Hillary Clinton and Ned Lamont discussing Democratic politics in the lovely sunroom of her Chappaqua home this morning.
In this morning’s NYTimes, Dan Gerstein opened his yap, and said something so moronic, I had to highlight it for everyone here:
“Maybe in Ned Lamont’s naïve, reality-challenged world, he thinks simply by yelling loud enough he would have gotten the White House to give him what he wanted,” Dan Gerstein, Mr. Lieberman’s spokesman, said in a statement. “But that’s not how things work in Washington.” (emphasis mine)
Let’s talk about realities for a moment, shall we? "How things work in Washington" is exactly what got Joe Lieberman in trouble with Connecticut democrats in the first place.
It is why Joe Lieberman is the loser of the Democratic primary. And why Ned Lamont is the winner.
Honestly, if that is the best that you could come up with — the whiny retort — if that’s all you have to campaign on, then you need some serious help. People want accountability, not excuses. And the very last thing you should be doing is reminding them that you work for Joe "go along to get along, whatever you want George, how things work in Washington" Lieberman. That is so far off the mark, I don’t even know where to start.
What people want is a Senator who will stand up to the Bush Administration and demand accountability, not a lapdog of a Senator who continually rolls over and asks for a belly rub:
Michael D. Brown, relieved of his hurricane relief duties Friday, didn’t get much scrutiny from the Senate at a 2002 confirmation hearing.
The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency appeared before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, then chaired by Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., when he was nominated as the agency’s deputy director. The polite 42-minute hearing attracted only four senators, and before it was over, Lieberman offered his support. (Hartford Courant via ConnecticutBlog, emphasis mine)
42 minutes. Way to go, Joe. Asking the tough questions, keeping in mind the needs of the people, the need for accountability, the best interests of public safety. Not.
You know what people want? Honesty, integrity and a Senator who not only understands the meaning of the word accountability — he’s willing to fight for it.
Mr. Lamont, the Democratic candidate for United States Senate who has run as an opponent of the Iraq war, asserted that having large numbers of National Guard troops in Iraq slowed the government’s rescue operations in the aftermath of Katrina a year ago, and he called the administration’s handling of the hurricane “symptomatic” of broader management problems.
“We couldn’t afford to fix those levees,” Mr. Lamont said, speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon.
He also criticized the 2002 decision by Congress, at the behest of the Bush administration, to place FEMA within the Department of Homeland Security, saying it led to mismanagement. He said it should be a cabinet-level agency whose secretary reports directly to the president.
That, my friends, is called standing up, doing the right thing, and being a voice for the little guy. And not only pointing out a problem, but pointing toward a solution — back to the days when FEMA actually worked efficiently and effectively. Yay, Ned.
But, in case Mr. Gerstein doesn’t quite comprehend that whole integrity thing, let me introduce him to another reality – Ned Lamont and Hillary Clinton met this morning to discuss what she is going to be doing to help elect a Democratic Senator for the great state of Connecticut.
The reality of that offer of help is this: the establishment in the Beltway has reached out to Ned, because Joe Lieberman has overstayed his welcome, he has pulled one too many plays out of the GOP playbook and now…he will pay the price for it.
We warned you, Joe, but you chose not to listen. It’s not personal, it’s politics.
What, Dan? You don’t understand where I am going with this. Well, let me be clear. Democratic donors are not going to want to cross Hillary and her political compadres, nor are consultants or other party bigwigs. So whatever hoover-in-the-dough plan you had for them, you’d better re-tool. And GOP-controlled KStreet? They’ve begun to see some handwriting on the wall that all is not well in GOP-ville for the Fall elections, they are off the kool-aid, and they have begun to hedge their bets…and their Republican-funded donations to your PAC-friendly coffers are about to get a lot smaller.
And considering that Ned is closing the gap in recent polling, and that the more people see of Turncoat Joe, the less they want to see…well, you understand where I’m going with this, don’t you? Now THAT is some reality. But, in case that hasn’t sunk in completely, let me help you with a second shot of the great meeting that Ned and Hillary had today:

Oh, and Dan, did I mention that Hillary’s strategic coordination is going to come through Howard Wolfson, as Jane reported earlier. Howard is a political genius, he really gets it — netroots, grassroots, all of the dissatisfaction we’ve all been trying to get into the mix — he GETS it. And his gift is political coordination, which he is going to use on behalf of Ned Lamont, the winner of the Democratic primary in Connecticut. In all honesty, the thought of Tom Swan and Howard Wolfson talking political strategy is…well, it’s genius. Pure genius.
And THAT is some reality for you, Dan Gerstein, lobbyist-turned-Lieberman-spokesperson. 42 minutes to approve Heckuva Job Michael Brown? No real record of holding the Bush Administration accountable? The kiss? Heckuva job, Turncoat Joe — your lobbyist-turned-spokesperson had better learn to tap dance a heckuva lot faster.

Dan Gerstein couldn’t even be a good dogcatcher. I wouldn’t vote for him.
Mora!
Gerstein couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag. Ugly wimp.
WOW, You are on a roll. Lamont needs to hire you, forget those fancy Hillary people.

it looks like Gerstein is going to lose his sugar tit real soon …
Am I the only one, or is the site messed up?
Oooo, I LOVE that red lamp! Where can I get on like it in pale blue?
Dang you were fast Karen!
Not with Lieberman there. BTW – isn’t he supposed to be the “bipartisan, can get things done” guy?
In any event, no one twisted Joe’s arm and made him sign off the report. Dayton, also on his committee, refused to sign off because the President would not produce the information requested and needed. But as he always does when the rubber hits the road, Lieberman sold out his own Democratic committee member and his party, to help the Republicans take pressure off the White House and off the Republican party itself.
And Mr. Gerstein, when will Lieberman stand up and announce the upcoming anniversary of the president’s blatant lie to the American people – that “no one could have predicted” the levees would not hold? If shying away from calling a lie a lie, especially when it impacts on the worst abandonment of Americans on American soil EVER, is “how things work” in Washington, hasn’t Gerstein just explained why CT voters should vote for someone who will point out that the Emperor has no clothes?
Lieberman has Macacaed the whole state of CT and I feel he will find that he like Allen are toast.

Christy, great job. Love the pics. Do you have a “plant” at Bill and Hill’s place? :-)
I wrote early this morning with some specifics about exactly what Lieberman said at Michael Brown’s confirmation hearing. The inane banter and content-free questioning is really quite stunning and infuriating:

That’s the way things are done in Gerstein and Lieberman’s Washington. Which is exactly why we need a Senator Lamont.

One of the reasons Joe lost was that he was seen as a creature of Washington. The message, which Dan is paid large bucks not to get, is that we don’t like the way things are do in Washington these days and we want it to stop.

Scarce at MyLeftNutmeg has some great video of Lieberman failing to take any responsibility for his role in confirming the cartoonishly unqualified Michael Brown:

This one is priceless, and guaranteed to raise your blood pressure. On Michael Brown, Lieberman says, “Let’s not play the blame game.”
Yeah, because Lieberman himself doesn’t want to be blamed for his role, of course.

There was a photo of Lieberman locking lips with Shays on HuffPo today. Man, that Joe really loves gettin gay with Republicans! He’s queerin it up more than Simon Doonan hehe.

blitzer pushing the – “why doesn’t she want to be photographed with Lamont” again
Gerstein is the typical schoolyard bully. Full of threats, sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Kurt @ 28
Kurt, I think that may have been Chris Shays’ head photoshopped onto Bush’s body – it looks like the same pose to me as the one of Bush with Joe.
*ilson caught Wolfie repeatedly saying that “no cameras” were allowed. Anything we can barrage him w/, like the source of what look like photos above?
Speaking of Shays,is anyone hounding HIM with questions about whether or not Rumsfeld responded to Shays’ committee’s subpoena? Asking Lieberman while he’s with Shays what he thinks should happened to Rumsfeld if he won’t respond (and if he says something should happen, then ask him why he thought it was OK for Bush to not respond to Katrina subpoenas from Lieberman’s committee)
And Gerstein is looking and grinning like, uh, Ernie from Sesame Street…

That’s Lieberman in a nutshell. It almost seems like he’s taken every opportunity to screw us while simultaneously making meaningless gestures on our behalf.
In this case, what I have a problem with isn’t that it only took forty-two minutes to conduct the hearing, it’s that it only took forty-two minutes and he supported the guy. That hearing should have gone like this:
Senator: “Mr. Brown, what was your prior experience.”
Brown: “I ran an organization for breeding horses. They went bankrupt, and I applied for this job.”
Senator: “I’ve heard enough. Toss this one back in the water.”
“Am I the only person worried about that blue blown-glass vase on the stand behind the French door?”
Imho, yes. Why? Are you afraid Ned will be playing Frank Drebham in ‘The Naked Gun’ for Hillary?
Is that a quail on the stack of books under the table?
oh and someone needs to shine Ned’s shoes– hey Joe, have I got a job for you!!!
*g*
I know, I know. I always post the same thing – but at least I’m consistent, and that has to count for something.
If the CM were as powerful as we think then Ned wouldn’t have won the primary. People don’t vote b/c of what the pundits/newscasters say. They are not opinion makers, trendsetters, etc. Their opinions and takes on issues are only important to themselves and the politicians who think they gain something (wrongly) by having their positions and themes parroted on TV. Great, so they can watch it – sorta like in V for Vendetta with Prothero wallowing in his own bullshit in the bathroom. There is a lot of truth in movies.
Can you really imagine a voter in CT going: “Hmmmm, Wolf Blitzer says Hillary Clinton won’t be photographed with Ned Lamont. I’m voting for Joe Lieberman?”
It didn’t matter in the primary, and it is not going to matter in the general.
I’m betting the Democrats in CT will be coming home to Lamont, and Hillary and Howard (he IS a genius) can’t hurt.
I’ve also heard that George Allen was expecting to coast to re-election this year and is really unprepared for a tough campaign. (See Dana Millbank in WA PO today)
I work in the same office building as Michael Brown (Ron Brown’s son). He helped counter Coulter the other evening. Would it be stalking to leave a note on his massive Escalade to congratulate him?

My Philosophical Dinners With George. Part II
A Play. In One Act
By Evil “Rushmore” Parallel Universe
Cast: George – George W. Bush; Martin Heidegger – Martin Heidegger
George: Hee…Hee…Hie…Hie….can I call you Marty?
Heidegger: No.
George: You’re not French, are ya? Cause, last week I had dinner with some French fellow named Camus. Karl was crackin-up after the dinner. Told me that this Camus fellow was actually an Ayy-rab, and that ‘cause they’re all terrists, the NSA was goin’ ta listen to all my phone calls now. That Karl……..what a kidder, me with a terrist.
Heidegger: A what?
George: A terrist – an Ayy-rab. Karl told me you were once a Nazeeee? That true?
Heidegger: Yes, I was a Nazi. And I took totalitarian control of the university and we had book burnings.
George: Can I be you? Only kiddin, cause I’m prez-ee-dent of the United States, the most powerful man in the world. And I’m a cowboy. Just so you don’t get any ideas. Wait a minute, you’re pulling my leg. You wasn’t a Nazi. Karl put you up to this. Didn’t he? For my birthday?
Heidegger: No.
George: I thought all philosophers were girlie-men lib’ruls talking bout the meaning of life and ex-ih-sten-tyual-ism.
Heidegger: Goddam French. They’ve never understood me – make us all look like pussies. Who is this Karl? Is he German?
George: Heh, heh, heh. Karl claims to be “Norwegian.” Like anyone believes that. If you really was a Nazi, then I think I might like your philosophies – yer not some lib’rul inter-lectual – you know what needs to be done and how do it. Yer a DECIDER, like me. That’s MY philosophy. DECIDERISM. Get it? Freedom ain’t any good when you’re dead – shee-it, is that so hard to understand. So what is your phee-las-o-phee there, Mr. Hee…Hie….
Heidegger: We must start by examining the ontological questions!
George: …..the Ahn-tee-whatie?*

Okay. So this probably has no bearing on the conversation at all, but I am gonna post it anyway. I don’t always agree with Hillary and would rather see her views as a minority that would force the majority progressive elements of a dominant Democratic Party to remain realistic in their ideology. That, of course, would be after many years of progressive dominance when any ideology (hello conservatism?) begins to see mission creep.
That said: oh my God can you imagine sitting with Hillary in her sunroom?!?! Maybe I’m a bit starstruck by the Clintons, but I wouldn’t know what to say. I’d keep babbling and gushing and looking a fool. Good thing Ned is of greater fortitude than this particular supporter. lol

I doubt it. My only opinion about the couch is that it looks difficult to sit on properly. Maybe it’s just because of the lens they used, but it appears to slope toward the floor.
it is a remarkable development that two women are major leaders of the Democratic Party — Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton. It’s about damn time !

I just can’t see the value in calling for Rumsfeld’s termination. So get rid of the Secretary of Defense. So what. Rove, Cheney, and Bush will remain and so will the policies. And when Hillary, Lieberman or anyone else calls for Rumsfeld’s resignation, it’s seems meaningless and just obvious politics. It’s the policy, stupids!
Check this out from ConnecticutBlog:
“”NEWSFLASH: Lieberman refuses to back Democratic candidates
Okay, we find out that Joe Lieberman hung out with Jodi Rell and Rob Simmons, is endorsed by Nancy Johnson and Chris Shays, and NOW refuses to back Democratic Congressional candidates Diane Farrell, Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy, is it NOW safe to call him the de facto Republican candidate?
Hot off the press from the New Haven Independent
Declaring himself a “non-combatant,” U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in remarks at a New Haven press event Friday, raised anew the question of whether his “independent” candidacy will help Republicans hold onto three Congressional seats in Connecticut — and control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Lieberman — who after losing an Aug. 8 Democratic primary to Ned Lamont has launched a third-party bid to hold onto his seat in the Nov. 7 general election — was asked whether he still endorses Diane Farrell, Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy, three Democrats looking to unseat endangered Republican incumbents Chris Shays, Rob Simmons and Nancy Johnson.
“I’m a non-combatant,” Lieberman declared. “I am not going to be involved in other campaigns. I think it’s better if I just focus on my own race.”
Lieberman made the remarks at a Friday morning photo op held in the rain under an I-95 overpass in the Fair Haven neighborhood to tout his role in bringing $50 million to the state to help ease transportation gridlock.
“It’s a little awkward for me now” to endorse the Democratic candidates in the general election, he said, €œsince they all endorsed my opponent,€ Democratic primary winner Ned Lamont.
The comment was significant because analysts from both major parties believe that Lieberman’s campaign could help the three Republicans keep their jobs in the face of tough challenges. Lieberman’s strongest support — 75 percent in the most recent Quinnipiac poll — comes from Republicans. If he succeeds in drawing more Republican voters to the polls to support his candidacy, that could help the Republican Congressional candidates. Those three races are considered among the 10 most competitive Congressional races in the country; both parties consider the races key to deciding which party controls the House in 2007. National Republican strategists and donors have come forward to help Lieberman’s campaign; party leaders have abandoned the nominal Republican in the Senate race, Alan Schlesinger. Prominent Republicans like Shays and former Republican House leader Newt Gingrich have endorsed Lieberman.
Now, can someone PLEASE tell me why Harry Reid shouldn’t give Lieberman the boot. Not only is he actively running a Republican campaign, he turns his back on three critical Congressional seats which the Democrats need if they ever have a real shot in taking back the House!
In his own words, Joe Lieberman has turned his back on the Democratic Party. Do you really think he’ll work with the Democrats if re-elected? Come on Harry, give him the boot!”"

Yes, the couch is Early Grandmother 1968 but the lamp shape is cool. I might change the color and the shade. That shirred silk is a little dated and it’s too small for the base. A clean, round linen shade would be better.

Rumsfeld is a major Neocon. Kicking him out is like getting rid of Tom DeLay. If you think there are leaks in the proverbial Gooper dyke now, wait and see what happens with him out of there.
Does it solve all the problems? No, of course not. It does however speed up the Republican implosion.
“is it NOW safe to call him the de facto Republican candidate?”
Sure, It’s been safe for a long time. After all, you won’t face harassment for stating this.
What’s needed now is lots of people calling Reid and protesting that Loserman still holds influential positions in the committees that should be reserved for Democrat Senators.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that conversation.
Shame on Senator Clinton for not taking a poll here about what furnishings she should have chosen. Petty, petty is the most civil thing I can say.

Sacramento — An English TV interviewer settled her libel suit against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his staff members Friday, almost three years after it was filed in a London court.
Anna Richardson, who interviewed Schwarzenegger in 2000, claimed in a lawsuit that he touched her breast, made lewd comments to her and then later, as a candidate for governor in 2003, he and members of his campaign staff told reporters that she was the instigator of the incident.
London-based attorneys representing both the governor and Richardson issued a joint statement saying the case had been settled without disclosing any details.
Richardson was one of several women who accused Schwarzenegger of unwanted sexual advances during the closing days of the 2003 recall election in news stories published by the Los Angeles Times.
OK Kiddoe – I actually agree with you for once. It is all bullshit calling for Rumsfield to resign or be fired – appearing to do something by actually doing nothing.

Actually, Brown didn’t run the IAHA. He was the Judges’ and Stewards’ Commissioner. He cracked down on some big name horse abusers and they fought back. The ensuing litigation cost the association a lot of money, but didn’t bankrupt it. So to be accurate, the colloquy should have read: “Mr. Brown, have you ever actually managed anything? Anything at all?” Answer: “No.” Of course, Lieberman wouldn’t have thought that was a disqualifier.

Actually, I think it should have also included the question “Have you ever had any experience that’s relevant to emergency services, other than being an intern many years ago?”, or whatever that entry-level office job he had in some municipal EM department was called.
I hadn’t heard the full story about the IAHA, though. The odd part is that Brown did seem to have a modicum of integrity. He was willing, after the fact, to criticize what he and others were doing and seemed interested in making things work.
He was certainly in way over his head, which I blame him for as well as his bosses, but he seemed to be serious about doing his job well. I think his problems with Chertoff had as much to do with that as with any personal issues the two of them might have had.
I don’t dislike the couch. The room itself it wonderful. It is just the whole thing doesn’t go together very well.
Hey, Hillary has other things on her mind than designing a room. My stuff doesn’t go together very well either, it is just is not that important to me. I have things that I like and are comfortable, and to heck with style. Of course, she could afford to have someone come in and do it. But maybe that would not be that “comfortable”.
Love the red lamp. Love the blue whatever it is. Maybe we should give her a break on design. If she delivers what is promised to Lamont, good for Hillary.

The job will be pried from his cold dead hands, IMHO, but I agree ’tis a consummation devoutly to be wish’d.
Consider: Confirmation hearings of the successor nominee would in effect be a chance to “unauthorize” the War in Iraq and get someone on record on Iran, Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Darfur, Gitmo etc. and be a chance to remind the electorate of all those issues laid waaste to by this administration.
Also, the firewall around the neocon agenda would at least have a chance to be breached as new folks not directly connected to the layers of smegma that has become the DOD. Maybe they will be repulsed or maybe they will like all the filth, lies and carnage they find. but, to paraphrase Bill Murray in “Ghostbusters” they will want their OWN filth, lies and carnage to promote. In other words, they won’t be as invested in the current policies and may want to go on to other bad things, but at least they will be other things. Maybe by then we can use a new Congress to put some limits on those other things.
Besides, really, who could be worse than Rumsfeld? Ok, there’s that, but he’d have to give up the Vice-Presidency.

In effect, Leiberman is McCain (complete with the huge easily bruised ego). By sending Wolfson, Hiollary gets a dry run on the Presidential campaign.
She sees the value, regardless of her personal past with Joe, of getting this valuable experience. Which means, to me, she is now invested in Ned Lamont’s victory. It is not just loaning a consultant, it is pre-viewing the message making necessary to capture the white house.
I really don’t care at this moment if Hillary is a reactionary opportunistic politician — her real investment in Ned’s victory means all the world to winning Connecticut in two and a half months.

Check them online, some things are discounted up to 70%…you can get high quality furnishings for Sears prices, if you are willing to check back often to get exactly what you want.
grray @ 233
Let me see if I can clear something up for you. 99% of the time, the moderation filter pulls things before the “mod” ever sees them. We don’t have any control over that *unless* you have been marked for moderation due to offensive or abusive comments in the past. If your comment goes to the queue, it’s because it triggered a filter. If it *stays* there, or goes in the trash, it’s the moderator.
The moderators work hard here to make sometimes split-second judgements about the appropriateness or viability of comments. Now, if your comment posts and a moderator pulls it, it just goes straight in the trash, not into the moderation queue.
Are you with me? So, don’t rag on the moderators or you’ll never see any of your comments again.
Trex at 234 –
I was joking at 230 — no one asked any moderater to do anything. Not me, not grray.
So back off jack!
“99% of the time, the moderation filter pulls things before the “mod” ever sees them.”
Hmm, interesting. I had the impression this is wordpress softare, and wordpress doesn’t have a filter that pulls four letter words or something like that. It tries to detect spam comments, so it’s sensible towards multipls links. But there’s something like a black list, onbe you get on it (mod decision), every of your comments will be checked before publishing…

grray @ 237
You’re basically up to speed now, yes. We don’t call it a blacklist, but if we’ve had problems with you in the past, your comments will be screened. But those decisions ultimately fall to Christy and Jane.
TRex “If it *stays* there, or goes in the trash, it’s the moderator.”
Clarification- if a comment gets pulled by a moderator because it is questionable/ borderline, it is put into “moderation”, held awaiting the opinion of another moderator, or J or C. Jane and Christy set the rules; the mods try to interpret as best they can.
But sometimes comments do trigger automod- end up automatically in moderation (filter)- for perfectly innocent reasons, and sometimes for reasons that are impossible to figure out. They are “sprung” as quickly as possible.
The best copuch I ever had was one that I looked for for a long time when I lived in Miami. I wanted a curved sectional and I put out feelers to all my friends in design and architecture and this one guy found a couple in Vero Beach who were selling the perfect couch. It was a three piece sectional shaped like a squashed question mark — with a big (40″) ottoman as the third piece that nestled in at one end. The family had the couch custom made in 1956 in Brooklyn. It did, as *ilson mentioned, have the worst most hideous covering ever, including padded and covered legs. Some new legs and fabric later, it was tremendous. It was so big that my current house cannot hold it — I traded for an original Knoll redwood, marble top credenza. Man I miss that couch…..
veruca @ 3:41
Best one I ever found was when I was in college and terminally broke hehe. Went to a local furniture store, and they wanted $250 bucks for this truly hideous navy blue sofa. Was clearly poorly made. The sales clerk heard I was in college and kept trying to get me to buy that thing. On the way out of the store, I saw this beautiful Thomasville camelback sofa…very elegant stripe pattern. It had some minor damage underneath, competely invisible. Picked it up for $300 bucks. (List price was something ridiculous to a working college student, like 2 grand or something hehe).
My mom came to visit me and refused to sit on it! I used to fall asleep on it all the time, it was so comfortable.

You can call it whatever you want. It is one of the many ways that we here at FDL are working hard every day to make our readers’ experience better, and to create an environment that’s safe for people to express views that might earn them scorn and disapprobation in the greater world.
As a result, when we perceive that a person’s comments are crossing a line or attempting to disrupt a thread, we pull them. It’s that simple.
And, to clarify a bit more- it is possible to add terms to the WP filter, but it is not a very sophisticated piece of software at all- and that can produce some unintended consequences, which only come to light in time. Deciding what to add to filter is a real challenge, sometimes.
In the event of rapid thread depressurization, oxen will be run through the blog. Take the ox that is nearest to you and pull it toward you, fastening it securely to your face using the elastic bands. Those of you interested in Danforth: He went to Sudan as a “fact finder” to determine if the Senate should drop sanctions (2001, i think.) . An embassy gofer was designated to find him 2 bottles of Scotch. Not an easy thing to accomplish in Khartoum, but the gofer was resourceful and managed to promptly get what the good senator needed. the gofer told me he was amazed at how quickly the two bottles were consumed. Innuendo perhaps, but drinking, copiously, serious liquor in a country like Sudan was an indication to this guy that Danforth’s craving was way past normal.
