Because nobody could have predicted it — Joe Lieberman will be campaigning with GOP candidates Jodi Rell and Rob Simmons today at the Groton sub base (the one that Holy Joe claims to have singlehandedly saved). Simmons, you’ll remember, is the GOP candidate running against Democrat Joe Courtney for one of those hotly contested Connecticut House seats. You know, the ones where the Democrat is supposed to be helped by Lieberman’s indy bid, right? At least according to the DCCC and the email that reader ems forwarded to us yesterday:
From: DCCC [mailto:dccc@DCCC.ORG]

Subject: RE: CommentsWe apologize for your frustration. It is actually very likely that this competitive race will actually help Congressional Democrats by making sure every Democrat is out at the polls. Rather than a bland race where Lieberman will surely win and no one will care, there is now a heated race that will bring every Democrat out to the polls, thus increasing the chances of a Democratic sweep of the Connecticut House seats.
If it’s in the bag like this, one has to wonder why Rahm Emmanuel will take to the state to campaign with Dianne Farrell today. Perhaps he too has heard that the foliage is lovely in Connecticut this time of year.
Or maybe the DCCC has come out of the ostrich tuck. I have no way of knowing what constellation of influence led them to a Come to Jesus moment, but ems has now forwarded this:
Mr xxx,
My name is Joseph from the Online department. I am one a several people that check the DCCC Inbox. I apologize for having sent this email. I had not realized that I had sent this email to you until I saw it on a blog this morning. I had written this draft intending to send it to our Online Editor, Jesse Lee, for approval and instead accidentally sent it to you. This is not the official policy of the DCCC and should not be taken as such. If you have any further questions email lee@dccc.org directly.
Thanks for your understanding and apologies for my mistake.Joseph
Right-o. I’ve only had two beers and I’ll lrespect you in the morning too, honey. Promise.
You can contact the DSCC and let Chuck Schumer know how happy you are about this turn of events here.

FITZ for good luck
so the DCCC is doing a little “walking on a razor’s edge” to drive turnout? riiiight…
time to saddle up the troops and let them know that CT is Ned or bust
NED for good government!
So why is it exactly that the DSCC thinks that J-Lie is going to caucus with the dems IF he gets elected?
Because he’s shown such loyalty to the dems in the past?
I don’t get it.
Why not – his winning could result in a cabinet appointment (thanks Karl for the heads up phone call) and thereafter Rell appointing a republican senator from CT, among the bluest of blue states.
What a way for the pubs to rub the dems’ noses in it. The dems need to slam him down hard.
Swan!
What? Short Low Ride is campaigning with Repubicans? Yeah, Jane. You did call that coattail. What a freakin’ idiot – Benedict Lieberman.
Rahm also said that since Whiney’s poll numbers have been going up, he thought if the election would have taken place just a couple of days later, Joe would have won. Honestly, I think the desperation is getting to them.
No one would have guessed that Been-a-dick Lieberman would don his Bush/Coulter Republican elephant suit so soon?
Surpirse, surprise, surprise.
OT.
More on Iran. The Jeruslam Post is running an “Israel may have to go it alone” against Iran story.
You will notice the “It is 1938 and the Iranians are Nazi’s” theme.

Any Dem who has not come out swinging against Joe at this point is a turncoat. He should be removed from the Democratic arty all together at this point and he should step down/be removed from Democratic appointed committees.
No mercy.

Meta — where was that?
Hmmm, perchance they’re finally cottoning onto RevDeb’s and windje’s points … or at least “Joseph & boss” are? Good plan on their parts. At last.
Damn those low-level staffers…
Professor Foland @ 9
I’ll second that!
Sooo, if the original e-mail was not official policy, and the second e-mail was to apologize for sending the first, where is the e-mail where the DCCC responds in accordance with their official policy? Or are they still trying to figure out what that policy is?
Why do I think they will figure it out on November 8th?
Is it possible that Reid will see that Joe should have his chairmanships taken away now?
Fer cryin’ out loud, what’s it take to get a stake driven through Lieberman’s black flabby heart, anyway?
Ah, American slang in unexpected places (see GSD’s linky):
Jane, he was on Charlie Rose a couple of nights ago, so no link.
RevDeb @ 4
They are either in serious denial or they just don’t give a damn. I don’t know which one is worse.
Howard Dean on Hardball:
I will not be supporting Joe Loserman (my word)in his Re-election campaign. Ned Lamont has my support.
Ned was the candidate selected in the primary because he has a great grasp on the issues. Joe, well Joe is out of touch with Connecticut and America.
On the flip side, Dean did say that Joe would be welcomed back into the Dem Party if he wins.
OK, now my head is exploding…..If Joe wins, it is very likely that a Dem Majority in one or both of the Houses would not be achieved. The Repugs in CT will be riding Joes coattails and the Repugs would retain control.
When will the Dem leadership cast this albatross off their ship?
JOE – IT is TIME FOR HIM TO GO
Jane, maybe it’s because I haven’t had my coffee this morning (which I’ll fix forthwith), but I don’t see a web link in your article for the fact that Lieberman is campaigning with 2 Republican candidates at Groton today.
Where did I miss it?
As mad and frustrated as I am about all this, the good thing is we can see who the cowards are, and who needs to purged.
prof 18 — there is no link. We’re reporting that.
meta 16 — thanks.
Jane, based on what? Conversation? Inside information? Source? Unnamed source? 2 sources?
Is “campaigning” your interpretation or snark?
Just wanting to be sure that such a potential bombshell is not a dud.
Shameless behavior. Like his actions in the August primary, this event is served up to Team Lamont on a tee. I hope they hit it hard.
Prof — it’s solid, and based on on-the-ground information. We don’t report rumors without clearly labelling them as such. That has always been our policy.
This election can be won by democrats if the entire democratic party can stand united behind lamont.
First thing they need to do is to expel Lieberman from Democratic party, take away his caucus membership and loudly attack him for his betrayal. Make him an outcast and not some “nice man” that they keep proclaiming him. Lieberman is not a nice person and needs the same kind of treatment. Lieberman’s recent statement that a win by Lamont will be a win for terrorists should have been challenged and he should have been made to apologise for this outrage. This issue should have been hammered every single hour.
Unfortunately This election will be lost by democrats because of their cowardice instead of issues.
Of course, there is this from last Monday:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/…..KM6HG1.DTL
Schumer and Reid should burn their bridges, on principle. They should announce something like, “Joe Lieberman is betraying the Democratic Party and has been for several years. In the current campaign, hardly a day has passed when he has not found a new way to make common cause with Republicans. The Republicans are treating him as their candidate. So must we. Senator Lieberman has amply demonstrated that he no longer wishes to be a member of the Democratic Party. We respect his decision, with regret, and are taking action to accommodate him. His seats on Senate committees will soon be occupied by loyal Democrats. We are throwing the full weight of the party, including the support of every single Democratic Senator, behind the campaign of Ned Lamont. More important, in the unlikely event that Mr. Lieberman wins in November, he will not be invited to caucus with the Democratic Party. He’s made his decision. We cannot trust his word and no longer intend to try.”
joe and company are also coming to Millstone Nuclear Power plant (where i work) today. i am convinced he has a deal with the repubs. either caucus with them or take SEC/DEF so Jodi Rell (repub) can replace joe with a thug. i will try to say hello but this is one highly scripted visit. i suspect my ned lamont sticker at my office will keep them away from me…
OT but it looks like that dutch “terrorism” scare is going to be a case of a US pilot piddling his pants over a bunch of brown skinned holidayers daring to speak their native tongue to one another.
What does the General call it “The Dark Stain of Courage?”
Of course, after your revelation, Holy Joe might just miss the train like Biden?
Or no chance of that?
Speaking of Joe: I thought this was worth bringing upstairs from the late night thread. CT-Sen: Tech vendors turn down Lieberman,
Milliner’, (this is gonna sound rill doofus, but) somewhere in my catch-up reading over the past few days, something you said really affected me and I gave you a shout-out nobody could hear. Now, of course, I can’t recall whether it was over your insight or funniness or something-it-turns-out-we-have-in-common-and-I’d-like-to-ask-you-about or just what.
Anyhow, whatever the hell it was — SALUD!
BTW the foliage sucks this time of year in CT.
I can’t wait till all of those long term Sens retire.
Golly gee, why won’t Schumer do the right thing?
hey Prof here is a link.

I live in Thomaston CT and our GOP town committee just endorsed Lieberman. Read it in the Waterbury paper.
I think the people in CT should have statewide Halloween contests mocking the little monster named Joe.
51 votes. If a Lieberman win assures them 51 seats Schumer, Reid, Clinton and Obama would all blow the S.O.B. on alternating days for a month after the election. Don’t believe any crap about Joe getting put on some sort of shit list or being booted from the party. 51 votes. That’s ALL that matters. Today’s Dems are a cesspool of cowardly invertebrates. LBJ would’ve taken Lieberman aside and informed him defying the party meant he was soon to be the most miserable bastard roaming the halls of Congress. He’d have to swim a stream of shit just to get to his desk. No chance for that type of enforcement with this crew.
LindyH, that Gilliard report is HI-larious! Gawd, those poor mopes.

Back when Jason Leopold kept
lyingclaiming he had five sources that Fitz had indicted Rove, FDL was deluged. Every other newbie commenter wanted to know why Jane and Christy would not publish what Leopold had already published inFakeOutTruthOut. Everyone was saying that Rove would get indicted, but no one would go as far as Leopold and say they had anonymous sources. Even MSNBC’s David Shuster said he thought Fitz would indict Rove.Jane and Christy never budged. As the epicenter of Plame news along with some other blogs, that took some serious guts.
I think people should start turning up at Lieberman events in redcoats for Turncoat Joe. Having spent time in New England during college, I’m fairly sure that everyone would get that symbolism right up front. As if the Bush smooch weren’t enough…blergh.

(M, ’twas prolly something like this that I was hallooing ‘n’ hohoing over before)
On the subject of errant e-mails, check out this story in the weekly Nashville Scene. Governor Bredesen, the Democrat running for re-election, returned from a vacation in the West and was hospitalized with some kind of illness. An official in the state Republican party composed an e-mail speculating (with an exclamation point) that it could be something as serious as Lyme Disease. This would incapacitate Bredesen during the Fall campaign, presumably helping the weak Republican candidate opposing Bredesen.
To top it off, the Republican mistakenly sent the e-mail to Bredesen’s press secretary. Now that would call for an exclamation point.
When the e-mail became public, and who could have imagined that happening with the governor’s press secretary being the recipient, the Republican claimed that he was only voicing his concern about the governor’s health.

Lamont trending up. J-Lie trending down. Two new polls now show them within 2 or 3 points, both within the margin of error.
J.Donne, the most recent I’ve seen was a Reuters report (linked somewhere mid- to late-last night’s Late Nite thread, I think) that has them essentially tied (Joe only 2 pts ahead now) in Rasmussen and another poll. This was fresh news yesterday.

Like one that handles VFF’s website.
The question out there is if ths people power thing continues and the power boys in DC are screaming into their own echo chamber.. can the dem party be reborn as a responsive and progressive one which listens to and speaks for the people?
Since retail politics is a pretty pricey biz unless the grass.netroots can continue to win against the deep pockets and the media insiders not much will change.
We are met on the battlefield of that great war for the character of the party. To win that battle the people really need to do more than post and work some shoe leather and get the message to the people and the people to the polls.
The Ned thing seems to be a vision of the future where the people get to decide who represents them. This is obviously not playing too well with the beltway blowhards. But one vistory in the battle is nothing to retire on. The primary win was a wake up call.
In NYS we have HillaryBot refusing to debate Tom Tasni… This is com pletely unacceptable. This is not democracy and this is not giving the people the chance to make their own choices.
We need to get money out of politics… Public financed and cost limited campaigns. Until this happens it will be an uphill fight unless progressive deep pockets candidate are willing to largely self fund these expensive campaigns.
We have already seen evidence that the net IS a very cost effective means of consciousness raising and can be the way to reach the people with the truth.
Imagine if the truth ruled the day? What would a reality based world look like…? You have to admit we are living in one largely of “manufactured” consent, mis and dis information.
The Lierberman thing is emblamatic of the entire problem in politics today… lies, power, money, influence peddling… ICK
Pachacutec @ 68

Pachacutec @ 64
Now there’s fetching.
Like the tech vendors who won’t work for Joe because they only work for Democrats, he’s likely having to use GOP pollsters for the same reason.
As for campaigning with Republicans, he’s obviously glomming onto Rell’s cross-party popularity and trying to be wherever he thinks the most media coverage will be. The question is whether it helps him or hurts him with the voters to be constantly at the side of Republicans. Where it should hurt him is with the Democratic leadership, but I don’t see that happening. Leaving the Senate race aside, the leadership should be having a hissy fit over the damage Joe is doing to the chances of CT taking three very viable House seats.
I think the attack – if the leadership can actually get it together before the election – should focus on Joe putting self ahead of party, his own misguided sense of ownership of the Senate seat ahead of working for a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress.
With respect to Dean’s comments last night on Hardball, I wasn’t thrilled about his “sure, we’d welcome him into the Democratic caucus” comment, but the rest of what he said was spot on. Some memorable sound bites: “Ned Lamont IS a Democrat.” “Ned Lamont is the future. Joe is a good guy, but he’s the past.”
Dean also really stuck it to George Allen. Said he’d worked with Allen when they were both governors, and in his opinion, Allen should not be in public service. Why? He shoots from the hip and caters to the worst instincts in people.
Oh, I also read in the Courant that Lieberman will be listed down several if not five positions down on the ballot. He may be hard to find.

Agreed–on principle, a good politician will wait until the last minute to take a stand, but no longer. It’s awfully late…
But even more than on principle, on practicality. A 51-49 Senate with Joe’s vote will (a) cost the caucus an arm and a leg and (b) last for only a few weeks until Rumsfeld resigns “to spend time with his family” (I can’t help but giggle typing that) and Hadassah suddenly gets offers to join corporate boards…

I guess this means Joe’s “impromptu” diner stops were not working out. I smell desperation.
The biggest surprise is really not that this is happening but that Joe is going to this so early in the Campaign. Not even waiting for Labor Day. You would think some ambiguity would be an important part of a staged campaign as an Independent. But I guess the CFL party is desperate enough to reveal now its candidate cavorting with the Repubs and with pundits like Glenn Beck. I suspect that this particular step was decided on about two days ago. I smell disorganization.
And here is why Plan B is being approved over-the-counter:
An approval would also open the way for von Eschenbach to be confirmed as permanent FDA commissioner. Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) put a hold on the nomination last year because of what they said was the agency’s refusal to make a decision about the drug. They accused the administration of politicizing science regarding Plan B by not accepting the recommendations of an expert advisory panel and the FDA’s own scientific staff.

Christy, if anyone needs patterns for the redcoats, I’ve used this one and it doesn’t completely suck. Not as easy to use as Simplicity/McCalls, but pretty darned good. (Note to anyone wanting to make one, the armhole is significantly smaller than we’re used to in modern clothing. It’s tight and it’s supposed to be tight.)
–I love this idea.
(obligatory disclaimer, I’m not associated with the pattern maker or the vendor, I’ve just used the pattern a few times for friends who have a more modern fashion sense than I do. (I’m pretty much stuck in the late 16th century, early 17th))

On a related note: when did Dems become blue? I swear that in the pre-internets era (meaning, I can’t go by anything but my rickety memory) Dems were red. Pardon my ignorance, but who exactly would be responsible for unseating Joe from his committee assignments?
I’m ready to start bombarding this person/these people with phone calls, emails and faxes.
compare and contrast:
“Today, Lieberman and Lamont will mark two different anniversaries.
Lieberman will appear with two prominent Republicans, Gov. M. Jodi Rell and U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd, to celebrate last year’s reversal of a Pentagon decision to close the Groton submarine base.
Lamont will be a featured speaker at an event in New York City sponsored by MoveOn.org to commemorate efforts to rescue victims of Hurricane Katrina and launch a new book about the effort. Lamont has criticized the Bush administration for its response to the disaster.”

Connecticut Young Democrats have a blog. http://blog.dems.info/
Last posting was July 21 (regarding Cong. Shays). That’s more than a month ago, by my calendar. Nothing since then.
Quite organized, them Young D’s.
I just left a comment about Ned Lamont.

So do I. Are there theater companies (or university theater departments) that might have red-coat costumes from Revolutionary War-era productions, and hence racks of red coats? What a beautiful sight to see a throng of red coats trailing Lieberman to his public events!

I too phoned the DSCC offices and got a somewhat disinterested person. They admitted to being aware of what Lieberman was doing today and when I asked how the DSCC could support such disloyalty, he merely said he’d pass my comments on to Sen. Schumer.
I also phoned Sen. Reid’s offices and spoke to a pleasant person. I asked if Sen. Reid was aware of what Joe was doing today. He said he was… I asked if Sen. Reid plans to remove Lieberman from his committee assignments, considering he is technically not running as a Democrat any longer and obviously has no loyalty to the Dem. party and the staffer said Sen. Reid was not commenting on that at this time but he would certainly pass my commments on.
I hope everyone can take a few moments today to phone both the DSCC and Sen. Reid’s offices. We need to let them know we’re out here watching.

GSD – Remembering Paul Wellstone is why Howard Dean really struck a cord in me I guess.
Paul was in the Senate at the time of the intial vote to support Bush in his quest to attack Iraq. Everyone, and I mean all the local papers, his fellow Senators, EVERYONE, was telling him to vote for the war, or be attacked as weak on defense and a loser in his upcoming run against Coleman.
He came home to MN the week before the debate and talked with people. And explained why it was such a troublesome vote in his mind. He surely did not believe that attacking Iraq was the next legical move after Afghanistan. But it was a very tough vote.
At the time his poll numbers in MN against Coleman were anemic. He had changed his mind on term limits and decided to run again in light of 9/11 and Bush getting elected in 2000. Coleman was beating him up about that and the poll numbers reflected that. He sincerely felt his voice was needed in D.C. Amend to that.
He went back to D.C. and voted against the Iraq resolution. He came home to Minnesota to a glorious reception for his courage, and his poll numbers immediately surged and he was running ahead of Coleman in the next 2 polls. He was well on his way to being relected.
And then the crash that took him, his wife and his daughter — all great political minds.
We are still grieving. And Coleman the fool is sitting in Paul’s seat.
meta @ 167

The fact that they aren’t responding with talking points suggests to me that they know that their talking points are worthless. I suspect, however, they are tracking all those comments, so it really helps when people call.

“Momma, Don’t Let Your Son Grow Up to be a Traitor”
(Joe = traitor trash)
On Hardball last nite, Matthews asked the political analyst (Charlie Cooke?) who would win in Ct. He opined that if you add the Repubs and Indies, that’s enough, so Lieberman has the best chance. He did not explain further. Chris did not ask about the latest ARG/Rasmussen poll showing a much closer race and/or dead heat than early poll, and neither man said anything about the Indies opposition to the war.
If you believe this CW, then it makes perfect sense for JL to make this appearance. What he’ll do is appear Republican to the Republicans, but then claim to the press (and his party) that this was an example of his bipartisan approach that wins jobs for folks in Ct, and since this is celebrating the jobs, and not “campaigning,” how could he not show up? Joe will continue to try to be all things to all people, because that’s how he thinks he’ll win.
I frankly find it hard to believe that JL can win on this combination, because the major move of Indies over the last few months was for many unaffilated to reregister as Dems, and they provided the margin of victory. We heard this anecdotally walking the neighborhoods.
With Joe appearing on CNN’s Beck show and agreeing with everything Beck said, and his comments on Imus, I expect that Indy trend to continue, because the anti-war/anti-Lieberman sentiment among Indies is still not fully reflectected by the CW, IMO. The Repubs are not moving much, although as Iraq collapses further, the might move more to Lamont — it seems unlikely Lamont will lose any of the support he already has from Repubs.
So the real difference in this campaign could turn on whether JL can keep the significant Dem support he still has. Here, Lamont has much to gain, Lieberman much to lose. Everything he does to endorse/support/sound like a Repub undercuts what I think is his only plausible winning strategy.
IMO, Lieberman’s endorsement of Glen Beck’s extreme neocon war with Iran statements should be broadcast and condemned as enabling the Bush crazies to lead us into another non-winnable war — and that will, by the way, further exacerbate the loss of security/credibility Israel suffered in Lebanon. I hope the Dems (not Lamont alone) play that card, and I don’t care one whit for threats to defrock Lieberman now, which I see as self-defeating.
bbuster @ 166
The traitor meme should be left to the wingers. Its a tactic that will come back to bite them in the end. Joe isn’t into republicanism as much as he has been seduced by power. He wants to be one of the powerful ones and his only route is through office.
Re: the idea that Joe could replace Rummy as SecDef. Why would Joe want to take guaranteed short gig while presiding over the collapse of the neocons dreams.
My dear Senator, Upchuck Shumer, and the other Israel first Democrats in Washington HAVE to disclaim and repudiate their pal Liebermole. That is a must. Not to do so paints them as traitors to the Democratic party along with him, IMHO. They all think they are not accountable for their filthy posturing and positioning, and their twisted loyalties.
Pach, Lotus. Thanks so much for your warmth and good wishes for my family. There is a lot of love there, and here.

I STRONGLY advise all FDL readers to call up the DSCC offices and demand that the DSCC publically denounce Lieberman and strip him of his comittee postings. You can not be a Democrat and actively campaign against Democrats in your state.
By crossing the line like this Joe is clearly saying he is not a Democrat. You can not campaign for Republicans and have any semblance of being a member of the Democratic party.
This morning Joe has made his choice, which apparently is self immolation. Joe Lieberman closet suicide bomber, who knew?

It seems the Democrats are too much concerned that Joe Lieberman’s potential vote in the Senate might be the difference between them being the majority party or not.
First there is the likelyness that Ned Lamont will winn in Connecticut, and that would make the Lieberman issue mute.
However, should Lieberman win in November, there still are the possibilities that the Democrats win a majority without Lieberman’s vote or Democrats being in the minority with Lieberman’s vote. In either case, Lieberman would be meaningless. So just playing the statistics game, Lieberman will either not be a part of the next Senate or his vote might not mean much.
I wonder if there are people in the Democratic party who assess those risks. The smart money is no longer on Lieberman.
Now there’s a scary thought for the average politician. Someone like Allen has spent millions of dollars to hone his message, shoot his TV ads and craft his sound bites. And then, because he came up with a remark about a member of his opponent’s staff that appeared to be racist, all that is out the window.
Please pass me the Kleenex, pun.
Glorfindel @ 188: UPCHUCK Schumer! How fitting.
Like others above, I like Christy’s red coat idea, though figuring exactly how to orchestrate such a campaign could be tricky. There are several historic “museum towns” around New England where actors re-enact revolutionary battles, which could possibly serve as a source for red coats. It still sounds kinda hard to pull off effectively though. Plus, it’s still too warm around here to be wearing a coat during the day!
Maybe it’s time for another straightforward papier mache float: Turncoat Joe’s Gotta Go. Lieberman himself wearing the red coat. Or something like that…?
[ As an aside, I just caught up on all the threads after a few days away and am quite relieved at the positive turn FDL has taken. I was starting to nurse a foul feeling in my stomach that FDL was approaching some dark destuctive precipice, which I thought would be a shame given the good work during the Lamont primary. Seems like this morning’s thread is evidence that the discussion about civility and criticial dialogue has done wonders. Thanks, Christy.]

BOFFO, CLARE AT 200. Yeppers!
Hey all,
I just called both the DSCC and the DCCC to complain about Lieberman (Con-Lie-CT) and his plans to campaign with Courtney’s opponent today. I stated that I was a life-long Dem and a PCO, and that I was disgusted with Lieberman for stabbing us in the back, and that now he was manifestly working to oppose Democratic takeover of the House with his actions today.
I emphasized that Reid and Schummer and Emmanuel needed to vocally and publically repudiate Lieberman, and that the leadership of the DSCC (eg Pryor) had to get on board with Lamont.
I received a very polite and attentive response from the staffer at DSCC, however, the person at DCCC clearly couldn’t wait to get me off the phone and hung up on me mid-sentence.
That didn’t take long. His slow-motion implosion isn’t going nearly as slowly as I was expecting. Only 6% of likely voters say they’re going to vote for the Republican candidate. Is he trying to pull in those folks? This stunt is going to cost him far more Democratic votes than he gains.
Since Joe refused to recognize the results of the primary, I wonder if he’ll recognize the results of the November election, when Ned spanks him again. I imagine Joe will have to be dragged out of his office by Capitol police, thrashing and shrieking like William H. Macy at the end of “Fargo.”
I will look forward to watching that on Youtube.
For those constituents of Carl Levin who would like to see him support his own party’s Senators, he is already in MI for this week’s convention, so you’ll want to call the Detroit office. 313-226-6020.
I suggested to the nice man who answered the phone that it might be nice to have a statement before the Convention on Saturday, so we don’t have to keep asking him to his face.
You might want to ask him what he thinks about funds that could have gone into Debbie Stabenow’s war chest going to support a guy who is working to get Republicans elected.

I’m absolutely convinced that Bush & Co. have pictures of leading Dems in flagrante delicto with goats, chickens, and various other barnyard animals. I just emailed the DSCC:
Your website claims to be “committed to electing a Democratic Senate”,
yet the DSCC has not yet endorsed Ned Lamont for Senator. This in spite
of the fact that Mr. Lamont has been endorsed by many if not most of
the Democratic leadership.
By contrast, “independent” Joe Lieberman has been endorsed by many in
the Republican leadership INCLUDING the White House. These are the
people that the DSCC is committed to defeating.
The last straw has come today, when Joe Lieberman has shown his true
roots by campaigning with GOP candidates Jodi Rell and Rob Simmons at
the Groton sub base. While this is within his rights as an independent
candidate, THERE IS NOW ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR THE DSCC TO SUPPORT
HIS CANDIDACY, OR TO CONSIDER HIM ANYTHING OTHER THAN A DE-FACTO
REPUBLICAN.
I demand that the DSCC publically denounce Lieberman and strip him of
his comittee postings IMMEDIATELY.
Thank you,

CT is full of moderate Republicans who are appalled by Bush, Rove, Cheney et al, and what is happening to the US. I think there is a lot of moderate Repub & Independent support for Lamont – they despise Lieberman.
The real issue for me is – how the Dem party is going to handle this. They can’t wiggle out of this one.
We are seeing all the components of the losing, tired strategy they have used for the past 20 years play out here. The rock has been lifted and there is no where to hide.
Call Harry Reid’s office at 202-224-3542 and ask them what they think of Lieberman’s campaigning for Republican Congressional candidates in Connecticut.

What’s going on with Lieberman has left me saddened and shaken, wondering what’s the point of supporting such people.
If it weren’t for the hideousness of Republican governance, I would seriously consider leaving the party. I’ve never seen such public contempt for their own constituency as is being evinced by the DSCC and the DCCC.
I’m the one who’s posts Jane is posting. I spent some time today writing to Schumer directly while I was on his website. The form requires that you select a topic heading.
*There is NO heading for “Elections” or Primaries or even Candidates. IOW, there is no way to properly subject your letter. Not so inadvertently, that means when they cull the results, no where will they be able to ennumerate all those who have written in about Lieberman.
Something needs to be done.
Here’s the scoop::
No mention of DEMOCRATIC SENATOR Chris Dodd or any of the Democrats in Connecticut’s Congresssional delegation, so they must not have been invited when Lieberman, Rell and Simmons planned this shindig.
By the way, if the Groton base is allegedly in dire danger of being closed — the supposed reason for this photo-op of Joe’s — then how come the Navy just started building a $600 million housing complex there last year?
As far as I can see it, this story thus far is lacking sufficiant evidence. I am a strong Lamont supporter but it kinda seems like someone’s jumped the gun here. Beating up Reid over a huge unconfirmed claim ain’t cool either.
A top diary at Kos is reporting:
“private meeting over how to keep a sub base open has suddenly turned into a campaign rally where Lieberman is promoting the election of republican candidates?
Since when has a policy meeting where (for the love of god!) people from the opposing political party attended been considered a campaign rally for that opposing party?”
Were we mislead and worked up over a false claim? If so, FDL owes us an apology. Being a true progressive to me is winning by telling and exposing the truth. Exaggerations and lies for “the means justifies the end” logic is for repubs.
This should prove to all Democrats that Lieberman is a lap-dog REPUBLICAN.
After reading this I wrote to one of my Senators, Barbara Boxer and asked her to
support Ned Lamont and the Democratic party. In addition, I asked her to follow-up with Harry Reid and strip joe of his leadership positions and stand with the Democratic party.
I asked her why she would stand with someone who voted for Judge Alito; why Chertoff still has a job when he was Brownie’s boss and Joe sure as heck hasn’t held the Bush administration accountable for the lack of security in the U.S.; why she would stand with someone who was with W on social security; I told her that the Democratic voters in Connecticut voted for Ned Lamont. I believe at one time Joe was a good man and still is but my support is with Ned Lamont and the Democratic Party and asked Barbara to hold the Bush adminstration accountable and hold Joe Lieberman accountable for his inept and very weak role in the Senate.
Next time check the facts. This kind of thing won’t do Lamont any good.
Onset of Alzheimer’s, perhaps…?
This was kind a relief for me to hear though. I was sore afraid Lamont was going to have to run against a sane Joe Lieberman. But Lieberman can’t win without a sizable chunk of the Democratic vote. There just aren’t enough Republicans in CT to make up the difference if the Dem vote goes over overwhelmingly for Lamont. And I seriously doubt this kind of behavior is going to further endear Mr. Lieberman to Democrats in any way.
Oh wait. I get it. Thanks PhoenixLady, for posting the AP clip. That clears things up considerably.
FYI, Groton was on the chopping block in the Base Realignment and Closure thing last year or the year before. Keeping it open was pretty huge for CT’s economy and a major accomplishment on the part of their entire congressional delegation (Dem’s and Repub’s). So if they’re breaking ground for new housing down there now, I guess they’ve got a right to crow about it a little.
Leftofliberal, I emailed the DCC and got a polite stiff-arm saying that the DCC is only concerned about House races. I then reiterated (as I noted in my first message) that his Senate bid is hurting Dem House races.
I also noted it was worrisome I had to point this out to them, and that I had hoped that were smarter than that.
Guess not.

What gave LBJ power was the seniority system. There weren’t all those sub-committees for every day of the week so every Senator can preside over something. In the old days the leadership had the kind of power that only the Republicans now wield and nobody crossed the party line or they’d get a call from Sam Rayburn or LBJ.
The democratic caucus today is like a band of headless chickens running in every direction. None of them can ever resist the urge to put both feet firmly in their mouths, usually on national TV.
It’s just sad how spinelessly useless they all are. As Teddy Roosevelt said “You can’t carve a man with backbone out of a banana.”
OK, it’s now the day after yesterday. What are the CT newspapers saying about yesterday’s Groton event? Did it in any way resemble the “campaigning with Republicans” description?
I suspect it comes down, Clinton-like, to what the meaning of “with” is. Here in New York, if you’re running for office, you attend the Salute to Israel parade or risk being smeared as a latent or blatant anti-Semite. And if politicians of the other party do the same, you could technically be considered as campaigning “with” them, but let’s get real.
I suspect it’s the same deal with the Groton event. The Groton base is as sacred a local cow in CT as Israel is in NYC. Did Lieberman appear “with” Republicans in the Salute to Israel sense or, as Jane insinuated, in the lending-support sense?
If she made too much of this, she could acknowledge such openly and move on. Holy Joe is sufficiently odious without any added hype.
Per the above comment, reviewing the media reports it is somewhere in the middle. Thes was a staged PR event and this time of year to call such a thing a campaign event is legitimate. I’ve only seen mention of Lieberman but none of the other Democrats who were involved in this last year being present. There are Republicans quoted saying favorable things about Lieberman.
There is some ambiguity, but there is enough there to call this “campaigning with Republicans.” It adds to what we already knew–that Lieberman is the Republican-preferred candidate in this race.
Beyond that, this is far from the strongest case against Lieberman. It’s not enough, by itself, to use to call for things like removal of Lieberman’s seniority. There’s enough ambiguity in this being a state event to give Lieberman cover.
It’s not that terribly significant a thing, but I did wind up in a debate over this after I linked to this at my blog, Liberal Values. The discussion is at:

Thing is, they were breaking ground on the $600 million housing project BEFORE the pro-forma insertion of Groton onto the BRAC list. The fact that Groton got a near-unamious thumbs up WRT BRAC shows that it was not in danger then and it’s not in danger now.
As he mentioned in somebody’s pro-Joe diary over at DKos, Pachacutec’s been talking to various DC pols and insiders about this and they’re all in shock that Holy Joe’s using the pretext of “saving” a non-endangered sub base to justify doing a photo-op campaign appearance with two GOP Congressional candidates eager to distance themselves from Bush, and who are looking to Holy Joe to give them the fake “feint to the center”.
