– Bob Geiger has pulled some great cartoons for this Saturday. They are amusing, and infuriating at the same time. Which is your favorite? I’m partial to the Horsey, myself.
– C&L has video of Christopher Hitchens flipping off Bill Maher’s audience. First Ann Coulter goes bonzer yo yo, and now this. What’s in the green room water lately?
– Scout Prime and Lb0313 are live-blogging the NOLA bloggers conference.
– This from Billmon would be funny, if it weren’t so freaking true.
– Nostradumbass. Bwahahahahahaha…TBogg is just funny.
– Will Bunch, at Attytood, has more information on Hildy Halley. And Will asks a good question:
One anti-war widow said she used the opportunity to voice her objections to Bush’s policies.
"I said it’s time to stop the bleeding," said Hildi Halley, whose husband, Army National Guard Capt. Patrick Damon, died June 15 in Afghanistan. "It’s time to swallow our pride and find a solution."
She said Bush responding by saying "there was no point in us having a philosophical discussion about the pros and cons of the war."
Why not? Seriously. Who better to have "a philosophical discussion about the pros and cons of the war" than the one person who, unlike the rest of us mere mortals, can start a war and send off men and women to wage it, to kill or be killed, with a single phone call?
And who better to have that discussion with, than the wife of a man who paid the ultimate price for that presidential order?
People often say that Bush is "sincere" in his religious beliefs, but we’d say more accurately that Bush is sincere in believing that he acts as a man of faith. But how can he reconcile some of the decisions that he has made in the Oval Office with true Christian teachings?
Yes, that’s a philosophical discussion. And with the world teetering on the brink, we couldn’t think of a better time to have it.
Why not, indeed. Greg Sargent has much more at TPM Cafe.
– Lindsey posts a picture that just makes me laugh.
– …and this is still funny.
– Laura Rozen has more on the Fred Fleitz ginned up intel extravaganza from last week.
– Lawyers, Guns & Money and Pam’s House Blend tackle Alabama.
– Wolcott and titties. ‘Nough said.
– And this is just wrong on so many levels…
(Happy birthday, *ilson!)

Helloooo…
I watched Maher last night. Hitchens is an ass. He ruined the show.
Darn! I missed “pull up a chair.” And with the last load of my home-grown peppers drying in the oven…..
And nothing brightens up my Saturday morning more than a couple of giggling girls…
bdu at 5 — I thought this pix was adorable. :)
lime kool aid?
or just some nasty, whiny, slimy, grumpy microorganisms.
Hope you feel better soon Christy…On Monday, I’m taking my 2 kids (ages 6 and 3) to meet Jim Webb at the opening of his Richmond campaign office. It will be their first civics lesson.
Christy, of all your classic pix, that one’s the classicalist! Did you raid somebody’s MySpace site? :-)
P.S. Get well soon!
Pull up a gurney and get strapped-in because the nation is full of absolute lunatics.

P.S. Can we all pitch in a find a suitable liver donor for old Hitchens. He’s looking puffy and waxen and the clock is ticking on that organ.
Jane S., Dana and I are planning on being there too. Hope to meet you there! I was supposed to work the Farmers’ Market this morning but the event got cancelled.
Hitchens was upset because there wasn’t any scotch in his water. Or that there was water at all.
Maybe it was gin.
I must say it’s good to have Maher back. Hitchins flipped the bird on the audience several times. Without his finger he is still a pompous windbag. He basically cut off Max Cleland several times. Demanded Al-Qaeda was in Iraq before 9-11. As a compliment he is Tony Blakely with an accent. I wonder if Wolcott has to work with that fellow?
Soap on a fuse!
Dru, I was actually just about to leave to pick up my daughter but look for me. I’ll be the crazy lady with the pretty 6 year old daughter and a cute little 3 year old boy. I look forward to meeting another FDLer!!!
Slow-Joe had his “The Kiss” float.

Great links, Christy!
The Will Bunch piece has an update at the end, linking to a Greg Sargent report at TPMCafe of his interview with Hildi Halley, the widow who spoke with Bush. She challenges Bush very directly, pushing him as a Christian to live by his faith and not just mouth it.
That’s how someone can put faith in action! She knew she had one shot at raising her views with Bush, and she took him on at his most vulnerable point from a faith point of view – his pride – and followed it with the obligation to admit mistakes and make amends. If it gets him to think at all – even a little bit – she’s done something huge.

OK, that’s really bizarre. The girl on the right in the picture, if I’m not totally mistaken, is my friend Moye Ishimoto while she was still in college. I even recognize her watch. She was from LA, always very fashionable. (Her hair has changed since.) And I recognize that other girl. Did you gank that pic from her friendster profile or what? I’m e-mailing her to ask, but it’s be cool if you guys somehow knew her.
Morning, folks!
I wholly support the effort of calling out and mocking these asshats. Relentlessly. It is probably the most effective way of reaching those who aren’t paying enough attention, while keeping our sanity at the same time.
“Hillary Clinton pledges to back Lamont”
Interesting Stamford Advocate article about Joe’s response to the meeting and the coordinated response from Hillary and Ned. Howard Wolfson, Hillary’s spokesman, has a tremendous platform from which to hammer Joe. Dan Gerstein, Joe’s spokesman, doesn’t.
Anyone know when we’ll get another report on Joe’s fundraising? If that goes south, I think a lot of other Dems will follow Hillary’s lead. At that point, they’ll start asking Joe not just to withdraw, but also to explicitly endorse Ned.
I’ll be looking for you Jane S! and thanks for the link Prof, that photo made my day!

I guess Joe won’t read this until after sundown tonight. At which point, he’ll prolly lose his cocktail.

Ha! OK, so I recall way back when in 1999 or whenever that was (it seems but a dream now) and thinking on many, many, many – well, yes, EVERY occasion upon seeing George W. Bush on the teevee that no one, and I do mean NO one, would ever elect such an inarticulate smarmy wannabe as President of the United States. So I have to say now when I see George W. Allen, I get the major creeps because he just may be the next one if we don’t get our act together as a nation. As dumb and arrogant and clueless as they come. Feingold, are you listening?
In the Bob Geiger link, I like the Oliphant cartoon with W as the jester and Cheney as the King. The same theme, without the humor is pounded today in Robert Kuttner’s op-ed, “The Cheney Presidency,” in the Boston Globe:

They will get their war in Iran one way or another. The hysteria is reaching a fever pitch….from all of the usual suspects…There was an article in Haaretz about whether or not Bush will “castrate” himself by NOT nuking Iran.
Money quote:
“Simply put, a government which is unwilling to use its power – and whose enemy knows of its unwillingness – has no power.
The sobering lose-lose coda:
A nuclear superpower that is unwilling to use the Bomb – and whose enemy knows of its unwillingness – has no bomb.”

Yep, and so do Pombo and the guy Charlie Brown is running against in California. What’isname?
Afternoon, everyone…taking a short break from cleaning…somehow, when our older daughter moved out, her room turned into the “can’t figure out what to do with this, so I’ll put it in here” room. Then, last year after my uncle died and we cleaned out his house, we put a bunch of boxes in there. Now, my mom is getting ready to move into a retirement community, and will be giving us some furniture, so I am attempting to get the room cleaned out.
Of course, after it’s cleaned out, it needs to have the wallpaper border stripped, and the walls primed and painted – which will be no easy task, as my daughter painted stuff on the walls whenever the spirit moved her – which apparently was often. I was one of those moms who said, “it’s your room – knock yourself out!” My kids loved me for it, but maybe I should have instituted the “leave it as you found it” rule for when they started moving out. Still got one at home, so maybe it’s not too late!
But…can’t do much until the remnants of history and other people’s lives have been sorted and disposed of in one way or another. Am making progress, but it’s slooooow.
Don’t have much to contribute in the way of giggles, but it was nice to come here and find some handy.

See, that’s why a pick up truck makes a good stage. It’s harder to push a pick up truck around.
Lest we forget what Hitchens was trying to articulate when Maher’s audience pissed him off, he was advocating all-out War with Iran. Daniel Schorr on NPR this morning is advocating all-out war with Iran. Kos has a thread going with commenters bringing in examples of more and more pundits and political figures laying out the case for all-out war against Iran:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/26/63846/7347
I collected these examples yesterday:
The ever-adorable Walter Williams says “Does the United States have the power to eliminate terrorists and the states that support them? In terms of capacity, as opposed to will, the answer is a clear yes.
“Think about it. Currently, the U.S. has an arsenal of 18 Ohio class submarines. Just one submarine is loaded with 24 Trident nuclear missiles. Each Trident missile has eight nuclear warheads capable of being independently targeted. That means the U.S. alone has the capacity to wipe out Iran, Syria or any other state that supports terrorist groups or engages in terrorism — without risking the life of a single soldier.” – http://www.townhall.com/column…..end_itself
Ha Aretz’s Aluf Benn on the appointment of IDF General Elyezer Shkedy as IDF “campaign manager” for the war against Iran:
“As part of his new responsibilities, Shkedy will act as “GOC Iran Command”: He will oversee battle plans and manage the forces if war breaks out. According to a security source, Shkedy will be the “orchestra conductor,” coordinating the operational activity of Mossad and Military Intelligence with the IDF’s various operational branches. ” – http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/754745.html
And this next item borders on the bizarre. The American Rabbinical Council seems to be saying outright that “Christian” standards should be abandoned in campaigns against Israel’s enemies”
“Our traditional sensibilities tell us that it is not right to risk the lives of our soldiers to minimize civilian deaths on the other side,” he said.”
“”Our corrupt military morality, which tells us that our soldiers must endanger their lives to protect enemy civilians, is the reason we lost the war,” said Eliyahu.
“Anti-Semites demand that we use Christian morality while our enemies act like barbarians,” said Drori, accusing the IDF of adopting “Christian morality” as its own.”
http://mparent7777.livejournal.com/11688123.html
The stage is being intensively set for pre-emptive nuclear war, my friends.
Too many fresh giggles there to link to, so just Google “Katherine Harris” and take yer pick . . .
Here is some great reading and some great amunition for all of the “Bill Clinton did nothing about terrorists” whining by the Bush/Coulter Republicans.

I have a criticism of the americablog story about Allen. The photo is of people attending the protest downtown. The article describes a law student from UVA (where my folks met!) asking Allen on camera (that morning) why he used to have a noose in his office. After that, the Sen. was supposed to make an appearance downtown, where these and other protesters were. He skipped the downtown appearance and went straight on the Hershey plant.
just feel like the americablog post gives the impression that these particular protesters had a specific interaction with Sen. Allen, but it doesn’t sound like they did. I would rather hear more about that law student.
Shopping Spree at Focus on the Family
And the lesson to be learned in that tidbit from lotus, is that the philosophy of “what happens in the campaign, stays in the campaign” is not one that any consultant or strategist or campaign functionary subscribes to, so always assume that whatever happens will be made public…and it will be timed for maximum damage.
oops. here is the link to the main article.

You piqued my curiosity, but I will be damned if I’ll register to assuage it, lol.
John C at 98 — thanks for TNH linky. The polls tell us the Bush Admin is now the outlier.
I did see a discussion earlier this week that said that well publicized terror incidents, such as the UK arrest of airline plotters, cause temporary spikes in Bush terror approval rating, but then the numbers soon settle down until the next incident. So I was curious to see the Boston Globe front page on the diversion of six US flights yesterday — but I haven’t seen any followup in national media. 5 of the 6 diversions were quickly found to be false alarms, and the 6th remains ambiguous. If these things become perceived as, “they’re crying wolf again; ho hum,” then even the spikes might be less, and that’s the last manipulative tactic Rove has. I expect them to try different “incidents” between now and November, testing the response to see what works best and for how long — e.g., two days before the elections.
Does anybody have the link to the Coultergeist melt down? Was it water or sunlight?

My take on Coultergeist (and many of her ilk, Mary Matalin is the same way) is that debating them is a waste of time. A debate presupposes that the other person is willing to really engage what you said. Coultergeist has no interest in that. She’s just trying to score debating points.
Mary Matalin and MoDo were on MTP a few months ago, along with others. Nobody appeared to lay a glove on Matalin, because she is very adept at appearing to be responding to what was said, but she just kept spewing her

tag team steel caged deathmatchonline chat, however, between any two of the FDLers mentioned above and Coultergeist, Matalin. I doubt either Coultergeist or Matalin want any part of that. It’s too transparent and they know they’d be laughing stocks afterwards.Hi everybody, just fitzin by to see what everybody’s up to.
Hey, Christy said fuck! [swoon]
I am on day four of freedom from smoking cigarettes!
Hey, Sharkbabe – congrats on the no smoking thing! When I quit – gosh, it’s been like 27 years ago – I carried an unopened pack of cigarettes around with me for an entire year. Somehow, just knowing I had them made it easier not to smoke. Hang tough!
inthedoghouse @116 thankee.
May she continue to melt until she returns to her original slime puddle life form of anti matter.
Sharkbabe @ 133
Sharkbabe, congratulations!
Are you on the patch, gum, anything to help?
I have known a lot of addicts, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, …. and they all said, nothing was as tough to part with as cigarettes.
Slips are part of the recovery process. Good luck.
John Casper, yeah, maybe the point of our fantasy is that Coultertypes are about propaganda performance art. A real debate under real rules would cramp their styles and expose them for the intellectual lightweights they are.
Sharkbabe, good on ya! Keep it up!
Sharkbabe @

Sharkbabe, Congrats on the no smoking!
Look at it as depriving RJR Reynolds from giving campaign money to the Jesse Helms types.

Sharkbabe! Way to go, good luck this time, hon. Hope you have a substitute backup vice for whenever the craving overwhelms you.
boy, this is strange – 2 U.S. citizens have been denied reentry into the U.S. because they are on the no-fly list… via Raw Story by way of the San Francisco Chronicle
al-Scooter at 130:
A prophetic quote from that TNH piece:
Sure enough, there’s a long article in the NYT today talking about who all the Dem committee chairman would be if the Dems win the House, and quoting Repubs about how scary that will be.
The article is “Issues Await if Democrats Retake the House,” by Carl Hulse. Unfortunately, it seems to be behind the wall.
astralplame @ 97
Astral — Here’s a link to his diary at dkos. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/25/1617/66436 Mike Stark has just started law school, but had previously achieved some fame and no little glory in asking embarrassing questions of right wing radio call-in show hosts.
Thanks for that tip, Anne — maybe that will finally work for me!
And John C,
would be such stuff as dreams are made on!
I’m having a wonderful time – I feel like I’ve been let out of prison. I still go out for “smoke” breaks but just breathe and watch the smokers. Not using any gum or stuff. Just a book by Allen Carr called Easy Way to Stop Smoking.
I quit once before, for 12 years! before letting myself fall into the trap again. Amazing the stupid shit we do, no?
doghouse #136:
They’ve been working that angle with Conyers for a while now, but I’ve seen a ramp up in recent days with other Dems. And, of course, the whole Lamont thing has been so far over the top, it’s ludicrous.
Anyway, I think it’s great that they’re handing the Dems an opportunity to showcase a positive direction for the country. If the Dems can do that much, the GOP will have nowhere to go.
Brava, Sharkie, and thanks for that book heads-up!
Hi everyone…I haven’t been around much, but I do check in to read.
I just wanted you all to know that Larry Kissell went head-to-head for the first time with Robin Hayes today and it was a thing of beauty. Larry stood his ground and just basically (in a nice Larry Kissell kind of way) stuck the knife in and twisted it – over and over again. When Robin Hayes went up to speak he was off his game. He tried to respond to Larry’s speech, but stumbled a bit. He did a typical canned Hayes speech but if you’ve seen him much you could tell he was caught off guard. If this is any indication of how the debate will go in October we have us a winner… (OK..I know…GOTV)
Sharbabe @133 – Way to go. I’m pulling for you. I need to do that – only eliminate food, not smokes.
Sorry if this is old news, I scanned comments briefly but didn’t see it mentioned. (It is getting harder every day to keep up!)
LIE-berman Considers Iraq Pull-out
Someone needs to make a new, improved “Kiss Float” and add a large pair of FLIP-FLOPS.
al-Scooter. Yup. The nice thing about the NYT article is that it provides a long, wide column showing side-by-side the names and pics of the current Repubs and the likely Dem replacements for every major House Committee, while listing the expertise and possible agendas of each potential Dem committee chair. There are a couple of questionables, but for the most part, you look down that list and say, “yeah, I’d vote for that,” and its 180 degrees from current policy (or lack thereof).
OldCoastie @ 140
Is fascism gonna be like global warming, i.e. ever accelerating till critical? It’s seeming like it.
Wow, OC, that sfgate story is a complete chiller. How many repeats of it are there apt to be if the ACLU or somebody can’t get this before a judge soon?
Sharkbabe @ 147
this issue, and what it could unleash in our country, has been troubling me lately.
I’m curious, how did Bill Maher handle Hitchens? One thing that I don’t like on that show is that Bill let’s those fuckers tell their lies and rarely tells them they are full of shit.
Actually, the Carl Hulse story is accessible:

I think the ACLU has the case… but STILL! when was the last time you heard of a U.S. citizen (and I’m sure in possession of their passports) not being allowed to come home? stopped at the airport and sent back to a foreign land?
christy said a swear!
Ruh-oh — here comes this afternoon’s storm. My best to McNerney . . .
Twisted – I thought Bill improved, but allowed a couple of sliders.

Thanks for the heads-up . . . but has anyone warned Jerry about the hilarity that he’s following when he walks into the (virtual) room? I think it may be like arriving late at at party that’s cranking hard, and it may take him a while to get up to speed – or for us to slow down!
Pombo has got to go – how can we help?
I think Redd was trying to say duck, but she has a bad cold.
“wake the duck up”
yeah, that’s the ticket. *g*
be safe, lotus!
I’ve got to get off of here now… there needs to be 2 of me – one to do the housework and one to hang out here… painters are coming Monday and oh my, have I got a lot to do!

You have been so kind about him, thank you

Capt sent me an e-mail a day or two ago saying he is walking at least 150 feet.
What’s wrong with this picture?
From the BBC today a story entitled:
“Bush promises to learn from Katrina mistakes”
Wouldn’t this have been an appropriate title, oh say, in the weeks after Katrina and not a year out? Isn’t this emblematic of the failures of this Administration, that even after a year it still promises not deeds?
oh, and uh… if you haven’t been over to HopeSpringsATurtle’s piece yet to read about her experiences in Germany… well, it should be required reading for every politician

Hey so this isn’t huge news or anything, but I’m happy to say that the local Democrats here in Greenwich, CT, have overwhelmingly passed a resolution demanding that President Clinton call for Lieberman to withdraw from the race.
Also, EPU’d:
Peace.

Hey Kai do you live in Greenwich?

Sure do.
I grew up in OG, graduated from GHS in 85. My brother still lives there, in Cos Cob.
You just KNOW that will be how Joe Lieberman wins the election.
EPu’d again but,
hopeless luddite that i am, can someone help me find Hunter’s post (i think it was at Kos) about the puditocracy. it was a fantastic rant. side-splitting. i thought i remembered finding it through Hullabaloo or Whiskey Bar which linked back to Kos but i’m not having any luck going along those routes. Help!
lotus @ 159
Yep, it’s storming here too, lotus.
Now EPU’d, I wonder if any of you saw this excellent piece on Sidarth in yesterday’s WaPo: The last graph was moving to me: “Back at school in Charlottesville now, Sidarth has taken his new, unwanted fame with him.
Larry J. Sabato, an oft-quoted political pundit who teaches a small, popular seminar on campaigns and elections, said he asked students to write an essay as part of the admission process. Eighty people applied for the course, including Sidarth. His essay was just three words long — but it was enough to clinch one of the 20 coveted spots in the class.
‘I am Macaca,’he wrote.”

Re: Katherine Harris “is now saying that only Christians should be elected to public office.”
Because, in her words, to do otherwise is to legislate sin! Someone here in Ohio emailed me about that yesterday. It just reeks. What can you say about someone like that? I get too angry to speak.
Hi Twisted Martini,
Nice to meet you! I live in the woodsy part of Greenwich, toward the NY border. I actually watched the Aug. 7 election results at a tavern in Cos Cob. It can be a pretty fun area, if I may say…
Cheers.
PS- I also happen to enjoy my martinis up with a twist. ;-D
Ms. Redshift and I were in the audience for Bill Maher last night! Hitchens is an even bigger asshole in person than on TV. In addition to flipping off the audience twice and generally using the argument that anyone who disagreed with him was an idiot, he also said Elvis Costello “sounds Irish,” (which pretty much went by everyone on the show, but was clearly intended as an insult, like “sounds French”) and made similar insinuations toward Spike Lee.
Maher didn’t do too bad, I thought. In addition to using the right-wing tactic of pissing people off rather than offering any real argument, Hitchens also use the ploy of saying things so obviously false (rather than just a conservative slant) that no one was prepared for them. (Kinda like in the 2000 debate when Bush claimed credit for a Texas patient’s bill of rights that had passed over his veto.) I believe Maher at one point did actually say to him “you have to know that’s not true.”
He slipped out without warning while the lights were down; he was probably afraid we were going to lynch him. *g*
But Elvis Costello and Max Cleland were great, and it was fun to see Markos.
egregious @ 35
I am so glad to see egregious, 5-7-5 not withstanding.

Sharkbabe, way to go!!! You’ll be surprised at how many handy little paperclip holders you have now, and the nifty pull-out mint dispenser under your car radio.
Good on you!
I think Bill Maher will be on Larry King on Monday night.
The latest from another batshit insane Repub:
U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris has stunned Democrats and some in her own Republican Party by saying that the separation of church and state is “a lie” and that God never intended the country to be a “nation of secular laws”.
Harris first came to national attention as Florida’s Secretary of State when she certified George W. Bush as the winner in the state over Al Gore in 2000. She then capitalized on the notoriety to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now in a primary battle for the GOP nomination to run for the Senate.
She made her remarks on religion and the Constitution in an interview this week with the Florida Baptist Witness, a weekly publication put out by the Florida Baptist State Convention.
Harris told the Witness that not electing Christians to office would allow Congress to “legislate sin,” and that “everything I do” is a product of her religious faith.
She went on to call same-sex marriage one example of sin. Harris voted in favor of a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage. The measure failed to get enough votes in Congress to advance.
Harris told the publication that “we have to have the faithful in government” because it’s ” God’s will”.

lotus — ah, that was awfully sweet of you. I don’t know if I’d want to be in the same room with Coulter. My blood pressure couldn’t handle — or I’d be tempted to do her bodily damage.
Posting this from the floor of the Michigan Democratic Party Convention, FirePups, sending you a shout-out. I had the incredible privilege to chat with emptywheel today; she totally rocks!! We have a great group of folks here, most of whom post or read MichiganLiberal.com regularly, attending or panelists on the first Bloggers’ Caucus. You can catch some of the speeches at that site now; Matt of MichLib is posting from the “blog pen on the fly.
Need to head down to the 4th Congressional District Caucus in a couple minutes, just thought I’d stick my head in and see how things were going here at the Lake. Check in again later this evening, FirePups!
Boffo, Rayne — looking forward to it!
(P.S. I wasn’t being “sweet” — “calculating as hell,” more like).

Hitchens showed how little class he truly posesses. He’s a giant, scotch-soaked turd that can talk with a poncey British voice. That snide remark about Elvis Costello shows how loathesome he really is.
Ever notice how googley-eyed Hitchens gets when he tells the big lies about Iraq? You can almost hear his brain switch from gray matter to white matter. I’d love to play poker with that wet-brain egotist.
