Yep, George Bush was yukking it up with the locals who’ve managed to move back to NOLA today, saying incredibly useful things like "you can’t rebuild until you remove the debris." Well…duh.
Somebody give this woman a huge tip:
But local frustration was also on the menu as a waitress took Bush to task over the botched government response to the killer storm, which ravaged the US Gulf Coast and killed more than 1,500 people and nearly drowned this party city.
As Bush tried to squeeze his way through narrow spaces between tables, waitress Joyce Labruzzo asked him: "Mister President, are you going to turn your back on me?"
"No, ma’am," Bush said, with a laugh and a pause. "Not again."
Joyce Labruzzo got to ask George Bush the question that a whole lot of folks have been thinking since his Administration took office. And his "Not again." response is altogether more honest on so many levels than I would ever have expected, isn’t it? Too bad it was likely a slip of the tongue, and not some newly found awareness on his part. (H/T to Holden of First Draft for the link to this article.)
I swear, if I were in NOLA, I’d be having pancakes for breakfast every single day for a month, just to keep giving that woman a big ole tip.
And I kid you not, in his speech from New Orleans today, the proposed solution from George Bush? The big fix? More leases for offshore drilling. Heckuva job…oh, hell…I can’t even say it any more. Disgust doesn’t even come close to describing my mood today.
(At least we have thus far been spared more joking about the Shrub’s days of drunken debauchery in New Orleans in his misspent youth. That’s probably why they sent Pickles along in the sidecar.)

Clusterfuck!
Oh, if only we had more people like her at these staged photo ops…
Having just forced myself to listen to the speech, I am now even more cranky than I was at the start of the day. Am feeling most grateful for a cuppa hot tea at the moment.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 3
The worst part about watching his speeches is knowing that there are people that take every word he says as truth. It is a bummer to listen to him for the educated.
I just heard the “stats” on NOLA from Christy Harvey on the Franken show. Sickening. Infuriating:
– Less than half of the city’s pre-storm population of 460,000 has returned, putting the population at roughly what it was in 1880.
– Nearly a third of the trash has yet to be picked up.
– Sixty percent of homes still lack electricity.
– Seventeen percent of the buses are operational.
– Half of the physicians have left, and there is a shortage of 1,000 nurses.
– Six of the nine hospitals remain closed.
– Sixty-six percent of public schools have reopened.
– A 40 percent hike in rental rates, disproportionately affecting black and low-income families.
– A 300 percent increase in the suicide rate.
Eighty-four percent of New Orleans residents rate the government’s recovery efforts negatively, while 66 percent believe the recovery money has been “mostly wasted.”
From Think Progress.
If photo-ops were horses then beggars would ride.
If life were a phot-op then maybe Bush really would be a good President.
And oh, by the way, “Photo-oping is hard. It’s hard.”
Hugh @ 7
(heh heh heh)
It’s all so freaking sad, controlled demolition of the down and out. Waitresses of the world, stand proud!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 4
Oh, your poor ears! I have to be extra-something (crazy? medicated? deaf?) to listen to an entire speech…know what’s worse, though? I can “hear” his voice when I read what he says…
If I had a way to get it to you, I’d send you some honey from my husband’s bee hives – really takes the tea to a whole new level of comfort…
Good for that woman!
You know that Bush didn’t give her a tip!
BTW, appropo of nothing in particular. Rita Crosby gives us the PERFECT pictorial representation of our nation’s press
thanks, mod
I don’t wanna be morbid, but do y’all remember one year after the tsunami, when the death toll went way up because all those souls who’d been missing were declared dead? Aren’t the “missing” souls from Katrina due for inclusion in the death toll, like, today? And why isn’t TradMed talking about this?
Oh, right, John Mark Carr. And, now, sparkly new news: Warren Jeffs has been captured!
Damn them.

I’ve dropped my daily stimulant down to chai cut with hazelnut milk, and even that is too stimulating for dealing with chimpy.
Listening to him feels for me like listening to psychotic patients with formal thought disorders (the sort of non-logic displayed by people with severe diagnoses such as schizophrenia).
The whole time chimpy is talking, some part of my brain is working to attempt to fill in the logical gaps. Exhausting work at times.
Thanks to our friends the plants for jasmine pearls green tea and spikenard berry tincture.
Makes even a morning of chimpy lies at his second-worst crime scene tolerable….and I can still look forward to the woods!
I must say though. I did enjoy CNNs botched mic thing during fartacus’ presser.
Let me just say for the record: listening to an entire Bush speech is not the way to make your headache feel better. Blergh.
twolf1 at 15 — yeah, what WAS that? It sounded like Kyra Phillips…wonder if the folks in the booth did it on purpose or if it was an accident? (Oooh, intrigue at CNN…news at 11…)
How waffle is this prez? Someone take a pix of this fabulous waitress, tag it with the “turn your back” comment, and paper the whitehouse walls!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 17
I dunno but I hope it turns up online. I’d like to get a better listen. I think it was Kyra too, talking to some unknown stage hand/producer.
I bet my nonexistent white stripes that it was Kyra.
It would be funny if it weren’t so infuriating, and then I start to feel my brain begin to soften and I have to change the channel.

Atlanta right now is 88 with 63% humidity but exercise does wonders for the stress level. Christy you are amazing to be able to listen to the whole thing.
Bush’s repeated invocation of individuals and groups (especially “faith-based”) who stepped up has really gotten on my last nerve. The willingness and ability of individuals to help out in the recovery efforts does not relieve Bush and the federal government of its obligations.
Heroism on their part does not replace the failure on his part. It’s his failures that made much of their heroism necessary.

Highlights: The clip starts with what sounds like “ASSHOLES.” Then Kyra talks about, presumably, a boy of some sort: “No ego… you don’t understand., just a really passionate, compassionate human being. And they exist! They do exist. They’re hard to find—”
http://www.wonkette.com/politi…..197383.php
Peterr @ 38
The abdication of governmental responsibility implied in that suggestion…
How’s about we just turn over our police & fire departments, prosecutor’s offices, schools, libraries, highway construction and national security to “faith based” groups?
The worst is, the current administration would probably find that a Cracker Jack idea.
For all musicians- check out this music/politics analogy. Look at the infamous Katrina -era photo of Bush ‘playing’ the guitar given him by Mark Wills. From what I can tell, he’s fingering a G-major chord, but one fret too high. So it looks like he knows what he’s doing, but if you actually heard the reality, it would sound like shit. I leave it to clever writers to expound.
hmmm– seems after much discussion today that we do indeed have a very complex preznit– afflicted by NPD, sociopathy, and messianic delusions.
If I knew about the mic snafu, I might have listened to the whole speech. Somebody needs to ask Kyra why the woman is always the control freek and bitch. Does she have inside knowledge of that. The link to Wonkette sure can brighten an otherwise dull day.

left blogostan is reading WAY too much into the “not again”. There is no way the bushliar-criminal was referring to not protecting NOLA during Katrina or supporting NOLA since. He was merely recognizing that the waitress is not intimidated by his fearsome presence and not someone to turn your back on. The “again” referred to the moment of the situation. (It’ll be a cold day in hell when the bushliar-criminal ever acknowledges in any small way any failings on his part or accountability for the destruction he has caused.)

Oh, I doubt it had anything at all to do with answering her question about Katrina, inadvertent or not. I suspect as he was squeezing his way thru the tables his back was turned to her. FARTACUS!
From another forum I sometimes frequent, here’s a right wing nutjob’s reaction to the Brian Williams show on Katrina:
“Did you see the show.. my statement was dead on. Whitey Doesn’t get it. Whitey screwed us over and now Whitey is the reasons for all the problems in NO.
What happened to personal responsibilty. State and Local responsibilty? Federal Responsibilty. As near as I can see…the American People were the ones to the rescue… that includes White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc…
For Brian Williams to promote the fact the Americans are Racists…Deserves nothing more than to be slapped across his pathetic little minded head.
The more the story gets promoted as a “Racist” situation.. The Least I care about it. If that is empathetic than so be it.
When the Tsunami hit India and Sumatra.. was that story told as a “Racist” Story..No! So we have a hurricane that hit an an area largely populated by Blacks.. A Hurricane that there was ample warnings…Nearly a week…
and it gets turned immediately into a racial issue. I’m quite shocked that Brian Williams and his guests just did not come right out and state “Katrina was a racists hurricane!” Yup.. Those Swirling Clouds were White on that Radar Screen. That hurricane was indeed..Racist!”
These people live among us….

If true, the inversion is fascinating: a first position G chord bracketed with sub-dominant roots (the Ab on the 1st and 6th strings) as well as a flat VI (Db) voiced on the A string. I’m reminded of some of the extraordinary voicings of Oscar Alleman from his 1930s recordings (in which dissonant notes of passing chords would be extended as a melodic device to great effect), as well as Syd Barrett’s magnificent 1/2 step drop of a first-position E in “Astronomy Domine,” which, though a simple device, suggested enormity and inevitability.
Given the complexity of the harmonic intervals, as well as the ringing tone of the “open” strings, the total effect would sound like nothing less than total shit.
It’d be innerestin’ to see if there’s a spike in FDL Paypal action ’cause you put up “Tip Jar” as the post title. (top of the righthand sidebar, people) :)

OJ – Read it. LOL Can I get a large drink with my McFascism to go?
Seriously, there are IMO (and I know this doesn’t sound as hearts and flowers as it should) some elements of fascism in fundamentalist Islam. I think that about most fundamentalist religions – where state and corporation merge in the Mussoline def, some recipes do call for adding religion to taste as well. Islam, in the fundie aspect, is about an all encompassing system, where goverment and law is subsumed and made one with religion. OTOH, that’s a fairly fundie Christian aspect too. Let the Old Testament set the law.
It’s so very odd that people who froth at the concept or content of anything “liberal” think that they have any alternative to offer to radical islamic fundamentalism. What do they think combats fundamentalism? Even buying into their “islamofascist” terminology – isn’t liberalism pretty acknowledged to be the “anti-fascism?”
Ugh.
I was kind of getting at neocons, though, and “new” (neo) kind of fascism. *g*

Wouldn’t worry about more oil leases off of Louisiana, nor care if they throw a pittance into wetland development. (I know that’s not the point of your mentioning this crass comment of W’s).
There are no end of offshore facilities off of La. And wetland development is a complete boondoggle. (Florida on the other hand should fight this crap toth and nail because they actually have beaches and depend on tourism. Even Jeb gets that.)
Didn’t see W’s speech. But some are suggesting that some heckling occurred, and that W had a frustrating time with this little photo op. Did you hear any of that?
Cuz, I don’t see why W wasn’t confronted by an army of angry New Orleanians at every turn.

In most human primates, the gut is home to the second largest aggregation of neurons in the body. Chimpy’s baseline performance is consistent with a reversal of this usual ratio… and hence in his case the syndrome may be most accurately construed as a net increase in neuronal density.
For this reason, the term “elevation” – though paradoxical with respect to local gravitational norms – may best describe the functional result of chimpy’s unique variant of toroidal syndrome.
Alhtough medical nosologists will – as ever – have the final say in the matter, “rectal-cranial elevation” or “anal-cranial enhancement” may best describe 43’s unique approach to his Presidential orifices.
See why here.
So, correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t more offshore drilling promise to further screw up the wetlands? (Sorry if this has already been answered. If I read all the previous comments, there’ll be 100 by the time I get to the end. I’m just not that fast a reader. Thank God my retention is good.)

Another example of the creative ways liberals think of to end this Constitutional Crisis we are now in. Damn ‘the man.’
They have many of their activities at theyesmen.org.
Mary – Aren’t you really pointing out the irony of fundamentalist Wingnut Christians (who want faith-based everything in this country) calling fundamentalist Wingnut Muslims fascists for wanting to impose their religion as the law of the land?
I keep making this point – and am going to keep making it, even if I bore myself: There obviously is a disconnect between TEAM LOSER’s perceptions of reality and the majority’s perception of reality: Iraq, Katrina, etc., etc. More importantly, there is a disconnect between TEAM LOSER’s perception of the public’s perception of TEAM LOSER’s reality.
But how is a debate about alleged religious control of government good for TEAM LOSER? B/c they put the word Islam in front of fascist? It raises a bigger issue for them – which is the issue of separation of church and state: and it begs the question of how TEAM LOSER’s christofascism is different or better than islamofascism – other than not being islamic ( which may be good enough for TEAM LOSER and Wingnuts, but I think will trouble the majority of Americans).
The more they try new tacts and ever greater lies to defend themselves and their policies and their reasons for their policies the bigger and deeper their hole gets. Let them keep digging.

1,256 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Harden Smith:
Any word from Jane about Elliott’s pathetic shot at her over at Huffingtonpost? Is she gunna respond?
KEEP THE FAITH BUT DON’T BE AFRAID OF ‘EM IF YOU’VE HAD YER SHOTS!!
Yes, Margot, IIRC, it was on at least one earlier thread. It never hurts, however, imo, to link several times to good news.
It seems to me that a minority of people who were left under 10 feet or more of water were white. Yes, the lower 9th was predominately black. And much of New Orleans is black. But St Bernard Parish was destroyed behind the same levees that caused the 9th to become a clogged toilet bowl. These people tend to be left out of the story.
I just read three opinion peices in various newspapers. They focus on the plight of African Americans. There lives are destroyed. There is nothing to return to. And I admire everyone trying to rebuild in light of all of the uncertainty, the vagarities of the LRA (the reconstruction agency that will pass out $8 billion to cover damaged property).
The biggest racial divide in terms of compensation is that the government compensates for losses. If you don’t have anything (i.e., were not a property owner) you don’t get much. This is where the blacks tend to get really screwed. Many didn’t own. Rents were low, as low as $200 a month. Those prices are not coming back anytime soon, and as far as I know, the government is not going to provide subsidies for rent equivilancy. People on fixed incomes or otherwise limited are screwed going forward.
I am concerned that focusing virtually all of the media’s and blogosphere’s attention of the plight of the African Americans introduces a racial wedge in the discussion. Pain is universal, comparisons are meaningless in terms of individual pain. The hurricane was not a “respector of persons”. It exposed historical racial inequalities, many of which are the result of failed political policies starting with slavery. But the hurricane itself was indescriminant. There are many Catholic, Pentacostal and Baptist churches that are just as destroyed as Mr. Binkey’s Adult Superstore in St Bernard.
I don’t know who has it worse, the family that lost everything but is ineligible for additional government compensation, or the family that has a piece of dirt with a concrete slab, 2×4 walls, and a roof — with a potential payout of up to $150,000, which will mostly flow to Wall Street to pay back mortgages (which technically are not in default as no demands have been made). Both have lost thier social fabric and neighborhood. One is saddled with something to rebuild (but may not have the resources to do so), and the other has what Kris Kristoferson called Freedom – “just another word for nothing left to lose.”
These types of opportunities and freedom belongs to all races in southeast Louisiana, not just blacks. And if you were there now, regardless of your race, you would feel the pain too. Most of the time I spent there just made me nausious. And I was only there to observe.
Darkblack!
As always, brilliant.

Ann in AZ says
“doesn’t more offshore drilling promise to further screw up the wetlands?”
The wetlands need to be fed by silt from the Mississippi River. Due to the dikes and levees, that silt is being sent further and further into the Gulf. Without these replacement soils being deposted by natural river flows, creating natural barriers, the salt water comes in unchecked and destroys the freshwater eco-systems.
Back in the ’20s, the lower Mississippi was about to change channels, which would have left NOLA about 50 miles from the river. The Corps of Engineers stopped that economic disaster by sacrificing the eco-system and building river dikes. Today, the river channel and wetlands extend too far into the Gulf to come back unless we are unwilling to unplug the Mississippi River. This would be like passing a law that everyone has to drive hybrids or bio-diesel cars…in other words, it ain’t gonna happen and the wetlands are as good as dead.
Medaka @ 28: Thank you for that. That covers it pretty well.

Addendum to # 115
Even if TEAM LOSER’s original plan was to use “islamofascism” as one of their bigoted “code” words to slander all of islam, they still wind up digging a hole. Remember, damned if they do, damned if they don’t, although they are more damned by their doing.
In fact, they should all just shut the fuck up and quit.
EPU @ 143– agreed!
you’re welcome, T.
to follow up on dead last’ comments…
There is a large seasonal dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico from all the pollution (I believe principally attributed to the run-off of fertilizer/farm chemicals) that end up in the Mississippi. Even if the dams are removed and the Corps “re-engineers” the Mississippi (better than they did the levees, we hope) and some of the conditions for the return of the natural wetlands occur, it would take substantial additional changes in farm/other practices upstream too for their resurgence, IMO.
Old Sow @ 132
Huh..not for me either. It was working last night. Wonder if Ned Lamont hacked it? Mmmmm…darkblackberries…Mmmmmm…
While Katrina was going on I went nuts. I couldn’t believe that our government was letting this go on and on without helping those poor people. I found I didn’t really know anything about FEMA and used all that adrenaline to research what in the hell happened. Of course we know now that what happened was Bush ruined it.
Naturally I saw a zillion posts blaming the state, city and parrish, but I couldn’t believe that was the story and it wasn’t.
During that research led me to a document that I would like to share with you because it shows the dark contrast between FEMA during Clinton and FEMA after Bush. This is about the Northridge earthquake.
http://www.itsdocs.fhwa.dot.go…..13775.html
Now scroll down to appendix A and check out the timeline. FEMA responded with minutes. Not hours, not days, minutes. So the next time some Bush apologist tries to blame Blanco or Nagin, just point out that FEMA started responding to the earthquake before the governor or president declared an emergency. This is how a good disaster agency should work.
BTW the History channel is airing a show about the great flood of Holland in 1953. The US had troops to that country within days. It just makes me sick what this do-nothing congress has allowed the asshole in the oval office to do.
BTW 2, I hope you all have taken the time to put a good emergency kit together because we no longer have a working disaster agency, and I am not joking.
Nothing to do with Katrina, but everything to do with the “war on terror” – Foreign Affairs has a must-read article about the effectiveness of the War On a Tactic.
That’s a talking point you guys should be hitting the Wingnuttosphere over the head with.
gen Russel Honore on CNN now being by Kyra “mic in da shitter” Philips
Don’t know if this has been posted yet, but there is a little stew reaching boiling point in Newtown CT regarding whether Shamocrat Lieberman should walk in the Labor Day parade alongside local Democrats. Seems Joe is not welcome to walk with the Dems. In his trademark rabid dog style, Gerstein is foaming at the mouth.
There is a lot more here than just who walks in the parade with whom. It’s about Joe betraying the wishes of CT Dems.

Kewalo– Clinton hired James Lee Witt and obviously cared about who he hired. He did not just reward his buddies and cronies.
Seems like he cared some.
Now Witt has a company– to bad FEMA isn’t on their client list.

Clinton did care. But the destruction of FEMA should be looked at as just one more example of what happens when government agencies are privatized.

Someone needs to quote the definition of fascism nice and loud to Mr.Rumsfeld.
Looks like they are trying to get out in front of charges of fascism by charging ‘fascism’.
So where are the charges they are trying to get ahead of coming from that they are trotting out this message now.
We have the WH spinning to retro-actively immunize themselves from War-Crimes charges, and Rummy redefining ‘fascism’.
Aravosis nails it:
kewalo: Thanks for the link. It’s hard to even find the words for the contempt I feel for this administration & their crony appointees. They took an agency that was remade under Witt & Clinton into an efficient response team & just trashed it. And people died that didn’t have to.

“Oh really George, and what was that?”
“Beans. That’s why you’re Putin!” [shit-eating grin]
So, this has all been reduced to “I’m rubber – you’re glue; whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you.”
No wonder our foreign policy sucks.

Isn’t Inouye on the Gang of 14?
Two possibilities:
1. He WAS;
2. (how’s THIS for a helluva buzzkill?) Gang Member Number One was voted off the island by the other 13, after Senator Clinton held her audience with another [ahem] applicant, the ring was kissed, and assurances of fealty were pledged to the appropriate lobbies, PAC’s and donors?
(Hey, don’t throw stuff! In today’s game, you’d have to be crazy not to consider ALL the possibilities!! :-)
While they are at it, will any of the MSM get Rumsfeld to explain how the Uighars released from GITMO after years of wrongful detention and Geneva conventions violations were the “worst of the worst”?
Or how it is that he was “certain” Iraq wouldn’t take more than six months?
What miles radius he had in mind when he said the WMDs are north, south, east and west of Tikrit?
Or if he believes in Santa Claus?

Heavens, what has got into Democrats in the western US?
Daily Kos has stories showing rural Democrats making once-safe Republican seats competitive in the upcoming election, such as Wyoming (Gary Trauner, who has gone door-to-door 10,000 times to introduce himself), Colorado (Jay Fawcett, who may benefit from a Lieberman-like split in the GOP), and Eastern Washington (Peter Goldmark, a rancher-biologist).
We have just a week over two months remaining to liberate this country (and start the Congressional investigations with a Democratic House of the debacle in New Orleans and everything else). I now have to check Daily Kos almost as often as FDL. The excitement is getting to be overwhelming.

We will never know the true number of dead in N.O. because BushCo quickly moved Kenyon,a wholly-owned subsidiary of Service Corporation International (SCI) to head the body recovery process.
“Based in Houston and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, SCI owns 1,500 funeral homes throughout North America, and has been a close political supporter of George W. Bush since his days as governor of Texas.
SCI has been implicated in multiple scandals—involving unlicensed embalmers, the digging up and dumping of bodies to clear space for new graves and more profits and the stuffing of bodies sent for cremation into sheds.
When the company came under investigation in Texas during Bush’s term as governor, an SCI employee threatened the lives of state regulators. Nonetheless, Bush defended its CEO, Robert Waltrip, helping to scuttle the probe.”
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2…..-s16.shtml
I am sure BushCo’s concern is that more people died in the Katrina disaster than in 9/11 – due in large part to the Bush administration’s incompetence.
