Keith Olberman delivered quite a commentary yesterday. TRex posted a YouTube last night and Crooks and Liars has the video (which might be easier on the dial up folks), and it is well worth a watch (more than one, actually). After watching the video, it’s worth a read. Yes, it was that good. Here, let me show you why:
The man who sees absolutes, where all other men see nuances and shades of meaning, is either a prophet, or a quack.
Donald H. Rumsfeld is not a prophet.
Mr. Rumsfeld’s remarkable speech to the American Legion yesterday demands the deep analysis—and the sober contemplation—of every American.
For it did not merely serve to impugn the morality or intelligence — indeed, the loyalty — of the majority of Americans who oppose the transient occupants of the highest offices in the land. Worse, still, it credits those same transient occupants — our employees — with a total omniscience; a total omniscience which neither common sense, nor this administration’s track record at home or abroad, suggests they deserve.
Dissent and disagreement with government is the life’s blood of human freedom; and not merely because it is the first roadblock against the kind of tyranny the men Mr. Rumsfeld likes to think of as “his” troops still fight, this very evening, in Iraq.
It is also essential. Because just every once in awhile it is right and the power to which it speaks, is wrong….
A person is President of the United States for a mere four or eight years (depending). When you think about it, that’s a fairly fleeting period of time, in the grand scheme of history. But the amount of damage that a person and their Administration may do while holding this very powerful office is immeasureable. Which is precisely why the Founders set up of a system of checks and balances to ensure that the President would never rule this nation by fiat is key, because we are to be a nation run by elected citizen representatives, not a nation of kings.
The people who hold elected office are human beings, prone to making mistakes just like everyone else. They are not kings to be revered and never questioned — that has NEVER been our history in this country. This is especially true when our nation faces a number of threats and difficult decisions — because making errors under those conditions is more than costly, it can be deadly.
Just ask all the folks who are still dealing with the aftermath of errors from Katrina, or who have family stationed in Iraq at the moment about how all those errors, especially compounded without oversight and a change of course to something better, can add up to one big mess.
That Keith Olberman felt that he had to remind Donald Rumsfeld, the Bush Administration, and a number of his viewership is telling — about the times in which we live, and about the atmosphere that has purposely been created as a PR environment for a President who is constantly campaigning and rarely, if ever, actually governing. That he is helped along in this endeavor by the do-nothing Republican-controlled Rubber Stamp Congress is bad enough — but that this has been done for a fleeting grab at Republican power for the party and for their cronies is disgusting.
If you have not watched Good Night and Good Luck, it is well worth a rental, especially for the context of the times in which Murrow was speaking, and the courage it took for him to do so. Keith Olberman quoted Edward R. Murrow last night, and it is worth repeating:
“We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty,” he said, in 1954. “We must remember always that accusation is not proof, and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law.
“We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men, not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate, and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular.”
The things that are most valuable to us are most often the things for which we have to work the hardest. Democracy is never a given — it must be fought for every single day by every one of us — a republic, if we can keep it. As voting citizens, it is our solemn duty to hold to account each and every elected representative to the principles of our republic.
For liberty. For our nation of laws and not men. For all of the men and women who gave their lives through the years for freedom, for justice, for America. As a nation, we have not always lived up to these ideals, but that does not mean that we should stop working toward them — it should only redouble our resolve to ensure that those persons we elect to uphold these principles believe in them all the stronger.
Each election gives us an opportunity to hold their feet to the fires of liberty. Had enough?

SPOTLIGHT this Post to MSNBC!
Also, more good news, David Sirota is going to work for Lamont!
Here’s the link to his letter:

Olberman!
“Freedom is a constant struggle.” — Angela Davis, 1970
Brava Christy!
Well spoken.
Been sending the Olbermann link to the C&L clip to LOTS of my friends and acquaintances. I urge everyone here to do the same.
Well said, Christy. Olbermann rocks. And good news, *xyz. Sirota rocks the boat.
Great great job Christy.
You go girl!
OT – hurricane watch issued for the Carolinas
Christy’s Ben Franklin quote above (”A republic, if you can keep it”), together with the new Lieberman ad, reminded me of another favorite Franklin story:
From PBS, if we can keep it.
Thanks all — living up to the Olberman commentary in the writing, with intermittent play breaks with the peanut, was a tough one this morning. *g* It was truly an extraordinary commentary, though, wasn’t it?
Love the photo. David Straithern absolutely channels Murrow.
If you didn’t catch the article by Mark Green, “Losing our Democracy to the “New Authoritarians,” I recommend it for the idea about the fragility of democracy that it echoes in Christy’s post.
Thank you, Christy; KO’s speech last night is worthy of continued and sustained attention.
Darn if we’re not making our own hope, y’all!
I keep going back to RevDeb’s insight: WE are the leaders we’ve been waiting for.
And Prairie Sunshine’s Stone by stone, we move the mountain.
So much left to do, but
THIS IS WORKING.
I award Olberman five Shakespeares.

lol
this one is BURNING up the net. I’ve seen it posted on several sites already today.
Kudos to you Keith. Up your ass Rummy.
Amen, Christy. Our President spends his time campaigning rather than governing. And while he’s occupied with PR and not substance, the Voldemort of this administration, VP Cheney keeps the go-to-war-in-Iran pot stirred. I wonder if the Prez knows he’s the front man and that the power is behind the throne.

And a Camoooo. You forgot CamOOOO!
Christy, I’m hoping that by the time Che reaches you, all he’s got left to serve is a nice drink of water. And not too much of that.
Oh, oops — I forgot Poland… *g*

Regarding the spotlight function – it is quite easy to use.
MSNBC doesn’t show up right away because spotlight is initially set to show email address for traditional print media.
To switch to TV email addresses, you have to click on the “TV” item, then click “update”. Then all of the MSNBC, NBC, and other TV email addresses will show up.
All you have to do is click on the email addresses you want. Then write a few lines and your name and hit send! Very quick, easy and painless. Please participate!
There are times. Many times, when I think of who my top favorites are, in terms of telling the truth. And I always, always find this difficult. But at this moment I would have to say my preference is, and not necessarily in this order, would be Keith Olberman, Will Rogers and Arianna Huffington.
ugh – chimpy’s on cnn speaking to the AL
Nice job Christy, very well said.
Fartacus on CNN – live from SLC American Legion-
-small talk- heh heh heh
“American Legion (the name) brings to mind the best of our nation”
-thanking people now for doin’ heckuva jobs
chimpy is a different guy when his speech is prepared, eh?
Truth squad alert. Bush in front of AL live now.
Old Coastie at 23 — not at my house — we’re watching Dora the Explorer and coloring this morning. :) Much, much better than listening to Bush this morning. (I just couldn’t force myself to do it today…I have a bit of a headache, and that would have made it worse.) Let me know if he says anything we need to deal with, would ya?
That was a heck of a commentary. I was sitting spellbound watching it last night. Not too shoddy for an ex-sportscaster.
Wish we would hear more of that. How did NBC’s Brian Williams let Bush off the hook so easily? Man…. “I never thought about Iraq before 9/11.”?!?
“we increased funding for vets more than Bill did”… will they ever stop running against Clinton?
Fartacus on CNN – still thanking people
as vets, all of u stepped forward when america needed u most… we owe u more than just thanks. we owe you support of the Fed Govt. my budget provides more than 80bil for vets – highest in US history. Helping vets is a top priority of my administration.
xyz 21
THANKS for the hints!
Still trying to figure out Spotlight, and haven’t had the courage to use it yet. (tho HAVE been pestering the old-fashioned way)
I’ll get it done one of these days….
wonderful modern contraptions, these toobz *g*
Give ‘em hell, Christy – you rock!
Didn’t know whether to be amused or apoplectic when I heard Bush say that this whole thing about Iraq and the larger war on terror shouldn’t be partisan or political…as Rumsfeld and Cheney and Mehlman and the rest of his minions were out and about doing exactly that. Mehlman explaining the Nazi references to O’Donnell almost made me drive off the road last night. Between that and his “adapt to win” meme – he’s still claiming that’s what the Bush administration is all about – I felt decidedly ill by the time I got out of the car.
I have had enough. I want real leadership, not one PR campaign after another trying to sell me failed policy by telling me I will be considered a stupid appeaser of fascists if I don’t buy it.
My only hope is that this latest campaign will be so offensive to patriotic Americans that it will die a quick death, and exact pain only upon those who had the chutzpah to think it was a “winner.”
What these PR events need is a gigantic papier-mache pig stationed somewhere near the event, with free lipstick for people to use to write a messages to this administration. It could go all over the country and end up in DC at some appropriate time. If Lieberman can be dogged by the Kiss, Bush and Gang can be “pigged.”
*xyz @ 21
Thanx – I missed any tutorial on the spotlight features and you’ve helped considerably.
OldCoastie at 30 — not so long as Bush’s father gets along with Clinton much better than he does his own son, I suppose. (And where is Sigmund when we need him on that one…)
Prairie Sunshine @ 28
This statement is true. The best bet is to assume that anything Bush says is a lie.
Fartacus on CNN – you showed the world america can always count on you
-going to continue pushing flag burning amendment
-fallen heroes act – ensures families wont have to endure protests during military funerals
Amen, Christy!
Yesterday, in the (fairly quiet) Blue America thread with Brad Miller (NC-13), I asked him @ 31 how, as a member of the very important Committee on Science in the House, he dealt with his fundie constituents when they get going in their anti-science mode (phrased it more politely, but that’s the jist of the question). His reply @ 40 was great:
My reply summed up his comments like this: “Humility, generosity, and a vision of caring for each other and especially for the poor and outcast . . . those are character traits and visions that are sorely needed in the halls of the capitol building. Well put, Congressman!”
How did the Preamble put it? “We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and insure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution . . .”
Emphasis added, as the times require. We need folks to stand up and uphold these principles – folks like Brad, like Ned, like Claire McCaskill (MO), like so many other progressive dems running against the Rumsfeld Republicans. Go Roots!
Any signs of Bullshit Protectors?
:-)
Christy Hardin Smith @ 36
I actually thought B. Williams did a pretty good job, considering… chimpy’s insanity just hung out there for all the world to see… Williams even made mention that Clinton had been to Kennebunkport many more times than shrub… the look on chimpster’s face was priceless…
I sent this along earlier…
Keith really knocked that one out of the park. We need to do everything we can to get as many people to read/see this commentary. The country is starting to wake up, and commentary like this can be like a cup of coffee to a populous still reeling from the hangover of the last few years.
twolf1 @ 38
In Bush’s view, it’s much easier to uphold a Constitution you haven’t read or comprehended.
of course veterans spending is up what with actual shooting wars going on with Bush…
Fartacus on CNN – images that come back from the front lines are striking, and unsettling.
-invoked 9/11 and other terrist acts
enemies of liberty come from diff parts of the world and they take inspiration from diff sources
*ilson46201 @ 44
while we whack the budget for the head injury clinic…
*ilson46201 @ 44
Sure, but what about adjusted, per-capita veteran expenditures? I’m not sure that getting your legs shot off is worth as much as it used to be.
This is chilling to me…
“Homegrown Terrorists?
“A worldwide network of terrorists?”
Sorry, folks, cannot listen to Bush today at the risk of my head imploding.

Doing some research on Lebanon crisis and response, thought you might find it interesting that Norway has earmarked funds for emergency reproductive health assistance and protection from and response support to victims/survivors of gender-based violence in the IDF populations. Reproductive health is earmarked for about 475K and violence is earmarked for 200K.
Also, found the most recent OCHA (UN humanitarian response guys) report.

interesting stuff.”
And, Christy, you have been having a lot of headaches, do you realize that? I know how easy it is to let this stuff slide when there’s a 3 year old around, but it sounds like time to listen to your body. Do you need a massage, a quiet walk, a visit to the eye doctor or a blood count? Just a little concerned. ;~)
Also, never heard back from you, did you get my email?
Judging by the responses to my instructions regarding “spotlight”, it would seem that the FDL community could definitely use a quick primer from an expert on the topic who has time to walk through the “spotlighting” steps for everyone again.
Democracy always has enemies. For some reason there just seems to be a part of the population that can’t STAND it when life is the best and most fair to most of it’s citizens.Heaven forbid we live in peace and create sustainable and humane communities.I’ve come to the conclusion those who hate peace and prosperity(again, for the most people, not the few)are criminally insane, but sadly alot of them also are in places of power. When they should have been laughed out of the public eye and placed on heavy medication or something, the second they made clear what they want.
We’re working on the second generation of people in this country to have practically ZERO civics education growing up.I think my generation(high school class of ‘78)may have been among the last to learn American History, how state and federal governments work inside America, read the Constitution(now that’s something that should be plastered on school walls in lieu of the 10 commandments,IMHO)and discuss it in class,or have actual school assignments that involved going to city hall, commission meetings, school board proceedings,to look at laws being passed by legislatures and so on.My kids sure the hell wouldn’t be learning any of this if I left it up to the schools today. That’s a travesty.I HAD to have a credit in State/Local Gov’t and another in Federal Gov’t to graduate high school. And you had to get a C to pass the courses. The bar was set at college level for juniors and seniors in civics classes. When my younger sibs went to those same schools a few yrs later, those requirements were gone.
This isn’t the whole problem,it’s just part of the overall dismantelling of the best we can be that’s taken place in the last 3 decades.Throw in media consolidation, the laws treating megacorporations as people(with more rights than you or I),the powers that be constantly pandering to the worst we can be(normalizing racism for example),and we’re in a mess.I don’t know how you educate people who’ve become so lazy and unable to be open and think for themselves. What breaks my heart is so many of my fellow citizens are selfish, they’d rather do things to piss off liberals(as the Freepi gleefully acknowledged being one reason to support the Alito nomination)and “get back at”us,rather than look at what’s going to be best for the most people in the long run. That’s the one thing I’ll never forgive today’s right wing for doing to this country. It’s cracked the foundation of who we are,and it’s going to take at least a generation to fix it.
Fartacus on CNN – “free societies are a threat to their twisted view of islam”
-the right of a self appointed few to impose their will on the masses
-this war will be long but will end in defeat (after much stuttering)
why doesn’t chimpy understand how insulting he is when he compares disorganized terrists with the Nazis? what the WWII generation went through was so much more than this nonsense…
Who was it, yesterday, who claimed jr’s voice wasn’t allowed in their house? *g*
I like your antidote, Christy & peanut.
Allied: did anyone catch Noron yesterday on Hardball, yucking it up over re-run of Brian Williams’ interview with the great ecelektical deliberationer, himself’s proclamation in re: re-reading habits & all?
Pot calling the kettle…. soooo bad it was hilarious.
Bush tied all these terrorists to Islam — I’m glad I’m a stone atheist so nobody could ever imagine me being a terrorist. You gotta believe!
Fartacus on CNN – there is a tendency to think the threat is receding and the war is coming to a close. that thought is comforting, blah, blah, and wrong.
the war in iraq is the central front in the war on terra

Here comes 9 / 11
Adie 55 – I saw that yesterday and thought it was curious that Noron and crew couldn’t stop laughing at chimpy… that even THEY had discovered what a great big joke he is… I actually found it encouraging…
Kentucky Woman @ 61
I may have a heart attack and die of not surprised. :-)
Morning All, Yes the BS is flowing fast. And the the sky is grey here in S.C. ??WTF he just called me a an enemy of the Nation,911, 911 etc.Iraq front in the battle of the Terrist. BUSH ALL BULL ALL THE TIME.
OldCoastie @ 30
Bill didn’t “MAKE” thousands more vets needing the funding.
Oh and how about that bit about cutting funding for brain injured vets?
An Angry Old Broad @ 52
“we will stop treating terrorism as a law enforcement matter” – still running against Clinton and the British, apparently
Fartacus on CNN – in the space of a single morning, it became clear the peace we saw in the middle east was only a mirage.
911 911 911
we r using every element of national power to confront al qaeda
fight them over seas so we do not have to face them here at home

That’s the Preamble of the Constitution, done by Schoolhouse Rock.
Olbermann threw down on Rumsfeld last night. Someone needs to throw down on the MSM who have been supporting this war by trying to appear balanced and non-judgemental in coverage. Many of the MSM people don’t tell the whole truth or shade the truth so as not to lose access to the people in power.
There comes a time when trying to look fair and balanced is not as important as telling the truth, access to power be damned.
Fartacus on CNN – we believe freedom is a gift from an almighty god
-democracies don’t attack each other
RevDeb @ 65
wha…? “people who (something) around the clock are less likely to blow themselves up”
Fartacus on CNN – we stand with the mothers and fathers of every culture, who want to grow up in a peeance freeance world.
over the past 5 yrs, we have begun to see the result of our actions.
-talking about how afghanistan went swimmingly
twolf1 @ 70
so why did Israel attack Lebanon?
I’m confused, Bush wants to watch us, listen to us, create an unitarian presidency and is this so we won’t be a free society? Bush should read the 9/11 commission report or at least have his speech writers read it.
“9/11 9/11 9/11…. we helped the gov’t of Afganistan replace the Taliban”
Seems like Chimpy needs a hair of the dog. Probably up late last night, sipping booze and flipping through Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”. You know, he reads so much, loves those compound complex sentences, the rich verbiage, the philosophical, social, and psychological insights. Dan Quayle recommended it.
Fartacus on CNN – forces from 40 nations are serving along side us troops. the days of the taliban are over (proving he doesnt read the paper)
now on the lebanon
Christy Hardin Smith @ 59
No worries, I just wanted to make sure.
Your brain organizational capacity is outstanding, given your busy world. I remember the challenge of coloring-and answering never-ending questions along with everything else that comes with curious little people. But I wasn’t blogging at the same time and trying to stay on top of world events! I just left at 2 to go to the hospital to work till 11:30; that was the easy part for me, those were questions I could answer!!
Whenever, C, no hurry.
“in Lebannon we saw the dictators of Syria take the country”
The part where Bush stumbles on the words is where the paper that the speech is written on is so warn out from using it over and over he can’t read those words anymore.
does the applause seem to be diminishing?
OldCoastie @ 71
Pray?
*ilson46201 @ 74
So Shooter could attack Iran, ya big thilly.
Fartacus on CNN – blah blah blah
terrist forces have no place in a peeance freeance lebanon
now on to the grave threat of Iran (everyone cower)
OldCoastie @ 60
I think Noron is like a chameleon. She changes the schtick to fit the people she’s talking with. Had the 2 guys stood up for shrub, she would have too. I don’t think she is much of an independent thinker.
zennurse @ 81
I was gonna say something else, but it probably would have been trapped in moderation…
:-)
zennurse – “pray” would be an appropriate response…
he’s on now to promoting the march into Iran…
Touting Afghanistan as a great success and now on to Lebanon and one of his other great successes.
Bombing people in oblivion one country at a time…
Demonizing Iran now. oh and clever cnn breaks in with a little breaking news ditty to tell us that Iran is continuing with it’s nukular enrichment.
mind control is fuuuuun.
Fartacus on CNN – NOOOKULER, damn that bugs me
cnn playing in to rove’s hands by giving IAEA details at bottom of screen while chimp talks about iran developing NOOKS
Applause tepid.
Could it be even the base has had enough of the Bush-sh*t?

man, I gotta stop watching this and go out and scoop up the puppy poo… (6 o’ one, half dozen of the other)
I went to C-Span and am watching Ahmadinejad.
Iran interfering in Iraq. Debunked. Time to do it again. CAlling Gen. Batiste, Gen. Clark.

I am right

Think I’m kidding?
Boom they’re gone!
Noron & co laughing so much at georgie was a what’s up with that moment. They were downright junior high giddy. Very peculiar. I sure have been seeing all kinds of meltdowns lately. The house of cards is very shaky.
Fartacus on CNN – talking about saddam now. world is better off w/o him.
in 3 years, the iraqis have regained sovereignty. they have cast ballots (and ended up looking like Barney’s proctologist)
twolf1 @ 70
That explains why he’s trying to lock it up in the inner sanctum to bring out only on high holy days.

Little Johnnie has a firecracker! If he had 10 pounds of gunpowder he could be dangerous! Shoot him now!
Oh. My. God. How can you all listen to that drivel – it’s like he’s reading bumper stickers out loud.
CNN has replaced Fox and the Presidim’s chief Medium Athletic Supporter. Now with extra soft elastic and less fibre. Too bad it doesn’t wick away the sweat. Or the smell.
Fartacus on CNN – re iraq – and now these enemies have launched a new campaign – to launch sectarian violence in hopes of starting a civil war.
i am embarrassed to report that thousands of iraqi civilians were murdered last month.
God, sounds like Bush is really throwing out the red meat to that starving crowd. Thanks to twolf1 and others for watching. I just can’t do it today.
JPL @ 73
A Unitarian presidency would be a great improvement over the delusional fundie president that we have!
Much love to twolf1 and others for suffering through this insufferable shit pogo-stick-propaganda, so that we don’t have to. Just reading your live blogging makes my eyes burn, much less my blood.
the audience reaction is one of…. sleepage? doesn’t seem like anyone is actually listening… when the chimpster hit that “American will” line, it should have been a great big applause (chimpster looked very hopeful)…
too much blah, blah, blah…
hahahaha! “America has a clear strategy”
twolf1 @ 104
What the fuck did he think was getting fired out of those guns? Nerf bullets?
Fartacus on CNN – just in: 2 bombs kill at least 18 and wound at least 75 in baghdad
america has a new strategery to help the iraqi people protect their people. its a crucial moment for the iraqi govt
on the security side, we are refining our tactics on the ground. we’ve deployed spec ops forces to capture or kill insurgents. zarqawi found out what they can do.
OldCoastie at 108 — did he actually say “clear strategy?” Good heavens — who wrote this dreck? Karen Hughes is seriously slipping if she thinks she can shoehorn somethng so obviously false into a publicly broadcast speech.
Keith Olberman made a solid commentary. I asked my wife to watch it, and she also loved it. I wish we could get every single American to watch it.
Things have been so rough in our home financially that I have to take on a second job, which greatly limits my ability to help otherwise. Somehow I hope our nation eventually climbs out of the nightmare that has been created by these neocon-artist.
kill, kill, kill remember the fear and get your bloodlust raging folks.
He is a heckuva cult leader, isn’t he? An enemy of life except for those in his inner circle.
Can’t wait for fool-in-chief give his upcoming address before the U.N. Assembly. Really. What is THAT audience going to do? I can see Blair standing all by himself clapping madly, hopefully, looking fearfully around…
Fartacus on CNN – baghdad security plan is still in its early stages. early results are encouraging. it’s hard work.
here at home we have a choice to make about iraq. some see iraq as a diversion from WOT.
OT TPMmuckraker is hinting that Byrd might also have a hold on the porkbuster bill. Have you heard any rumors Christy????
While Ass-in-Chief speaks, 18 just killed and 75 wounded in a bomb blast in Baghdad, where the real world happens to be located.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 110
Christy Hardin Smith @ 110
yup, that’s what he said with plenty of punch and vigor… and now he’s talking about us fighting terrists “in our own streets and cities”
Fartacus on CNN – we will not allow the terrists to dictate the future of this century so we’ll defeat them in iraq.
still, some want to pull out. they are patriotic, but they are wrong. we would b handing iraq over to our worst enemies. Saddam’s henchmen and terrists.
they would have huge oil riches to fund their ambitions.
if we give up in baghdad, we will be fighting them in out own cities. (thats why we needed to invest more in border security dumbass)
USA will not leave until victory is achieved (mission accomplished?)
the fighting there can be as fierce as it was at omaha beach et al.
a victory in iraq would be a crushing defeat to our enemies.
Listening to a history lecture from Mr. Gentlemanly C is like getting a lecture on family values from Michael Jackson.
Can’t we track down the geek who wrote his history papers and put him in the Oval Office instead?
Impeach = tough love for Fartacus
Put him out of our misery.
The key element of fascism – the element of it that insures that we the people are f**ked – is the collusion of government and big business.
We have bigger, better and stronger fascism in the USA than Islam could ever dream of.
Right now, we’ve got big bizness and the consolidated media giants it owns, the military industrial complex (owned jointly by the government and big business), the government and religion (including most of the Protestant groups and Catholics) ALL in bed together.
This is the definition of Fascism.
Since I refuse to watch Bush on tv, I’ll just put up a couple of other little things I found this morning that you might find interesting.
I love this quote from an article on counterpunch about how the Lebanese ignored Condi, erm, Kundara when she went to promote peace last month.
“I am sure that Condoleezza Rice, (called Kundara by many people here, which is Arabic for shoes) has no need for the pulsing life of Ramallah but I was glad all the same that she would only see it at its most depressing.”
This is a very helpful and well-written piece on Res 1701 describing the political chicanery and unanswered questions found in the language promoted by the UN and agreed to by Israel and, amazingly, Lebanon, and why there has been such difficulty getting countries to commit to sending troops for the UN force
.
“Brought under the microscope, what exactly does Resolution 1701 say? A line-by-line analysis reveals that it is as full of pro-Israeli holes as a Swiss cheese. It also has two significant pro-Lebanese holes. But the over-all weight of the resolution indicates that Israel holds the crucial card: whether and when to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory. Close study of the resolution also explains why Israel rushed troops across the border in the days immediately preceding its passage.”

Great post. I only caught the end Olberman’s commentary last night, but I knew it would catch attention. Here is hoping that it is only the beginning of some wider introspection from the MSM which leads to some real tough questioning of this administration. Rumsfeld was so utterly offensive I can only believe that this time Rove has gone too far and managed to piss off alot of Republicans along with the left.
psst– George you can’t bomb, rob, rape or torture people into becoming allies.

For a more clearheaded lesson on fighting terror and defending civil liberties, Ted Koppel’s going to have a special on that subject on the Discovery Channel on Sept 10 – here’s a Newsweek interview with him about it. Love the quote from Mora, and it sounds like it bears watching to me.

More about Iraq – albeit a mythical Iraq – than about Iran, which surprises me.
prostratedragon (if you’re here) – your #80 in the late, late night thread is the first evidence I’ve seen here that any pups are onto the real Armitage scent. Keep it up!
Staying the course is not a strategy. Keeping troops in a country is not a plan. The problem in Iraq is that Iraqis are killing each other- Clusterfuck’s idea is to help em out by killing an equal number from both sides.
Clusterfuck’s entire argument is “No one- including me- has any idea about how to get us out of this mess I’ve created” (BEAMS WITH PRIDE).
Really though– darkly ‘funny’ that our crazy cuckoo cult leader is in Jeffs’ stomping grounds.

Bellwether For a Bitter Election

KANSAS CITY — If you seek this year’s emblematic election, look at Missouri. In this bellwether state, which has voted with the winner in 25 of the past 26 presidential elections, the U.S. Senate contest between incumbent Republican Jim Talent and state auditor Claire McCaskill encompasses today’s political controversies.
(In full here.)
Makes me furious – it is an excuse to kill as many children and civilians as you want in blind bombings and levelled homes. It is the excuse for torture, rendition and instituionalizing criminal behavior within our DOJ and war crimes behavior within the DOD.
Of course, once you go ahead and decide to make a whole nation into one that embraces war crimes, torture and stupiditiy – then you really pretty much need to drop the law enforcement approach – disconcerting to see the POTUS in an ankle bracelet giving his speech from the Oval office.

TPM post “Iran Debate”
Have been busy with work deadlines, so I apologize if anyone has already posted this link.
And today, on an archives ListServ, I read about another administration plan:
In reports issued this week, it was revealed that the government plans to close 26 EPA regional technical libraries. At least 15 will be closed within the next thirty days. This action, taken by the executive branch without congressional authority, has been publicly announced as a budgetary constraint. Internal documents reveal the administrations concerns are to limit access to research materials on environmental impact of administration actions, and to limit the EPA’s enforcement divisions ability to prosecute corporate polluters.
Here’s the link Bush to Close Public Access to EPA Libraries
They just never stop. So we have to stop them.

What are our troops in Iraq sayin the play is? Sunnis are being massacred by the Iraqi troops the US is training. Shiites are being massacred by their neighbors- so your a 23 year old junior officer out on patrol. Where’s the play? Who do you attack? Who do you kill?

nice!
Here’s a quote – hat tip to myleftnutmeg:
Concerns about the senator’s return [to Washington] were evident in an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press.
“We should discuss his schedule when he’s in DC and whether it makes sense to go to Caucus events, etc. or not,” wrote a senior Lieberman aide to several other top staffers.
The memo sought input on 13 likely questions from the media about Lieberman, including whether he or his staff had tried to shore up support among House and Senate colleagues, and what kind of reception he expected from fellow Democrats.
“Once I have the rough answers from you guys I will turn this into a memo for (Lieberman),” the document said.
Top aides were still debating whether Lieberman should join Democrats at the party luncheon. Lieberman will appear at an awards ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday night, but aides provided few other details of his schedule.

Another problem with the “Omaha Beach” reference in regard to Iraq, at Omaha Beach the U.S. Army met the Wehrmacht’s battle hardened 352nd Division. Unlike “terrorists,” the 352nd wore uniforms which identified them as German soldiers.

Whereas Spartacus, a lowly slave, rose to lead the ranks of a rebel army that, literally, threatened the Roman Empire, the Chimpfuhrer is in no way in the same ballpark. Perhaps you meant “Fartigula”, a more apt and fitting model. A weakling that was born into a privileged family and was given, by mere accident of birth, the reigns of an Empire. He was utterly corrupt, utterly incompetent, utterly cruel, utterly egotistical, and utterly void of any redeeming quality.

Especailly if those Dems have been made to feel accounbtable to the grass roots instead of the beltway boys.
Shrub has aged more in the last 6 months than he did in the first 5 1/2 years of his presindency combined. And he has aged the most in the last 2 months. Since the Lamont win, Shrub looks positively haggard.
NEVER NEVER NEVER underestimate the power of this blogsite or of the grass roots in general.
CNN Alert…
A series of attacks in Baghdad has killed at least 39 people and wounded 115 within half an hour, The Associated Press reports.
Keith was brilliant last night.
This morning I had an appointment to drop my truck off at the dealer for some work on it. The dealer is about 4-5 blocks from the SL Convention Center where Shrub was speaking this morning. While I was waiting for my ride on the patio of a coffee shop nearby, Utah’s finest state troopers and SLPD motorcycle officers literally pull up all around.
And here comes the motorcade! Really it felt like seeing the four horsemen of the apocalypse riding towards me. I think it is the most sinister thing I have ever seen. As the motorcade approaches I think to myself: Crap! I should always have a protest sign folded up in my back pocket. Just in Case! You never know when the pResident might drive by. Luckily, I have been reading Conservatives Without Conscience by John Dean while sipping my coffee. So I closed the book and stood up and held it as my protest sign.
After the motocade passed. A gentleman that was sitting next to me asked my what the book was. He replied that he hadn’t heard of it. He jotted down the title and said he was going to buy it.
BTW Salt Lake is abuzz not by Shrub’s visit, but about the Protest Rally led by Mayor Rocky Anderson. Truth to Power Baby!
Because this administration has twice usurped power without being lawfully elected, they believe the laws do not apply to them. In particular the election laws. The true power of this administration lies in the hands of the neocons, of which President Bush is just a puppet. For the last 6 years we have been governed by a non-elected power.
Haaving a modus operandi of stealing elections, the neocons must be hard at work in devising plans on how to steal the next one. They are cunning and deceiving. They are of the mindset that even if they are thrown out of office by lawful elections, they still are the chosen ones to govern. It is imperative that the Democrats are prepared to fight for the lawfullness of this next election, under the assumption that every conceivable legal and/or illegal means to thwart the will of the electorate will be used by the opposition.

I care, Georgie and I ain’t no steenkin’ media! Lots of people gonna care, you racist thug– keep it up! Many I know are going to keep pushing this and you are not only not getting their votes, but you have activated them to work against you in a very energized way so that you can no longer represent the great state of Virginia!
thanks, twolf1, I needed that. ;)
I’ve not had time to read all the comments, but I did search, and didn’t see that anyone had linked this Dailykos diary with email addresses to support Olberman. I think most of these were also posted upthread by Dru at comment 22. Here they are from the Kos diary:

Sen. Lieberman expects cool response
WASHINGTON – Sen. Joe Lieberman, whose independent re-election bid has rankled Democrats, says he expects a cold shoulder or two from Senate colleagues when he returns to Washington next week

My thank you note went to Olbermann within ten minutes of the end of his broadcast. It brought tears to my eyes. I am so grateful that he had the courage to say what he did, and that he did it so eloquently, forcefully, and at length. He is beautiful when he’s angry.
And your post, Christy, is excellent. Thank you for spotlighting this (perhaps) seminal event. And for this:
Amen.
And thank you to TRex for posting the editorial in its entirety. What a treat when I opened up FDL this morning.

Help Overview
There are three steps to Spotlighting a blog post:
1: Aim – Choose who will receive the Spotlighted blog post
2: Focus – Add your comment about the blog post. Your comment is important because it lets people know why the post is significant to you
3: Shine – Send the blog post after reviewing your comments and the recipient list
Instructions
Aim
The Aim page lets you choose the individuals and/or organization to whom you are sending the Spotlighted blog post.
a. You can leave the “Print” box checked, to see just Print contacts. Or, to narrow it down, click the “Target Type” checkboxes, to concentrate on just Print, TV, Radio.
b. You can leave the “National” box checked, to national media representatives. To narrow this down, you may click the “Range” checkboxes to focus on one region; then enter a two letter state code.
c. Click “Update” to show the resulting list of targets.
d. Click on the name of a target on the left, and then click “Add” to move it to the right. Keep going until you’ve built your complete, customized list of targets.
Note: You may click “Remove” and “Clear” to easily edit your target
list. Click “Next” at the bottom of the screen to Focus your message further.
Focus
The Focus page lets you add your personal comment about the blog post.
a. Add your comment
b. Optionally, provide your contact information. It is recommended that you include your contact information. By identifying yourself, your Spotlight will have much more impact, particularly with political representatives.
Shine
This is your chance to review everything before the Spotlight is sent. If you want to change anything, just hit the back arrow on your browser and try again.
OMFG, I don’t know how many degrees of superb, stupendous, and excellent there are, but Keith, buddy, you have reached the absolute top. Each time I think you’ve reached the pinnacle of speaking truth to power (I hate that overused expression, but it’s the only one that comes to mind in my caffeine-deprived state), you outdo yourself in even more spectacular fashion.
WOW!
OT -The dude that jumped the fence at the Brit embassy in Tel Aviv this AM is still there and still threatening to kill himself. the situation has not been resolved.
On a recent FDL blog I was told if I don’t like
the opinions expressed here to start my own.
I have neither the talent nor the inclination to do so but one kind person suggested that I
further explain those things that upset me
and then perhaps bloggers could offer suggestions or comments or just tell me to go away.
General Casey said yesterday that it will take approximatly 12 to 18months more to have the Iraq security forces ready to go.As a veteran
myself who signed up a few 24 hours ago,we were given 90 days to pull ourselves together.
Then your shipped off to wherever.
My point is,we get 90 days to get ready to
go to war in foreign lands but the Iraq security(fighting for their own country get
another 18 months)We send boys and girls as young as 17. Good God they are not old enough to buy a drink, marching off to war.
It’s Insane~really~ Thanks Fran

There is a new thread up. So I would repost there, as it looks like we have been EPU’d. Don’t want to think you are being ignored ;)
fran,
I agree. It’s always the young and innocent, with patriotism burning in their hearts, who fight the wars our “leader” drag us into.
I’m confused, are you in the military now? Leaving soon for Iraq? Come back and talk to us. We’re a little testy these days, lord knows, but I welcome your footsie in the lake.
choochmac @ 279
Thanks~Gee I hope I don’t sound that touchy!
Mommybrain @ 280
I’ve already served Mommybrain. If I go back at my age were all in trouble~
fran,
well, we’re in trouble anyway. My 45 yr old neighbor says his Army Reserve CO told him he’s still on the list “for if things get really bad”, like if we decide to blast Iran back to the future.
Glad I misunderstood.
fran @ 278
I think you’ve expressed yourself quite well; do stick around! It drives me nuts that administration and military officials make these statements and are not immediately asked “can you cite any evidence that progress has been made in the past 12 to 28 months, and if not, what basis do you have for predicting improvement?”
BTW, if I remember correctly, you were just told that if you wanted different subjects covered here, to get your own blog, not if you didn’t like the opinions. (At least when I was around.) While the discussion can get heated, we’re pretty welcoming to different opinions here. We’re only unsympathetic to complaints that the hosts should post about different subjects than the ones that suit their interests and expertise.
twolf1 @ 246
Oh, is that why Felix the Rat went down in the polls? Because people don’t actually care about him being a bigot?
Ceee @ 17
Well, remember the stunned, blank look on his face (and the long silence) at the school when informed of the 9/11 attacks? Could it be that his mind was overwhelmed not by the audacity of foreign enemies, but by the mendacious treason of those actually running his own administration? Just a thought . . . .
Playing the victim card again, fran?
You came here the other day with a pretty rude comment about the topic of the post. A few people politely mentioned that you could start your own blog, if need be, to handle subjects of particular interest to you.
You wait a couple of days and then pop back up, moaning about how terribly you were treated here. I got yer number, fran. er, lo, er….
twolf1 @ 199
The US under Reagan funded and set up the contra rebels (freedom fighters) and attacked Nicaragua in total disregard of the UN voting against it. The only countries that voted to support the Contra war were the USA, El Salvador and Israel.
And fran, people here have been extremely nice to you and I don’t think you should repay their warm hospitality with false claims of mistreatment. That is unfair to the max.
While I realize this sounds rather over the top, I am wary of believing that this crew has any intention of packing up their tents and going home after 8 years. The lack of any obvious successor to Bush with sufficient political wherewithall to get elected leads me to believe that there is an alternative plan.
This would be to gin up another war(Iran, anyone?) and use that to allow Bush to declare a state of emergency, implement his omnipotent Artcle II powers and cancel the election. After all, Bush would say we must “stay the course” and can’t allow some whimpy would-be successor to undo all the “hard work” he has done. Moreover, this eliminates all that pesky election stuff.
I think this has been the plan for some time. It explains the nomination of Harriet Myers. It appeared to me that the only litmus test the Bush administration had when selecting Supreme Court nominees was fidelity to their extreme theories of exectutive power. Harriet clearly would have let Bush do anything he wanted and I’m not sure Alito is much better. It’s no surprise to me that Roberts was nominated after ruling in the administration’s favor on one of the Guantanamo cases.
I hope I’m wrong but this administration has never seen a law it isn’t willing to break and I see no reason why we shouldn’t expect the worst from Bush and his cronies.
I am hoping that the blogging community will encourage its readers to contact MSNBC and tell them that Keith’s sponsors will get first consideration when it comes time to spend money. I already have because I think this is the best way to encourage and thank such a valuable resource for all of us.

Jenny from the Blog @ 287
Amen sister, testify. Starting one’s own blog is quite easy and only takes a few minutes. Blogger
Excuse me, Jenny, but I think your response to Fran is waaaaaaaaaay off the mark.
Not all of us have the time in our real lives to sustain a blog. And we do have opinions. And stuff we care deeply about. And sometimes that’s way OT, and we can take it if someone points that out.
I really think you’ve misread Fran’s comment. And intent.
And I think Fran very appropriately addressed why he/she said what s/he did [with apologies to Fran, I make no assumptions about gender when women are being killed and wounded right alongside men in combat].
Prairie Sunshine @ 293
With all due respect, fran has been extremely rude, demanding, and trollish in the past. If s/he is trying to turn over a new leaf, I don’t think being whiny and self-referential is a good way to go about it. People don’t forget about the last time someone shit on their front porch – the shitter now has that much of a higher bar to prove him/herself.
Advice to fran: change your handle, start afresh, and forget the past.
one mo’ test
um … test?
Yo?
Prairie Sunshine:
Just so you know, I was not one of the people who suggested that *fran* start her own blog. That’s not something I tell anyone to do. As a matter of fact, I have never responded to anything *fran* says.
When *fran* came here a few days ago she jumped in and started cursing because we were not discussing the war dead in Iraq in that moment, implying that we do not care about the human toll. That in itself was a horrendous insult. Add to that the way she phrased her comment and it was a very rude package indeed.
No one faults anyone for a different opinion on topic, or even off topic, if they have a point to make. *fran’s* only point was that she didn’t like our discussion. Period.
I guess you had to be there. Anyway, take care…
And thanks, kurt and op99, at least I know I’m not entirely alone in my impression of the situation.
Knock knock …
Hiya lotus!
Hey, I only take umbrage when someone makes a false accusation against the nice folks here. I stayed out of the first go-round when it happened. :)
Oh looky — I can see me again!
Well, since I’m here . . .
Hi, y’all!
fran is a guy (an active or possibly retired priest, as I recall). Classically Irish in temperament, in my observation. He showed up a few weeks ago, and some of us had WOIDS WID ‘IM at the time, since he was then a total “Liebertroll” . . .
But then, would you believe, he hung around with us anyhow, and ended up solidly a Ned man! His brother has been quite ill lately too, so that may be part of his edginess.
Anyhow, I’ve become rather fond of him (us orneries kinda stick together an’ all).
I didn’t see how this all started today, but I can attest that fran’s style is to lead wid a big ol’ brogan, then hang around to long enough to pick up the rhythm and dance nicely witcha.
In my experience, that is; your mileage may vary . . .
This thread is many times superceded at this point but I can’t help myself from saying that Christy, this post is a friggin’ awesome coda to Olbermann’s piece. You wrote:
My uncle was killed on a Normandy beach and I don’t take his sacrifice lightly. God bless you.
