Anyone looking for a great way to say "thanks" to Keith Olberman for his fiery smackdown of Donald Rumsfeld yesterday might think about pre-ordering Keith's new book, The Worst Person in the World: And 202 Strong Contenders, set for release on September 11, 2006.
The wingnuts are already foaming and drooling and no doubt waiving their paintball guns around over Olberman's comments, so you can be sure he's hearing about it. It's a nice way to make sure he hears the gratitude of folks in a way that I'm sure he will appreciate.
You can order it here.

Olbermann!!
Any possibility of a Book Salon visit from Keith? (she asked hopefully)
KEITH —- THANKS!!!!!!
TKO!
it was a keithartic experience
Olbermann’s smack-down was so good that I had to send it to all my faculty and staff colleagues this morning. Since it quoted Edward R. Murrow on “due process of law,” this seemed like an appropriate step.
And Olbermann used the “F”-word. Amazing, really.
Prof @ 6
That being a 7-letter word, not a 4-letter word.
if I click on the link here at FDL, does this blog make some money? I certainly hope so … if not, you sure so should set it up that way !
A penny here and a penny there soon adds up to some loose change!
Just want to update something from last night. I heard back from the Donna Edwards campaign, and no she wasn’t the same Donna Edwards I went to high school with. With Donna’s father in the Air Force she spend most of those years overseas.
I still think I went to high school with her younger doppelganger.

Yep, a little bit.
fascinating, might have to grab it…
jane, that is one elegant post
nicely done
Thanks for letting us know about Olbermann’s new book. Aside from supporting him, I’m sure it’s witty and entertaining.
Olbermann and the mayor of SLC, Rocky Anderson, seem to be kindred spirits. Here are some excerpts from his speech yesterday…
“A patriot does not tell people who are intensely concerned about their country to just sit down and be quiet; to refrain from speaking out in the name of politeness or for the sake of being a good host; to show slavish, blind obedience and deference to a dishonest, war-mongering, human-rights-violating president.”
(snip)
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.”

HEAR THAT JOE? Could that be one of the reasons why those evil CT voters turned against you?
Olbermann. Sometimes I don’t understand how we got so lucky to have guys like this. Same goes for the likes of Smith, Arianna and Hamsher.

One punch and Rummy was kissing canvas.
I just realized – looking at the book cover – that I have been spelling “Olbermann” with only one “n” – don’t know why my brain only ever saw/thought that until just a minute or so ago…
Keith Olbermann, far and away the BEST newsman in the USA.
Prof @ 7
He called Rumsfeld a fuckwit?
Prof @ 7
rumsfeld and cheney invoking the word “fascism” is what they always, do;
they accuse their critics of what they are
calling any democrat or critic a fascist is calling the kettle black, it’s a rove trick, call your critics what you are yourself
this administration and corporatist everywhere are with no doubt, fascists

no longer OT: Howard Dean’s interview with Keith Olberman is now up at Crooks and Liars:

It’s in both Windows Media and Quicktime formats.

Both Olberman and Colbert are each deserving of Medals of Freedom! The best stuff of the year, easily, being Olberman’s commentary last night and Colbert’s bit during Bush’s roast. Forget the Medal, give them both the Brass Balls Award for stepping up to the plate with the game on the line and pounding it out of the park!
You can order the book here and support Barnes & Noble, a company that gives 92% of its political contributions to Dems, as opposed to Amazon, that devotes 59% of its contributions to Repugs. Why fund your own demise?
HotFlash @ 23
The support emails or the royalties? If the former…well, I’m sure Olberman has gotten his share of right-wing astroturf hate. It hasn’t stopped him yet. As for the book, I’ll probably have to do the library for this one, but it won’t be because I didn’t want him to make money.
Keith’s commentary was outstanding!
No y’all know that the wingers are going to astroturf the network with complaints. So, please, don’t forget to write letters to Keith and his bosses to thank them — and ask for more.

A freeper quote from the Kos article:
Hmmm, “crapless feckweasel”…do they really talk like that? Wow. And Dems are afraid of them why exactly? “…a useful idiot of the enemies of our nation.”? That doesn’t even parse.
I recommend the lot of them be shipped back to highschool, and sentenced to a few years of remedial English.

Jane — thanks for this plug; I wondered if he had a book in the pipeline, and lo, you answered the question. I second Anne’s query above; timing would be PERFECT if KO could be the next book in the queue after Arianna’s.
mamayaga — I understand that B&N is a blue vendor, but buying from Amazon througn the links at this site supports FireDogLake. It’s a win-win; what would be nice if B&N did a better job with its ad programs so that we could both support FDL and buy from them.
Or one could simply click the Donate button in the upper right of this page and help out FDL directly. Payday has finally arrived, so I’m going to slip a few bucks myself.

I’m a tad young to remember the McCarthy era, was only four in ‘54, but I do remember something of the vibe in the house from that time. Kind of the “it’s not about you and don’t worry about why Mama is crying, she’s got something in her eye” sort of happy talk to a worried kinder.

As a friend of an author-publisher, I’ve learned that asking for a new book like KO’s at your local library is a great way to help its sales. And it’s likely that the book will be seen by more people. So don’t be discouraged, you can help out a lot!
Thank you – I didn’t know he had a book coming out. The only thing bad about that link is that there was a list of other or related or soemthing books as well, and I had to see the very disturbing sight of something called The O’Reilly Factor For Kids.

Oh, on Mike Malloy’s being dumped by AAR. HopeSpringsaTurtle found the dirt — AAR has reached a syndication agreement with Satan, errrr … ClearChannel.
So now we know who got to AAR.
It sounds to me like Malloy’s head was part of the price for the syndication deal. And so much for, “we want to form a liberal radio network.” Fucking sell-outs.

Please go ta Crooks and Liars and watch Olberman’s interview of Howard Dean. I needed some sort of reassurance that there was a teeny-weeny bit of hope that maybe there was still life left somewhere in the Democratic Party leadership…WOW, this guy Dean needs to be given dictatorial power in the Democratic Party. if Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi could get a shot of Howard’s hormones then we wouldn’t hafta worry about Rahm the Terrible and Bookkeeper Chuck Schumer.
KEEP THE FAITH, THEY CAN’T HAVE A WAR WITHOUT US!!!
OT – but here’s a campaign ad you’ve just got to see!
Thanks Keith, I’m Olberwhelmnned. ;~}
I wouldn’t worry about Olbermann’s job. TV, and all media for that matter, are businesses at the end of the day. To them, it isn’t about the “issues,” it’s about ratings and money – controversy is/tragedy is good. Truth, sure, if its popular and will garner ratings which lead to profits. At the end of the day even though they call it news it is entertainment, at least it is today – regardless of what it once was, and it is there to make them money.
Thus, what is being said doesn’t really matter – for the most part. Faux news is somewhat of an exception, but their numbers are going down fast so it will be interesting to see how they react. I bet they get more “liberal” or at least truthier, cause at the end of the day they answer to shareholders, not repugs; and they did recently dis Coulter, which is not something that would have happened when the phony outrage and lies were selling better.
I’m not in anyway stating that Obermann isn’t genuine in believing what he said, or that he wasn’t brave for injecting himself directly into the “controversy.” I’m betting he is genuine, and he deserves kudos for that, and support in terms of viewership.
Anyway, if you’re worried about Olberman just think of the surprise to all of Noron and friends laughing at Chimpy. TV is usually pretty good at spotting a trend and running with it, ad naseum.
Jane Hamsher at 42: Why, I can’t imagine you doing something so underhanded, unsupportive, and down-and-dirty on someone else’s website! You must be mistaken — surely it was Loretta, if it happened at all.
(Longish) part of a letter I got from Boxer’s PAC. Conspicuously missing: any mention of CT race. Um, Barbara?
“Of course, Jim Webb is not the only candidate you’ve supported over the past few months. You stood with Claire McCaskill in her challenge to Missouri Sen. Jim Talent by contributing more than $35,000 to her campaign. Latest polls show Claire with a 6 point lead. You also provided critical help to two of our most threatened Democratic Senate incumbents, Senators Maria Cantwell of Washington and Bill Nelson of Florida, raising more than $85,000 for Maria and more than $70,000 for Bill. Now they’re both looking very strong in their re-election bids.
“As we near Election Day, our route to a Democratic majority in the Senate — a majority that would return much needed oversight of the Executive Branch to Congress — is becoming clear. Five Democratic candidates are running strong against vulnerable Republican incumbents: Bob Casey in Pennsylvania (running against Sen. Rick Santorum), Jon Tester in Montana (running against Sen. Conrad Burns), Sheldon Whitehouse in Rhode Island (running against Sen. Lincoln Chafee), Sherrod Brown in Ohio (running against Sen. Mike DeWine), and Claire McCaskill in Missouri (running against Sen. Jim Talent). If all those races go our way, and we hold on to our current Democratic seats, we would need just one more victory to give us a 51-49 majority.”
Has the tide actually turned? I mean, forcefully, irreversibly turned against the neocons in America?
It’s beginning to feel that way…
avenging_angel @ 64
I’ll believe that on Nov. 8 when we have taken back one or more of the houses in Congress. Until then, we get to work to make it so.

RevDeb,
Appearing on ClearChannel stations is different from having a syndication deal with ClearChannel. Without the syndication deal, CC stations had to go out of their way to broadcast an AAR show. God only knows what sort of internal paperwork gymnastics they had to through to do it. Now, AAR is right on a CC station manager’s menu.
In one way, it’s a half-decent sign that AAR got ClearChannel’s attention. But if ClearChannel is dictating AAR content it’s a bad sign. Dumping Malloy suggests to me that ClearChannel is dictating content.

Don’t take him fer granted, there are plenty of examples of shows with good audience bein’ lifted in the dead of night…the only way he stays on is visable public support that ad-buyers can’t avoid. It’s the corporations who pay for the advertisin’ that will get ‘im canned (or not)…and they will do it even if he’s popular, if it’s in their long-term intrest.

It’s interesting that the post by Sara at TNH talks about a synchronicity speech given in Congress the same time, approx, that Murrow gave his sign off address on McCarthy (Sara’s piece is really great).
Rocky and TKO Keith hitting at the same time is a weird synchronicity too.
Just a tip. Amazon is a “Red Company”, giving most of their political donations to Republicans. I used Barnes & Noble to order the book, because they are a Blue Company.

RevDeb @ 74
I agree that CC making programming decisions is disturbing.
I doubt we’ll get to see what the deal is. Peter Werbe, who is subbing for Malloy while he’s subbing for Rhodes has been told not to say anything about the situation.
Malloy has asked his listeners to give Werbe a chance — it’s not Werbe’s fault, and Werbe’s a good guy.
The facts of the matter are that two weeks ago AAR announced that they had renewed Malloy’s contract for two years. Then, suddenly, he’s canceled ‘for financial reasons.’ Well, the financial reasons didn’t exist two weeks ago, did they?
The only obvious change in the financials is the syndication deal with ClearChannel. It sounds to me like CC said, “Here’s a wad of money, but Malloy’s got to go.”
BC
*ilbo – What is going on is that their “core” audience, the wingnut base, really isn’t that large by national “success” standards. No question that Malloy is far-and-away the most abrasive personality AAR has on the air.
In fact, the first time I heard Malloy on the air, I thought that he was real whack-job. His Bush Crime Family schtick was really a little over the top. But time has shown that Malloy was absolutely right about these fascists. It really is a crime family.
