This video was put together by a supporter of Coleen Rowley, using the Had Enough? song that our own Tommy Yum co-wrote (with fellow SNZ alum and all-around sweetie Ken Mosher) and played on, with the lovely Rickie Lee Jones doing lead vocals. Some days, you just walk around with a grin from ear to ear.
If I haven’t said this lately, I need to do so now: Howie Klein is a genius. And he needs your help:
A John Laesch supporter is doing another one as we speak. A Jerry McNerney supporter who works as a dj is doing a re-mix with soundbytes from Dirty Dick Pombo. We love all that stuff. And Blue America has a plan for a next step too. And that’s why we started the PAC. The PAC allows us to raise and spend as much money as we can, not for candidates per se but to get our 30-second spots on the radio. Unlike the full song, the 30-second spots don’t say "It’s time to throw the rascals out." They are geared towards each specific district and each mentions the local rascal that it’s time to throw out, be it Kline in Minnesota, Brown-Waite in Florida, Doolittle in California, Kuhl in New York or Mean Jean Schmidt in Ohio.
The PAC wasn’t easy to set up. My bank manager resisted for weeks, actually telling me that the bank didn’t want anything to do with– he said couldn’t have anything to do with– embarrassing President Bush! And there’s so much paperwork! But now it’s set up and ready to collect and disburse contributions. Do you want to help? Well, the obvious way is to send some dough, either at that link or by check to Blue America, P.O. Box 27201, Los Angeles, CA 90027. But there’s something else we need from you.
Because we’re an official PAC now, the FEC doesn’t allow us to coordinate anything with any of the campaigns. If you live in one of the districts for one of our candidates, we need volunteers who will help us figure out which local radio stations will be most effective. Suggestions and ideas for a grassroots endeavor like this are not just welcome; they are crucial. Meanwhile, send your friends and family and colleagues to our MySpace page to listen to the song and download it and read more about it.
Any help — from a small donation to an offer to help get the song on the air of a local radio station to e-mailing the song around to all your friends — would be much appreciated. And a little brainstorming in the comments on things we can do would be great — every little bit helps.
Have you had enough? It’s time to do your part to help us throw the rascals out!

Barry Manilow?
Best lines from the Emmy’s last night was Jon Stewart and Colbert. After SC steps all over JS, Jon comes back at him:
JS: Is this about the Barry Manilow thing?
SC: I can’t believe I lost to Barry Manilow!
I tried to get back to the link at Crooks and Liars where at one time you could download the song, however the page isn’t there.
Is the song somewhere else? I can forward it to someone I know at a public radio station.

Good grief! Where is Howie banking? If I had a bank manager say something like this to me, I’d be walking to the next bank down the street. If the bank wants to make its money only on Republican accounts, that’s its prerogative, and I’ll take my business elsewhere to help them achieve their objective.
I have a NYS media list that includes radio stations that cover politcs. Would that help?
Are you hoping for a story, or do you mean to do a media buy?
I don’t know how to email a song. As you are all painfully aware, I lack technical skills, but I do have some nice politcal email lists. Have you talked to DFA or Move on about emailing it to their lists? I can talk to DFA for you if you like.
Pardon the OT, but I’ve been working and just catching up. Wanted to make sure you all saw my thanks for the happy birthday wishes…at my age (53) you always think birthdays shouldn’t be that big a deal, but then you find yourself thrilled when people make a fuss…have sent my secretary out for a bigger ice-cream cake thanks to you all!
LHP at 11 — I’m sure Howie would love the info on the NYS stations. :)
Really loved this ad – the ONLY thing I found distracting was reading the words to the song when I should have been paying attention to the negatives about Rowley’s opponent.
It’s a great song, and it gives me hope that we are changing things.
Happy Birthday Anne!
and let’s all make sure Howie’s Pac gets lots of contributions so this great song plays everywhere! I’m forwarding links to everyone I know and send the Pac some love on Saturday.
Good stuff! good stuff!

Still on the bank thing . . .
I’ve dealt with bankers for various projects – personal and corporate – and a banker is a great person to brainstorm with. I can’t imagine that Howie’s banker is being helpful with much more than the paperwork, and there have got to be other bankers around that would not just process things for him/us, but who would actively help him/us to make this PAC function at its best.
This isn’t a call for PC investing, but the reaction of an ordinary consumer to what seems to be wingnut PC business practices on the part of his bank. I don’t think that Howie’s going to get the best assistance and advice from someone who’s admitted he doesn’t really want to do things like this.
I’m not registered with blogspot, so can’t comment at his place, but I hope he sees this discussion and looks around for some better financial advisors.
I’m usually good at sussing out acronyms on google, but SNZ has me beat.
Just a guess, but Swimming New Zealand is not it, yes?

I’ve long felt that the rethugs have owned the Dems when it came to ads. Not no more…this was friggin’ great! I will be contributing mightily after I flee wage-slave work place this evening. More! More! More!
And, yes…I think that “time to throw the rascals out” is a perfect catch phrase for Nov. 2006. It says it all…and seems to be a phrase that sinks deep into political history, to boot.
Great band name.
John Casper,

Well, SNZ broke up, but Maxwell & Mosher are still making music rogether.
I have two cool albums, post SNZ.
I know that more and more folks are getting high speed internet access, but this has got to get out where dialup (and non-wired) folks can see it and hear it. Here are two thoughts:
Play it at campaign events – imagine a CT version as the soundtrack accompanying the KISS float.
If you’re at a place with a campaign booth (state fairs and such), find a way to have a computer running it in a loop for the folks who walk by. It’ll catch people’s attention, and then follow up with volunteers standing around to engage the conversation.
I have a technical comment, based on a bit of professional experience, as I’ve done some sound editing. I first listened to this (over the internet, over cheap headphones) without looking at the “subtitles” to see if I could catch every word. I got most, but not every one. A second listening filled in most of the blanks. Still, it required a bit of concentration. Bear in mind, many people listen to their radios in the car, w/ a lot of background noise happening, or in the house w/background chatter.
If you listen to any radio or TV ad, or Broadway musical for that matter, or movie with music going on in the background, the words are almost always crystal clear. The music is kept a little on the low side, the lyrics a little on the high side, so that there’s no work involved in catching the content.
If this is going out on the radio, and if the mix hasn’t been nailed down, I’d recommend one more pass for all those radios out there playing under less than audiophile-optimal conditions.
Yow! Thanks for the link, Pach. SNZ is terrific!
CHS- I just sent you an e-mail with a suggestion from millineryman AT mac dot com.

I’ll join you in your embarrassment, but that just makes my thoughts about Howie’s choice of bankers and percy’s comments @ 8:48 about the production values even stranger.
(And percy, I agree: words must be crystal clear, or radio stations will reject it – even if they want to play it. If they’re on the fence about playing it, you don’t want to give them a reason to say no.)

A very valid comment. Kenny and I spent a long time mixing the track.
Don’t want to bore people with shop talk, but it isn’t a question of the balance mix, percy. Rickie’s vocals are louder than any vocal we’ve ever mixed, and we believe pop vocals should be up front in a big way.
Her phrasing is as idiosyncratic as it is wonderful, and there’s a lot of words to fit in there. Simply making her louder, or adding more compression or limiting isn’t going to fix it.

Great! One more thing to check is that some fairs have rules about speakers and sound levels. Some don’t allow anything amplified, others set a sound level, and still others don’t care as long as the folks in the booth next door don’t complain about the noise.
Assuming the last one is your case, I’d suggest buying some cobbler and sweet potato pie first thing in the morning, and making frequent complements about them throughout the day . . . keeping the neighbors happy is always a good strategy!
It is a good ad – except for one part of the video that is just very poor imagery: The “Agent of Change” poster is a we bit too workers’ paradise in its esthetic sensibilities (even given the Wimbledon color scheme, which came out of where?). Why not go with tried and true Red, White & Blue, and friendlier, less threatening, imagery for the agent of change?

The Blue America PAC was formed on August 24 to raise money to put “Have You Had Enough” on the radio in the form of 30 second advertising spots for various Blue America candidates. As you can see from our list, most of our candidates are in low-cost media markets where just a few dollars will go a very long way. We have no candidates in expensive media markets like NYC or Boston or Los Angeles or Chicago. These are “dollah a hollah” markets. We’re hoping to have people humming their way into the polling booths come November. The story of the song is here and please watch Firedoglake, Crooks and Liars, Music For America and Down With Tyranny for updates—and for the videos.”

and he took my follow up to your question, too TSF.
I love this. Colleen Rowley’s spot is funny and effective (my fave is the shot of the Change Agent), and a 30-second one would be better.
But one of my frustrations is that we have a great candidate in IA-4 who has a decent chance to win if he could get some buzz in the MSM. He isn’t on the ActBlue list, or any of the other lists. He is almost surely not the only progressive Democrat who is being lost in the shuffle of picking candidates.
I think that candidates from largely rural Midwest districts like this one are less likely to have a big contingent of on-line supporters than someone who lives near San Francisco or Boston. That makes it less lkely that they will end up on a blog preferred list, and be able to raise money that way. But radio is available everywhere.
Could we have a spot that individual candidates could drop the appropriate photos and other info into, without having the work done by the Blue America PAC folks? Or is it possible to create a template on line and have individual campaigns do the legwork on supplying whatever is needed?

Dunno if this has been shared yet, and I can’t hang around, but wouldn’t this Huff Po post by the so very concerned Stephen Elliott (about “news” that happened quite some time ago) have been an ideal vehicle for him to admit that he just might have been a tad naive in proclaiming that Loserman (R-Narcisism) was not campaigning with Rs?

Corps keeping the lid on dike data
By Robert P. King
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 28, 2006
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/s….._0827.html
The Army Corps of Engineers is refusing to release detailed historical information about leaks in the Herbert Hoover Dike, saying the data could prove useful to terrorists or saboteurs.
But one South Florida congressman and a state-hired dike expert disagree, saying the data could help inform residents about the dangers they face from the leak-prone berm around Lake Okeechobee. They say the information also could shed light on whether the corps is focusing its repair efforts on the sections of dike most in need.

In regards to ActBlue: I know there are problems with setting up local candidate pages depending on STATE financial reporting and election regs; we are having that problem with candidates in Michigan. Only federal candidates in MI currently have ActBlue pages. ActBlue needs 10K in donations for the purposes of addressing MI regs alone; don’t know that this isn’t the same problem IA candidates might have.
Seems like a federal-state PAC for each state might be the way to handle this (each having its own ActBlue page and redirecting $ to local candidates), but I don’t know enough about it, only an off-the-cuff guess.

Rayne, Selden Spencer is running for Congress, so the state rules aren’t an issue. My recollection is that Howie said 11 states have candidate pages, when he was here with Ben Rahn the other day.
My idea is that we are running out of time to get one candidate a week on FDL for a chat, or for special attention elsewhere. It might be helpful to do some things that any candidate could use, even with young inexperienced people running their campaigns.

Yes?
doncha think with all the race baiting the repugs are doing, as some point, Condi might get fed up?
I wouldn’t bet on it… but you’d think it would penetrate at some point..

Yes. We hope they do!!

Yes. As a PAC, this connection and coordination with candidates has to be outsourced, as it were, to anyone interested in making those connections. Have at it!

Susan, Blue America is only a part of the wider ActBlue fundraising network. If you search ActBlue for federal candidates in Iowa, Seldon’s name comes right up. In fact, Seldon’s own website links to ActBlue for its online fundraising!
And looking at the sitemeter info about who’s looking at FDL right now separated by time zones . . . based on their most recent slice in time data, more folks have logged into FDL from the Central time zone than from the Pacific time zone. This isn’t just a coastal blog that flies over the rest of the country! ;)
New thread, gang. :)

I get the impression that Peter King is mean, a drunk, and unabashedly supported the IRA, which I believe was a designated terrorist organization.
How can this man possibly win reelection?
Oh, he’s ugly, too.

Peterr, I got Selden hooked up with ActBlue when I heard he was running and couldn’t find a link to contribute. But having your name pop up in a search isn’t the same as being on the Blue America page or lists like the Progressive Patriots Fund and Boxer’s PAC for a Change. In Iowa, the people who are on those lists are the same people on the DCCC lists: Braley and Boswell. Being adopted by progressive blogs and PACs translates to fundraising, which attracts buzz, which attracts fundraising. My fear is that we (Democrats) will leave possible wins on the table this year by concentrating on a few races.
Can’t read through all the comments, so maybe someone already said this, but … where’s HER name in this ad? Seems like it’d be a good idea.
All I remember from the ad is the name of the guy you’re not supposed to vote for. And the song, of course… Love the song.
It’d be a great ad if it mentioned Rowley.
Oh. Never mind my previous comment.
Sorry. Didn’t read all the way through as to reasons why etc etc.
Bygones!
Susan,
I edited this video to this wonderful music Howie Klein made available to me. I made it so I could do just as you described. If you have photos and appropriate text, send it to me and I’ll bang out a version. If you’d rather have a volunteer there editi it, I can send you the video files. I’m not with Act Blue or any other PAC, candidate or campaign. I’m just a guy who is trying to change the world as much as I can with the skills I have. Contact me at mmcintee@mac.com
