President Rose Colored Glasses spoke to the American Legion today, saying the following (via NYTimes):
“In the coming days, I’ll deliver a series of speeches describing the nature of our enemy in the war on terror, the insights we’ve gained about their aims and ambitions, the successes and setbacks we’ve experienced, and our strategy to prevail in this long war,” Mr. Bush said.
We have a strategy? Really?!? Could we start using it?
President Bush also said the following about Iran (via WaPo):
"We know the depth of suffering that Iran’s sponsorship of terrorists has brought," Bush said. "And we can imagine how much worse it would be if Iran were allowed to acquire nuclear weapons."
"There must be consequences and we must not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon," Bush said. He said the world faces a "grave threat from the radical regime in Iran."
Not to minimize the threat that a nuclear armed Iran could pose in terms of stability in the region, let alone the effect that an addition to the nuclear club could have on other nations wishing to advance their standing via a security strong arm, any action that is taken by the United States in the wake of the ginned up, fact lacking crap that we put forward to publicly justify the conflict with and subsequent occupation of Iraq…well, it had best be as solid as humanly possible and positively airtight. Because the US has so little credibility now due to the Bush Administration’s bungling "big stick and not much else" approach to foreign relations, we have no high ground left on which to stand without a serious rebuilding of our credibility based on nothing but rock solid claims from here on forward. (And all of Fred Fleitz’ hot air claims aside, the evidence on Iran is even more sketchy than Iraq’s was. And that is simply not good enough.)
Repeating something over and over does not make it true. Any more than clicking your heels together three times and saying "There’s no place like home." works outside of Oz, the land of technicolor magic and the Lollipop Guild. And ginning up a conflict with Iran based on sketchy evidence is no more legitimate than how it was done for Iraq — just because you got your way once, Mr. President, it doesn’t mean that you were right. It simply means that Congress and the American public were too weak or too trusting to see it coming.
But you don’t get a pass this time.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…shame on me and every other person, including every elected representative that allows it to happen in the name of maintaining their own personal power chair. And if all the GOP has in its election pocket is a hope that the 9/11 anniversary will make all of us run around like Chicken Little and pray for them to save us, well they have another think coming.
Please. I’ll be damned if I’m going to run scared into the night because the terrorists are coming. My family comes from tough Irish stock — we’ve faced down the British on two continents, and we don’t run from a fight. Neither do we let someone else dictate how we live our lives. As if I’d trust this bumbling crew of incompetent Republican boobs to adequately park my car at this point. Keith Olberman was correct — this bunch of Neville Chamberlains are not fit to stand in the shadow of Winston Churchill and FDR.
I’ll take a genuine leader — one who says "I have nothing to fear, but fear itself," or one who asks "not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." A real President doesn’t just stand up and say "be afraid, and leave it to me to take care of everything." That’s what a control freak or an abusive partner does, and I’ll take neither, thank you very much.
It’s time for all of us to feel empowered — and it’s time for the GOP to learn the meaning of accountability. You don’t get a pass to continue to be an abysmal failure without consequences. Had enough?
(Oh, and the irony of the above photo? The headline popped up below President Bush just as he delivered another rose-colored assessment of how things are going in Iraq.)

OH FITZ, WHERE ART THOU??!!!
John Dean on Olbermann now.
If impeachment was right for Bill Clinton (debatable) when no one died resultant of his alleged lie, then impeachment is essential for Bush’s lies, which has resulted in thousands upon thousands of deaths.
I am so weary of hearing the same old Bush broken record.
ROOTZ!! Take back the Congress!!!!
Did I see where Mr. Dean was going to be here?
Olbermann!
The people running our government are batshit crazy. And the talking heads keep saying “the Democrats don’t have a plan.”
How about “we’re not nuttier than a fruitcake.” How’s that Norah?
There is some seriously pathological groupthink going on in that White House.
I mean, really.
Great post Christy. I saw that ironic juxtaposition live. Speaking of happy talking the Iraq mess, I hope everyone saw the WaPo’s uncovering of a Pentagon contract to search for positive war coverage (here). Pathetic and yet scary.

You know what I want? A bumper sticker with a Democratic donkey next to the words “Not Afraid”.
Any thoughts on what the almost-inevitable Rovian “October Surprise” will be? This regime’s being backed into such a corner that I’m growing a bit concerned about the magnitude of such a gambit to be considered “successful.” [sigh…]
By the way, KO gave a nice shout-out to all of us that sent in e-mails/calls in support of last night’s commentary.
‘A real President doesn’t just stand up and say “be afraid, and leave it to me to take care of everything.” That’s what a control freak or an abusive partner does’
That nails it, Redd. America and it’s ruling party are in a dysfunctional relationship.
Too many Americans (such as my mom, f’rinstance), are in denial about the battering, abuse, cheating, and lying on the part of BushCheneyCo.
My mom put up with my dad’s abuse, cheating, and lying for many years. We always had to parade around as if there was nothing wrong in our family, so that no one (especially her family, who had warned her…) would know what was going on. It was all about her pride, dignity, and inability to admit a mistake.
I hadn’t considered the parallels until just now, reading your piece.
Spot-on, Christy – as always.
I am just bone-weary of this constant PR – it’s always about the sell and never about the work or the reality or true leadership. Is there really anyone who doesn’t watch Fox who thinks we believe this crap? On the rare occasions when I can even stand to read what he says (I can “hear” his voice when I read his words – it’s a curse I tell you), nothing he says is connected in any way to reality.
This latest push to raise the spectre of the Nazis is really raising my blood pressure. If memory serves, it seems to me there were some pretty outraged Republicans sputtering and foaming at the mouth the last time a Democrat used that particular N-word – but I guess it’s another case of it being okay if you’re a Republican…
I listened to Dan Bartlett, and had to smile when I heard Norah O’Donnell say to him, “Come on, Dan, the president says this isn’t partisan, and he has a big smirk on his face – of course this is partisan.” Bartlett sputters about the president not making it political – and she said, “no, he’s got Rumsfeld for that.”
I feel like we’ve been driving around in a lemon, that is broken down and falling apart, and every time we take it back to the dealer, he manages to convince us it’s a beautiful machine and besides, the other cars on the lot are even worse than ours, so off we go, clattering and rattling, back home. Sorry, George, this time the lemon’s going back, and we’re not buying any cars from your lot this time.
I wouldn’t let Bush and his crew of lackeys run my sausage cart for one day.

Nuclear war in Iran.
I said it before, I need to say it again
the democrats NEED to schedule a speech right beside the president’s, vice president’s and rumsfeld’s
they need to EXPOSE the propaganda each and every time the president tries to “catapult” it
I GUARANTEE the president will END his tour before it even get’s wings
we really cannot afford to wait untill he says something and then hope the press comes to us for response, we need to MAKE THE NEWS ourselves, PUNISH any lie with the truth, SIFFER any propaganda to the light of day.
we can’t sit on our butts and wait for the media to give us a chance

Gee, that’s a happy thought. My only hope is that it wouldn’t be something that would engulf the whole world, not for a moment that I’d want anything at all. I think the Dem firestorm this election season should be sufficient!

from the Webb campaign in VA:
Dear Friend,
I wanted to send a note to you today, as a supporter of Jim’s campaign and someone who cares about the direction of this country. As many of you know, Jim’s son Jimmy, an infantry Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, has been scheduled to be deployed to Iraq for a number of months. In the last few days, Jimmy learned he would be deploying next week. While Labor Day is the traditional kickoff to the Election and Jim already made many commitments to do events throughout the state, including events with Governor Tim Kaine and Governor Mark Warner, we hope you understand at this time that Jim wants to have time with his son. He will be taking Jimmy back to Camp Lejeune on Monday and will spend time with him and his unit before their deployment.
Jim wishes to emphasize that he is not unlike the thousands of parents and families who are sending their children and loved ones to war but that it is important to him that he has some private moments with his son before he deploys. Regardless of the political aspects of this war and your feelings towards it, it’s important we keep our thoughts and prayers with the soldiers we are sending into harm’s way.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Evidence of an Iran nuclear program does NOT equal nuclear weapons.
A U.N. supervised Iranian nuclear program may or may not be a threat to Israel. Does that mean we should permit the slaughter of our sons and daughters and $billions once again? They are our ally…how does that benefit us.
Phony evidence of Iran nukes: that ridiculous laptop story they were trying to shop around about a year ago. Detailed computer program in Farsi doesn’t mean anything beyond the ability to find a decent Farsi translator.
The SAME people who manufactured and magnified phony evidence for Iraq’s excellent adventure are out there banging the war drums AGAIN for Iran. Can we be this gullible a second time?? Iran-Contra: Iranians and Israelis. Think about it.
Pakistan has actual nuclear weapons.
Are we bombing them?
India has actual nuclear weapons.
Heck, we are GIVING them MORE nukular help.
Israel has actual nuclear weapons.
We are…never mind.
Russia has actual nuclear weapons.
Bushco has CUT the Nunn-Lugar program to destroy REAL WMD.
China has actual nuclear weapons.
We are in debt more and more to them every day. Fortunately we’ll never have to do what they say! Whew.
The U.S. actually DETONATED nuclear weapons.
Move along, nothing to see here. Ooh look, shiny!

I hate the idea of our jolly right wing conquistadors having them. But, look at North Korea. I’m afraid Mr. Bush does have a plan. It involves blowing things and people up. His friends clean up the mess and bring in new things. The people just die. It is his idea of environmentalism, population control. The use of Iran as a boogie man is the prime example of how much of the message he controls. Iran hasn’t started a war in decades, perhap centuries. The only reason they took Americans hostage was because we were protecting the dictator we had installed after they overthrew him. Like taking in Saddam if the Iraqi’s had overthrown him. Iran’s first nuclear equipment was given to them by the United States. Their leader sent a twenty five page personal letter to Bush and asked for a dialogue. Bush refused. The Iranian leader suggested a debate, perhaps toungue in cheek, but he suggested it. Where is the threat? They have had war games lately because they are the ones being threatened by our President. Bush says we don’t understand who we are fighting. I understand history. I understand the Constitution of this country. I understand who I’m fighting. The frenzied look of a failed theif, the condesending sneer, the mouthed words become more apperent each deadly day on this boy who would be king. Terrorist frighten people into doing what they want them to do. Facist are terrorists. Bush is a facist, I can tell because he called me a facist. Nasty words, ugly images, now that’s leadership! I still think this is the home of the brave people, the free people, the honorable people of the United States of America. We don’t start wars, we don’t torture people and we try to be a Nation of Laws. The supreme law of this land is the Constitution and it states that when the President breaks the law, he shall be impeached. Not that he may or might be impeached, it isn’t that we are allowed to impeach him, it is that we a required by law to impeach him. (and hopefully? someday her.)
Bush’s plans are not in the best interest of the people of this country or the world. Since we elected him, by our ingnorance, fear, or apathy, it is our job as citizens to impeach him. It’s the law. I like our law better than his plan.
maybe if the fundies realized how many fetuses exist in Tehran the drive for nuclear war might dissipate?

This administration has given them way too much power using the words they have. These guys are small groups of crazies, with no army, navy or air force. With good police work we should be able to get the SOB’s. But even if we miss a few this is a strong country, we’ll survive any attack. I am just sick to death of these thumbsucking, bedwetters that are so damm worried that there are people that want to kill us. Well, OK, we’ll survive and they won’t.

Silly rabbit! Fundies never let the logical consequences stop them from taking their magical misery tour.
Based upon the Israeli defeat in Lebanon, and our defeat in Iraq, if an attack on Iran occurs, it will be atomic.
For a while this morning CNN.com had this headline for a story on the speechifyin’ tour:
Bush 3.0 releases patch for Iraq war
Less OT: I got a letter from Barbara Boxer’s PAC, which included the following two paragraphs:
“Of course, Jim Webb is not the only candidate you’ve supported over the past few months. You stood with Claire McCaskill in her challenge to Missouri Sen. Jim Talent by contributing more than $35,000 to her campaign. Latest polls show Claire with a 6 point lead. You also provided critical help to two of our most threatened Democratic Senate incumbents, Senators Maria Cantwell of Washington and Bill Nelson of Florida, raising more than $85,000 for Maria and more than $70,000 for Bill. Now they’re both looking very strong in their re-election bids.
“As we near Election Day, our route to a Democratic majority in the Senate — a majority that would return much needed oversight of the Executive Branch to Congress — is becoming clear. Five Democratic candidates are running strong against vulnerable Republican incumbents: Bob Casey in Pennsylvania (running against Sen. Rick Santorum), Jon Tester in Montana (running against Sen. Conrad Burns), Sheldon Whitehouse in Rhode Island (running against Sen. Lincoln Chafee), Sherrod Brown in Ohio (running against Sen. Mike DeWine), and Claire McCaskill in Missouri (running against Sen. Jim Talent). If all those races go our way, and we hold on to our current Democratic seats, we would need just one more victory to give us a 51-49 majority.”
There’s a fairly obvious omission here. (For those wondering about who’s giving money to Joe: his donor information at the FEC hasn’t been updated since 8/7 (donations on 8/5).)
CNN is doing its share of fanning the war flames against Iran. That shitheel Glenn Blech has had a parade of Neo-cons on the past few weeks to offer up platefuls of fear and loathing for the Iranians.
Cliff May was just on telling us that the Iranians are genocidal and will use nukes on the US, but that the Iranians will rise-up against the leaders when the US gives them the word.
I mean that have gotten everything else so right what could go wrong with this.

Apparently, it would be much better if we just bombed the guy getting off the boat.
This comes at the end of a discussion of the tactical plans for how our bombers must be targeted to make sure they take out all the Iran nuclear sites.
This insane stuff goes on all day long — on CNN — and that’s why Bush can speak to the American Legion, say truly insane things, and no one locks him up.

I am under the impression that our foreign policy sucks. It HAS sucked. It sucks because we meddle in other countries (middle eastern and south american) because they’re sitting on oil. We need to meddle to make sure the oil keeps coming and at prices that make our oil companies happy and keep the american people in their suv’s.
People in these countries are fed up and have turned to terrorism to try and get us to leave them alone.
When we invade a country it’s to ’spread democracy’ i.e., ‘control the oil.’
Call me old fashioned but isn’t the real way to stop terrorism is to get off our oil dependence and in doing so eliminating our need to meddle in other countries biz?

And caviar. I wonder how many wackos out there will take their cue from Conrad Burns.
And another thing; Ahmadinejad never actually said those words about wiping Israel off the map; which is the root of all those allegations about his so called genocidal ambitions …
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M…..and_Israel
Juan Cole, a University of Michigan Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History, translates the Persian phrase as:
The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad).[8]
According to Cole, “Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to wipe Israel off the map because no such idiom exists in Persian” and “He did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse.”[1]
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) translates the phrase similarly:
[T]his regime that is occupying Qods [Jerusalem] must be eliminated from the pages of history.[9]

notice—they want more.
It is going to get worse. The more anyone
pushes back the more they will shove ahead.
Palestine today is a terrible story not
being told. Israel strangely has morphed
into a monstrous entity of repression, brutal
subjugation and authors criminal conduct now
of international moral and ethical dimensions.
Invading Iran is not about anything other
than American Imperial mindset and desire to
have a big hand on ME oil supply control
and means of shaping global events through
it. Very 1950’s styled thinking. Very wrong
in todays world. Very dangerous in this
early part of the 21st century.
If threat of nuclear “ME weapons” is so
pressing then bring Israel into the ME atomic
forum as well. They have atomic weapons
and it is about time the USA started playing
this game much more evenly.
It is doubtful Bush2 is able to shape or
contour this discussion or line of policy
making and implementation. Iraq has shown
well enough he is in over his head.
Enough human beings have died over this
mans incompetence. The ME is not going to
return to 19th and 20th century levels of
passive behavior. That era is over. The
sooner the Americans wise up and start
behaving along responsible and real world
lines the better.
Militarism,Imperialism and stupidly
concocted neocon dreams of a NEW AMERICAN
CENTURY combined in USA meddling in ME are
the sure and swift way to the Gates of
Hell on Earth. Its sane thinking check in time.

If Chimpy is brought before the Hague, will he immediately pardon himself?
I have been reading and hearing that Iran is “a few years away from completing a bomb” ever since 1980. And now, twenty-six years later, the exact same line is being trotted out.
I even ran across a Frontline program last week from early 1992 that I’d taped, where one somewhat hysterical “expert” said that, without international restraints, they’d have one by 1995 or so, and even with attempts to interfere with their program by international cooperation, they’d still have one by 2000. “The year 2000?,” asked the interviewer. “Oh, yes, definitely, by then” sayeth the expert.
If they’d really wanted one (and, strategically, they might have had a good reason to build one during the `80s, when they were fighting Iraq and that adversary was, without any doubt, working on one at the time), they likely could have accomplished that task during the Iran-Iraq war, especially in the latter half of the decade, when a lot of the basic construction details were generally known from declassified documents. It certainly wouldn’t have been like starting from scratch, as with our WWII work.
But, in a militaristic society with a leadership hell-bent on regime change through force, to suggest that maybe the Iranians really don’t want the bomb is an heretical notion, and is considered almost blasphemous if spoken aloud.
I don’t run scared, either. My lineage:
Grandmother. Most famous heroics: East Texas. WWII. 1942. Husband 300 miles away, working in the shipyard, therefore raising EIGHT children alone (ages 2-17). Most things are rationed, including tires. Strange thing about that, bad people steal things that are hard to get. So, every night, the older boys remove all tires from the car and lock them in a shed for safekeeping. But it’s not enough. My grandmother woke up in the middle of the night–rustling outside. Something doesn’t sound right. She grabs her shotgun and goes outside just as the thief is about to get away with her tires. It’s someone she knows, and he gets scared when he sees her there. She points the shotgun at him and tells him to put the tires back where he found them. He does. She tells him to start walking, toward the highway in front of her house. He does. She tells him to get in the middle of the road, and not veer one eyelash off the dividing line. By now, he’s sure she’s gonna kill him. He’s begging her for mercy, “Oh please, Miss Sarah, don’t kill me! Please don’t kill me!” All my Nana will say is, “Keep walking.” He doesn’t dare disobey. She marches him three miles down the middle of that highway to the local constable’s office and turns him in. After he’s cuffed and taken away, the constable says, “Sarah, are you crazy? He could have taken that gun from you and killed you!”
My grandmother shrugged and replied, “It wasn’t loaded.”
And she left.

Replied to email, saying “Where’s Lamont on that list?” and reminding her that Lieberman isn’t a Dem any more. I’ll do it on paper also.
Wonder who we can get to run against her next time….
took VeryOldMother out for dinner this evening… she’s 87 and while the synapses don’t fire as fast as they used to, after we were done discussing the world’s state of affairs, she calmly said, “if those people don’t get voted out of office, we are going to have rise up and take this country back.”…
87 and still ready for a fight!

The source also revealed that US generals had repeatedly war-gamed a prospective conflict with Iran, but consistently found that the simulations predicted “an absolute nuclear disaster”, from which no clear winner would emerge. The scenarios gamed were so dismal, he said, that the generals briefed administration officials to avoid such a war at all costs. However, the source said that the Bush administration is ignoring the fears of the US military.

I think this is the October surprise.
Somehow when I did the copy and paste, I couldn’t add anything to it.
But, but, but.
We already have the strategy. Bush rolled it out several months ago. It was called “Plan For Victory”. Here, let me summarize it.
“Clear, Hold, Build”.
How much detail do you want? Who needs a timeline or exit strategy when you have a comprehensive strategy already in place. We know where we are at. It is called “clear”.
Everyone seems to be in full panic mode over the mere possibility that Iran might have nukes, that such a turn of events could have an unsettling effect on regional stability. Just why is that? I’m far more worried about Pakistans bomb. I rather doubt that even if the Iranians had a nuke, they wouldn’t be dumb enough or vicious enough to engage in some fervid thermonuclear jihad. MAD still works. I have come around to the thinking that an Iranian nuclear capability just might jerk the Israelis up a little shorter on their homicidal leash. It might, in fact, make things more stable. It might make them a bit more willing to quit sabotaging every peace inititiative to come down the pike.
It’’s simple folks….here’s how you ‘Cut the Head off the Monster’.
