer’s admission, the man wasn’t “home” to visit for six years…but now he absolutely MUST walk with Democratic Party members this weekend?
I’d like to see somebody get smart and put the Kiss Float right behind Mr. WATB…or put the Democratic Party first, the Kiss Float, and then WATB right behind it.
In fact, if the parade committee got smart, they’d fax WATB’s office a copy of the parade line up showing the Float just in front or just behind him…and I’ll bet he’s a no-show, just like he has been for the last six years.
Lieberman and his sidekick Igor sure are a pathetic duo. Obscurity, or off-broadway, here they come!
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly vote Ned’s way
Netroots turn overnight to power
Blossoming even as we gaze
Sideshow Joe!
However, it’s a tasteful outfit. Nice lace and all that.
Yes, please, bring the KISS float!
Well, maybe instead of marching in the parade, he could ride on the Kiss Float.

“Live to plead another day.” That about sums up the Lieberman Legacy.
Yes, Joe and Bushboy could both ride the Kiss float, making out.
reality check. reality check. Senator Joe Lieberman to the white courtesy telephone…………
(too bad his faddah didn’t get a phone call……………….)

LOL with both of you. The Kid is clearly a preacher’s son, and will lament the perceived injustice of it all well after the Word has been handed down from on high (so to speak), but No has to mean no. He’s starting to figure that out.
Hear the word of the Party, Joe: “Thus sayeth the Dems: you lost.”
beemer @ 14
Yeah, but don’t tip off Gerstein. then they can arrive to see it and decide to walk the gauntlet of ridicule or blow the planned event time. (maybe vendors could sell tomatoes to throw if he decides to march)
and of course, Redd, another bullseye, well focused, as usual. it’s really amazing how you do it.
Bilge @

That’s a great idea. He could ride on the float and throw Hershey’s Kisses to the crowd.
Surprise, surprise, surprise!
With the Dems from CT standing up to the dog whistle-like whinging Joe has been putting out, the effort to have a no-confidence on Rummy and the general growth of spines in the Democratic party, I get a whiff of change in the air.
Now if we could only slap some sense into the sandbaggers — I’m looking at you Emmanual and Schumer — and get them on board, we may be able to take on the Republicans and stand toe to toe with them. The feeling of winning is nice, more of this please…
BQ: Tomatoes? Tomatoes? Is this dignified for a US Senator? Snark
Ooh, I hope he shows up. And people boo him. And perhaps pelt him with garbage.
Maybe that would give him the clue he needs.

I LOVE your comment about getting her position on record. I’m the mother of two wonderful sons – good Democrats both, one’s a paid staffer at the DNC – and have always found that a firm, cheerful “no” never hurt any child. And, the more you say “no” to a little kid, the less you’ll have to say it to a big kid.
Keep up the good work!
OT — Maybe it’s more obvious what’s going on with the deluge of right-wing propaganda re: Armitage. Jane, maybe you can call Isikoff and see if you can get an advance copy of the book for yourself and EW?
What if there’s something else more important in the book they don’t want us to read? Wouldn’t they do their best to downplay the book by saying it’s a non-story?
Look what just happened with KO’s book, after all. Heh. Number 19 this morning on Amazon’s best seller list…
I’d sure hate to see that happen with Isikoff’s book if there was something in it that Rover doesn’t want us to see.
Leiberman should be ashamed .
Good morning Christy and thanks for the posts this morning– still trying to catch up! Hope little Fiona feels better soon– best wishes.
umm, that picture. Did Lynne and Hadassah get together and plan the outfits so the two goons match in more than just failed policy and warmongering?
If the CFL Party ever gets a decent website up and running, perhaps Gerstein could start a blog. Call it My Right Nutmeg. With the Party’s slogan on the banner, of course. “Joe Lieberman: An Old Whine in a New Bottle.” As for the float, if the parade organizers won’t let it in, nothing stops the Connecticut bloggers from handing out kiss buttons all along the route. Heh.
I don’t want to gloat, but Keith’s book is at #19 on the Amazon sales ranking this morning! (Bill O’Reilly also has a book coming out in September…it’s at #1,287 mwahahaha).
Oh who am I kidding, I do wanna gloat!! :)
If he tries to march with the Democrats have him arrested for trespassing!
This creep has got to be smacked around.
Repeatedly and hard.
liz @ 29
“Should” is the operative word. Somebody (I’m looking at you, Dan Gerstein!) seems to have persuaded Holy Joe that acting like a petulant spoiled brat is going to encourage people to vote for him. Speaking for myself, it convinces me that he can’t be kicked out of his cushy job soon enough.
Alaska Legislative offices FBI search update:
Not much new to add from my posts at late and late, late night. The targets at this time seem to be Veco, an oilfield support company heavily invested in supporting GOP candidates here, implicated in tough lobbying tactics on energy legislation; and state Senate President Ben Stevens, son of Ted “toobz” Stevens. Ben has raked in 100s of thousands of $ in the past few years lobbying for Veco while serving and rapidly advancing in the Alaska senate.
The FBI and Veco are expected to make statements by noon. Ben Stevens hates the press and the feelings are fairly mutual. The exception is a faux press outlet called “Voice of the Tmes” which is the highly derided relic of The Anchorage Times, the conservative newspaper bought out about eleven years ago by the Anchorage Daily News.
As part of the buyout of the Times, the News agreed to provide the former paper the half page on the upper fold of the right-hand side of the editorial pages for five years. They’ve extended that agreement twice now.The VotT uses three or four local wingnut columnists and a few nationally syndicated wingnuts – Charles Krauthammer and Walter Williams, for example – to espouse their Norquistesque vision of government. The local VotT editors are paid both directly and indirectly by Veco.
Right now, a local AM morning right wing talk show is being hosted by Paul Jenkins, a Veco employee who is the chief spokesperson in Alaska media for the Veco development mindset. I’m going to try to get a call in within the next hour.

Yes we will leave them in the cans.
Holy shit! What’s this editorial in the WaPo about Wilson. The last graf is the most absurd horseshit I’ve ever seen grace a major daily:
I don’t believe that Wilson ever claimed sure knowledge that his Niger report was read by higher-ups. And he didn’t claim to debumk the Yellowcake claims: he confirmed their debunking. What’s most appalling is that nobody had enough reason to wonder about his fitness for mission, certainly not enough to go looking at his wife– he was a fucking Africa expert. So Wilson outed his wife by writing the Op-Ed, eh? Astounding stupidity. Did Vicky Toensing write this?
-=-
“Nevertheless, it now appears that the person most responsible for the end of Ms. Plame’s CIA career is Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson chose to go public with an explosive charge, claiming — falsely, as it turned out — that he had debunked reports of Iraqi uranium-shopping in Niger and that his report had circulated to senior administration officials. He ought to have expected that both those officials and journalists such as Mr. Novak would ask why a retired ambassador would have been sent on such a mission and that the answer would point to his wife. He diverted responsibility from himself and his false charges by claiming that President Bush’s closest aides had engaged in an illegal conspiracy. It’s unfortunate that so many people took him seriously.”
Rayne @ 8:34 am
“I’d sure hate to see that happen with Isikoff’s book if there was something in it that Rover doesn’t want us to see.”
What inimical comments are in James Moore’s forthcoming sequel to Bush’s Brain?
I’m going to be covering the parade. Look for video sometime late Monday on my blog.
And I’ll see if I can contact the Kiss float guys about bringing it out of retirement. I love the idea of throwing Hershey’s Kisses to the crowd!

freakdaddy — oh, it’s the old debate about which is better, canned tomatoes that leave a lovely bruise and make a point with a satisfying thud, or rotting tomatoes combined with other sundry spoiled vegetables, that make for a less painfully but absolutely stinky experience on the recipients’ end of the business.
Oh, to have to make the choice of ammo…I think I’d opt for the rotting tomatoes and excess zucchinis launched with a wrist rocket.
Cuke-lear warfare.
What a baby! This is so bush league (snark intended) of him. I expect this kind of behavior on the local level, happens every year at parade time, but really, Boltin’ Joe, you are such a wanker. Whine on at the harvest mooon, Joe baby.

“but if you don’t have the stomach for the job, just speed dial Frist on your cell phone……………..”
Hooray for Mr. Rosenthal for summarizing the truth of Lieberman’s pathetic and dishonest “campaign”.
Mr. Rosenthal’s entire statement, especially the “We have a duly elected candidate, who was endorsed by a historic turnout of state Democrats in the recent primary.” should be sent to every Democratic Senator who’s supporting Whiny Joe for Joe; and to every Democratic Senator who isn’t lending their full support to Ned Lamont.
Loser Lieberman should NOT be in the “good graces” of any Democrat. He should get no rewards for his continuous and despicable undemocratic behaviour.
one of the most thoroughly appetizing fdl pieces i’ve read in a while…. so many gems.
Connecticut Bob @ 39
CT Bob – That float is a media magnet. Get it out of retirement, if you can, and give it a seat on the board of directors. We need it more than ever.
Also, I want to again, er, float an idea that came out of an earlier Christy column and the resultant comments: A cheap, easy protest for parade watchers is to wear coats turned inside out: turncoats. A group of Joe-protesters so attired, perhaps with a big “TURNCOAT JOE” sign, would also likely draw media attention.
I think we should start mailing Joe copies of “He’s Just Not That Into You”. Maybe he’ll get the point.
As for the WaPo Plame editorial today, they continue to cling to the bizarre narrative the Armitage disclosure somehow rules out a White House plot to smear Wilson. Yes, Armitage has a big mouth. But it’s possible for Armitage to have a big mouth AND for Rove and Libby to run around blabbing Plame’s identity to multiple reporters. That’s why there’s a five-count felony indictment against Libby right now.
Connecticut Bob @ 39
The float is retired? That worries me. I worry that we “shot our load” in the primary, and are now exhausted/bored and will move on to other things.
I too needed a respite after primary day, but regret it now. I question whether a full court “what a loser” press might have knocked Joe out. He’s getting a lot of face-time now, and this loser tantrum is gaining credibility, I fear.
Man, I hate that schmuck. We should be focusing all this energy on defeating OTHER republicans, but we can’t. Where’s a wooden stake when you need one?
BTW, Bob, Thanks so much for continuing on w/ Kirby more determined than ever. I’m not inferring that you’re letting up, I just worry that we may lose our citizen activist base.
John Casper @ 47
Yeah, I’ll have my Jelly Repellent with me, just in case!
Every time Cheney croacks his head to explain something a croaked explanation comes out, how true and becoming is that pic. Body language is hell to those in power.
OT – Kyra Philips does Letterman top 10 list about the bathroom incident.
Ed*ard Teller @ 35
Last night, I noted the Veco president’s comments from last year about their political actions being “in self-defense.” It sounded like it could be the stupidest legal theory to be spinning (even a year ahead, when no legal stuff was pressing), ordinary corporate lobbying, or a subtle reference to a shakedown of Veco by a politician or five.
You might want to ask the Veco guy about that quote. Be interesting to see how he spins/answers it . . .
Hugh @ 49
Under Katharine Graham and Ben Bradley the WaPo was an amazing paper doing what our free press should always be doing – questioning authority
Graham’s son and the current editorial staff have turned it into a Washington Times wanna be – it’s heartbreaking to those of us who remember the paper in the 70’s and 80’s
Urban Pirate @ 57
Interesting thought — Zombie Joe, the Loser who Wouldn’t Die. A float? Costumes?
Let’s not forget – this is Bob Woodward’s narrative. I think the editorial is parrotting Woodward’s take on all this – that it’s no big deal, so minor he never thought of coming forward to let Fitz know what he knew. I think, in part, we are seeing Woodward trying to vindicate his horrendous behavior regarding the investigation.
Bob Woodward is a shell of his former self and a BushCo apologist
LIEbercreep is just so incredibly smarmy, a pious, sanctimonious scold. he’s a perfect fit with the repugs. just so fucking oily. it’s like they never matured (emotionally, mentally) after the 7th grade.
Anyone ever eat Cry Baby Tears candy? Perhaps a nice basket of tears for Lieberman?
I agree with Yam at 24. This is a sign that Democrats across the state aren’t going to take Joe’s bullshit anymore. I’ve been shouting at them for five years to FOR GOD’S SAKE GROW A SPINE! A major league collective slap down of Joe is needed. In Connecticut. Fuck Schumer, Emmanuel and all the other power brokers in DC. We will take care of business up here, just like we did on Aug. 8.
Alan Bisbort @ 67
There you go. Just watch out for those Diebolds.
Frank Probst – I agree – been thinking the same thing. Nothing about Armitage changes the other parts of the narrative. No matter what though, in the public’s mind/perception the CM take on what the Armitage revelation means won’t change anything; like Katrina – there is no good there for TEAM LOSER.

And what about Dodd? He’s still off the reservation, moaning and groaning about what a good friend Lieberman is and how the CT Dems made a mistake. Dodd’s been in Ireland the past few weeks, but should be home now.
I don’t care if he & Joey are friends. Dodd is an elected Dem rep and he needs to respect the will of CT Dem voters. Most professionals can separate the personal from the professional. Suck it up Dodd and do the right thing. Your political career hangs in the balance.
And good luck running for President as you alienate the grass roots of the Dem party.
EPU at 73 — thought you’d enjoy that. *g*
Ed*ard, found this tidbit of an update over at TPM:
And how does his father Ted fit into all this? He’s named as the senator who put the secret hold on the federal spending database bill, in one of your updates it was mentioned an investigation went on for 18 months with son Ben, what is Ted hiding about what he knows about Veco? I know this is basically two different issues but there must be a tie in for Stevens to fight the database bill so hard that has more to do than the excuse of being pissed at Coburn for blocking his bridge to nowhere. He’s known all along his son was under investigation. Wondering what federal spending would be involved that Stevens is trying to block from discovery and protect his son in the process.

You are 2/3 of the way there. March of Dimes, who knows a thing or two about pregnancy difficulties, estimates that 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage if you include the first month. Which, if the fundies are going to say that birth control causes abortions in an unimplanted egg, I think we can safely include first month miscarriages.
So I see your 150,000 and raise you 75,000 for a new total of 225,000.
Out of respect to our first selectman (Herb Rosenthal) the KISS float is also not invited. Ned Lamont’s scheduler asked about the float and my husband (as a member of the DTC) asked Herb what he thought about that. He felt it wouldn’t be appropriate. Since Herb has been absolutely upstanding on the Lieberman issue I would hope that the float doesn’t show up.
Don’t get me wrong. I think the KISS float is a stroke of genius. Just not this time. Hope you all understand.

Christy,
We had that same sequence with our older child when she was a toddler. Stay on top of it and don’t worry – she-ll be OK, and so will you.
AK update:
The morning traffic rightwingnut AM talk shows are befuddled. I just called Paul Jenkins and asked him a sequence of questions regarding his pay as a commentator for the Veco-owned “Voice of the Times.” Veco, Paul’s employer, is named in all the search warrants issued to the legislators yesterday.
my questions and his answers (sometimes paraphrased):
1. q: How are the Voice of the Times editors and commentators paid?
a: by Veco
2. q: Does Jenkins have another job with Veco?
a: no
3. q: Would he consider having Republican maverick (in other words – honest Republican) Ray Metcalfe on his radio show? (Metcalfe has been probing Veco and other Republiican-based corruption for years).
a: that might be interesting (sounds like a “no” to me).
4: q: Have you discussed the FBI raid with any of the three Veco officers mentioned in the search warrents?
a: no
Paul also says he’s not involved in the expected Veco press release either. Not surprising – time for really good lawyers not really good liars.
Overall polite exchange. I hope Paul is careful. I don’t like him at all, but he’s too funny to read and listen to for me to wish him away.
Christy, has Peanut’s dr ever mentioned putting tubes in her ears?

Bookwoman, understood entirely, all politics are local. We’ve had our share of histrionics over parades in my own hometown (gah).
But I’m sure the Kiss Float’s drive could not be banned from being in the general vicinity, yes? Being a licensed vehicle, public venue, etc.

Kathryn at 86 — this is only the fifth ear infection that she has ever gotten in the whole of her three years, so we’ve never discussed tubes. She does well with the antibiotics. But it seems like, at least the last few months, she’s had more than her share of sinus issues for some reason. She’s never had a problem with milk or yogurt, but perhaps it’s time to do a little checking on that. In the meantime, her daddy is reading her a story and, if we are lucky, she’ll be napping shortly.

shez @ #76:
I doubt Ted did the hold to protect Ben. From talks with friends yesterday and early this morning, Ben has known for more than two months something might be coming down. Veco doesn’t do much business with the Feds, nor are they a Federal-level lobbying group of any significance.
Ben, President of the Alaska Senate, announced in the early summer that he is not going to stand for his seat this November, stating a wish to “spend more time with my family.”
I’m hoping that Duke Cunningham will soon be part of Ben’s greater family.

I’m confused here — what’s the Lamont scheduler doing booking the KISS float’s appearances? Absolutely, the Lamont campaign should respect the wishes of the DTC — just as should RGJoe. But the float — unless it’s now part of the Lamont campaign — should be an independent agent. Conflating the float with the campaign is a mistake.
As illustrated by the scheduler, being polite and respectful to the DTC, agreeing that the float won’t show up for the parade.

BTW, it was so nice of you to use my Swallowtail pic. I DID catch that. :)

Would it be too difficult to have a zombie Joe staggering around the parade?
Afternoon. My misc. comments:
1. And so, now the Traitor wants to smell up a Labor Day Parade. Whatever grief comes his way shall be richly deserved. Pour it on, nutmeg folk.
2. I’ll slightly disagree with some who chastise Dodd. You know, I watched a film clip of him at the assembly a day after the primary. Mr. Lamont was there. Dodd has spoke of how LiarMan is an old friend. I think it’s true, and I think LiarMan’s acts tear Dodd up. Ms. Hamsher reports that Dodd even tried to chat with LiarMan at his hotel. Coward LiarMan wouldn’t even answer the door. Of ALL the folks from LiarMan’s past, I’m willing to give Dodd a slight pass. Dodd has spoken strong for Lamont, and tried to quietly turn LiarMan around. I don’t know how much more I can ask from a man who’s torn by the acts of someone who truly has been a long, long friend. He’s the only one I’m willing to give a slight pass to. Others disagree…I can see their point as well.
3. Sheriff, egregious, and the grand fetus adventure: ya’ll ever looked into the gay issue in Iran? How do the ayatollahs feel about gay folk? Pretty negative, I’d guess. So if we bomb Iran, the fundies are destroying their greatest ally in their fight against evil, sinful gays. All fundies should praise Iran, not bury them! Just a thought.
Ghostman
this weekend is the calm before the u.s. political storm. we should all make this a relaxing weekend (with extra thoughts of healing for Redd and her peanut) and reflect on our need to stay on the alert, to give all we can to the cause we hold dear. after this weekend we need to go all out.
ten weeks and history will be made, one way or another. we would do well not to waste energy on expecting anybody to help us, especially on people who should help and don’t. we’ll probably be dealt some really tough blows along the way but nothing like that really matters if we keep getting up and moving forward. no matter what. not the DLC, or Diebold machines or the Supreme Court and certainly not the Mighty Wurlitzer.
i’m not going to have patience with the nay sayers and anybody that wants to give up. and if things don’t go our way on november 7th i’m still going to press on. i don’t know about anybody else but that’s what i’m going to do. it just doesn’t seem right to do anything less.
TeddySanFran @ 98
Wow, that’s a good point. Bookwoman, are you saying that Ned’s scheduler said she had something to do with the float? Because if she said that, she is talking out her ass; she has absolutely nothing to do with the float and where it does and doesn’t go. She schedules Ned’s appearances, not the float’s.
I need to know exactly what you heard about that. Thanks.

It’s been a tough year for sinuses for my wife. She’s been doing quite a bit of rinsing. Is it possible that Peanut is having some allergies and her ears aren’t taking it well?
astralplame @ 102
He could lurch at the parade watchers, saying “Brrrrraaaaiiiinnnssss!!!” hehe.
‘Morning.
And of course defeating Lieberman is not the only game in town (although an important one, as he could end up jumping parties to the Republicans if Lieberman is elected, the real Democrats get only 50 seats, and both the D’s and R’s come asking Wallflower Joe to dance at the same time. (Joe’s payment then is that he gets his pick of a committee chair with whichever party he seduces, in that scenario.)
So those other races are important also. The current lineup is:
109th Congress (2005-2007)
Majority Party: Republican (55 seats)
Minority Party: Democrat (44 seats)
Other Parties: Independent (1 seat)
Total Seats: 100
The “I” is, of course, Vermont U.S. Senator Jim Jeffords, who has caucused with the Democrats, but he is retiring. He is likely to be replaced by another D-type I, Rep. Bernie Sanders. So we count that one as a safe D seat.
So the D’s have, effectively, 45 and need 51 to take back the Senate. That appears to be a needed increase of 6 (if we hold all current D/I seats). An increase of 5 doesn’t cut it, because a 50-50 Senate gets organized by the R’s, when Dick Cheney casts the tie-breaking votes.
But is an increase of 6 enough? Well, that’s not actually enough either if we lose one of the current D votes (Lieberman) due to back-seat seduction maneuvers with the R’s.
As for some of the other seats where we need to shift things to blue:
This news from USA Today, via http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..11217/3918
There’s some good news in there, and some we-need-to-work-our-little-patooties-off news as well. And there are other seats that we need to turn from Red to blue-D.

SharonW – I think you should take solace. First, it has nothing to do with the actual charges against Scooter. Second, and I think more importantly, it doesn’t mean that Scooter, with others (i.e. Cheney, Rover (who I believe is cooperating) et al.) didn’t have their own conspiracy going on independent of what Armitage did.
Another interesting Plame point to consider is that I believe I read someplace that Rover is not a part of the Plame suit – even as a witness. If that is true, my guess is that he is not b/c Fitz asked them not to. I don’t know that that is true, but I can’t think of a better reason as to why Rover would not be, at the minimum, witness, let alone a defendant.
nice WaPoO chatz Q, angie! way to get the meme out there, grrl!
still waiting on Broder to pick one of mine. but my tone gets nasty with him quick — he’s picking on my Congresswoman for her management abilities! — and so I doubt mine’ll get chosen.
EPU at 120 — No, Rove is a named defendant. He’s not listed as a witness for Fitzgerald for the criminal trial of Libby. If he is called, Libby will have to do it — leaving Rove open to Cross-exam by Fitzgerald, which, frankly, would be preferable, so it likely won’t happen unless Libby is desperate. But Libby, Rove and Cheney are the three named defendants in the Libby civil suit thus far, with an additional number of un-named placeholders to be added at a later date.
CT Bob @ 93 and others who responded to my Kiss float comment @83:
ARRRGGGGGGHHHHh is the correct response. I guess there really is no way the float could be banned from the vicinity of the parade. You never heard this from me, but the parade route goes down Main Street at the corner of Currituck Rd. on to a left at Glover and then onto Queen Street. The parade disperses at that point. I’m just sayin’…..

Hi Bookwoman, glad you’re still here, could you please clarify that there was a conversation with the Lamont scheduler about the KISS float, perhaps privately with CT-Bob or on his blog? No one wants to disrupt y’all’s parade, but there’s a larger issue going forward that needs to be resolved: is the float an independent agent or a part of the Lamont campaign?
I hope you have a wonderful parade!!

I keep some in the fridge; can find it in tablets or powdered form. The powder is easily sprinkled into applesauce or liquids.
We’ve had “rebound” problems here after antibiotics, especially with my daughter, hence the experience with the probiotics.

Amazing video footage of Rep Tim Ryan of Ohio, as he ‘gives it’ to Bush ‘good style’.
Also, footage of Rocky Anderson, Mayor of Salt Lake City doing the same.
Rayne at 132 — thanks. I’m not cutting back on yogurt while she’s sick. It’s the one reliable food that she loves, and we feed her a whole milk organic variety to pump up the calories for her a bit (She’s a string bean, like I used to be as a kid.) But I appreciate the heads up on the probiotics powder form…good to know.
It’s weird, because she was really, really healthy the last year or so — no health issues after her early bout with pneumonia as a wee girlie at 9 months (don’t ask, grandma’s, Thanksgiving, dragged around to see every person in the known universe…’nough said). But she’s started picking up infections and such as she’s started preschool this March. I was warned this would happen, but I had NO idea until now how frequently we’d be dealing with it. Better to get through all of this now before kindergarten, I suppose, but it really sucks as a parent to watch your peanut go through this.
Just thinking out loud . . . .
At FDL, we spend a great deal of time dealing with Wallflower Joe, but by comparison a much smaller amount dealing with R Senators who need to go down (although some time on Allen, Burns, and Chaffe, and a little bit on Santorum). But all the posts about R’s taken together just barely add up to the number focusing on Turncoat Joe.
Is it because there are no good stories about the other R campaigns?
It’s fun, of course, and important to get Ned elected as a real D. But the Senate needs 51 solid D’s and we have only 45 (43 1 Joe) at present. Defeating Joe with Ned makes it 44 1-45 still. And with that, nothing changes.
In short, don’t we need to get the same level of energy going on incumbent R Senators where we can make a difference?
(Yes, I know and appreciate the Act Blue posts, which are important (and make me keep opening my checkbook), but they are primarily Representatives, and they are maybe once per week.)
I know that FDL is not primarily a campaign site for taking back the Senate. When I came aboard, it was for the Plameology. I’m happy to follow it wherever it leads.
But I’m just askin’ about whether there are juicy and motivating stories about several of the other sitting R’s.
Bookwoman @ 83
I kind of agree – this is about promoting Lamont and introducing him to people who haven’t met him before – I think it will be more devastating for Lieberman to be ignored and excluded from the Dem contingent (but Hershey’s kisses sound good)
Different events and different stages of a campaign require different tactics. I still think the KISS float has a huge role to play. But the Newtown Labor Day parade is a family oriented, “olde tyme” event and I think the less controversy the better.
Just my opinion.
Prof– Jane did a piece on George Allen Wednesday evening– there’s plenty of juice there.
TeddySanFran@99
The KISS float was such a big deal prior to the primary that, when the Lamont scheduler contacted my husband (who is the parade contact) she was anxious to include the float. That’s when the first selectman was asked his opinion, which was a “no”. I hope this is a little clarification.

I was not questioning what FDL’s main team (Redd, Jane, Pachutec, TRex, some others) are doing at the main-posting level.
I was wondering why the rest of us in the Comments aren’t feeding in juicy information about some of the other R Senators who need to be defeated. And I was truly wondering, which is different from asking questions for merely rhetorical reasons.

It sure would be nice for The Kiss float to make an appearance, even if they can’t get in the parade. I like the idea of them throwing chocolate kisses.
Even better. Show up at the parade yourself, and shower chocolate kisses on Lamont and Lieberman. Maybe throw them a bit harder at Lieberman. And booo like your life depends on it.

Been thinking about this quote for awhile now…
and what REALLY bugs me about it, is: Who is the ‘we’ referring to ?
We, we, we. It’s formulaic, in a trinary contractual fashion, so, who does it represent, who said this to Ron Suskind ?
Often this Rovian tactic, so ably demonstrated by Gerstein and Lieberman of lie, distort, and move on, reflects the same kind of ethos as the person Suskind is quoting.
This ‘ethos’ has to be challenged in a very public and effective way.

My two cents on the Kiss Float… I think someone should contact the Lamont campaign and ask them what they want. And then respect their wishes. Even though it’s legal to have the float in the vicinity, if the Lamont folks don’t want it to appear… end of story.
Of course, handing out wax lips with a big-ole kiss button affixed wouldn’t be a bad thing, would it?

Does the Kiss float motivate the D base more, pulling some of the D’s who voted for Lieberman to the Lamont side?
I am guessing that it may do some of that and may get some independents to think twice.
But for the general election, does it have the same impact?
Are there other memes that are equally powerful?
Again, my question is not a statement. It is truly a question.
If we look at Virginia, is there much chance that Allen will get any non-white votes? If so, emphasizing the macaca and other slurs (including the wink) may help peel off those votes. And it may help motivate the D base to GOTV.
Look at Montana. Are we sure that Burns is doing harm to his election chances by his own racist remarks? Of course, we have to criticize them. But maybe he is doing them quite intentionally to send certain signals to part of his base.
Same for Allen?
How is Joe Lieberman looking for a base now (mostly R’s) and are there ways we can intervene with that effort? Maybe being close to Bush will actually help his chances with his new Republican base. Or maybe not, as we see Rep. Shays shying away from the war.
And again, I ask about other states where we might pick up our majority.
I could have sworn I saw some good decent polling info on Carter/Ensign as well.
If the Kiss Float is retiring, I think it’s time for a Cheney Float. Cheney in his earflap hat, shotgun aiming wildly to and fro,
Vote for Lieberman (quack quack) He believes in me (quack quack) Final Thoes (quack quack) Lieberman Knows where the WMDS are (quack quack) Rush(quack), Coulter(quack), Hannity(quack) – we all agree, Connecticut for Lieberman – QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK
quack=that Burgess Meredith as Penquin sound Stewart makes when he does a Cheney.

Bookwoman’s first comment on this was to relay that the float was “not invited.” That’s not the same as “banned” and I don’t see that it implies the float being a formal part of the campaign, or under their control.
The Lamont campaign has shown they really know what they’re doing, so if they think this event would be better handled as purely pro-Lamont, I’m inclined to trust them and not take it as anything negative about the Float.

op99:
Yeah, I agree. I’m just thinking that any hijinks will still have the appearance of a Lamont campaign association and it might be the respectful thing to discuss it with them, since they already put out an inquiry directly to the parade committee and were turned down (if I’m understanding correctly) they would probably like to be seen as abiding by that decision.
Show how different they are than WATB Lieberman who can’t take no for an answer. Well, whatever happens I’m sure it’ll be fine…
Of course Schumer doesn’t He thinks we’re stupid.
Prof @ 141
Prof, I appreciate the way you couched your concerns. As far as I am concerned that’s on all of us. While FDL is many things, it is also a learning community. It took a tremendous investment from Jane mostly, for “us” to be as fluent wrt CT politics as we are. It’s not going to happen with any other campaign to that degree before November 7. That’s nobody’s fault, it’s just a consequence of FDL’s cumulative learning curve. In so far as there are strong similarities between all the races, as far as some of the issues are concerned, CT was an excellent foundation.
I don’t think Jane, Christy, Pach, TRex, and the other posters can just drop their current plans and learn another race. It’s easy to blog from a distance about a race, the poll numbers, etc, but the altitude usually means those posts don’t connect with who we are, as much as what we’re getting.
I guess I would invite commenters who know about races in different parts of the country to link to articles about them and write about them in the comments section. I think where FDL might still be able to have some impact would be on the local press coverage, but I could be wrong about that. I’m not sure how much we impacted the CT press and how much was just a well-run primary campaign. If FDLers begin to get interested, it will become apparent and there will be posts about that race.
The only people who really know in depth about what’s going on, are working in the campaigns, and they probably don’t have time to prepare a post that would convey it to us or submit to an interview from Jane, Christy….
IMO, every media outlet in the nation lines up to the right of the New York Times and the WaPo. I think were FDL, Kos, and others have their greatest impact is keeping those two from collapsing into the right. The more we push them away from the right, back towards the center, the more the rest of the political reporters around the country will follow.

Prof;
I think the chances for Allen getting those votes were a lot better pre macaca and especially now that Allen is in the news for the Thurgood Marshall award, turn down etc. Prior to this, the D base had sour grapes re Webb over their guy Harris Miller losing the primary and because of Webb’s one time statements regarding affirmative action. Hopefully, now those who were stuck on those issues can get some perspective and GOTV .

I think I understand what your talking about Prof. My states (Tennessee) senate race doesn’t include a sitting senator running for reelection but there is alot of interest in it. Are you looking for what’s happening on the ground here?
Prof @ 170
Allen sends plenty of dog-whistle signals to his racist base, but he screwed up this one because he did it out loud in a way that everyone could understand. Given the unsubtlety and his reputation for not being particularly bright, I don’t think that was intentional, and if it was, it backfired big time.
I don’t think Allen was ever going to get any of the African-American vote, but I would think he previously had quite a bit of support from the non-white business community. If he’d made an ugly anti-black remark, it wouldn’t have lost him any black voters (though it might well have hurt him with “soccer moms,” who the Republicans perpetually work to convince that they care about poor black people, even if they never do anything for them), but this conveyed to a larger group that he really doesn’t consider anyone nonwhite to be a “real” Virginian.
We have made some progress in this country. The regressives have to disguise their racist appeals; they can no longer openly run on racial slurs. When they do, it’s always a mistake.

Feel sorry for you, it’s tough to have a nexus of food issues with illness. The older child here was always very good about foods, but she had relatively few ear infections. The little guy, though, has been an unfortunate pain in the keister when it comes to being picky about foods — and he had the most ear infections, making solutions challenging. Fortunately, he actually likes and asks for soy milk (vanilla only, though), has been a solution when we needed to get something in him. Chocolate smoothies made with tofu and vanilla soymilk are a popular item when he’s not feeling well, and even when he is.
Picky-eater little guy quit eating green veggies at 9 months, wouldn’t touch them for nearly 18 months. Drove us crazy; his sister’s favorite vegetable was broccoli, would eat any vegetable, but not Mr. Picky. He’s coming around slowly, though; 7 years later he’s eating broccoli (trees only, though, he says, not stems), green beans (but not french cut), salads. There’s hope for him yet.

Research, fact checking, follow through – such a pre-9/11 approach. Bet she hasn’t even had her first botox yet. ;)
It is good to see it and to see NYT give her the spotlight.
Oh man, look at those ties! They’re almost identical, and if I’m not mistaken, they’re patterned to hypnotize us. If I recall correctly, these ‘ties’ were commonly sold in the 70s and 80s by mail order on the back cover of comic books, or you could get them for 500 Bazooka Joe comics and $0.75 for S&H. Hmmmm, very curious.
OT was this posted before?
Old message, new style
Redshift, I’ve spoken with plenty of African American state employees who say they will vote for Allen because of what he did while he was Governor. Interestingly, when I ask what exactly it is that he did, nobody has come up with any specifics.
Dru, if as I suspect you’re European American, they probably think you are a plant sent by Felix.
You know what’s going to happen, don’t you? Joe will show up, he will be booed, and Gagstein will turn it into a Lamont-orchestrated attack. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if they hired people to boo Lieberman so they could do that. The Lamont people need to pay close attention to those wearing Lamont stuff to make sure that any negative behavior is stopped and, if possible, that the person boo-ing is identified. I would suggest lots of camcorders, camera phones, etc. to capture any funny stuff.
As for Bush and his latest campaign, I wish they would spend as much time on actually working to solve these problems as they do on devising new and diabolical rhetoric to indoctrinate the masses.
John Casper -your suspicions are only 1/2 right! The other 1/2 will have to remain a mystery for now.

Ooop. op99, I know what you intended — and, grrrl, you bet’ hope Jane does too!
Dru @ 202
Wow! I never would have guessed that. I’ve lived here all my life, and I will never understand this state…
ooh, intrigue right here at FireDogLake!
Seriously, though, Allen has pretended to be someone else for a looong time now and with the help of the Republican party. He opened his own mouth on videotape and denigrated a Virginian and an American purely because the gent had dark skin and because he thought he could get away with it in that crowd. His hubris is staggering.
The naked truth will hopefully set folks free.
Whew! Glad your edit function works, op99!
lotus, huh?
hi lotus ;)

A great editorial in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today. Worth reading – it will make a nice start to your weekend.

I never would have guessed it either (and I’ve lived here my whole life except 7 years in CT.) Who knew campaigning for Webb would be such an education? Anyway, this was the feedback pre-macaca, so hopefully people’s positions will change accordingly.
Hey Aunt Angie- congratulations.
Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy! Really? oh boy.
The float worked pre-primary because it delivered a message, namely that Lieberman was locked in a deadly embrace with Bush — same message as delivered by an early Hillsman ad. There is sufficient anti-Bush sentiment among Democrats to make that a message that delivered up many Dem votes.
Now the situation is different — Lamont needs Independent and possibly some Progressive Republican votes, and that demographic in the Democratic registered voters Lieberman still has is mostly the white Ethnic Working Class, mostly Catholic — many of whom may have pulled a lever or two for Reagan. The symbols and message need to change to capture these new targets.
I do favor continued use of some irony and humor, but the things that worked for the primary may not be what will seem mildly humorous to this new necessary audience. More to the point, it is an end of summer festival, people are interested in something that makes them lightly laugh, not be too serious. Better to try something that lightly celebrates Ned Lamont, (Big Stickers saying Ned, Newtown’s new Hero) and hand them out along the parade route. — and don’t forget the Union Bug.
Hey, dahlin’s!
FDL’s and my computers aren’t on good terms today (it’s not just me, so no worries). Anyhow, everything I say goes into mod, and it’ll take a few minutes for y’all to see this, but

op99, when I first saw your 206, your observation about Condi seemed to apply to Jane. But then you (or somebody) got it re-arranged correctly, and I went WHEW!

Tell you what, if my Refresh Browser button were physical, po’ thang’d be worn to a nub by now.
I think Gerty Gersteins’ whining is a backdoor attempt to justify Joe Lieberman not showing up at the parade at all. If he does show up he’s likely to face public humiliation in such a venue where he has little control of what the participants and parade spectators might do.
My money is on a Joe no show.

Heh!
Sara – is the message really different? I think Republicans — traditional conservatives, not neo-conservatives — have had enough and are likely not to want people who are kissing up to and part-and-parcel of the Bush administration.
My in-laws are die-hard Repugs, and they both can’t stand Bush; it’s taken 4-plus years to get them to this point, but they will tell you straight out they can’t stand him. If somebody with a level head, practical and successful experience in the real world asked them for their vote, they’d be willing to listen, as long as that person wasn’t going to sell them more George Bush.
We’re in MI, mind you – but this state is deceptively RED, the in-laws from a RED area. The in-laws would be grossed out by the Kiss and all that it meant to their Medicare D world.
In a blue state, would it be that different? Lamont still has to run against the man, Democratic candidate or no.
And it’s obvious the Repugs are worried about Lamont’s real stance, or else they wouldn’t have spent so much time painting Lamont as “far left”. Successful business man with bi-partisan cred — yah, “far left” my eye.
Is it just me, or are Cheney and Lieberman wearing the same tie in that picture? Does this mean they’re going steady?
you are not alone, Michael– check my 30 and jennifer at 200.

Now, come back.
In a stirring reanactment of the parade sceen in Animal House, the Kiss Float is disguised as a giant birthday cake for Joe, and rides just behind him until it gets to the center of town when it is revealed (Ned Lamont doint the Belushi pirate would be the topper…..)

Deep in the epu:
Cheney strikes me as the kind who’ll confirm an appointment with a friendly, “By the way, I’m wearing a checked tie tomorrow.” If you don’t have enough sense to do likewise, then after the press op he does that Boston Strangler re-enactment he’s apparently doing in that photo on you.
Even Deeper EPU…
I really like the idea of the wax lips and the Kiss buttons handed out as part of the campaign with the slogan “Kiss Joe Good Bye !”
Couldn`t hurt…
