Clay at 122 — I love the Randy Newman version as well. It’s an amazing song…but there is something so achingly spot on with this Aaron Neville version with the photos.

Bobby St. Chomsky @

Did you know that the New Orleans Saints football team has already sold 60,000 season tickets for the coming season?
I guess they didn’t need still-displaced people of color to accomplish that feat.
Wonder why.

I’ll tell ya man, you just can’t mess with cultural priorities. Plain and simple. Excuse me while I run to the store for a little milk. Sound of deisel motor warming the powertrain up. Putt, putt, putt, spew, spew, choke!!!!!

Thanks for remembering Gulfport/Biloxi.

I lived in Biloxi, once upon a time, and I was devastated when I saw the damage there last year. A church I had gone to for a Scottish heritage meeting (for a friend, not me!), that had stood for over 100 years was gone.

My courtship and eventual marriage to Mr. LJ#2 happened in Biloxi. Katrina wipd out every physical proof of every single memory from that time: Restaurants where we held hands, the special place where he proposed to me, the store where I bought my wedding dress, the quiet little apartment we shared just after our marriage, the mansions we used to drive past and dream of living in one day–they’re all gone. I’m not married to him anymore, but that didn’t mean I had forgotten all that had once been.

I just sat there and cried last year when I saw the pictures that first time.

Katrina was worse than Camille. With Camille, a lot of the historic homes along the waterfront had remained standing. People who lived inland didn’t have their homes flood out. That didn’t happen with Katrina. People who had seen only water in their street with Camille were treading water in an attic with Katrina.

And the response of the government was shameful. An elderly couple living on $20K a year were told they were too rich to qualify for FEMA. People living in the projects of one MS town were told late on a Friday afternoon to leave the projects–by Sunday at 5 pm. And so many more stories of callous disregard for the most desperate of the victims.

This President’s administration has broken my heart. What happened following the break in the levies in New Orleans is beyond shameful. A year later, and I can still recall the horror of individual faces broadcast from Convention Center. I still wonder what happened to some of the pregnant girls. So young, so frightened for their unborn children. Those unborn babies have been deprived of their birthright, they have been deprived of their culture and support and friends. It drives me nuts that when finally the evacuation started it seemed like such a good thing. But under this administration even that turned into something shameful. They took those people far and wide…….they don’t plan to rebuild in any serious way to allow these citizens an opportunity to come home. It is my fervent hope that anyone who goes to LA to make money off this tragedy is haunted by the ghosts of the dead and displaced. The places should be secured for those turned out by the flood. It was the failure of the levies, the government is responsible. The government should pick up the tab.

From last year:

Will History Repeat Itself?
A flooded New Orleans 78 years ago helped pave the way for the New Deal. Could it happen again?
