You may remember Donna Edwards, candidate for the House of Representives from Maryland's Fourth District, from Howie's initial introduction of her in Blue America back in June. Since that initial intro, Howie has done a couple of updates on Donna's campaign here, here and here.
I got to meet Donna briefly at the Take Back America Conference in DC earlier in the summer, and she was both impressive and enthusiastic about her campaign. And that smile is truly amazing in person -- I liked her on the spot.
Which is why I am happy to announce that Donna has secured the endorsement of the WaPo's editorial board in her race against incumbant Albert Wynn.
The 4th District, comprising parts of Prince George's and Montgomery counties, is heavily Democratic, a profile that meshes with Ms. Edwards's long involvement in liberal causes. She has championed a higher minimum wage, campaign finance reform and an array of environmental issues, and she fought for legislation to curtail domestic violence. Locally, she was an ardent opponent of National Harbor, the multibillion-dollar development underway in Prince George's, but she came around to supporting it when she was satisfied that it would include a balance of commercial, entertainment and residential components. Her assent removed one of the project's last major hurdles -- a fact that testifies both to her skill as an advocate and her openness to reasonable compromise....No wonder. As we've noted in the past, Mr. Wynn has often seemed more involved in playing the role of a kingmaker in Prince George's than in his duties in Congress. On key federal issues, he has cast himself as the most bipartisan member of Maryland's congressional delegation. That's great in theory, but too often his votes have been at odds with good government and the interests of his constituents. He has backed the estate tax repeal, a measure that benefits the richest Americans at the expense of the poor and middle class. He supported the Bush administration's energy bill in 2003, offering subsidies to oil and gas companies even as they were headed toward record profits. He has flip-flopped on fuel efficiency standards and opposed campaign finance reform. And he has tried to clear the way for casino gambling in Prince George's. All in all, it is a lackluster record.
On the war in Iraq, Ms. Edwards has scored points by attacking Mr. Wynn as Maryland's Joseph I. Lieberman -- a supporter of the war portrayed as too close to the Bush administration. Mr. Wynn backed the war at the outset, but he has since recanted, saying he was misled by bad intelligence. More to the point of today's debate, both candidates are calling for a U.S. withdrawal, a scenario that we believe would leave chaos in its wake.
Mr. Wynn insists he has been a successful pork-barrel politician; we suspect Ms. Edwards, razor-sharp and relentless, would be at least as effective. We disagree with her on some important issues, but we are convinced she would be the more forceful, principled and effective representative. And while her insurgent candidacy is an uphill battle, it should put Mr. Wynn on notice that voters expect quality representation in Congress, not just a local political boss.
If you can, please consider giving a little more to Donna Edwards' campaign. You can do so here at our Blue America page. Donna is doing a fundraising push right now to be able to contact more voters in her district through direct mail, television and radio buys -- so every little bit can truly make a huge difference for Donna's campaign in this last push toward the primary.
Howie has a fantastic Blue America chat coming up with Rep. Brad Miller of North Carolina at 5:30 pm ET/2:30 pm PT, so much more Blue America to come today. This is fast becoming my favorite thing that we do here at FDL -- and I just wanted to thank everyone for all their support and work on behalf of progressive candidates all over the country. It's amazing what a little hard work can do, isn't it? (And a HUGE thank you to Howie for all of his amazing hard work on all of this. Kudos, Howie!)

Did I miss the Rapture? Firedoglake is never this quiet.
Has there been any polling on this race? How much of an uphill battle is Edwards looking at assuming that she, like most netroots candidates, is an underdog?
Ouchhhhh. Talk about a loaded word. Good for the Post to not mince words.
Sam — I think everyone is still busily chatting on the prior Schumer thread. :) She’s actually been doing fairly well, I think — she’s picked up a lot of buzz in her district and they’ve been working really hard on canvassing the last couple of weeks.
EPU at 9 — yeah, I noticed that one, too. *g*
I really hope more of our Democratic candidates push the minimum wage issue. I really felt this issue could have been a winner in 2004 if only John Edwards could have better gotten his message out. Considering how often the Bush administration likes to trumpet the low unemployment rate, it seems pretty disingenous to continue claiming that paying folks a living wage will cost jobs. Jobs we have; it’s good-paying jobs we need.
I live in WI and many of our cities, Milwaukee, Madison and LaCrosse for example, have boosted their own minimum wages and it’s been very popular (except with the Chambers of Commerce, of course). As usual, all the doomsday predictions by business groups have failed to materialize. Madison’s unemployment rate is actually negative in some sectors.
I’d love to see Donna Edwards and others really make the economy a central issue, tied into middle class and working poor interests.
Thanks for recommending Donna. She looks quite impressive. I just sent her $250.00.
I get all “my” candidates from FDL, Gilliard, and Jesus’ General. So far, they’ve all been fantastic!
phoebes @ 13
Yay: thank you!
The Washington Post says “both candidates are calling for a U.S. withdrawal, a scenario we believe would leave chaos in its wake.” Just what in the hell is the WaPo’s definition of “chaos”? Do we have something different than chaos in Iraq now? Of so, call me extremely unenlightened.
Go Donna (isn’t that a great smile?)!

You’re welcome! Keep pitching. We’ll get some progressives in yet.
Donna Edwards’ thank you letter to me for my previous Blue America donation to her campaign is dated July 14th — Bastille Day, which I thought appropriate to both her mission and my support.
Gotta love a candidate who’s campaign colors are purple and anything else!
Does the WaPo have a different editorial staff for local issues as opposed to national politics? It’s hard to believe this is the same editorial board that wrote “A Good Leak”.
Mary @ 16
It’s Tom Coburn’s bill, too, and he’s “taken credit” for Stevens’ hold.

I promise to send something to both Ms Edwards and Mr Lamont after I get my allowance. Mrs klyde keeps me on a tight leash :(.
Just what in the hell is the WaPo’s definition of “chaos”? Do we have something different than chaos in Iraq now?
It’s a moot point anyway unless we can get a goodly number of progressives into Congress in November. Bush and Rumsfeld have been crystal clear that our troops are going nowhere while Bush sits in the White House. Congress could, of course, do something about that but we’ll need to see a whole lot of incumbants into retirement before that happens.
I agree with your criticism of the Post: how much more chaos is “chaos” in their estimation? I find it a little hard to believe that their are thousands of militants on both sides sitting out because of U.S. patrols. Maybe it will get worse if we pull out, but I guarantee it’s not going to get any better if we stay. Anyone still looking for a U.S. strategic victory in Iraq has missed the bus.
Wow. You go, grrl!
And a gentle reminder to everyone - the Blue America PAC needs some love, too. Trying to get grassroots advertising on-air for the great progressives that Howie compiles for us. (BTW, Howie is not JUST a GOD, he’s a genuine nice man! From the Recording industry? WHO KNEW?!)

1,257 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ JUST GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Hardin Smith:
Yeah, Go Donna!! …but it all may not matter if the “black is white”, “up is down” Bush fascists succeed in expropriating the political vocabulary and drop the big one on Tehan on November 6th.
While we are focused on fund-raising and political infighting to get it on on November 7th, our fascist administration is creating a Cloud Kookooland in the world media with it’s misappropriation of the term fascist to apply to Iran.
We simply hafta start callin’ our administration and the ruling party by what they are: fascists. Every Democratic candidate, encumbant or challenger, should be presenting themselves as anti-Bush and anti-fascist. The anger and frustration of the American people needs to be focused AGAINST the bad guys who ain’t in Iran or Iraq but are firmly ensconced in our nation’s capitol.
If the unmaskin of George Allen in Virginia has done anything it has exposed the real “base” of the Republican Party…the militiamen and Aryan Nation folks have been sayin for years that they are already placed in the halls of power. The pictures of Allen with the former White Citizens Council folks is just another public announcement.
The fascist base of the Republican Party makes up 20-25% of the population mostly south of the Mason-Dixon Line but also concentrated in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. These folks are gunna vote and they are already warmed up to hit the streets as shock troops and krypto-brownshirts to initiate political violence.
While we gnash our teeth and hike up our skivvies, tryin ta figure out how much damage Joe Likuberman is gunna do ta the Democratic challengers…Karl Geobbels-Rove is settin the table for a full-blown replay of 1939!
We hafta provide the mass of good Americans who are strugglin’ ta make it and who know something terrible has been happenin to ‘em with a one word answer to what is killin ‘em by inches: Bushfascism. We can not let another day go by with the Nazi propaganda machine accusing their opponents of bein’ what they themselves are.
So… GO DONNA!! But it all ain’t gunna matter one kernel in the corncrib if we don’t get the words right…we are all democrats, we are all anti-fascists!!
OK…I’m done now but I don’t feel better, please lsten to what I’m sayin or we’re all gunna wake up on November 8th on our way ta the re-education centers.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T BE AFRAID - BE MAD AS HELL!!
On Iraq, Edwards has it right as rain. Hillary does not. Better watch your step Senator Clinton. Many against the Iraq war, which polls now say are in the majority, will remember your feeble pro-war stand during in the primaries and the general election for president in ‘08.
just sent Ms. Edwards some bucks for her TV ads plus something for that cute John Laesch to buy a couple of gallons of gas for his campaign jeep…
Somebody needs to send Ted Stevens an internet through the tooobs letting him know that we’re hip to his shennanigans. He might get it be next Tuesday if there aren’t too many trucks out there…
:-)
OT - just in time for elections
Donna Edwards is just the breath of progressive fresh air that PG County - and Maryland - needs; Wynn - like Lieberman - has gotten all too comfy in his incumbency. And, I think her candidacy and appeal helps get out voters who will not vote for Bob Ehrlich, the current (and I hope soon to be lame duck) Republican governor and will also likely help whichever Dem (Cardin or Mfume) ends up running against current lt. gov Michael (the GOP tool) Steele for retiring Paul Sarbanes’ Senate seat.
I hope, I hope!
Mary @ 12:47 pm (#16) - Hard to believe Senator “I need bigger Internets tubes for my bridge to nowhere” Stevens would do such a thing, eh?
HILLARY and Iraq.
Hillary figures that she has no chance for pres unless she’s seen as a hawk on defense. Gen Clark can afford to be against the war- a woman can’t. Women who get elected to leadership positions are seen as hawkier than the men they beat.
So Hillary’s choices (if she’s right about this” are to argue against the war and get defeated as a female pacifist- or argue FOR the war and risk getting defeated as being in favor of a lost cause. Sexual politics at work.
We simply hafta start callin’ our administration and the ruling party by what they are: fascists.
You, sir, are shrill. SHRILL, I say! Every good patriotic American knows that fascism can never, ever happen here. Our Republican Emperor simply loves freedom too much to allow we common folk to dirty it up with our “civil liberties” and other such groundling concerns.
OT (sorry, late to the last thread…)
So let’s imagine for a moment that while they are manifold, among Joe’s faults is not lack of reptilian cunning. The following question must have come up in his thinking: what happens in the next race, should he win this time around? I’m assuming here he learned his Presidential lesson in 2004.
It’s really not possible to imagine running as a Democrat for Senate in 2012; the bitterness will always be there. He got elected by Republicans in 2006.
I don’t see that there is any political choice for him: he has to run as a Republican in 2012. If he plans to do so, why should he caucus with Democrats in 2007?
The only other path I can imagine him contemplating is the McCain-Lieberman ‘08 path. (Personally I think the odds of this are 0% but Joe does have the whole self-delusion thing going on.) In this case, caucasing with the Dems probably is what he would do (”Unity” and all that.)
It seems that Joe must either become a Republican for ‘12 or run against the Democratic presidential nominee in ‘08. Wouldn’t the party like to head off either of these paths? Or do they honestly think that Joe will be the winner of the Democratic primary in 2012?
Some math involving the number 51. The Senate is widely given about a 20% chance of going to the Democrats; and that is unversally believed to be a 51-49 chamber; 52 is simply out of reach. There’s an 80% chance right now of failing to be the majority. In the first case, it’s pretty widely believed to be 50/50 Joe / Ned, and I think the above is a fair reason to believe that there’s a 50/50 chance of which way Joe goes–independent of whether you piss him off or not. So “don’t piss off Joe” is at most an issue in 5% of possible outcomes. On the other hand, in the 80% chance that the Senate fails to go Dem, then 40% of the time the Gang of 14 is left intact and we have no way to stop George’s next SCOTUS nominee.
On the House side, Bowers is teling us 12-19, making about a 60% chance of taking it. Pull 3 CT races out and it’s 9-16, with a 25% chance of taking it.
Don’t piss off Joe pro: 5% chance of it contributing to Democratic control of the Senate
Don’t piss off Joe con: 40% chance of GOP controlled Senate with intact Go14; up to 35% decrease in chance of taking House control
Is breaking the Gang of 14, and up to 35% of House control, worth 5% of taking the Senate? That looks like an easy call to me.
Anne @ 33
Unless, following the lead of RGJoe, Wynn decides to let all the voters of his Congressional district decide again between him and Donna Edwards, in November. Thus driving up the turnout for voters who favor Ehrlich and Steele.
See how sore-loser candidacies to the right of progressive Dem primary victors favor the GOP, Rahm? See?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 1:22 pm (#36) - I don’t know what you’re testing, but when I hit “Quote This Comment”, it tries to refresh the page, and the “No New Comments” line is no longer in big, bold letters.
Norske is right. We can hammer the gop for being fascists. They fit the definition.
Once this gets traction in the blogosphere and left wing radio, it will get picked up by the sensationalist MSM. The wingnuts will have to defend it, which is a loss for them at that point.
Just for you, *ilson, a future Congressman and his jeep.

I’ve zapped some money to Donna Edwards’ campaign, but I’m thinking of sending her some more in the next day or so, since the primary’s less than 2 weeks off.
Can’t believe the WaPo actually endorsed her - up until last week, they hadn’t written diddly-squat about the race!
Go Donna!
Donna
wouldwill be representing my (original) home district. I knew a Donna Edwards in high school, but from her biography, It doesn’t look like it is the same Donna Edwards….Hrmmmm….I just went back and looked at my old HS yearbook and it may be the same Donna Edwards I went to HS went. Unfortunately, the biography on her campaign website is a bit lacking in the details of her youth, and I dont know just how old she may be (that would be a big clue).
Anyone know how old Donna Edwards is?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 29
New Yorkers can remember it on September 12, 2006 by voting for her primary opponent, progressive Democrat Jonathan Tasini.
RT @ 42
My bet is the WaPo Editorial Board had a sit-down with both candidates and she wowed ‘em. Coverage is decided in the “news” department; for this race, coverage may even be a Metro desk editor’s call. Endorsement and opinion decisions are made differently by different people about different issues, to different results (Howell’s law of the firewall).
Anne @

I agree. We need Edwards in office to actually HELP PG (and that wedge of Montgomery).
On the Ehrlich issue, removing him and keeping Steele out of the Senate seat have to be considered the primary concern of Maryland progressives and moderates. They’re both WAY out of step with most Marylanders (let alone progressives), despite what their rhetoric might say. For goodness sake, Ehrlich tried to sell of state park land to his cronies at bargain basement prices. Steele talks a good game about his independence, but his actions don’t prove this out. The man is taking money from some rather questionable places.
Show Hillary some Nedrenaline, New York Democrats!
GO, TASINI!
Peace in our time!
Excuse me for mini-hijacking the fabu Donna Edwards thread, but when my Tasini tag-team partner Oklahoma Kiddo tags me, I must jump in the ring, lol.
“Sexual politics at work.” Chauvinism is dirty business. And because of Senator Clinton’s need to show that she’s no cowardly woman stereotype, innocent old folks, children, and yes, women, have to die. And for what? For the Senator’s obsessive, insatiable hunger and thirst to be president.
zAmboni @ 43
Call or email her campaign office and ask. Is she originally from Greenbelt? I can name most of the high schools in PG, but only the ones that we’re in existence in the late 1970’s. I graduated from PG County Public Schools and played girls basketball and track & field. My impressions of the high schools (outside of my own, of course) tend to be limited to the quality of their locker rooms, gyms, and tracks.
zAmboni @ 44
Don’t know how old she is, but her website lists North Carolina as her place of birth (and where she went to college). She looked like someone I went to school with too, is why I checked hehe.
FYI - This is my district. There are Donna Edwards signs all over my small town of Cheverly and I see VERY FEW Wynn signs. But my little down is a very mixed neighborhood like Takoma Park in Montgomery County so it’s hard to gauge the overall temperment in Prince George’s County because we are so liberal here.
I do know that Progressive Cheverly is backing Donna Edwards and I think our town has been blanketed by these guys.
D and I had some friends over for brunch on Sunday and did our part to convince them to vote Donna and not Al. They did relay a story about the 2000 race were Al’s (at that time) soon to be ex-wife did a robo call where she blasted Al because he was marrying a white woman. I think that it back fired and he got a big sympathy vote out of that. Of course the fight between volunteers before the recent debate got HUGE coverage and it reflected badly on Al.
Here go a nice post about Donna Edward’s -

Slightly off-topic but mentioned in the link above is another VERY important race. The race for comptroller.
I was at the Western Maryland Democratic Caucus in Cumberland Maryland and got to hear Peter Franchot talk. He was great. Just so that people in MD-4 here on this site know to vote for Franchot and not Schaefer.

rwcole:
Your analysis of Hillary and the position in which she has chosen to place herself ( within the existential limits of “choice”) is right on and Chrystal clear…AS FAR AS IT GOES!
Hillary finds herself in this difficult spot with regard to strategic positioning, not just because of “sexual politics” but because of the existential demands of history.By that I mean:at this moment, history is demanding that leaders and those who would be leaders must cast aside their political self-interest and stand up against the forces that threaten our history as a civilized nation. Hillary is so thoroughly immersed in the tactical maneuverings of her own political life that she is incapable of seeing what is required of her…and, in my opinion, she is completely incapable of rising to the call of history. The demands of the moment have presented her with a test of character and leadership, and she failed. End of story, let’s get on with fightin’ the fascists without her.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T STOP TO PICK UP THOSE WHO CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHICH WAY THE WIND IS BLOWIN’!!
Christy, thanks for the link to Donna’s website!
If folks haven’t already, they ought to stop by there to see how a “real” netroots candidate makes use of the web to deliver her message!
The “Donna on the Issues” and “Endorsers” sections with links directly to the specific info is an excellent design that other candidates would be smart to copy!
Prof Poland
Agree that the dems chances in the senate are slim- but since Virginia and Nevada now appear to be competitive- there is at least an outside chance of the dems reaching 52 senate seats- now that’s a REAL longshot- but if events go the right way- it could happen.
There are a few recent events that favor goopers however.
Mortgage rates and gas prices declining.
Kudos to Donna and the Wapo gets something very right! Great post!
Go Tasini!
Webb for Senate in VA!
Ned!
Lots of stuff coming out today about that race. I linked to the Kos CCC stuff earlier. Now it seems that Allen and Paul Galanti (? sexual predator and swiftboater extraordinaire) have teamed up to swift boat Webb.

rwcole @ 35
If you make this about just the war, you lose, because they have all kinds of arguments that result in an antiwar position looking weak.
What you have to be against are the policies and mindset and worldview that got us into war, the failure of the administration to take every last diplomatic step, and that includes pulling the inspectors out of Iraq before they had completed their mission. You have to be against the decisions to abandon the hunt for bin Laden. You have to be against the prosecution and management of the war, once we undertook the engagement. You have to be against an administration that pulled out of or backed off of treaties and programs and efforts that were all designed to keep war at the bottom of a list of options.
You have to make them shut up every time they throw another false choice at us. You have to point out that none of the people responsible for the 9/11 attacks came from Iraq.
This isn’t just about this war, it’s about future wars. If you continue to vote GOP, what you are voting for is more war.
I went to Northwestern HS in Hyattsville, but because of busing, we had people in our HS from quite a bit aways. I cant remember where the D.E. I went to HS lived at the time. I originally ruled out the coincidence between the two because the D.E. I remembered didnt really look like the picture on the website.
That was until I just dug out my old HS yearbook…and realized I was thinking about the wrong person (from HS). In the yearbook she has the same smile, but a heck of alot more hair! Then think it could be the same person….but comparing a recent picture from a yearbook picture from 20 years ago is tricky!
I will have to upload a copy of the yearbook pick and let you guys decide (while I email her campaign site to see if it is actually the same Donna Edwards).

In complete honesty, Schaefer has lost his mind. He used to be quaintly eccentric (something of which we Marylanders are largely tolerant). For the last ten years or so, though, he’s been certifiable.
Franchot is currently my State delegate. He’s intelligent, responsive, and does a very good job representing an eclectic district. While most folks in the district are quite liberal, you have to balance every TYPE of liberal known. I’ve emailed him and received quick responses that weren’t form letters. I think in the one case it might have actually been him writing back to me himself. What a concept.
Does anyone have any opinions on Cardin v. Mfume? To be perfectly honest, I think either of these men would represent me just fine. Mfume has a bit of baggage in his past, but it’s WELL in his past. They both seem like reasonable, intelligent men. Hard choice. I almost wish one of them would do something nutty to sway my opinion. Almost, but not really. It’s nice to have a choice.
Prof Foland @37 - good stuff!
Cujo - people with clogged tubes tend to hold things in. ;)
OT - Edit this down or delete if it is too long and too OT, but I think it is really an important aspect. On the “strong on defense” front, people have pointed this out over and over, but Barney Frank did a really good job in the Globe and several others have blogged on his take. Dems were behind the Afghanistan AUMF, by and large, and still no one is talking of withdrawing from Afghanistan.
There are places where it is wise, and where it is idiocy, to take action. Even in Afghanistan, however, the Bush Administration is failing horribly. HORRIBLY.
After an intro, this link has a piece by Ann Jones on Why It’s Not Working In Afghanistan
It is a long piece, and a lot deals with items not just an issue in Afghanistan - phantom aid issues in general. But here’s just one of many things the piece discusses.
The US Builds A Road
Take the case of the Kabul-Kandahar Highway, featured on the USAID website as a proud accomplishment. In five years, it’s also the only accomplishment in highway building — which makes it one better than the Bush administration record in building power stations, water systems, sewer systems, or dams.
…even though other international companies had been ready to rebuild the highway for $250,000 per kilometer, the U.S.-based Louis Berger Group got the job at $700,000 per kilometer — of which there are 389. Why? The standard American answer is that Americans do better work — though not Berger which, at the time, was already years behind on another $665 million contract to build Afghan schools. Berger subcontracted to Turkish and Indian companies to build the narrow, two-lane, shoulderless highway at a final cost of about $1 million per mile….
Former Minister of Planning Ramazan Bashardost complained that when it came to building roads, the Taliban had done a better job; and he too asked, “Where did the money go?” Now, in a move certain to tank President Karzai’s approval ratings and further endanger U.S. and NATO troops in the area, the Bush administration has pressured his government to turn this “gift of the people of the United States” into a toll road…
…charging each driver $20 for a road-use permit valid for one month. In this way, according to American experts providing highly paid technical assistance, Afghanistan can collect $30 million annually from its impoverished citizens and thereby decrease the foreign aid “burden” on the United States.
At one end of the infamous highway, in Kabul, Afghans complain about the fancy restaurants where those experts, technicians, and other foreigners gather, men and women together, to drink alcohol, carry on, and plunge half-naked into swimming pools. They object to the brothels — eighty of them by 2005 — that house women trafficked in to serve the “needs” of foreign men. They complain that half the capital city still lies in ruins, that many people still live in tents, that thousands can’t find jobs, that children go hungry, that schools and hospitals are overcrowded, that women in tattered burqas still beg in the streets and turn to prostitution, that children are kidnapped and sold into slavery or murdered for their kidneys or eyes. They wonder where the promised aid money went and what the puppet government can possibly do to make things better.
At the other end of the highway, in Kandahar city — President Karzai’s home town – and in the southern provinces of Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, and Uruzgan, Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah is reported to have more than 12,000 men under arms and squads of suicide bombers at the ready. They ambush newly arrived NATO troops. The embattled British commander, Lieutenant-General Richards, recently issued a warning: “We need to realize that we could actually fail here.”
Tasini is correct. Clinton is not. Senator Tasini is the one. The “one” to serve New Yorkers, labor and the war weary, back-door drafted soldiers of Iraq who just want to come home to America. Now.
Norske - A long time ago, on an FDL thread now far, far away, you and I got into an on line discussion concerning moral relativism and the use of Nazi/fascist analogies/references/allusions to/for TEAM LOSER and its policies.
Nothing between now and then has changed my view that the use of Nazi analogies is not only misplaced - cause they’re not fascists, but it in fact weakens the very points you are trying to get across since the people you DO WANT TO REACH are not going to believe that TEAM LOSER are Nazis or some other flavor of fascism even if they were - which they are not, but that isn’t the point. Presumably you’re out to win friends and influence people - shouting Nazi isn’t the way to do it.
And again, on the moral relativity front, TEAM LOSER can be very bad (and there are so many ways to show that - incompetence, lying, corruption, etc.) all on their own - you don’t need to claim they are AS bad as the Nazis to make the point that they are in fact very bad, if not criminal, and should be thrown out of office if not prosecuted.
You have every right to continue to state whatever you want and believe whatever you want - but that doesn’t make it right or even smart - no matter how “loudly” you type it.
On another topic - your “Likuberman” glibness isn’t so glib. If you want to state that you believe that J-Lie is actually an agent of an Israeli political party, state it - and the facts that you believe back it up. Otherwise, it just seems like your stating: J-Lie is a Jew, all Jew’s are agents of Israel, ergo J-Lie is an agent of Israel - which at best is a really bad syllogism.
Republicans “support the troops” by cutting funds for brain-damaged soldiers.
Brain damaged soldier? Who cares…
… not the government, that’s for sure.
More than any other war in American history, the war in Iraq is sending home young men and women who suffer from closed-head trauma. IEDs, mines, urban combat, traffic accidents: all these things can lead to head trauma, and are, in increasing numbers. As a result, an entire generation of soldiers is returning home suffering from the sometime’s baffling effects of head injuries.
And your government is slashing the funding for their treatment.
Sayeth the Republican Party to America’s wounded vets: “Thanks for your service. Screw you.”
Whether through the incompetence of Secretary Rumsfeld’s Pentagon number-crunchers, or through the heartlessness of the Republican Congressional majority, it is now clear that the U.S. Military’s cutting-edge brain-injury research and treatment centers could have their budget slashed by over 50% this year.
This story in today’s Raleigh News & Observer [on edit: by reporter Jay Price] details the work that is going on at Fort Bragg’s innovative research center, and its companion facilities at Walter Reed and other places around the country. This work is vital to understand the nature of combat brain trauma and how to treat casualties and return them to a useful, fulfilling life:
Employees at the Bragg facility could not be interviewed for this story. But in an interview this spring for another story, E. Wayne Johnson, the program manager there, said it tests 200 to 300 healthy soldiers each month for such things as cognitive skill, reaction time, mood and military skills.
Its clinic, meanwhile, treats 30 to 60 soldiers a month, most with mild injuries.
The center’s research at Bragg and elsewhere isn’t just academic, Zitnay said. “It’s developing new helmets, it’s developing drugs we can use to treat memory loss, it’s developing innovative rehabilitation strategies,” he said.
The center’s work, for example, can help battlefield commanders quickly determine whether a soldier who has received a blow to the head is fit for battle.
But the real kicker in the story is this paragraph:
House and Senate versions of the defense appropriation bill would chop funding for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center from $14 million to $7 million. The center runs 10 facilities across the country, including one at Fort Bragg that has performed research and treated soldiers’ injuries since 1998.
“It’s just ridiculous,” said Sgt. Maj. Colin Rich, a Fort Bragg soldier who has been legally blind since he was shot in the head while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. “Whoever is cutting the budget must have a head injury themselves.”
“With the bombs, the gunshot wounds and everything else, their plate is full,” he said. “They need that money.”
The Pentagon asked only for $7 million and didn’t respond properly when congressional staffers tried to find out whether it needed more money for the program, said Jenny Manley, a spokeswoman for the Senate appropriations committee.
“The Pentagon needs to get behind the things that they want,” she said. “Otherwise, we’d just be kind of guessing about what they really need.”

Ms. Edwards was one of several politicians featured on WAMU-FM’s “Maryland Politics Hour” today at noon. The host discussed her WaPo endorsement, and Donna did a great job of stating why she deserves to win. A few minutes later a supporter/campaign worker called in to praise her. [I wished somebody loved me half as much as he does Donna!]
The show is likely to be rebroadcast at 8pm on FM88.5 in the DC area. Or you can listen in at http://www.wamu.org Enjoy!
(P.S. I sent her money a few weeks ago. It’s time to do it again.)

Cardin has done a great job in the House, and while I think Mfume would also do well (and he did well when he was also in the House), I think Cardin has a better chance to beat Steele. Polling - if you can go by that - shows Steele beating Mfume, which - I’m sorry - is not the result we are going for.
As for comptroller, Schaefer has to go. He’s old, he’s losing it and he’s an embarrassment.
Either Franchot or Owens would be a welcome change, and a voice for the people, especially if - God forbid - Ehrlich wins again.

Played there. I went to Friendly. Because of bussing, we had students from near the DC line, across the cross roads of Oxon Hill-Camp Springs-Ft Washington (my area), down to the expensive houses by the River in the “real” part of Fort Washington. Quite a long skinny area to draw from.
I’m glad Donna came around to supporting National Harbor. I’m really hoping it brings back old Oxon Hill. I remember when the National Harbor site was called Gravel Bay, named because it’s an old river side gravel excavation area.
why not just Email the Edwards campaign and ask where she went to high school? keep life simple !
I will vote for Senator Hillary Clinton to be president in 2008. If she’s the choice I have to work with. But if she doesn’t change her view on Iraq and generally the whole Middle East situation. I won’t like it. No. Not one bit.
Already did, waitin for a reply :P
To Terry in Maryland @ 58 - I used to live in Takoma Park, where I’m guessing that you live, for six months last year and yeah it’s pretty damn progressive.
When at the Western Maryland Democratic Caucus about six months ago I got to hear Cardin, Mfume and the rest of the Senate candidates. Cardin is okay but a Dem machine guy. When Mfume got up to talk he was great. Humble, honest and direct. EVERYONE hushed when he spoke. It was pretty amazing because most of the people in that room were Dem party people and not regular folks like me and my gf. He was the only candidate that affected the room like that and that included O’Mally (who IMO has national aspirations after listening to him speak) and O’Mally is a phenomenal speaker.
FYI, we are going to make the Western Maryland Dem Caucus again next year. It’s the place to be if you want to hear, talk to and compare all of the state candidates next to each other. We got to hear ALL of the candidates running for US Senate, Governor, Attorney General and for the local congress districts. I know that the folk putting on the Caucus are doing their very best to organize the four very rural counties in the Western Maryland panhandle. Hopefully I’ll see you there next year.

I hadn’t seen the poll on Steele v. Mfume. The pundits have been saying that it has to be be Mfume to take on Steele, else the “black vote” will be split. The idea of a “black vote” is actually insulting, isn’t it? As if people can’t make up their own minds or are automatons or something.
I think some of the ministers of the big churches are playing at supporting Steele to get more out of the Dems, though.
If Ehrlich wins, I’ll just cry. He’s a Gingrich clone masquerading as a moderate. He’s also pure-D shameless in his manuevering.
I have yet to see Hillary see a war she didn’t like…

Used to live in Rockville, MD in Montgomery County. Glad to see a candidate of Edward’s caliber running for the House seat.

Beautiful Downtown Silver Spring here, but I do cut through Takoma Park on East West Hwy (ok, so the name changes there for a few blocks) quite frequently.
Takoma Park out-progressives us by a mile. You all have people heating their homes with corn cobs (no joke). We’re just a joyously diverse and highly liberal area that finds it hard to believe that we’re once again popular as a shopping and dining option.
So Hill would have done all the wars but better, different, what?
dang - my quotes are still inverted.

Mary at 60:
Another fine post that deserves a round of applause!
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Mary has what it takes to be a Front Pager!
Ta!
1,257 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
EPU:
I remember that discussion and I was reminded of somethin Al Ginsberg said in a little get together at a state college in Minnesota in 1969(it’s now a “University”)…I was sittin’ 2 feet from ‘im and was jest a few months outta the Army and a 12 month visit to hell. I was VERY much energized ta take to the streets with other folks to end the war and impose democracy on an unwilling or disinterested American population.
In the context of “intellectual discourse” and what we might call “academic precision of language”, Mr. Ginsberg said to beware of getting bogged down in intellectual “faggot hassles” (this phrase is Ginsberg’s alone). What you and I were engaged in back then was a “faggot hassle” and I apologize for draggin it out…I shoulda known better. But here is all ya need ta know about the term Nazi and the term fascism: fascism is the larger body of political actions and structures and Nazi-ism is a specific strain of the larger disease.
Now, let’s be done with the ridiculous “faggot hassle” of tryin ta create some kinda pristine intellectual touchstone of definition as though that will, willy nilly make the bad thing disappear.
We are engaged in combat at the edge of the world here with an enemy that is FASCIST and uses lessons learned from the NAZIS…use the word to help those who are threatened with extinction to see clearly what it is that is killin ‘em!!!
Good God…can’t you see beyond the end a yer nose there EPU??!!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND SAVE US FROM INTELLECTUAL QUIBBELING!!
I told my Congresslady that Evan Bayh had finally come out and said if he knew then what he knows now, he would have voted against the war. She just smiled and said Evan should have come accross the Hill and asked her — she voted against it before the War… a slight majority of House Democrats voted against the War !
Mary is front page worthy. And if she makes, think of the positive message it sends to all the kids in blogland - that someday, maybe they too, can make it to the big time.
If you do get it Mary, all I ask is that you include a lot of footnotes.
re-reading Mary’s 60:
Failing in both Afganistan and Iraq, after Israel’s failure in Lebanon, will be a catastrophe of global proportions. The latter has emboldened our enemies, and the former will have us racing for our shores: Fortress America. I simply cannot see what definition this Administration has for success, though.
If we read their actions and not the words, chaos is clearly their target. A world-wide rumble, which W thinks we’ll win. I dunno, do the odds favor our success?
Evil Parallel Universe @ 80
Good one, EPU.
Love ya, Mary, and I’m down for some front page action from you too.
Mary thanks for linking that Ann Jones article– I read it yesterday and sent it about on the internets to those friends I have that care. We lost there and everywhere with this fool. No good has come of our war there– it is forgotten by this bunch, pushed aside and made more miserable.
