Stopped by to see if I had missed anything from the Sabbath gasbag circuit. Apparently not.

Bob Shieffer? of CBS noted the irony of the Bush administration still not getting much aid to homeowners in New Orleans, but Hezbollah? seems to be able to get $12,000 US dollars into the hands of Lebanonese whose homes were destroyed days after the ceasefire.

As for kid books, etc. I used to listen to the Lone Ranger, Sky King, and Sargeant Preston of the RCMP on the radio pre-tv. Right now however can’t remember the name of his dog.
“Astro” the Jetson’s dog turns up in crosswords, but haven’t seen Sgt. Preston’s in years.

Case for Impeachment authors were posting in Salon TT last week.

the Exile @111:

“The people of New York and New Orleans share one thing in common, they both had to suffer a great deal of death and suffering as a direct result of the negligence (at minimum) of G.W. Bush and his nightmare of a Dream for America and a New Middle East.”

The authors of the book “The Case for Impeachment” were on C-Span yesterday on Book TV. John Conyers appeared briefly and spoke. They cited NO as an example rising to the level of criminal negligence, beyond, incompetence, and therefore one of the grounds for impeachment.

Also heard George Lakoff on the subject of his book on Freedom and how differently it is understand by conservatives and progressives. It was a revelation. Come to think of it, Lakoff would make an interesting guest @ FDL Book Salon.

Riesz Fischer @39:
Poe would make my hair stand on end…The Tell Tale Heart. I don’t know if it was because I had a vivid imagination or it was Poe’s writing, probably both.

Oklahoma kiddo @108: I remember Lassie and Rin Tin Tin and the Lone Ranger. Rocky and His Friends. If I remember right, my favorite was the dog that would take the little boy on adventures through history.

Russian sage is one of my favorites. Hardy in zone 5, and seems impervious to humidity. It’s flowers are absolutely delicious mixed in butter and spread over some crunchy toast or fish or poulty.
Also l Iove red bee balm, that has been blooming here since early July.

We had tons of swallowtails on our lilacs and now the monarchs have been around the bee balm. Hummingbirds have been plentiful too.

I read tons of Dr. Seuss, later Nancy Drew and Enid Blyton, later still Tolkien and Poe. Also our Book of Knowledge encyclopedia. I found the images fascinating and the plasticy overlay pages that built the human body from the skeleton, different systems through to the skin, it was way cool.

Does anyone remember the series of the childhood biographies of famous Americans for children?

All prefaced with the adjective “young.” Young Abe Lincoln. Young George Washington. I thought the covers were orange. All the illustrations were silhouettes.

One I remember in particular was the Wild Bill Hickock story. Young James Butler Hickock participated with his family in the “Underground Railroad,” smuggling escaped slaves north.

The author apparently harbored some racism, and made a few editorial comments on the black refugees that would not pass muster in today’s society. I have looked for a copy of that one just to see whether it is still in circulation.

In addition to the Young Americans series, I also read everything on the SF shelf, and everything by Jim Kjelgaard, who wrote animal stories. I passed on the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys series, because after reading two or three, the formulaic aspect was overwhelmeing even to me.

There was a joke book called “A Treasury of Laughs” that I checked out and renewed so often that the library rationed me.

NeoLeftist @ 165

I am completely jealous! I lived about two miles from the MN state fair while in HS and went every day — in search of Tiny Donuts and girls. It’s one of the few things I’ve really missed living here in Colorado.

Sorry to hear there are no girls in Colorado…I’ll take that into account during my job search.

Mad Dog at 18

Our State Fair opened its normal 2 week run yesterday.

With the perfect weather we’ve got, might have to go to the fair and nosh me some foot long hot dogs, fresh-made “Tiny Tim” donuts, and ice-cold milk!
