After only agreeing to one debate before the Democratic party primary (which he lost), Turncoat Joe Lieberman is now whining at the top of his lungs that he wants to participate in debates.
Sen. Joe Lieberman called on the four other candidates in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race Thursday to meet next week and agree to a debate schedule.
Lieberman, who lost the Democratic primary to businessman Ned Lamont and is now running as an independent, sent letters to Lamont, Republican Alan Schlesinger, Green Party candidate Ralph Ferrucci and Concerned Citizens candidate Timothy Knibbs.
"Voters are eager to know what we will do to solve the problems affecting their daily lives," Lieberman wrote in his letter. He also said the candidates have an opportunity to set "a high standard for a new politics of civil engagement."
Most of the other candidates have already said they’re willing to debate.
When asked about the third-party request for debate participation, Tom Swan, campaign manager for Ned Lamont replied:
"Debates are a good thing, and in addition to the traditional debates between the Democratic and Republican candidates, we’ll fight to include minor parties like Connecticut for Lieberman."
I thought it was particularly magnanimous of Swan and of Ned Lamont to be supportive of Joe Lieberman’s minor party quest to participate in a debate. Of course, there is still that nagging question of Turncoat Joe’s de facto Republican candidate status. But that’s apparently been resolved by Joe’s placement on the ballot in November: he’ll be on line five, party of one — Connecticut for Lieberman’s Big Ego.
One does have to question the strategic thinking of Lieberman asking for debateS (plural). Honestly, the more I see of Joe Lieberman, the more I think of that rasping whine of fingernails on a chalkboard. Or the incessant, highpitched whining of the dentist’s drill right before it digs in to a cavity. Or perhaps that low-pitched whine of a mosquito just after it has pierced your arm and left you with an itchy welt that irritates for days on end. Or…well, just a lot of whining.
Connecticut voters have shown a tendency to have the same reaction to an overexposure of Turncoat Joe, and if I were working on his campaign, I might recommend less exposure of my candidate lest the entire state come down with a horrid case of Lieberman-itis.
Which is why, as a Lamont supporter, I’m saying, "Heckuva job, Turncoat Joe. Keep up the whining — it’s you. Just keep on being yourself." After all, it worked so well for you in the primary. (oops…just ignore that last bit…)

Olbermann!
I also find it interesting that Lamont-Lieberman did not get chosen for MTP debates from now till November. Why not?
Ned First!
kirby at 2 — they only do the Republican and Democratic candidates on the show. Lieberman is his own little party now, so he wouldn’t have been included. And since the race already got quite a bit of coverage in the primaries, I think they decided to spotlight other races that haven’t gotten as much teevee coverage. That would be my guess, anyway, based on the races that I have seen included.

I think you’re right. They should DEFINITELY have the two candidates for this race debating on MTP pronto. It’s one of the most hotly contested seats in the Senate.
And I have no doubt both Ned and Alan Schlessinger would say yes.
Christy, the quote that you posted from Swan (which I liked) does not seem to appear in the article that you linked to (although the article does have a similar quote from another Lamont staff person). What is your source? Thanks.
will Ned take debate?
Just curious, does anyone know how was joe to third party candidates in previous elections, did he fight to have them included in debates or keep them out?
Heh, heh, heh. Being a smart ass is not a bad thing in a campaign manager.
one or two more debates with Ned and Joe will be toast… burnt toast…
In addition to supporting Democrat Joe
They Shot the Wrong Lincoln

Lieberman over Republican Alan Schlesinger in Connecticut, President Bush is supporting the Democrat over the Republican in Rhode Island, too. In the Republican primary, Bush supports Lincoln Chafee — who votes with Bush on the important issues less often than Sen. Lieberman does — over the only actual Republican in the race, Stephen Laffey.
Apart from Bush, the only person who hasn’t figured out that Lincoln Chafee is a Democrat is Lincoln Chafee. As the expression goes, if Chafee switched parties, the average IQ on both sides of the aisle would go up.

*xyz at 7 — I had a source close to the campaign in Connecticut who heard Swan say it. :) Someone that I would trust to get the quote down accurately. (And, in reading the article, I saw that the Lamont campaign spokesperson said something very similar as well.)
Thanks Christy!

Should be interesting to hear what Lieberman’s position on the Iraq invasion and occupation is now. It’s so fluid. I expect to hear him calling for a time certain for withdrawal. No dubt Ned’s team is getting together a time line of Joe’s position on Iraq, yes?

Lieberman says: Exclude Third Parties From Debate (2 / 0-)
Recommended by:Oxy Moron, CenterLeft
During the 2000 presidential race, Lieberman opposed including Third Party Candidates in the presidential and vice-presidential debates. (I suppose he was scared of having to debate Harvard Law Alum and Native American activist Winona LaDuke? Or worried it would detract from his chance to “bond” with Cheney).
Sorry I don’t have a cite handy, but if anyone can find it, it might be useful to point out that in the past, he thought that anyone who is not a Democrat or a Republican deserves to be excluded from debates…

What I’d love to see is an outside party (MoveOn?) prepare a commercial that starts out with a mosquito buzzing in the dark, then a voice-over saying “I hate that whining noise” then have it morph into Lieberman droning on unintelligibly. End with the voice-over again “We need to get rid of it.”
Should be a 15 second spot. Cheap to make and inexpensive to place frequently.

You know that’s a very good question. Anyone have an answer? It would be sweet if he actively tried to keep third party candidates out of debates in the past.
Winona LaDuke was Nader’s running mate. She’s currently living on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota and a strong advocate for native people and women’s issues. A Harvard graduate, too.
You should be able to google her, Christy.
Never mind…I was thinking of this guy:
Giordano, a three-term Waterbury mayor, had also served as a Connecticut state representative and was the Republican challenger against popular incumbent Senator Joseph Lieberman in 2000. The child sex charges surfaced in 2001, during a federal corruption investigation into Giordano’s administration. He was accused of taking kickbacks involving city contracts, making him Waterbury’s third consecutive mayor to end up in court and the second to go to prison.

ccmask @ 22
Too bad it isn’t Bush.
I agree with you about the debates, Redd. I think that Joe can only lose. Ned has a steady commentary about how his candidacy is not just about the war. He has a lot to talk about. Joe has nothing to talk about; ergo, he will whine.
I wonder if Joe will absolutely tank in one debate. If that happens, maybe some of these Senate fence sitters will get off the fence and nudge him out of the race.
Maybe if Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton go to see him, his ego will be salved.
This nitwit better not cost us four seats in the House. It should be made clear to him by the powers of the party that he will be persona non grata at any Democratic gathering if his continued ego stroking costs us those seats.
And Hillary is not about to debate her anti-Iraq/Bush War, pro-labor opponent Tasini in New York. She’s afraid to. The Senator is worried that New Yorkers might suspect she’s hoodwinking them. Which of course, she is. Hillary is as cunning as Rove. I just detest the idea that in 2008, for me, it will be either vote for Clinton, or don’t vote. It’s a form of disenfranchisement if the Democrat big wigs force the Senator down our Democratic throats.

apropos of Lieberman too, Munch did a Kiss too
So how does JL portray himself in such a debate, and to whom is he appealing? He has spent the last two weeks getting GOP endorsements, campaigning with Repubs, soliciting GOP money, appearing on rightwing shows, being praised/supported by every national Republican (including some of the most unpopular in the country), all under the apparent assumption that he can get enough Repub votes, plus enough pro-war Indies, plus the remaining pro-war/pro-Israel Dems to beat Lamont.
The problem is, that’s a losing strategy if you alienate too many Dems of all stripes, anti-war or not, and too many moderate Indies, and too many anti-war Repubs to have a winning coalition.
If he goes on a public debate, he’ll get hammered for his flip-flogs on “timetables” and his disloyalty to principle. He can’t move back to the left, because the Republican candidate will get equal time in the debate and could start to gain Republican support, or at least Republicans will lose incentives to show up in November. And if he tries to hold on the far right, as Lamont will probably force him to defend, he loses the remaining Dems except for hard core war advocates. The questions directed at JL will remind voters that he’s changed positions on issues that he said he’d hold to as a matter of principle.
Instead of walking in with a lot of credibility, he’ll be walking into a public forum in which he’s forced to defend what was once portrayed as his principal attraction. And he’s going to have to defend (or distance himself from) every Rummy/Bush estreme, “fascist” comment the Bushies have used in the last two weeks. “Senator, do you agree with President Bush that . . . [fill in the blank]?”
So what is a plausible strategy? Because this is not the same polished incumbent vs inexperienced new comer matchup we had in the first debate.

I’ll end this comment with this morsel of joe;
“Sen. Lieberman: Bernie, you’re absolutely right. There’s too much partisanship in Washington. It puzzles me. You know, you’d think that people in public life and politics would want to do what would make them popular. And yet, too often people in both parties seem to act in a way that brings down the institutions of government and each of us individually, and it’s a shame. I have tried very hard in my career to call them as I see them and work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get things done. And I’m proud of my record in that regard, and I certainly think that would be an asset that I could bring to the vice presidency, should I be fortunate enough to be elected. I mean, in my Senate career I’ve worked with Bob Dole, for instance, on Bosnia, and I worked with John McCain on cultural values. I worked with Connie Mack on foreign policy. I worked with Don Nickles on the International Religious Freedom Act. If I go on much longer, I’m going to get in trouble with my own party.(LAUGHTER) But the fact is that’s the way thing get done, and I’m proud of those partnerships.”

I agree. I think Joe’s painting himself into a corner. Alienating Dems, trying to appease Reps who still probably think he’s too liberal for the most part, and confusing Indies while besmirching his one asset – his “goodguy” image. When he’s finally perceived as the rat he truly is, it will be all over.
Interesting. I’ve always thought that the lesser-known challenger, usually behind in the polls, needing some free publicity and some sparks, is the one who pushes the powerful incumbent for a debate. I certainly pushed for Mr. Lamont to debate LiarMan months ago. And now LiarMan comes, hat in hand, wanting debates.
Oooook. Then fine. I suggest that Mr. Swan set up negotiations. Only…on Swan’s terms. On Swan’s dates, on his format, with media he approves, and under rules and procedures he approves. In essence, Swan says to LiarMan: you want to debate? Fine. Here’s the way it’s gonna be….
Swan/Lamont have the upper hand. Use it.

Rolling Stone did a piece on Joe before the 2000 election. Joe said:
Joe Lieberman: Foe of Third-Party Politics
“I ask those who are thinking about voting for Ralph Nader to decide how they feel — how George Bush feels — about protecting the environment, protecting consumers, protecting a woman’s right to choose, because all of those may well be in jeopardy if George Bush is elected president.” — Joe Lieberman, October 2000
“For Republicans to be putting Ralph Nader on television in a paid ad, certainly might lead your average observer to be cynical.” –Joe Lieberman rejecting GOP support for spoiler candidates, October 2000
“A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush,” — Joe Lieberman, September 2000

not that this would necessarily be a good idea – after I thought about the sunset ad for a while, about how cheap and amateurish it was, it seemed like it was almost trying to characterize Sen. Lieberman as underdog, naive and authentic. This debate stunt might be part of something along those lines. Would they actually try recharacterize an 18 yr. incumbent as a D.C. outsider?

Conventional wisdom says that the challenger supports debates as a way of increasing visibility and credibility, showing that they can go to toe with the incumbent. CW has little to say when the “challenger” is the incumbent. In these cases, the problem is not getting the message out. The message is already out there and that’s the problem. What Joe is trying to do now is change it or at least muddy the waters.
Ghostman @ 58

Why invite Lieberman to a debate at all?
It is not in the tradition of Fall debates to invite the losers of primaries in for inclusion. If there is a Communist Party nominee in Connecticut, he/she has more of a right to be invited to a debate than Joe Lieberman, a man who invented his party of one for vanity’s sake in a desperate and pitiful attempt to hold onto something that belongs to the people of Connecticut.
If he doesn’t want to follow the rules, then he can sit on the sidelines. Invite Schlesinger, Lamont and any other actual winners of primaries, or anyone else who won their party’s consensus to run under their party line.
And by consensus, I mean more than just Joe and Hadassah Lieberman. Seriously, fuck him already! He’s a loser.

Adding my voice. I was very, very disappointed in Boxer in her support of Lie-berman. But MAN, she kicked ever lovin’ but on NPR and on Olbermann. YOU GO! Nice job. Now, support Lamont, and keep out there.
And Boxer really needs to support Lamont. Like go to Connecticut and do the deed Senator!

Add Jack Kemp. Four washed up pols. What at team! The piece de resistance will be when Bob Dole signs up. Average age, what…72? Call it the Gerontology Party. In a way it is at once fitting and revealing that Joe needs help from these guys who were possibly relevant 20 years ago (Koch was a good mayor) but out of touch today.
Think Sunset ads.

If Swan has the upper hand in setting the terms for the debate, he should insist that each participant’s party affiliation be displayed prominantly on-screen whenever he or she speaks.
Also, the party affiliation of each debater should be on their respective individual lecturns.
I want to see that “Connecticut for Lieberman” listed right there for all to see!
And I want everyone to know who the real Democrat in the debate is.

Lowell Weicker could whup them all with one leg tied behind his back…

Maybe Joe can snag Gerald Ford! (Is he still alive?)
No debates with Lieberman! Exclude him and watch him whine.
Rocky Rocks!!
Rocky Anderson. My kind of leader!!!
Rocky Anderson rocks.
yee hah– Rocky the Rock!
is that the Kremlin behind Rocky?
Rocky Anderson for President!
Wow, Rocky Anderson just gave the entire Dem leadership a lesson in . . . leadership.
I’ll bet he’ll make a prominent speech at the next Democratic Party convention.
VG at 136 — I’m stumped — arrrrgh.
He is really cool…
I loved his thanks to KO for his commentary, “It was inspiring”
Wow.
astralplame @ 37
I was going to join the Swan line, but I think I’ve just fallen in love with Rocky Anderson, the mayor of Salt Lake City. Zowie.

New Yorkers vote Jonathan Tasini on September 12th – give Hillary time to calibrate her positions for 2008. Tasini states his progressive positions sans equivocation.

Where’s that been these last few years?
Hey, Dem candidates: Do what Rocky Anderson just did.
on to Oddball, and KO says i don’t have a rummy moment everynite, ok?

more emails heading his way from me.
Rocky even thanked Keith for his statement about Rumsfeld. Rocky said it was inspirational …

Looked like something Angela would have designed. But she was AUF’ed, hooray!
I’d be tempted to tell Joe what Dems and Reps told Perot back in ‘94….you don’t have enough national standing to partipitate in debates where candidates from 2 national parties are participating.
I remember that…..when the ‘Big 2′ froze out the 3rd-party contender, on the excuse that he lacked sufficient standing (or national support….I’m going from memory here, so be nice). Granted, Perot was and is a gadfly, but it would certainly have spiced up what was otherwise a deadly boring affair.
In this case, though, Lieber-loser would supply an unnecessary distraction to the necessary Dem/Rep debate, and IMO serve to confuse the issues the other 2 are trying to present…..
And in honor of the Master’s return to its rightful place:
Scream 2 – Sunset Semester

the interesting thing about Rocky Anderson’s speech, yesterday, is that there was so much detail, and he covered so many issues and linked them all together — as though he follows this stuff as closely as . . . uh, fdl-ers. But he doesn’t look like a “rabid, venomous . . . “
Did anyone read the last David Brooks? He complained that when the State Dept guy was revealed as the 1st Plame source, none of the liberal bloggers said boo, because he’s a good guy, and not Cheney/Libby etc. Brooks never bothered to check his facts, such as reading CHS, or emptywheel, or . . .

It was the big church, whatever that one is called. I drove past it once when I was there, didn’t have time to play tourist…but it was a beautiful building.
Kurt @ 176
Who do you like for the final 3? I got Jeffery, Michael, and Laura.
Christy- added a few comments about this problem to mod commentary- as I said I couldn’t figure it out either. This appears to be some new “feature” of the revised WP, and it probably needs to be addressed by a WP expert.

If it had a big Moroni on top, it’s the temple. Even most Mormons can’t get inside there.
Keith is not gonna give up if we all support him.
Thank you MSNBC!
Unrelenting tonite for the majority of Americans who still think about stuff (yay) and their stoopid brothers and sisters.

There’s a Yay. :)

op99 @ 187
I went to a tour of the new temple in the Sacramento area last week. It, indeed, has a big Moroni on the top. My real estate agent who’s been a family friend forever knows I’m an atheist, but she also knows I’m interested in religion so I got the invite. It was very interesting.
Notice that on Countdown tonight, the serious political commentary part of the program is lasting twice as long as usual — this thing has given KO some juice. So when folks head over to give some bravos to KO and MSNBC, you might compliment that for that.
Now the non-serious parts start.
Someone once told me all the street names in Slat Lake (which are numbers) tell that street’s location in relation to the temple. I wonder if all mormon towns laid out that way, too. To their own temple, that is.
When he was Nixon’s attorney very manipulative only looking out for his own self interest(not to put to fine a point on it) jerk.
I don’t take ‘Silent Coup’ as gospel, but interesting.
op99 @ 181
(Please pardon the OT geekery hehe)
It’s so hard to pick, these last one’s are all such good designers.
Vincent – My pick for next elimination, but he actually has a thriving business designing for the red carpet right now.
Uli – Love her to death, but all of her dresses are riotous prints. It gets old.
Kayne – Love him to death too hehe…but I fear his “white trashiness” might be his undoing. (his words)
Laura – Actively dislike her, but she’s a great designer. Unfortunately, all of her outfits look pretty much the same. Yawn.
Jeffrey – Great designer, but there’s bound to be a formal gown challenge, and will his style translate? Not sure.
Michael – Love him, great designer, nothing negative at all about him.
If I had to pick the final 3, I’d guess Michael, Jeffrey, and Kayne.
LindaR @ 192
So far, off the top of my head, that’s you, me, *ilson, TeddySanFran. Can’t think of who else.
Re a debate: Ned has the advantage in not having held national office so there is little there for Joe to attack, except Ned’s money. If he attacks Ned’s stance on Iraq he is going heavily against CT war-weariness.
OTOH, Joe has had 18 years worth of record to be attacked on.
Can’t undertand why Joe would want a debate under these circumstances unless he is desperate. Usually it is the incumbent who refuses to debate. Were I Ned, I would play hard to get for a while, string Joe out, get under his skin, but do my homework anyway.
And then demand the middle lectern among the five as the price for agreeing. Hey, it’s Joe who’s asking for the debate, right?
just checked my email and found this from dru:
I would suggest he Lamonts rather than Laments.

Kurt 176; You must be talking Project Runway…? I haven’t watched this season, although I admit to following season 1 closely -my one and only reality show watching experience; loved the corn husk dress.
Hey Angie; thanks for posting that! although I already did :)
Hey all,
Trying to catch up, so forgive if this was addressed.
Did anyone catch Boxer use HolyJoe’s “nations peril” quote against Rummy? – AS A REASON TO FIRE HIM!
Rummy insinuates it – Fire him
HolyJoe says it – CAMPAIGN FOR HIM.
What doublespeak. Un-fucking-believable.
Fire them Both (Mrummy/Liebs)- They’re identical. And kick boxer in the ass.
Christy–you’ve got your bug facts wrong. The male mosquito whines “come here you sexy she mosquito, I’ve got a blood meal all staked out for you so we can get it on and you can make our precious little mosquito babies.” The female mosquito bites, mates and makes babies. But she does not whine.
Angie regarding the book smearing Dean:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Coup
It was described as one of “the most boring conspiracy books ever written” filled with “wild charges and vilifications” by The Washington Post. The New York Times Book Review said the book showed “a stunning ignorance of how the Government under Mr. Nixon operated.”
In 1992, John Dean filed a defamation suit against St. Martin’s Press, which was settled years later

Darkblack, that is absolutely wonderful.

I remember when the big Mormon Temple was newly constructed between Washington DC and Baltimore and you could see it from the beltway. A huge white glowing monstrosity. They opened it to the public for one day and then replaced all the carpet that the dirty heathens had soiled (to the tune of millions iirc). This was at least 25 years ago.
Then the funniest thing. Someone somehow got on a freeway overpass and spray painted in black “Surrender Dorothy” in huge letters as you’d pass the temple. Hysterical!
Althought the mormons supposedly keep all the records of our family trees and I think that’s pretty cool, all in all…
op99 @ 197
Me – although I usually describe myself as a Unitarian, which I am. Since very few people in the South ever seem to have heard of Unitarians, they just shut up.
Dru @ 202
Season 3 has been WAAAAAY better than the previous seasons. Watch them if you get the chance Dru. Bravo is showing the reruns all the time right now.
When it comes to passing off a sunset as a sunrise, Letter from Here was a model of full disclosure. Contrast the Joe Lieberman campaign. And what prompted Dan Gerstein to call it a sunrise in the first place was probably nothing more complicated than a tendency to shoot from the hip coupled with a reflexive tendency to contradict anything the Lamont camp says.
BarbaraB @ 210
I thought it was cool that RevDeb “invited” me to UU church & said a lot of atheists belong, and the motivation for them is the social side of it. I’ll still pass though, lol.

Project Runway is terrific. I haven’t watched last night’s yet. Between that and Top Chef, I learned a lot about two industries I knew very little about.
Regarding debates here in CT — the questioner is the key. We all love JoAnn Nesti here in CT — but she let Lieberman walk all over her, Ned, the format, etc. We need somebody from the media who is not in Lieberman’s pocket, or not terrified at the thought of losing access to challenge that crap and make him answer the questions. Otherwise, he’ll flibuster like he did the last time. That’s my worry.
The reason I was surprised Timmeh had not set up a CT Senate debate was because I thought he and Joey had each other on speed-dial, and Timmeh would love to do a favor for a buddy.

Here in Connecticut I would really like to see Green Candidate for Senate Ralph Ferrucci poll higher than GOP Candidate for Senate Alan Schlesinger (like FIVE percent would do it, A.S. is at about FOUR). Ha! That would make debate invites and podium placement and who enters first and last all quite the mess. Yes yes, I know, issues issues. But some part of me does like the chaos we are causing. I emailed Mom the quote from Dick Cheney yesterday “Dean Democrats have defeated Joe Lieberman” and said “I am so proud to be a Pain in the Vice President’s Ass!”
From Freedom Rider to Torture Apologist: Lieberman 06 @ 225
Green candidates leach support off (real) Dems – helps Lieberman. Please be careful what you wish for.
MTP is an exercise in MSM/GOP talking points and a bad venue for any Dem wanting to debate a Repug.
Tim Russert threw the FL Gov debate allowing Jeb Bush to talk about tax cuts while probing McBride’s budget and how he’ll balance the books by getting tax cheats. Maybe McBride wasn’t going to balance the budget but Jeb’s plans offered less revenue and got less “serious” scrutiny.
Little Russ even got a big hug from Barbara when the debate ended.
Don’t give Little Russ the MoJo of hosting Senatorial debates. Let some serious venue hold one — Colbert for instance. Make Tim drag out Rogaine Joe for another one-one debate where he interrupts himself. Great TV and no election gets hurt.

Lord knows, I can sympathize with a woman’s battle against gravity, but jeepers, KH’s neck looks 20 years older than her face.
And don’t forget the boob job. Oh, she’s had one — her pathetic performance with Alan Colmes proved it for me. I’ve seen that look before; my ex-wife’s mother (my ex-mother-in-law?) worked for the most expensive plastic surgeon in San Francisco. A fine looking mature woman she was anyway, but right after she had her breasts lifted she had the SAME LOOK on her face and the same body language as Harris did on that notorious booby-shot interview. It’s unmistakable.
Katherine Harris vs. Gravity in a steel cage death match.
yes, i find bloodsucking much easier if i sneak up on my prey. ;);)
