I’m going to a really fun street festival in LA this weekend called Sunset Junction. Mostly just to hang out, but I also want to see the reunion show of a band I used to like called Redd Kross. When I first moved to LA I would go to see them all the time. Their live shows were rockin’ and the band came with a bonus…brothers. Not an entire band of brothers (Jackson Five), but only two.
I like seeing bands with two brothers because you often get a glimpse into the friendship and love of the relationship. Just as interesting, you sometimes get a glimpse of rivalry or even violence.
I’ve seen many a show by a band with two brothers called Bluebird. One time I saw the bass playing brother spit on the drummer brother in between songs in their set. The drummer brother then flew over the drum kit and a knock down drag out fight ensued on stage. One of them even said "go suck your mommas titties". (Yes, they have the same mother).
There is a new movie out called Brothers Of The Head about two conjoined, rivalrous twins who become rock stars. I can’t vouch for the movie, but the book by Brian Wilson Aldiss was really good.
So this weeks Spin goes out to the brothers who’ve given us great tunes and just a little bit o’ drama.
I’d love to hear The Spin You’re In in the comments section.

Donita!
Things are going so swimmingly in Afghanistan that Iran.
-Afghanistani Annie
Given all the horsing around in the last thread, I’ve got the Blues Brothers spinning in my head.
Les Brers (sp?) in A minor by Gregg and Duane Allman !
Meat Puppets!
Love their song Swimming Ground from way back when hehe.
One of the things I love about brothers acts – sister acts too, but that’s another thread – is that for a lot of them, the harmony and interplay is something they’ve been doing their whole lives. Lots of groups work at that for years before getting it down pat.
Donita dear… talking about brothers… I saw your yard sale itens with something by Bee Gees in a box… hahaha so cool!
rock on!
ps: I’m trying to e-mail your official website but my messages are returning… oh well…
Twolf1,
I left you an attaboy last thread.
How about the brothers Robinson?
The Black Crowes – ‘She Talks to Angels’

;-)
Redd Kross rules. I miss their Neurotica-era stuff.
I guess you’ll be the “Lady in the Front Row?” :-) Honestly, it’s hard for me to imagine Redd Kross without Eddie Kurdziel, but life goes on.
Neville Brothers
I heart the Everlys.
A lot.
Bustednuckles @ 8
I tried to answer your question @ 209 back there for you.
Check out a band called Crash Davis in Santa Monica…playing at the Temple bar. Crashdavismusic.com.

thanks guys.
Thanks again to Finifinito for the tech help. He was in the middle of moving and packing and other stressful events. He’s a sweetie pie that one.
My I-Mix won’t open. The individual songs link to I-tunes but not the I-Mix. Anyone else having that problem? Fini isn’t around right now.
Billy K @ 10
I heard that their reunion line-up is the Neurotica era with Robert Hecker on lead guitar

It opens fine for me.
I heard that their reunion line-up is the Neurotica era with Robert Hecker on lead guitar
That is indeed the case, though Hecker’s now bald.
OK. George Allen, meet firedoglake!
angie has pointed out what is also obvious to E. J. Kessler, author of the article on Allen in today’s issue of “Forward.” Remember how pumped Limbaugh, Hannity and O’Reilly got when Madeleine Albright’s Jewish heritage and her apparant ignorance of that heritage came out?
Allen appears to have either played down to the point of hiding or is intentionally hiding his Jewish heritage from the world. The gulf between his claims that his mother was “Italian, French and a little Spanish,” statements over the years by Allen family members and research by geneologists and historians since the “macaca” incident appear to me to leave Allen vulnerable to some serious questions about why he can’t face up to his heritage.
A heritage he should be proud of, rather than hiding……
Two more great brother bands: Shoes (my perennial faves) and Oasis (where the violence was more than occasional).
Two more brother bands: Shoes (my perennial faves), featurinf the Murphy brothers, and the Gallaghers of Oasis (where the violence was more than occasional).
Hey, FDLers! I saw this at DKos–I’m sure everyone over here will get a laugh out of it.
OT – Chimpy had requested that the HOV lanes on I-395 in VA be shut down so he could get to and from Allen’s fundraiser easily. They said no LOL.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01627.html
Hmm, I had a comment about other brother bands which seems to have been snagged. Odd.
So why is it called “Strawberry Letter 23″ when they sing about “Strawberry Letter 22″ in the song?
That’s always bugged me…
Donita, as soon I got far enough to see the theme of this week’s spin, I thought of Up on the Sun.
You rule.
I’m thinking Lamont is going to start looking like a frontrunner this coming week, but that Webb hasn’t put Allen away yet. We need to help push this most recent Allen question.
You can write to E. J. Kessler at letters@forward.com
the link to Kessler’s article, which is quite good:

Funny. I packed Redd Kross’s “Neurotica” to play tonight at a DJ thing I do. I grew up on that stuff. You’re a teenager on the run… Lovedolls!!!!!!!!!!!
ps- someone is really giving Jane a hard time over on Huffpost.
Also AC/DC…..
Donita-
i just LOVE the videos you choose each week! It’s a real treat. I remember seeing the Kink’s in Providence the night they recoreded LOLA live. Thanks for this. ;-)
I’m really loving the new Thom Yorke (Radiohead) solo album… it’s unsettling and simple, while still remaining catchy, lacks all the anthemic heavy-handedness of recent Radiohead material (not to knock it, it’s great), it’s more idioteque than 2 2=5.
TRex and I used to play together from time to time.
You can imagine what it’s like to play in a band with a 60ft. thunderlizard, though. Not a lot of room for discussion…
Hey Donita,
Have you heard this group?
Hundred Year Flood
Yay, Redd Kross! Any band that has recorded a song referencing Donita is on the right page in my book!
***
I like “Show World,” a lot. Donita, I do believe I once made a mix tape for your old roadie, Ali, and dedicated “Mess Around,” to her. (And maybe “I Want You,” by KISS, too.) [sheepish grin]
Have fun at the show!
nicelyput2000 @ 31
I saw the kinks when I was about 17. I was up in front against the stage. Ray was singing right in front of me. I grabbed his leg between the ankle and the calf. I just held it for a while. I looked up at him and he was staring at me. I must have been holding it for a while. I got embarrassed. I LOVE THE KINKS
Good pick on Strawberry Letter 23.
Been a lurker here for a while… this is by far my favorite thread in firedoglake. Donita, you rock. Love the iTunes mix too!
did Redd Kross reference Donita??? I know the band Best Kissers in the World wrote a song called “Working on Donita” That was genius. :-)
No Ramones? What the hell?
hey donita!
great video!! gosh, i love ray davies! speaking of brothers in bands, how about WOOL? great band–i saw them a few times. i also witnessed some intense sibling rivalry one night on stage as well!!
LOVED the brothers johnson track!!
Margot @ 36
Thanks for the turn on. I like that song a lot. Everybody should check out that video link
How can you leave out brothers Chip and Tony Kinman? The Southern California legends who started The Dils, Rank & File and Blackbird.
Come on.
I saw Redd Kross with a band called L7 at the Hollywood Palladium.
Sweet list! I do love the Meat Puppets. Haven’t seen them since the mid-90s but the song Sam remains a major fav. Rock on Donita!
Originally I thought the Redd Kross brothers were actually sisters
^_^
The spin I’m in this week includes a healthy dose of 80s antifacism
Go4 and Heaven 17
Other than that, I’m trying to figure out whether thenew Sonic Youth, Rather Ripped, will sound so good next year.
Here’s a place for the Bush Presidential Library: Milwaukee has been ranked by Forbes.com as “America’s Drunkest City”. There’ll be no papers so the place could just serve drinks and play music.
One of the Meat Puppets brothers got busted (again)here in Phoenix a year or so ago. Went “postal” at in the post office parking lot or something!
Love the Meat Puppets though, but the best AZ band now is Toyko Electron.
Donita @ 42,
Glad you like them, they’re a NM band. I got turned on to them by my friend Steve in Santa Fe.
And I love the Kinks too. Never saw them live, though…lucky you!
I saw a concert that I still don’t know who the main band was, can’t remember, because the first band that played blew me away. It was Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies, and no one around me had ever heard of her.
Hey ice weasel,
Were you a commenter at James Kunstler’s? I think I saw you at driftglass. I enjoy your comments wherever I see them.
On music:
My brother and I were in a band in the 80’s called The Scarborough Dirt Band in Daytona FL.
ice weasel beat me to the kinmans. the dark-haired one definitely had the temper in the family.
Dave and Phil Alvin mix it up, too.
What about brother/sister? Willie Nelson and his sister are in fine form on the greatest live country album ever, Willie & Family Live. Sure, there’s not as much drama in that relationship, but you can’t have everything.
first of all, to Colin: the ramones weren’t brothers!
donita–cool that you included the everly brothers. i’ve read that they used to duke it out quite often.
i dig the bluebird track. great story too! are they still together?
personally, i couldn’t imagine working with any of my siblings…..we’d kill each other! ha ha.

Redd Kross referrenced me? I didn’ t know that. Are you sure, what song?
Yes, Al, I know that the Ramones only pretended to be all brothers. It’s quite the open secret.
Perhaps more relevant to previous thread, but time moves on.
One of Sen. Harry Reid’s top people, Stephanie Cutter, is in Connecticut, working for Lamont.
Top Reid consultant also working for Lamont
Some in the comments there indicate that Cutter got some bad reviews in 2004. On the other hand, others think the news is good.
It certainly doesn’t seem to be an overtly friendly act toward Lieberman, but rather a back-of-the-hand to him.
Redd Kross once covered the Kinks’ “Fancy,” IIRC.
Collin @ 54. I’m going to see Willie on Sunday, and yeah that is one of my fave live country albums, rigth there w/ Jerry Jeff Walker’s Viva Terlingua.
Prof — nice link on Reid’s aide helping Lamont. Thanks.
Hey Donita,
They will always be “Red Cross” to me…the first (Posh Boy) 12″ is a classic!
Bad Brains, Earl(drummer) and Daryl(bass).
Awesome band.
vigilant @ 4
Sadly, this song is a tribute to Duane, who had been killed a few months earlier.
I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Oasis.
nicelyput2000 @ 41
The name of the Redd Kross song that really, really, really seems to reference Donita escapes me–I’m at work and can’t dig it out of my music collection. Argh.
I dig that BWITW song, too. :)
wasn’t mark knopfler’s brother in dire straits?

You’re not thinking of “Debbie and Kim,” are you? I think that’s off Third Eye. I wouldn’t confuse Donita with either of them….
Someone might of mentioned it but The Stooges had the Asheton brothers.
Check out ho-hum, featuring the amazing (particularly Lenny, the front man) Bryan brothers of Bradley, Arkansas. Lenny was a prolific writer of wonderful, hook-laden power pop songs; lately they’ve headed more into techno and trance sort of stuff, but it’s still good. More at playadel.com and hts.us

My older brother found out this week what his ship-to-Iraq date is… March, 2007.
Heavy, heavy heart.

I’ll post up the song title I think it is when I get home ’round 2:30 your time. A huge Redd Kross fan and friend, Brian (from the band, Pink Slip), sent it to me years ago… if the HELL7 site was still up I’d be able to answer the question right away! :)
I hope I am remembering correctly ’cause I’ll feel like a super dumbass. .
Did I miss anyone mentioning Credence Clearwater Revival? Surely they should be in this group. John Fogarty didn’t do music for years due to a brotherly battle, iirc.

sorry sticky. that’s a bummer. hopefully by then we will have our government a little more under control and there won’t be the need for so many troops to be in harms way.
And Shoes, of course, who were all over MTV’s opening day. Jeff and John Murphy.

Kurt @ 94:
I wouldn’t claim much for them as traditional musicians (cf. Dexy’s Midnight Runners), but they’re a good pop band. “Letter from America” is a much better song than “500 Miles,” and “Cap In Hand” is as sharp a song about modern colonialism as I’ve heard.

Staple Singers, hello?!
William and Jim Reid – Jesus and Mary Chain.
Donita,
Don’t know if you’ve already done a sisters theme or not but if you haven’t it would be great if you included The Roches. A really special group…….
Fahrender – I have the second installment of Philosophical Dinners w/George. I can post it now, or wait. Either way it will most likely be off topic and this one is longer.
Meat Puppets rule!! I must have seen those guys thirty times in the mid-to-late ’80s. Curt Kirkwood is truly one of the finest guitar players ever, and brother Cris (the one who went off the deep end in a heroin haze) provided some serioulsy whacked bass lines — a lot like Flea. Bostrum on drums rounded out that power trio. Meat Puppets II still ranks as one of my top 10 faves all time. I sure hope for the best for Cris. By all rights he should be dead by now the way he was going. Some folks jusst can’t handle their drugs, ya know?
Edouard and Jean de Reszke, famous opera singers 100 years ago from Poland.
Don’t forget Poland !

The Roches, so good.
And do you like the McGarrigle Sisters? I don’t think I spelled that right. Love them.

NOMEANSNO! 7 Seconds! Both rock!!
NOMEANSNO: Hanson bro #1: another mind-blowing bass player.
Saw 7 Seconds last year in Sacramento (home turf for them I believe) Damn they blew the house down.
Two NYC brothers playing clubs and busking in the city. I think brothers always bring an extra element to any endeavor.

Donita @ 56:
The Redd Kross song that I was told (by a huge RK fan) that is about Donita is “Switchblade Sister” (1993).
Something about “…she says she loves her Flying V more than me….”

Actually there were two sets of brothers in Devo. In addition to Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh there were Jerry and Bob Casale.
Thanks for another great playlist! I’m going to see Redd Kross this weekend.

Hey Donita, speaking of LA sibling bands, don’t forget about Blackbird, AKA the brothers Kinman, Chip and Tony.
Sounds like you and I were around the Hollywood underground scene at the same time. Raji’s, Al’s Bar, the Anti-Club…
A couple more come to mind….
INXS has 3 Farriss brothers.
The Beach Boys had the Wilson brothers..
Speaking of Wilsons, Ann and Nancy Wilson sisters in the band Heart.

Every band I’ve been in for the 10 years I’ve been banding has included my younger brother. He’s my best friend. I can’t imagine making music without him.
Take that, Davies and Gallagher and Farriss and every other brother band.
Absolutely the strangest show I ever saw: Redd Kross opened for GWAR. Unfortunately Redd Kross was not well received by the GWAR crowd.

see above comment.
i have heard the McGarrigal (my spelling, equally suspect) Sisters but not so often (didn’t buy). My Roches are on vinyl which i left in Oregon when i moved to Germany. Gotta get an iPod………….
Love the Kinks. Saw them three times, and countless Ray Davies solo shows.
Other bands of brothers: Oasis, Split Enz, Iggy & the Stooges, Gentle Giant, Sparks….
