I’ve written before about how Republicans just aren’t funny — it isn’t in their nature. Maybe it is due to the fact that those who swoon at the sight of authority just have no ability to prick the self-importance of the powerful in a way that generates humor, or that their tendency to laugh at the misfortunes of the weak (as in ethnic or sexist jokes) generally aren’t funny to anyone over the age of five. But once again, those laugh riots at the Lieberman campaign are proving that they are, at heart, Republicans.
The Kiss Float was funny, delightful, light hearted and acute in its targeting of a particular, telling moment that exploded so many of the self-important myths generated by Joe and his Party of Ego. And in response? We get some LieberClown dressed up as Osama Bin Laden saying "Support Ned Lamont — We Do."
That’s great. Why not just build a campaign around three Poles and a lightbulb, a priest, a rabbi and a minister or "for a nickle I would"?
It’s an old GOP card that has been played before, and will no doubt be played again. When this whole dark era of wingnut domination is over, maybe they can just return to bitching about black UN helicopters and fluoridated water. Honestly, their ham-fisted attempts to be funny are just abjectly painful to witness.
Now, I can’t say for sure if Lieberman is paying this guy to make this sick and truly despicable joke. But in my experience, a) nearly all the people who show up on behalf of Lieberman not named Lieberman are collecting a paycheck for it, and b) the guy looks suspiciously like the guy who showed up dressed in a banana suit and tried to muscle his way into the frame with Ned Lamont during the "Wake Up WalMart" press conference (where the paid LieberYouth were first instructed to begin harassing Ned, right as Richard Goodstein appeared on the scene). (hat tip LamontBlog)
Because Joe is all about eschewing negative, partisan politics and taking the high road, don’t you know. What a truly great man. How tragic that we blog urchins don’t recognize that and refuse to kiss his ring.

Ned! Frist!
Pammy Atlas’s vlog is friggin hilarious..wait, it was supposed to be serious. Does that count?
back in the good ole days, they’d dress somebody up like Joe Stalin to endorse pinko Democrats !
The guy doesn’t look like OBL at all.
To me, it looks as if he’s dressed up as the typical “Arab” and that’s supposed to equal “terrorist” if you’re thinking with half your brain.
I’d say the Lieberman campaign is continuing its basic appeal to racism with this one.
I got a broken URL for that banana suit link, just fyi…
and how can you tell that’s osama, and not just some bedraggled guy?
It’s the Repub pundit loudmouths and bullies that aren’t funny. Others are bitingly so. It’s tied in with the very reason they become pundits and bullies – they’re broken, shame-filled, leg-shakingly afraid people. That doesn’t engender funniness, y’know?
and when I first started reading, I thought of Bruno Kirby in Godd Morning, Vietnam: “Sir…in my heart, I know I’m funny.”
that guy is supposed to be Osama bin Laden?!?
prolly be more effective if it were a slighty better costume…
I wanted to let you know there is a follow-up commentary just out regarding Lieberman and the VFF/GOP……..isn’t discovery just fun? Think you will find it interesting……

frankly, I thought the dude was looking like a “hippie” supporting Ned — hippie-fear is fierce amongst elderly Republicans …
I thought the guy in the banana suit was George Allen? Now I’m really confused.
Didn’t look like Osama to me, either.
A disgusting analogy to make, anyway.
I didn’t know ZZ Top supported Lamont. :)
filthy racist xenophobes with no imagination at all and whose only game is endorsing more fear and hate.
macaca, little guatamalan, now arabs.
nice.
Hey, Mr. Linkee Man, linkee me banana!
I didn’t think of Osama–I thought the guy was supposed to be a hippie. Those wacky republicans!
I had no idea it was OBL either. Here are my ‘notes’ to the Republicans on their ‘Ned Lamont Supporter’ Joke.
1) Get a better OBL costume; and
2) Don’t use OBL until you capture him cause right now it’s just a reminder that your party failed to do what it set out to do and started a war we can’t get out of with a country that had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 9/11 ATTACKS and is now just sucking lives and $$$ by the hour.
Other than that – I love it.
So who wants to commission a Summer’s Eve Box that says “Support Lieberman, we do!”

This is really sad. I saw the photo and thought “Cool. Ned has the support of Connecticut rastifarians.”
I wish I were kidding. Will try to get out more.
Blog urchins? is that anything like sea urchins?
At least someone has spines—even multiple ones. That’s us.

Rove’s guys need to get a better costumer provider.
There are going to be all sorts of disgusting, ugly things going down in Connecticut this fall because the GOP sees this as a Republican pick up state (i.e. Liberman). Personally, I think, if anything, it’s going to help Lamont. As a resident of CT on and off for 40 years, I don’t think any CT Dem (or Independent, or moderate Republican) is going to appreciate having swiftboaters and Rove henchmen in CT throwing mud and filth.
Perhaps the $60 a day included the money for props and costumes.
besides, have you ever seen a plump or sunglass sporting Osama on teevee?
me neither.
Florida Mom @ 20 should have a spew warning!
When dirty tricks go bad…
actually, it’s an Allen Ginsburg look-alike
Wingnuts aren’t funny. And we need to hold them accountable. ThinkProgress has a good article on that tool Stephen Hayes being picked to write Cheney’s autobiography. Rush Limbaugh, The National Review, Drudge, Instapundit, and their enablers on cable TV need to be held accountable for this mess.
We need a data mining project, so every time any one of these idiots speaks, their stupid and hilariously wrong past statements get thrown back at them.
it’s probably not the same banana that is showing up with a monkey at Sen. Allen’s events.

Interesting. Just got off the phone with my business partner in New York and asked him what he thought about Lieberman…
He said. “You know, I don’t even know anything about Lamont but I can’t stand Lieberman. It’s not even about the war in Iraq. It’s because he’s whiner!!! And I’m Jewish!” LOL
My business partner isn’t as politically savvy or as informed as I am but I thought his whiner observation was interesting and wonder how prevalent that is to the casual observer (and voter).
I thought that guy was a musician I know (he’s Jewish with dreadlocks) and did a double-take. “Hey, what’s MJ doing in Connecticut?” :)
I Emailed Cilizza a link to the previous post and got back an Email from his Blackberry saying he cant open it so I cutted and pasted the entire Jane-post and just Emailed it to him …
God, it looks like Jamie Farr in Cannonball Run.

Well, for starters, the Rovians were using the “OBL supports” crap back in 2004. I was with Emily’s List in West Palm Beach on election day and “OBL endorses Kerry” signs were up everywhere.
Sad
This Osama guy should be invited on the Colbert report! Wouldn’t that be entertaining.
Bad costume choice.
At first glance I thought an Amish Union had endorsed Ned.
Then I wondered why Captain Ahab was supporting him.

I saw one of those infuriating “nine out of 10 terrorists prefer Kerry” bumper stickers on a car at my daughter’s dance studio. I had a suspicion who it was, but wasn’t sure.
I put a post-it on their windshield, saying “If I were you, I wouldn’t put LIES on my bumper.”
The bumper sticker was gone next time I saw the car…was I going over the line? Maybe. But what I wrote was true, every word of it.
Oh, and jane–these vile things aren’t meant to be funny. They are meant to be “plausibly deniable”, as in when you rightfully point out how hateful and disgusting they are, the Rethugs will say, “you humorless liberals never could take a joke.”
Just another reason to wish these disgusting people the most humiliating defeat that could ever happen.
“but I thought his whiner observation was interesting and wonder how prevalent that is to the casual observer (and voter).”
Coz, that’s the very first thing most non-political people notice about him, and cringe about. It’s unfortunate, for the most part, that people form opinions based on stuff like that, but in this case it is indicative of his larger problem – he’s a wanking whiner!
I was shocked to hear Heidi Klum’s voice the other day. She sounds like she’s on helium but it doesn’t take away from her smarts or beauty.

Actually, Zogby interactive is not a typical online poll. Zogby has been fine tuning it’s methodology for years and it’s results are now on a par with the Zogby telephone survey- it’s reliable and should be taken seriously. It uses stratified sample technology.

I’ve never seen OBL with shades, but I understand he has a beautiful bong he carries around with him.
This month’s Atlantic (or is it Harpers?) has a piece by a woman who apparently captured his attention. During their first “date”, he took several hits off his bong; she declined. I dunno,
I’m getting such a different picture of him from non-official readings. He seems like a spoiled rich kid, just like Georgie and about as serious in his religion as Georgie is. Does George go to church? I didn’t think so.

Gas continues to fall. This is good news for Republicans as it decreases pump rage. Ernesto turned toward Florida and away from the energy intensive Louisiana-Texas coast. As a result, oil prices which were set to jump either way on Friday fell and are again testing the $70 level.

I receive Zogby interactive surveys frequently. I rarely have the time to take them. Clearly it’s self selecting – on top of being only available to people with Internet access.
Secondly – living in CT – I would be shocked if a week after the primary, Lieberman didn’t have higher name recognition than Lamont among Indeps and Repubs.
If I were an 18 year incumbent – I would want much more than a 10 points margin. It seems to me he had a much larger margin in the primary and it melted away pretty quickly.
And just curious – he’s “up” 10 points compared to what? Did Zogby recently do an interactive survey of all likely voters in CT to compare these results to? Just curious.
I’d also like to see a breakdown of the votes – do you have that info? I would be surprised if Lieberman’s support doesn’t skew Republican.

In the “Payback: What a Concept!” and “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry ‘n’ Chuck” departments (via Atrios): the DSCC page has zapped Joe out of existence, and shows Lamont as the “incumbent” in Connecticut instead.
Kos says Liddy Dole has drafted Republican workers all across the eastern US to campaign for Chaffey. Minus the editorial and punditocracy noise, maybe the incumbency protection racket seems to be truly bipartisan.
I also hear it’s an open primary. This is where maple sappy New England Dems separate from wild eyed Texas Republicans (it’s all that hot sauce burning our sphincters that makes us so ornery – and I’ll bet Jane finds red hot chili pepper seeds on her TP quite often too). In Texas the Republicans regularly vote in Democratic primaries to make sure the weakest Dem candidate goes to the general election.
Where is the Dem GOTV effort for Mr Laffey?
Is anyone on here from RI? What gives? Please don’t claim to be above that sort of thing. It’s legal, so it’s dumb not to. And with the R’s running smears against Laffey, wouldn’t it be delish to see them turn 180 degrees?

Rep. Harris: Church-state separation ‘a lie’
POSTED: 5:37 p.m. EDT, August 28, 2006
MIAMI, Florida (AP) — U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is “a lie” and God and the nation’s founding fathers did not intend the country be “a nation of secular laws.”
…..
“If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin,” Harris said.
But they can be downright amusing…

I might agree except these guys are so incompetent they couldn’t manipulate themselves out of a wet paper bag. In fact, it usually works the other way.
Bush saber rattles with Iran. Prices shoot up and axis of evil Iran’s treasury gets richer and Americans end up paying more for gas and being pissed off about it.
Bush lets Israel rampage in Lebanon for a month. Fears of a wider war increase and push up oil prices. We lose credibility along with the Israelis while Iran’s revenues go up allowing them more easily to finance reconstruction in Lebanon.

Did you ever notice that when lefties make protest signs and placards, they look very homemade and grassroots; right-winger signs always look as if they were mass-produced and mass-purchased using “organizational” (read: top-down rather than grassroots) money? Another example of this is Fred Phelps’s group’s signs. Frankly, the font/layout of the sign gives you a heads-up whether you should even bother to read it.

I’m kinda like one of the leg breakers who advanced the union cause in America
I’m not afraid to fight back
this asshole would be in the hospital, thinking about filing a law suit, not standing on a corner slandering Ned, if I had my way (and I lived within driving distance of CT)
and that would be a very effective change of topic
I’m willing to allow this asshole to make his case to a jury
we’re not going to win by playing the victim here
Show me the right wing equivilent of the Daily Show or Colbert. The only right wing funny I can think of is Dennis Miller, who is pretty funny. Think of all the people who think Stephen Colbert is secretly right wing. Could anything be more ironic?

Okay FirePups, heads up on the story about Joe-Repug ties that I thought we get released a week ago. It’s at ePluribus Media:
Sealed with a KISS
You got more links and dirt, bring it on. Joe IS a Republican candidate; he may not have ID’d himself as one, but he’s getting their financial and technical support.
I suspect the only reason that Joe has not received website support is that THEY know we are watching.
I’ll make a detour to Corbin’s Corner shopping center tomorrow (I was at work today) with my camera. Maybe he’ll be there again?

Hi freepatriot,
I feel that we are not so far apart but want to clarify some stuff about fdl.
You say——-
“I ain’t a nice person…I’m polite and respectful when those traits are called for, but I’m still willing to punch somebody in the head when somebody needs it…violence doesn’t solve the problem, but it can sure change the topic real quick…I take my patriotism very seriously, and you question my patriotism at your own peril…it’s all about mind over matter. If I don’t mind, it don’t matter…I’m very familiar with the phrase ‘one of us is going to the hospital, and one of us is going to jail. I’ve been both places and I don’t care where I end up’…you’d be surprised how well that attitude works for solving disputes…”
freepatriot—-Honoring your fighting spirit. WE NEED YOU. Asking you to honor the contributions of people at fdl who are not out there w us sword in hand. They also serve who provide encouragement, inspiration, questioning about our goals, and support in general.
You and I are out there with our weapons.* But let’s acknowledge those who serve behind us in love and support and asking questions and clarifying our goals and encouragement. We need them.
*ref—-www.russmed.com at great cost to the management. I am willing to die to serve others. I sense you are as well. But let’s not destroy our supply lines. Thank you for considering my ideas. See you on the front lines.
Favor requested, FirePups. Story needs a boost to get eyeballs. Could you please go to DailyKos and recommend the same story so that it has a chance of making the Recommended List?
DKos: Sealed with a KISS
Thanks much. We have the footprints and fingerprints. Now we just need the smoking gun.

Ever since then he has been as painful as no-novacaine dental work.

I look at that and I think, Sweet Gallopin’ Jeebus! Osama can stand on a street corner WAVING at passersby, and Bushco STILL can’t catch him.

orthodox muslims do not use opiates, tobacco is even frowned upon. he is supposed to be a deeply religious and ascetic man– I doubt he smokes drugs and it sounds like the woman who called it a bong was a wee bit clueless anyway.

Show me ONE comment by oldtree that isn’t a troll about Lamont and the Halliburton issue, and I’ll take back my words.
However I take seriously these attempts by the Lieberman and Republican campaigns to storm into a community and fling poo around to disrupt the opposition. I personally have no time whatsoever for “kindness” to trolls. I don’t have much use for “internet nannies” either, trying to censor other posters. The moderators are of course free to edit user comments however they like.
Maybe someone should call the FBI and report that they saw Osama…isn’t there a terror hotline? I’m serious.
my 160– that is not to say that he isn’t a deeply disturbed and angry and warring religious and ascetic man.
The dude in photo is definitely not funny. And how is everybody today?
The Nefarious Leslie @ 151
I’m totally a lurker now. If there’s any blog to lurk at, this is the one. Best. Comments. Evar.
that Osama/bong story is sooo fishy! OBL is and has always been a horrendously overly-religious Muslim — for him to be in a situation with an unmarried female to be sharing a ‘bong’ is sooo unlikely or else OBL is a total hypocrit … some chick is trying to peddle a book it sounds like …
GSD @ 156
Yeah, but I wanted to throw em a bone. What else have they got? Jackie Mason is classic funny and a flaming loony. Umm … I think that’s it.
I like funny, combined with political bite. Sorta like Lamont poking fun at himself, while laying down a couple of sincere challenges. Good stuff.

also cool out on the physical violence shit — that’s often a sign of an agent provocateur — just like starting flamewars is online. Comprende, amigo?
freepatriot,
I’ve watched you for some time here at fdl. You remind me of the guy in the bar who’s really pissed at life and wants to start something with someone – anyone, it doesn’t matter who.
You flail around and hit the mark sometimes, but we aren’t who you want to get it on with. I do appreciate your pugnacious spirit, truly I do, but you are also unconscious and therefore insulting in your offhand comments. You often don’t know who you are talking to or about. Tone it down. Are you lke this everywhere?
OBL smoking pot is interesting to me because that’s not who we are told he is. Maybe the other things about him aren’t true, either. I doubt I’m exagerrating when I say that everyone here is aware that pot isn’t likely to lead to violence. Since you aren’t aware of that, I’m likely to think you spend your time with people who do thing so.
Please, be more civil.
That guy won’t think the Osama costume is so funny if DHS snatches him up and throws him in the cell next to Jose Padilla for a couple of years without charging him with anything. “But it’s a costuuume! Please! Let me out!!! They won’t give me back my deposit at the costume shop! Please! Let me ou-u-ut! It was only a joke!”

Might be time for some good old OT. Federal District Judge Robert W. Pratt has come out with a ruling which throws Chuck Colson’s prison ministry out of Iowa prisons. A gem from his 140-page ruling:
“The religion classes are not objective inquiries into the religious life, comparable to an adult study or college course, offered for the sake of discussing and learning universal secular, civic values or truths,” Pratt wrote. “They are, instead, overwhelmingly devotional in nature and intended to indoctrinate InnerChange inmates into the Evangelical Christian belief system.”
Later in the ruling, Pratt observed, “For all practical purposes, the state has literally established an Evangelical Christian congregation within the walls of one of its penal institutions, giving the leaders of that congregation, i.e., InnerChange employees, authority to control the spiritual, emotional, and physical lives of hundreds of Iowa inmates. There are no adequate safeguards present, nor could there be, to ensure that state funds are not being directly spent to indoctrinate Iowa inmates.

All of these speculations about OBL (including my own) means that OBL has entered the realm of cultural myth. In that sense it is fundamentally irrelevant whether he is still alive or whether he is a head. In fact, I just read a post that he has been removed from the FBI’s 10 most wanted list.
What to make of it all? The best I can come up with is that he is now a myth. Is the threat over then? Not on your life. His entering the realm of myth and sainthood makes him all the more dangerous. For all we know it is deliberate, either on the part of OBL himself or the FBI, or both acting independently. Oh yes, reality is that bizarre, even more bizarre than you can imagine.
Ed*ard Teller @ 176
Wowser. How many states is Colson operating in, anyway? I’ve not heard much about him in recent years.
OJS,

I saw OBL at the local Road Pilot, he was hitchhiking his way to Graceland.
“censor” means something quite specific to me. It means eliminating words spoken or chilling free discourse by preventing things from being spoken or printed.
What I see here, Kurt, is a conversation. A person says something and others respond. Sometimes the statement or the response is heated. Sometimes a response is something like, “I find that offensive.” That is not censoring, that is the statement of a truth to them and no amount of screaming or scolding will change that feeling. Indeed, put downs and telling people to calm down or that they have no reason to be offended is, in some discourse, called, “silencing.” Now, as a white guy of some years, I have rarely experienced that, but I take seriously people who say they have and or are.
So, this conversation starts and maybe the person who said the original thing says, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.” Or maybe they say nothing. And then the conversation continues with more information about the relationship between those two people. Generally, it is about choices — Not censoring, not by “nannies” (by which I guess you mean a derogatory name for a woman or a genderized insult to a man). Just conversation and decisions and choices by people who, in the most part, respect each other.

My mother said she saw him in Chinatown… but you can’t always trust your mother.
So that’s where Osama bin Laden has been hiding out: doing gigs for the Joe Lieberman campaign, which looks more and more each day like a Republican smear campaign.
Has Homeland Security been notified yet? Has Osama bin Laden been arrested yet? What? That’s just a guy dressed up to look like Osama bin Laden? Could of fooled me. We shouldn’t take any chances. He should be carted off to some secret prison in Eastern Europe to be interrogated…just in case. Or maybe picked up and held at one of the secret “detention centers” Halliburton is building for $385 million around the United States…and probably run by some “private” company like Blackwater or Custer Battles.
Hey, why disappear (rendition) people halfway around the world, when a secret “detention center” system could be built right under everyone’s noses here in the United States? Who would find out? Especially if they were “black ops” funded and Congress didn’t conduct any oversight? Who would ever know?

The fascists are now at the point that they want to incite political violence and street combat in order to frighten, confuse and demoralize common folks. We will NOT respond!!! Union activists did NOT attack goons and stooges preemptively, union folks were too busy protecting each other and RESPONDING to company thugs and mercenaries.
The fascists are a minority and know it…that’s why they will try, out of increasing desperation, to create violence to attract attention and discredit the good guys.

Actually… I find that photo hilarious. I know the Republican was trying to look like a swarthy Arab but instead he looks like Abe Lincoln in a night cap. In other words, it looks like Abe Lincoln got out of bed to endorse Ned Lamont.
I’m sorry but I must beg to differ on this notion that conservatives can’t be funny. Even some liberals have found that my site can be funny, sometimes intentionally so.
jane –
a friend and i were discussing this the other day after i received a viral email ‘joke’ where hillary clinton survives a plane crash and the punch line is a picture of a broom. he said it’s impossible to be funny when you’re oblivious to the obvious. i mean, you could see the broom from the first line of the joke. looking at iraq, afghanistan, now iran … it’s painfully clear that the right just can’t see what is glaringly obvious to the rest of the world.
ummmm, break @277,
I would like to see some links or examples of off-color remarks by Clinton, or any Liberal.
You see, Just by their very nature, Republicans are racists! WHAT was it that first got them fired up against Democrats and swarming to Republicans? Why is was Ronald Reagan’s Framing Black Welfare women driving to get their checks in their Cadillacs! Tell me that is not why you are a Republican—greedily thinking of only your own wallet and not giving to anyone in need. Instead, throw out that old worn out “personal responsibility’ phrase as your defense!
And isn’t it so sad, that the Republican’s destruction of our country have turned so many people against the flag or anything that points to our Government ! I shall take great pride again in hanging out our flag, when the Democrats take back this country and give us something to be proud about.
OK – HERE’S A SOLUTION FOR “THE LIEBERMAN SUPPORTER IN OSAMA COSTUME” PROBLEM
The thing is, that guy doesn’t look even remotely like Osama, he looks more like a shepherd in a school play. So here’s what could be done to take advantage of this – it’s simple, it’s fast, and EASY!
Make a couple of picket signs that say “Moses For Lamont”. Have two Lamont volunteers hover around the robed guy with their “Moses For Lamont” signs All of a sudden, Osama-man becomes an apostle.
Deadheads for Ned? Groovy!
…and as for this dude’s other costume, are we sure that was a banana or was he just happy to see Lamont?
Bergs… 281
Come on Bergs… are you that naive that you don’t see that both liberals and conservatives at times make off-color remarks or jokes? It’s just that some liberals faint with outrage when they hear conservatives do it showing the clear double standard.
Pretty week calling me a racist because I’m a Republican when you don’t even know me. Do you think that all those folks in the “red” states are rich? There have been studies that on a per-capita basis, some of the poorest states give more to charity then the liberal bastions of New York and California. YOU DONT MEASURE COMPASION ONLY BY HOW MUCH YOU PAY IN TAXES!!!
I don’t need some elitist telling me I’m greedy when I give plenty to my Synagogue, my community and upwards of 40% of my income to taxes. I hope if you have children or plan to have children that you teach them that personal responsibility is very important. I know I tell that to my 16 year old son all the time. Please open up your mind.
Your comments prove you have no idea what makes this country great.
BTW… Here are a few liberal comments in case you want to google them:
Dick Durbin at an event in Illinois telling a joke about Why Abraham Lincoln should be considered Jewish.
Because his name is Abe and he was shot in the temple.
Hillary Clinton joking that “Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis”.
Senator Joe Biden commenting that “You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.”. And then stating recently that he is an attractive candidate in the south because his state of Delaware was a Slave State.
Senator Robert Byrd using the term “white niggers”
Liberals in Hollywood??? to many comments to list (see Whoopi Goldberg)
